LETTER FROM MATT WEBER God has given us lemons. I'm typing this letter from my house, where I’m “selfisolating” with my family to avoid the Covid-19 superbug. Like everyone else, I’m nervous about the future and worried about my friends and relatives. I’d like to offer some words of wisdom or insight, but given the incessant media blitz, I’m afraid I have no new information or anything particularly revelatory
I'M JUST AN AVERAGE JOE WHO IS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THIS “NEW NORMAL,” AND PRAYING A LOT. PUBLISHER JEREMY HOLLINGSWORTH jeremy@HIRpub.com EDITOR-IN-CHIEF MATT WEBER matt@HIRpub.com CREATIVE DIRECTOR WESLEY GLASSCO wesley@HIRpub.com
to add to the conversation. I’m just an average joe who is trying to figure out this “new normal,” and praying a lot. I won’t claim to see a silver lining in any of this mess. The whole deal stinks. But, I’m also not the type to sit on my hands. I’ve got to keep my head down and move the ball forward at every opportunity, even if it’s just to distract myself from the next worrisome news alert. I’m stuck in the house, but I plan to stay busy. So, I’ll make lemonade from all these lemons, and I have a recipe to follow. It’s currently stuck to my fridge with a magnet, where it’s been hanging for quite a while. My wife Shanna has labeled it, “Wish List for the House” but you might also recognize its more common name--the “Honey-Do List.” My “honey” has included items such as Paint the cabinets, Trim the windows, Build patio furniture,

Install new lighting ... the list goes on. I don’t always have time at home to address these requests, but these times, they are a-changing. So, Shanna’s wish list will be my guide in the days ahead. And to be honest, in these chaotic times, it feels good to have a plan in hand. What improvements and repairs do you have planned for your time at home? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram-our handle is @HIRpub. Let’s start a conversation. We’re all in this together, and while we have some real challenges to face, we should never let ourselves get too distant. The HIR staff wishes you all the best.

NEWSWIRE GENERATION T FOR THE FUTURE Gearing up for 2020, Generation T is a movement helping fill the skilled trades gap that analysts predict will leave three million jobs open by 2028. The projected job shortage will create project delays and limit access to qualified contractors. The goal is to shift the perception of the skilled trades among younger generations by demonstrating the economic mobility and career opportunities available. Lowe’s launched the movement in 2019 alongside more than 60 industry leaders including 3M, Timberland Pro, Samsung and Bosch, and nonprofits like SkillsUSA. Last fall, at the first-ever Generation T Bunk Build at Rose Bowl Stadium, 300 students enrolled in SkillsUSA carpentry programs worked with skilled carpenters to build 100 bunk beds for the nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Through Generation T’s website, interested candidates can learn about educational opportunities and prospective entry-level jobs in skilled trades, while professional contractors and small businesses can post available jobs, programs, apprenticeships and training opportunities. STARTSMART NEWSWIRE THE HARDEST HOME CONSTRUCTION JOBS IN AMERICA
When it comes to home-improvement, what are hardest jobs to learn and master? To find out, CraftJack, an online lead-referral service, surveyed 1,609 contractors and 652 consumers, asking them to rank 32 types of contractor work. Consumers and contractors agreed roofing and demolition are the most physically demanding trades. And while contractors voted carpentry as the third-most physically demanding trade, it barely cracked the top ten for consumers.
Of course, muscle isn’t all you need on a job site. It takes many years of training and patience to fully command some trades and produce masterful work. When each survey group was asked what sort of work is most difficult to master, both consumers and contractors rated electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and cabinets/countertops as the most difficult. QUESTION: Why do deck-building instructions require fastening a ledger board’s lag bolts in a zig-zag pattern rather than a straight line?
ASK MATT QUESTION: Can I install a fan on a sloped ceiling? ANSWER: That will depend on the design of your fan and its mounting mechanism. Some fans that use the modern hanging bracket and hanger ball can be installed at a maximum angle of 15 degrees, provided the recessed outlet box is securely fastened to strong framing support, and that the opening of the mounting bracket is oriented at the top. Some fans can install on vaulted ceilings up to 35 degrees. However, if your ceiling has a pitch greater than the maximum slope the fan's in-box mounting kit can accommodate, it will need a Sloped Ceiling Adapter for proper installation. Check with the ceiling fan’s manufacturer to see if a compatible kit is available.
ANSWER: The staggered pattern of the lag-screw or through-bolt locations ensures there’s enough wood around and between the fasteners to reduce splitting the ledger board. The recommended pattern also recommends minimum and maximum distances the two rows of fasteners can be spaced apart to achieve maximum holding power while not splitting.

TOOL TECH
By Matt Weber
TABLE SAW TIPS FOR DIY'ERS
A table saw often serves as the “flag ship” tool of a home workshop. It can be used for crosscutting, miter cutting, bevel cutting, compound miter cutting, ripping, bevel ripping, rabbeting and resawing. Since the user guides the stock into the blade, rather than the blade into the stock, a table saw offers superior control and accuracy for a wide range of cutting applications. DIY'ers can check out these six handy tablesaw tips to cut with more safety and confidence than ever. Note that in the article shown, the blade gaurd is sometimes removed for the sake of photo clarity, but HIR recommends that users at home always operate a table saw using its blade guard.
COUNT ON YOUR SUPPORT
When ripping long pieces of material on a table saw, the workpiece should be always be supported from beneath after it passes the blade. Furniture and cabinet makers typically
16
Home Improvement and Repair | Issue: 03
use a stationary outfeed table for work support, but DIY'ers can rely on a foldaway roller stand to conserve space. A roller stand keeps the workpiece traveling forward smoothly and prevents it from falling off the rear of the table, which can result in blade tearout and impact damage. The height of the adjustable roller should be set at

the same level or just below the surface of the table. We purchased the fold-up model shown from Harbor Freight for less than $20. To cut sheet goods, arrange a couple of sawhorses as a makeshift outfeed table.
To make a sight guide for the kerf, position a straight edge flush alongside the saw blade, then use a fine-point pencil to mark both sides of the blade kerf on your saw table. Some manufacturers provide a small window to mark the kerf, but I recommend drawing the lines from the blade all the way to the edge of the table to provide a more useful visual reference. Some carpenters will score this line, but that can get confusing if you use a blade with a different measurement, so we stick with erasable pencil.
GRANT AN EXTENSION
Miter gauges are crucial for making crosscuts on a table saw. Most factory-supplied miter gauges, however, are too small to accurately handle workpieces longer than 2 or 3 feet
MARK THE KERF
The circular blade of a table saw doesn't cut like scissors but rather removes a line of material, and this line called the "kerf" which refers to the thickness of the saw teeth. The kerf can meaure up to 1/8 inch and should be taken into account when taking accurate measurements.

