EDITOR’S NOTE 12
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2022
Just about everyone loves summers on the Costa del Sol. Sure, there are downsides, like this year’s extended heatwave, but summers are an opportunity to take time off to recharge our batteries – even if it’s just the occasional long weekend for those still working – and to enjoy more quality time with family and friends. Nevertheless, there is always almost a sense of relief when autumn begins, especially if our homes require a makeover or revamp. Summers are not exactly the best time to be indulging in strenuous physical activity, not only because of the heat but also as we’d much rather be nestling a glass of chilled wine around the pool or at a beachside chiringuito than wielding a drill or paintbrush. Now, as the days become cooler and our enthusiasm for resuming work around the home is re-energised, we can finally address those maintenance and redecoration issues that have remained on the back-burner throughout July and August. In many cases, spending longer periods at home over summer – both relaxing with family and entertaining friends – will have exposed some areas that warrant our urgent attention. Upgrading well-worn pieces of furniture or furnishings, for example, or re-organising key spaces in the home that haven’t adequately fulfilled their purpose… So where to start? Fortunately, another eagerly anticipated aspect of autumn, and in particular September, is that the international calendar of décor and design fairs is back in full flow. First off the rank is the second annual edition of Maison & Objet in Paris (8-12 September), whose theme, “Meta Sensible”, aims to highlight how we can maintain a balance between the tactile artisanship of the “real world” and digital living. Intergift in Madrid (14-18 September) will showcase the Spanish decoration and gift sector, while the London Design Festival (17-25 September) celebrates the city as a global landmark of design. In Spain, the Feria Hábitat de Valencia (20-23 September) coincides this year with a comprehensive calendar of events and initiatives marking World Design Capital València 2022. Then it’s back to the Costa del Sol, with Design Week Marbella (22-28 September), a festival of design, architecture and interior décor. At the time Home & Lifestyle Magazine was going to press, the spotlight was on Finland, where Design Helsinki highlighted the city’s functional and minimalistic Nordic architecture. In fact, Helsinki has the largest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in northern Europe, one reason why it is a must-visit for architecture aficionados. Industry professionals from many of the companies showcasing their brands and services in this September-October edition are inveterate visitors to these premier annual exhibitions, with the objective of staying abreast of latest trends and updating their showroom collections. We highly recommend you pay them a visit this autumn to discover first-hand, from the experts, how you can revitalise your home ambience and lifestyle. Home & Lifestyle Magazine

A LIGHT BULB MOMENT The world of lighting is, to say the least (and pardon the pun), an illuminating one. Collections are becoming so rapidly advanced in technology, design and versatility that there are endless options to cater for any lighting requirement, whether it is for decorative or functional purposes. When considering lighting solutions for your home, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Choosing specific fixtures for the job in hand may mean a number of different lamps for one room to make the space feel welcoming. The way that the room is used is especially relevant, together with the lamp’s size and design style. There are three types of lighting to consider when entering into this field: task, accent and ambient lighting. Task lighting is customarily a lamp that offers direct lighting such as for reading, cabinet or mirror lighting, while accent lighting highlights certain features such as a painting, shrubbery or fountain. Ambient lighting adds soft illumination, making the living space cosy, but it is not necessarily ideal for reading. In conclusion, buy lamps that work for your way of living, and have fun shopping around as there are some fabulous options available.

OUTDOOR LIVING ...
THE GLORIOUS OUTDOORS When living in southern Spain, our outdoor spaces are just as important as our indoor areas. Lounge furniture, shade and dining areas are the staple for any outdoor area, and getting it all right is sometimes challenging as harsh weather conditions can take their toll on furniture and finishings. Therefore, investing in good-quality products is worth its weight in gold. Enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds us is good for the soul and reminds us why we live in this beautiful part of the world, so consider wisely when it comes to your outdoor living space – and you will be able to enjoy it in the best way possible.

BACK TO WORK Now the summer is behind us, it’s “back to work we go!”. With so many of us now working from home following the pandemic, the home office has become an important installation, and for some people a new feature that they previously hadn’t thought of including. Whether you dedicate an entire room for an office or simply allocate a small area in a living room or spare bedroom, needless to say it is important to get it right and ensure the ergonomics are at their optimum. Comfortable adjustable seating, a desk that offers convenient storage for organisational purposes and a good light source are certainly the main considerations when designing your workspace. The area doesn’t have to be boring and sterile: inject some personality and warmth with plants, table accessories or a rug for something soft underfoot, and consider hanging a painting or even a mood board to help inspire you.

