FOR THE LOVE OF NOUGAT
Sally Williams chooses Central Square
K
eep calm and eat treats – that’s our plan for this year. And we fully intend to start at the brand-new bespoke Sally Williams destination store in Central Square in the Menlyn Maine precinct.
Central Square, corner of Corobay and Aramist Avenue in the Menlyn Maine precinct.
If you don’t know who Sally Williams is, then we’re about to change your life. Sally is a renowned South African chef who found her love of nougat while travelling through Marrakesh. Determined to find the perfect confectionary, she ventured far and wide, sampling tasty mounds of nougat until she created her own. The rest is sweet, sticky history. The new store was designed by Dakota Interior Architecture to highlight the iconic brands range of mouth-watering delights. It was specifically designed to give shoppers an indulgent sensory experience, and introduce the uninitiated to the world’s finest honey nougat. Just hold on a second, because the deal gets sweeter… Sally Williams has also introduced a gourmet range of handcrafted ice cream, all of which contains hearty chunks of either Sally Williams nougat, or Sally Williams Turkish Delight. Seriously, who doesn’t love ice cream? This indulgent journey continues towards a carefully selected range of gourmet milkshakes and Belgian waffles, all of which use a generous smattering of delicious Sally Williams products as their main ingredients. And we’re still not done… there’s also an exclusively supplied range of Sally Williams single origin coffees and a selection of pastries, which all contain Sally Williams products! If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, then don’t fret. There is also a selection of tasty savoury items on sale. The Sally Williams destination store in Central Square opened its doors in mid-December 2017, so be sure to pop on over and stock up on deliciousness! Did you hear that? That was our New Year diet flying out the window.

hy not start your new year with a long, lazy lunch at Tin Roof Café, situated in the utterly relaxing environment off the Boschkop road in Pretoria East. It’s one of our favourite spots to hit for fantastically made cuisine, while sipping on a light rosé wine. The Tin Roof Café is so ideal to end off your festive holidays and begin the New Year with a clear mind, and a relaxed essence - ready to tackle anything January will throw at you. A counter-like restaurant that offers lunches and dinner, with the utmost dedication to make sure each dish is perfect, this venue can also be used for weddings, bridal showers, dinner parties and even a romantic lunch.
START THE NEW YEAR… on a relaxed note
There are peacocks roaming around and white ducks swimming in the pond, as the fountain gently creates a soft, relaxing ambiance. We highly recommend starting your meal with a salt and pepper calamari dish, or perhaps the green carpaccio; which is thinly sliced zucchini served with fresh lemon, parmesan, fruity olive oil, Maldon sea salt and roasted pine nuts. After something a bit heartier? We can totally vouch for the butternut gnocchi. Next up, treat yourself to the Norwegian Salmon; served with an herb crust, chardonnay beurre blanc and new potatoes. Another one of our top choices, and in all honesty, one of the dishes that keeps us coming back, is the pizza Nomu. This simple combination of artichokes, mushrooms, olives and truffle oil will leave your mouth watering for more! Seriously, take our word on this one!
Words & Images Cassidy Taylor-Memmory
Take a stroll through the beautiful gardens, with views of the bushveld and simple country settings before settling down for dessert. Is there anything better than a light Pavlova with cream and passion fruit to end your meal on a sweet note? Feel like something on the savoury side? There’s an indulgent cheese board that features French brie, gorgonzola dolce latte, mature fontina and luxury Melba. Tin Roof Café is popular, so we recommend booking beforehand - especially if you’re heading for a fabulous lunch with a group of friends on the weekend. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Only open for dinner on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 6pm, and from Fridays to Sundays from lunchtime. You certainly don’t need an excuse to indulge in their dessert offerings. These aren’t your average desserts; these are laced with decadence, gluttony and a whole lotta sugary goodness! Spoil your coils
with L’Oreal Curl Nourishment
When L’Oreal Curl Nourishment launched, we were a bit skeptical, especially since brands have been trying for years to master the art of treating ethnic hair - and failing. This begged the question, ‘how could L’Oreal fleek up natural hair when it hasn’t necessarily been L’Oreal’s target market since its inception? Now, we’ll the team at L’Oreal did their research when creating these new products… The Curl Nourishment products have honestly changed the game for thick haired black women everywhere. Our digital contributor, Khanyi Mlaba tried and tested these goodies, and here were here results. ‘After taking out my braids (which lasted for five months) my hair was in desperate need of TLC. The knots were bigger than usual, and my hair had grown too thick to comb through without pulling out chunks.’ Cue the Curl Nourishment Masque!
18
Hello Pretoria • January 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za
Khanyi insists this product is made of magic. If you’re struggling with maintaining thick hair, she suggests you step into the shower with the masque and a de-tangling comb. Wash your hair and then part it with the comb. Layer on the masque while combing through each parting consecutively. The label says to apply a walnut sized amount, but everyone’s hair is different, so apply a generous amount. Rinse off, blow or air dry, and all the knots that brought tears to your eyes will slide right out. Seriously, they’ll leave voluntarily! Having used the product for over a month, Khanyi reveals it’s a wonder. The Oil-In-Balm is equally as satisfying as a product. Be warned however, that if you have hair that’s sensitive to an alcohol base, try not to overdo it. As much as its suggested you use it as a protectant from heat, Khanyi suggests using it sparingly, as to not dry out your hair. All-in-all, L’Oreal Elvive Curl Nourishment gets a double thumbs up! It’s easy to use, has a divine scent and gives a smoother and softer texture to your coils. Results may be different on protein sensitive hair or thinner hair, because as we know, there are many variations of ethnic hair. Above everything, listen to your hair’s needs before trying a new product! 5 www.loreal.co.za | t @Loreal |

