LETTER FROM MATT WEBER

Normally at this time of year, I write an article about home maintenance in preparation for winter weather, when families hunker down out of the cold. This year, everyone has already been hunkering down for a long time, and we’re all fed up with it. Nevertheless, the social distance epidemic has claimed another scalp, and it’s a big one: The 2021 International Builder’s Show. Originally scheduled to be held in Orlando, Florida, this February, it has now “transitioned to a virtual event,” which I’m sure is well intentioned but could never replace the in-person product demonstrations, learning opportunities, and networking capabilities that the convention typically offers. The International Builder’s Show is known as the largest “light construction” (as in single-family

PUBLISHER JEREMY HOLLINGSWORTH jeremy@HIRpub.com EDITOR-IN-CHIEF MATT WEBER matt@HIRpub.com

homes) event in the world and it draws thousands of exhibitors and attendees from around the globe. For years, the show has been a sprawling multi-day affair, and it’s where we launched the first issue of Home Improvement and Repair. I fail to see how that experience can be repackaged into a website. HIR magazine will participate, though, and we’ll hope for the best virtual event possible, because when you can’t reach out and touch someone, internet technology does offer many wonders. It provides a great way to communicate news instantly and interact with others remotely. To that end, I’d like to encourage our readers to engage with us online. You can find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HIRpub or look us up on Instagram under “Home Improvement and Repair.” Plus, we post a great deal of content

STARTSMART THIS NEW HOUSEHOLD DYNAMIC CAN CAUSE ENERGY USE AND UTILITY BILLS TO SKYROCKET. NEW “FULL HOUSE” BRINGS HIGH ENERGY BILLS The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly turned the “new normal” household into hubs for all family activities, moving the workplace, grade school, college, extracurricular activities, meals, gyms, hobbies, all under one roof. In fact, 82 percent of company leaders surveyed by research firm Gartner say their organizations plan to permit employees to work remotely at least part of the time even post-pandemic. This new household dynamic can cause energy use and utility bills to skyrocket. As heating and cooling accounts for nearly half of home energy use, new technology can help lower bills. Get “Smart” About Climate Control: Smart HVAC systems have built-in Internet capability that can control temperatures directly without additional equipment. Smart Home Thermostats create “smart” systems by enabling remote temperature control via a mobile or Internet-connected device or voice-operated home automation system. from anywhere using a mobile device. Voice-control capability uses digital assistants, like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, to verbally dictate home temperatures to improve energy savings. Find Your Efficient Comfort Zone: Many of us live in homes designed for bigger families, but have yet to downsize. If you find yourself using a fraction of your home on a regular basis, consider upgrading to a zoned ducted or ductless system, which can save energy heating and cooling spaces where you and your family don’t spend much time. Get a Split: Among the most energy-efficient heating and cooling products, electricity-powered ductless mini-split systems can save as much as 25 percent on your energy bill. Available from companies such as Fujitsu General America, mini-splits use thin copper tubing to pump refrigerant from an outdoor compressor directly into an indoor air-handling unit, where the air is quietly distributed to the interior space. STARTSMART YOU DON’T HAVE TO BREAK THE BANK TO SAVE ENERGY AROUND THE HOME.

GO LOW (TECH) TO SAVE ENERGY You don’t have to break the bank to save energy around the home. Try these simple steps. Capture the Sun: Open south-facing curtains at sunrise to make best use of “passive solar gain.” This works particularly well if your home has stone or concrete floors which have a large thermal mass, meaning they soak up a lot of heat and release it slowly. Remember to close your curtains as soon as the sun dips to trap the free heat. Force Down Warm Air: Denser, cooler air stays closer to the ground, and warmer air rises. So, force it downwards with a low-speed fan. Use the switch on the motor to reverse the fan's setting so it sends the warm air upwards, as this will distribute it back down the walls to mix with the rest of the air in the room, gradually raising the ambient temperature.

10

Home Improvement and Repair | The Fall Issue

Use Waste Heat: Some equipment in your home generates “waste heat” during normal operation. For example, your computer's CPU belts out waste heat that’s conducted to a heat sink and then dispersed with the aid of cooling fins and a fan. Position your workstation where you can best use that thermal energy to help warm the room. Lock it In: Insulate and fill the gaps. Warmed air leaking out around poorly sealed window frames, power sockets, recessed light fittings, and other gaps is a big source of heat loss in homes. Use caulk, foam strips or expanding foam to seal up unwanted holes in your home. Add extra insulation to your home cheaply by layering up mineral wool in your attic. Thick curtains help to insulate glass at windows. If your windows are single-glazed, consider sticking transparent polythene film to your internal window frames to act as super-low-budget “double-glazing.”

