It was a pleasure to sit down with Adam Loosley, an Artistic Director for Disney On Ice, for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

30 | HotspotsMagazine.com

How did you get hired at Feld, and what's the best part about working for Feld Entertainment?

My history goes way back till I was 19 years old, and I started as a skater with Disney on Ice/Feld Entertainment. Working there is an education in diversity and world travel that opens your mind. After those 11 years I was able to step into a performance director role and I learned a lot about behind the scenes. Many years ago, I was a performer for Frozen, so coming back as Artistic Director is a full circle moment.

How does Artistic Director compare to being a skater?

My performance career was some of the best times of my life but as director I get to share that with new performers and make sure they have an amazing time and can embrace this experience. I get a chance to inspire and what an opportunity that is. What has been some of the favorite cities you have toured?

I absolutely love the west coast, specifically Seattle and San Diego. I also have a soft spot for New Orleans and Chicago. For foreign countries, wherever there is a beach I am in, so I must pick Thailand. Even though we are working it feels like a vacation. Are you single or dating?

I have a partner, and we live in Tampa together. We met at Disney on Ice, and we have been together for a little over a year. I am getting off the road soon so we can build a life together settled down. Being home during Covid made me realize that I want this, and I am looking forward to this new chapter.

What makes the perfect guy for you?

We both have our own careers and own lives, and we are both such independent people, but its beautiful how we enhance each other's worlds. Describe yourself in three words? Colorful, positive, and driven What does the future hold for you?

I hope more of this, I absolutely love this job. I want creative opportunities to express myself, and I also want to keep learning. Is there anything else you want to talk about? Yes, I wrote this book during the pandemic: “You Are A Great Story: Be the Author of Your Own Adventure.” It kept me artistic during a dark time. It's about my 2 nephews and my niece. A very good friend of mine did the illustrations. To find out more about the book go to: Instagram.com/youareagreatstory

Why should our readers see this tour of Disney on Ice?

It has been a bit of a wild couple years so why not spend 2 hours of absolute joy and positivity, and I promise you are going to feel happy when you leave. You will smile, you will laugh, and you will be inspired. We all deserve it! Disney on Ice is exactly what the doctor ordered.

POWER UP YOUR DAYS BY AVOIDING THESE

ENERGY DRAINING PITFALLS

It's hardly noon at work and you're already worn out. Worse yet, you've got four more hours of e-mails to answer and conference calls ahead. You're planning to hit the gym later, but how? You barely have the energy to drive home!

Constant fatigue can stem from a variety of culprits. Poor sleep, too much partying, or even more serious underlying

medical conditions like diabetes and fibromyalgia can drain your energy big time. Chronic weariness can be mental, too. Stress at work and in your relationships, depression, etc., can sap your get-up-and-go and leave you dragging and blue.

If your fatigue persists over a period of weeks, then you need to see your doctor. But there are certain energy draining enemies

38 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Power Up Your Day by Avoiding These Energy Draining Pitfalls

that you can confront right now if you want to put that tiger back into your tank!

Enemy #1: Eating a sugary, fat filled breakfast. Carbohydrate rich, fatty meals inevitably cause you to crash, leaving you tired and feeling fuzzy mentally. Instead of doughnuts, pastries, sugary cereals, and processed meats like bacon and sausage, start the day with whole grains and lean protein. Try a half cup of oatmeal with mixed berries and two poached eggs for a dynamite breakfast.

Enemy #2: Skipping your exercise routine. People who regularly complained of fatigue increased energy levels by more than 20% with regular, low-intensity exercise according to a 2008 University of Georgia study. A sedentary lifestyle at work and at home spells disaster. You don't have to live in a gym, just do something, even for as little as 10 minutes a day. Use the stairs, do push-ups on breaks, walk to lunch.

Enemy #3: Drinking too much caffeine. 1-2 cups of coffee per day will no doubt give you that needed zap of energy. A cup of coffee even makes a fantastic preworkout beverage. But any more than that

will keep you awake at night. Coffee also over-stimulates the production of two hormones-adrenalin and cortisol- that can work against you, causing you to be cranky and store more fat. Try drinking more water or replace coffee with green tea.