because of the workpiece's tendency to pivot on either side of the undersized gauge. The solution: Make the miter gauge larger by adding an extension. The extension shown was made from a 4-in. wide scrap of painted 1x wood trim screwed to the face of the miter gauge flush with the saw table. I first ripped 1/8 in. off one edge of the trim strip to ensure a straight line, then routed that edge with a 1/4-in. roundover bit. The router gives the bottom edge of the extension a slight bullnose so it will easily slide over the table top without catching or chattering. The length of the extension should span the majority of the workpieces you plan to cut and should reach past the blade kerf. Pass the extension over the blade and cut though it to show a

precise kerf location in the extension which can guide your production cuts. The extension not only adds stability and thus accuracy to your cross-cuts, but by backing the workpiece, it also reduces blade tear-out and splintering of the material.

TOOL TECH UNDER PRESSURE
A featherboard is a safety device that applies pressure against a workpiece, keeping it flat against the table or fence. Featherboards can very in shape and size, and you can make a simple version with your table saw. Select a straight-grained, defect-free wood board and cut a 45-degree miter on one end. On the mitered end, cut several parallel cuts in the direction of the grain to create fingers or "feathers" that flex in the direction of workpiece travel.
In any cutting operation where the blade guard must be removed because the blade won’t be cutting completely through the wood, “featherboards” should be used for addtional safety. The featherboard prevents the workpiece from being dragged backward by blade friction. Featherboards can be clamped above and to the side of the workpiece to exert pressure until the cut is complete.

TABLE SAW TIPS FOR DIY'ERS
AUXILIARY CLUB
In some cases of very narrow rips, such as less than 2 inches wide, the blade and fence can get dangerously close, impeding visibility and making it difficult to use a push stick. In such a case, you can build an L-shaped “auxiliary fence” about 5-1/2 inches wide and 12 to 22 inches long to fit your table surface. The rectangular sides must be straight and parallel. The L-shaped lip aligns with the rip fence, and

the lower side of the auxiliary fence acts as an extension of the rip fence, only with a lower profile to guide the stock by sliding beneath the guard for closer proximity to the blade.
AHH... PUSH IT
When ripping narrow stock, another useful table-saw tool is a push block. Like a push stick, it's designed to spare your fingers as you push a workpiece into the blade. A push block, however,

has a low, flat profile that can slide beneath the blade guard and a notch at its rear that catches the workpiece to push it from behind, when a normal push stick is too large to use. To make a push block, use countersunk screws to fasten a 5-in. dorsal handle in a T-shape orientation along the midpoint of the 1/2-in. thick plywood bottom, which has the 3/8-in. deep notch cut into one corner. Aside from the notch projection, the sides of the plywood bottom should be straight and parallel.

TOOL TECH NEW JOBSITE TABLE SAWS The new portable jobsite table saws are designed for DIY’ers who use a table saw for a little bit of everything, and carry it everywhere. I only have room for one large table saw in my workshop, but I also need to transport it from job to job, where I might use it to help install flooring at one house and trimwork at a different one. To make this happen, I need a quality saw with a reliable rolling stand.

the stand is sturdy, and the saw motor operates smoothly by starting with a handy paddle switch. The company earns its name from SawStop's finger-saving, flesh-sensing technology. As a stand-out safety feature, the Jobsite Pro detects contact with skin on the blade, and stops and drops the blade in less than five milliseconds. Note: We've tested this feature on a hotdog, and the wiener barely had a nick! Several key features of the SawStop’s legacy saw are included in the new model, such as a blade-lift handle with One Turn Elevation (other saws required over 25 turns), which is the snappiest way to set blade height we've ever seen on a table saw. The new model also includes a beefy T-style rip fence with push-button operation for a firm lockdown. The fence even has a

thin hidden shelf that flips out to support the end of a workpiece when the table is extended. Further upgrades of the new Jobsite Pro model include a deeper work table and an active dust-collection blade guard. The saw includes an on-tool storage cabinet, which stows away accessories including the miter gauge and push-stick right beneath the work table.

TOOL TECH A shelf for accessories is hidden beneath the work table. The downside of the Jobsite Pro is the high cost of the saw, but if it saves your fingers, it’s a bargain! One note about the safety technology: To cut electrically conductive materials without triggering the safety mechanism, the saw must be operated in “bypass” mode, which requires an extra step. So, if your work requires cutting a lot of conductive materials (including treated lumber still wet from the plant), then this saw might not be the best choice for you. Visit www.sawstop.com.

