LETTER FROM MATT WEBER

It has been a rough couple of years for everyone, but things are looking up. I love seeing full football stadiums, packed concerts and busy restaurants—things that I once took for granted but now appreciate more than ever. It’s also nice to see the convention circuit back in action.

OUR TEAM WILL SOON BE HEADING TO LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, FOR THE 2021 NATIONAL HARDWARE SHOW.

PUBLISHER JEREMY HOLLINGSWORTH jeremy@HIRpub.com EDITOR-IN-CHIEF MATT WEBER matt@HIRpub.com

Technology is nice, but I’m oldfashioned and don’t particularly like Zoom meetings or reporting on new tools and home technologies from a long distance away. We launched Home Improvement and Repairs magazine at the 2020 International Builder’s Show—the largest light construction show in the world and the best place to get up close with all things new in home construction. Then—bam!— word of a pandemic spread like wildfire and the world went into lockdown. No more conventions. Until now. Luckily, I’m looking forward to a big step back toward normalcy: attending our first convention since the emergence of the ‘Rona. Our team will soon be heading to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the 2021 National Hardware Show. The NHS is an enormous trade show where tool and equipment companies unveil the new products that will soon stock the aisles of your local hardware store. The HIR staff

normally attends every year to check out thousands of hardware, tool and lawn/garden products collected in one place. Last year’s show cancellation was the one exception in more than a decade. I’m happy to see the world now swinging back in the right direction. And you can count on us to give you the scoop on all the action as soon as we return. Get ready for highlights of all the new tools and gadgets we find at the show, so you can write your Christmas list. Thanks for reading.

No more messy, time-consuming and nerve-wracking tile installations with grout or glue. Effortless DIY, easy-to-follow instructions are included for a clean and dust-free installation. Once Smart Tiles have completely adhered to the surface, generally after 48 hours, they’re guaranteed to stay in place.

5 PRECEPT SINGLE-HANDLE COMMERCIAL KITCHEN FAUCET MFG: Peerless WEB: www.peerlessfaucet.com INFO: Available in chrome, stainless, or matte black finishes, the Peerless brand’s new Precept Single-Handle Commercial Kitchen Faucet adds a sleek, modern touch at an affordable price. The three-function, pull-down sprayer features PowerRinse mode for extra cleaning force. When it comes to installation, the new Precept Faucet is the easiest model the HIR team has ever worked with, which will be nice for tradesmen and DIY’ers. The integrated supply lines slip right through the faucet hole on the counter. Just finger-thread the lock-nut onto the faucet from beneath the countertop, then tighten it with a screwdriver (brilliant!) rather than a wrench. Connect the supply lines, screw on the faucet head, and you’re finished. Installing with a screwdriver is so much easier in the cramped space than using a wrench under the faucet, because you rarely have enough clearance for a full turn of the wrench handle. This new method is quicker and easier. On the installation shown, we included a deck plate (aka escutcheon) to cover the old countertop holes from a three-hole faucet.

SAVE MONEY ON YOUR BATHROOM REMODELING By Lynnet Kwamboka

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in a home, perhaps the reason why so many homeowners consider upgrading the bath during remodels. Such types of home makeover projects tend to dent your savings account, but you can practice several tips to save cash when remodeling the bathroom. Your Mirror One of the features that first meets the eye of anyone entering the bathroom is the mirror above the sink. Adding a frame is an excellent way of adding a visual appeal to the mirror. It also helps in veiling age-related wear-and-tear along the mirror's edges. Other practical ideas for upgrading your bathroom mirror include adding shelves below the mirror to increase storage space or adding subtle lighting around the window to eliminate shadow under your eyes and chin. Retain the Plumbing Location Using your existing plumbing system will save you a lot of cash, and your designers and builders can upgrade the bathroom without changing the conduit 16

Home Improvement and Repairs | The Fall Issue

network. Hiring a contractor to relocate the plumbing system can cost as much as $5,000, and you can save that by simply using your existing system. Retain the Size and Layout of the Bathroom Changing the bathroom layout means moving some sections of the plumbing system (the toilet discharge and supply lines) and potentially require relocation of electrical work as well, all of which can expand your budget significantly. Rearranging fixtures to a different location is particularly expensive and should only be considered if necessary to suit the homeowner's needs and preferences. Don't Bring Down Load-Bearing Walls Load-bearing walls are built to hold the second floor and roofing in a home. Bringing down and reconstructing load-bearing walls can be an expensive affair, because the process involves temporary support of the overhead structure as well as construction of a new load-bearing header. As an alternative, try expanding your bathroom space by relocating non-load-bearing walls, such as the interior walls that run parallel to

