Owner and Head Chef at Bistro Michel

ocated in the quaint Blubird Shopping Centre, just off Corlett Drive in Birnam, you’d be forgiven for not knowing Bistro Michel was there. However, the locals certainly know all about this classic French bistro, complete with a French owner and chef, Michel Morand. Bistro Michel opened its doors at its current premises in January 2015 and boasts some of the best views in Johannesburg. The bistro is typically French – the benches and wooden tables, chalkboard menus and décor would make you think that you had stepped straight into the French countryside. Michel was taught to cook by his grandmother. His love for classic sauces and the simple, yet tasty French cuisine was instilled in him back then, so it’s not surprising that Michel chose to make his career in the kitchen – preparing dishes that his grandmother used to make when he was young. Nothing tastes better than a home cooked meal that’s prepared with love! After completing his schooling, Michel headed to culinary school in Lyon and the rest, as they say, is culinary history. French cooking, although simple and not expensive by any stretch of the imagination, is defined by its sauces. Michel is passionate about his sauces prepared, of course, in the classic French style.

One of the most interesting things about Bistro Michel is its staff. Almost all staff members have been with Michel since the days of his first restaurants – Gatrile’s and Auberge Michel – and they have had the privilege to serve the ‘who’s who’ of South Africa. This includes former president Nelson Mandela as well as international guests including Bill Clinton, Sepp Blatter, John Legend, Lionel Ritchie and numerous captains of world industry. Of course, we wanted to know what is his favourite dish on the menu is. Although he admits he loves both the steak tartare and onion soup, he added that this changes daily, depending on what fresh ingredients are available to make the specials board. One of the things that’s unique about Bistro Michel is that although the menu is static, they will make about five to 10 portions of a certain dish and pop it up on the blackboard. Once it’s sold out, it’s wiped off and Michel moves on to creating the next masterpiece of a dish. At Bistro Michel, bread has never tasted so good and the foie gras… well, it will just melt in your mouth. Michel’s burgers are also pretty legendary, might we add. You will want to come hungry, that’s for sure! Before embarking upon his travels, he doesn’t enquire about what he can see, but rather what he can eat. Whether it’s a cheeseburger at Balthazar, fish sandwich at Gordon Ramsay’s Burgr in Vegas or foie gras scrambled eggs at Au Cheval; it’s these trips, filled with food research that fuel his imagination and passion for his palatable projects, such as The Big Mouth - a charcoal grill and sushi bar, named after the big mouth bass. For Nick, restaurants are all about atmosphere, and he believes that they are equally about the experience as the food. The Big Mouth serves as an everyday eatery and destination dining, with staff that are passionate and hungry to learn. Nick has taught them everything he knows, as he believes that teamwork is the key to success. For him, food is like poetry and is a collaborative effort from start to finish, which is made possible by the camaraderie he encourages in his kitchens.

He would love to have a meal prepared for him by Thomas Keller, American Chef and Restaurateur, whose landmark Napa Valley restaurant, The French Laundry, has won multiple awards. We’ve found some goodies from three fantastic wine farms… 30% of the grapes are whole bunch pressed and the component fermented naturally in French oak casks. 50% of the grapes are destemmed, crushed, pressed and inoculated to ferment in French oak barrels. The remaining 20 % of the wine fermented and matured in stainless steel tank. After maturing for nine month, these components are blended together to create the Neil Ellis Elgin Chardonnay 2015. Packed with stone fruits with citrus like acidity and good phenolic tension, it’s a superb vino. Around R115 a bottle. Light golden green in colour with youthful lime and melon aromatics, and gorgeous ripe citrus notes, the Neil Ellis Whitehall Chardonnay 2015 is always a winner. HOW SUPERMOM STAYS FIT When she’s not chasing after kids…

ake up, shower, get the kids dressed, make breakfast, pack lunches, find the missing shoe, manoeuvre through taxis and try beat the school bell. All this before 9am? You should have a cape- because those are superpowers!

A mums schedule can be overwhelming, and may also be the reason many women struggle with their weight. We’ve created three resistance exercises and a routine that will work out your entire body with practically no equipment.

• Curl in your toes and lift your knees off the floor, straightening your body. This is your starting position.