> 6 TIPS FOR STORING EQUIPMENT DURING WINTER Here comes winter. How and when you prepare your equipment for seasonal changes can save you time and money later. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) offers a few tips to ensure your lawnmower and other spring equipment will be ready to use when warmer temperatures return. 1. Service all equipment. Before storing summer equipment, clean and service it or take it to a small engine repair shop. Drain and change the engine oil and safely dispose of the old oil. Service the air filter, and perform any other maintenance as directed by the owner’s manual. Lost manuals can be found online; save a copy on your computer if possible. 2. Handle fuel properly. Unused fuel left in gas tanks over the winter can go stale and even damage equipment. Before storing equipment, add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank, then run the equipment to distribute it. Turn the engine off, allow the machine to cool, then restart and run until the gas tank is empty. For winter equipment, buy the recommended type of fuel no more than 30 days before use. Use fuel with no more than 10% ethanol in outdoor power equipment.

3. Charge the battery. Remove and fully charge batteries before storing. Don’t store batteries on metal shelves or allow them to touch metal objects. Store them on a plastic or wood shelf in a climate-controlled structure. 4. Shelter summer equipment. Before the weather changes, make space in the garage or basement so there is room to store larger yard items. Store summer equipment in a clean and dry place such as a garage, barn or shed. 5. Prepare for winter equipment. Clean up the yard of sticks or debris that can damage winter equipment such as snow-throwers. Clear the paths used regularly in your yard, especially during the winter when leaves or snow can “hide” things. 6. Get the right extension cord for your generator. Keep heavy-duty, weather-proof extension cords long enough to operate the generator a safe distance from the house or building. Never operate a generator indoors, in a garage, breezeway or under an open window.

STARTSMART QUESTION: Should I follow any strict guidelines when building a new mailbox?

ANSWER: When planning the look and design of your mailbox, you should first check with your local municipal codes (and your homeowner’s association, if you have one) for any restrictions in your area. A mailbox must meet the US Postal Service’s size and construction standards. When designing your own, position the mailbox 41 to 45 inches from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox or point of mail entry. Place your mailbox 6 to 8 inches back from the curb. (If you do not have a raised curb, contact your local postmaster for guidance.) Put your house number on the mailbox. If your mailbox is on a different street from your house, put your full street address on the box. When installing the mailbox, the Federal Highway Administration prefers supports that are stable but bend or fall away if a car hits them. Suggestions include a 4-by-4-in. wooden support or a 2-in. diameter standard steel or aluminum pipe. Bury your post no more than 24 inches deep. Due to the risk of injury from car accidents, the FHA advises against using unyielding or potentially dangerous supports, like heavy metal pipes, concrete posts and farm equipment (e.g., milk cans filled with concrete). Brick-walled mailboxes are common in many residential areas, however, so check with local guidelines for what is allowable and use your best judgement. Visit www.usps.com for more information.

TOOL TECH

It’s difficult to get things done when your workspace is cluttered. Disorganization leads to lost time and productivity. I know because I’ve spent a large chunk of my life searching for tools that are not where they should be. When it’s time to organize a garage or workshop, set your sights on convenient storage, accessible equipment, and easy visibility throughout the room.

WALL-MOUNTED STORAGE SYSTEMS Available from several manufacturers under varying brand names, wall-mounted storage systems have become a staple in garage organization. They generally use slats or channels that hold a huge range of hooks, hangers, shelves, cabinets, tool-holders and other accessories. It’s hard to argue against their strong selling points. MULTI-POINT ILLUMINATION SYSTEMS It’s hard to get organized when you have trouble seeing. We replaced a couple of ceiling lights at the HIR workshop with the new MPI Multi-Point Illumination Systems available from STKR Concepts. Using LED technology, these lights draw much less electricity and allow you to direct the light right where you need it. The central hub of the MPI system can simply screw right into an existing light-bulb fixture. The surrounding light pods connect to the central hub with push-fit cables and extend up to 9.5 feet in any direction, where they can be screwed to the ceiling exactly where you need them. Just twist the light pods to tighten any excess slack in the cables. After installing the system, the combined light output of the MPI far outshined the old fixtures,

lighting the periphery of the workshop—and eliminating shadows—much more thoroughly. What’s more, the MPI’s motion sensor keeps the light off until we walk into the room, saving energy and lowering the electrical bills. stkrconcepts.com