StartSmartEDIT.qxp_Layout 1 10/8/21 10:21 AM Page 17

> ceiling joists. These can be removed at a pocketfriendly budget compared to their load-bearing counterparts. Replace Your Vanity For creative home-remodeling enthusiasts, flea markets, antique stores and resellers are an excellent source of beautiful home-improvement accessories. In that case, you can head out and shop for a standalone, rustic dresser to replace your old bathroom vanity. It's an ideal project for DIY'ers as they can easily use it for different functions: to hide their plumbing system, provide storage, and hang towel bars on the side. Update the Toilet If you are the budget-centric homeowner, consider replacing the lid and toilet seat instead of splurging considerable cash on the entire porcelain perch. Assuming the toilet is functional, you can refresh your bath's look without breaking the bank by simply changing the two tops. Refinish instead of Replace Removing and replacing your existing plumbing connections, bathtubs, and showers requires a big budget because it involves demolitions and reconstruction projects. You need to ask yourself: "Am I making these changes to improve the aesthetics or functionality of the bathroom?" For visual appeal, you can upgrade these fixtures by dressing them up instead of replacing them. Hence, refinish your tub with an eye-catching, protective coating or repaint the bathroom cabinetry rather than installing new cabinets. Skip Floor-to-Ceiling Tiles Tiles are an excellent home-improvement material that can enhance the look of any interior, but you should break the pattern (and monotony) by using different materials, such as reclaimed wood panels. These come in a range of textures and finishes that add warmth and rustic character while contrasting excellently with white fixtures and other minimalistic elements in the bath. Try Installing Open Shelves The bathroom is a private room with limited space, but installing open shelves creates a visual illusion of a much larger room in smaller square footage. Using open shelves is less costly than installing new cabinets. You can add drawers and covered baskets to store your private items and undergarments. On the flip side, you may want to show off your bathroom décor, beautiful towels, and colorful soaps in the open shelves. To add an attractive aspect to it, ensure that every item and element on each shelf is clean and well-arranged. Read our magazine online at HomeImprovementAndRepairs.com

3 TIPS TO RENOVATE WITHOUT THE WAIT “Everything is on backorder! How can I complete my kitchen renovation?” is probably a question many home remodelers are asking these days. Home renovation spending is up 11% this year, but factories worldwide struggle to keep up with demand due to pandemic-related supply issues. As a result of supply chain disruptions, there are significant shortages in raw materials like stainless steel, plastic, microchips and even shipping containers. Many retailers cannot keep products in stock. A six- to e ight-month backorder for product is now the norm. And, for the first time in about 30 years, appliance pricing is about to go up significantly. Consider these tips if you don’t have weeks—or even months—to complete your project.

18

Home Improvement and Repairs | The Fall Issue

1. Be Flexible with the Size and Style of Product Consumers who are flexible have a better shot of getting products and appliances in a quick timeframe. “We recently worked with a client that was desperate for a sold-out 30-in. gas range by subbing in a 30-in. gas cooktop and wall-oven combination that fits in the same space, served the same purpose, and was in stock with no lead time,” says Melissa Haber, Vice President of EuroChef USA, importer of Verona appliances. “Alternatively, we questioned the ability to be flexible on the type of fuel connection. If an all-gas range isn’t in stock, see if there is the capability to run a 220V connection for an all-electric or a dual fuel range—and vice versa. Induction cooking is also a great alternative to traditional electric, if availability is better.”

StartSmartEDIT.qxp_Layout 1 10/8/21 10:21 AM Page 19

> Another consideration is to choose a neutral color like black or white, rather than stainless steel, which will pair just as well with existing appliances. This small trade-off means consumers can get cooking in their new kitchen that much sooner. “We’ve even experienced customers shaving a few inches off their planned countertop and cabinetry to fit a larger size cooktop or range just to have the product in time,” says Haber. 2. Call the Manufacturer Directly to Check Inventory and Lead Times “At Verona, we’ll take calls directly from consumers and help them locate product at their favorite e-tailer or local dealer,” says Haber. “It’s important to communicate directly with vendors and partners who have the most current information and are willing to assist you in accurately planning your project lead times.”

3. Be Flexible in Your Brand Choice Don’t be tied to matching brands, because that’s when consumers wind up waiting eight months for appliances because a matching fridge hasn’t arrived. Consider mixing brands—most stainless steel or even colored appliances will coordinate with each other, regardless of the manufacturer. “Don’t insist on the brand your neighbor bought that doesn’t have product in stock. Instead consider other brands that offer quality, performance and availability,” says Haber. “Customers willing to be flexible will probably end up paying less while still getting a feature-rich and equally reliable appliance at the end of the day. And, one that’s in stock when and where you need it.”