LIVING ROOMS ...
LIVING ROOM INSPIRATION Now we are into the autumn months, many of us will be retreating to our living rooms, instead of the outdoor spaces, to while away the evenings – and even more so as we get closer to winter. It is at this time of the year when we focus on and start to make a few tweaks to this key living area of the home. From entertaining to some self-indulgent movie watching, this room needs to be inviting, comfortable and practical. Adding personality and your own artistic flair is essential, with layout and functionality being equally as important. Textiles such as rugs, cushions and curtains are a great way to add cosiness and a splash of creative expression. Choosing suitable seating solutions that fit the space is a good place to start. Invest wisely in a good sofa and armchairs and they should last you for years. Pouffes not only serve as footstools but they are also great for adding extra seating when unexpected guests come by, and depending on their shape they can also make handy side tables. Ensure you have adequate resting areas for drinks, table lamps and electronic devices so that everyone is seated comfortably and there is no need to get up every time they need to place something on a table. Keeping clutter to a minimum provides a calming feel to theroom and take advantage of natural entrance ways and windows with heavy furniture is obviously a no-no. So ensure there is plenty of space for people to walk around the room and allow natural sunlight where possible, to maintain the room airy and light during the day. Here are some ideas to inspire you…

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF RUGS The great thing about rugs is that they are so portable, and therefore so versatile. They are excellent sound-absorbers, so for apartments they are particularly practical if there are residents below. Also, if you have a very large room, they reduce echo and add warmth. If you have hard floors such as stone or marble, a rug can anchor the furniture (as well as protect the floor and stop items from screeching when dragged). If there are neutral tones throughout the room, a statement rug can be an easy way to introduce colour as a focal point, elevating the room’s design. If the room feels a little sterile, rugs with some texture will immediately add warmth and a welcoming note. Rugs are often overlooked but they can be quite transformational, so consider carefully how they are going to be used in a specific area… if it is one that will endure a lot of foot-fall, a hard-wearing rug is well worth investing in. Here are some gorgeous ideas to warmup your floors with a rug this autumn.

Emma Surgenor, director of Space & Grace, is a talented lady with a huge portfolio of outstanding projects under her belt. Though she introduces herself as a builder, her artistic flair for interior design has wowed her clients to an exceptional extent. Emma has made a name for herself with numerous innovative projects in residences at the prestigious Puente Romano resort, but she has also taken on projects all over the Coast – and even across the waters. So we have to ask: how has she managed to achieve such success? Well, the answer is simple. Her decades of experience within the industry, an unrelenting drive for perfection and a calm and positive attitude has been a winning combination, putting her clients at ease knowing that she has everything under control. After she has finished a job, her responsibilities do not stop there. She always guarantees that, if any issues arise afterwards, she is on hand to iron out ongoing matters so that the client has the peace of mind of knowing they are completely looked after. Emma’s technical background and subsequent expert knowledge within the building industry has given her a significant edge. Her (not so) little black 106