That works fine until it rains and the temperature drops to freezing in the winter. To avoid the dusty mess when working inside the shelter of my workshop, I recently installed the Oneida Dust Deputy Bagger, and I’m glad I did. DUST DEPUTY BAGGER When I work at home, my two main woodworking tools are a large table saw and miter saw, both mounted on wheeled carts. My workshop is currently set up in a two-car garage, and when I need to cut boards, I often roll them outside to avoid the mess of sawdust.

The Dust Deputy Bagger Kit includes a mounting template. Measure up 30” from the floor, level the template, and mark your fastener holes. The kit includes screws for mounting to wall studs, but I switched to concrete screws to mount into a block wall. Concrete screws require a hammer-drill to bore the pilot holes. I added washers to make sure the concrete screws had plenty of holding power around the mounting bracket’s fastener holes.

Add the bucket-shaped accumulation bin beneath the Separator and use a wrench to tighten the bolts so the connections are airtight.

The Dust Deputy Bagger includes Oneida Air Systems' patented Cyclone Separator that mounts with a metal bracket to a stud or concrete block wall. It occupies only a small footprint to remain unobtrusive and connects to the hose of your vacuum. A second hose included with the kit connects to your power tool. When the tool and hose are activated, the Separator collects the dust and debris from the airstream into a disposable plastic bag before it reaches the vacuum, eliminating filter clogging and suction loss. The kit includes the Cyclone Separator, a 3.9-gallon accumulation bin, wall-mount hardware, and five clear 3-mil bags for better visibility of fill level and easy disposal. Cutting wood inside the shop is now much tidier, and I no longer have to work around the weather. And when it’s not in use, I remove the hoses but leave the separator mounted to the wall, nicely out of the way. oneida-air.com

Install the metal screen at the bottom of the bin by bending its metal tabs around the lip of the bucket. Once you connect the vacuum hoses and strap plastic bag onto the bin, the Dust Deputy Bagger is ready for use.

EPOXY FLOORING The DaiHard Garage Floor Epoxy Kit can add visual appeal and excellent durability to all kinds of interior concrete floor surfaces. It locks firmly into your concrete and shields it from stains, impact, hot tires, continual heavy traffic, chemicals and more. This industrial look is popular for garages, however application of an epoxy product requires careful surface preparation. If your concrete is new, very smooth, or powdery then etching is recommended to ensure the best epoxy bond. Pour a Concrete Cleaner/Etcher onto wet concrete, scrub the solution with a stiff deck brush, and let it fizz for a few minutes. After etching, thoroughly rinse away any residues. If the project is outdoors or easy to drain, pressure-wash for the most effective cleaning before adding epoxy. Operate the pressure washer at 1700 PSI with a “turbo nozzle” or “orbital tip” a few inches from the ground. Slowly move the pressure-washer wand in a uniform manner. This step removes surface residues and efflorescence that can block

TIPS

FOR FLOOR TILE By Carter Swift

As a building material, tile provides limitless design options and has done so for thousands of years. When made of ceramic, porcelain or natural stone, tile makes a reliable floor covering because it does not burn, fade or easily stain when properly installed. Ceramic tile is water-resistant, stands up to wear, and can feasibly last as long as the substrate that supports it. Whether you hire out the work or attempt to tackle the installation yourself, the following are some helpful tips to keep in mind for your next tile project. PLACE YOUR ORDER Research the types of tile available for your project. For flooring, vitrified tiles are best because they're durable and can withstand heavy traffic. Vitrified tile is a ceramic tile with low porosity often used outdoors due to its frost resistance. Porcelain tiles fall under the category of vitrified tiles.

