Tourism Chief: Egypt “will return to normality” by end of 2015

Chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Authority, Samy Mahmoud

Egypt ended last year with a positive balance and therefore expects “the Land of the Pharaohs” to become once again one of the most visited places in the world by the end of 2015. “If we continue on the path we have started we will return to normality in the sector by the end of the year,” declared the chairman of the Egyptian

Baron Empain Palace

The Baron Empain Palace (“Qasr el Baron”, or The Palais Hindou) is a distinctive and historic mansion in Heliopolis, a suburb northeast of central Cairo. The palace was built towards the end of the nineteenth century by the millionaire Belgian industrialist, amateur Egyptologist and founder of Heliopolis Edouard Louis Joseph, Baron Empain. Empain had made his fortune building railway lines in Belgium and France, and had masterminded the construction of the Paris Metro. In 1904, he travelled to Egypt to try and salvage a contract for one of his companies to build a railway line. The contract was lost but the Baron stayed on. The following year Empain bought a large stretch of desert from the British colonial government. On this he began the construction of Heliopolis, ‘a city of luxury and leisure’. At the centre would stand the Baron’s own grand residence. The palace was designed by French architect Alexandre Marcel and decorated by Georges-Louis Claude. Inspired by the Angkor Wat in Cambodia, it was built between 1907 and 1911, in reinforced concrete.

Tourism Authority, Samy Mahmoud, at a press conference. According to Mahmoud, there was a 4.4 % increase in tourist arrivals, which means that nearly 10 million people visited the country last year. In Egypt where tourism accounts for 11.3 % of Gross Domestic Product, restoring tourist confidence is crucial after the decline experienced by the sector following the 2011 revolution. The official stressed that Egypt is a safe country where tourists can have a good time with no need to worry. “The Egyptian Government cares about each tourist visiting the country,” he stated. “Currently we have high security systems with cameras and police officers who control all the

tourist areas, so there is no need to worry,” he explained. Although he acknowledged that they are indeed facing “some problems” in Cairo, the tourism chief said that the jihadi terrorist attacks in France have shown that nowhere in the world is absolutely safe. The Cairo Airport reinforced its security measures after finding two explosive devices in airport terminals last week. No one was arrested. “There is great improvement in the situation at the borders. We have security challenges, we have economic challenges but we have the will of the Egyptian people and the Egyptian leadership in moving forward,” he

explained. “The situation is much better than it looks,” he repeated, and to prove it, although he admitted they are still working towards the recovery of cultural tourism, today hotels in the coastal area – Egypt’s sun and beach tourism – are reporting 80% occupancy. Mahmoud also announced that five direct flights from China will start operating under an agreement that will result in 700,000 more visits annually for Egypt’s tourism recovery. This agreement is in addition to the one signed with Spanish operators who, as of March 21 this year, will resume direct flights from Madrid to Aswan, as well as Nile cruises.

Faces of India

India was the mother of our race and mother of Europe’s languages. She was the mother of our philosophy, mother through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics, mother through Buddha, of the ideals embodied in Christianity, mother through village communities of self-government and democracy. Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all.

It is not true that we only saw and sensed love in the faithful demonstration around his body when thousands went to witness the moments of separation, love has always been inherent in our star warm feelings throughout his career until his farewell at dawn. Why he choose dawn? I imagine it is his desire to embrace the virginity of life even if he didn’t precept, always through many details and special experiences I find that the will of the deceased embodied in us and carry out their wishes, even it is not registered. Was Khalid’s desire to move from Aswan to reach Cairo to say goodbye after dawn prayers. Do they feel after leaving? Often I asked this when I lose a dear one? I am

convinced that they remain in contact, but by other means they send codes to communicate with us. He is an artist of sparkles and I imagine he would continue to send them from the other world. Khaled Saleh is the brightest of his generation, since the end of the nineties he was the intimacy and will remain also the title with the passage of time. He is one of those who God gives an exceptional talent with a creative message that he sends to people to live after us, he has achieved his mission until the final scene. Egypt Economic Development Conference (EEDC)

