MAYOR'S MESSAGE
WE ARE PLEASED to present to you the 17th annual Medina Area Magazine and Community Guide. Thanks to the generous sponsorships of our local businesses and organizations, this publication is brought to you free-of-charge. In turn, please support these local businesses with your patronage and “Shop Medina” whenever possible. Our businesses have found the city to be a friendly location with a quality workforce. In 2023, the City welcomed over 25 new businesses with ribbon cuttings. We also celebrated the 25th anniversary for This-n-That Antiques, and the 45th anniversary of VCS Salon & Spa. We are all aware that Medina has become a destination on many levels. Whether you are a resident, tourist, business owner, shopper, or a history-lover, you will find that Medina is extraordinary. In 2024, we invite you to “Meet Me In Medina”. We believe this will take on a whole new meaning when we serve as an Ambassador City for the April 8, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. The last total eclipse in northeast Ohio was in 1806, and the next will be in 2099, so this phenomenon will draw visitors by the thousands to view the once-ina-lifetime event. Medina has also just launched an astronomy-related display called the Helios Project, created by local business owner Larry Johns. You will find more information about the project in this magazine. You can also “Meet Me in Medina” during the twenty-one Saturdays of the Medina Square Farmers Market, the 30th Annual Ice Festival, the Candlelight Walk, the numerous free concert events, and all of the festivals and events produced by Main Street Medina. Greater Medina is proud of its wide-ranging selection of restaurants where you can always get a great meal; it’s six excellent breweries, and some of the best ice cream and yogurt you will ever taste. Don’t forget to “meet me” for your shopping; from candles to fine leather goods, from books to candy apples, Medina is the place to meet and shop. Lastly, Medina is a great place to live! One visit to the Square and folks know this is where they want to live, raise a family, or retire. Medina has award-winning schools, a premier library system, an extensive selection of fine parks and recreation choices, safe streets and neighborhoods, and world-class healthcare. No matter how you find your way to Medina, we welcome you! If you have any questions or we may assist you, please contact the city at 330-722-9020 or visit www.medinaoh.org. Sincerely, Dennis Hanwell Mayor, City of Medina

WITH ITS ECLECTIC BLEND of old town charm and ample city amenities, Medina, some might insist, is at the center of the universe. Especially after the August dedication of the Helios Project — an outdoor exhibit that scales our solar system down from 10 billion miles in diameter to a more navigable walk in the park. “To my knowledge there’s nothing exactly like it anywhere in the whole world,” said Larry Johns, owner of Medina-based McJak Candy Co., and creator of the Helios Project. The exhibit begins with a stainless steel representation of the sun, located behind Spokes Café, on Broadway Street, south of Public Square. From there one can visit and learn about the planets with a comfortable stroll across the scaled down solar system. “The size of the universe is fascinating,” Johns said. “If it were correctly placed, Pluto would

I had to move it in more than three miles because the trail doesn’t go far enough.” Once you leave the solar system, you can continue your exploration of the Milky Way and other galaxies to gain perspective about the immense size of the universe. Johns said the project was inspired by a “solar system walk” and a series of YouTube videos that discussed the size of the universe. “I tried to share something I found interesting or quirky about each of the stops — each planet or each galaxy,” Johns said. “For example, I don’t think a lot of people realize that Saturn’s rings are relatively recent compared to the age of our solar system. They’ll eventually disappear again. The idea was to have this be educational, but in a fun way.” Johns hopes schools and other groups will incorporate a walk through the Helios

Along with Medina’s new exploration into outer space, the city’s development on the ground also has been stellar, said Kimberly Marshall, the city’s economic development director. “We’re continuing to see investment in the North Court [Street] corridor,” she said, noting that a proposed 160,000 square foot Meijer store on the site of the shuttered Kmart is expected to spur additional retail development in the area. The store could create as many as 300 full- and part-time jobs, Marshall said. “This is a significant accomplishment because the Kmart building has been vacant for almost 12 years,” she said. “The number one question that people have asked me is what’s going on with the Kmart building, so it’s nice to see something positive happening there.” With an anchor tenant in place, Marshall said she expects other vacancies in the plaza to fill up. “When you drive down the North Court corridor, almost everything is new now,” she said. “We have a new Chick-fil-A, First Watch [restaurant], a new addition to the Medina Shopping Plaza and a new Aldi store. Taco Bell and Wendy’s put up brand new buildings to replace their older ones.” Further south, Mayor Dennis Hanwell said, an Acme supermarket has been proposed. The recent North Court widening project is a key to the redevelopment of the area, he said. “Most of the

