The crucial importance of environmental sustainability is a message that can never be repeated too often. This northern hemisphere summer, for example, as dwindling water reserves and heatwave conditions sadly wreaked havoc on our natural surroundings – with both flora and fauna seriously affected – the issue was firmly at the top of the public agenda.
While not everyone shares the same levels of concern about the consequences of certain damaging aspects of our modern-day lifestyles, the reality is that we all benefit from cautionary reminders of how we can make everyday contributions to helping to protect the planet’s fragile habitats. The good news is that this can be achieved in many simple, convenient and relatively painless ways, from having a quick shower rather than soaking in a bath to using more natural elements when refurbishing our home or purchasing new furniture. The home, as always, is key.
To that end, there will be plenty of valuable advice available, post-summer, from industry professionals presenting their latest trends, ideas and innovations at several major home décor and design exhibitions in September. Already it is clear that the issue of sustainability – and its positive effects on social, economic and environmental cohesion – will be predominant and pivotal.
At Maison&Objet in Paris, from 7 to 11 September, the main message will be: respect, reduce, re-use.
“Let’s work together for a more conscious future,” say the organisers. “Because today, we are all responsible for combining beauty with what’s beneficial, Maison&Objet Paris has committed over the past few years to making its event ever more sustainable, just as it continues to support ethical brands that are shaking up the world of design. With a sustainable itinerary through the fair, an enchantingly natural feel within the event, organic restaurants, and more… It always feels good to spot conscious products.”
Later in the month (16-24 September), London Design Festival will host more than 300 events, with designers “showcasing how they are rethinking spaces to nurture well-being, synthesising cuttingedge technology with age-old craft, and building a more ethical future through materials”.
At Intergift in Madrid (13 to 17 September), up-and-coming trends for the autumn-winter season will include the use of natural elements and earthy colours, and re-using materials to give them a second life. “Different textures are combined to create welcoming ambiences in functional and comfortable rooms. Front and centre stage is the need for sustainability in all decorative items and the use of all resources to make them durable and environmentally-friendly.”
Spain’s premier furniture and lighting fair, Feria Hábitat València, begins two days later and continues until 22 September. In tune with a new image aimed at “exploring raw materials to reveal the soul of interiors”, this year’s exhibition is dedicating expanded space for exhibits (more than 600 Spanish and international companies will be represented) by opening a new hall for avant-garde furniture. This packed month of global design showcases also covers the Nordic region, with Stockholm Design Week (pop-up edition) held from 5 to 9 September and Helsinki Design Week from 8 to 17 September
In the meantime, an intriguing report from Australia highlights how little sparks of ingenuity can, as the Spanish saying goes, “aportar nuestro grano de arena” (literally translated as “contribute our grain of sand”). “Doing our bit” in this case involves coffee grains rather than sand, as engineers involved in a Melbourne university study are reportedly using roasted coffee grounds to produce 30 per cent stronger cement.
The ultimate plan is not only to preserve reserves of river sand but also to reduce contamination of coffee residues at rubbish dumps. Just a small step in the overall scheme of things, but nevertheless an important one on our journey to a more sustainable future.

EMBRACING THE BEAUTY OF NATURE WITH OUTDOOR LIVING
Outdoor living is an activity that we are privileged to enjoy in southern Spain almost all year round. So our outdoor furniture is an important investment that should not only reflect our personal style but also show a continuation of our design taste from inside to outside, offering an uninterrupted aesthetic flow throughout the home. With a plethora of design showrooms on the Costa del Sol working with exciting and innovative brands that supply outdoor furniture, it can be a minefield when deciding where to head first.
To get the most out of your investment, good-quality materials that are highly weather-resistant are a must on a longevity and practical level. When it comes to design, natural warm colours have become extremely popular, and rightly so… earthy colours blend into the natural beauty of the surroundings, giving a more harmonious overall aesthetic.

A LIVING ROOM WHERE COMFORT AND STYLE CONVERGE
Fusing comfort with style in terms of design is important in all areas of the home. However, as guests are likely to visit the living room more than any other room, the emphasis on getting this combination right is heightened. Creating a room where you and your guests can relax and interact, and which perfectly represents your personal design style, can be a balancing act that is difficult to get right. When you achieve that goal you will not only want to spend more time there yourself but you will also leave a long-lasting impression with your guests. The sofa is often regarded as the focal point of any living room, providing a blend of comfort and style highlighted by contemporary living, minimalism with clean silhouettes, and plush cushions. Upholstery in luxurious materials such as leather and velvet is always popular, but bouclé is also prevailing as a new trend, as well as the corduroy look – which is more casual and never seems to go out of fashion. Neutral tones will always be a staple, from soft greys to warm taupe, making the sofa an easy way to complement the rest of the room design and the choice of colours surrounding it. Statement armchairs are a great way to inject personality into the room. Whether you go for a sculptural piece or a pop of colour, they add a punch, especially if the room is fairly neutral. You can also make a statement with your coffee table and even side tables, as they not only provide a resting place for objects and decorative items, but can also make an artistic statement if you opt for a sculptural design. Here is some inspiration for your living room…

EXQUISITE TABLEWARE DESIGNS
The wonderful world of tableware is often regarded as the final flourish, extending its use beyond mere functionality and contributing a personal design touch to the overall look of a table setting. From vivid hues and daring patterns to simple neutral plains, the ensuing trends in tableware design are poised to ignite creativity and enhance the dining occasion. Amidst the tableware landscape, simplicity emerges as an undoubted sovereign aspect, transcending eras and seamlessly integrating into diverse interior styles with its understated refinement. Organic tones, shapes and materials are especially popular, creating a casual homely look. Pure white will always prevail in new collections, as it is timeless and offers an element of sophistication – enhancing the visual appeal of food placed on the tableware. However, tableware can also serve as a canvas for creative expression, where vibrant colours, intricate motifs and striking patterns take centre stage, bestowing an aesthetically captivating quality on table arrangements, brimming with character and theatrical flair. The art of melding and juxtaposing patterns, hues and textures offers an additional avenue to inject individuality and a sense of whimsy into the dining experience. Coloured glass has become more prominent in recent collections, adding a playfully transparent touch. Coloured glass plates are great to mix-and-match with ceramic or porcelain plates to give added interest to the table.

