President’s Message

By Jon Wormley

This year’s annual meeting will be held at the Clubhouse on Monday, November 7, 2022, at 7pm. I am pleased to advise that Eric Boberg , Vice President of Operations at Heritage Golf Group, has accepted my invitation to speak to the membership commencing at 6:30pm, ahead of the annual meeting. Eric’s discussion will be on the topic of the Heritage Operating and Capital budgeting process and I am sure he will review recent spends at our Port Royal Club. Eric has agreed to take questions from the membership if time permits. Again, the Annual meeting will commence at 7:00pm. The Annual meeting has only one item on the agenda requiring members approval, that is approval of the 2021 Annual Meeting minutes. We will ask the members to waive the reading of those minutes at the meeting and move quickly to approval those minutes. You may access the minutes in the Members Portal and copies will also be available in the Sports Shop. In this month’s Newsletter we have included two ballots for your voting. The first is the Absentee/Proxy Ballot. It will ensure we have a Quorum which allows us to conduct business at the annual meeting and the approval of last year’s minutes.

The second ballot is for the Election of 5 members or member spouses for our Board. Their term is for 2 years commencing January 1, 2023. The Nominating Committee has done an outstanding job in their selection of nominees. Dave Donnelly will announce the election results at our annual meeting. I wish them every success.

Due to ongoing repairs on the Admin Building, the secured ballot boxes, ballots, and copies of last year’s annual meeting minutes for examination will be located in the Sports Shop on or before October 1st. I ask you to vote early and place your completed ballots in the ballot boxes. Of course, you may bring your ballot with you to the annual meeting. Do not be surprised if board members ask if you have voted and if not, they will probably have ballots available with them for voting.

VOTE NOW

The Heritage Group system upgrade continues They have experienced a few hic-ups along the way, and you should not be surprised if a few more hic ups are experienced. It is a steep learning curve for everyone involved. I again ask our membership for patience and understanding. Be assured upon completion we will have a significantly improved result.

Port Royal Plantation Club, Inc Absentee/Proxy Ballot 2022

The Annual Meeting of the Port Royal Plantation Club will be held on Monday November 7 th,2022 commencing at 7:00pm at the Clubhouse.

We will seek approval to waive the reading of those minutes. However, those minutes are available to any member wishing to review the prepared minutes in the Member’s portal with copies available in the Sports Shop.

By signing below, I/We allow the 2022 PRPC, Inc Secretary, Judi Chmielowiec, to include my/our membership in the quorum count and to vote in approving the 2021 Annual meeting minutes as written. Playoff Drama: Whalen Brothers Work Overtime to Claim Heritage Invitational Title

Talk about a Cinderella story. Talk about an upset special. Talk about two guys bringing out their best stuff during an excruciating four hole marathon shootout (not to mention three crucial chip off victories).

Saturday's Heritage Invitational finale had all the elements of an instant classic, and when it was over, brothers Bill and Brendan Whalen were the last men standing. They claimed the prestigious 2022 member guest title at Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club with a hard fought victory over the team of Bill Hazel and John Welch on the first extra hole.

The Whalens admitted that they were among the long shots entering the Saturday's play. After two days, they occupied last place in their flight, earning a spot into the newly formed Survivor Flight, designed to reward slow starters with an avenue into the shootout if they could put it all together on Day 3. And the Whalens' Day 3 performance was pure magic.

Because they wound up tied for first in the five team Survivor Flight, the Whalens had to dig deep just to make it into the seven team shootout field. Bill and Brendon squared off against Rick D'Arienzo and Chuck Shaynak in a chip off to break the tie, and the Whalens won it in convincing fashion, with both of them chipping to within 2 feet.

So it was on to the first tee of Barony, where seven two man teams convened for two holes of alternate shot drama to whittle the field to four and then two teams. The contestants were Hilton Head Flight champions Guy Suchy and Jim Costa, Dafauskie Flight champions Ken Gerth and Jack Morrow, Pinckney Flight champions Hazel and Welch, Lady's Flights champions Jim Stauffer and Jack Leland, Dataw Flight champion Kevin and Steve Nattress, the wild card entry of John Simpson and Dewey Mullins and the Whalens out of the Survivor Flight.

Then an absolutely amazing thing happened: Despite playing an extremely difficult format in front of a large gallery in a high pressure environment, all 14 players come though like champs. The steely competitors, several of them carrying relatively high handicaps, took turns executing good drives, solid approaches, tidy chips and dead solid perfect putts. Not a single team faltered, resulting in seven gross pars. Five of the seven pars went into the books as net birdies, meaning that the Suchy Costa and Gerth Morrow teams suffered hard luck eliminations despite fine performances.