STARTSMART HOW HANDY ARE AMERICANS? Although the experience of buying and owning a home is different for everyone, there’s one thing we can all agree on: It’s important to know how to do some basic home-improvement yourself. HomeAdvisor recently surveyed homeowners across the country to see how well-versed they are in tasks like draining a water heater and mounting a television. The truth is, many homeowners don’t have a clue about how to fix household issues themselves, even if it’s something as simple as restoring power after blowing a fuse. Key takeaways: • Millennials think they’re the handiest generation, yet 1 in 4 won't change a lightbulb again. • Men are more likely to give up on a project than women

• Millennials were the most likely to abandon a project or call a professional (77%), while baby boomers (63%) were least likely. Americans consider themselves pretty handy. Of those surveyed, 18% reported that they were extremely handy. On average, Americans gave themselves a 3.7 out of 5 handiness rating, with men (3.8) considering themselves to be slightly handier than women (3.6). Millennials think they’re the handiest generation, checking in at 3.8, while baby boomers think they’re the least at 3.5. Most respondents (43%) picked up their homeimprovement knowledge from their parents. The internet was a distant second at 18%, followed by their partners at 16%. Others looked for help elsewhere, including how-to books, trial and error, and even their first boss. Even when Americans don’t consider themselves handy, it doesn’t stop them from trying and succeeding: 85% said they enjoy doing home improvement projects, and more than one in four have never had to abandon a project or ask for professional help.

20

Home Improvement and Repairs | The Fall Issue

StartSmartEDIT.qxp_Layout 1 10/8/21 12:13 PM Page 21

Moreover, nine in 10 say they’re comfortable in home-improvement stores. Quitters Never Win Despite the confidence level of survey respondents, they were willing to admit there were times when DIY tasks got the better of them. In fact, nearly three in four said they’ve had to either abandon a project or call in a local handyperson. Men are more likely to throw in the towel than women (77% vs. 68%, respectively). Millennials were the age group most likely to give up. Comfort Zone People are most likely to unclog a drain or assemble a piece of furniture themselves, according to the results. However, they’re likely to hand off projects that require a bit more work, like mowing the lawn or mounting a TV on the wall. Respondents were likely to leave the more difficult jobs to professionals: installing wood floors, replacing an entire toilet, and retiling a shower. You can read the full report, “Survey Reveals How Handy Americans Really Are,” at homeadvisor.com.

STARTSMART ASK MATT

QUESTION: Should a DIY’er begin learning with MIG or TIG welding? ANSWER: Most professionals consider TIG (tungsten inert gas) to be the “elite” of all welding processes, because a TIG weld is typically stronger, neater, and easier to control than with other processes. However, a TIG unit can be the most expensive of all welders, so a DIY’er should consider how much they’ll be using the machine before investing. Although a TIG setup works with a torch (electrode) to melt a welding rod with pinpoint accuracy, MIG (metal inert gas) welds utilize a wire-feed system. These machines are easy to learn but hard to master. For $300, a DIY’er can pick up a MIG welder from the home center, plug into a 110-volt outlet and begin welding immediately. These are great for building a grill or shop equipment. The MIG gun feeds flux-cored welding wire into the weld, and the weld begins as soon as you squeeze the trigger. However, all the smoke and sparks impede visibility and can make it difficult to achieve a truly clean weld. QUESTION: The upstairs bathtub is leaking, but I can’t find the exact source of the problem. I’ve replaced the faucet valves and the shower diverter, and I’ve sealed and tightened all the plumbing connections. Yet, when someone takes a shower, water still leaks onto the ceiling below. Where could the leak be coming from? ANSWER: It sounds like you have a bath/shower combo, and if you’ve ruled out everything else, you should inspect the bathtub overflow drain. The overflow drain is usually sealed with a foam rubber gasket which can deteriorate over time. Once the gasket fails, a significant amount of water can pass through the opening. Replacing an overflow drain gasket is a fairly easy fix. First, remove the screws that mount the cover plate. Pull out the lever assembly, including the drain plug. Remove the old gasket material from the tub and the body of the overflow drain. You’ll need to replace it with an “overflow washer” or “overflow gasket” from the hardware store. The gasket is beveled, so orient it with the thickest side down when installing it. Lubricate the gasket with a little plumber’s silicone grease and work it into place around the mouth of the overflow body. The overflow pipe will have a little play which should allow you to adjust its position and make room for the gasket. Make sure it seats evenly for a complete seal around the connection. Replace the drain assembly and fasten the plate with the two mounting screws to finish the job.

CRAFTSMAN TRIM FOR WINDOW CASING

This craftsman-style trim package includes a drink shelf on the patio side of the window.