Enemy #4: Eating the wrong snacks. Stay away from sugary vending machine staples like cookies and candy. Avoid sugary hienergy drinks. These foods cause a sudden spike of energy as your blood sugar rises, then a crash as your body must over produce insulin to help your system deal with the excess sugar. Instead, try high fiber, protein snacks like a slice of turkey, edamame, or nuts like pistachios, almonds, or walnuts.

Enemy #5: Feeling too stressed. Your brain doesn't distinguish between the anxiety of dealing with a bitchy boss or being chased by a rabid dog. Either way, the body releases “fight or flight” hormones that help you cope with stress. The trouble is the build-up of heavy duty hormones can wreak havoc on your body. Besides wrinkles and fatigue, you can eventually expect a whole array of problems like heart disease, ulcers, and diabetes. Be proactive and creative when handling stress. Try yoga, visit a spa, learn to meditate, take a walk, go f or a swim, have more sex.

Act Courtney Act Spills Delicious Tea in New Memoir

Behind Courtney Act's rise to global fame is a story of searching for and finding oneself. Her new memoir, Caught in the Act, is a hilarious, often scandalous, and at times heartbreaking, peek into her journey towards understanding gender, sexuality and identity.

Courtney writes about growing up in the 80s and 90s and how her adolescent angst was pitted against the love of her traditionally wholesome parents. She shares tales of the thrill in discovering drag and digs into the seedier side of her adventures including dabbling in meth and engaging in multiple sexual encounters with a broad spectrum of sexualities and genders.

There's lots of Drag Race tea spilled, too; like her shaky introduction to Adore Delano and oh, the time RuPaul blocked her on Twitter. We caught up with Courtney from her home in Sydney, Australia.

It is often said that writing a memoir is therapy for the author. How true is that?

Courtney Act: Oh yes, writing Caught in the Act was the deepest childhood regression therapy ever! For over a year, I sat immersed in remembering and writing about the most informative events of my life. It was incredibly cathartic. Reflecting on old memories helped to bring a better understanding of many of the incidents… but with an adult perspective.

Like when you recount the handsome, blond high school senior boy that stopped the kids from bullying you?

I didn't realize the impact that moment had on my life until writing the book! His standing up for me in my time of need was often a memory that circled around in my brain but only popped up every once in a while. I'm surprised he made it into the book, honestly, but it proves how impactful that young boy's act of kindness was to me. What did you learn about yourself from writing Caught in the Act?

When I was younger, I was intoxicated by the idea of fame and notoriety. It filled a void for my insecurity and shame and my unexamined feelings of gender, sexuality and identity. As I have matured, I have turned more outward and have begun to focus on how I can be of service to the world and improve the lives of others. I want to be that handsome blonde high school senior that stood up for young me. I have come to learn that empathy does not come from understanding someone else's story and experience. It comes from

“...I had a similar journey with understanding my own gender, sexuality and identity. Initially, the labels I adopted helped me to find a place that felt most right for me.”

not being able to understand but still believing what someone tells you. Real allyship is caring for people outside of your bubble.

It's incredible that a young kid was able to make such an impact on someone's life. And that he understood something that it took me thirty years to learn. Some never learn. Some never will, sadly. I had a similar journey with understanding my own gender, sexuality and identity. Initially, the labels I adopted helped me to find a place that felt most right for me. However, those labels began to feel limiting. I came to understand that labels can't describe every human experience. Whichever way my gender, sexuality and identity exp ress itself at a particular time is me at that moment, and it's correct. Has being a celebrity helped or made the process more difficult?

Being in the public eye is not something I would wish on anyone unless they have a dream of being something bigger than themselves. Like, as Courtney Act, I want a band and sequenced costumes and dancers… and all that cost a lot of money! You need a big auditorium filled with people to pay for that shit. So, the loss of anonymity is worth it for me. But whenever I see someone going on one of the reality shows with no purpose except to be famous, I always want to tell them 'Don't do it! It's not worth it!' There are better ways than fame to find happiness and contentment. Invest in friends and family and find real purpose. What have you gained from reality TV fame?

I have a lot to be thankful for. My friendships with Bianca, Adore and Darienee on Drag Race. I love them. Also, winning Celebrity Big Brother was so epic and life changing. The Drag Race phenomenon has really exploded over the years. Has it gotten to be too much?