METABO HPT MULTIVOLT TABLE SAW
The new MultiVolt Table Saw arrived at HIR headquarters just in time to make this issue. The saw had been on backorder, meaning this is a very popular new tool. As far as improvements I'd like to see on future models, some solid-core wheels would be nice so I don't have to keep reinflating the tires, and I wish the under-carriage of the folded stand was more contoured to make it easier to drag over my tailgate into my truck bed. CURVES, BABY! HOW TO BEND BOARDS TO BUILD A BEAUTIFUL DECK By Kim Katwijk
The ability to bend man-made decking materials is taking builders and homeowners to new heights of imagination and creativity. All you have to do is look at the last four year’s winners of NADRA’s (North American Deck & Railing Association) national deck competition to realize curves are where it’s at. If you are a homeowner thinking of upgrading, replacing or building a new deck, you might be wondering if you can create the deck of your dreams yourself, or will you need a professional? After reading this article, you should have a pretty good idea of what it takes to create a curvy deck.
A LITERAL LEARNING CURVE—MY JOURNEY INTO BOARD BENDING
I am in my 25th year of building decks full time. With that many years of experience under my belt, I guess I qualify to fill you in on how it’s done. But first, let me confess my failures. My first attempts at board bending were with Trex decking some twenty years ago. I had built a curved Cambara wood deck for a client. The client wanted a curved railing to match, so I thought I’d try to heat and bend a Trex composite deck board as the top railing board.

s The board-bending process basically requires heating man-made decking products between two heating blankets or "skins" until they're flexible. A small probe, which is connected to the control unit, is inserted into the board’s edge to monitor its internal temperature.
The first heating apparatus I created was a 20-ft. long by 20-in. diameter Sonotube (cylindrical concrete form) laid on the flat with rebar shoved through the sides to suspend the decking. Two kerosene space heaters forced hot air into each end of the tube. This method produced uneven heating and dismal results. Next, I tried a water-bath heater using a PVC pipe cut in half lengthwise. I glued four inlets into the half-pipe, then inserted a water tank heater into each inlet. I was able to heat the water to boiling. After an hour of boiling a board, I could bend a 20-ft. composite board to a radius of about 18 feet. That’s not very good. To get the 5-ft. radius I needed, I had to rip the composite boards into three strips, heat them, bend them to a 5-ft. radius, then glue and screw them back together. It was passable.
32
Home Improvement and Repair | Issue: 03
On another project, I tried to get higher temperatures by insulating the pipe and capping it with rigid insulation. This succeeded so well, the tank melted. I gave up on bending deck boards until, at a trade show, I discovered the Heatcon bending system. Working with this system, I was able to bend a flat piece of 5-1/2-in. Azek cellular PVC decking to a radius of 22-1/2 inches. Impressive! This opened the door to new levels of artistic expression. I used Heatcon with great success for years, but when it came to bending the popular Trex Transcend capstock boards, the system would end up either not heating the core layer enough to bend, or it would melt the softer top layer and ruin the embossed grain patterns. In 2016, I was with other professional board benders at Bendfest in Seattle. The discussion turned to the problem of bending theTrex Transcend capstock. My friend, Jason Russell, brilliantly came up with the idea of using two Heatcons set at different temperatures and cross blanketing them. This just might do the trick! And yes, it worked, the downside being now you needed to buy two units instead of one. I approached Heatcon

s
To shape the boards, you’ll need to construct a shaping jig prior to heating them. Similar to a concrete form, this will be a temporary construction (usually made of wood) designed to hold the flexible board in a particular radius until it cools and becomes rigid, retaining the new shape. The board is pressed into the shaping jig and clamped or fastened as needed.
about developing a dual control unit, but that was not something they were willing to do. Two and half years later, I developed my own system, and started my own company, Inblazen—heating gear with dual-control skins. Voilà! Capstock bending problem solved!
DESIGN YOUR DREAM DECK
All good things begin with a plan. If you have a hard time seeing how something will look just from a drawing on a paper, you’ll probably want to hire a professional deck designer/builder. If you are imaginative and determined, you can design your own dream deck with the help of a good software program. Most top deck builders use Real Time Landscape Architect. At $400 for the software, it is very reasonably priced. It’s quick and easy to learn the program, and the 3D photo realistic renderings help you visualize
Which Decking Materials are Best for Bending? The array of composite and PVC boards has increased dramatically over the past twenty years. Because it’s my business, I try diligently to know the pros and cons of most of them. Any manmade decking that contains plastic can bend, but how well each of them bends is variable.

how the deck will look. (See sidebar on Designing the Whale Deck).
BENDING SYSTEMS
If you are serious about creating your own deck masterpiece, you will need a way to heat and bend the boards. To be fair and thorough, let’s look at your choices. There are three systems designed for board bending.
How tight can you bend a 5-1/2” wide board? It all depends on the makeup of he decking. The tightest that I know of is 8-1/2” inside radius in a 360° circle with ClubHouse Decking. I have independently done my own field evaluations and bend testing of numerous boards. There are some types of decking that are fine boards, but are not formulated for bending. Following is the list of boards that I have tested and which ones are suitable for bending.
CLUBHOUSE DECKING ClubHouse Decking bends easily, is dimensionally stable, and has a warranty that stays in effect even on bent boards. INTEPLAST / WOLF DECKING Inteplast and Wolf boards can be bent to an inside radius of 3’ or less. AZEK DECKING Azek decking can be bent to a radius of 4’ or less. The tightest I have achieved with Azek was a 22.5” inside radius. Boards will swell a tiny amount when heating.

HOW TO BEND BOARDS TO BUILD A BEAUTIFUL DECK
Trex Customcurve – The Box • Priced at $8,499.00 plus shipping • Includes a Forming table 4’x8’ • Able to heat two 8’ boards at the same time • Able to heat railing, decking and trim • Adjustable temperature up to 300° F • Weighs 330 lbs., 24”H x 40”W x 128”L (need a fork lift) • Operates on LP gas and 110V, 15-amp service
FORTRESS DECKING, MOISTURESHIELD Fortress and MoistureShield are capstock deck boards and bend easily to about a 6’ radius. TREX TRANSCEND DECKING Trex Transcend is a capstock product. It can be bent to an inside radius of 10’ or less. The tightest I’m aware of is an 8’ radius. This is where the InBlazen system really shines. By heating Trex face down and setting the lower skin at 200° and the top skin at 260°, Trex can be bent to under 10’ without melting and distorting the grain pattern.
HIRpub.blog | HIRpub.digital
Building with flexible boards opens a new world of design possibilities, such as curved handrails.
Having used this system, I find that 8-ft. boards are just too short. You can never use all the board, so having a joint every 7 feet is annoying. The table is nice to work with, especially when you try to bend railing. Heatcon® HC99-300 – Heat Forming Kit • $2,700.00 plus shipping for a 10’ kit • Includes 2 - 8″x10′ heating blankets
TIMBERTECH Capstock. Can be bent to 14’ radius. TRUE NORTH DECKING Capstock. Can be bent to 15’ radius. DECKORATOR Capstock. Heritage™, Vista™, and Classic™ can be bent to 15’ radius. FIBERON DECKING Capstock. Can be bent to 15’ radius. TAMKO Capstock. Can be bent to 16’ radius.
DÉCOR DECKING Cellular PVC. Usually bends easily, but when temperature is high enough to bend, the grain pattern begins to vanish. DECKORATOR EOVATION DECKING Does not bend.
(Note: If I do not mention a particular brand of decking, it is because I have not been sent any boards for evaluation. — Kim Katwijk)