THERE’S A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT TILE INSTALLATION

expensive, making it more economical for large floors. Ask your flooring supplier which adhesive will work best for a given application. The type of tile, where the tile will be installed, and the type of substrate are all important factors. It's important to choose the right mortar trowel for the job. Generally speaking, most standard size floor tile installed with mortar will require a 1/4-in. square-notched trowel. For 16-by-16-in. or larger tiles, choose a larger trowel with notches at least 1/2 inch deep. For mosaic sheets, use a 3/16-in. V-notched trowel to spread the adhesive. However, trowel size really should be selected based on what size provides the required coverage and mortar thickness for your application. You also have options for grout. Use sanded grout for joints from 1/8 inch up to 5/8 inch to resist cracking and shrinkage. Use unsanded grout for grout joints up to 1/8 inch. Use only unsanded grout with glass, polished marble, or metal tile to avoid scratching the tile. Acrylic grout is a great option for wet areas like decks and showers because it’s mildew-resistant and retains color well. Epoxy grout is less DIY-friendly than other types, but it doesn't need to be sealed. Avoid using too much water when mixing grout, which could weaken the grout joints. Buy extra grout to make sure you'll have enough to complete the project, and always read and follow the product instructions carefully. Plan to include a radiant heat system? If so, now is the time to explore the many low-voltage systems that work well to heat an otherwise cold tile floor.

s

For outdoor floor tiles, ceramic tile manu_ facturers offer a wide variety of slip-resistant flooring options for any application. Size matters. Large format tiles lend a more spacious look to a large living space, but the tiles should match the room size. Large tiles in a smaller room can make the room look even smaller. If this is the case, use medium size tiles. When remodeling a small bathroom, most designers recommend using small tiles, because large tiles can make the room feel crowded and cramped. Always purchase an additional 5 to 10 percent more tiles than you need for coverage. The extra material takes care of cuts and breakages during installation. Most companies will offer a refund on unused boxes of tile. Tiles are available glazed or unglazed. Glazed tiles have a layer of liquid glass added to the tile prior to the firing process. (Note that for unglazed tiles, some grouts recommend use of a groutrelease agent to prevent staining and make cleanup easier.) You have options for floor-tile adhesive. Ready-mixed thinset mortar might be easiest to use for DIY'ers because it can be used straight from the container. Powder thinset mortar must be mixed with water but is less

26

Consider the latest tile floor innovations when planning your order. An uncoupling membrane such as the Ditra underlayment from Schluter Systems allows the tile to move independently of the subfloor, preventing cracks and breakage. Ditra-HEAT is a hardwired radiant floor-heating system that can be easily integrated into the uncoupling layer to warm the tiles.

30 TIPS FOR FLOOR TILE

s The QEP LASH Tile Leveling Clips help installers level, align, space and hold tile in place to maintain even elevation and ensure a consistent finish. The flat clips (part A of a two part system) grant even grout lines and align neighboring tile. The wedges (part B) insert through the flat clips to hold the tile at an even height. For quick and easy removal, clips are designed to break off below the surface of the tile.

PREP STEPS For floor tile, check the subfloor for level and flatness. Checking for level is particularly important if you’ll be adding wall tile. Set a 4-ft. level on a long straight board to read over a large area. Swivel the board to find dips or bumps. The floor doesn’t have to be perfectly flat, but the requirement is typically no more than 1/4 in. variation in 10 feet and no more than 1/16 in. variation in 12 inches. For uneven concrete, it might be necessary to grind down the surface or apply a self-leveling underlayment to flatten the subfloor. Plywood subfloors with high spots can be belt-sanded. Tile should be installed over a rigid underlayment that resists swelling and contraction, which can damage the finished floor. For plywood subfloors (minimum 19/32 in. thick), cement-board works well for an underlayment. Stagger the cement-board joints (and avoid aligning with the subfloor joints). Leave an

Drive the fasteners flush, spacing them according to the product instructions. Fill the joints with mortar, and apply fiber tape to the joints prior to tiling. Not only should tile subfloors be flat, but also strong and rigid. Joist spacing must not exceed 24 in. on center. Any give or flexibility in the subfloor can lead to cracks in the grout joints. (See sidebar.) For tile installed over a sturdy subfloor, you can also use a new polyethylene membrane that “uncouples” the thin-set mortar from the subfloor to protect against material movement. TILE LAYOUT For floor tile, check the room for square. Use the 3-4-5 rule to check that the corners form right angles: Measure and mark a point 4 feet from the corner along one wall. Measure and mark a point 3 feet from the same corner on the intersecting wall. A diagonal line between the

