Gathering Encuentro

El Perú es fruto de un encuentro de culturas. Quizás Caral, cuna de la civilización en tierra americana, señala una vocación de encuentro y acogida que ha caracterizado a nuestros pueblos. Más tarde se alzarán Sipán, Wari y el Imperio incaico como otras iniciativas, cada una con sus diversas características, de unir a la gente de nuestro territorio en un proyecto mayor.

La llegada de los españoles selló este rasgo distintivo del pueblo peruano, y con el pasar de los años aumentaría la diversidad de nacionalidades, costumbres y etnias llegadas de Europa, Asia y África. Sin embargo, en este crisol de identidades, la base andina e hispana constituye el elemento fundamental. Esto se aprecia muy bien en los Andes peruanos, y de manera particular en Ayacucho. La misma arquitectura de la ciudad da testimonio de esta síntesis viviente. El visitante atento notará cómo la cuadrícula de la ciudad y las formas hispanas se mezclan con las técnicas andinas del trabajo de la piedra, el adobe, el maguey y el ichu. Dos culturas que se abrazan y funden en una sola con identidad propia y, sobre todo, en una misma fe. Quizás sea en el “bosque de iglesias” de la ciudad —más de 33— donde se expresa de manera más armónica este mestizaje. El encuentro de culturas no ha sido fácil. La armonía no siempre ha sido perfecta, dando a veces lugar a rupturas y abusos. Pero la unidad ha sabido trascender esas diferencias. Quizá por eso los ayacuchanos tienen un cariño muy especial a la procesión del Miércoles Santo llamada “El Encuentro”, donde se escenifica con las andas el recorrido de Cristo con la Cruz y su reunión, en el camino al Calvario, con San Juan, la Verónica y sobre todo con la Virgen Dolorosa.

Esta procesión es más que una piadosa confluencia de imágenes. Es un encuentro vivo con personas diversas, de distintas edades, condición social, historias personales, que buscan una comunión verdadera y profunda, en la tierra en la que viven, con los demás, consigo mismos, bajo el único Encuentro capaz de reconciliarlos hasta lo más profundo de su corazón.

It’s a living gathering of diverse people of di erent ages, social status, and personal stories looking for a true and profound communion with others, and with themselves in the land where they live, under the only Communion able to reconcile them to the deepest recesses of their hearts.

A visit to the market is critical. Several mamachas (women dressed in folkloric clothes) o er “chapla” bread (an Andean bread), guaguas (sweet bread shaped like a bundled baby) and other varieties typical of the region. Una visita al mercado es fundamental. Varias mamachas ofrecen pan chapla (un pan andino sin miga), guaguas (pan dulce con forma de un niño arropado) y otras variedades típicas de la región.

ere is no shortage of medicinal herbs, condiments and desserts. Lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, carrots and cassava, are among the products of this land. No faltan las yerbas medicinales, los condimentos y los postres. Lechuga, tomate, pimiento, zapallo, zanahoria y yuca, entre otros productos de esta tierra.

Ayacucho is famous for its weaving and embroidery. e great colors of their clothes highlight the joy and vitality of its people. Ayacucho es famoso por sus telares y bordados. El gran colorido de sus prendas destaca la alegría y vitalidad de su pueblo.

Lambs, pork and cattle. It is better if the animals are bred locally. e market also o ers the popular Andean cheese. Corderos, puercos y reses. Si los animales son de crianza local, mejor. También se ofrece el popular queso andino.

El Lunes Santo se realiza la procesión del “Señor del Huerto”. De ella se encarga la Universidad de Huamanga. La imagen sale, después de Misa, de la capilla de la Buena Muerte. On Easter Monday is the procession of the “Lord of the Garden”, which is taken care of by the University of Huamanga. e image exits after Mass from the chapel of the Good Death.

El “Señor de la Sentencia” sale el día martes, y la mayordomía de esta procesión se alterna anualmente entre el Poder Judicial y el Ministerio Público. La imagen de un Jesús sangrante y con las manos atadas es llevada por dos soldados. A Cristo, condenado injustamente, se le ha puesto la medalla de Juez Superior, expresando la aspiración de juzgar con justicia y misericordia. e “Lord of Judgment” comes out on Tuesday, and stewardship of this procession corresponds to the Justice Department and the Public Ministry, that take turns every year. e image of a bleeding Christ, with his hands tied, is lead by two soldiers. En la plaza, frente al edificio del Poder Judicial, se rinde un sentido homenaje a la imagen del “Señor de la Sentencia”. La procesión da una vuelta alrededor de la plaza y regresa por la misma ruta. Durante las tardes se preparan las alfombras sobre las que avanzarán las procesiones. Su elaboración se hace muchas veces en familia, delante de la casa o del lugar de trabajo. Algunos contratan también artistas que se especializan en este trabajo. During the afternoons the carpets on which the processions will advance are prepared. ey are often done by families, in front of their homes or workplaces. Some people also hire artists who specialize in this work.