• Operates on 110V, 15-amp service (option of 240 volts for worldwide use) • Weighs 25 lbs., easily carried and stored
InBlazen – Heating Gear • $2,500.00 for 10’ gear (Also comes in 12’ gear) • 2 - 8″x10′ Heating Skins • Adjustable temperature up to 350° F • Dual control (Each skin can be set to desired temperature independent of the other, specially designed with all Capstock decking in mind.) • 2 kits can bend 20’ deck boards
The basic heating method for these systems is to lay down the insulation on a flat surface like a garage floor, then lay the skin or blanket on top of the insulation, then the board face-down, then the second skin or blanket, and finish off with the second strip of insulation. This is how all bending is done. If it is wet or windy, we will put down plastic sheeting, and then fold it over the whole pile to hold in the heat and keep it dry.
Heatcon’s web page states, “Not recommended for capstock materials.”

HOW TO BEND BOARDS TO BUILD A BEAUTIFUL DECK
The bent boards can also be used for decorative inlays. Adequate framing support is required, which can be accomplished with additional blocking that supports each side of every piece (or by using a fiberglass grid).

FRAMING FOR A CURVED DECK
Want to use a bent board to trim the curved edge of a deck? Once the deck joists are in, you will put a nail in the center, attach one end of a wire to it, then attach a pencil to the other end of the wire. Use the wire like a compass to draw the curve on top of the joists. Now, you have a line to follow as you skillfully cut the joists using a chainsaw. Yep, that’s how I do it. The chainsaw will allow you to cut any angle. After cutting the joists, you need to cut blocking to install between the joists. This makes your rim. If you plan to install a ribbon to trim the outer edge of the deck, use another set of blocking to support all the board ends. All boards must be supported within 3 inches of the end.
Whether you choose to tackle the job of doing it all yourself or to find a professional who can bring your ideas to life for you, beautiful outdoor living spaces with free-flowing, curving lines are now available to homeowners around the world! Bending technology allows your imagination to flow as you think outside the box to create the thing we call a deck. H
INLAY AND PATTERNS IN THE DECK
A medallion inlay is a popular way to give your deck a custom look.
Inlays and patterns can be a lot of fun. Just remember that every piece needs adequate support beneath. This can be done with blocking to support both sides of every piece of the design, or—a slick trick to use, especially when the design has many small pieces—install a 1-in. fiberglass grid beneath the design. The grid can be obtained from McNichols Fiberglass Grating.

CONSTRUCTION SCREWS FROM U2 FASTENERS
The code-compliant Construction Structural Screws from U2 Fasteners are the next generation of fasteners that are replacing lag screws (structural and ACQ-treated lumber code-compliant in IAPMO report ER-454). The new sizes range from 3-3/8 to 6-3/4 inches. The screw’s Dome Head enhances its structural capability. The Tapper Point consists of the Cork Screw Start and Blade Cutting Thread for easy piercing to alleviate strain on the material. Underneath the screwhead, the Talon Grip holds the screw tight to prevent loosening and uses its nibs to dig into the material when countersunk. Below the smooth shank is the Reamer Thread, which enlarges the hole in the material to create a larger passage when drawing materials together, reducing tension on the screw head. When it’s time for your next home painting project, consider this advice before you ever pick up a paint brush. This article covers the basics of the job and offers insight from experienced professionals.
1 PLANNING The first step is to plan for supplies and equipment. For unpainted surfaces, plan on using a good Sealing Primer before painting. A Sealing Primer achieves the truest color for your paint and also offers stain- and odor-blocking properties. For unpainted drywall, use a PVA primer. This Polyvinyl Acetate primer helps to equalize the paper face and joint compound, so dissimilarities don’t show up as much in the paint coat. To seal wood knots, use a shellac-based primer to lock in tannin bleed. If you’re dealing with water stains, apply a waterbased, stain-blocking primer before painting (allow it to dry completely before painting). Priming may not be necessary when re-coating a previously painted surface, but it will never hurt. If you’re going to paint a darker color over a lighter one, use a tinted primer to reduce the number of paint coats required to achieve the desired color. When changing to a lighter color, a white primer can be equally important. Should you pay for “Primer and Paint” in one can? Paints that “include primer” indicates the paint can be used as primer, but if you read the fine print, you might find some surfaces still require a separate primer. In fact, these “all-in-one” products make most sense when a primer isn’t really necessary, as when painting over similar type (latex to latex) finishes that are clean, dry, dull and in sound shape. These products typically have more resin in the formula than standard paint, so they stick better but cost more. Although they may prime the surface using the same product you’ll be using for a top coat, do you really want to use your paint–which costs three times as much as a primer–as your primer?