Squats

• Finally, push on your hands to lift your chest and hips back into the starting position.

When done properly, squats alleviate pressure from the knees by strengthening the surrounding muscles, without any unnecessary impact on the joint. • Place your feet hip-width apart. • Bring your arms forward, hinge at the waist and sit back as if reaching for a chair that someone is pulling away. Your knees shouldn’t move forward, but stay behind your toes while you go as deep as possible, until the top of your legs are parallel to the floor. • Return to the standing position by pushing on your heels and lifting your chest. Push-ups • Start on your hands and knees.

Tricep Dips As the name implies, this exercise focuses on the triceps - an area of concern for many women. • First, sit on the floor and place your hands on the floor behind your hips, directly below your shoulders. • Bend your knees, place your feet under the knees and lift your hips off the floor - this is your starting position.

Set 1 10 slow, deep squats Jog in place for 2 minutes 10 push-ups Jog in place for 2 minutes 10 tricep dips Rest for 1 minute Set 2 15 squats Jog in place for 90 seconds 15 push-ups Jog in place for 90 seconds 15 tricep dips Rest for 1 minute

• Extend your arms and push on your heels to return to the starting position.

Set 3 20 squats Jog in place for 1 minute 20 push-ups Jog in place for 1 minute 20 tricep dips. Finish by performing long, static stretches for at least 3 to 5 minutes.

You can work these three exercises into a simple 30 to 45 minute routine. First, warm up your muscles with approximately 10 to 15 minutes of light jogging in place, followed by leg swings and arm circles.

Now that you’ve completed the above in a matter of minutes, get those leotards and head off to save the world!

GROWING ENTREPRENEURS with Operation Hunger

hat does a vegetable garden grow? In Umqanduli, a village outside Umtata, three new gardens grow cabbage, spinach, beetroot, onions, green peppers and turnips. THEY ALSO GROW ENTREPRENEURS. Operation Hunger helped widows from the village set up the gardens. Then, thanks to funding and training from people like you, they became entrepreneurs. They learnt to sell their vegetables to the village and start a business. Which, in turn, provided income to buy school uniforms for their children and profits to buy a deep freezer. Which, in turn, allowed them to buy more products – like meat and cool drinks – to sell to the community.

Now, two years later, they have even established a small grocery shop. So, you could say the Umqanduli gardens are steadily growing vegetables, entrepreneurs and an entire community. Not to mention a sense of hope in a previously impoverished area of South Africa.

Operation Hunger has provided positive action in the fight against malnutrition in South Africa for 35 years. Our methods empower individuals, households and their communities. In Umqanduli the foundations are now set for future income-generating projects as well as other projects such as the local feeding scheme. But, as ever, we need your help. Sophiatown, the iconic musical is now on at The Market Theatre until 14 May. We visited the Turbine Hotel and Spa and to be frank, we didn’t want to leave. It’s in an optimum location, and the hotel is a heritage site, which existed as a power station in 1939 and 1940. The remodelling of this majestic creation took three years, arduous years and the labour of almost 350 people. The Turbine exudes an energy that is addictive. In every nook and cranny you’ll find character, personality and charisma. The hotel has colourful funky décor and old school charm. They’ve managed to secure the history of the power station while reshaping it to fit into modern times. The space is contemporary, with excellent views of the water’s edge and restored industrial interiors. We stayed in the Yacht Room, and while the hotel is boutique and has 24 rooms, each room is individually decorated and styled in tribute to Knysna’s rich heritage. We loved each twinkle of this hotel, especially the hospitable, great hearted staff.

I wake up at 5.30, meditate for 15 min and make hot water with lemon and ginger. Then I make breakfast, take my daughter to school, then go to yoga before painting until 5pm or searching for inspirational material for a new project. Then I play with my daughter - who asks me to call her Panda by the way. We watch the sunset, make a healthy dinner and make plans for tomorrow.

I want to meet so many! Currently, I am obsessing over Hera’s work from HeraKut. The way she shapes her characters moves the whole world!

What does being a mother mean to you? Learning patience, non-attachment and unconditional love. Any special Mother’s day plans? Every day is Mother’s day. I stay away from most of the holidays and try not to take any moment for granted.