Any minor amount of deflection in the subfloor can result in cracks or damage to a tiled floor. A subfloor that still has a degree of “bounce” or vibration when people walk across the room might be suitable for resilient flooring, but it’s not suitable for tile installation. Pro remodeler Ritchie Hamilton addressed this problem at a house that had settled with sagging joists. Beneath the subfloor, Hamilton constructed a perpendicular beam with posts and piers to level the joists and stabilize the framing with additional support that connects to the ground. The beam serves two purposes. First, it bridges across the bottom of the joists so they can all be jacked up and leveled to the same height to reduce a sag in the floor. Second, by locating the beam midway through the span of the joists, the beam essentially halves the length of the unsupported framing, which takes the flex out of the flooring. He fastened the beam to the floor joists with metal hangers, arresting movement and giving strength and stability to the subfloor, which will ensure a long-lasting tile floor installation.

two points should measure 5 feet if the chalk lines are at 90 degrees. In large rooms you can double the ratio (i.e., 6-8-10). If the room is less than 1/8-in. out of square within 10 feet, it can usually be disguised within the layout. However, if one wall is significantly out of square, then lay out the floor so the tapered tiles will run along the least noticeable wall. A standard procedure for floor tile layout in a rectangular room is called the quarter method, in which the room is actually divided into four quarters to help sequence the layout. First step is to measure and mark the midpoint of all four walls. Snap intersecting chalk lines at the center point of the site, forming a square cross. Start by laying a row of tiles in a dry run along each of the four lines, all the way to the walls, creating a cross of tiles in the center of the room. If necessary, use plastic spacers to keep the grout joints even. Lay tile starting from the center and work your way outward. Any cut tiles will be at the edge of the floor. Adjust the layout so that all cut tiles will be the same size on one side of the room as the other side.

30 TIPS FOR FLOOR TILE

Keep in mind, however, most homeowners prefer a row of full tiles at the room’s entry. Tiles placed in a diagonal pattern can make a room appear larger. For diagonal tile layout, use the center point established with the quarter method and snap lines across the two diagonals of the room creating an “X” on top of the cross. Then lay out the tiles along the X as with using the quarter method. Make sure the lines are at true right angles and that the partial border tiles are equal in width. Rectangular rooms make it easy to design the tile layout, but oddly shaped rooms or those with obstacles such as kitchen islands can be more complicated. For a visual reference, sketch a scale drawing of the living space on graph paper, including measurements, walls and any other obstacles. Tile is sold in square-foot quantities, and graphing the area can help determine the quantity needed.

Flooring professionals will remove all baseboard trim before laying the tile. However, if floor space is not a primary concern and the baseboard has a tall enough profile, you might be able to save time and labor by running the tile against the baseboards and concealing the joint with shoe molding. Leave an expansion gap between the tile and baseboards. INSTALLATION ADVICE Use a trowel to spread mortar over the floor where the tile will go, combing the bed to create furrows, but be careful not to press the trowel down all the way to the backer-board. As you apply the tile to the mortar, twist it slightly and press down. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the center of the tile to set it properly. For tiles larger than 8-by-8 inches, back-butter the floor tiles prior to installation. "Back buttering" refers to spreading mortar onto a tile just

before it is placed to ensure proper adhesive coverage. This is particularly important with natural stone tiles which tend to be more brittle. The thin layer of adhesive on the tile bonds easily with the layer troweled onto the floor to eliminate air gaps and create a strong bond. Make sure tiles are level with one another by placing a long straight-edge across several tiles in a row. Adjust the installation to fix any discrepancies before the mortar sets. When working with small tile or mosaics, smoothing out the mortar ridges can help

ensure proper coverage. This is especially important in wet areas like bathrooms, where voids in the mortar can trap moisture. Wet areas should also be protected using a waterproof membrane beneath the mortar. Installing pebble tile? The irregular shape of the pebbles can result in visible "sheet lines" when installed with the mesh backing. To avoid this, tile pros often break up the sheets or install the pebbles one at a time. Clean up any excess mortar as you go. Use a damp sponge to wipe it up completely so it

using the correct grout for the application, a joint within the grout manufacturer’s recommended width tolerance should not lead to cracking. For the cleanest appearance with less maintenance, many professionals recommend a joint as thin as 1/8 to 3/16 inch. Note that when installing tile in a modular pattern (using tiles of multiple sizes), the grout joint should be specified to the supplier along with the tiles. Not all tiles are made to be installed in a modular pattern, and using tiles that are not designed for a modular pattern will have varying grout-joint widths. Grout can be applied using a rubber float then allowed to cure overnight. On the next day, scrub the floor with a damp, abrasive sponge to remove grout residue from the floor. It’s a good idea to repeat this for the next three days. EXOTIC FINISHES WITH VENETIAN PLASTER

