Sterling, IL - El 70º desfile anual Fiesta se celebrará el sábado 16 de septiembre de 2023. Este evento es organizado por el Comité de Líderes de Negocios Hispanos de la Cámara de Comercio del Área de Sauk Valley.
El desfile comenzará a la 1 pm en Rock Falls y terminará en Sterling.
Los participantes en el desfile se alinearán en la calle 10 en Rock Falls. El desfile se desplazará hacia el norte por la Primera Avenida en Rock Falls y cruzará el puente de la Primera Avenida hacia Sterling. En la base del puente, el desfile dará vuelta a la izquierda en 2nd St y se dirigirá hacia el norte por Locust Street hasta 4th Street, doblará hacia el este y terminará en Grandon Civic Center.
Después del desfile se celebrará una fiesta comunitaria hasta las 6 pm en el Grandon Civic Center. ¡La celebración incluye DJ Cabralio, Ay! Bailarines de Jalisco, Equipo Línea Directa, vendedores de comida y castillos inflables.

El Departamento de Parques y Recreación de Moline está agregando un nuevo servicio al sistema de parques de Moline.
La construcción de dos canchas de fútbol de minicancha en Stephens Park comenzará en las próximas semanas. Las canchas tendrán doble propósito, tanto para baloncesto como para fútbol sala, y se instalarán en el espacio verde en el lado oeste del parque, a lo largo de 4th Street. La actual cancha de baloncesto también será removida durante este proceso.
Este es un proyecto realmente emocionante ya que Moline será la primera ciudad en la QCA en instalar este tipo de cancha.
Chicago, IL - For the first time, the General Consulate of Mexico in Chicago will celebrate the “Gran Feria Educativa Consular” Mexican Consulate’s Education Fair. At this free event, our community can obtain information in Spanish or English about financial aid and educational scholarships, higher education programs, adult education programs, classes to learn English, and more.
The Consulate will also provide free textbooks in Spanish and there will be workshops on educational topics. This activity is part of the Binational Education Week 2023, organized by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad.

Moline Parks and Recreation Department is adding a brand new amenity to the Moline parks system. Construction on two Mini-Pitch Soccer Courts at Stephens Park will begin in the upcoming weeks. The courts will be dual-purpose for both basketball and futsal and will be installed in the green space on the west side of the park, along 4th Street. The current basketball court will also be removed during this process.
This is a really exciting project as Moline will be the first city in the QCA to install this kind of court.