DIY GUIDE: INTERIOR PAINTING THE BEST BRUSH
When painting with water-based or latex paints, always use a synthetic filament paint brush. China bristle paint brushes made from animal hair have traditionally been used for oil paints, but for interior house painting, oil paint is rarely used anymore, and China bristles don’t leave a good edge in latex.
LATEX- OR OIL-BASED?
For interiors, you should stick with a latexbased paint. In fact, the EPA is trying to steer the industry away from interior oil-based or “alkyd” paints due to health concerns. Waterbased paints will emit fewer chemicals and lower levels of chemical vapors than oil-based. If your project requires a hard, furniturequality finish, consider one of the new hybrid paints on the market, such as Benjamin Moore Advance, which is a waterborne alkyd paint with low-VOC even after tinting.
THE RIGHT ROLLER
Rollers are categorized by the height of the pile (aka thickness of the nap). Use a short-nap cover such as 3/8-in. for a smooth finish on interior walls. A 1/2-in. plus pile height is ideal for a stippled effect common to most home interiors. To coat rough surfaces like brick or cinder-block, use a larger nap for more efficient paint pickup and release.
SHEEN MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Choosing paint sheen should be a careful decision. Flat paints conceal imperfections in walls and other surfaces, making them a good choice for ceilings and rooms that aren’t exposed to moisture (bedrooms, living rooms). However, flat paint is more porous and prone to water spots and mildew, making it a bad choice for a bathroom or other moisture-prone areas. Each step up in sheen makes imperfections in walls and woodwork more visible. High-gloss paints highlight imperfections but they are durable and stain-resistant—and much easier to clean than paints with less gloss. High-gloss sheen is an ideal trim paint for windows, baseboards and moldings.
COLOR MAKES AN IMPACT
s For interior painting, high-quality latex paints work better than ever, while oil-based products are becoming a thing of the past. If your project requires a hard, furniture-quality finish, consider one of the new hybrid paints on the market, such as Benjamin Moore Advance, which is a waterborne alkyd paint with low-VOC.

Lightly colored ceilings and walls will make rooms look larger and more open. Want a room to look bigger? Go for cool paint colors like greens, blues and violets. If you’re going to use multiple colors in a room, use the darker color lower and the lighter color higher. With high ceilings, however, you can use bolder paint colors without feeling closed in. When making your color selection, view the options firsthand at the paint store rather than rely on a computer screen. Your best bet is to narrow down to a few selections, then apply a sample to your walls in 2- or 3-ft. testing swatches so you can make final selection in your own lighting conditions. Varying light conditions can make a dramatic difference in the way a human eye perceives a certain color.
QUANTITY AND QUALITY EQUAL COVERAGE
Calculate how much paint you’ll require based on the area of the room(s) and the

manufacturer’s coverage recommendations. A can of paint should be expected to cover no more than 400 square feet, and if it does, then you’re applying it too thin. And keep in mind that two coats perform better than one. You also get what you pay for… According to HIR‘s go-to painting expert, Ritchie Hamilton of Home Fix-Up, “If you’re paying any less than $20 a gallon, then you’re probably buying paint intended for rental units to maintain the same color. With all the extra coats the paint will require, you’ll spend more money trying to save money.”
PLAN FOR TOMORROW
For future touch-ups and repairs, use the same batch of paint and method of application that was originally used, if possible. But a can of paint won’t last forever, so keep a list of paint used for each project, including the manufacturer, color and number. Pro Tip: If you need a new batch of matching paint, purchase it from the same supplier of the original batch. Different paint suppliers
HIRpub.blog | HIRpub.digital
may have their mixing equipment calibrated differently, so to achieve the closest color match, return to the original supplier.
2 PREP WORK The key to a successful paint project is preparation, so don’t skip these steps. Clear away items that will get in the way of your prep work and painting (switch plate covers, window treatments, etc.) and store them along with their respective fasteners. Protect all interior surfaces in the room with drop cloths. Paint doesn’t stick well to dirty walls. Before your paint, you should clean the surface free of dust and debris using a dust mop. For heavy oil or smoke damage, wash with a moderate amount of soap and water then allow to dry. Surfaces with a high-gloss sheen can make it tough for the new coating to stick. Scuff-sand gloss with light sandpaper, then wipe away dust with a damp cloth and allow the surface to dry before painting.

DIY GUIDE: INTERIOR PAINTING
Spackle all damage, smooth the surface, then prime all repairs with your top-coat paint. For light-duty repairs, you can reduce sanding dust by smoothing the spackle patches with a damp, abrasive sponge.
Any imperfection you can see from five feet away in normal lighting should be scraped or spackled, then sanded. Keep in mind that vinyl spackling or lightweight joint compound used as repair filler will likely shrink as it dries and require reapplication before painting. Sand all repairs for a smooth finish, then vacuum up any dust and debris. Prime the repairs by spot-coating them with the same paint you’ll be using for the top coat. If you’re prepping a bathroom with existing mildew, apply a 3:1 mixture of water and bleach to the infected area (plus a 1-ft. margin). Allow the bleach to work for 20 minutes then rinse off with clean water. Rinse the bleach thoroughly, otherwise the bleach can leave a film on the surface that will prevent the paint from bonding.
afterward (because it’s easier to tape off the trim than to tape off the walls). Use a putty knife to smooth the tape after you apply it. Burnishing the tape will stop paint bleeding at the edges. If you have window grids, don’t worry about taping each window square; just use a razor blade to scrape away stray paint left on the glass (interiors only!). Skip the painter’s tape? Many pro painters bypass the tape to save time because over the years they’ve developed the finesse to cut in the edges of a paint project free-handed. “Cutting in” is painting a straight line that separates two colors using only the paint brush, without masking. As Hamilton of Home Fix Up, explains, “Tape still has its place, but I mainly keep it handy for tight areas.”

conditioners are available at paint stores, you might find success by thinning your latex paint with a 1:10 ratio of water to paint to improve its workability and achieve a smoother finish. You should also pre-condition your paint roller. First step: Use a strip of painter’s tape like a lint roller to remove any fuzz or loose fibers from the dry nap. Second: Dampen the roller nap before use, then spin the water out to facilitate the “paint load.” This extra step eliminates dry rolls and minimizes lint and particles that can be transferred onto the paint.