DIY'ers might appreciate the simplicity of the cuts and assembly when installing craftsman style trim, because it eliminates miter joints and complicated angles in favor of straight 90-degree cuts and flat dimensional boards. Craftsman style carpentry originally emphasized simpler, hand-crafted trim made by skilled craftsmen from local wood. As a rebellion to the industrialization of the late 1800s, the craftsman style focused on the materials rather than fancy shapes. Therefore the trim pieces are usually flat, but different sizes are used to provide variety and dimensional detail. This simpler style makes a more natural transition to rustic interiors than the more formal neo-classical or Victorian trim styles with their elaborate fluted columns, beads and dentil patterns.

24

Home Improvement and Repairs | The Fall Issue

MAKE A PLAN To my knowledge, there is no rule-book to guide your trim design. It’s up to you to create your plan according to your taste and preference. In this case, I had installed a nice new Weather Shield Premium Series Double-Hung Window in a kitchen. It needed a little dressing up, and craftsman style trim would work best for the space, which was otherwise decorated with rustic or industrial-style decor. On the interior side of the window, I wanted a double-layer head cap, which I think is a cool “regal” look without appearing too highfalutin. I started with that idea, then decided the smaller of the two cap layers would look good as a horizontal accent at the top and bottom of the window, providing depth and shadow lines. I sketched the design on paper, and since I was

working with 1x boards which measure 3/4-in. thick, I decided to use a 3/4-in. reveal between all the trim layers. I purchased boards in various widths that would achieve this 3/4-in. reveal, as you can see labeled in the photo. That’s basically all there was to my plan.

26

Home Improvement and Repairs | The Fall Issue

Quick Tips • Sketch your design on paper. Keep the casing design symmetrical, with the widest trim pieces situated at the top of the window. • Boards mounted flat against the wall can be made of MDF but the boards

installed parallel to the floor, such as the window stool, should be made of a more durable solid wood because they will project into the room and be more susceptible to impact. • Paint and assemble as many of the trim components as possible prior to installation. • Reduce touch-up work by relying more on glue and less on fasteners. • Fill all fastener holes with vinyl spackling but fill all joints and seams with a flexible, paintable caulk/sealant. INSTALLATION BASICS

I pre-assembled the 2-piece head cap using wood glue and countersunk screws.

I did the same to make the 2-piece apron from 1x2 and 1x4.

I leveled the window apron and fastened it flush with the bottom of the window using 2-1/2" finish nails.

Next, I added the 1x4 verticals. Keep a close eye on the reveal between the trim pieces and the window so everything matches all the way around.

To firmly attach the 1x2s, I countersunk a few 2-1/2" self-drilling Fine Screws from U2 Fasteners. The small head of these trim screws makes it easy to conceal with spackling.

CRAFTSMAN TRIM FOR WINDOW CASING

The final 1x3 makes its appearance.

I attached the pre-assembled head cap with more Fine Screws. For paintgrade projects, finish up by spackling all fastener holes, but use a flexible, paintable caulk to seal the joints and seams between boards. Complete the project with a little touchup paint.

TAKE ME TO THE OTHER SIDE The opposite side of this kitchen window opened onto a covered, screened porch. I basically duplicated the same trim style there as on the interior—until I got to the window sill. There, I installed a modified window apron to serve as a drink shelf for folks hanging out on the porch. There's nothing revolutionary about the shelf design, but I did add a nosing strip to ensure drinks didn't slide off. I also used my router to round a bull-nose along the edge of the nosing to prevent injury from anyone bumping into it. I built the shelf just wide enough to hold a beverage and supported it with three 90-deg. triangular brackets. Because it projects into the room and is susceptible to damage from moving furniture, etc., I built the shelf from hardwood— an inch-thick reclaimed cherry stair tread, in fact—which is reason #1,001 why I never throw away quality wood material. WHY NOT? OR

By Matt Weber

Window replacement can be a difficult task for a DIY’er and should probably be left to the pros. I know this because I’ve installed a few windows, and I’m not a pro window installer. “But Matt, this story clearly shows photos of you installing a window, so if you can do it, then why shouldn’t I?” I’m not going to make a blanket decree about who should and should not attempt window installation. The insulated Weather-Shield replacement unit shown here looks beautiful, works great, is sealed up tight to conserve energy—and I’m proud of the work I’ve done.

WINDOW REPLACEMENT: DIY OR WHY NOT?

On this project, we installed a Weather Shield Premium Series Double-Hung Window, which is an aluminum-clad wood window. The extruded aluminum resists dents, dings and scratches and is backed by Weather Shield’s 20-year limited warranty. It’s finished with commercial-grade premium AAMA 2605 paint that resists fading and chalking.