The Mexican Consulate’s Education Fair will bring information in Spanish about scholarships and educational programs to the Latino community of Chicago
Las familias latinas se unen tanto en los buenos como en los malos tiempos. En la última adaptación cinematográfica de DC Universe de Blue Beetle, este concepto es presentado perfectamente por un elenco de latinos que seguramente se puede relacionar con muchos hogares y no solo con latinos. La película se estrenará en los cines de Estados Unidos y mundialmente el 18 de agosto de 2023. Xolo Maridueña interpreta a Jaime Reyes el Blue Beetle (el Escarabajo Azul), el primer superhéroe latino del DC Universe, junto con un elenco de actores que rápidamente se unieron y se convirtieron en una familia en el set. Hay una escena caótica particular que la actriz Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories”) dice: “Nuestro increíble y fenomenal director, Angel [Soto], simplemente nos dejó actuar libremente, y dijo ‘vayan’ y lo hicimos y fue muy divertido, y fue todo ese caos que se produciría en una familia latina”, dijo Escobedo, quien interpreta a la hermana menor del personaje principal. El personaje de Jaime Reyes es el tercer individuo en asumir los poderes de Blue Beetle. “El escarabajo original era un arqueólogo llamado Dan Garrett, quien descubrió un antiguo escarabajo en una antigua tumba egipcia que le dio superpoderes los cuales utilizó para combatir el crimen”. (www.dc.com). Jaime Reyes es un adolescente de El Paso, Texas, que está buscando sentido en su vida cuando encuentra el Escarabajo, y este lo elige para ser el próximo Blue Beetle.
Blue Beetle fue escrita por Gareth Dunnet Alcocer, originario de Guanajuato, México, dirigida por Angel Manuel Soto, nativo de San Juan, Puerto Rico, y protagonizada por un elenco de otros latinos como Damián Alcázar (“Narcos”), Raoul Max Trujillo (las películas de “Sicario”), Javier “Harvey” Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Adriana Barraza (“Thor”), Bruna Marquezine (“Maldivas”) y el actor y comediante, George López, quien interpreta al tío del personaje principal. La actriz, ganadora del Oscar, Susan Sarandon, también forma parte del reparto.
Esta es la primera vez que Blue Beetle y Xolo Maridueña hacen su debut en la pantalla grande. Blue Beetle fue introducido por primera vez por DC en 1939. En cuanto a Maridueña, ha estado actuando desde que tenía diez años (“Parenthood”), y también ha encontrado fama como Miguel Díaz en la serie de Netflix “Cobra Kai”. Sorprendentemente, Maridueña, de veintiún años, es un tipo normal y muy agradable. Su madre estaba detrás del escenario cuando apareció en The Trevor Noah Show, donde también relató cómo ha mantenido su mismo grupo central de amigos a lo largo de los años. Ya se han visto algunas comparaciones con Black Panther y el impacto cultural que puede tener porque Blue Beetle es el primer superhéroe de origen mexicano. Como Susan Sarandon compartió en The Tonight Show, “Lo fabuloso de esto, es el primer héroe LatinX que tiene
su propia película. Aún mejor... porque su familia es mexicana y todos los actores eran mexicanos o latinos”, agregó.
La película estaba originalmente programada para HBO Max antes de que Warner Bros la produjera para la pantalla grande. Esta es una gran oportunidad para que DC repare las tensiones con los fanáticos hispanos que se sintieron decepcionados por el intento de DC en 2022 de celebrar el mes de la Herencia Hispana creando portadas con sus superhéroes sosteniendo o comiendo comida callejera como tacos. Algunos fanáticos expresaron cómo la representación de estos héroes fue de mal gusto.
El ilustrador, Jorge Molina había creado una portada de Linterna Verde con el héroe sosteniendo una bandera verde en una mano con las letras “¡¡Viva México!! y una linterna en la otra mano. Pero la imagen que salió al publicó mostraba al superhéroe con tamales en lugar de una linterna. DC Comics le dijo a CNN que la portada de Green Lantern con los tamales no era la portada oficial. Después, la versión final de Molina se lanzó el 20 de septiembre de 2022.
Todas estas son señales prometedoras hacia un cambio positivo, incluyendo el debut de Blue Beetle en los cines con personajes que hasta niños latinos pueden admirar. Milwaukee, WI - Justo cuando el verano está a punto de terminar y los niños están listos para volver a la rutina de la escuela y el estudio, hay un festival de tres días que vale la pena incluir en tu agenda. Date una escapada de fin de semana a Milwaukee (desde Chicago es solo una hora y media). La tradición anual atrae a artesanos y actos musicales de renombre desde México y de todo el país. El primer año que se llevó a cabo la Fiesta Mexicana en Milwaukee fue en 1973 cuando se formó un comité para celebrar y preservar las tradiciones mexicanas. Fue alrededor del mismo año que el festival se estaba conceptualizando por primera vez que Los Bukis se estaban formando como grupo en México, y luego creció rápidamente
en estatus para vender millones de discos. Después de una larga trayectoria, el grupo se disolvió y cada miembro se fue por caminos separados. Después de 25 años, el grupo decidió volver a estar juntos en 2021 y ahora han estado de gira, pero solo en ciudades seleccionadas, incluido su estado natal de Michoacán, México, California y en Texas. Es un gran orgullo que un grupo icónico como Los Bukis forme parte de la Fiesta Mexicana en su 50 aniversario.

A mitad del festival, el 26 de agosto, The Lumineers también subirán al escenario en el Amp (se requiere entrada para el concierto). The Lumineers son una agrupación de folk alternativo con guitarras, batería, piano y violonchelo. El grupo ha sido certificado platino varias veces por su trayectoria y trae un ambiente familiar que combinara muy bien con el festival mexicano de Wisconsin.
Habrá algo para todos en el Festival Mexicano de Wisconsin. Este evento es ideal para comenzar una tradición anual, para crear recuerdos y aprender sobre la cultura latina.

