ark Twain said a lot of things on a variety of topics. One such example being “clothes maketh the man”. Hmmm maybe, but that is something we can debate another time. But for this month, here’s looking at all the mothers out there who really worked hard to make us the people that we are today. The true works of our community. And to make sure our readers remain in the good graces not only of their own mothers, but of their MILs too (aka mother in laws), we have some must use pointers on how to celebrate the woman who worked hard to raise your better half. May is also the month to celebrate workers after all and we think raising humans is one of the toughest jobs around. So Don’t Forget Mom-In-Law this Mother’s Day on page 6. It’s not hard to spoil mom after everything she does for you. And if you follow our lead, we have the perfect day mapped out for you both to enjoy on page 28. Kick off with some breakfast at one of this month’s Hotspots – Brik Café in Rosebank or, if mom’s in the mood for something sweet, maybe a little local ice-cream. Although May is typically the start of winter, Mzansi never fails to surprise us with that warm winter sun. Check out this month’s winefeature which is perfect for Rose All Day on pages 32 and 33, in the sun and a good catch up with mum about everything going on in both of your lives. Whether mom’s a ballet fan or not, treat her to an extravagant performance with all the frills. We’ve taken the liberty of Busting Ballet Myths on page 42, for you in the event she needs some convincing, but in all likelihood this will be an easy sell. P.S. Snow White the ballet is coming up soon and is really not to be missed. DON’T FORGET MOM-IN-LAW
this Mother’s Day
Cheers to the woman who worked hard to raise your better half
6
We thank our own moms all the time for everything they do for us, so we felt it fitting to salute the mom-in-laws a.k.a. MILs as well this month. Think how hard they’ve worked (mostly) to get your other half to the respectable and marriageable state in which you found them. So, here’s how to make your MIL your number-one fan this Mother’s Day.
and chocolates say you ran into Woolies and grabbed something off of the promotions table. Ask your spouse what their mom might really like and score double points! A nice gift for MIL and brownie points from your partner for showing interest.
Even the playing field It’s the same argument every year, a massive brunch with your mom and a quick tea in the arvie with his? How did you think this was going to end? Of course, the mom that gets the chop-chop visit later in the day is going to feel like chopped liver, but who knew that meal times were a sign of hierarchy?
Be social media-savvy If you plan on posting a picture collage and a sentimental message for your mom on Mother’s Day, prep one for MIL as well. It’s a quick and easy thing to do and will make her feel special amongst all her family and friends. PS: use flattering pictures.
This is an easy fix. Celebrate the moms together. Show your MIL that she is just as important as your own mamma with a combined brunch, lunch, tea or dinner. Whatever it is, everyone wins. Both moms feel special and you kill two ducks with one cake, so the rest of the day is free to do as you please.
Take it to the next level Right, if you really want to shine with MIL (you have your reasons we’re sure), set a date just for the two of you. Maybe a brunch and a massage or a movie if that’s her thing. Proactively showing interest in spending one-on-one time with your mother-in-law is the ultimate indicator that your care, appreciate and respect her. It also lets your spouse off the hook for the day which means he/she owes you one and who doesn’t like to have an IOU in the wings for a rainy day.

Gift smart You know your mom well and you know what she likes, so it’s usually quite easy to get her a gift. It may not be as easy when it comes to the MIL. If you find yourself in said situation, don’t be generic if you can help it. Flowers
Get the kids on board Your MIL dotes on her grandchildren and wants the same love and attention in return. Brief and prep your children in advance. Let’s put Fort Night away, write gran a heartfelt letter and give her loads of hugs and kisses on Mother’s Day. Any bratty behaviour on their end will be your fault – naturally! So, get the kids on board – even if it means a small incentive on your part.