Nevertheless, I thought it would be helpful to point out some of the on-site problems an installer is likely to encounter—obstacles and difficulties that won’t be covered in a manufacturer’s installation manual—and which may help you decide whether you’re up to the task, or if you should call a contractor to do the job. STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT First and foremost, today’s double-pane insulated windows are heavy. The larger they are, the heavier they are, and the more difficult they are to handle. Furthermore, glass is fragile and requires great care when carrying and

maneuvering a window through the home and into the rough opening. Installation often requires at least two people. Ladder work may be required. Although replacement windows can usually be installed from inside the house, the old windows might have to be removed from outside the house, which can require dangerous work from atop a ladder. Removal of the old window can be more difficult and time-consuming than you anticipate. Preparation of the rough opening and installation of window casing may require more tools, materials and skills than you expect. The replacement window’s step-by-step installation manual will be critical for any job, because window construction differs among models and manufacturers. However, the manuals generally only provide guidance when installing in “best case scenarios,” without providing solutions to the various construction difficulties that can be revealed once the old window is removed. The manuals tend to make the procedure seem simpler in theory than it actually is in practice, and that’s where pro-grade experience can pay off.

WindowFeatureEDIT.qxp_Layout 1 10/8/21 10:27 AM Page 33

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED ON THIS PROJECT I should mention that the project shown is not my first rodeo with windows. A few years ago, I replaced a few units in a brick home, but admittedly I was out of practice for this project. Back then, we replaced single-pane aluminum windows by first removing the sashes then prying the old frames from out of the surrounding brickwork. That was my plan for this project as well. However, when the Big Day arrived, I found the glass sashes of the old window to be locked inside the metal window frame. I tried and tried, but could not figure how to remove the sashes without breaking the glass, which would be a huge, dangerous mess (at a house full of children). To avoid breaking the glass, I opted to pry off the window trim and cut away the wood siding around the metal window frame. Note that I’m already reaching for a powered circular saw to remove the old window—and that’s a tool that is not mentioned in window-installation manuals. Plus, all this siding and trim demolition will require significant repair work. After I chopped away the siding, I pried out the surrounding flange nails then lifted out the old window, sashes and all. Thankfully, this was a ground-level window between a kitchen and screened porch, otherwise I’d need to do all this extra work while clinging to a ladder. Had I known that I would have to cut away the siding from around the

WINDOW REPLACEMENT: DIY OR WHY NOT? Keep in mind, the entire time the window is out, unconditioned air, dust and allergens are drafting throughout the house. You want to work as quickly as possible, and surprises such as an out-of-square opening don’t help the situation. Prior to installation, I had to fasten exterior window stops (plus shims to square up the perimeter) at the top and sides of the rough opening to prepare for the new window. The “stops” are strips of exterior molding that frame the window and literally stop it from pushing all

window, I could have ordered a new-construction window (with a nailing flange) as a replacement rather than the new pocket-style window which I had on site. (A pro installer might have determined this in advance.) Having a flanged replacement could have simplified this job, because now that the old window was out, I discovered the rough opening was not level and plumb, as required for the pocket window. The sides of the opening flared out toward the bottom and required adjustment.

34

Home Improvement and Repairs | The Fall Issue

the way through the wall when you place it inside the opening. That wasn’t the only hurdle. When I test-fitted the window, I found that the bottom of the rough opening was flat, but the bottom of the pocket replacement window was sloped to fit a sloped sill (and shed water away from the house). This was a smart window design, but to support the window, I had to cut a sloped (wedge-shaped) shim to install beneath it and provide lower support. I bevel-cut the sill board on my table saw—which is another tool not mentioned in a window-installation manual and one which not every DIY homeowner will have at their disposal. I also discovered another construction issue: The thickness of the wall was inconsistent from

WindowFeatureEDIT.qxp_Layout 1 10/8/21 10:29 AM Page 35

one side of the window to the other. This problem resulted in a 1/4-in. inconsistency with the “reveal,” which refers to the measurement of construction materials that will surround the installed window. In a nutshell, you want the surrounding wall and trim to look the same all the way around the window.

I added flashing to the bottom of the window opening. Although the window is covered by a roof, I planned to use the exterior window stool as a beverage shelf, and the flashing adds moisture protection in case of a spill. Always use a roller to press down your flashing tape. I ripped strips of stop molding on my table saw and brad-nailed them to the rough opening. Be sure the stops don't encroach more than 1/2" inside the window frame.

Here's the wedge-shaped shim block I added beneath the sloped window bottom.

WINDOW REPLACEMENT: DIY OR WHY NOT?

My workaround solution: I installed the window flush with the interior, which simplified trim installation in the kitchen. The screen-porch side of the window was trickier. The window did not sit flush on the exterior side of the wall. So, when repairing the butchered siding with a variety of trim boards (and shims), I was careful to conceal the problem with caulk and carpentry “magic.” I’m a good trim carpenter and a decent magician, but disguising this anomaly in the trim might drive some less experienced DIY’ers absolutely bonkers. So yes, a DIY’er can feasibly install their own window, but most should call a pro. You’ve been warned.