book of contacts means she has artisans, construction teams and suppliers at the ready, so she can coordinate an entire project single-handedly without any hesitation – and she isn’t fazed by rolling up her sleeves herself. Many of her projects incorporate custom-made furniture to ensure that each piece fits the space the best way possible, making every job she takes on as personal to that home as possible. A Brit through and through, Emma has lived on the Coast for many years and her elegantly demure manner is charming. However, you soon realise when she starts talking about her work that she is a serious professional and, underneath a petite frame, she is a strong-minded and absolutely dedicated lady who will do whatever it takes to ensure her work is carried out in the best way possible – and her results are testament to this. With clients from far and wide across the globe, she can adapt her style to the most discerning homeowner. If you would like to meet Emma for a chat about a project, no matter how big or small, you can contact her at emma@spaceandgrace.net or call her on (+34) 711 718 404. BRINGING A WORLD OF ART AND DESIGN TO SOTOGRANDE INTERVIEW WITH JESSICA DARCH OWNER AND ARTIST – DARCH&CO
What is the concept behind Darch&Co? We blend visual and graphic arts with innovative interior design, delivering custom-made solutions from exclusive brands to create exquisite homes. Our gallery hosts impressive displays by prominent local artists, showcasing contemporary works. At Darch&Co, we are art aficionados. When art is born out of passion and expertly produced, it begs to be seen. Our design and art space draws local artisans and artists together, to deliver stunning projects. With plenty of time for contemplation during the pandemic, we realised there was high demand for a bespoke service and, with this in mind, we decided to pool our skills and set up a design studio in the Sotomarket shopping mall. It was launched last year with a striking exhibition by photographer Alexis De Villar. What services are offered by your team? The Darch&Co team is made up of experts in complementary fields, each responsible for an area of work from concept and design to planning and execution. We seek to understand a client’s taste and budgetary requirements, then guide them through the design process, to achieve their vision of a forever home. Our studio displays a range of national and international brands, together with tailor-made furniture and original decorative pieces. A legion of craftsmen are at hand to create cabinetry, upholstery, wallpaper and spectacular murals. An exciting program of exhibitions brings fresh ideas, including one recent display by sculptor David Marshall and another by colour pop portrait painter Gill Welland. Our latest show (which ran until the end of August) featured resin art embedded with quartz and crystals by Jilly Law. These pieces bring a sparkle to any wall. Working with our sister company Property Specialists Group and supported by contractors who are well-known for the quality of their workmanship, we 122

help clients purchase a new home, communicate their desires, then relocate to their completed abode. This is a true turn key solution and very much a hand-holding process from property search through to completion of the project. At Darch&Co we understand personal service and how to deliver the unique. From the traditional to latest trends, we search for originality and, of course, a quality finish with superb attention to detail. How would you define your own artistic style? My work is eclectic, be it watercolours, on plexiglass or canvas. My forte is murals, sometimes on a huge scale and often at a considerable height! My distinctive style is stamped on each individual project. I liaise with the designers to meet a client’s specifications, then approach each job as a new challenge – thoroughly enjoying bringing it to fruition. I can combine or contrast the existing décor, paint to complement a feature, or adapt a mural to suit a space. Be it transforming a staff room into a jungle or painting a giant octopus, I like to think that my scope is limitless. My 30 years of experience, together with my architectural studies, give me insight into the industry and the ability to undertake any task. I am currently working on a collection for an exhibition at the studio in December. In Conclusion… Building on an extensive network and the experience of working in Sotogrande, opening a design and art studio in Sotomarket has proved to be a wise choice and an ideal location. If you have a creative project, we invite you to visit our showroom to bring it to reality. Darch&Co. CC Sotomarket, Oficina 26-27 Tel. (+34) 616 771 905 www.darchandco.com

DINING IN ...
DINING AT HOME Dining at home should be an experience where wonderful memories are forged, chatting with other members of the household and visiting guests, and enjoying homemade cuisine in a comfortable ambience. Open plan kitchens with dining areas have become hugely popular in recent years, and there are many advantages to this layout – an obvious benefit being that it is more social. Having a separate dining area can cut-off the “chef” from the action and the conversations of others who are about to dine, including children (if you need to keep an eye on them), while you are slaving away concocting your gastronomic delicacies. Open kitchen/dining areas make the room feel airy and lighter, rather than an enclosed dining area surrounded by walls. However, enclosed dining areas do have their benefits too, as they hide the sounds and smells of the kitchen (and any catastrophes you may suffer whilst cooking!), so it all depends on your way of living. Ensuring that your dining table and chairs cater for the usual number of diners you entertain is obviously a default position. Extendable dining tables are a great investment and ideal for space-saving, as well as benches, as you can always squeeze one more onto the table when push comes to shove. A table made from a durable material such as hardwood or with a stone or thick glass top will stand the test of time but it can represent a large investment – albeit a wise one. Mixing and matching dining chairs adds a playful look, making the overall aesthetic of your dining area more casual. Also, when unexpected guests come over, the extra chairs won’t look out of place. Have fun and choose wisely when considering redesigning this area of your home, and bon appétit!