The Drag Race universe has expanded beyond anyone's wildest expectations. It can be hard to keep up with these days! But truthfully, I hope it gets even

bigger! I still love watching the shows though I tend to focus on the OG series, All Stars and of course Downunder.

What are you most nervous about people discovering in Caught in the Act?

I don't know if I am nervous, but I'm interested to see what the fans do with all the behind the scenes Drag Race stories. Has RuPaul unblocked you yet? Yes, RuPaul has unblocked me. Is it true that you battled your own identity crisis?

“The struggle to understand who I am beyond the status quo has been one of the greatest gifts of my life.”

At one time, I was actually quite competitive with "Courtney Act". The struggle to understand who I am beyond the status quo has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. What do you hope fans take away from reading your book? I hope they feel inspired to radically express themselves. Do you have advice for anyone considering a career in drag?

Do drag because you have a passion for it, because it's art, and because you crave a new creative expression. And have fun with it. What is the worst part of doing drag? The physical pain of it all. As I grow older, I'm working hard to mitigate the corsetry and prolonged heel wearing.

What is the best part of drag?

Taking drag off is one of the best parts of getting into drag. But that's not a real answer. The real answer would be having a platform to change people's minds. What is your favorite song to perform drag to? “I Touch Myself” by the Divinyls.

Which celebrity would you most like to slide into your DMs? Lil Nas X. CAUGHT IN THE ACT: A MEMOIR By Shane Jenek AKA Courtney Act is available now, wherever books are sold, through Pantera Press. Photo By Magnus Hastings

production, too. It's currently shooting in New York, but plot details are currently top secret. Stay tuned.

The 'American Horror Story' cast is more queer than ever

Season 11 of “American Horror Story” is on the way, and the roster of stars is quite satisfyingly queer. Zachary Quinto is back for another round; Russell Tovey will make his “AHS” debut; Joe Mantello and Charlie Carver, from 2018's Broadway revival of “Boys in the Band,” and Isaac Cole Powell from “West Side

Story” are also along for the ride; “Pose” co-star and all-around comedy legend Sandra Bernhard is confirmed, even though Sarah Paulson, an “AHS” vet, has not yet made it clear if she'll be returning or not. And finally, queeradjacent Broadway royalty Patti LuPone is set to make her mark on the

Jason Isaacs takes the lead in Cary Grant biopic The Cary Grant biopic, a fourpart limited series currently in production from screenwriter Jeff Pope (“Philomena”) and starring Jason Isaacs, is called “Archie.” Confused? Well, young person, Cary Grant was a huge movie star in the Golden Age of Hollywood during the 20th century and his real name was Archibald Leach. The handsome young man arrived in Los Angeles, secured a studio contract, a name change, a “bachelor roommate” situation with fellow movie star Randolph Scott (and before him costume design legend OrryKelly), and then a series of wives. As the public image was constructed, Grant's star

rose, and the rest is public history. Will “Archie” lean into or out of the private and unconfirmed biographical details of Grant's life? Who knows, but it is confirmed that the series will deal with his impoverished childhood in England, and his last marriage to actress Dyan Cannon. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess, but queer history has always been about reading between the lines of the official story.

Hari Nef to star in Candy Darling biopic Rising transgender star Hari Nef, making memorable turns in “And Just Like That…” and “Transparent,” is moving forward to a starring role in the upcoming Candy Darling biopic. “Transparent” writer Stephanie Kornick is behind the script detailing the career of the trans pioneer, who left Long Island behind for Manhattan and a life as one of Andy Warhol's group of “superstars.” She appeared in the Warholproduced films “Flesh” and “Women in Revolt” – in addition to the cult queer

exploitation flick “Some of My Best Friends Are” – and was the subject of the Velvet Underground song “Candy Says” as well as a figure in Patti Smith's memoir, “Just Kids.” In other words, a short but shining life and an important part of queer cultural history. A film like this has the potential to be not just a gift to queer viewers but a chance to bring Nef's star power to a wider audience. More news on this one when a title, director and more cast are announced.

