Red Cross Volunteer from Cameron Enjoys Helping Those in Need
By Carl Manning American Red CrossAs a paramedic, Richard Doornink has the training and skills to save lives. As a Red Cross volunteer, the Cameron resident gets the chance to use his skills to help those in need, something he does because he enjoys doing it.

That’s why right now he’s at the Seven Trees Community Center in San Jose, California, serving at a Red Cross shelter for those driven from their homes by the recent massive flooding.
“We are the first line of care until the ambulance gets here. We have had to call for an ambulance several times,” Richard said, adding that the shelter averages about 125 residents each night.
Richard is part of the health care team assigned by the Red Cross to the Seven Trees shelter. It’s standard practice for the Red Cross to have health care professionals on site or on call at each of its shelters.
Richard said the team handles such things as toothaches, headaches, dehydration, nicks and cuts not requiring a hospital or urgent care. Sometimes it’s providing an ear to someone who needs to talk.
“We provide consultation for everyday guidance,” he said.
Richard, who has been a Red Cross volunteer for more than a decade, decided to become part of a health care team at shelters when he was on a state task force during an ice storm.
He said it was his first time to see what the Red Cross could do help those in need. At one location, the Red Cross assumed the operation of a shelter that had been open for about three days.
“I saw the difference the Red Cross could make in the lives of the people there,” he said.
Over the years, he has deployed many

He recalled his time at a Florida shelter after Hurricane Ian struck. He was talking to a couple in their 80s who lost their home in the storm. Sitting together on a shelter cot, they told Richard that they had a daughter in Indiana but didn’t know how they could get there.
Richard helped them book a flight at the Tampa airport since the one closer at Fort Myers still was closed. He arranged for them to get an Uber ride to Tampa to start their journey to their daughter.

Ellen Dolan Hosts
Southside Farm Club and Introduces New Member
On Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, members of Southside Farm Club began our new year at the home of our hostess of Ellen Dolan. We opened with a remembrance of Donna Christy. Donna was the friend and classmate of many of our members. Mrs. Dolan reminded us of Donna’s love, positivity, and humor in life. Fittingly the theme of our lunch was laughter. Tin cutouts of the word “laugh”, candles, and beautiful china dressed the tables and home.
After lunch, our meeting opened with a greeting from President Janice Belvel. The December 14, 2022 meeting minutes were read. Recapping the December celebration at the home of hostess Mrs. Marie Dolan we reminisced past and current holiday menus and dining traditions. A collection of $242.00 was collected and donated to Backpack Buddies.
January attendance was taken and introduced newest member Peggy Graves. The roll call question asked us to respond with “New Year Resolutions.” Many of us admitted that we don’t hold to resolutions, our goals were new objectives. New flower beds and outside renovations, decluttering, and removal of unused items topped the list for the majority. Others discussed realigning personal and work agendas and meeting deadlines.
Mrs. Dolan began the meeting program by recalling the purchase of a twenty-five dollar quilt that was larger than the scope of the room it was intended for. With intensive research, Mrs. Dolan learned she had a replica of an ap-
pliquéd biblical textile by Harriet Powers, of Athens Georgia circa 1886. Harriet Powers of African-American descent was known for her appliquéd quilts and wearable textiles such as aprons depicting representations of Fon or Kongo culture and Masonic secret societies. Mrs. Dolan’s quilt is now a permanent display piece in the basement of the relocated African Methodist Episcopal Church in Chillicothe Missouri under the ownership of the Grand River Historical Society Museum. The church with a story of its own was the first AfricanAmerican church built north of the Missouri River after the Civil War. The original quilt by Ms. Powers is displayed within the walls of The Smithsonian Institute.
Also discussed was the “stripping” quilt style of the African-American Pettway Family of Gee’s Bend Alabama. Sharecropper slaves were stranded at this secluded bend in the river because they could not afford the cost of a ferry ride across The Alabama River. Recognition came years later when representations of their work were seen hanging on a clothesline. Their story can be read online at veranda.com using the keyword search “Gee’s Bend Alabama.”
Our meeting concluded with an $89.00 donation collected for the local food pantry and club prizes distributed to recipients Peggy Graves, Hostess Gift, and Marie Dolan, Mystery Gift.
The next meeting will be on February 15, 2023, with Jackie Altenderfer as our hostess, and the location to be determined.

On December 28, Marilyn Tracy took her granddaughter, Jill of St. Joseph and Jill’s friend Craig; her great granddaughter, Devon of Aurora, CO, and her son, Steve Tracy, and his wife Mary of Trenton to the Galt Café for Christmas dinner.
Barb Harbo of Eagan, MN, came to spend January 6 – 10 with her mother, Bonna Dittberner.
Dan and Carol Wilford hosted a family Christmas on Saturday, January 21, 2023. Lisandro and Mary Gonzalez and sons, Sammy, Joshua, and Andrew of Kansas City, KS, arrived Friday evening. Other family members came on Saturday - Steve and Naomi Campbell and Halley and Dustin of Marshall in the morning and John and Ingrid Wilford of Lee’s Summit around noon. A variety of foods were served instead of the traditional turkey, ham and mashed potatoes meal. Next, came the opening of presents as everyone gathered around the kitchen table. Because of Halley Campbell’s early completion of high school, she was
given extra gifts to prepare her for leaving home, getting a job and an apartment. After that, those wanting to watch the KC Chiefs’ game gathered around the computer screen making boisterous cheering and commenting of play by play calls; all the while snacking and visiting with each other. The surprise snowfall caused the children and some adults to go outside to frolic in the lovely large flakes that peppered down on sidewalks, cars, as well as hats and noses. Each family left Saturday evening as the snow continue to fall. One incident caused a change in plans. As John and Ingrid headed west out of Trenton, his truck fishtailed and went down into a ditch on the south side of the road just past Thompson River. They were not hurt. Police and tow truck were called. Lisandro and Mary Gonzalez had chosen Hwy 65 instead of going through Trenton, but came back after hearing of John’s predicament. Lisandro took John and Ingrid all the way home to Lee’s Summit.