KING OF THE KITCHEN Kitchen trends have leaned towards natural materials in recent years, with stone and wood featuring prominently in modern kitchen design. Both materials offer the durability that is needed in a kitchen as well as an organic aesthetic with unique character. Technology in the kitchen is moving at great speed, with gadgetry that makes cooking a veritable dream. When designing your kitchen, consulting with an expert is highly-recommended as creating a kitchen that works for your particular requirements and space can be quite an undertaking, especially with so many options now available. Here is some inspiration…

The Lapitec Chef is a state-of-the-art induction cooking system, completely hidden under the sintered stone countertop which activates a patented Cooking Mat. When it is not on, only the small screens and touch controls are visible, freeing the hob of any obstacles, maintaining essential aesthetics and ensuring it is easy to cl ean. The four-burner induction unit has been seamlessly integrated under the Lapitec worktop. By placing a specific silicone Cooking Mat on the plate, some magnetic sensors activate the touch controls and allow the system to be turned on. This means that, without this specific mat, the induction hob and corresponding controls are not active and are completely safe, both to facilitate cleaning operations and to be able to use the work surface for other tasks such as food preparation. It also has child-lock control. Each Lapitec Chef Cooking Mat is washable in the dishwasher, covers a cooking zone that is equivalent to two burners and can be used separately when necessary. Lapitec has the appearance of natural stone but with much higher performance, resisting high temperatures, scratches and stains as it is non-porous – which also makes it more hygienic. CREATING YOUR DREAM BEDROOM The sacred bedroom… where we rest and recharge our batteries, setting us up for the day ahead. This is a hugely important area of the home and, as a result, its design requires careful consideration. Choosing a bed that perfectly suits your body needs is a gamechanger. A good-quality bed can often be a significant investment, but it will also be life-changing as well as long-lasting. Embracing minimalism in your bedroom will put your mind into a calmer state but this doesn’t mean that you can’t add your own personality. Having good storage systems keeps the room orderly and your surfaces clear, but adding some accessories, artwork, a reading area and throes to make the space cosy and welcoming helps create a relaxing ambience for you to feel comfortable. Good-quality bed linen not only provides a luxurious look but also allows your skin to breathe so you can sleep more soundly. Here are some ideas for when you decide to redesign your bedroom…

YOUR SPA-LIKE BATHROOM The trend for a spa-like bathroom is relentless – and understandably so. The demand for natural smooth surfaces in the bathroom, such as large slabs of stone and light-oak cabinetry, has soared in recent years, adding a visually serene, organic and harmonious feel. Keeping the room as open as possible gives the sense of space, enabling your mind to relax and enjoy the area around you. The trend for wet rooms fits well into this concept, thanks to the openness and minimalist design they offer, unlike traditional showers which are enclosed areas that you step into. Good storage solutions maintain the room tidy and organised, and simple touches such as adding shelving, countertop trays or baskets are an easy and economical way to keep the room in order. Turning your bathroom into a sanctuary, rather than leaving it a functional room, will not only add value to your home but also enhance your wellbeing.

VILLA NAYA
ELEGANT BOUTIQUE RESORT IN EXOTIC BALI
The adventure began with a deep love for Bali that was triggered in 2017 during their first visit to the Indonesian island resort. “We stepped into a world of amazing design and wonderful classic Balinese architecture,” recall Johan and Gitte Hellke, owners of Escandi Design on the Costa del Sol. “So one part of our trip was always focused on the furniture and design but in the back of our minds we always had the idea of having something of our own in Bali.” Now that dream has been realised with the launch of Villa Naya, a luxurious boutique resort for intrepid holidaymakers seeking an exotic getaway with a cutting-edge touch of sophistication. The exclusive holiday complex comprises two master bungalows with their own living room and bedroom, and four single bungalows, with king-size beds and the comforts of a first-class hotel room. All bungalows have their own bathroom with artisan bathtubs in either stone or terrazzo, as well as a private breakfast terrace. Villa Naya extends over 2,500 square metres of well-maintained gardens, with two large pool areas and custom-made sunbeds. A covered veranda is ideal for dinner gatherings or for lounging and chilling-out, and in-house staff are on hand all day to serve cold drinks and light snacks. Johan picks up the story… “After several trips to Bali we fell more and more in love with the island and its people. We became close to so many amazing 172