$21 million cost was paid by the [Ohio Department of Transportation], then the city paid extra for the center decorative islands and lights, then we added a multimodal path,” he said. “Since we’ve done that project, we’ve seen nearly $52 million in investments, which demonstrates that if the city invests, then the commercial and industrial businesses will invest as well.”
DESTINATION CITY Medina has long been recognized as an ideal community in which to live, run a business and raise a family. But Hanwell said it’s also a compelling place to visit. “We’re working very hard with Main Street Medina and the Chamber of Commerce to make Medina more like a destination,” he said. Perhaps the town’s most notable attraction, the iconic Public Square is surrounded by Victorian style buildings, projecting the ambiance of a

The events and activities on the square and throughout the eight-block historic area keep the town vibrant and are very helpful to our business community. If an event brings in 10,000 or 15,000 people, they have to eat somewhere. They’re going to get a coffee or a soda somewhere.” A proposed downtown hotel could help to encourage guests to spend more time in Medina, Hanwell said. “It would be nice to have a hotel because of all the events we have here,” he said. “Instead of people coming just one day for an event, they could actually spend the night and visit Castle Noel, go to Root Candle and see some of the shops in town. We have more than 300 weddings a year on Public Square. People come for the ceremony, but then they leave because there’s not a place to stay. Our thinking is with this hotel that they could be here the night before for the rehearsal and patronize our local businesses.” One of the city’s popular annual events is Main Street Medina’s Candlelight Walk — a three-day event that kicks off the holiday season. “We light the tree on Friday evening,

then everybody enjoys the holiday music,” he said. “On Saturday night we have a parade that delivers Santa Downtown. Then we have fireworks synchronized to Christmas music over the top of the court houses on the east side.” Public Square also is a strong center for business activity, Hanwell notes, adding that there is always a demand for commercial space downtown, but for the past 12 years we've been at nearly full capacity.

Hanwell said the philosophy of “community oriented government” has helped to make residents happy and proud of their town. “City employees don’t say ‘that’s not my job’ when we see something that needs to be done,” the mayor insists. “If there is a problem, it’s everybody’s responsibility to fix it. If there is a defect in the street for example, it doesn’t matter whether somebody from the Parks Department or a clerk at City Hall spots it—it’s all of our responsibility to get it reported and get it corrected before somebody damages a tire. The goal is to make sure that even small problems are fixed promptly so that the city always looks well kept, clean and pretty. When I was with the police department [including almost 13 years as chief], we called it a community oriented policing model. We’ve adopted that into our community oriented government model.” A similar concept brings efficiency to the local business community, Hanwell said. “Anytime a new business is looking to come to town we do what’s called a pre-development meeting,” he explained. “We bring all our department heads in, the utilities, and the county economic development people for one meeting so the business people don’t have to come back 15 times talking to different groups. It makes things easier for them. The head of real estate for Meijer told us he’s been in multiple states and has never seen a city as responsive as we are.”
THE HELIOS PROJECT
The Johns Family, donors of The Helios Project, invites you to learn more about the Universe by visiting this one-of-a-kind outdoor exhibit.
A Truly Unique Experience! IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, Helios carried the Sun across the sky from east to west each day in his flying chariot. On Medina’s Champion Creek Trail, visitors now have the chance to travel through the heavens in the new Helios Project. This permanent outdoor exhibit begins behind Spokes Café at 406 South Broadway, at a 55” model Sun (one billionth actual size) and continues to the planets and other features of our solar system, which are also scaled accordingly in terms of size and distance. Guests will leave our solar system and continue along Champion Creek to the outer reaches of the universe. Visitors will learn fun and little-known facts about our solar system, Milky Way Galaxy, and the overall universe along this 1.7-mile experience. The exhibits are broken down into three sections, with a scale that shrinks for each part. After the solar system, the scale is reduced to one hundred trillionth (1/100,000,000,000,000) actual size to allow visitors to travel from our solar system to the closest neighboring stars. The final section shrinks the scale a third time to show distances between galaxies. Each of the three major sections has an introduction placard which includes a QR code that connects to the corresponding page on the website. While there are other parks in the world that take visitors through a scaled solar system, this is the only presentation that begins with the Sun and continues through our Milky Way galaxy and beyond. It is truly a unique experience for all ages! The Helios Project was opened in August 2023 and is a gift to the community from Larry and Francine Johns of Medina. 2024 SOLAR ECLIPSE
Eclipse Ambassador Community Partnership AN ECLIPSE is an awe-inspiring celestial event that changes the appearance of the two biggest objects we see in the sky: our Sun and Moon. When the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, and is perfectly aligned, the Moon blocks the light of the Sun from reaching Earth. The result is a total solar eclipse. The track of the Moon’s shadow across the Earth’s surface is called the Path of Totality. In order to see the Sun fully eclipsed by the Moon you must be in the path of totality. On April 8, 2024, a total eclipse of the sun will occur across a large portion of the United States including Northeast Ohio and the Greater Cleveland region. According to NASA, Medina will experience the Path of Totality from approximately 3:13 p.m. until 3:17 p.m., with a total eclipse time of roughly 2 ½ hours. The City of Medina has been awarded an Eclipse