Everyone does what they can. Broom flowers are generally used to add yellow, and bougainvillea for other colors. Not many flowers grow in Ayacucho, which is why dyes with sawdust are used for details. Some extend weaved rugs decorated with other elements. Wheat–like spikes and leaves are also used. Everything is combined with great care and finesse to make these beautiful and colorful shawls. Cada uno hace lo que puede. Se usan generalmente flores de retama para el color amarillo, y de buganvilias para otros colores. No crecen muchas flores en Ayacucho, por ello se usa aserrín con tintes para los detalles. Algunos extienden telares decorados con otros elementos. También se utilizan espigas y hojas. Todo se combina con gran cuidado y fineza para hacer estos hermosos y coloridos mantos.

Las alfombras de mayor tamaño se preparan en la Plaza Mayor. Muchos jóvenes participan en su creación, sobre todo estudiantes universitarios. Las facultades universitarias piden espacio en estas calles para elaborar sus alfombras de flores en homenaje al Señor. e larger rugs are made in the Main Square. Many young people are involved in their creation, especially college students. e university faculties request a space on these streets to make their carpets of flowers in tribute to the Lord.

La preparación de estas alfombras atrae a gran cantidad de personas, pero nadie las pisará, incluso durante la procesión, en medio de la multitud. Serán el anda y sus cargadores los primeros en hacerlo. e preparation of these carpets attracts many people, but nobody dares to step on them, even during the procession and amid the crowd. e float and its carriers will be the first to do so.

Antes del “Encuentro”, el martes por la tarde, las imágenes son trasladadas del monasterio de las clarisas, donde han sido adornadas, a la iglesia de Santa Clara. Para el traslado, que consiste en una vuelta a la manzana, se hace una pequeña procesión, en la que participan la hermandad, los vecinos y algunos devotos. Los miembros de la hermandad se preparan colocándose sus insignias. Before the “Gathering” on Tuesday afternoon, the images are transferred from the Order of Saint Claire Monastery, where they have been decorated, to Santa Clara Church. For the transfer, around the block, a small procession is made involving the brotherhood, neighbors and some devotees. e members of the brotherhood dress for the occasion and wear their insignias.

Las imágenes son colocadas en el templo de Santa Clara, donde las andas serán preparadas. La procesión del miércoles se iniciará aquí. El techo del presbiterio de la iglesia es un bello ejemplo del estilo mudéjar. El miércoles por la noche tres pregoneros salen del templo y anuncian la salida del Nazareno. Tocan un cuerno, un tambor y un cencerro. e images are placed in Saint Claire’s Temple, where the floats will be readied. e procession will begin here on Wednesday. e church’s chancel roof is a beautiful example of Moorish style. Sisters from the Order of Saint Claire place their rings of consecration on the Lord’s crown of thorns as a symbol of their love and availability. Groups of musicians perform touching traditional songs, many in Quechua. Las hermanas clarisas han puesto sus anillos de consagración en la corona de espinas del Señor como símbolo de su amor y disponibilidad. Grupos de músicos dirigen conmovedores cantos tradicionales, muchos en quechua.

Delante del anda va un brasero. El humo del palo santo despide un característico aroma que acompaña toda la procesión. A brazier is carried in front of the float. e “Holy wood” smoke gives o a characteristic smell that accompanies the procession.

e image of the Virgin of Sorrows comes out at the end. e women that accompany it are from the Nazarene Brotherhood. La imagen de la Virgen Dolorosa sale al final. La acompañan las mujeres de la hermandad del Nazareno.

e brotherhood members make room for the first meeting. e Nazarene comes to the Main Square where he meets the small St. John the Apostle float. e images are inclined as a form of salute. After St. John’s float, Veronica’s will follow, who during the meeting with Christ, will unveil the image of his face imprinted on the cloth. e Virgin then receives the visit of Saint John and then Veronica will show her the face of her Son. La Virgen recibe después la visita de San Juan y luego de la Verónica, quien le muestra el rostro de su Hijo.

When the Nazarene float reaches the second corner of the square and heads to the third, the float of the Virgin of Sorrows comes to the first corner, but instead of following the path of Christ, it goes in the opposite direction around the square, so that both floats will come face to face. After a few minutes the Nazarene begins the journey back. e Virgin waits a moment, and then follows the path to return to the Order of Saint Claire Church. Luego de unos minutos el Nazareno emprende el recorrido de regreso. La Virgen espera un momento, para después seguir también el camino de retorno a la iglesia de las clarisas.

Neither the time nor the rain matter. When the tour ends in the square, cleaning groups begin their work, and by dawn the city streets will be impeccable. No importa la hora ni la lluvia. Cuando acaba el recorrido por la plaza, grupos de limpiadores inician su trabajo y las calles de la ciudad amanecerán impecables.