Milwaukee, WI - Just when summer is about to wind down, and the kids are ready to go back to the routine of school and studying, there is a three-day festival worth squeezing into your schedule. You can make it a weekend getaway to Milwaukee (from Chicago it’s only about an hour-and-a-half car ride). The yearly tradition brings in artisans and bigname musical acts from Mexico and around the country. There are contests, giveaways, authentic cuisine and drinks, along with live music and dancing. This year’s festivities are extra special as it is the 50th year of this beautiful tradition that will culminate by the Milwaukee lakeside in an event that is affordable for the whole family to attend. The first year Mexican Fiesta took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin was in 1973 when a committee formed to celebrate and preserve Mexican traditions. Their goal was to provide an atmosphere of awareness and celebration. Most importantly, its mission was to raise funds for Hispanic kids to attend college. To date, the festival has raised approximately $1.7 Million for Latino college students.
This year, in addition to the activities and entertainment in the festival, there will concerts at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater, which is located right on the festival grounds. Fest organizers announced that to kick off the weekend’s festivities, Los Bukis will be playing the day before the festival starts, on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Tickets to the concert are on sale and are good for entry to the festival as well.
“Mexican Fiesta’s 50th anniversary is a great opportunity to honor our community’s strong tradition of hard work and commitment as well as its unique cultural heritage,”
Mexican Fiesta Executive Director Teresa C. Mercado added. “Having Los Bukis performing as our kick-off celebration emphasizes the historical momentum and represents the beginning of a remarkable collaboration between FPC Live, Mexican Fiesta and Milwaukee World Festival.”
It was around the same year that the festival was first being conceptualized that Los Bukis were forming as a band in Mexico, and then quickly grew in status to sell millions of records. After a long trajectory, the group disbanded, and each member went their separate ways. After 25 years, the group decided to get back together in 2021 and have now been on tour, but only in select cities, including their home state of Michoacan and Mexico, California and Texas. It’s quite a treat to have an iconic group like Los Bukis be part of Mexican Fiesta on its 50th anniversary.
There will be other stellar acts within the festival grounds (no extra charge), including Ezequiel Peña, playing his norteñas and corridos, Hijos de Barron, Gerardo “El Jerry” Coronel, Grupo Palomo, playing their well-known ballads and Tejano-style hits. Also, fest-attendees will enjoy music by Alex Fernandez, the son of legendary singer, Vicente Fernandez, Ray Ruiz and his salsa stylings from Cuba, Aida Cuevas and her traditional Mariachi style, and more.
Mid-festival, on August 26th, The Lumineers will take the stage at the Amp, too (concert ticket required). The Lumineers are an alternative folk band with guitars, drums, piano and cello. The three-time certified platinum group has the family appeal and sing-along style that pairs so well with Wisconsin’s premier Mexican festival.
There is something for everyone at Wisconsin’s Mexican Festival, a great place to start a yearly tradition, make memories and to learn about Latino culture.