THE MELROSE GALLERY PRESENTS A SOLO EXHIBITION BY CHRISTIAAN DIEDERICKS In Search of a New King will be held between 9 May and 9th June. Diedericks, one of South Africa’s most widely exhibited fine artists and print makers, both locally and internationally, is known for capturing beauty in poignant, thought-provoking, and often painful themes. Always pushing boundaries politically, socially and religiously, as well as personally, he is as unafraid of laying down his own truth of the world and In Search of a New King is one of his most personal and indeed, important exhibitions to date. The aim of the exhibition is to spark debate, rather than provide answers, debate about possible ways forward, without adding to anyone’s past plights and to ultimately learn from each other’s’ cultures. This 41-piece plus strong exhibition has enough shock value to ensure radical awareness and more than enough beauty to awe even the most hardened art critic. EMIRATES CELEBRATES THE SPIRIT OF AFRICA WITH LATEST BRAND CAMPAIGN
Jesslynn has always considered herself a bit of a skincare guru with a passion for discovery. As a teenager, she struggled with her skin and constantly found herself looking for the next miracle product. She was obsessed with beauty blogs and read countless skincare product reviews.Today, Jesslynn is the owner and founder of Lulu and Marula, a natural skincare range that is focused on plant-based ingredients, sustainability and the importance of supporting local. K www.luluandmarula.co.za Q @luluandmarula D @LuluAndMarula E @luluandmarula Tell us a little bit more about Lulu and Marula and its inception. It all started five years ago when I had the need to seek alternative natural products for my skin. There were not many local brands available and overseas products were expensive, so I started making a few of my own and found that they really worked for my skin. After selling to close family and friends and receiving positive feedback I started an online store and the business has grown so organically from there. What sets Lulu and Marula apart from its competitors? Our approach. Our aim is to provide products that are luxurious, fun, fresh and beautiful. We are inclusive and provide a brand that speaks to women and men of all walks of life and ethnicities. Marula oil is at the heart of the brand; we are passionate about its amazing benefits. Everything is handmade in small batches so we have complete control of the manufacturing process and quality of the products. Why did you decide to start your own business? I didn’t initially set out to start my own business but received a lot of encouragement from family and friends. From there, it’s just continued to grow steadily and become a thriving business. Your favourite thing about being an entrepreneur? The satisfaction of being able to create a product that people use and love. Just being able to make a difference to my customer’s skin is very rewarding. It’s tough being an entrepreneur so these moments really do have a powerful impact in day-to-day life. Which aspect of the range resonates most with your personality? I would say the entire brand encompasses my personality. It is fun and playful but at the same time refined and functional. The tribe has spoken The reality show you should be watching Maybe if local politics had more of a reality TV spin, viewership would be slightly higher. Unlucky for the likes of President Cyril Ramaphosa though, he isn’t choosing a wife and winning over local audiences like Lee Thompson in the first ever South African version of The Bachelor. But is there a chance he’s going to get a rose at this year’s election? Time will tell.
P
olitical fervour, electioneering and service delivery strikes come to an all-time high as the country prepares for the general election. It’s an exciting time. Zapiro cartoons go viral in WhatsApp group chats and every pole in the country is dotted red, blue, green and/or orange (Patricia De Lille’s new GOOD party is orange in case you’re wondering about the new hue). With each election comes a growing concern over whether people will come to the polls. Things are looking good this year with a healthy 48 political parties contesting the national elections and with 26.74 million or 74.4% of the voting population having registered to vote. But despite that good news, 9.8 million eligible voters have not registered to vote, with a significant 62% of these under the age of 30 years, according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). Here’s how you can play your part in a bid to get this year’s election trending and ensure many more seasons to come:
10
Be informed People don’t engage in topics and issues that don’t interest them or in which they are not invested. If you don’t know who the political players are and what they are promising, the elections will likely come and go like the FA Cup. Taking stock of the different party manifestos and keeping up to date with the news cycle engenders interest and stake in it all. Are Data prices Hello Joburg • May 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za
cover feature a burning issue for you? Read more on how the ANC plans to drive data prices down. If Eskom keeping the lights has you up at night, then maybe Patricia De Lille’s new party’s promise to look into renewable energy, especially wind and solar power, might be something you want to get behind at the polls.
Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied
Learn from recent scenarios If the shock election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum vote are anything to go by, then rest assured that the notion or belief that the “rest of the voting population” will ensure order prevails is a load of sh*t! Voters stayed away in their numbers, only to regret it later and take to the streets in protest. In both cases, who knows what could have happened had the younger voters come to the party on election day. Be the difference Yes, we know the story about the guy throwing starfish back into the sea and the “but can it scale” debate. But in a country where GenZ is becoming influences in their own right based on the shoes they wear and the music they listen to, then surely you realise the difference you can make. Whether you influence your family, a small group of friends or your entire university faculty, now is the time to lead by example. Clichéd we know - but true. Try it. It’s not over till it’s over Yes, the political climate in South Africa is volatile at the moment and as South Africans, we are tired of empty promises; we want action. Is everything going to be different on May 9th? Not straight away. But this is when we get to have our say. We cannot predict exactly how this will go but as South Africans, we need to vote. We need to vote for the party that we believe will bring change and create equality of opportunity. We cannot do this if you stay at home. It’s time for the tribe to speak. shopping items we will either never wear, don’t fit well or require a very specific occasion and this is where the capsule collection comes in. All you need to do is make sure to invest in a few versatile, high-quality items instead.
Embrace workwear minimalism and dress like a boss Having a stylish and suitable wardrobe for work is so important because let’s face it, there are about 260 work days in the year.
W Words Danita Pilley Image Supplied.
e’re talking about dressing for the job you want and not the job you have. Dressing like a boss and making a good impression all year round, and what better way to do that then with the foolproof and ever so practical capsule wardrobe.
Creating an appropriate and well-edited office wardrobe is a bit different than a casual weekend one and there are a few additional things you should consider like your office dress code, practicality, everyday tasks and the message you want to portray. Start by building the base of your wardrobe with pieces that transcend trends. Focus on staples that fit properly and are made with good quality materials. Items to start with are a pair of tailored trousers, classic fit jeans, a neutral blouse or shirt, t-shirts for layering, a blazer, suit, trench coat, and smart shoes. After that, you’ll need to add a few seasonal pieces depending on the time of year like knitwear. When adding new items to your collection make sure they work with what you already have. Deciding on a simple colour palette will help with this. Keep it minimal, classic and don’t be afraid to show a bit of personality with a couple key accessories.
Haven’t heard of this concept yet? You’ll definitely want to take notes! A capsule wardrobe or capsule collection is basically just a trendy-cool name for a small collection of clothes that can be mixed and matched, are centred around a purpose and can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Conceptualised by Caroline Rector on her blog www.un-fancy.com this process of compiling a closet is not only meant to completely de-stress the whole idea of getting dressed in the morning but also be a practical way to save money and look put together all at the same time. Fast fashion has enabled most of us to stuff our closet to the brim with

Considering dehydration, temperature changes, improper sleep routines and possibly a poor diet are all parts of long-distance air travel, it is no wonder that it impacts your skin.

eauty sleep is not so far-fetched if you think of it. Hopping on and off planes and sleeping in a different bed every night interferes with your beauty routines and the state of your skin – that’s a fact. According to blogger Siobhan Yeatman from Supgarspiceblog2, there are three must-haves that need to be in your travel bag: A great cleanser, a deep moisturiser and baby wipes. She advises to keep it simple, but also to use good quality products that won’t let you down. Nikel’s Cleansing Milk with Immortelle is one of her favourites, as it is nourishing and very gentle on the skin – the ideal product to counter the dehydrating artificial climate of an aeroplane. She’s also a big fan of Nikel’s all-natural Nikelhidris Face Cream, a luxurious moisturiser which she says is light enough to use both day and night. “I just love the beautiful scent from the orange oil,” she says. Siobhan also explains that except for the fact that baby wipes are gentle on the skin, there are many uses for them when travelling. Beauty and travel influencer, Nasiphi Ngcwabe claims to never travel without Nikel’s Nikelbalm for her lips. Give your skin some extra TLC the night before you leave on your trip. Gently exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells, which will allow your skin to get the most out of your moisturiser. Then

use a replenishing mask for deep moisturising and nourishing. While travelling, be sure to take steps in combatting dehydration, your skin’s biggest enemy. For a refreshing, great-smelling boost of moisture, Nasiphi suggests Nikel’s Alpine Rose Tonic. Alternatively, keep Nikel’s travel-sized Evening Primrose Oil at hand. Mirjana Brlečić, founder of Nikel Cosmetics, says she often adds a few drops of Evening Primrose Oil to her moisturiser, which has proven to fight off dryness, inflammation and stress. Of course, drinking plenty of water while travelling is of the utmost importance in order to keep yourself and your skin healthy and hydrated. Siobhan also adds Here are a that travelling is not couple of similar necessarily the ideal time to try out new products you can products. She suggests try at home before that you stick with your next trip: what you know and what works for your skin and we definitely agree! 1 www.nikelcosmetics.co.za