people, and started to feel a real connection. And that is when we realised we needed something in Bali we could call home. “Months passed and suddenly a friend called and said he had a house, or more like a mini resort, that his uncle owned and which had been abandoned. Shortly after, we received the first video – just a jungle with some evidence of a few small buildings, in the middle of two vast rice fields on the other side of the world. Any normal person would have run in the other direction but in my mind it was settled. To my surprise, my wife saw what I saw: a hidden gem.” Six months later, after lots of hard and loving work by a local team, Villa Naya (named after their daughter) was ready – a mix of cool Scandinavian style, tropical Balinese architecture and even some Hawaiian touches. The villa resort also showcases furniture and decoration from Escandi Design. “Our idea has always been to use Villa Naya as a hub for creating new collections and finding inspiration, while also renting it out to anyone who would like an extraordinary holiday in the island of gods. “The villa has six staff who will do everything for you. An amazing breakfast in the morning, a cappuccino to die for, or a mouth-watering drink by one of the pools… We have created our oasis and we would like to share that with you.” www.villanaya.es / www.escandidesign.com

T H E M E TAV E RS E A N D D E S I G N B R A N DS BY DAVID MILLON The metaverse is the new ecosystem of business and digital presence in which communication, product marketing and advertising offer more immersive and enriched experiences. One of the main attractions of web 3.0 is its potential as a sales and distribution channel, which helps to increase brand visibility and awareness and to obtain more accurate and relevant data. From these activities, the metaverse has already formed its own new economy: in 2021 alone, more than $41 billion in NFT sales were generated. Following this, the forecasts for 2024 are promising: it is estimated that it will exceed $800 billion, of which $100 million will come from the luxury sector exclusively. Seventy per cent of brands are expected to be present in the metaverse in the next three years. Regarding NFTs, these are digital and unique goods that have established a method to convey exclusivity and brand essence. Cryptoart is a new way of collecting art that, thanks to blockchain technology, allows interior designers, designers and brands to exhibit and sell their work on marketplaces in real time. By holding copyright, artists will also receive royalties from secondary sales of their NFTs. Just as there is only one Da Vinci Gioconda, each NFT is a singular element in itself. And, although it can be copied, the owner has a certificate of authenticity that grants them the rights of acquisition. NFTs manage to transfer the authenticity of the analog world to the digital world. This is a great opportunity to commercialise the design. The metaverse blurs physical limitations and allows you to create custom digital products and designs that can, in turn, be a source of inspiration for physical designs. This aspect is closely linked to the concept of Phygital, which refers to the idea of transforming the digital into the physical, and which presents new business opportunities for brands in the architecture, home interiors and design products spheres. NFT goods open up possibilities for the design sector through personalisation, since the blockchain system allows the uniqueness of pieces to be certified, ensuring the exclusivity of each piece of furniture or virtual design.
We are talking, therefore, about authentic limited units, and even about new business opportunities that will be able to monetise renders and prototypes such as NFTs and take them to the industry for manufacturing and marketing.

Dubbed the “New Golden Mile”, the area has already welcomed a new public hospital and various infrastructure upgrades, including the addition of updated stretches to the coastal walkway, improved parking facilities and the creation of green areas, allowing Estepona to remain the perfect destination for second home buyers. Now, as Spain continues to welcome overseas investment, local construction giant Atlas Group has joined with another European developer to create new homes on the Costa del Sol. NEW HOTEL IN THE ICONIC HEART OF MÁLAGA CITY VINCCI LARIOS DIEZ
180
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2022
The Vincci hotel chain has opened its fifth establishment in Málaga province, in a refurbished 19th century building in one of the capital city’s landmark streets. Vincci Larios Diez is located at number 10 Calle Larios in the former Gómez Raggio department store. Guests are able to enjoy the full experience of Málaga’s venerable traditions, culture and gastronomy, as the four-star hotel is within walking distance of such iconic sites as the cathedral, Roman theatre and Alcazaba, as well as the Picasso Málaga and Carmen Thyssen Málaga Museums and La Malagueta beach. Vincci Larios Diez forms part of the hotel chain’s commitment to converting classic architectural buildings that have fallen into disuse, giving them a new life and reintegrating them into their current surroundings. Dating to 1821, the building housed the Gómez Raggio store throughout the 20th century. Work to restore the original façade on the first floor was carried out by architect Ignacio Ruiz Rivas, whose design also incorporates a covered interior patio that preserves the building’s essence. In conceptualising the overall design and interior décor project, the Plan Group (a founder partner of IHP) took two key factors into account: the prop-
erty’s location and the area’s natural light. These had a direct influence in the design of the communal areas and rooms, to create an elegant, harmonious and welcoming aesthetic. The contemporary refurbishment is also highlighted by the use of such high-quality materials as marble, brass-plated metals and wood. Extending over 3,500 square metres on seven floors, the hotel comprises 76 rooms, all spacious (from 22 square metres), with 10 including a terrace (some with views of the cathedral) and two exclusive top-floor rooms equipped with a terrace and hydromassage. The sixth floor houses a restaurant with a terrace, “El Taller de Larios 10”, which offers non-stop service from buffet and à la carte breakfasts to lunch and evening meals combining classic cuisine with latest culinary trends. The other four Vincci hotels on the Costa del Sol are: Vincci Selección Posada del Patio and Vincci Málaga (both also in Málaga city), Vincci Selección Estrella del Mar and its Estrella del Mar beach club (Marbella), and Vincci Selección Aleysa (Benalmádena). www.vinccihoteles.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES 2022