Sterling, IL - The 70th annual Fiesta Parade will be held Saturday, September 16, 2023. This event is organized and implemented by the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Hispanic Business Leaders Committee.
The parade will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Rock Falls and end in Sterling.
This tradition not only celebrates Mexican Independence Day but also it is there to honor the variety of rich and colorful cultural contributions that Hispanics brought to this region of the country. After 70 years of great celebrations planned by the old Latin American Social Club in Sterling, IL, the torch of carrying on with this tradition was passed to The Hispanic Business Leaders Committee at the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce.
Parade entries will line up on 10th Street in Rock Falls. The parade will travel North on First Avenue in Rock Falls and cross the First Avenue bridge into Sterling. At the base of the bridge the parade will turn left on to 2nd St and will travel
North on Locust Street to 4th Street, turn east, and end at Grandon Civic Center.
A community celebration will be held after the parade until 6:00 p.m. at Grandon Civic Center. The celebration includes DJ Cabralio, Ay! Jalisco Dancers, Equipo Linea Directa, food vendors, and bounce houses.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the Sauk Valley’s annual Fiesta Parade, all past parade Dons, Doñas, and Queens are invited to participate in the parade. Previous Dons, Doñas, and Queens are requested to contact the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce to register. In DC Universe’s latest film adaptation of Blue Beetle, this concept is portrayed perfectly by a cast of Latinos surely to be relatable to many households, not just Latinos. The film is set to be released in U.S. theaters and worldwide on August 18, 2023.
Xolo Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes, the Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero of the DC Universe, along with a cast of actors that quickly bonded and became a family on set. There is a particular chaotic scene that actress Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories”) says, “Our incredible and phenomenal director, Angel [Soto], just let us run wild, he was just like ‘go,’ and we did and it was so much fun, and it was all that chaos that would ensue in a Latino family,” said Escobedo, who plays the main character’s younger sister. The character of Jaime Reyes is the third individual to take on the powers of Blue Beetle. “The original Beetle was an archaeologist named Dan Garrett, who discovered an ancient Scarab in an old Egyptian tomb that gave him superpowers which he used to fight crime.” (www.dc.com). Jaime Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, Texas who is looking for meaning in his life when he finds the Scarab, and it chooses him to be the next Blue Beetle.
Blue Beetle is written by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer, originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, directed by Angel Manuel Soto, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and stars a cast of other Latinos such as Damian Alcazar (“Narcos”), Raoul Max Trujillo (the “Sicario” films), Javier “Harvey” Guillen (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Adriana Barraza (“Thor”), Bruna Marquezine (“Maldivas”), and actor/comedian, George Lopez, who plays the main character’s uncle. Academy-award-winning actress Susan Sarandon also stars in the film. This is the first time both Blue Beetle and Xolo Maridueña have made their debut on the big screen. Blue Beetle was first introduced by DC in 1939. As for Maridueña, he
has been acting since he was ten years old (“Parenthood”), and has made a name for himself as Miguel Diaz in Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” series. Surprisingly, the twenty-oneyear-old Maridueña is a down-to-earth and congenial guy. His mom was backstage when he appeared on The Trevor Noah Show, where he also related how he has maintained his same core group of friends over the years. Already, there have been some comparisons to Black Panther and the cultural impact it can have because Blue Beetle is the first superhero who is Mexican-American. As Susan Sarandon shared on The Tonight Show, “What’s fabulous about it, it’s the first LatinX hero that has his own movie. Even better...because his family is Mexican and all the actors were Mexican or Mexican-American,” she added. The film was originally slated for HBO Max before Warner Bros. picked it up for production for the big screen. This is a great opportunity for DC to mend tensions with Hispanic fans who were disappointed by DC’s attempt in 2022 to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by creating covers with their superheroes holding or eating street food like tacos. Some fans expressed how the portrayal of these heroes was tone-deaf.
Illustrator Jorge Molina had created a Green Lantern cover of the hero holding a large green flag in one hand that reads “Viva Mexico!! and a lantern in the other hand. But the image that was reported to be released showed the superhero holding a bucket of tamales instead of a lantern. DC Comics told CNN that the Green Lantern cover featuring the tamales was not the official cover. The final version by Molina was then released on September 20, 2022. These are all positive signs for change, including the debut of Blue Beetle in theaters with characters even little Latinos can look up to. It’s an action-packed ride, emphasized by Bobby Krlic’s powerful soundtrack and a charismatic cast that portrays the struggles and triumphs inside a Latino home with the underlying universal theme of love and the power of family.

With mariachi music, food, and dancing, all are sure to be entertained by this amazing event. Performers include Quad City Ballet Folklorico, Mariachi Los Aguilares, and Crooked Cactus Band and the delicious dinner will be catered by El Mariachi.

The fiesta will begin at 5:00 pm with a social hour and music from Mariachi Los Aguilares. Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm, catered by El Mariachi, followed by the program and performances. The Putnam Museum will also be bringing out some Day of the Dead Skulls from the collection and displaying them all day Saturday. The Fiesta event is $20 per person at the door and includes the entirety of the event and dinner. The proceeds for this event benefit the LULAC scholarship fund which helps students attend college.
Earlier in the day the Putnam will be celebrating Monarchs & Mariachi with activities and events
all included in the price of museum admission. We will celebrate the migration of monarch butterflies throughout the day. Starting at 2:00 pm we will have drop in butterfly crafts, a photo booth, and a special tour of our new regional history exhibit Common Ground: Our Voice, Our Stories. The tour, led by expert Putnam staff, will focus on the Latino influence in the Quad Cities. At 3:00 pm Flight of the Butterflies 3D will be shown in the GIANT Screen Theater, there is an additional charge for the movie. From 4:00-4:45 pm Mariachi Los Aguilares will play mariachi music throughout the museum. Museum guests are encouraged to enjoy butterfly activities and Latin culture during their visit to the museum.