t’s no surprise that one of the best skin treatments in the city comes from Dermalogica, the high-end skincare system researched and developed by The International Dermal Institute. Pop into the brand’s new concept store in Sandton City for a personalised ProSkin60® Treatment using their super-luxe line. Before your facial starts, you’ll slurp a shot of water to boost skin elasticity from the inside out. Then, you’ll meet with a skincare specialist to chat about your skin goals and choose the best type of products for your complexion. The 60-minute treatment is customised to target all of your skin needs, including cleansing your pores, smoothing out fine lines and brightening your complexion. Although it’s done in a secluded and relaxing environment, the results are nothing short of dramatic every time thanks to techniques and technology to improve texture and tone and highly advanced professionalgrade actives for deep treatment. This is by far our favourite facial when we want a comprehensive experience to address all our skin concerns and achieve healthy skin! Plus, you get a tension-busting head or hand massage during your treatment while you’re tucked under a luxuriously soft faux fur blanket and the products are working their magic. Does it get any more relaxing than that? We think not. Dermalogica has also just launched the Pro Power Peel® that targets the signs of acne, hyperpigmentation and premature ageing. MICROBLADING 101 Everything you need to know with Stylash
Microblading. We’ve all heard the term before. This semi-permanent eyebrow trend has quite literally taken the beauty world by storm but, do you really know what the process entails? We headed to Stylash in Bryanston to get the lowdown from senior artist Kylie Serebro.
W
Words Danita Pilley Image Supplied.
hat does it feel like? Does it work? Is it worth it? If you haven’t been sucked into a black hole of YouTube videos about the procedure just yet and you really are clueless about this revolutionary secret that your fave celebs and influencers have been keeping, then we are here, together with Stylash, to give you the 441 on everything you need to know. What is microblading? Basically, microblading is the secret to achieving picture perfect eyebrows that look totally natural. It’s the perfect hassle-free alternative to spending hours pencilling in your brows every morning only to get the shape wrong. Stylash’s motto is "wake up with makeup" and according to Kylie, this semi-permanent procedure creates effortless balance and symmetry and is all about sculpting the best shape for your face. The process is pretty simple but very precise thanks to a tool that’s sort of shaped like a pen with an angled blade made up of little needles at the end. These needles don’t quite penetrate the skin like a traditional tattoo would but rather delicately scratch the surface creating tiny incisions. These feather-light strokes are then filled with medical-grade pigment to create fine and realistic hair strokes on the epidermis layer of the skin. According to Kylie, it is really important to realise that what you see on Instagram might not be what is possible for your own unique brows. “More often than not, I have found that it's best to strive for a more natural look, your brows are not twins, they are sisters and what looks good on someone else just might not suit you,” she says.
The procedure First things first. Kylie starts by numbing the brow area with a topical ointment. This usually takes about 20 minutes. While the numbing cream works it’s magic Kylie will discuss the desired brow shape and look to go for to create the perfect dimensions for your face. Then she microneedles the area and applies a numbing agent to ensure that the area stays numb throughout the procedure. After that, she measures the area around the brows and draws in a guideline taking face shape, symmetry and facial features into account. Then the process begins by gently implanting the pigment into each superficial delicate stroke. If there is any discomfort at this point, Kylie will add another quick layer of numbing cream. This process is repeated a couple times until a final layer of pigment is applied to the brows for a few minutes. She then cleans the area and et voilá – beautiful brows! After the procedure Many people don’t realise this but microblading is a two-step process with six weeks healing time in-between. During these first six weeks, you will need to follow your aftercare instructions and avoid any picking or scratching. Your eyebrows will start to heal and scab much like a tattoo. In the first ten days after the procedure, your brows will change colour, become flaky and look like they’ve faded but remember to stay calm during this time. Your new brows will take the full six weeks to truly reveal their final look. And, remember any imperfections can be topped up at your second session. #HELLORECOMMENDS Literally a mouthful at Just Teddy
There were some big words (like patisserie and boulangerie), big influencers, big orders and big happenings at Hyde Park Corner last month at the opening of Just Teddy.
T
he family-run patisserie and boulangerie opened doors at Hyde Park Corner last month and people were queuing for their pastries and coffee. Mandla, the barista, had his hands full with guests ordering coffees and cappuccinos from their tables and over the counter, while the Just Teddy family were strategically positioned either in the kitchen, behind the patisserie counter or on the floor. Who knew that so many people would be curiously queuing for the latest in high tea treats?
Just Teddy has the potential to become your next favourite high tea spot as they have partnered with The Tea Chest - the sole supplier of TWG Tea in South Africa. They supplied Just Teddy’s creamers and the beautiful crockery displayed in golden framed windows all along the shop’s walls. When tea is served with an accompanying threeminute hourglass, you know it’s a whole new level of tea-drinking. Just Teddy has a way of making a simple morning of tea and cake feel like you’ve been drinking tea with the queen. It’s a special place that is definitely worth a visit.

chef OF THE MONTH
First inspired by his father, Medeo Restaurant’s Executive Sous Chef now spends his days cooking up signature dishes like triple-cream Mediterranean burrata and veal tortellini doused in sage and butter sauce at this stylish Italianesque dining spot.
Is there a chef who you admire the most? It’s impossible to choose just one. I admire how English celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Marcus Wareing treat each and every ingredient that ends up in their kitchens with the utmost respect, and how they never fail to turn any ingredient into a world-class dish made with love and passion. What’s your favourite kitchen gadget? A Thermomixer can turn even the simplest recipe into a fine-dining dish. Other kitchen staples of mine include a sous vide machine, which ensures that food is cooked to perfection at the right

temperature, a juice dehydrator and, of course, quality pots and pans. What’s an example of your ideal autumn menu? It would hands-down include my signature dish, which is a warm and comforting plate of braised quail complemented by squash puree, cranberry gel, sprouts and fondant quail jus. Or, I would do a wine pairing with a beautifully seared salmon fillet and a chenin blanc as a palate cleanser. I also love cooking all types of Italian and Asian dishes because they allow you to be inventive and to play with lots of different flavours. Tell me about pairing food and wine. One of the key factors in food and wine pairing is matching the flavour intensity and weight of the dish to that of the wine. For example, intensely flavoured, heavy dishes like game or roasted meat will overpower a light-bodied wine like Italian pinot grigio. Food and wine pairings are the most familiar forms of food and drink pairing; however, more foodies are seeking out nontraditional pairings that capitalise on a unique sensory experience – think gin, brandy and cocktail pairings.