A GUIDE TO WINE TASTING BY CASSIE M @WINEPOSTER
Have you ever been in a situation where someone who professes to know a lot about wine suddenly stands up by the dinner table, elegantly swirls their glass, takes a sniff and over-shares everything from the fruity aromas, structure of the specific tannins and ageing possibilities to the name of the specific vineyard? Should you also consider taking your wine analysing skills to the next level? To understand what your friend is babbling about, yes probably, but also to have a greater appreciation of what kind of wine you like yourself. Describing your likes and dislikes to a wine vendor helps a lot when you don’t want to spend money on a wine from the shelf that you perhaps won’t enjoy later. Any professional vendor will gladly help you with your purchase so you can obtain the best value. Here is an easy guide to how you can become more skilled at wine tasting… Start by fetching a pen and paper to take notes. Pour some wine in a glass, not too much as you would like to swirl the glass without potentially spilling any of it. Then sniff the wine before the first swirl. What can you smell at this point? First, you want to check for any faults – aromas that you don’t want in your wine. It’s not all that common but this could include wet cardboard or mould indicating that a bacteria called Trichloroanisole (“TCA”) has found its way into your bottle via the cork or maybe through a contaminated barrel. This is what we call a “corked” wine. A common mistake people make is saying a wine is corked when there are bits of the actual cork in the poured wine glass. Next step… swirl. Give the wine some air and let it breath, and more aromas will be released, making it easier for you to sense them. Then analyse and concentrate, and think deeply about what you really are actually smelling. Let’s take red wine as an example. Possible fruit suggestions: raspberry, strawberry, cherry, plum, blackberry, etc. If the wine is aged well you might also note dried fruits such as figs, prune or raisins. 184
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2022
If it is barrel-aged (in wood) you might also pick up some vanilla, oak, smoke, cedar or even coconut, depending on the style of barrel used. From the wine’s ageing you could also note aromas such as dried fruits, leather, earth, tar, tobacco, farmyard or wet leaves. Now, finally the tasting. Take a sip and swish it around in your mouth, hitting the whole part of your tongue and mouth. Five seconds is ideal. Swallow or spit – your choice. – but don’t forget to analyse while the wine is in your mouth. See if you can find the same notes from your palate (tasting) as from your nose (smelling). You might note that the taste and smell vary as the wine changes temperature, and also after swirling. Great – the more aromas you find, the more complex the wine is. Search for other elements in the wine, such as sugar/dryness, acidity, tannins and alcohol. Analyse, swirl and taste again. Repeat these steps on a regular basis and you will find it quite fun as you develop your wine tasting skills quickly. And who knows: the next time someone launches into their wine tasting lingo at a party, you will be able to know what they are talking about. Wine tasting and analysing wines is the perfect way to get to know someone on a date, after work, or as a relaxing and fun group activity. I host several different events that include teaching, blind tasting and guidance through the steps mentioned above, so you will be an ace at this in no time.