DIY GUIDE: INTERIOR PAINTING 3 APPLICATION Improper application can lead to thin spots, a blotchy finish, paint runs and even peeling top coats. Follow these tips for a pro finish.
BRUSH BASICS
When priming and/or painting walls, the first step is to paint the edges. If using painter’s tape, avoid pushing paint into the tape with the brush, which can cause the paint lines to bleed. Most professional painters cut in the edges with only a paint brush, using no tape. To do so, dip the brush only 1 to 2 inches into the paint to load it. Use the brush to draw a straight line roughly 2 inches wide to separate two paint colors—such as a wall bordering the ceiling or door casing. Begin by letting the paint brush open up into a semi-oval and bring it into the line you are cutting. Apply as little pressure to the bristles as possible. Always keep the brush fully loaded and follow the line until the paint begins to break up.
Most professional painter's "cut in" the edges of their project without the use of painters tape, which is a skill that takes practice to master.
60
Home Improvement and Repair | Issue: 03
Then repeat, working into the previously painted area. This technique is usually performed while the painter holds their breath, and it’s more difficult to get right than it sounds. Keep a damp cloth handy so you can wipe away drips and mistakes immediately before the paint dries. When cutting in a paint project, work out of a small container rather than the paint can. This reduces mess and contaminants, and helps to keep the brush loaded with only a small, workable amount of paint.
ROLL IT RIGHT
To complete the field of the wall, use a paint roller. Extension handles of varying lengths can make application by roller easier and more ergonomic. For best results, apply the paint in successive columns. With a loaded roller, proceed along the wall painting one column at a time–one stroke all the way up, another all the way down, then back up again for each column. Move on to the next column. After three columns, it’s important to back-roll the paint back into the new coating, maintaining a wet edge on the wall. It is this back-rolling technique that achieves the millage of the paint, which is the even and continuous thickness of the coating. Working back into the previously painted area will help avoid lap marks. For a seamless finish, paint one wall completely before moving on to another. Remove any painter’s tape while the paint is still wet. For further coats, reapply new tape. Allow the paint to dry before applying further coats. Keep in mind that although your paint container says the paint dries in 2 hours, that indication is for conditions of 70 degrees and 70-percent humidity. In low humidity, paint can dry in less than an hour. In high humidity, it can take a whole day. Not waiting to apply the second coat can result in peeling paint or visible brush strokes. For trim work like crown molding and baseboards, sand the surface between coats for an ultra-smooth finish. This will prevent a grainy texture and prevent any underlying paint color or sheen from showing through. Two coats of topcoat always achieve best results. All paint “covers” in one coat, but doesn’t necessarily “hide” in one coat. This
PaintingFeature_EDIT.qxp_Layout 1 3/26/20 1:12 PM Page 61
For the most thorough paint coverage and even millage, apply the paint with a roller three columns at a time, then back-roll the columns into the freshly painted area, maintaining a wet edge as you progress along the wall.

4 CLEANUP & STORAGE

During your project, wrap paintbrushes tightly in kitchen foil or cling film so air can’t get to them, and they’ll be ready for use later. After your project is over, clean your brushes with water and a “brush comb” to remove any traces of paint and align the bristles before they dry. Add a little fabric softener to your water for cleaning brushes and rollers to help release paint better than soap. Then, store your brushes in their original covers or plastic film. If you store leftover paint in a dry, temperature-controlled room, it should last until the can rusts. Avoid storing in the attic where it can get too hot or in an outdoor shed where it can freeze. Air exposure will dry out paint,
PaintingFeature_EDIT.qxp_Layout 1 3/26/20 1:16 PM Page 63
> so it might help to transfer leftover paint into a smaller container for long-term storage. After the paint project is complete, avoid washing your walls with a damp cloth until two weeks after the final coat dries. Of course, projects don’t always go as planned, and accidents can happen. There’s no point in crying over spilled latex paint. The keys to complete stain removal are speed and lots of water. As Hamilton of Home Fix Up, is fond of saying: “Dilution is the solution!” Fast blotting with an absorbent towel and repeated rinsing can work, even on carpet. Use a shop vac (with filter removed) to suction away the thinned paint and water from the spill.

ON SITE WITH EXPERT VINYL SIDING INSTALLERS By Matt Weber
Vinyl siding has a lot to offer today's homeowners in terms of design and performance. Available in a huge array of colors and textures, from traditional clapboard to the look of board-and-batten or even shake siding with complementary trim details, vinyl allows builders and architects to achieve practically any architectural style. Want a house in the Cape Cod style? French Colonial? Georgian? Queen Anne or Greek Revival? Today's vinyl siding products can make it happen. Long-term durability and minimal maintenance requirements are two more big selling points. Designed to withstand winds of 110 mph or higher, vinyl siding has multiple attachment points for superior weather protection, and advanced UV-resistant coatings resist color fading. Manufacturers generally back the siding with a lifetime warranty to the original homeowner and with a prorated warranty of at least 50 years to subsequent owners. Vinyl siding offers all this protection, and you never need to paint, stain, caulk or re-paint it.
Do heights make you nervous? This is one of many reasons a full-scale siding installation should be left to the pros. Before installing any new siding, proper flashing details must be in place to shed water from the building envelope.

The trim pieces are installed first at all wall transitions.
When it comes to choosing a home's exterior cladding, good looks and performance are critical, but so is cost. Vinyl siding outshines other siding materials when compared to the total installed cost. According to the RSMeans National Construction Estimating Software Tool, the average total installed cost per square (100 sq. ft.) is $393 for vinyl siding, $684 for fiber cement, $1,389 for wood siding, and a whopping $2,048 for brick in new construction.
INSTALLATION OVERVIEW
Vinyl siding is engineered for quick and easy installation. The material is lightweight and simple to cut, and the Vinyl Siding Institute offers a free downloadable installation manual at vinylsiding.org. A confident DIY'er could tackle a small job, such as replacing siding on a damaged wall at ground level, but larger