SAVOURING STYLE WHEN DINING AT HOME
The dining area does not just simply have to be a functional space where you eat. You can make this important part of the home a visual delight by contrasting materials, colours and textures to add a designer touch. For those who would rather stay minimalist, sleek dining chairs with slender profiles and dining tables with clean lines all have their place, but investing in good materials that will stand the test of time – and can take the odd bash from a heavy cooking pot, serving plate or decorative vase – will pay off in the long run.
With an increasing emphasis on sustainability and the environment, dining furniture crafted from natural and sustainable materials is as popular as ever. Tables made from reclaimed wood, chairs upholstered in organic fabrics, and finishes that highlight the natural grain of wood have become a common choice, especially as they also add an earthy warmth to dining spaces. Dining areas can be eclectic, minimalist, sculptural and artistic, depending on your own personal style. Whether you are bringing your family or a group of friends together, a stylish and ergonomic dining table and chairs set adds to the gastronomic pleasures, allowing diners to enjoy the experience in comfort and style.

WEAVING MAGIC INTO LIVING SPACES
We all know that fabrics are transformative when it comes to interior design, including outdoor spaces. The difference that curtains, upholstery fabric and cushions can make to a space means that textiles are the unsung heroes of any well-designed home, playing an important role in creating the perfect ambience to convert a house into a home.
Upgrading your furniture with new upholstery fabric can breathe life into a tired sofa, chair or ottoman, giving you the option to preserve that treasured furniture item you fell in love with when you first bought it – while simply giving it a facelift with a stylish new textile.
Framing windows with curtains not only shields us from the outdoors by providing privacy, and protection from glaring sunlight, wind and dust, but also offers a decorative finished look. Elegant drapes, colours and patterns in luxurious silks, velvets and rustic linens offer a sense of cosiness, effortlessly elevating any space to new heights.
Cushions are often seen as the icing on the cake when it comes to the world of fabrics – as they are easy to add and can be quite inexpensive. However, when good-quality fabrics are used for your cushions, they immediately elevate the look of your sofa or armchair – adding a luxurious touch with very little effort. Here is some material (excuse the pun) to inspire you…

ENCHANTING WALLS
One of the most transformative and expressive elements in any design project is arguably walls. While paint certainly has its charm, there is something captivating about wallcoverings and wallpapers that add depth, texture and personality to a space like no other element. Whether you are looking to create a statement wall or prefer a subtle design, wallcoverings can elevate your interior to new heights.
There is no denying the impact a statement wall can make in a room, showcasing creativity and artistic expression and adding a focal point that draws attention. From geometric motifs that exude contemporary elegance to nature-inspired murals that bring the outdoors inside, statement walls redefine the very essence of interior design. However, subtle design can also breathe life into spaces with a gentle touch. Delicate patterns, soft hues and elegant textures speak volumes without taking over a room. Subtle wallpapers can complement other design elements seamlessly, allowing furniture, art and décor to shine alongside them. Take a look at these ideas…

ENTERING INTO THE REALM OF RUGS
Tactile and aesthetic qualities are a pivotal facet in rug composition, engendering depth and tangible allure. Examples such as chunky knit rugs, luxuriously shaggy flokatis and intricately braided jute rugs add textural dimensions to a living space. The trend of layering rugs also permits further experimentation with diverse textures and designs, thereby providing dimensions and visual impact to your floors. Furthermore, vintage and antique rug selections have experienced a robust resurgence in recent times, imparting a trace of history and charisma to modern interiors that seamlessly blend the vintage with the contemporary.
In the realm of rug design, geometric configurations continue to captivate, offering a modern and well-defined allure. From audacious stripes and dynamic chevrons to intricate hexagonal formations and diamonds, geometric rugs possess the capacity to introduce visual intrigue and an avant-garde flair to any area. Go for contrasting colour palettes or a monochromatic design to produce a striking central focus to a room.

CONTEMPORARY BATHROOM DESIGN
Minimalism and open-plan layouts have been popular trends in contemporary home design for many years now, with bathroom companies embracing this movement by offering wall-mounted fixtures, concealed storage solutions and floating vanities for a clutter-free ambience. Fussy hardware has become less fashionable and, instead, sleek faucets, handle-less cabinets and hidden drawer pulls all help to create a modern look. Neutral and earthy colour palettes, together with natural materials such as stone, marble and wood, are seen more than ever in contemporary-style bathrooms, and understandably so as nature always provides a feeling of purity and serenity – ideal for creating a spa-like bathroom environment and bringing the outdoors into the home. Instead of a bathroom being just a functional space, the lines are blurred between its own design and that of the rest of the home, by making the bathroom a more welcoming and relaxing space to enjoy with the addition of chandeliers, wallpapers, armchairs and wardrobes, for example. There is no reason why your design style has to stop at the bathroom door. Creating a sense of continuity throughout your home that also includes your bathrooms will pay off in the overall aesthetic. With a few tweaks you can turn a standard bathroom into a space that you truly want to relax in, and leave feeling refreshed and pampered, just like you would if you visited a spa…