After the Nattress team was ousted in a five way chip off, the four remaining teams squared off on the par 3 second hole, where another three way tie resulted in another high pressure chip off. Team Hazel and Team Whalen prevailed to reach the pressure cooker final hole of the shootout.

After two holes of brilliant play, both teams encountered some alternate shot difficulty on the par 5 third hole with everything on the line. The hole was ultimately halved with double bogeys to force overtime.

The players and the large gallery returned to the No. 1 tee for the tiebreaker, where the alternate shot format was replaced by a two ball aggregate game. Hazel was heroic, sinking a 25 footer for birdie, but his partner found the trees and then the sand and could not recover. The Whalens came through smartly with a par and a bogey to nail down the cherished title, celebrating with high fives and fist pumps.

"I still can't believe we won," said Bill, a frequent Skins Game winner at the club whose handicap has been steadily declining all year. "I thought we were dead in the water after the first two days."

Brendan, a long hitting design and construction director at Boston Medical Center, agreed.

"I couldn't do anything right the first two days, but everything was clicking today," said Brendan, who is 9 years younger than Bill and sported a snappy Fedora on the course. "I think I shot 50 in the last round on Friday and then 37 on Saturday morning."

As happy as the brothers were after their triumph, their biggest fan seemed even more delighted. Donna Whalen, who was cheering loudly for her husband every step of the way, said, "I'm just glad that those new clubs Bill got worked out," she said. "They were really expensive."

Golf Report

By Bill Hazel

A quick note to start: As Hilton Head has apparently been transformed into a tropical rainforest, please be mindful of where you are driving your carts. Driving through saturated turf can really do a lot of damage and we have some holes (like 13 and 16 on Robbers and 1 and 17 on Barony) that are frequently saturated.

As mentioned in April, handicaps are a great way to create fair competition among golfers of varying skill levels and you should keep your handicap current if you play in tournaments. How exactly are handicaps calculated? After looking at the USGA rules, I can say that they are convoluted to a point where accountants or lawyers could empathize.

Every player has a handicap index which should be on the same scale as players who play elsewhere regardless of course difficulty. This is done by factoring in course difficulty (slope) when determining a player’s index. Naturally, a course’s slope rating changes depending upon which tee box is used. There is also an adjustment that can be made for playing conditions – if all scores from a course are high or low on a given day.

To calculate an index a player’s “adjusted score” is modified by the relative difficulty of the course and potentially the playing conditions to create a “score differential”. For most players, the lowest eight of the last twenty 18 hole score differentials are used to create the handicap index. Two 9 hole postings would be combined to create an 18 hole score. There are additional rules for incomplete rounds (completing 7 13 holes means posting a 9 hole score and 14 or more holes means posting an 18 hole score. Pretty exciting so far?

Remember an adjusted score limits the maximum score per hole you can use. The limit is double bogey plus whatever your handicap may be for that hole. For example, if my handicap was 18, I would have one stroke handicap per hole. Therefore, my maximum adjusted score would be 6, 7, or 8 depending if it were a par 3, 4 or 5. If my handicap was 1 (pure fiction), I could take double bogey plus 1 only on the number one handicap hole for all other holes I would be limited to double bogey.

Is that it? Of course not. If you post a score much lower than your average, then an extra point or two will be deducted for your index (“exceptional score”). There are also rules to slow down how quickly your index rises if you start posting higher scores. Your score can also be designated a “competition score” but that really doesn’t change anything just that the handicap police can see if there is a noticeable difference between your regular scores and your scores during tournaments.

After saying all of that, my recommendation would be to get the GHIN application for your smart phone, post your scores within the app, and trust the calculations. Best of luck to those that want to independently verify the numbers.

We are all sighing in relief from summers' raging heat and humidity. The Lady18's were fortunate to have had two great days on their first inaugural away Trip to Fripp Island in September. What a blast!!! Conversations abounded, libations were enjoyed, and our impromptu fashion show was truly a hit. Other activities were enjoyed, but as the saying goes, "what happens in Fripp stays in Fripp". Oh, we did play two rounds of golf.

With the coming of Autumn it's also the time for the 2022 PRLGA Stroke Play Championship. Round 1 will be played on October 11 and Round 2 will be played on October 18. Rain dates are October 25 and or November 1. Remember to sign up and while we all can't be the Champion we all can support the PRLGA .