Furthermore, when it comes to wall transitions, flashing methods and finish details, there's a lot more to installation than simply nailing up a panel, as the expert team from Lovelady Construction show us on a job site in Hoover, Alabama. The HIR team joined the installation crew of Lovelady Construction on site, where they were kind enough to show us how they get the job done.
FASTENING
Everything depends on proper fastening of the siding. Because vinyl siding contracts and expands as the outside temperature changes, it's important not to fasten the panels tightly to the wall sheathing. When fastened loosely, the slotted holes in the nailing flange allow the panels to move freely as the temperature fluctuates. "Nailing the siding too tight is the easiest way to install it wrong," says Alvin Connell of
68
Home Improvement and Repair | Issue: 03
Lovelady Construction, who prefers to use construction staples as a fast and secure way to hang the siding. Installers should allow 1/32-in. clearance (thickness of a dime) between the fastener head and the siding panel. Connell explains that if the panels are fastened too tightly, they can buckle and deform as the temperature changes. It is important, however, that the fasteners penetrate a minimum of 1-1/4-inch into a framing stud or furring strip. Start fastening in the center of the panel and work toward the ends. To avoid buckling, the siding panels also require at least 1/4-in. clearance at all openings and stops. (When installing in temperatures below 40 degrees F, increase the clearance to 3/8 inch.) These clearance gaps are concealed inside corner trim or vinyl J-channel. J-channel is a transition strip

installed around all windows and doors prior to hanging the siding panels. The edges of adjoining siding panels insert into the channels for a clean, finished appearance. In general, vinyl siding installs from the bottom up, beginning with a starter strip (for elevated walls) or a J-channel (at floor transitions), and the siding panels follow, snapping together along the linear joints. When installing a panel, push up along its bottom edge until the lock is fully engaged with the piece below it for the full length of the panel. For horizontal panels, space fasteners a maximum of 16″ (12” for vertical panels). Check the alignment every few rows to make sure the siding is hanging straight and level. When working around windows, doors and similar obstructions, the panels must be cut to size. It is also important to use utility trim and

punch locks at certain points where a nail hem has been cut off. The Lovelady guys work in tandem, with one installer taking measurements along the wall and hanging the panels, while the cut-man uses snips to trim the panels to shape and conveys them to the installer. Careful measurement and clear communication between workers is critical. By working from the bottom up, it becomes necessary to trim off the nailing flange from the top panel, which eliminates those critical slotted holes. As a workaround, the Lovelady crew interlocks the trimmed top course to the lower course along its bottom edge, while its top edge tucks inside the trim channel along the eave. The installer then drives color-matched trim nails into the weep holes of the upper panel, which connects the two courses to each other without pinning the upper course to the sheathing.

Tight spaces such as this roof transition require careful measurement and cutting to properly install the flashing, trim and siding to protect the home.
SOFFITS

Wall and Window Flashing for Vinyl Siding
s
A code-approved flashing material should be installed around windows, doors, other openings, inside and outside corners, and the intersection of walls and roofing. The most important tip to remember when applying window flashing is that flashing should extend past the nail flanges of the window (or any accessory) to prevent water infiltration. The flashing must be long enough to direct water over the nail flange of the last full course of siding. To accomplish this, first apply the flashing on the underside of the window, then to the sides of the window (overlapping the bottom flashing), and finally, to the top of the window.

allow for expansion, then mark and cut the soffit panel to fit. Fasten at the fascia and wall through the nail flange and “V”-shaped groove, leaving space for expansion. To turn a corner, soffit panels can be mitered and supported with back-to-back J-channels. J-channel is often used to receive the edges of the soffit panels, but the Lovelady crew uses a different system, in which they bend their own L-shaped backer from aluminum coil stock. “When I shape the angle myself, it gives the soffit panels a tighter fit,” says Chip Lovelady,
who forms and cuts the aluminum material on site. “A tighter fit is a stronger installation and prevents any loose panels that might rattle in high winds.” The crew installs the house-end of the soffit panels against the aluminum, then they sandwich the panels against it using a strip of J-channel for a tight fit, and the J-channel provides trim for the top siding course. To complete the installation, the Lovelady crew uses a sheet-metal brake to form colormatched aluminum stock into a tight-fitting fascia cap that protects against roof runoff. The aluminum cap can be fastened with matching trim nails. (If necessary to face-nail the fascia, it helps to drill holes for the trim nails to allow for expansion and reduce denting the aluminum.)
The J-channel provides transition trim to conceal the edges of the top course of siding.

HOW TO REPLACE A CEILING FAN By Matt Weber
Ceiling fans improve airflow, provide a cooling breeze to a stuffy room, and I don't understand how some people fall asleep without them. During a recent ceiling remodel, the existing fan was ruled stylistically "out of date" and scheduled for replacement. We upgraded with a new Casa Vieja Terrazzo model from Lamps PLUS, which has a sleek, contemporary look, a dimmable light and remote-control operation.
REMOVE THE OLD FAN
Obligatory safety note: When working on a ceiling fan or any hard-wired electrical appliance, turn off its power at the breaker box. Test the wires to ensure the power is off, then secure the breaker box while you're working. You'll probably need a ladder to do this job.
[STEP 1]
HIRpub.blog | HIRpub.digital
Fans vary greatly by design, so the removal and replacement procedure differs somewhat among models. Yet, they all have commonalities, including a mounting bracket that attaches to the electrical box, and a canopy that encloses the wiring.
STEP 1 First step is to remove any bulbs or glassware
associated with the fan's light fixture. This prevents accidental breakage, decreases the fan's weight, and makes it a smaller, more manageable package. The glass pieces might be held by retaining screws, or they could be threaded and simply twist off the fan.
STEP 2 Next, remove the canopy. These are typically held in place with small Phillips-head

screws. The fan shown had four screws. I removed the two fixed screws, then loosened the two screws in the keyhole slots, which allowed me to twist and lower the canopy.
[STEP 4]
STEP 3 Once the wiring is exposed, I suggest that inexperienced DIY'ers snap a photo of the connections for reconnection with the new fan. Separate the wires by removing the wire nuts and untwisting the copper connections within them. Now, it's time to remove the fan body. STEP 4 The fan shown utilizes a common mounting method for modern fans. The fan has a "hanger ball" at the top of the downrod, which is a thick projection similar to the head of a nail. The tapered mounting bracket has an open slot on the side. STEP 5 To remove the fan, lift
[STEP 5]
[STEP 6]
76
Home Improvement and Repair | Issue: 03
the entire unit so the hanger ball dislodges from its nesting position, allowing you to slip it through the open slot, which frees the fan from the ceiling. You can donate the fan to a local housing charity or toss it into the garbage if it's in bad shape. But wait! Not all old fans utilize this mounting-bracket method, so be prepared for some deviations. Some older models used a metal hook on the hanger ball that supports the fan's weight by hooking over a metal loop in a ceiling plate. I've also replaced fans that connected to a ceiling bracket using a metal dowel and cotter pin. Although mounting methods vary, be prepared to carry the full weight of the fan unit once you've freed it of its mounting mechanism. The motor is the heaviest component, and depending on model might require two people to lift it down from the ceiling. You can also remove the fan blades before dismounting to lessen the