Are there any local flavours/ingredients in the dishes on your menu? I’ve always believed that the SA team has been excellent at flavour profiling and bringing big flavours into dishes. Two good examples are the salmon trout starter and lamb main course, in

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Sebokeng near the Vaal. After completing a Hotel & Catering Management Diploma at Boston College, I was given training at the exceptional inland resort, Riviera on Vaal. It was here that I fell in love with the kitchen and was taught all the basics of cooking under chef Warren Frantz. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to work in every section of the kitchen, which led me to realise that I can be an all-rounder chef.

osebank’s 1935 fire station is still a well-oiled machine and with the recent development and its new neighbour, Brik Café, the firemen should be well nourished and well-oiled too!
The vintage gone modern building needed only one final touch – a fitting food spot. Brik Café could not be more suitable – from its name and interior to its community sense. Brik Café combines old and new with a very modest feel that links in well with its surroundings. With the fire station serving the local community, it’s only natural that they also wanted to give back. They make use of numerous local suppliers for their ingredients and local crafts can be bought from the café in order to further empower the community. Owner, Sasha, explains that with heritage in mind, they wanted to go back to how food was meant to be prepared and from that, a very nourishing, preservative-free menu came about. They serve the most delicious vegan Linguini as well as gluten and refined sugar-free banana bread with homemade butter and ricotta and spinach gnudi. They also have chickpea pancakes and Truthery cold press juices. Before you leave make sure take a look at what they have in The Glass Cabinet; you can choose from all kinds of treats to take home with you. The café’s crockery was specially handmade by Duma, a pottery lecturer from Pretoria, who refers to himself as an earth bender. Did you know? The name Brik originated from the red brick that was initially the inspiration for the café’s interior which was meant to fit in with the neighbouring fire station’s heritage. Brik is, interestingly enough, also a middle-Eastern pastry made from flour and oil - order the pastry from Brik Café’s dinner menu.

ocated at The MARC in Sandton, Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream lures everyone and anyone in to have a taste.
Women in corporate attire carefully consider their options in front of the glass cabinet. The options are endless with flavours like Hot Cross Bun (the flavour of the month) and Birthday Cake (the best seller which was unfortunately sold out – just our luck!). They also have flavours like Madagascan vanilla and honeycomb, rocky road, butter cake and vegan toasted coconut. The quirky shop is not very big and most people come to get a quick ice cream fix while on the move. You can choose a bucket or an ice cream cone – the latter being the better and more authentic ice cream experience. Still, the buckets are probably more practical for indulging on the go. The Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream kitchen also isn’t limited to only these two serving options and various novelty items are assigned to different stores regularly and are always interchanging. Keep your eye out for the Phic Stix, sundaes, waffles and sandwiches. According to Diddie, who assisted us in scooping up the best Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream experience, your ice cream is not complete without some toppings. It is also here where the decision making might get the best of you. Choose between sugar-coated peanuts, marshmallow bits, mini meringues, small turkish delight cubes and more. Open since September last year, Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream at The MARC forms part of a niche market in Sandton and according to us, they are definitely the flavour of the month. There’s no sin in having ice cream if it’s from Paul’s. 129 Rivonia Road, Sandown, Sandton m 076 319 6124 Q www.paulshomemade.com

Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review… SWALLOWS INN
V
ery few restaurants in the world – let alone Joburg – can boast about being around for almost 70 years. I’ve travelled all over the world and am a great lover of Chinese food, so I recently decided to visit Joburg’s oldest Chinese restaurant, Swallows Inn, to see if their food has stood the test of time. The first thing you should know about Swallows Inn is that it’s deep in Ferreirasdorp in Joburg CBD in the old China Town district, so Uber is your best bet to get there. The second thing you should know is that while the exterior of this hole-in-the-wall joint looks downtrodden and neglected, you should not let this deter you. When you get inside, try and get a table upstairs, as the downstairs area is rather claustrophobic. The interior of the restaurant is very dated too, but bear in mind that this super-old spot hasn’t been refurbished for a reason – the old-school traditional ‘décor’ and borderline tacky plastic tablecloths will remind you of downtown Jozi in the 60s and 70s. It might even make you feel like you’ve just entered a 1920s opium den, to be completely honest. The one-page menu is divided into prawns, pork, kingklip, chicken, beef, duck, vegetarian and extras, and offers everything from chow mein and chop suey to foo yong and sweet and sour dishes. My dinner companion and I started with shrimp chips and vegetable spring rolls with some coconut milk to drink (the restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol) followed by prawn chow mein and oyster sauce chicken to share. While our lovely Chinese waitress couldn’t speak much English, the service ran like clockwork and before we knew it, we were tucking into our mains. The portions were huge and the quality of everything was out of this world. I’ll be honest – I was a bit sceptical about ordering a seafood dish at what looks like such a run-down place, but the prawns were fresh, juicy and downright delicious. The meal was so moreish that we also decided to order the bok choy and garlic, which was a delight. We ended the meal with bowties that were fried to perfection with a lightly doughy inside and a generous glaze of melted sugar syrup. We were surprised to see that the restaurant has card facilities when paying the bill. On our way out we noticed that the main entrance is locked in the evening, so if you go for dinner, you might need to ring the doorbell or knock on the door. We left feeling satisfied and absolutely stunned about our new foodie discovery. Swallows Inn gets full marks from me for both authentic Chinese food and an ambience to match!

BULL RUN
ROSÉ ALL DAY For the good times, and the not so great times
There are two types of people: those who want to have a glass of wine to unwind after a really bad day at the office and those who want to drink to forget. This
one’s for those who want to do a little of both.
Graça Casa De Ouro Rosé Look and sound familiar? Of course it does. It’s the wine your folks drank at Ocean Basket or Parea when they dined out during the week and only let you have one fizzy drink while they klapped the bottle. It’s probably the wine you bought for those first house parties you crashed in your student days at varsity – because it cost R30 back then. Now going for around R45, you can get this wine at pretty much any supermarket in Joburg – try your nearest PnP if you’re feeling desperate or Makro if you need to buy in bulk. This beaut can combat any day because it’s sweet but not too sweet, goes straight to your head and tastes like berries. With flashes of salmon pink, a touch of raspberry on the nose and nectarine flavours, it’s fresh and light and all things nice. We like to eat it with comfort food after a long day. French fries, a cheesy pizza or seafood pasta are all great options. FYI: This wine comes bottled in both 750ml (if it’s been a really bad day) and 375ml (the bambino for an average day).