A GLOBAL AND SUSTAINABLE PERSPECTIVE COMBINING SCANDINAVIAN AND ETHNIC DESIGN
INTERVIEW WITH JOHANNA WECKSTRÖM – FOUNDER AND OWNER OF ZOCO HOME
Tell us about Zoco Home’s origins and background.
I was inspired by my travels as a young girl with my father, an importer of traditional Mexican decoration. The apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. I share the same love and passion for undervalued and uniquely beautiful pieces that my father had.
Travelling has always been a part of my life, and in 2013 Zoco Home was founded on the concept of travelling as a way of life and work. I began selling treasures I found in my travels online and these were Zoco Home’s humble beginnings. It is so interesting to understand different cultures and to travel to countries around the world. It has opened my eyes and given me a different perspective on life and the beauty of life.
What prompted Zoco Home to open its showroom in Mijas?
Zoco Home has come a long way since its conception. What was originally a bridge between unique finds from our travels and the public is now something much more complex. With the expansion of our catalogue, we offer a wider-than-ever range of furniture and home décor.
Our first showroom in Mijas has gradually expanded over the years to make room for our interior design studio and even more exhibition space (now including two floors extending over 1,500 square metres).
How has Zoco Home evolved since its beginnings?
The past decade we have grown into an established brand with a loyal following, and the future looks very promising. Our latest collections and projects show that we are not afraid to take risks, push boundaries, and stay true to our mission of creating beautiful spaces. Our core values of simplicity and authenticity are now developing new roots as we look towards a more sustainable future, and we constantly look to improve our social responsibility as a brand.
As we reflect on the past 10 years, we reminisce about the people and clients who have been with us from day one and everyone else along the way who has contributed to our story. Beyond our commercial purpose, Zoco Home
has fortuitously built a sense of community within the company, which has resulted in a culture of passion and innovation.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to our clients, collaborators and team for their loyalty and support, and feel sure that we will have many more years together. Ten years full of passion, perseverance and a lot of work has allowed us to consolidate ourselves as a prestigious brand, a standard-bearer in Europe. We continue to grow with the firm conviction that we are laying solid foundations for an even more exciting future.
What do you believe Zoco Home’s success can be attributed to?
Throughout the years, we have collaborated with different designers, property developers and real estate agencies, creating inspiring projects. Our client base has continued to grow and we have made a name for ourselves in this competitive industry as pioneers of our unique ethnic Scandinavian style. We now have an extensive portfolio full of remarkable architectural projects (adding locations including Mykonos, Barcelona, Miami and Bali). Our clients range from industry professionals and international businesses to private individuals. When it comes to interior design projects, there is no limit. Some of our biggest clients have been international holiday resorts all around the world. Our main client base comprises European expats who live permanently or holiday on the Costa del Sol, and who are looking to build their dream home. Through our online business and physical showroom in Mijas we are able to reach clients who aren’t looking for interior design services but who love our pieces and are just redecorating and making some changes in their homes.
Zoco Home has its own significant style – how would you define it?
The style that identifies Zoco Home is a hybrid of classic Scandinavian and ethnic design. I carefully choose the pieces that form our collections, placing raw materials in the limelight. The focus is on finding pieces that use local and exotic wood, fibres and textiles that combine with each other effortlessly in our interior design projects. This is why our image is so identifiable, a style
FIRST PERSON ...
158 SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2023
that incorporates sharp and ergonomic Scandinavian design and the perfectly imperfect forms of ethnic pieces.
“There is a story in everything” is a phrase that highlights the essence of what our company is about – a commitment to sharing the stories behind our most treasured pieces forms the foundation of our brand today. It is our responsibility to be well-informed about the sourcing and origins of our pieces, and our mission is to convey these stories to our clients when purchasing and adorning their homes with our products.
What are the main services you offer?
Interior design, renovations, decoration and kitchens, covering both residential and commercial projects. We work with private individuals, businesses and professionals, offering our products and services and providing them with latest design solutions and one-of-a-kind decoration ideas. Our online store includes our complete and updated furniture and home décor catalogue, with international shipping and exclusive promotions. At our showroom and design studio in Mijas, you can try and feel products before
buying them, complemented by personalised sales service and friendly staff who are always ready to help.
And finally, social media is where we have the biggest influence, delivering daily interior design inspo, latest news, design tips, new arrivals, collaborations, etc.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Liaising with clients and delivering the final results of interior design projects. Designing a place is a really personal thing, so we have actually ended up being great friends with a lot of our clients. They always invite us over to their homes and that is what is so special about designing and decorating. We make people so happy and those emotions are just priceless.

NEW CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY WITH A TWIST IN PUERTO BANÚS
INTERVIEW WITH DYLAN KING — CO-OWNER OF TWISTED ART GALLERY
PHOTOS BY JOHNNY GATES
How did three guys from Aberdeen end up opening an art gallery in Puerto Banús?
My father and I came here on holiday and bumped into Kevin, who was already living here, in a restaurant in Sotogrande. My father went to college with Kevin and it was a total surprise as they hadn’t seen each other for decades! All three of us are avid art collectors, and between us had accumulated quite large personal collections.
My father and I were working with each other in my father’s wholesale food company back in Scotland, and Kevin was involved in property development, but our passion has always been art, so it seemed like an obvious step to open our own gallery together.
What is the style of art you are showcasing and which artists are you working with?
We love contemporary art, especially pop art, and this is really what we have decided to concentrate on. After all, this is what we hang on our walls at home. We have original artwork from Alec Monopoly, Banksy, Mr Brainwash, Opake, Pure Evil and The Connor Brothers, to name but a few. Most of the artists are personal friends of ours, which helps us build more of a relationship and knowledge about the art that they produce.
FIRST PERSON ...
160 SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2023
You are working with very high-profile artists – does this mean that you are catering mainly for the rich and famous?
Not at all, as we want art to be accessible to everyone. We have works ranging from below €1,000 right up to millions, so there is something for everyone’s price range. We don’t want to be perceived as a stuffy art gallery because we are certainly not that. We have music playing and we are very relaxed and welcome anyone to come and peruse the gallery in whatever they want to wear, and just enjoy the whole experience.
You have already had great success – why do you think this has happened so quickly?
First of all, we are in a fabulous location in Puerto Banús so that is a great start. The artwork we are exhibiting is all from our own personal collections and, as we love it so much, we assume/hope that there are many other people who feel the same way also!
We have been busy networking and have already held events here where we invite a particular artist to come and meet our guests. The events have been great fun and very popular, and we have sold several pieces just on those nights alone, so we have found the events really work for us.
How are you trying to develop the business?
The general public is obviously very important to us but we are also very interested to meet professionals, such as interior designers and hotel owners for example. We have already made agreements with a prestigious hotel here in Marbella to hold satellite exhibitions of our artwork. These kinds of collaborations are great for us as well as for them, so we are excited to see how it goes. We also offer our gallery to those who would like to hold events here. Obviously, every situation has to be carefully considered but we provide a fabulous venue for anyone who would like to hold a cocktail party surrounded by beautiful artwork.
Twisted Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 8pm (although times are subject to change).