36

Home Improvement and Repairs | The Fall Issue

DON’T MESS IT UP To those ambitious homeowners who might ignore our advice to call a pro and instead charge ahead with a DIY installation: Proceed with caution. Understand that if the window is installed improperly and is not plumb, level, and square, a number of problems might occur. The double-hung or slider sash may be difficult or impossible to remove. A casement sash may not operate properly due to excessive drag on the sill. The sash pivot bar on double-hung windows could bind and cause the sash to become inoperative. Or, the weather-stripping may not seal properly— allowing air and water infiltration, even if the sash is locked. Remember that products vary by design, so all window installers—both professionals and DIY—should always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for installing their specific units. INSTALLATION TIPS AND TECHNIQUES When installing a pocket window, apply high-quality, exterior-grade sealant along the inner edge of the exterior stop molding. Liberally apply three beads of sealant to the window sill, and at the bottom corners of the rough opening.

WindowFeatureEDIT.qxp_Layout 1 10/8/21 12:09 PM Page 37

Your replacement window has to be level, plumb, and square, otherwise it won’t open or close properly, and air and water could infiltrate around the edges.

To check for square, measure both window diagonals from corner to corner to make sure they match. Adjustment can be made with shims, which should be installed at all anchor points and anywhere necessary to keep the unit correctly in place.

Check both sides for plumb and the bottom for level.

Inflatable Air Shims helped to adjust the window's fit during installation. Just slip them between the window and house frame, then pump them up or deflate them as needed to adjust the window's position.

Once you're satisfied with the window position, insert permanent wood shims at all the screw locations.

> Once the window is plumb, level and square, drive the installation screws (included with the window) into the prefabricated holes in the jamb. Don’t over-tighten, or the window might bow and not function properly. Cut the excess shim material flush with the wall. Check the sash for proper operation once the screws are in place. If there are any gaps greater than 1/8 inch between the window and house frame, loosely pack insulation in the interior. Spray foam is acceptable if the product is designated for “windows and doors,” so it won’t expand to the point that it could prevent proper operation. Reinstall new stop molding on the installation side, then caulk, trim and paint to your preference. H

New Windows Save Energy Select replacement windows with energy-efficient designs for year-round thermal performance. New windows with vacuum-sealed, double-pane glass can reduce a home’s power bill by reducing heat and cold transfer. Low-E coatings reflect infrared light to keep the heat in during the winter and outside in the summer. The term “Low E” means low emissivity. Emissivity is a property of materials such as glass, which light can freely pass through. Low E is a coating of microscopic layers of silver sandwiched between layers of antireflective metal oxide coatings. Added to the surface of window and door glass, Low E provides greater energy efficiency, increased comfort and protection from damaging UV rays. By filtering out the part of the light spectrum that transmits heat, Low E reduces a window’s U-Value and increases its R-Value. These coatings can also reduce fading in carpets, artwork and photos by helping block the damaging ultraviolet rays. Learn more about window options at Weathershield.com.

If you don’t want to splurge on a home makeover, the experts at Money.co.uk have compiled some useful tips on how you can recreate these five signature looks in your home on a budget. INDUSTRIAL Bare brick, rough textures, and solid structures sum up the ethos of the industrial look. The style aims to celebrate the modernist eye for efficiency and functionality by transforming beams, columns, pipes, ducts and flanges into the working parts of a building. The industrial look is more popular than ever with DIY decorators, and shows no signs of going anywhere. It’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re choosing a highly-desired design style you have to be prepared for a higher price tag. However, recreating this signature look doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. With a bit of ingenuity, you can pull together authentic finds, DIY projects and budget pieces to give your home the ultimate industrial look.

REMODEL WITH STYLE ON A BUDGET

Paint it black Paint anything black for an instant industrial update. Add the color to the base of an old claw-foot tub, your trim, radiators and even picture frames. Solid black a little too daring for you? Try dip-painting instead. You can use tape to block off the section of the object you want to keep paint free, and brush-on or spray paint the rest of the rustic old wood to coat it in a lick of black paint. Incorporating black on rustic old wood such as on chair or table legs are great choices to help achieve a more subtle industrial look within your home. DIY pipe bookcases Pipe fittings and wooden planks can be transformed into a rustic industrial shelving unit in as little time as a weekend. However, this sort of home project is more catered to the more advanced DIY lovers out there, so if you’re a relative beginner or novice to the world of up-cycling, it’s worth investing in some help from an experienced friend or professional. Stick with a black and gray palette One of the easiest ways to master this look is by limiting your decor to a fairly strict palette of black, grey and white, with natural, wornlooking wood incorporated in. Shop budget-friendly stores for lamps, bedding, pillows, towels and more, in shades of grey, black and white—solid hues like these generally look good at any price point, so why spend more?