Asara Pinotage Rosé
There are so many reasons to love rosé wine: it’s budget-friendly, it tastes good in your food, it pairs well with everything and you can literally drink it right this second (no need to hold this wine for a few years or ‘cellar’ it!). The Asara Pinotage Rosé has tasting notes of ripe, vibrant strawberries and red berries, with candyfloss and melon on the nose. The best brunch news yet is that this particular rosé is possibly the best wine to drink with eggs – one of the few styles that shines. It’s not just perfect for summer or brunch though – with the structure of white wine and some of the aromatics of red, it’s incredibly versatile and also goes down well with a comforting pizza after a long, stressful day at work. R96 from www.bottleshop.co.za
Words Carly Ritz, Candice May, Danita Pilley Images Supplied.
Graham Beck Brut Rosé Nothing beats the feeling of getting home after a long day of hard work, changing into sweatpants and pouring yourself a glass of sparkling wine. This is a go-to wine choice for anyone seeking a little pick-me-up in the form of a lip-smacking, blush-hued, effervescent refreshment. Rosé generally offers cheerful flavours, reminiscent of tart berries, watermelon, stone fruit and citrus, that can combat any foul mood and leave you feeling more relaxed and less stressed with each sip. And Graham Beck Brut Rosé does just that. Not a classic rosé but offering that attractive pale pink hue (with a silver tint) this MCC is appealing to look at and even better to drink. This brut rosé offers a richly textured taste sensation with intriguing layers of freshly crushed berries and hints of oyster shell. Flirtatious and fun, yet elegant and structured with spicy, mineral-scented aromas on the nose. After a long stressful day, we suggest ditching dinner and the stress of cooking altogether and pairing a glass of Graham Beck Brut Rosé with a generously sized slice of your favourite chocolate cake because nothing beats MCC and chocolate. If this doesn’t have you feeling better, we don’t know what will. R149 from www.bottleshop.co.za

MEXICAN RESTAURANTS
DINING IN Top three hacks for the perfect work lunch
We all try to pack lunch for work as often as possible, but despite our best efforts, end up falling into the habit of buying takeaways or ready meals regardless of our dwindling bank accounts.
T
ruth be told, we’re all only human and going through the effort of thinking and planning creative and exciting ideas for lunch and then still having to make them at 07h00 during an already rushed morning isn’t ideal. So, in an effort to break these bad habits, we’ve put together a simple list of rules to follow to ensure you have a kick-ass work lunch every day that will surely make your colleagues jealous. Be cost-effective Sure, you can scourer the internet for some of the most extravagant recipes that require hundreds of ingredients and intricate cooking methods but, realistically, how long will you keep it up? The first step in maintaining a good work lunch routine is cutting costs because there’s no better motivation than seeing the amount of money you can save from ditching your daily trip to Kauai. Try buying ingredients like brown rice, quinoa, fresh veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds in bulk. If you already have these ingredients at home, you’ll be more inclined to use them and you’ll save a bunch of cash. Keep it simple No one wants to spend an hour the night before or in the morning preparing a gourmet meal. That’s a habit just asking to be broken, so keep it simple. Keep it (somewhat) exciting Every lunch doesn’t have to be a five-star affair and every mouthful doesn’t need to be the most mind-blowing sensory experience either but it’s important to pack a lunch that you look forward to eating. Switch up ingredients, play with textures and make sure you’re not packing the same thing every single day.

Hit up a local farmers’ market It doesn’t get much better than swooning over bushels of freshly cut autumn flowers and baskets of locally grown organic apples while sipping a dirty chai latte in the crisp early morning air. There are farmers’ markets all over town, and autumn is one of the best times to check them out. The Melville Food and Farmers’ Market, which takes places at Bamboo Centre, is a firm favourite. Here, you’ll find heirloom seeds, plants and more unusual fruits and vegetables at The Kitchen Gardener, any herb you can think of at Rosemary plus all sorts of raw and natural ingredients, cultured dairy products, bone stock, banting baked goods straight from heaven and much more. It’s open on the first Saturday of each month from early morning to after midday. E @melvillemarket
Pick your own fruits and veggies Make a plan to pick your own produce this season! Here in Joburg, we’re just a quick trip away from farms that have pick-your-
own autumn fruits and vegetables, including apples, avocados, figs, aubergines, carrots and cucumbers. The closest options are Camdeboo Farm, which is only five minutes away from Fourways Mall, and GOD se Plot in Olifantsfontein, where you’ll find the juiciest figs. If you don’t mind a drive, pack a picnic and head to Ganico Organic Farm in Muldersdrift – the most beautiful pomegranate farm run by a proud and passionate family. E @camdeboofarm E @godseplot K www.ganico.co Savour a pumpkin-flavoured treat Pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks are so last season, but don’t worry – our local dining out spots consistently kill it in the autumn flavour department. Grab a classic American-style pumpkin pie with homemade vanilla bean ice cream or whipped cream from Dukes Burgers, vegan spicy pumpkin ice cream with caramelised pecan nuts and naartjie from Lucky Bean or a pumpkin pie and coconut ‘milkshake’ with cinnamon, maple syrup, coconut milk and nut brittle from Westcliff Deli at Four Seasons Hotel Johannesburg.
Would you prefer a savoury pumpkin indulgence? Try the pumpkin pancakes with burnt-sage butter and farm ricotta from Il Contadino. 1 wwww.dukesburgers.co.za 1 www.luckybeanrestaurant.co.za 1 www.fourseasons.com E @ilcontadinojhb
Go vintage shopping for cosy sweaters Nothing says ‘autumn’ like adding luscious layers of wool, knits, flannel and leather to your wardrobe, and vintage clothing is the best kind of autumn clothing. Start your seasonal shopping spree at VintiQueen in Maboneng, where you’ll find blouses in vibrant prints and tweed jackets. Next, head to Melville to pop tags at Reminiscene (the OG of Jozi vintage stores) and The Stuff We Love, which stocks an assortment of unique buys from all over the world. Finally, stop by Patou Boutique in Craighall to splurge on some second-hand high-end designer shoes and handbags. MAKE ART, MAKE OUT Floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the street, a marble bar counter that takes centre stage and a mezzanine level to give patrons a view of the space makes The Artivist one of the trendiest new spots in town. It’s a celebration of art of all kinds, with chic grey walls that offset the art, soothing music that creates a unified bar atmosphere and the lingering aroma of ‘Afronomadic’ food. Even better yet, downstairs you’ll find Untitled Basement, a hidden gem that hosts musical events like We’ve Got The Jazz and What’s Wrong with Grooving.
VODKA IS VEGAN We doubt vodka is the answer, but it’s worth a shot at Lenin’s Vodka Bar on Maverick Corner. A stylish vodka bar with communistinspired décor and sporting Russian symbolism with a large mural of Lenin on the wall, here you can choose from vodkas from 12 countries plus a basic menu of salads, flatbreads and burgers to nibble on. There are other varieties on offer too, with cocktails divided into different categories, namely The Russians, The Americans, Martinis, The Wild Bunch as well as Shots and Shooters.
FOR FOX SAKE Fun fact about The Little Fox? The centuryold warehouse that it’s housed inside in the quirky 1 Fox precinct lays claim to running the first telephone line in South Africa from the main gold mine and the Department of Mines in the 1890s. Headed by star mixologist Gareth Wainwright in partnership with Ginologist craft distillery, the menu at this ontrend cocktail bar also showcases other craft spirits like rum and mezcal – and the witty bartenders are always up for conjuring new creations on demand.
What to order: The Coffee + Tonic cocktail – a heady combination of Bombay Sapphire, craft cold brew coffee and elderflower tonic. If you’re hungry, try the free-range burger served on a black bun (the colour is infused from coal) or any of the Nigerian plant-based dishes.
What to order: Anything Russian will seem fitting. The Siberian, shaken with vodka, banana liqueur, Cape Velvet, Kahlua, fresh bananas and half-and-half is delicious and perfectly blended and goes down a treat with some sweet potato fries on the side.
What to order: The Buster Knutts – an interesting concoction of Ginologist Citrus Gin, butternut consommé, lemon oleo, Cointreau, Savvy B, fluffy stuff and grapefruit sherbet. Is there a better way to eat your veggies? We think not!