Prime Minister of Egypt, Ibrahim Mahlab, Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. Naglaa El Ehwany, Minister of Investment, Ashraf Salman & Minister of Finance, Hany Kadry The Prime Minister of Egypt, Ibrahim Mahlab, alongside the Minister of Investment, Ashraf Salman, and the Minster of International Cooperation, Dr. Naglaa El Ehwany, have announced significant progress with preparations for the landmark Egypt Economic Development Conference (EEDC), which will be hosted by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on 13-15 March in Sharm el-Sheikh. The ministers announced the additions of Unilever CEO Paul Polman; World Bank President Jim Yong Kim; and Citigroup Vice Chairman of Corporate and Investment Banking Peter Orszag, among others, to an already impressive speaker list for the EEDC, which includes top leaders from Egypt and beyond. The press conference followed an important meeting of the steering committee responsible for supporting the EEDC, which includes: Prime Minister Mahlab, Egyptian ministers including the Minister of Finance, Hany Kadry, the Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. Naglaa El Ehwany, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour, the Saudi Arabian Minister of Finance, Dr. Ibrahim Al Assaf and the UAE Minister of State, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber. The continued leadership of the steering committee demonstrates the regional and international commitment to the conference’s success and long-term impact. “The conference is due to take place as planned; my colleagues in the Cabinet and I have recently been to Sharm El-Sheikh and we are pleased to announce that preparations are underway to make this conference a success and we are confidently on the way to building a new Egypt with the support of our development partners,” said Prime Minister Mahlab.

The ministers also announced an impressive number of responses from the delegates the EEDC has invited to the high-profile event and highlighted the global media campaign, “Egypt the Future”, which is receiving attention in international markets throughout the world, including, most recently, at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos. “Around 14 local investment banks are studying 40 investment opportunities to short list projects that are ready to present to investors at the EEDC. Of these projects, at least 15-20 projects are expected to be viable, bankable, projects that will be presented at the conference to global investors, with the remainder being offered in the following months to investors,” indicated Minister of Investment, Ashraf Salman. The Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. El Ehwany, presented details of the conference preparations indicating that “attendees will hear first-hand from the Egyptian government about its medium-term macroeconomic policy framework, how it will reform sectors with the highest economic potential, as well as learn about specific investment opportunities open to international investors. President El-Sisi will also conduct one-on-one meetings with political and business leaders throughout the conference.” “We have said many times before how vital we in the Egyptian government perceive this conference to be for the future of the Egyptian people, for the stability of the region and, hence, for the stability of the world,” said Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. Naglaa El Ehwany. “This conference does not stand alone, but is a cornerstone of the government’s economic reform program.”

“The objective of the conference is to tell Egypt’s new story, that the country is on a new track. The government is fundamentally changing how the government operates in the economy and works with the private sector, while developing its human capital and supporting the less privileged segments of society to graduate to higher income levels. Getting this message across to the world and changing the investment scene in Egypt, through presentation of the new macro and sectoral strategies and investment opportunities is what will make this conference a success”, emphasized El Ehwany.

7

Conference participants, including the announced speakers, will contribute to a wide-ranging and varied agenda of talks, in its final stages of preparation, over the three-day conference. Following a welcoming address by His Excellency President El-Sisi, speakers will discuss the future of Egypt’s economy and the opportunities available for investment. Topics will include: The Strategic Vision for Egypt, Egypt’s Energy Equation, The Innovation Imperative, Jobs for Egypt, the Suez Canal Development Project, Social Inclusion and Financial Markets. EXCLUSIVE: AFCON winner Herve Renard interested in Egypt post

the post. We have already negotiated with Renard, reaching agreements regarding his financial demands and his staff,” he said in televised comments.

Two-time Africa Cup of Nations , (AFCON) winner Herve Renard in Egypt’s vacant national team manager position. Now I have a contract with Ivory Coast and I am focused with the Elephants, but later if [Egypt] offers me a deal I will think about that because Egypt is a very big team and I would like to lead them,” the Frenchman, who led Ivory Coast to its second-ever AFCON title earlier in the month, told Radio Monte Carlo. However, Renard also suggested that the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) hasn’t yet contacted him regarding the post. “None of the Egyptian officials talked to me to take the job,” he said. Renard’s comments seem to contradict those made by EFA board member Mahmoud El-Shamy earlier in the week. While El-Shamy confirmed Renard as a favorite for the job along with Belgian George Leekens, he says the EFA has already been in contact with the 46 year-old. “Renard is believed to be leaving Ivory Coast and Leekens won’t continue with Tunisia. Both are the favorites for

“The next Egyptian coach will be a foreigner, I swear. The Association will announce his name before February 28,” he added. Renard first rose to prominence after leading Zambia to its first-ever AFCON title in 2012. The Pharaohs have been without a manager since sacking Shawky Gharib in November. Gharib presided over a two-win, four-loss campaign in AFCON 2015 qualifying which resulted in the team’s third successive failure to reach the finals. The EFA has made several promises of high-profile managers for the Pharaohs over the years but failed to deliver each time, typically settling for less-costly, less-qualified options. In 2004, the last time it promised a proven foreign commodity, the EFA settled for former Italian international footballer Marco Tardelli. The EFA also suggested it would go after a successful international manager in 2002, following the resignation of legendary Egyptian coach Mahmoud El-Gohary. The late Bruno Metsu, fresh off of a stunning 2002 World Cup campaign with Senegal, was among those who expressed interest in the vacant Egypt post. The EFA instead settled on thenIsmaily manager Mohsen Saleh, citing financial constraints.