t’s beautiful having black hair… its versatility and strength is a wonder. The way coils become locks, locks turn in to braids, braids transform into a ‘fro. It’s art. It’s only recently that products celebrating black hair have become available so readily to the public. L’Oreal have jumped on the bandwagon, and it’s worth the hype.

arts&culture NOT a Market…
The Act of Motion; A group of people working together to advance their shared idea; The visualization of a trend. The Social Market is no mere market. It is, in every essence of the word, a movement, combining all elements of multi-faceted creation. You’ve never been to a market like this. Don’t argue, just accept the fact that you’ve never encountered a market so decadent in culture, and so stimulating in its being. It might just be the best market experience in the country, and we’ll stand by that statement! You’re not just strolling through stalls with your wallet in one hand and caramel popcorn in the other. It’s much more than that… You’re submerging yourself in a collision of the senses; smell, see, hear, feel and taste the market, it’s an Afro-chic wonder. If you haven’t realized that Africa is the most inspiring continent for the arts, then you’ve not lived in Africa. This is something the creators of Social Market took advantage of. They didn’t have to look far to find inspiration for the stand-out market. What they’ve dished out for us is a celebration of youth, Afrocentric style and unique entrepreneurship.
Out of the Spring Season of 2014, arose an amalgamation of colour, creation, scents, sounds and above all, style. The style of the young alternative African fashion enthusiast. Each person at the market is their own canvas; brushed, splattered and shaded with authentic fashion and eclectic style. The market hosts dozens of stalls that sell different forms of creations and crafts. It’s also laced with delicious food and drink for your enjoyment. Passers-by can get their photos taken by talented up-and-coming photographers, and grab inspiration for their wardrobes and personal style simply by looking around. Maitele Wawe, Thifhelimbilu Mudau and Sizophila Dlezi, a collaborative who go by the name ‘The Fashion Rebels’, are the ones to thank for this one-of-a-kind market experience. They sought a place where like-minded creatives could meet, socialize and possibly collaborate, and thus The Social Market was born. A place for the creative, the entrepreneur, the youth and the wanderer. The young market has even been internationally acclaimed, landing themselves international press as well as a photo feature in the US Online Magazine, Afropunk. The Social Market takes place on the first Sunday of every month in the heart of Pretoria, at creative event space, 012 Central. Do yourself the biggest favour, and follow the market, it’s worth it!