Get creative with shelving Shelving units constructed from timber planks and plumbing materials are an easy way of incorporating the industrial look for less in your home. Plus, they are a great way of adding inventive storage solutions. Mix up materials and textures There is nothing flat, boring or one-dimensional about the industrial look. Adding reclaimed wood, leather, subway tile, concrete, weathered metal, old crockery and plates, and mismatched vintage cutlery to your home can all help towards achieving a vintage-warehouse-style interior. MODERN The second most commonly pinned theme was found to be modern with 478,608 boards dedicated to the ethos. These preferences amongst Pinterest users seem to indicate that clean lines, geometric form and clear open spaces are what homeowners are looking for when putting their own stamp on a property. Find good deals on new items The best way to incorporate modern pieces into your home for less involves knowing how to find a bargain. Research and become familiar with well-reviewed retailers that consistently offer durable, well-designed pieces that are also affordable for everyday customers. Add a splash of color Adding a splash of color to your home is one of the most affordable ways you can add a modern twist to your home design. The cost of wallpaint depends on the quality and brand, but if you want to brighten up the crisp clean lines of your modern decor with a stand-out feature wall, you can grab a brush and add this detail for less than $40. Add throws and pillows Accessorizing with pillows and throws is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to inject a fresh style into your living room or bedroom. Incorporating pillows and throws enables you to integrate neutral, earthy

tones, and monochromatic colors into your modern design. For example, for a modern look you should arrange your pillows in odd numbers. Add three or five pillows to your bed or sofa as in the modern aesthetic, odd numbers always look more artful. Mirrors Mirrors have a way of tricking the mind and by strategically placing them around your home, you can make any room appear bigger than it actually is. Adding large mirrors to different rooms around the home offers a budget-friendly way of adding new dimensions to an area by reflecting the room back, giving the illusion of it being more spacious. MODERN FARMHOUSE Comfy, cozy and full of welcoming charm; you don’t have to live in the countryside in order to appreciate the beauty of farmhouse decor. The key to mastering this interior style is to embrace the casual, rural, country vibe, then add in your own personal twists to create a unique and warm atmosphere that you won’t ever want to leave. The casual feel associated with modern farmhouses is popular with those looking to spruce up their homes, with 420,232 dedicated boards on Pinterest. The good news is that this popular interior theme doesn’t have to break the bank, here’s three ways you can incorporate modern farmhouse decor into your home for less:

Cover dated furniture If investing in a new lightly-colored fabric or leather furniture is out of the question, a budget friendly alternative is to use furniture covers. You can easily cover your sofa and armchairs with the more affordable slipcovers, to achieve a crisp and natural modern farmhouse look for less. Slipcovers fit snugly to your furniture and are also washable, making them the perfect solution for households with young children and pets. Bring in branches Farmhouse style is pretty neutral, and relies on natural elements like branches and wildflowers to add warmth and color. Florals are an important element to incorporate into any modern farmhouse design, otherwise your decor is at risk of appearing more contemporary than rustic. You can arrange branches and wildflowers in inexpensive vases and position them around the house on mantles, coffee tables and dining room tables to add the modern farmhouse feel to your interiors. Add wood and metal as art From charity shops to vintage shops, you can find plenty of moderately-priced pieces that can be used to create statement artwork in your home. An old wood window frame can be a perfect addition to your modern farmhouse interior in place of a painting that could cost more than double the price. Iron and metal pieces can also be sprayed in black to add contrast to the neutral and warm tones that come with the modern farmhouse aesthetic. CONTEMPORARY The contemporary style of decorating is defined by its simplicity, subtle sophistication, deliberate use of texture, and clean lines. Interiors tend to showcase space rather than objects, and this style is proving to be popular with 407,151 Pinterest boards of inspiration available to those looking to update their homes. options that you can afford without sacrificing on style is the way to go. Add a splash of vibrant color If you’re looking for a simple but cost-effective way to make your home more relaxing and contemporary, start by adding a splash of color. Vibrant colors can be incorporated into your home by simply purchasing a range of plants and flowers that can help to add bursts of targeted color within different areas of the home. Placing flowers like orchids next to heavier pieces of furniture like bookshelves or beside a coffee table is an easy and budget-friendly way to create a contemporary feel in your home. Contemporary bookshelves Adding a contemporary-look bookshelf to your living or dining room, not only gives you extra storage space but it also adds a huge amount of personality. affordable ways to blend style and functionality in your home, without losing any of its aesthetic appeal. Instead of focusing on books alone, contemporary style allows you to diversify your decor options by including plants, photos and artwork to your shelves. Lighting Taking into account how many light sources each room in your home will have is an important element when designing a contemporary feel home. The lighting you choose will need to make an impression with either pendant, sconces or table lamps. To incorporate statement lighting on a budget, you should search for bargain pieces at charity and vintage shops. Second-hand pieces can also benefit from DIY hacks such as spray painting to up-cycle the piece and create the illusion of a brand new accessory.