THE ART OF LUXURY LIVING THE GALLERY IN PALO ALTO, MARBELLA ENGEL & VÖLKERS
In the beautiful enclave of Marbella, where the mountains serenade the sea, a masterpiece of luxury residential living is taking shape. Welcome to The Gallery, the crown jewel of gated luxury villa communities. And no, this isn’t just another high-end property pitch – this is an invitation into an elite circle, an unmatched lifestyle narrative, a piece of Marbella’s evolving tapestry.
As its name suggests, The Gallery is where art meets architecture. The villas are nothing short of masterpieces, named after iconic artists Monet, Van Gogh, Klimt and Pollock. These homes are genuine marvels of luxury, each comprising over 800 square metres of meticulously designed space, tailored to the refined tastes of its owners.
Imagine, high ceilings that echo the limitless ambitions of its residents, private gardens that bloom in quiet conversations with the Mediterranean sun, and infinity pools that blur the line between man-made luxury and nature’s magnificence.
But let’s move beyond the aesthetics for a moment. Not only does The Gallery set a benchmark for opulent living, but its heartbeat is also its community. There’s an Owner’s Club, boasting everything from a gourmet restaurant
to a cutting-edge gym. And then there’s the spa – a sanctuary of tranquillity with a sauna, Hammam, and bespoke beauty treatments.
“The modern luxury buyer isn’t just looking for a property; they’re seeking an experience, a lifestyle,” comments Smadar Kahana, director for Engel & Völkers Marbella. “They don’t just want four walls and a view; they want a community, a statement, a legacy.”
The Gallery, a beacon of luxury for the world’s elite, counts the illustrious Victoria Swarovski – Austrian entrepreneur, moderator, singer and member of the Swarovski family – as a brand ambassador as well as one of its distinguished residents. Matías Villarroel, director of Roel Homes, notes that Swarovski’s decision to purchase a property in The Gallery exemplifies its unparalleled allure, setting new benchmarks in opulent living.
Location? Prime, of course. Nestled amidst verdant wooded hillsides and framed by majestic mountain ranges, The Gallery stands in Palo Alto, just a few minutes from both Marbella town and its pristine beaches. It’s an oasis close enough to the hustle and bustle but distanced enough to provide peace and privacy.

TRANSFORMING PROPERTIES INTO BESPOKE ENVIRONMENTS
INTERVIEW WITH VICTORIA MOLA – DIRECTOR OF SIESTA DESIGN
Siesta Interior Design is now well established in Marbella’s Centro Plaza. How did you originally start the business?
Building on our background as property developers, we seamlessly transitioned into interior styling. Our focus is on assisting homeowners in transforming their properties into bespoke environments, meticulously curated to deliver the highpoint of lifestyle experiences. Recognising the desires of our clients who buy properties along the Coast, we identified the need to manifest their dream holiday homes even from afar. This awareness gave birth to Siesta Design, the driving force behind passionately crafting and orchestrating interior design and refurbishment projects. We oversee every intricacy, ensuring that each of them materialises flawlessly.
How have you evolved over the many years you have been on the Coast?
When we first started, we were only working with the new owners from Siesta Homes developments. We soon noticed we were being contacted by friends of our clients, or those who had seen our show flats and loved our style. So, we realised we needed to be more visible and we moved into the shop in Centro Plaza.
This was a great move as, from our showroom, we get to meet more clients. When they visit our showroom they explore a variety of styles, colours and shapes. We gather them to establish a connection, understand their requirements, and ensure a perfect alignment between their vision and our expertise.
Tell us more about the services you offer.
We provide comprehensive support to our clients, attending to each and every aspect required to consciously decorate their properties. From furniture and fittings to curtains, new kitchens and even building works, we deliver a wide variety of services. Our commitment covers the entire project execution and, in situations where clients have existing furnishings, we contribute by refining the overall look through meticulous restyling.
Understanding that many of our clients are in their home countries, we embrace the management of their projects and adopt the need for seamless coordination. This involves liaising with multiple suppliers, overseeing deliveries, facility management and all the associated logistical arrangements.
How do you normally approach a project?
We have a first meeting with the clients to talk about the style they like, what kind of needs they have, how they are planning to use the property, if it is for their own use, if they will be renting it out, what budget they have in mind, etc. Sometimes this first meeting happens in person, and other times we do it on video call. We then put together an inspiration moodboard to show the clients and make sure we all agree on the style we are going for. The next

step is preparing the proposal, where we include several options for each area. All the projects are personalised – nothing is fixed. Clients can be more or less involved in the process until we come to the final project. It is up to them. We are happy to have more meetings to go through the proposals, and we are also used to those clients who prefer not to be involved in the process and just want to see the final result.
Marbella is still booming. What is your vision for the upcoming year to take advantage of that?
We believe it will be a great year. Many of our old clients are coming back to us asking to decorate new apartments they have bought as an investment, either to rent out or re-sell. We also have new clients who are buying off-plan, which creates a busy and exciting pipeline for the next 12 months.
In Conclusion…
In our showroom in Centro Plaza we always have a nice variety of distinctive and special furniture and accessories. You can find well-known brands together with some secret ones that we love because of their uniqueness. We blend Scandinavian and Mediterranean design elements to create warm and modern homes with a natural feeling that balances form and function, and above all lifestyle and well-being.