HAIG CLUB
CLUBMAN Haig Club Clubman invites you to make your own rules!
The rules of whiskey have been engrained in us all: a 'man’s drink' that is enjoyed neat or only with a splash of water and never mixed! It’s safe to say that times have changed, and Haig Club Clubman encourages you to make your own rules instead. From the striking blue square bottle to the incredible drinking options that can be created with this versatile liquid, Haig offers both those new to whiskey and aficionados a unique take on Scotch. It is not only delicious served neat or sipped over ice – it works perfectly at the heart of a cocktail. This Scotch pairs well with a wide variety of mixers to complement its ultra-smooth character and its vanilla, toffee, coconut and butterscotch notes. We headed over to Diageo HQ where brand ambassador Reggie, The Happiness Agent, created some amazing cocktails. Reginald Mthembu (28) is an alcohol, fine beverages, spirits and etiquette expert. When it comes to whiskey his motto is: “whiskey is like cologne or perfume, at first it’s overwhelming but if you give it time it makes sense”. The Haig Club Orange and Tonic Otherwise known as H.O.T., this is a refreshing whiskey mixer with tonic and a slice of orange that's the perfect serve. Prepared in under a minute, it’s a very easy-to-mix delicious cocktail. The sweet notes of Haig Club combine perfectly with the bitterness of the tonic and the fruity orange notes round off the drink in a delightful way. This cocktail is definitely a crowd pleaser.

Born out of the Italian Renaissance somewhere in the 15th century, ballet is a highly technical form of dance that most people associate with boring classical music and tutus. But it’s way more. Snow White -The Ballet returns to Montecasino this month and here’s why we think you should see it.
42
For the gees Gees? At the ballet? Hell yeah! Gees is certainly not reserved for rugby fields and over-crowded bars on the weekend. There is a unique energy and vibe about the ballet that you need to experience for yourself. You can feel an excitement in the air as people get all dressed up and step out for an afternoon or evening that is completely different from their day to day routine. There’s a buzz in the foyer as people arrive in their best, order a drink and wait for that call to take their seats. You have to feel it to believe it.
It’s a spectacle Say what you want about the ballet, but it really is a celebration of the human form. It’s quite something to see trained, disciplined and brilliant ballet dancers glide and twirl on the stage in unison in magnificent costumes to a sound-track of emotive music underneath dramatic lighting. The power of any tightly choreographed performance (#flash-mob) is mesmerising and hypnotic, to say the least, no matter who you are or where you are from.
A little escapism Rough day? When the curtain rises, you are instantly taken to another word. The theatre is full, the lights dim, and hundreds of eyes look up to a stage set to transport the audience away from the present moment and into the world of the dancers –at least for an hour or two. Dance is a universal language, no matter where it’s performed or who watches it - movement can speak to audiences in a way that all understand. It is a language that will survive as long as the body communicates it.

Of the people you will see… We do some of our best “people watching” on occasions like this. Never mind airports, believe us when we tell you that the ballet is a rabbit hole when it comes to dissecting a crowd. Women and men in tights seem to rope in an eccentric and diverse audience. Today’s ballet goers could be old or young, academic or creative – and you’re pretty sure to spot a fascinator or two. If you are the curious type, you’ll be making up stories about all the people for hours.

CELEBRATE ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES at the Mall of Africa
or the past three years, The Mall of Africa has risen like a beacon on the Highveld landscape – seen for miles from vantage points around Johannesburg, Midrand and Centurion. As the largest single-phase shopping mall built in Africa, it is fast becoming the centre of not only shopping excellence but has led the way in being South Africa’s premier ‘retail-tainment’ centre.
This month the Mall of Africa is proud to once again host the annual National Antiques & Decorative Arts Faire (NAADA Faire) for the third year in a row. The event will run from 23 – 26 May in the Crystal Court and promises to be a must attend event for serious antique lovers, decorators and people who simply love and appreciate treasures of the past. The Antiques & Decor Fair is the place to find that statement piece that will be the talking point of your home, perhaps an impressive side-board or an antique piano to fill that space in your lounge. Add to your collection of silver, find a unique porcelain dinner or tea set, pick up a unique piece of jewellery or simply find something special that catches your eye. There will also be an impressive selection of retro clothing, funky costume jewellery and 70’s furniture, advertising billboards and Art Deco pieces.

Words by Frank-Lee in the front row
onrad Koch’s Puppet Guy is back from down under for the SA leg of his show that runs until 27 May. If the Australian and Canadian reviews are anything to go by, it should be a great run. HJ took our seats for his debut performance at The Pieter Toerien Theatre last month – here’s the lowdown! Conrad Koch is a brilliant performer and comedian. His jokes are hilarious, well timed and crude (albeit a couple of his political quips are a little outdated) and he interacts with his puppets seamlessly – so much so that they almost feel like an extension of him. You can’t help but fall in love with the likes of Chester Missing, the ostrich and the mosquito. We did find it a little strange though that Chester is suddenly a lighter shade of pale in this new show – did we miss something? And while we love Chester, the ostrich and the mosquito really do deserve a little more air-time! Made from an old sock and some feather dusters, Conrad’s ostrich character reveals the comedian to be a little more resourceful than we thought. Audience engagement in this show was epic with Conrad using Snapchat to turn an audience member into a puppet and using masks to turn others into animal characters. Of course, a good-natured crowd is essential for all this to work – and a grumpy bunch of show-goers could throw him for a loop #risky but we like it. The puppets definitely seem to have a better rapport with the crowd – most likely an intentional strategy that speaks directly to what Ventriloquism is all about – the art of making an inanimate object seem to come alive holistically. For that Conrad gets 10 out 10.