NOVOCUADRO ART COMPANY SHOWCASES THE BEAUTY OF SIMPLICITY IN MILAN
Bottom Left: During a visit to the exhibition, renowned interior designer Patricia Urquiola (featured here in the green shirt) chatted with Novocuadro artist Jaime Jurado. A special exhibition entitled “Mediterranean Essence” was presented by Novocuadro Art Company in conjunction with this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan. On show at the new headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in Milan city centre, the collection consisted of a compilation of six original artworks by Jaime Jurado. It was organised by ICEX and curated by the design magazine Elle Decor Italia in collaboration with the DWA Design Studio (Alberto Artesani and Frederik De Wachter). According to Novocuadro, the exhibition was created to define the beauty of simplicity. “It is pristine and innovative, a collection that focuses on the essence of visual well-being, dominated by rich and delicate textures and where pure lines are mixed with curved and organic shapes. We selected and curated these unique forms for their ability to simplify and provide serenity and balance to each room. “Following the guidelines of minimalism that emerged in the 1960s in the United States, in this selection of original artworks, the repetition of geometric shapes can be observed at work in its harmonious ability, striving to achieve an elegant and clean space without overloading it. In this case, the artist
Jaime Jurado uses greys, whites and blacks as protagonists upon a neutral chromatic base, in order to get to the central vision of his art.” Novocuadro Art Company is a turn of the century business originally founded in Spain and dedicated to the international distribution of original artworks. The company supplies specialised art and site-specific decoration to department stores, architects, designers and interior designers on a global scale. “We constantly endeavour to be up to date on the latest trends. Our artworks are always handmade, with a particular aim to create different styles for unique environments and turning each corner into a celebration of colour and space.” Novocuadro Art Company Ctra. de Mijas, 22, Edif. EGGS PACK IMPORTANT HEALTH NUTRIENTS
GRAB YOUR DANCING SHOES AND GET YOUR GROOVE ON
Researchers are reporting that moderate egg consumption can increase the amount of heart-healthy metabolites in the blood, and eating up to one egg per day may help lower the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Eggs are a rich source of dietary cholesterol, but they also contain a variety of essential nutrients. There is conflicting evidence as to whether egg consumption is beneficial or harmful to heart health. A 2018 study published in the journal Heart, which included approximately half a million adults in China, found that those who ate eggs daily (about one egg per day) had a substantially lower risk of heart disease and stroke than those who ate eggs less frequently. Now, researchers have carried out a population-based study exploring how egg consumption affects markers of cardiovascular health in the blood. “Few studies have looked at the role that plasma cholesterol metabolism plays in the association between egg consumption and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, so we wanted to help address this gap,” said first author Lang Pan, with the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at Peking University in Beijing. Pan and the team selected 4,778 participants from the China Kadoorie Biobank, of whom 3,401 had cardiovascular disease and 1,377 did not. They used a technique called targeted nuclear magnetic resonance to measure 225 metabolites in plasma samples taken from the participants’ blood. Of these metabolites, they identified 24 that were associated with self-reported levels of egg consumption. Their analyses showed that individuals who ate a moderate amount of eggs had higher levels of a protein in their blood called apolipoprotein A, which is a building-block of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as “good cholesterol”. These individuals especially had more large HDL molecules in their blood, which help clear cholesterol from the blood vessels and thereby protect against blockages that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
Researchers from Japan have recently reported that dancing doesn’t just feel good, it also enhances brain function. In a study published in Scientific Reports, researchers from the University of Tsukuba found that music with a groove, known as groove music, can significantly increase measures of executive function and associated brain activity in adults who are familiar with the music. Music that elicits the sensation of groove can provide feelings of pleasure and enhance behavioural arousal levels. Exercise, which has similar positive effects, is known to enhance executive function. Accordingly, this may also be an effect of listening to groove music. However, no studies have examined the effect of groove music on executive function or brain activity in regions associated with executive function, which the researchers at University of Tsukuba aimed to address. “We conducted brain imaging to evaluate corresponding changes in executive function, and measured individual psychological responses to groove music,” said lead author ofthe study Hideaki Soya, who is with the health and sport sciences department at the University of Tsukub in Japan. The researchers performed functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to examine executive function before and after listening to music. They also conducted a survey about the subjective experience of listening to groove music. “The results were surprising,” said Soya. They found that groove rhythm enhanced executive function and activity in the brain only in participants who reported that the music elicited a strong groove sensation and the sensation of being clear-headed.