ECLECTIC The eclectic style is defined by interiors with not only varied styles, but also a variety of eras, color palettes, and textures, and is popular with recent home renovations, boasting 404,655 boards on Pinterest. As eclectic pieces are often collected over time they can often result in a higher price tag, but these tips can show you that eclectic design can be accomplished affordably.

Waiting for store sales at the end of each season is another great way of purchasing pieces for your home, for a much more affordable price. Mix textures Incorporating both rough and smooth textures adds interest to an interior, especially when your space has a more simple color palette.

Look for bargains Incorporating key eclectic furniture and accessories into your home can be costly, that’s why it is important to shop for unique second-hand items at charity, vintage and thrift shops. A thrift shop find can easily be updated and restored to its best by carrying out a few simple DIY jobs such as deep cleaning or painting.

HOW TO WEATHER-SEAL A DOOR By Matt Weber Conditioned air wasted through leaky doors can drive up power bills for even the most energy-efficient HVAC system. All the small gaps and unsealed joints in a leaky house can add up to the equivalent of an open window. A poor weather seal can leave a substantial gap between the door and the jamb. Can you feel a draft inside even when an exterior door is closed? A general rule of thumb: If you can see light around the edges of a closed door, you have a problem. Here are a few ways to solve that problem.

[MAKING REPAIRS]

The plastic weather-stripping had deteriorated around the exterior door shown in this article. The caulk joints surrounding the door had also begun to crack and detach. My first step was to remove the old stripping and carefully cut out the failing caulk bead with a utility knife. One trick to removing caulk: Use a razor to cut along the opposite edges of the bead. Once the bead is detached along the sides, the whole thing often pulls

out of the joint like a rope. You can cut out the leftover material with the razor. Use a paint scraper to remove any remaining film that will interfere with the adhesion of new caulk. [ADD INSULATION]

For new installations or remodels in which you can access the interior of the door frame, take the opportunity to seal any gaps in the framing with spray foam insulation. Spray foam stops air and water intrusion through the building envelope and creates a thermal break to reduce heat loss. When using spray foam to seal around windows and doors, it’s important to choose a product specifically labeled for “Doors & Windows,” which utilizes a lowexpanding foam. Standard spray foam can expand so much that it warps the jamb or frame, which can then impede the opening and closing of the door or window. A low-expanding foam will fill gaps without the problems of overexpansion. [APPLY CAULK/SEALANT]

Seal all seams and joints around the construction. The more elaborate the casing or trim is around the door, the more seams you’ll need to caulk. All these smaller gaps can allow substantial heat loss during winter, and loss of cool air during summer. Make sure to use a high-performance, exterior-grade sealant that offers reliable adhesion, flexibility and elasticity to accommodate the natural movement of construction materials as temperatures fluctuate. Remember that not all sealants are paintable, so check your product label if you plan to paint. For gaps wider than 1/4 inch, insert foam backer rod into the gap before applying the caulk. The caulk bead will have its strongest bond when tooled into an hourglass shape over the backer rod.

HOW TO WEATHER-SEAL A DOOR [INSTALL RIGID ALUMINUM WEATHER-STRIPPING]

Once the surrounding construction was sealed, I still had to deal with the gap between the jamb and the edges of the door, which measured up to 1/2 inch. This step might not be necessary if your door doesn’t have the same problem. Hardware stores sell several types of weather-stripping, but I prefer the kind with a rigid aluminum bar lined with a soft rubber gasket, called a bulb. When attached to the jamb, the bulb compresses against the closed door to prevent the passage of air and moisture. The kits include three pieces, one for the top and two for the door sides, all of which can be trimmed to size. Use a tape measure to find the length from the bottom of the door frame to the top of the jamb. Use a hacksaw to cut the aluminum and a utility knife to cut the rubber gasket. When cutting, err on the side of too long and adjust as necessary. Position the strip against the closed door. Close the door and press the weather-stripping firmly against it. Insert the screws that came with the kit through the holes in the strip and start driving them into the door frame. Don’t tighten them all the way down at this time. Leave them proud so the weather-stripping remains loose until all the screws have been started. (Note: If installing in a metal door frame, first mark the screw holes in the weather-stripping with a pencil.