Matt Rogers of 'Fire Island' will gift us with his own

Christmas special Haven't listened to “Las Culturistas,” Matt Rogers' wild, extremely gay podcast with Bowen Yang? Or watched Rogers steal scenes in “Fire Island”? Or caught up to the hilarious Vanessa Bayer sitcom “I Love That For You”? Well, then, correct those errors, please, because the comic actor/writer/everything is no longer up and coming — he's here and doing it. And word is that casting notices have gone up on Backstage.com for a filmed version of his stage show, “Have You Heard of Christmas?” The concept involves Rogers performing a holiday album of original songs with special guests — one of those casting notices is for a Mariah Carey lookalike — and deranged Christmas cheer. There's no official word yet on when the special will drop, on which platform it'll appear, or which surprise comedy guests will collaborate, but we're already living for this unexpected and queerly cozy holiday news.

Romeo San Vicente will watch any Christmas special any day of the year.

Tuc Watkins on Queer TV, Then & Now

Tuc Watkins hasn't just seen how gay relationships have evolved on television — he's been a part of that evolution. On “Desperate Housewives,” Watkins portrayed one half of gay couple Bob and Lee, who became residents of Wisteria Lane in 2007.

The

“Desperate Housewives” star uncouples

from Neil Patrick Harris in a new Netflix series

But the 55-year-old actor has actually been playing gay characters since the 1990s, when he portrayed the boyfriend to Alexis Arquette's character in the 1997 indie rom-com “I Think I Do.” In 1999, he took on the satirical Showtime comedy-drama “Beggars and Choosers,” which ran for 42 episodes. In the show, Watkin's character, Malcolm Laffley, came out of the closet after being accused of sexual harassment by a woman.

Now, as Colin, he returns to a different kind of queer culture in the Netflix series “Uncoupled,” where PrEP and sending butthole pics on Grindr are the norm and, most importantly, LGBTQ+ characters aren't just mere

84 | HotspotsMagazine.com

accessories but full-on leads. In other words, as Colin breaks it off with Michael (Neil Patrick Harris), they don't get to just watch the drama unfold — they _are_ the drama.

Watkins, of course, is no stranger to the kind of heightened emotional spectacle that lives most commonly within the TV world. Beginning in 1994, the Kansas City native spent nearly 20 years on “One Live to Life.” More recently, he played Hank in the 2018 Broadway revival of “The Boys in the Band” and the 2020 Netflix film, which featured the same Broadway cast, including Watkins' partner Andrew Rannells.

Recently, Watkins reflected on his firsthand experiences of playing gay roles, how it took 30 years for him to star in a Darren Star (“Sex and the City,” “90210”) project, and the crazy thing he learned that Neil Patrick Harris can do with his tears.

A gay man being in a bubble after being in a relationship for so long, which is the concept for “Uncoupled” — has that ever been you, where you get back out into the gay world and you're like, "Wow, gay people have changed"?

Unfortunately, I have experience in this arena. I've had four significant, intimate relationships in my life, and I've been dumped in 50% of those relationships. The reason I think that those two guys dumped me is because they are morons. I am kind and fun and a 100% a ll-around, wonderful guy. I got back together with those two

guys to prove that to them and then we broke up again. Yes. I've experienced singledom in midlife and it stinks. Of course, it stinks. You think it might be fun. "Oh, I get to go on the apps, so I get to date around. I get to try all these things that my friends have been trying." Most of that stuff is more fun in theory.

You're right because there's a big learning curve here, as Michael realizes in “Uncoupled.”

I imagine straight people also have to deal with some kind of cultural curve after their breakups.

Breakups don't choose a sexuality to be more horrible to. They're bad to everybody. I think what is unique about “Uncoupled,” is it wasn't that long ago that we were celebrating gay marriage, but what comes with gay marriage? Gay divorce, and so there's two sides to that coin. To reflect what it's like to be single and gay in midlife in an urban environment is not something that we've explored a lot. In the hands of [creators] Jeff Richmond and Darren Star, breaking up stinks when it happens to you. But when it happens to someone else, it's funny.

Speaking of gay men in relationships on TV, I was thinking about Bob and Lee in “Desperate Housewives” and reflecting on whether a shift has happened in how gay or queer men in relationships are portrayed. Have you seen a shift between being an actor on that show and, years later, on “Uncoupled”?