W E I G H T LOSS D O E S E X E RCIS E H E L P? BY RACHEL GARROD We all know the mantra – calories in, calories out. And of course, if weight loss is our goal, we need to expend more energy (calories out) than we put in (calories in), so exercise must be beneficial. Right? To a certain extent yes – exercise plays a role in the weight loss game – but a relatively minor one. Burning calories at the gym, or whatever your chosen mode, is pretty time-intensive and inefficient. For instance, 30 minutes of easy jogging will burn around 230 calories for a 90-kilogram person, and the heavier a person the more calories they burn. Unfortunately, burning calories may make us hungrier and we simply eat more to compensate. For most people weight loss is achieved via 80 per cent dietary changes and around 20 per cent exercise. However, there are a few hacks we can do that will help enhance the benefits of exercise as an aid to weight loss. Firstly, it is important that we consume enough protein. Protein is needed to help build muscle and it satisfies our hunger for longer. There is a myth that for optimal uptake and utilisation of consumed protein we need to eat it immediately post exercise. That’s not quite true although it is fair to say there is a window of opportunity. Consuming protein up to 48 hours post workout enhances its absorption, with the most effective period being in the first hour or so post training. We usually recommend around 20 grams of protein post workout, so that might be an egg and a glass of milk (all types of milk are good sources of protein). Of course, our bodies burn energy all day and most of that energy is spent just keeping us alive and conscious. This energy expenditure is known as
the resting basal metabolic rate (BMR) and one great thing about having stronger muscles is that it significantly increases the BMR. This means that, even when we are relaxing, we are burning more energy than with weaker muscles. Strength training is an important component of weight loss as muscles burn more energy than any other type of tissue. Another useful hack is to exercise in a fasting state if you can, so exercise before breakfast not afterwards. When we exercise without food we burn more fat than if we exercise after a meal. The intensity of your workout might be a little impaired if fasting but for most people that additional fat-burning effect outweighs the impaired performance. It is a good idea to mix it up: a couple of sessions a week in the fasting state and perhaps a harder longer session with food onboard. So, exercise is an important component in weight loss but only if you do it right. And for most of us the advantage of exercise is that it means you can indulge a little more than you might without exercise. But don´t go mad and lose all the benefits!

I N H E R I TA N CE I N S PA I N E X E CU TO R A N D ACCO U N TA N T PA RT I D O R ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS
In this article we talk about inheritance in Spain and the figures of “executor” and “accountant partidor”, highlighting the functions entrusted to them in the Spanish Civil Code after a person’s death. The executor is the person appointed by the deceased in their will to carry out its provisions and therefore execute their last will. It is important not to confuse this figure with the administrator of the estate. The position is voluntary and the executor can accept or decline their appointment. They are not permitted to delegate the position to another person, it is temporary, and it cannot be exercised by minors. It is not a paid position, but the testator can establish remuneration if they so wish. A testator in Spain may establish in their will all the powers they deem appropriate for its fulfilment. These are listed in article 902 of the Civil Code: · To arrange and pay for suffrages and the funeral in accordance with the provisions of the will or, failing that, according to local custom. · To satisfy legacies consisting of cash, with the knowledge and approval of the heir. · To watch over the execution of everything else ordered in the will, and to uphold its fairness and validity in and out of court. · To take the necessary precautions for conservation and custody of the assets, with the direct intervention of the heirs. · Sale of movable and immovable property is allowed when there are not sufficient funds in the inheritance for the payment of the funeral and legacies. This requires the consent of the heirs (if denied, the judicial authority will decide). 194
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2022
The executor has a duty to comply with testamentary dispositions, to draw up an inventory of the inheritance assets, and to render accounts, and they must give an account of their duties to the heirs. In the absence of the testator themselves setting a time limit, the term of the executor will be one year from the date of acceptance, although the heirs and legatees may by mutual agreement extend the term for as long as they deem necessary. In addition to fulfilment of the mandate, the executorship would be terminated by the death of the executor, the impossibility of their performing their duties, resignation (which can generate liability for damages), or removal from noce due to wilful misconduct, negligence, abusive management of the assets, or conflict of interest between the executor and the heirs. As for the accountant partidor, or partitioning accountant, they carry out the divisional operations of the inheritance, which is why one of their powers is to interpret the will. It is a voluntary position, undertaken on their own, and approval by the heirs of the “partition” is not necessary (although they may challenge it judicially). It is a temporary position (the rules of the executor apply), and unpaid, although (as with the executor) the testator may establish a remuneration amount in the will. Also, if the testator hired the professional services of an accountant partidor, it will also be a paid position. Welex Lawyers & Accountants C/ Ramón Gómez de la Serna 23, Local 7, Marbella Tel.