Young, Noble J. Young, and Myra A. Young Dual Credit Scholarship is awarded to dual credit students that fall within the NCMC 17 county service area. This one-time $324 scholarship can assist dual credit students with their tuition.
Applications are due by 4:00 pm on February 3 and should include a 300-word essay where students are asked to describe how NCMC’s dual credit courses will help assist them with their future plans
and how the scholarship will benefit them financially. “The NCMC Foundation is honored to once again offer this scholarship to our area dual credit students,” commented NCMC Foundation Executive Director Alicia Endicott.

“The Young family knew the importance of an education, and their generosity to the Foundation has created several scholarship programs to benefit all NCMC students. Being able to earn college credit while still in high school prepares students for the next step in their educational journey and lessens their financial burden after high school graduation.”

Cox Family Dentistry: Keeping the Community Smiling
Cox Family Dentistry is a fourth-generation practice that has been in Trenton for 99 years. Dr. Forrest C. Cox opened for business in 1924, Dr. F Curtis Cox joined in 1958, Dr. Paul Cox started in 1986, and was later joined by his son Andy in 2013. Cox Family Dentistry is a general practice dentistry that includes preventive care such as cleaning and checkups. They also offer restorative, orthodontic, whitening, and implant care, along with many other dental care services. They offer state-of-theart equipment and services that are up to date with current technology and techniques. They also provide dental products for area schools and donate to many local and area organizations to supply any needed items. Dr. Andy Cox said, “We always want to help people achieve their oral and health goals with a friendly atmosphere by putting the person first and listening to their concerns, and have fun working together. We also love to educate and do dental screenings for area schools and provide information and educational material.” Along with Dr. Paul and Andy, Cox Family Dentistry also provides friendly service from their caring office staff Vanessa Hamilton and Christi Tabbert, registered hygienist Courtney Bunnell, dental assistants Julia Sims and Kiersten Ferguson, and family support from Barb and Holly Cox.
Over 99 years, there have been a lot of changes in

dentistry. They went from foot pedal-powered drills to air-driven and electric handpieces and incorporated numerous improvements in the preventative and restorative side of dentistry as well. Cox Family Dentistry is always expanding its education and continuing to learn and implement new equipment, services, and techniques to help make procedures faster and more comfortable for everyone. Andy said, “We have always adapted to the changes in the desires and needs of people to provide uncompromised care for our patients; the public focus has shifted from a more problem-fixing to a preventative mindset. We have been blessed to serve and be served by this wonderful community for 99 years!”
Both Dr. Paul and Dr. Andy serve and have held officer positions on various city and community boards, including the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), school board, park board, church board, and the Riverside County Club Board. Both Paul and Andy have and currently coach several local youth teams and volunteer with the Boy Scouts. Andy went on to say, “We really enjoy getting to know people and building a relationship to better their health, lives, and community.”

Rissler Elementary Honors January Terrific Kids

Kendall Harkrider of Maryville has been selected as North Central Missouri College’s Outstanding Student for January. Kendall is a sophomore pursuing an Associate in Arts in Sports Management and will graduate with his degree in May. After graduation, Kendall plans to transfer to a four-year institution to obtain his bachelor’s in sports management and continue basketball management.
Kendall is the manager for the Pirates Basketball team and is involved in Student Support Services, Business Club and FCA. His favorite class is anything with Sarah Bird. Kendall said, “She makes it fun and not just another class. I get up, and I’m excited to go to class, not thinking I have to go. She’s also the reason I went to college. I wasn’t even sure if college was for me or if I could do it. She encouraged me to give it a try, and now I love it here and going to graduate in May.”

Kendall went on to say, “Along with being the basketball manager, my favorite thing about NCMC is how much of a home it is and that everyone cares. My instructors actually care if I succeed and are here to help you, not just give you a grade and move on. NCMC is a great place and has a good atmosphere.”

To A Degree
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at North Central Missouri College is a two-year program offering an Associate of Applied Science Degree. The program will be housed at the Savannah location once construction is complete. The degree includes classroom instruction, practice in a skills lab, and clinical experience in a variety of healthcare settings. The program offers general sonography, which consists of abdomen, vascular, and OB/GYN. You will learn both the art and the science of diagnostic imaging. The educational opportunities facilitate personal and professional development to contribute to long-term success.

To the Great Constituents of District 2, “The real things haven’t changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures; and have courage when things go wrong.” –Laura Ingalls Wilder

His speech also focused on the progress state government has made in infrastructure, workforce and education, mental health and health, government reform, and public safety. Parson prioritized major investments in infrastructure, including $250 million to continue broadband expansion

The recent announcement of tens of thousands of layoffs at the likes of Amazon, Microsoft and Google may be garnering the biggest headlines, but new government data says you’re most likely to get the can working in the arts, entertainment and recreation industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over the past year just over 3% of the total jobs in that industry were eliminated. Of course it was even worse earlier in the pandemic, when more than 8% of jobs were cut in 2020 Construction jobs are the next most risky: roughly 1.75% of those jobs were eliminated last year.
Puzzle by Jacqueline E. Mathews

“The level of job stability associated with each industry should be an important consideration for anybody entering the job market for the first time or considering a change of career ” said Outsource Accelerator founder and CEO, Derek Gallimore. The numbers reflect the average number of layoffs reported compared to the total employment in each sector in a given year.

Government jobs are the most secure Only about 0 2% of federal government jobs were eliminated last year and the rate of layoffs was also extremely low for state government and education jobs