HOW TO REPLACE A CEILING FAN weight and "shrink" its size. The blades are usually fastened with screws, so simply unscrew them individually. With the fan out of the way, next step is to unscrew the mounting bracket (or ceiling plate) from the ceiling, then hopefully you're ready for new fan installation! Wait. Hit the brakes...
STEP 6
Evidently, the last person who installed a fan in this room skipped the following section of the instructions. You, however, should not. Per electrical code (and common sense), you need a stronger ceiling box to hold a heavy fan in motion than the flimsy plastic one required to hold a simple light fixture. Ever seen a wobbly fan swinging precariously from its ceiling mounting? If mounted to an old plastic box, that wobbly fan's mounting screws are probably in process stripping out of the plastic housing, so you'd better wear a helmet.
[STEP 7]
STEP 7 Since the previous fan
installer didn't heed such sound advice, I ventured into the attic to pry loose the old plastic light box from where it was nailed to the ceiling joist. This is a standard requirement when you upgrade from a light fixture to a ceiling fan. If you find yourself doing the same, first cut away any caulk or paint around the box's rim in the ceiling of the room below.
[STEP 8]
STEP 8 A ceiling fan requires a
metal ETL-listed mounting box. The fan’s outlet box must be fastened to the house framing (with the appropriate fasteners) to support the moving weight of the fan--at least 50 lbs.
STEP 9 The Raco fan box I purchased comes with an L-shaped bracket. To install, fasten the

bracket firmly into the framing using wood screws at least 1-1/2 in. long, then bolt the box into the threaded holes of the bracket. Make sure the bottom edge of the box aligns flush with the ceiling. Note: If your ideal fan location doesn't align next to a ceiling joist, you can install cross-brace 2x blocking between joists from which to hang the box, or use an adjustable metal support bar (see sidebar).
[STEP 10]
HANG THE NEW FAN
When working on a new fan, most manufacturers recommend using a handheld screwdriver rather than a powered one. This is so you don't misalign any screw threads or strip out a fastener head by using too much torque. While that makes sense, I still use a power driver because it saves time, but I set the tool to its lowest torque setting, and so should you.

shown uses a very similar mounting system as the one we removed. First, mount the hanger bracket into the new fan box using the provided hardened metal bolts.
STEP 11 Next, assemble the
fan components according to the manufacturer’s instrictions. I won't spend a great deal of time on the specifics, because assembly will vary somewhat among fan models. All fans will include a hanger mechanism, canopy,

Fan Fact: They Cool People, Not Homes Although a ceiling fan is a "cooling" device, the operation of its electrical motor actually adds a small degree of heat to the room. Ceiling fans provide evaporative cooling and aid

convective cooling, but they're only useful when they move air over someone's skin. If the airflow generated by a fan isn't hitting anyone's skin, it's only making the space warmer with no cooling benefit. So, when no one is in the room, turn off the fan to conserve energy.
What Size Fan Do You Need? If a room's longest wall is 12′ or less, use a 36″ diameter ceiling fan.
If a room's longest wall is 12′ to 15′, use a 42″ diameter ceiling fan.

HOW TO REPLACE A CEILING FAN downrod, motor, blades and usually a light. A fan's downrod is often sold in optional sizes. The downrod works double duty to support the fan's weight while also serving as a wire chase for the fan. So, if you have a high ceiling but want your fan to hang 8 feet above the floor, then you can order a longer downrod to account for ceiling height. The Casa Vieja model shown had the choice of seven downrod sizes, measuring up to 72 inches to accommodate 16-ft. ceilings.
[STEP 13]
STEP 12 Install the new fan and motor assembly, in this case by hooking the hanger ball into the registration slot of the mounting bracket. With this model, you rotate the hanger ball until the check groove drops into the slot and seats firmly. STEP 13 With the weight supported by the bracket, you're hands are now free to make the wiring connections. Always refer to the fan manufacturer’s instructions for specific wiring guidelines. For example, the fan shown included remote-control operation. This required me to connect the remote control receiver to the wiring. The receiver tucks into the mounting bracket.

will be fairly straightforward: Twist together the stripped ends of the color-matched and ground

Install a Ceiling Fan Between Joists
To hang a ceiling fan between joists, consider using a Fan Box with Support Bar. Made by companies such as Raco and Westinghouse, they support ceiling fans between structural members safely and securely where access is limited. Engineered for installation during remodeling or new construction, the mounting brace can be installed in finished ceilings through a 4-inch hole. The brace allows easy expansion, adjustable from 16 to 24 inches. The electrical box can be positioned anywhere on the bar to fit your project needs. (Photo © Hubbell Raco)

complete, cover with the canopy, which usually fastens with screws and conceals all wiring and mounting components. This fan included a stubby screwdriver that makes it easy to tighten the canopy screws situated so closely to the motor.
STEP 16 Next comes some key components--the fan blades. A screwdriver is all you need to fasten them in place.
STEP 17 Finally, install the light kit. This Casa Vieja model utilizes a dimmable LED light fixture that simply plugs together with a pushfit connection, along with a soft diffuser that screws in place.

FINAL STEP Last step is to reconnect the breaker and turn on the power. In this case, the fan's lighting and three-speed operation can be controlled by wireless remote. H