With the right tools, coloring and texturing techniques, the walls of your home can become works of art. Gian Carlo Sagasti, founder of Exotic Wall Finishes & Design, uses Venetian Plaster to create beautiful art pieces on interior walls. According to Gian, the goal is to leave your walls looking “sexy,” using a number of decorative wall finishing techniques, including Marmorino, Venetian Plaster, Faux finishes, Lime Paint and Lime Washes, offering matte or textured finishes, shiny polished finishes, and more. Venetian plaster is lime plaster mixed with marble dust, applied as a decorative finish to walls or ceilings using a trowel in thin, multiple layers with a single color which, when compressed and burnished, produces different colors or shades to achieve an artistic effect. The burnishing process creates a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture. Marmorino is a lime-based plaster used for both interiors and exteriors. It can be

finished in an elegant matte finish or the traditional shiny Venetian plaster finish. The natural composition of Marmorino makes it mildew resistant and waterproof, and its visual effect makes it a great alternative to marble and ceramic tiles. APPLICATION BASICS Venetian plaster can be applied to most walls and ceiling surfaces that are flat and smooth. Although porous surfaces work best, modern Venetian plasters contain polymers that adhere

The surfaces should then be primed or covered with flat, water-based paint before you apply the Venetian plaster. Lime-based plasters will require a special primer to protect the walls. You can achieve a highly polished look by burnishing this third last layer as you go, every 3-4 feet. Burnishing is accomplished by using a well conditioned, high-grade stainless steel trowel in long strokes and with steady pressure to compress and polish the surface as it dries. Add protection to the Venetian plaster surface by applying a top coat. Choose a product that is specifically recommended for whatever brand of plaster you applied. The top coat is often applied with a trowel soon after the plaster has dried. Paste wax used as a top coat can create

a sheen and add protection. You can then buff the surface with a clean white cloth or even an electric buffing tool. A smooth finish isn’t the only option, however. You can use full a range of tools to create certain textured finishes, from rollers with different patterns and notched trowels for a “drag effect” finish—even tools to create a “crocodile skin” appearance. The best way to improve your skills is to purchase some drywall and experiment with various textures, colors and finish techniques before you apply them to your home. DECK2WALL SPACERS www.deck2wallspacer.com The deck-ledger connection is notoriously susceptible to rot, which can dangerously affect the stability and support of the deck. Deck2wall Spacers help prevent rot from occurring by separating the ledger from the supporting structure, providing a path for water and debris to flow harmlessly through the assembly, while promoting circulation and drying. Stacked washers have often been used as spacers over lag bolts, but Deck2wall Spacers have attachment holes to keep them in perfect alignment for faster and easier installation. They offer more bearing surface than washers for better load distribution, and the plastic spacers are non-corrosive. Plus, the onepiece design and installation method provide superior waterproofing. Deck2Wall Spacers also work as a longlasting solution for attaching shade structures, posts, stair stringers, landings, built-up beams or mechanical equipment. Made in the USA, the spacers are injection-molded, fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene, 5/8-in. thick with a 2-1/2-in. diameter and a 11/16-in. bolt hole (use #6-8 corrosion resistant screws in attachment holes).

INSTALL SHIPLAP SIDING ON A CEILING By Matt Weber Like many other homeowners, my wife and I had grown weary of the sea of cottage cheese that covered our ceiling. Acoustical “popcorn” texture is no longer in style, and we had never really liked it in the first place. To get a new look, we either had to scrape it off (an enormous mess) or conceal it with something more attractive. We chose the second option. Shiplap siding has become popular for interiors thanks in part to its prevalent use as a decorative accent on certain cable TV shows. Not only do the boards offer a different look than the usual painted plaster/drywall surfaces of a home, but shiplap’s simple overlapping installation means DIY remodelers don’t have to tape and mud drywall joints. That is a huge selling point, considering that finishing the joints is

the most difficult and time-consuming drywall skill to master. Shiplap can be used to create accent walls, barn doors, headboards, mirrors, frames and wall art. After some consideration, we settled on installing a shiplap ceiling once we found a material with a “rustic” finish. Shanna and I have three young kids--ages 9, 5 and 3--which means our home takes major abuse. Finely finished furniture does’t stand a chance of survival, but a rustic interior tends to disguise the dents and dings our children regularly inflict on the home. Since our house is decked out in a rustic style, the “Rustic Collection" of the UFPEdge shiplap material seemed to fit right in. The UFP-Edge boards are made from genuine lumber that has been distressed, primed and painted to have the authentic look and

texture of vintage rustic barn wood. The boards are also consistently sized to eliminate any sorting or guesswork during installation.