HotspotsMagazine.com | 85

Well, I think that's a really good observation because there has been a shift. When Kevin Rahm and I played the gay couple on “Desperate Housewives,” it was about the same time that Jesse Tyler and Eric [Stonestreet] were playing the gay couple over on “Modern Family.” But what was notable about those two things is that there was a gay couple on those shows. And what I think has happened since is, you've got a show like “Uncoupled,” where it's full of characters from the LGBT community. It's not just the gay couple who have to represent what a gay couple is. You've got different stripes from a very colorful tapestry. I don't feel like we have to show up and feel like we're representing what being a gay person means. Because as we all know, there's a huge spectrum, and that spectrum is now starting to be reflected in the programming that we have.

I don't remember in “Desperate Housewives” how many love scenes you had with Kevin. But I do know that “Modern Family” got a lot of flack for not allowing its gay couple to kiss.

I think Kevin and I got married on that show. And if I remember correctly, there was a kiss in the script and it was cut, either by the time we shot it or the time that we aired it. Now to their credit, later, we had a very passionate kiss in another episode, but the fact that it

was an issue… It probably went through several committees at the network: “Should they or should they not?” And if you watch “Uncoupled,” there's a lot more than kissing. I'm no prude, but it gets pretty… in there.

The show opens up with you two in bed. It does. In fact, in the script, it was more graphic. What made it into the episode was a little bit tamer, but we are pushing that envelope in scripts and what we shoot. And maybe it doesn't always make it to screen, but we are headed in that direction. I think that's a great thing. It's just more representative of who we are as a community.

What was the conversation around the scene that was cut and the one that inevitably made it on screen?

I was not part of that conversation. I was in the scene, and Neil and I did the scene together. That scene in bed initially was a scene [that] was more graphic in a funny way, but in a very real way. I think they actually made a good choice in toning that down a little bit, because I think it may have set the series off on the wrong foot. The first 30 seconds are very indicative of the tone of a show. I think it would've been a good spice to the show, but maybe not in the first 30 seconds. [In a separate interview, Star said, “We wanted to emphasize the intimacy of their relationship and not the sexuality of their relationship. For the first 30 seconds of a show that nobody knows what it's about, it felt like it was kind of creating almost a false impression of the story we wanted to tell about who these two people were.]

86 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Did you audition for the role?

Well, I've been trying to work with Darren Star ever since he did not cast me in the pilot of “Melrose Place.” I reminded him of that when we started working together. I schemed and plotted and made very fast work of forcing him to cast me almost a half century later.

What happened with “Melrose Place”?

Well, I auditioned for the gay guy, and he hired that knucklehead, Doug Savant, instead of me. Doug and I later became friends on “Desperate Housewives.” He's one of the nicest guys in the world, which made it even worse that Doug got the job because a nice guy succeeded. There's nothing worse than a nice guy succeeding. You stick around long enough, everything comes around. So it took a while, but I got to work with Darren after all. So what was it like to be a part of the Darrenverse?

What I like about Darren shows is they're aspirational. By way of example, I was in a relationship with a guy and I had the opportunity to move to New York a number of years ago, and he didn't want to move to New York. I made him watch “Sex and the City” because who doesn't want to live in Darren Star's New York City? I made him watch that and sure enough, it worked and

he moved to New York with me. I think [Darren] creates a world that we want to live in. “Desperate Housewives” was also a world like, "Who doesn't want to live on that street? It looks so inviting." In fact, I tried to mail a letter in the mailbox one day and the prop guy said, "What are you doing? That's a prop." You forget that you're on a set.

For “Uncoupled,” what was it like building an onscreen romantic relationship with Neil, and how much did you know each other before you started shooting?

Neil and I had never met. I quickly learned that Neil is like a surgeon when it comes to his acting style. He knows what needs to be done and he executes it. He knows where the joke is, he doesn't do too much. He doesn't do too little. And, well, he's a magician, isn't he? In real life, he's a magician. He's got a tattoo of a magic trick on his shoulder. One of the magic tricks that I saw him perform was, he has to do some pretty emotional, heavy lifting in some scenes that he and I do. When he was shot in profile, he cried from the eye that was on camera. But he reserved the tears in the eye that the camera couldn't see, in case there was coverage coming up that he might need to use that eye. Now, that is a real technical, magical actor at work.