Do You Have Persistent Joint Pain?
It May Be Time to Consider Surgery JOINT PAIN and stiffness are part of the aging process for many people. There are many options to manage it, including weight loss, supportive aids such as a brace or a cane; injections of cortisone; physical therapy/exercise; and oral and topical pain killers, but there often comes a time when these are just not enough. “If you have tried non-surgical treatments and you’re still having symptoms that interfere with your daily life or that keep you up at night, it may be time to look into joint
replacement surgery,” says Peter Surace, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee surgery at Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital. Don’t avoid it because of your age! Dr. Surace explains that no one is too old or too young. “Age is a common reason for joint problems, but family history, overuse and injuries can also be responsible,” he says. To make an appointment to see an orthopedic surgeon at Medina Hospital, call 866-320-4573.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION
Children’s RePlay
REPLAY FOR KIDS is a nonprofit organization based in Medina, whose mission is to increase the availability of adaptive toys and devices to enhance the quality of life for children with disabilities. RePlay for Kids hosts workshops where volunteers are shown how to adapt a toy so that a child with physical or developmental disabilities can use an external switch to operate the toy. These toys are then donated to agencies or schools that work children with special needs, or directly to families so that children who need them can use these adapted toys at home. The organization also works with agencies to repair their existing toys and assistive devices. They also provide training and educational resources to individuals and organizations interested in learning more about adapting toys and devices for children with disabilities. Funding for
these services come from foundations, individual and corporate donations and sponsorships. Companies, community groups or individuals interested in participating in or hosting a workshop can contact RePlay for Kids to schedule the activity. More info can be found at www.replayforkids.org, or call 330-721-8281, or email info@replayforkids.org.

Bringing People Together In 1976, Millard and Linda Fuller gave birth to a vision that believed everyone deserved a decent place to live. Over the last 47 years Habitat for Humanity has improved the shelter of over 22 million people. Habitat for Humanity of Medina County joined with this vision back in 1991 and over the last 32 years has built 50 homes across our county. This was accomplished because of our committed volunteers both on our build site and ReStore, along with generous financial supporters of Habitat. As we move forward our mission remains the same. To provide decent, safe and affordable shelter to qualified households in Medina County. We strive to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Stop by our ReStore or visit our website at www.medinahabitat.org to learn more about how you can partner with us on this mission.

For over 15 years, Cups Cafe has served the community of Medina by offering a safe place that welcomes anyone and serves a free meal to everyone who comes into the cafe. As a faith-based 501(c)3 non-profit, Cups provides this as a service to the community out of our belief that God is the provider of all things and that He asks us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Cups also offers a small food pantry, school supply closet, and washroom to those in need. Additionally, every day at 2pm, the cafe transitions to an after-school hangout for kids only and offers tutoring, homework help, and other after school activities. We are grateful to a generous community that helps us continue our mission. Cups Cafe is located at 126 N. Court St., 330-241-5990.