[STEP 3] I tacked up the first board using trim-head screws to test the fit and layout of the shiplap to the ceiling.

[STEP 4] As with any boardpattern installation, you’ll have to measure and cut some pieces to fit.

HOW IT’S HANGING At the time of installation, I did not find specific guidelines on fastening the shiplap boards to a ceiling. I phoned the manufacturer, who said the most critical element was to adhere to the specific recommendations for fastener depth. The instructions called for trim nails (15 or 16 gauge) long enough for 1-1/4to 1-1/2-in. of penetration into solid wood framing. Because these boards would be defying gravity, I decided the smart move was to aim for 1-1/2-in. fastener penetration into the ceiling joists. The fasteners should be driven through the tongue of the shiplap (1/4 in. thick) as well as the face of the shiplap (1/2 in. thick). Avoid nailing through the overlaps. So, to determine the required fastener length, I used the following equation: 5/8” textured ceiling thickness + 4/8” shiplap thickness = 1-1/8”

46

[STEP 5] The boards simply overlap to conceal the tongue of the previous row.

1-1/8” + 1-4/8” penetration depth into framing = 2-5/8” fastener length

[STEP 6] The shiplap must be nailed through the tongue and the face of the board 1-1/2” into solid framing. The board tongues measure roughly 1/4“, but the board face is 1/2” thick.

[STEP 7] As the installation progressed, I fastened the board tongues with 2-1/2” 16-gauge finish nails.

INSTALL SHIPLAP SIDING ON A CEILING

[STEP 8] To fasten through the board faces, I first equipped my framing nailer with a home-made protective tip made from pipe insulation. The tip prevents damage to the boards as I fire 3” framing nails through the thickest part of the shiplap roughly 1” from the bottom edge.

Now, here’s where things get fun. I was planning to nail all the boards in place with a 16-gauge finish nailer, but the nails for a 16-gauge gun are only sold up to 2-1/2-in. long. That nail size works fine when nailing the thin tongue of the shiplap boards, but it would be 1/8-in. short of my ideal fastener length when nailing through the face. Could I get away with using shorter nails and have no problems with the boards detaching? Very possibly, yes. But since I did not know for sure, I decided to play it safe and take a different route. One option is to hand-nail 10d finish nails through the shiplap and into the framing. These 3-in. nails work well and leave only a small nail hole to repair, but the work is a slow process, and the repetitive motion can really wear on your neck and shoulders. I did not have that kind of patience and went with bigger bullets. Although, pneumatic finish nails are generally only sold in 2-1/2-in. sizes, pneumatic framing nails are a different story. Because this was a rustic paintgrade project, I face-nailed the boards with 3-in. framing nails using a cordless Paslode gun. This allowed me to quickly fire the boards into the framing with little effort, knowing the nail size and penetration depth would Read our magazine online at HIRpub.digital

[STEP 9] The framing nailer proved to be a fast and strong way to face-nail the boards overhead.

[STEP 10] You’ll need to set up a nearby workbench or saw-horses to make all the board cuts. Use a circular saw with a fine-tooth blade. Keep a jigsaw handy if you have any cutouts to make for ceiling penetrations, such as light fixtures or ceiling fans.

To protect the boards from being damaged by the tip of the nailer, I duct-taped a homemade “no-mar tip” onto the gun made from a ringlet of foam pipe insulation. Note that I DO NOT recommend the use of framing nails for stain-grade shiplap in which the woodgrain will be exposed, because the large nails will riddle the finish with holes that will be impossible to fully conceal with wood filler. However, the painted and textured surface of our rustic white boards meant I could apply a colormatched wood filler to the nail holes and then brush the spackling repairs to match the factory texture. In the end, this approach to installation worked very well-finish nails through the tongue, framing nails through the face. After installing some simple matching molding along the edges, we had a cool, new shiplap ceiling with a rustic appearance and no cottage cheese in sight.