ESTEPONA DEVELOPMENT SETS THE STANDARD FOR QUALITY – AS PHASE TWO IS LAUNCHED
ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY ATLAS GROUP
Costafiore Gardens, the new development positioned in a hillside area on the outskirts of Estepona, has gained recognition for quality and high standards. Dutch developers Compagnie Real Estate Development released phase two of this apartment complex in August, and already the project is in hot demand, due to the success of the initial phase, as well as the design, quality of build and professionalism of the teams involved.
Richard Schul, CEO of the developer group, approached Costafiore looking to replicate the group’s long-standing success in Holland with this project in southern Spain. The Estepona area has undergone impressive modernisation in recent years and, with upgrades in infrastructure and increased demand for the Costa del Sol, Costafiore was a well-timed development of luxury apartments and penthouses.
Phase two of Costafiore Gardens was launched following the success of phase one, and buyers can expect even further improvement in the details for each home. This new phase consists of 27 apartments and five penthouses with a private pool. The two, three and four-bedroom properties maintain the development’s high level of quality and living comfort. As the developer notes, “Costafiore Gardens consciously wants to make the difference in quality; quality in construction, quality in materials, quality in finishing, quality of architecture – in short, quality of life.”
Completion of Phase Two Expected Towards End of 2025
“Phase one of Costafiore Gardens proved that buyers can indeed differentiate on quality,” says Richard Schul. “We are not promoters, but developers involved in every detail of the project. Only with an engaged team that is respectfully open to new insights and opinions will you achieve the highest results.
“With the design of phase two the Compagnie Real Estate Development team wanted to maintain the unique selling points of phase one, and to that end slight adjustments have been made to increase the living comfort and provide even more functionality.
“We are proud to call Atlas Group our partner because, just like us, they work with a team of professionals and strive for quality and excellence in all their projects.”
Phase two was launched in early August, and the inauguration party was held at Costafiore Gardens, welcoming the project partners and real estate professionals who were able to learn more about phase two and hear more about the success of the initial phase.
Speaking on the pending build of phase two and working with Compagnie Real Estate Development, Atlas Group Director General Mike Gregory said the two companies “share the same views on efficiency, value for money, and going the extra mile to make sure the product is delivered on-time and onbudget, and aim to exceed client expectations.
“Our combined drive and determination to create a quality and successful development was a great match and we are excited to break ground on phase two.”

DREAM-LIKE JOURNEY THROUGH
“THE ECHO OF PICASSO” AT MÁLAGA EXHIBITION
Celebrations and special exhibitions have been held around the world this year to mark the 50th anniversary (8 April 1973) of Málaga-born Pablo Picasso’s death. One of the last scheduled for 2023 is “The Echo of Picasso” (“El Eco de Picasso”), which is due to open at the Málaga Picasso Museum on 3 October and continue until 31 March next year.
Announcing details of the exhibition, the museum said, “Pablo Picasso made use of an enormous range of styles while his exceptional influence on 20th century art has lasted into the 21st century. In addition to Cubism, his principal contribution to modern art was the freedom that characterises every aspect of his painting, sculpture and graphic work. There is wide-ranging consensus regarding Picasso’s profound impact on the art world, allowing it to be said that no previous artist attracted followers and admirers on a comparable mass scale, in addition to critics.”
Curated by French art critic and exhibition curator Eric Troncy, the exhibition’s aim is to focus on this effect of Picasso’s artistic practices, as well as on the current globalised art scene, bringing together work by more than 50 artists in dialogue with Picasso. According to Troncy, the exhibition features works that reveal echoes of Picasso’s art, resonances which came about either in “real time” during the artist’s lifetime or in the present day. Rather than attempting to present an exhaustive catalogue – which would, he notes, probably encompass most artists of the last 100 years – this exhibition project proposes “a dream-like journey through the echoes of Pablo Picasso’s remarkable experiments experienced through different periods, styles and generations”.
It covers the work of Willem de Kooning, Jean-Michael Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois and Jeff Koons, among others. “In this sense The Echo of Picasso, which includes a selection of influential works by the artist himself, functions like an echo in an enclosed space, exploring the visual experience of these resonances through exceptional loans of works by artists from the 1920s to the present.”

RIVERSIDE DINING EXPERIENCE ON THE EDGE OF THE ZAMBEZI RIVER
This trip will especially appeal to passionate foodies with a spirited sense of adventure. In a magical setting just four kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls, Palm River Hotel offers guests a fully-immersive “Riverside Dining Experience” in Zimbabwe on the banks of the Zambezi River.
“Under a twinkling canopy of stars,” says the hotel, “and illuminated by lanterns, guests are treated to an authentic barbeque-style dinner, perfectly positioned within the hotel’s lush gardens, alongside the palm-fringed banks of the tranquil and serene river.”
The experience includes a three-course dinner of locally sourced barbecue-style options, enhanced with a touch of traditional Zimbabwean flavours, with delicacies such as crocodile and kudu steaks also found on the menu – all of which are grilled al fresco on open coal fires. “Fresh and flavourful salads, side options and a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages further elevate the experience.”
Light entertainment of gentle rhythms played by local musicians on handheld drums and traditional instruments – known locally as the “mbira” – create a calming ambience, with a background of birdlife and wildlife chatter. As the dinner is set up alongside a wildlife corridor, there are frequent sightings of native animals.
“The magic of the Zambezi River is treasured by all who are fortunate enough to experience it,” says group hospitality manager Heather Kay, “and our hope is for every guest to leave Victoria Falls with a vibrant memory of our wild surroundings and this iconic river. With this in mind, the ‘Riverside Dining Experience’ perfectly encapsulates the enchanting river setting, paired with our most loved Zimbabwean flavours, light entertainment and a soothing ambience under the African night’s sky.”
The “Riverside Dining Experience” takes place between 6pm and 8.30pm and is available to all in-house guests of the Palm River Hotel and Ilala Lodge Hotel throughout the year, weather conditions permitting.
The experience costs US$45 per person and includes a three-course barbecue dinner, a welcome drink, return transfers within Victoria Falls town centre (not applicable to groups) and local entertainment. The experience can also be booked as a group activity available to guests from external hotels.
In addition, the Palm River Hotel offers indoor dining in the hotel’s grand dining hall and on the restaurant terrace – a part-immersed setting within the indigenous surroundings of the hotel. Both options are complemented by the hotel’s sweeping gardens and views of the Zambezi River. The restaurant offers a separate à la carte menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to hotel guests and day visitors.
Officially opened in 2021 by the family-run Palm Hospitality Group, which also operates the more longer established (over 30 years) Ilala Lodge Hotel, the five-star Palm River Hotel comprises 73 river-facing rooms and suites “delivering unparalleled luxury with a sense of home comfort”.