HotspotsMagazine.com | 87

I didn't even know that was scientifically possible.

Well, he's got a real facility to his instrument, you could say.

You have appeared in some of my favorite shows throughout the years, including “Six Feet Under” and “The Other Two.” I was surprised to find out that you were in “Silk Stalkings,” the show I watched and shouldn't have as a teenager.

I think Rick Springfield beat me up in “Silk Stalkings.” I was beat up by Rick Springfield. What does that do for your ego to be beat up by Rick Springfield?

If you're going to be on “Silk Stalkings,” you might as well. Yeah. Might as well get beat up by Rick Springfield.

Growing up, what was the moment in your life where you knew you wanted to be an actor? I remember in high school, I went to see a production of “Cyrano de Bergerac” at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. There was a moment where the stage went dark, and it came right back on and a huge tree branch had come out from under the proscenium. The actors took their cues off of individual leaves that fell off of that branch. I remember thinking, “That is so cool, I want to do cool stuff like that.” I think I was more interested in the magic and the tricks.

The first musical I ever saw was “The Music Man” with Tony Randall at Starlight Theater in Kansas City, and I was just a kid. I remember that at the end of one of his big musical numbers, Tony Randall climbs to the center of this red, Japanese bridge. One of those short but highly arched, red bridges.

He throws out his arms and it's a big musical number that ends. My takeaway was: “That's not a real bridge. That's a bridge on a stage, and that's cool. I want to do that.” My entrance to being an actor was for all the tricks and the fun stuff.

Now that you've been doing this for quite some time, have you pulled off the kind of magic you dreamed about as a kid?

Well, I used to think as an actor, I wanted to ride a horse, shoot a gun and get killed. I got to do all three of those things in “The Mummy,” 20 years ago. So maybe I should have just retired at that point. It's all downhill after you get to ride a horse, shoot a gun and get killed. And of course, Rick Springfield. Yes. Well, that was a departure.

Dear Andreus, I have been long-distance dating someone for about 4 months now. We talk every day, and he has even expressed an interest in moving to my area so that we can take things up a notch. About two weeks ago, he says to me that he was starting to talk to someone in his area, so I backed off. Now he comes back and says that the guy was not what he expected, and he hopes that we can pick up where we left off. Even though I really like him, I don't know how to feel about this. What are your thoughts?

Sincerely, Jacob L. Dear Jacob, NO, NO, NO. My response to this is absolutely NOT! Basically, you guys had something going on, and clearly it was becoming serious if he was talking about moving. Then suddenly you are put on hold for someone else. Clearly, you are not a priority. From my perspective, it is unacceptable to for him to behave this way and then come back as if nothing ever happened. This is a red flag, and an indication of questionable behavior that would likely repeat itself. Suppose he were to move, and you get deeply involved in a relationship. Who's to say that he would not put you on hold because he met someone else, and then try to come back again. That sounds like the perfect recipe for cheating. Save yourself the trouble and run!

Dear Andreus, I have a roommate, a friend who moved in with me. We get along

great, and I really like him as a person. He recently started dating someone, and it has gotten very serious. They are pretty much together every day. The issue for me, is that his boyfriend is at my place all the time. It is so much so, that I feel like I am a guest. I have tried to make subtle hints, such as him visiting his boyfriend's place sometime, but he says that his boyfriend prefers visiting him. I am afraid that this is going to put a terrible strain on our friendship. I used to share food and everything with my roommate, and now I am hiding things, because he is sharing everything with his boyfriend. I don't know what to do now.

Sincerely, Antonio R. Dear Antonio, Looks like you are going to have to have a serious conversation. If not, this is eventually going to come to a boiling point, and it may not turn out w ell. There should have been ground rules established when your friend moved in. It seems that you are a very private or at least space-conscious, and you are feeling trapped. Express to your friend how you feel, and maybe suggest less frequent visits or maybe the two of them doing things outside of your place more. I had a similar situation before, and it is difficult when you almost feel like you are living with a couple. The only thing you can do is talk about it, and if that does not go over well – then maybe your friend might do better in his own place. There should always be a respect for space and boundaries when living with others, but in the future, you may want to establish that from the start.