How it’s made: It takes about 7 to 8 years to grow and mature the ripe blue agave. Once harvested, it is baked in a traditional stone or brick oven for around 30 hours. Then it’s crushed using a 2-ton volcanic stone (called a Tahona) to squeeze out the juices. Volcanic water is added, and any remaining fibers removed before it is fermented in open-air wood tanks. Once fermentation is complete, the distinct flavor is created by twice distilling the liquid in two small copper pots – which have been in place since the distillery was built over 100 years ago!
Cool fact: Fortaleza is a 100% agave tequila that is hand-crafted in small batches in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. The distillery is family owned and can be found nestled on the slopes of an extinct volcano.
FORTALEZA MARGARITA RECIPE Add 3⁄4 oz of fresh squeezed lime juice, 1 oz of Cointreau, triple sec or another orange liqueur, 1 1⁄2 oz of Fortaleza Blanco tequila and a pinch of Kosher salt (optional) into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled margarita glass. Garnish with a fresh lime wheel. For a slightly sweeter drink, add a dash of agave syrup (one part water, two parts agave nectar) before shaking.

WHAT IF YOU HAD
48hrs in Cape Town? Time to go wild with British Airways Friday Evening – Make your escape
1pm – Life’s a beach
British Airways’ Friday schedule gets you out of Joburg (7pm or 8pm flight) or Durban (6pm) with enough time to settle in. Hire a car and take a 15-minute drive from the airport to the city, where the Belmond Mount Nelson awaits your arrival. The 5-star Cape Grace is also an elegant option if you want to be close to the V&A Waterfront. Checked in? Head to Salt River and order a craft beer and food pairing board at Devils Peak Taproom.
Clifton’s 4th Beach is a classic, but you may want to head for the more intimate Glen Beach off Camps Bay. It’s a great surf and sundowner spot. If the weather isn’t beach ready, visit the District Six Museum, followed by a walk up Buitenkant Street for a steampunk espresso at Truth roastery. Then browse rare and beautiful books at the wellstocked Book Lounge.
Saturday 9am – Get a caffeine hit
The epicentre of inner city revival is Heritage Square on Bree Street, an entertainment artery with rollicking bars at one end, and Liam Tomlin’s unbeatable Chef ’s Warehouse at the other. You can’t book at the latter, but there’s a cool ‘waiting bar’ downstairs. Next stop, Publik wine bar, home to Frankie Fenner Meats and the charcoal-fuelled Ash restaurant.
Head to the Woodstock Exchange on the fringe of the CBD, and kickstart your day with Ethiopian Yirgacheffe at Rosetta Coffee. Browse boutiques and galleries, marvel at Pedersen + Lennard’s furniture solutions, or fall in love with artisanal leatherwear at Urban Africa’s Atlier. 11am – Hike the ‘Pipe’ Put on your walking shoes and answer the call of Table Mountain. The Pipe Track on the Camps Bay side offers awesome views of the Twelve Apostles mountain range and is relatively flat.