A GASTRONOMIC BEACH CLUB OASIS IN THE DUNES OF MARBELLA
Situated on arguably the Costa del Sol’s most paradisaical stretch of coastline, Dune Beach opened its doors this year to those who seek a more exclusive and tranquil beach experience. Nestled amongst the protected dunes of El Rosario, this stunning beach club – created by the owners of the highly-acclaimed Ocean Club – has all the resounding traits of its sister company in terms of attention to detail, impeccable design and service, but with a different spin.
With so many new beach clubs popping up along the coast, especially to the east of Marbella, it is fair to ask, what makes Dune so special? The simple answer is, the whole package. As you enter you are immediately struck by the organic natural feel of the décor, which has been cleverly curated to blend seamlessly with its surrounding environment. The ubiquitous use of pale wood throughout provides an overwhelming and welcoming sense of tranquillity. Contemporary interior design has morphed away from sharp pointy edges and in recent years gravitated towards smooth lines and shapes, and this is certainly the case with the design of Dune. The venue itself is circu-
lar and this theme can be observed in every aspect of the design. There is an impressive 360-degree interior bar, which is illuminated from above by natural sunlight pouring in from a large round skylight looming above. The lampshades that encircle the bar are wabi-sabi style, also offering a soft organic aesthetic. All of the dining tables are circular, which not only saves space, allowing people to walk more freely around the venue, but also makes for better social interaction when dining. And the curved theme doesn’t stop there, as the arcuated lounge area protected by elegant shade sails stretches around the periphery of the restaurant, and even the sunbeds on the beach have circular headrests.
The menu screams of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences, expertly put together to create delicious, colourful and beautifully presented dishes. Our service was faultless, with a wonderfully attentive waiter who needed no encouragement to suggest dishes that he felt we would enjoy. We embarked on trying their halloumi and watermelon salad, roast eggplant salad, barbecue corn ribs, souvlaki-style barbecue bluefin tuna and Middle Eastern

lavash bread, topped off with their baked yoghurt dessert with an almond and cardamom crunch and fresh berries.
All dishes were fresh and vibrant and full of original flavours that we hadn’t come across in other venues along the coast. For a restaurant of this calibre, the menu is very fairly priced as the portion sizes are generous, the ingredients are of a high quality and the dishes are superbly cooked and originally presented.
When it comes to drinks there is a wide range of wines to choose from, mainly from France, Spain and Italy, as well as an impressive array of Champagnes. Their cocktail list is definitely worth checking out, with a range of innovative signature cocktails to choose from plus all the classics we know and love. In summary, Dune has set out to be “the perfect combination of a beach club and an exclusive gastronomic experience” and it has certainly achieved
its goal. It has managed to master the art of offering luxury in a relaxed and stylish ambience on a beach that has powder-like sand, away from the hustle and bustle of Marbella town. You cannot fail to be impressed by the décor, service and gastronomy, so it is well worth paying them a visit to experience a magical day in the dunes for yourself.

SAVOURING SWEET MOMENTS AT CHURROS & CO
Churros & Co is located in the very heart of San Pedro de Alcántara, close to the Correos office. It is owned by three partners: Alberto and Ana, who also are the proprietors of the popular Barbulla bar and restaurant and Sky Lounge above the NH Hotel in San Pedro; and Paco García, owner of the Michelin-star restaurant El Lago in Elviria.
Together, they opened Churros & Co at the end of last year and it has already become a popular venue to enjoy not only their delicious churros, but also a range of breakfast options, coffee, locally-made ice cream and crêpes. So back to the main star of the show, the churros… the owners made a huge investment to buy the most cutting-edge fryer and, using the words of Alberto himself, it truly is the “Rolls-Royce” of the fryer world. Not just because of the price(!) but how it expertly maintains the oil at the highest quality, ensuring it is always clean and at the optimum temperature for creating perfect churros every time – beautifully crunchy and not greasy.
There are various versions of churros to choose from in their menu: the tradi-
tional sort, straight, slim and long strands of crunchy dough crying out to be dipped in chocolate or one of their other delectable sauces: ones shaped like eclairs with delicious fillings inside; swirl-shaped churros that you can eat on their own like a cookie; and their famous new version, “Churrol NY”, which is a nod to the renowned New York croissant roll. If you are feeling particularly indulgent, opt for two with ice cream in the middle and eat it like a sumptuous sandwich (it’s not for the fainthearted, but it is memorable for the adventurous). The décor inside is clean, contemporary and fun, and the seating area is out on their large terrace, with lots of charming small wooden tables and chairs in front of the hatch where you collect your order. A takeaway service is also a much-requested option for those who simply want to enjoy a sweet treat at home. Their extra-large “Combo” pot of mini-churros is great for groups and has become an especially popular choice for takeaway customers. Churros & Co is situated in Calle Pizarro 30, San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella). Visit their Instagram page: @churrosandco_