AYV Awards 2015 Now Open: Call for Youth Media Projects

Last year, Christine Chung and Salwa Majoka were 12th grade students at Northview Heights Secondary School in Toronto. Christine describes herself as “a lifelong creative doer” and someone who “explores human conditions, trying to convey them in her work.” Salwa says that she “finds happiness in visually sharing stories and conceptually strong ideas, hoping she can make people ‘think’ about issues.” These two young women decided to bring their perspectives and creativity together to produce “Hunger’s Core”, an animated short that tackles world hunger – and took first place Animation in the 2014 Adobe Youth Voices Awards. Christine and Salwa hope to continue their studies in animation and illustration so they can direct more

films together. This is one of thousands of stories that show the impact Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) has made on the lives of young people around the world. Since its inception in 2006, the program has cultivated digital media making skills in more than 190,000 youth from 60 countries. AYV aims to give youth creative confidence – the ability to tell powerful stories for social change through the production of digital media projects. Through this experience, they hone skills of selfexpression, ideation, collaboration, flexibility, and persistence. AYV_AWARDS LOGO Today, we open the call for our fourth annual international Adobe Youth Voices Awards to recognize more insightful

digital media projects created by youth like Christine and Salwa. If you or someone you know is eligible, and ready to create positive social change, we encourage a submission in one of our five categories.

year’s time and illustrate the expected impact. Venture winners will receive funding, hardware, Adobe software and mentorship from Ashoka’s Youth Venture to support the execution of their proposed plan.

The competition accepts entries in four visual storytelling methods: Documentary, Animation, Narrative and Visual Composition, which includes photography and graphic design. It’s open to youth ages 13 to 19 who want to use the power of digital media to drive awareness of social issues important to them. Winning projects will receive grants to support a nonprofit of their choice, hardware and Adobe software.

All youth must team with an educator from their school or youth organization to submit the entry on their behalf. Complete entry guidelines are available on the official competition website.

We have been so inspired by these projects, and the promising young leaders behind them, that we added a fifth category, Venture – an invitation for five-minute video submissions that pitch a solution to a social problem. Entrants are asked to propose a plan for implementing the solution over a

The AYV Award season is always filled with excitement at Adobe because we find out what’s on the minds of youth from around the world. With the addition of the Venture category, we’re eager to see what issues our young social innovators will want to tackle. I’m sure they will continue to inspire and surprise us, and we look forward to sharing these stories with you in the coming months. To register: http://youthvoices.adobe.com/awards

Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 WHAT IT IS Though it bears the Shelby name, this is the creation of Ford’s SVT group. It’s more the spiritual successor to the recent and beloved Boss 302 than the most recent Shelby, that groundthumping supercharged beast known as the GT500. So why call it a Shelby instead of a Boss or a Cobra or a Mach (or a Sprint or a Ghia or . . .)? Because attaching the Shelby name allows Ford to charge more. WHY IT MATTERS Why it matters? Why it matters?! What’s wrong with you-are you only

reading this because you’re waiting at the doctor’s office? PLATFORM The GT350 uses the same “S550” platform that underpins the 2015 Mustang. We anticipate that this version will ride on a significantly stiffer suspension with adjustable dampers. Early test vehicles, spotted around the company’s Dearborn, Michigan, headquarters, wore crossdrilled carbon-ceramic brake rotors. Those mules were also rolling on 19-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer performance tires, with

POWERTRAIN SVT isn’t trying to top its supercharged GT500 engine here. Instead, expect a version of the 5.0-liter V-8 that powers the Mustang GT. This engine might have a slightly larger displacement than the stock unit, and SVT is known to be working on a flat-plane crankshaft for the “Voodoo” engine. The lower rotating mass with such a setup should allow this V-8 to rev past 8000 rpm and deliver about 550 horsepower. We expect this engine to be mounted exclusively to a manual transmission and send its power through a limitedslip differential. COMPETITION Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE, Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, other Chevrolet Camaros, Dodge Challenger SRT, a used Boss 302. WHAT MIGHT GO WRONG If the SVT team can do a performance Mustang as good as the Mustang team’s old Boss 302, not much at all should go wrong.