Next stop - Constantia Neck. Change to the purple wine route bus and get off at Groot Constantia. Then walk 10m down the road to Beau Constantia, where the Cecily Viognier and Pierre Sauvignon-Semillon will blow you away almost as much as the view. Start with a 100% Angus beef classic cheeseburger from the short-order Mondial hatch. Then walk to the new Watershed market, home to over 150 designer stores such as Tiffany Marx’s Inspired Jewellery and Odeon’s home-grown homeware. After that, the Waterfront’s your oyster until it’s time to head out on the highway: you’ll need 25 minutes to get to Cape Town International. 7pm – Homeward bound The last flight out for Joburg (it’s earlier at 17:30 for Durbanites) will have you home in time to get a good night’s rest and be at work on Monday morning. Or go back up Bree to Mother’s Ruin. Sunday 8am - Go topless Sleep in, hit the breakfast buffet and prepare for a day of sensory overload. Find your way to a CBD stop of the topless, hop-on-hop-off City Sightseeing busses and let someone else do the driving while you enjoy the view. truggling to sleep, despite spending a fortune on a memory foam mattress, Egyptian cotton sheets and goose-down duvet? The problem may not lie with what’s in your bedroom, but most likely on how it’s laid out…
HOW TO Feng Shui your way to sleep!
There’s a reason the art of Feng Shui is still around – it works! It’s an ancient art and science developed centuries ago in China. It’s complex, but essentially, it teaches us to balance the energies in our chosen spaces – your home, office or garden – in order to achieve good fortune. Here’s 7 tips on how you can transform your boudoir into a free-flowing, good energy sanctuary…
1 2
Invest in a solid headboard: Just like your back, your head needs backing, protection and support – especially while you’re sleeping. A solid headboard, either upholstered or ones made of wood will contain your Chi energy and provide a barrier against negativity. Position our bed properly: Preferably as far from the door as possible, but not directly in line with it. However, you still want to be able to see the door, should any surprises come through it. The ideal position for the bed is to be diagonally positioned from the door. Try and place the head of the bed against a solid wall and not under any windows, as this may cause negative energies from outside to enter your bedroom. You want energy and Chi to be able to flow freely around and underneath the bed.
3
Try round nightstands: They’re not just fold holding lamps! A nightstand on either side of the bed creates balance. We say round because sharp angles can cause attacking energies, or Sha Chi to be directed directly at you while you sleep, which is when you are most vulnerable.
4
Toss the technology: Ok, maybe don’t toss it out completely, but certainly remove it from your abode. Televisions create an unhealthy magnetic field that can disrupt your sleep, and it can put strain on your romantic relationship by being a third party in the bedroom. If you can’t live without, invest in a closed TV cabinet to block it from when it’s not in use.
5
No mirrors: Mirrors are powerful in Feng Shui, but you certainly don’t want one facing your bed. Mirrors are too energetic for a restful space. If there are fixed mirrors in the bedroom, drape fabric over them.
6 7
Clear the clutter: No one wants a messy abode, are we right? Clutter is the number one enemy of Feng Shui, so make sure your bed is accessible from both sides and the Chi can circulate properly. Clean the windows: In Feng Shui, the windows are considered the eyes of the home, while the front door is the mouth. Make sure the windows are clear, and are able to open and close to bring clarity to the room. Hello Pretoria • January 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Dylan Christie, Wesley Reinecke and Rudolph de Villiers are the incredible talent behind this local Indie Rock trio. We Are Charlie, AKA WAC recently released a new single, and are about to drop their brand-new EP, so of course, we had to catch up with them…
7We minutes with Are Charlie Rumour is you’re releasing a new EP? Can you give us a name, and a taste of what to expect? We are indeed! The EP is called ‘Hey Dead Bird’, and sounds like something that will never be played on commercial radio. It was however, written straight from our hearts, and it’s something that we are extremely proud of. What inspires your music? I guess most of our songs are written out of experiences, heartbreaks and frustrations. What music do you enjoy listening to personally? Our music tastes vary quite

a lot, but we do have mutual favourites like Arctic Monkeys and Mariah Carey. What’s the most stressful part of being in a band? The life of a musician is not a care-free one at all. We might be putting in all this work for nothing, but we’d still choose this over sitting in an office any day! What do you enjoy most about being in a band? There are so many rewards to being in a band, but seeing the looks on faces in the crowd, and the feeling of being in second a family stand out. Where are your favourite places to eat out in Pretoria? Boxcar Eatery at Arcade Empire have the best street food in the world! Also, we enjoy pretty much anywhere where you’re not judged for getting drunk before your meal arrives.
What do you do when you’re not touring or making music? Dyl is in finance, Rudolph does a design every now and then, and Wes is all about that sound life. In your opinion, what’s the best thing about being South African? South Africa has a very rich variety of cultures and musical genres, so the possibilities really are endless. Also, being able to use words like ‘awe’ and ‘lakka boet’. Also, Oppikoppi. Any New Year resolutions? Keep growing as a band, and keep writing songs that don’t make people frown. 5 wearecharlie.co.za f @WeAreCharlieSA t @wearecharliesa @wearecharlie
Words Victoria Taylor
How did We Are Charlie come about? Dyl and Wes went to school together and immediately found a mutual love of unpopular music, so they decided to make some unpopular music together. Dyl and Rudolph met on a drunken night in a parking lot and immediately fell in love.