LEVEL UP AT OFFICE CHITCHAT Be that go-to co-worker for pretty much everything
Working in a big corporate environment or even a smaller boutique business filled with successful and seemingly smart people can be a bit overwhelming – especially around the water cooler. But did you know you can use your downtime to level up? This month we’ve found some interesting and different forms of fun to entertain you, but also add to your confidence and knowledge bank. You’ll rock it regardless of whether you’re in the open plan or at dinner with new clients. Must watch: Kandy Kane on YouTube Once Kerry has made you feel confident in your body, why not pop over to Kandy Kane’s YouTube channel for some makeup inspiration? The South African makeup artist has a host of videos where she tests out the latest cosmetics and makeup offerings as well as some easy to follow tutorials to help you funk up your work look. Her channel is neatly broken up into tutorials, budget shopping suggestions and a few funny vlogs thrown in for good measure.
This is such a useful book to have on your bedside table. Written by Russ Swan, the book explains the science behind pretty much everything. From relatively simple topics like understanding why your work colleague’s wi-fi is faster than yours to more complex discussions like how the weather in space works and why. Each explanation is paired with fun illustrations and takes just a few minutes to read through. You’ll be clued up no matter the situation.

Must visit: kandidlykerry.co.za Feeling comfortable in your own skin is the first step to walking into the boardroom and nailing that big pitch. But sometimes it’s difficult to not poke the flabby bits or feel disheartened when you scroll through Instagram posts of women who seemingly have their stuff together. That’s why Kandidly Kerry is the perfect site to visit once a week. The South African body positive blogger posts regular content that helps you dress for the body you have and love it regardless. Her content is fun, positive and will remind you that you’re just as kick-ass as any of those ladies on Instagram. Hello Joburg • May 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za
Must try: Detective Pikachu
Ever toddled outside the office for some fresh air only to see groups of your work colleagues together in a circle furiously staring (and tapping!) at their phones? You might have been confused in the past but now you can join in the fun. They’re playing Pokemon Go. A game that took over the world a few years ago. To really understand the game, you need to understand the Pokemon fascination - and with the new Detective Pikachu movie dropping on May 9th you’ll be introduced to the wonderfully fun world of Pokemon. Voiced by none other than Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, the movie follows Pokemon Pikachu as he tries to help a young man understand his father’s disappearance. The movie will introduce you to a bunch of famous Pokemon and by the end of it, you’ll want to download the mobile game and get in on the action!

ON OUR RADAR Cassim’s Kitchen
Kyle Cassim, is making waves in the South African music industry. Since starting his career in 2012, Kyle has performed at Ultra Music Festival and in Ibiza, London, Amsterdam, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
How did you come up with the concept? A while ago, I invited some friends over to my apartment and we decided to set up a CDJ in the kitchen and have ourselves a little party, later that night everyone got hungry and so I decided to start cooking. While my friend was busy DJ’ing in my kitchen, and I was feeding my guests I looked up and realised that this setting would make for a great reality show. As a result Cassim’s Kitchen was born and it has been such a success since we started. What’s sets the show apart from anything else on offer at the moment? Cassim’s Kitchen is more than just a vlog/reality show, it’s creating a unique experience for social media viewers and my followers.

Q @kylecassim D @kylecassim E @ThePowerOf5FM Hello Joburg • May 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za
What’s your favourite thing about Cassim’s Kitchen? My favourite part of Cassim’s Kitchen is learning something new, I once learnt how to make sushi, and an hour later had to make it for my guests. I also just love watching everyone enjoy the experience both at the event and through social media as well as watching my guests reaction to the meal I have just created.
Have you always had a passion for cooking? I come from a family of feeders. From the time I was born my mom and gran always made sure they fed me the most exquisite and delicious foods. Food is what brings my family together. What inspires you most in the kitchen? People. I love cooking and entertaining. How in your opinion are music and food the perfect combination? The key to any good party is having good people, good music and good food. What’s your favourite dish to make and why? Thanks to my gran, I love making a good curry, it is also my favourite food. Adding all the spices and watching it simmer and change with all the different smells is an art on its own. What can your fans expect from you this year? A lot more energy! Between The Kyle Cassim Show, Cassim’s Kitchen and my Alias CINIMIN (an EDM DJ duo I have with my brother), I will be putting more energy into everything I am apart of to provide my listeners and viewers with the best entertainment I can. Catch Season three of Cassim’s Kitchen on the last Wednesday of every month 19h00 live on the 5fm facebook page! WIN WIN WIN!! Where to stay Hotels are most often regarded as temporary tourist lodging in cities that aren’t their own, but then there’s Cape Town – a cornucopia of hip and legendary hotels that offer so much more than beds and minibars. We recommend the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott Cape Town, which is a destination in and of itself. The ‘designer luxury’ hotel is a firm favourite among the fashion and film industries, so it’s no surprise the venue’s stylishly sexy vibe infiltrates its onpremise nightlife.