BERRIES PACK POWERFUL NUTRITIONAL PUNCH
BY JOHN SCHIESZER
The Mediterranean diet is ranked as one of the most healthy on the planet. The name derives from the geographical region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea (which includes Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Tunisia), where this diet has been adopted for centuries. It incorporates different types of food that are mostly unprocessed and plant-based and are typically found in this area (fruit, vegetables, nuts, grains, legumes and extra virgin olive oil, as well as lean proteins and fish).
Extensive studies have consistently indicated that individuals who follow this diet live longer and have a lower incidence of major chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer’s. However, it may be best to also think about berries. Whether you opt for strawberries, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries or salmonberries, they are wonderful functional foods.
“It’s important to add berries to any diet,” says Sandra J. Arévalo Valencia, director of Community Health & Wellness at Montefiore Nyack Hospital in New York. “Berries are one of those ‘superfoods’ because of the great amount of nutrients they have in them that make the immune system stronger to add protection against infections. They also protect against other diseases due to the vitamin C, dietary fibre and antioxidants.”
In addition, she says, latest research indicates that some components of berries known as flavan-3-ols may be beneficial for heart health and protect against diabetes. Valencia said the best advice is to eat a large variety of berries because, although similar, some berries have different nutritional content. “If we compare blackberries and strawberries, for example, strawberries have more potassium but less fibre. Eating a variety of berries, you get the benefits of all. Even salmonberries are different and necessary because they have more vitamin B6 than their counterparts.”
In addition to being an outstanding source of nutrients, berries can also
benefit the stomach as microbiome-promoting natural fibre and other bioactive plant compounds like anthocyanins. A review of 23 randomised controlled trials found that berry intake is linked with beneficial effects on markers of heart disease risk, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, artery function and blood sugar.
Eating more fruit and vegetables, including berries, seems to protect the brain. Compounds found in berries not only protect the brain from oxidative stress but also counteract other factors linked to Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, studies suggest berries may help protect against the negative effects of a high fat diet and help boost a person’s mood and decrease the risk for developing depression.
Nutritionists recommend you refrigerate unwashed berries in their packages or in a single layer in a spacious container with a loose-fitting, breathable cover. If they begin to over ripen, transfer them to the freezer. They are then ready for smoothies, oatmeal topping, baking or sauces whenever you want them. Frozen berries, which are available year-round, are often less expensive. They tend to be just as tasty and nutritious, and have a long storage life.
If you’re concerned about the high sugar content in most berries, there is no need. Scientists have found that the sugar in berries is contained within the intact structure of the food, greatly slowing the speed of digestion. Other compounds in berries, such as fibre, slow digestion and offset potential harmful effects of the natural sugar.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF SLOW-PACED BREATHING
BY RACHEL GARROD
As a respiratory physiotherapist I have an interest in all things related to breathing, and I was intrigued last month to see some research suggesting that slow breathing can reduce Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) risk. Published in Scientific Reports (March 2023), the study investigated the effect of slow breathing using heart rate variability biofeedback on proteins known to be elevated in AD. Heart rate variability (HRV) is the measure of fluctuations in the time intervals between heartbeats. The time taken between each heartbeat is not regular but varies, with greater fluctuation indicating better health.
In the study 108 healthy adults were assigned to two groups: one where they were taught to lower their breathing rate to five or six breaths per minute using heart rate oscillations as biofeedback; and the other where they were asked to relax or self-meditate. Both groups performed the activity for 20 to 40 minutes daily for seven weeks.
The breathing rate in the slow-paced group was between nine and 13 seconds per breathing cycle, depending on which pattern gave the greatest increases in HRV (this was measured in the lab). The other group were instructed to lower HRV through visualisation or self-meditation practice. Over time the plasma proteins associated with AD were significantly reduced in the group that performed slow-paced breathing and significantly increased in the other group. A lowering of these plasma proteins appears to be related to a lower risk of AD.
Slow-paced breathing – inhalation of six seconds and exhalation of six seconds – has been advocated for hundreds of years in practices such as yoga, Hinduism and Buddhism, and we know that, when doing this, blood circulation in the brain increases as the effort of the heart decreases. Added to these known positive effects, the encouraging results on plasma proteins might be the stimulus we all need to start implementing slow-paced breathing in our daily routines.

HYPER GT PAYS TRIBUTE TO ICONIC FAMILY AND DESIGN HERITAGE
Automobili Pininfarina has launched an exclusive limited-edition version of its electric hyper GT in honour of the first Formula 1 world champion. The Battista Edizione Nino Farina made its world premiere this summer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it was piloted by former F1 driver and hill-climb record-holder Nick Heidfeld in his role as an advisor to Automobili Pininfarina.
The new Battista Edizione was developed as a celebration of the “illustrious racing career and fearless spirit” of Nino Farina. The nephew of company founder Battista “Pinin” Farina, the Italian driving legend drove an Alfa Romeo to win the opening race, at Silverstone, of the inaugural FIA World Championship of Drivers, and he also went on to lift the season-long world championship trophy.
Following the success of the limited-edition Battista Anniversario, the latest model will feature subtle detailing that distinguishes each Edizione Nino Farina with the bespoke aluminium passenger door plate, anodised in black with one of five unique designs. Each car in the new series celebrates one of five milestones in Nino Farina’s career, meaning collectors will own a one-of-akind Italian design masterpiece.
• Nino’s date and place of birth (1906 in Turin)
• First-ever F1 pole position and race victory at the 1950 British Grand Prix
• Second victory in 1950 at the Swiss Grand Prix
• Third and final victory in 1950 at the Italian Grand Prix
• 1950 F1 world championship victory
“The Battista Edizione Nino Farina represents the vision of our talented design team, paying an evocative tribute to an undisputed legend of the Pininfarina family and its heritage,” said Automobili Pininfarina CEO Paolo Dellachà. “An untold story about the spirit and the courage of a man driven by a racing passion like no other.
“Our clients demand rarity, exclusivity, and the quality of execution synonymous with unique and coachbuilt Pininfarina designs of the past. Battista Edizione Nino Farina combines all these elements, with the phenomenal performance of the most powerful car ever made in Italy, the Battista. In our imagination, Nino would have dreamt to drive with his uncle Battista, pushing the car to its limits. As he did every time he raced. Driving this car will be an experience much like pulling on the suit of a superhero. An exceptional and emotional experience is assured.”
Added chief design officer Dave Amantea, “Its signature Rosso Nino body colour has been chosen to evoke memories of the Italian racing red paintwork of the cars in which he enjoyed his greatest victories, while key finishes and design cues sit seamlessly with Battista’s unmistakable design.”
The Battista Edizione Nino Farina’s interior features a bespoke two-tone theme, with the driver’s seat upholstery trimmed in black sustainable luxury leather and the passenger seat in contrasting beige and black Alcantara.
Like the Battista and Battista Anniversario, the Edizione Nino Farina is powered by a state-of-the-art powertrain that delivers record-breaking performance. According to Automobili Pininfarina,

“The world’s first pure-electric hyper GT utilises a high-capacity 120 kWh lithium-ion battery contained within a strong but lightweight carbon fibre housing. Four independent high-performance electric motors – one driving each wheel – combine with Full Torque Vectoring, Electronic Stability Control and a software differential that allows drivers to tailor the power delivery and handling responses like never before, while its T-shaped liquid-cooled battery pack is mounted centrally behind the seats to ensure a low centre of gravity.” The Battista’s launch control technology means the car can achieve zero
to 100 km/h in 1.86 seconds and zero to 200 km/h in 4.75 seconds. “A car as fast as Battista demands strong stopping power and official tests confirm Battista is the fastest braking EV in the world, completing 100 to zero km/h in 31 metres.”
The Battista combines hypercar performance with the cruising range and luxurious cabin of a traditional GT, with all-wheel drive and a choice of five driving modes to tailor the driving dynamics: Calma, Pura, Energica, Furiosa and Carattere.

VALDERRAMA HOSTS FIRST LIV GOLF EVENT IN CONTINENTAL EUROPE
The LIV Golf revolution came to the Costa del Sol this summer, when Royal Valderrama Club hosted the first continental European leg of the new global tour. Highlighted by an innovative format – 54 holes instead of 72, shotgun starts for all the players, and speakers around the course blaring out music and tournament updates by DJs – as well as celebrity pro-am golfers, special leisure activities for children and live music concerts – the LIV Golf Andalucía event gave local fans the chance to see first-hand how the traditional golfing world has undergone a major upheaval over the past year. Many of the world’s top golfers – including Grand Slam champions Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Sergio García, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau – teed up at a course recognised for many years as the finest in Europe. In the end, however, it was one of the LIV Golf League’s lesser-heralded stars who prevailed. American Talor Gooch, already twice a winner
this season, made it three at Valderrama, while Torque GC (captain Joaquin Niemann, David Puig, Sebastian Muñoz and Mito Pereira) won the team prize. Forty-eight players in 12 teams competed for a prize fund of $25 million at Valderrama, including €4 million for the individual champion and $3 million shared among the four winning team members, with significant additional amounts also being donated to local charities.

HOLIDAY HOMES IN ANDALUCÍA
ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS
Our geography in Spain offers one of the best destinations for sun-seeking travellers, among others, so it is not surprising that many see the south of Spain as an opportunity to start their own tourist accommodation business. In order to assist you in the process of setting up your holiday rental in Andalucía, we have put together this short guide explaining the differences between tourist apartments (“apartamentos turísticos”) and homes (“viviendas con fines turísticos”) in Andalucía.
According to the regional legislation, there are different types of tourist accommodation depending on their uses and characteristics.
Tourist Apartments
The Junta de Andalucía (regional government) defines the concept of a tourist apartment in Decree 194/2010 as a “set of accommodation units… intended to provide tourist accommodation services, which have adequate furniture and facilities for the conservation, preparation and consumption of food and beverages, and which are subject to exploitation in common by the same owner”.
Tourist apartments are considered to be accommodation establishments that can provide tourist services complementary to accommodation.
Homes for Tourist Purposes
In Decree 28/2016 tourist homes are defined as “properties located on land for residential use, in which an accommodation service is offered for a price, on a regular basis and for tourist purposes”.
Homes for tourist purposes, according to the regulation, are advertised through tourist channels such as national rental platforms, tourist service companies and travel agencies.
The number of places is limited to 15 if the home is rented as a whole, or six if rented by room, and in no case may there be more than four beds per room, with a maximum rental contract period of 60 days.
The regulations comprise a wide range of laws, the main one being Andalucian Tourism Law 13/2011, which regulates all tourist activities in the region. There you can check in detail the requirements that must be met in terms of equipment, accreditation of ownership, occupancy licence, complaint forms, etc.
How is Income Taxed in Spain?
For non-resident taxpayers renting a property for tourist purposes, the income is taxed as being rental from real estate assets. If the owner of the property is resident in another member state of the European Union, in Iceland or in Norway, they will be taxed at a reduced rate of 19 per cent on the income obtained and will be able to deduct expenses incurred in connection with the rental. If they are from outside the EU (and Iceland and Norway), they will be taxed at 24 per cent, and not be able to claim deductions.
If the accommodation is a tourist apartment, the income obtained will have to be declared as deriving from economic activities.
As a taxpayer in Spain, you will be obliged to file a quarterly tax return (form 210) for the income you receive every quarter and an annual tax return.
If you rent a property for tourist purposes in Andalucía during the summer months, you cannot deduct expenses for the whole year. They must be prorated based on the months the property has been rented.