So dig out your stilettos and head to the urban-chic restaurant and bar area, which offers cool communal and Instagrammable vibes plus an impressive list of innovative handcrafted cocktails and boozy milkshakes with a lively crowd and breath-taking views of surrounding mountains. Every Friday and Saturday from 17h00 till late, the entire downstairs communal area – we’re talking the massive community table and swanky cocktail bar floor space that will make you want to dance and snap selfies – becomes a space where you can chill and meet new people. quail or asparagus. Dishes like scallop with pomegranate and fried onion, Peking duck breast with salted sour plum and walnut salsa, and lavender peaches with macadamia nut ice cream will leave an impression you won’t soon forget, and despite exquisite plating and novel presentation, nothing is overworked or overcomplicated. Where to wine and dine Tucked away in an exclusive residential part of Stellenbosch, Makaron Restaurant is the show pony of the venerable Majeka House & Spa. The quirky oasis created by interior expert Etienne Hanekom is a designer’s paradise that melds disparate décor ideas seamlessly – it’s a beautiful setting in which to enjoy inspired food while learning a bit about South Africa’s star ingredients. Here, chef Lucas Carstens aces exquisite ‘dust-to-delicious’ combinations like mock abalone mushroom and tjokka, baby marrow and kapokbos, and Karoo lamb and groenboontjiebredie. We recommend ordering six or seven small plates and trying a little bit of everything on the menu. Don’t be concerned about leaving hungry – while the plates are small, the portions are indeed more generous than most other tapas-style dining spots and each morsel is packed with flavour. What’s more, not being located on a wine farm means the restaurant isn’t limited when it comes to wines they can serve, so you can look forward to superb food and wine pairings. Chef Guido’s tapas draw on frequent globe-trotting, a passion for authentic Italian ingredients and the ease that comes from chefs cooking the sort of food they love to eat. STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD
How to use social media to get the most out of conversation and connections
Words Candice May Images Supplied
A
ttending conferences can be a big expense for your business, and it’s not easy to build meaningful relationships and get a return on investment that goes beyond learning for all this. Organisers may try to ease awkward introductions with networking events, and the majority of conference-goers may be interested in networking, but that still doesn’t make it simple. That’s where the value of social media kicks in. Social media tools empower you to accelerate networking, make higher-quality connections and feel less awkward in the process. Here’s how to use them to cut through the noise (or silence) to make the most of your conferences.
traction that the conference is gaining among influencers. By using Twitter alone, you can also ‘meet’ many people before a conference.
touch (on social media, of course) long after the event, which in turn nurtures more meaningful deals, partnerships and even friendships.
Eavesdrop on digital conversations We’re all guilty of studying a conference agenda and selecting sessions that pique our interest ahead of time. But, sometimes, a panel we’re looking forward to will kick off and we’ll quickly realise that the topic or viewpoint is actually pretty dull. By logging onto social media, you can eavesdrop on digital conversations happening elsewhere and vote on your feet. Who knows, you might discover an energetic exchange that’s relevant to your business.
Join the pre-party! If you think that the online conversation only starts when the first session does, think again – it actually starts well before a conference convenes. The first step is to check if the event you’re attending has a Twitter hashtag (#), LinkedIn group or other interactive discussion and join it. Follow the conversation beforehand to find out which topics are hot, set up preconference meetings and judge the overall
Nurture more meaningful deals Social media is a fantastic tool for researching the backgrounds and interests of contacts you feel will be most valuable when you meet. When you schedule time to grab a coffee or talk between sessions, your conversation will be more productive and meaningful because you’ll already have an idea of your common interests and experiences. Try to connect with as many people as possible – it will be easy to stay in
Have follow-up ‘coffee’ It’s super-simple to maintain new connections virtually (without filling up your already busy calendar, that is) with the likes of Facebook and Twitter. Even though it eliminates real-world contact, it allows you to stay up to date with what’s going on with the people in your network and stay on top of trends you’re following. Using social media before, during and after conferences is like taking notes, with the advantage of having dozens (or even hundreds) of others also taking notes and sharing them with you. Hot tip! Don’t be afraid to spark discussions and connections not only with fellow attendees but with speakers too. Agree or disagree, chime in with your point of view and have a robust discussion! he complex will be perched on top of a two-storey parking podium overlooking the city’s lush canopy ‒ providing an idyllic, leafy setting whilst remaining a mere 10-minute walk from public transport and the vibrancy of Rosebank. Comprising 131 upmarket one-, two- and three-bedroom units as well as penthouse suites, the apartments will be positioned around a central landscaped garden including a clubhouse and lap pool. Referencing the world’s largest urban forest, the facade of the building was inspired by light observed through trees, and the manner in which it is filtered in between branches and tree trunks. This also influenced the introduction of warm white walls enriched with dark accents and subtle textures, from stone cladding to metal screens.

WEBAFRICA CEO
TIM WYATT-GUNNING
Tell us more about Webafrica and your involvement as CEO. When I took over Webafrica in 2011 it was already 12 years old. The truth is it was a great company operating in a really boring space because in those days the internet wasn’t as essential to everyone’s lives as it is today. In 2019 the internet is an essential utility alongside water and electricity. It’s immensely exciting for us to be one of the biggest ISP’s providing super-fast fibre and LTE internet access to the whole country. What sets Webafrica apart from its competition? Our culture is all about being human in a very techie world. We realise our customers don’t want to understand the complexities behind their internet connection, they just want us to sort it out and make it work. Our big rule is that “We don’t speak Geek’. So it’s OK if you’re 70 and need an extra 10 minutes on the phone for us to help you get your problem fixed. What does Webafrica value most as a brand? Individuality. We hire individuals, not CV’s. We believe that our customers will only be "wowed" by their interactions with us if we provide memorable service, and to be memorable you need to be different. Which is why we use our curious looking chubby bloke with crazy hair in all our advertising!

When it comes to the company, what are you most proud of ? I don’t think ‘proud’ is the right word because we still have lots to do before we can sit back and contemplate our success. I think we’ve done a pretty good job in simplifying the internet for our tens of thousands of customers who don’t want to understand the complexities of it! Hello Joburg • May 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za
What should customers know when choosing an internet provider? They should choose an ISP which offers great service and great prices. There are over 100 ISP’s in South Africa, most of which we have never heard of …. Which isn’t to say they’re not good at what they do but it’s quite a cut-throat industry and size does matter! A good simplistic way to check out if you’re making a good choice is to check the ISP’s website: If the website looks outdated, the ISP is probably behind the times which means you’re not getting the best bang for your buck. If the website doesn’t have a ‘checkout cart’, the ISP is paying people to do the job which is expensive and means they will struggle to remain competitive. If the website offers you everything from website design, website hosting through to cheap phone calls and cell phones, they probably won’t be as able to give you cheap, fast, reliable internet access – trust me, we’ve been there! What do you hope to achieve within the next year? More and more happy customers. Which three words best describe your work philosophy? Absolutely love it. K www.webafrica.co.za

Tim joined Webafrica as CEO in 2011. English by birth (with an unfortunate accent),Tim is otherwise South African, and a Webafrican to his core.Tim moved to Cape Town in 1998 to found Storm Telecom with Tim Parsonson.Ten years later, in 2008, they sold Storm to Vox Telecom (complete with 6,000 business customers and almost 200 staff situated across the country). After dabbling in non-internet start-ups for a couple of years following that,Tim realised he wasn’t very good at much else. So, when he was introduced to Webafrica, he knew he had found his calling, and grabbed at the opportunity to invest in and run this super ISP-in-the-making. He’s not a techie, but he knows what customers want and spends his time trying to give them exactly that.
