Big and beautiful – the multicultural Inari

Northern lights above Kaunispää fell.

Inari is the largest municipality in Finland. It is also an international travel destination, one of the biggest in Finland. Inari is located in the northernmost corner of the European Union, in the centre of the Cap of the North. Inari takes around 5% or the whole surface area of Finland. Inari is a neighboring municipality to both Norway and Russia, and is in close cooperation with its neighboring municipalities. Due to Inari’s good location, it has been a meeting point for different cultures throughout the times. It had also been the central passageway to the Arctic Ocean and the Kola Peninsula. European Union’s northernmost border crossing points can be found in Inari. The name for these connections is the Arctic Ocean Passageway. Inari is located in close proximity to the European highway network, which strengthens its status in the Barents area. Approximately 140 000 passengers pass through the Ivalo airport every year, and it offers quick connections to everywhere in the world.

The indigenous people Inari is a part of the Sámi

area of Finland, and a home to three different Sámi groups in Finland. The Sámi people are the only indigenous people of Europe. There are three different Sámi languages used alongside Finnish; Skolt Sámi, Inari Sámi and Northern Sámi. Approximately a third of the population of Inari are Sámi. Two thirds of the population are living in the population centre of Ivalo, which is the biggest town in the municipality. The municipality works hard to help the local community and companies to work internationally. They do this by holding educational training and projects, as well as by supporting the local companies to expand their efforts to serve international clients.

Clean nature and good service Inari’s pure, pristine nature makes it one of the most attractive travel destinations in Lapland. There is a lot to see and experience; there are over 100 fells and approximately 10 000 lakes in the area. The famous lake Inari is the second biggest lake in Finland. It is approximately 100 kilometers long and average depth is 14 meters.

The lake’s deepest parts are almost 100 meters deep, and the lake has over 3 300 islands. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the area every year, and the seasons change according to the four magnificently different times of the year. where people come to experience the autumn colours as well as the northern lights of winter. In the autumn people come to Saariselkä to see the beautiful autumn colours. In winter visitors come to experience the polar night and the northern lights. Saariselkä is also one of the leading skiing centres in Finland. In the summer time people come to Inari to experience the midnight sun. When the sun doesn’t set all day, tourists like to go hiking in the vast wilderness or try fishing in the lake Inari. Inari also serves as a perfect stop over on the way to the northernmost part of Europe; the North Cape, also known as Nordkapp. The entrepreneurs of Inari have worked hard for decades to make sure that Inari provides something for everybody. In the recent year the companies of the area have in-

Inari Municipality

A municipality is a local unit of public administration, the smallest unit with a democratically elected administration. In line with the Local Government Act, the function of a Municipality is to maintain wellbeing and to foster sustainable development. The Municipal Board is responsible for the administration and financial management of the municipality and for preparing, executing and watching over the legality of Council decisions. The Municipal Board safeguards the interests of the municipality and generally represents the municipality and exercises its right to speak. Inari is the largest municipality in Finland and it was established in 1876. It has a surface area of 17,321 km², of which 2,148 km² is covered by water and 15,173 km² is land. Inari has a population of around 7,000, of which about one-third are Sámi, the indigenous people of Finland. About 400 people in Inari speak Inari Sámi as their mother tongue. The largest employers are the Municipality of Inari, the Finnish Border Guard, and Metsähallitus, which administers stateowned land and water areas. Tourism is also a major employer. The accommodation businesses in the area register around 375,000 overnight stays every year; there are around 15,000 beds in the district, 13,500 of them at the Saariselkä Holiday Resort, which is the northernmost ski resort in Europe

The 2017 Skábmagovat Film Festival spotlights the Maori

The 19th Skábmagovat Film Festival in Inari focuses strongly on Maori films and the jubilee year of the Sámi. The 2017 Skábmagovat Film Festival spotlights the Maori The Skábmagovat Film Festival will spotlight Maori films from Aotearoa (New Zealand) this January, with the Maori singer and filmmaker Moana Maniapoto attending. Maniapoto, who has been elected to the Music Hall of Fame in her native country, will perform at the Cultural Centre Sajos on Saturday, 28 January 2017.

Right now, we see Maori cinema flourish. The most recent example of this vigorous period is the fact that Taika Waititi has been granted Hollywood funding for his films as the second Maori, with Lee Tamahori as the first one (Once Were Warriors). In addition to a diverse cavalcade of Maori films, Skábmagovat presents a selection of Waititi’s films, including two films (Boy and Hunt for the Wilderpeople) that have drawn all-time record audiences in New Zealand.

The Sámi celebrate A Sámi jubilee year gives a special flavour to the programme of the festival. In February, the Sámi celebrate the centenary of their national day, and 2017 brings us the 30th anniversary of Sámi cinema. A world premiere of a documentary on Elsa Laula Renberg gives the audience a taste of the national day. Renberg, a South Sámi activist and politician, was a central figure in creating a pan-Sámi sense of unity in the early 1900s. The film has been

directed by Roger Manndal. The anniversary of Sámi cinema, in turn, is celebrated through a joint show with the Maori where two indigenous films that have been nominated for an Academy Award meet: Nils Gaup’s dynamic Pathfinder (1987) and Taika Waititi’s charming short film Two Cars, One Night (2004). Katja Gauriloff’s successful documentary Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest will be enriched by memories by contemporaries of Robert Crottet, the author whose visit to the Skolt Sámi community the film focuses on. As Treasures from the Archives, we will show Skolt Sámi documentaries by Jarmo Laine, selected from the Yleisradio materials that the documentarist’s heirs donated to the Sámi Archives in autumn 2016. For the first time, Skábmagovat will have an evening of dance at the snow theatre. The performance Jotteeh has been created by Auri Ahola, an Inari Sámi dancer who danced at the Finnish National Ballet and in the Tero Saarinen

Company for years and moved to Inari in 2015. The 19th Skábmagovat Film Festival takes place in Inari from 26 to 29 January 2017. Films will be screened at the Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos, the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre Siida, and the Northern Lights Theatre, our special theatre made from snow. A more detailed programme will be published in December at www. skabmagovat.fi. The festival is part of the programme of Finland’s centenary year. The Skábmagovat Film Festival is arranged by the Friends of Sámi Art in cooperation with the Sámi Museum and Nature Centre Siida, the Cultural Centre Sajos, the Indigenous Film Centre Skábma, the Sámi Education Institute, the International Sámi Film Institute, and YLE Sápmi. The festival has Jenni Haukio, the First Lady of Finland, as its patron.

When Gordon Ramsay Shot a Reindeer... - We shoot it in the head and it will die immediately.

- Petri thinks that this is a better way. If you want to eat the reindeer, you have to shoot it first. –I understand Gordon Ramsay, one of the most prestigious chefs in the world, visited Inari a few years ago. He came to learn about reindeer herding and the local cuisine. In restaurant Kultahippu he tried reindeer stew, smoked reindeer and reindeer fillet. He was impressed and praised all of the dishes. A local entrepreneur Petri Mattus took Ramsay to visit his reindeer farm to tell more about reindeer herding. With Petri Mattus Ramsay could experience the ‘best winter wonderland.’

During his visit Ramsay even shot a reindeer. The video can be found on YouTube. In the video, Petri Mattus says how it is best if the reindeer is killed very quickly, so it doesn’t have to suffer the fear and stress of being in a slaughterhouse. Ramsay didn’t get to shoot the reindeer without some practise. First Mattus set up a shooting range, where his visitor’s shooting skills could be tested. Petri Mattus is pleased that even though the video has gotten a lot of views

on YouTube, nobody has dared to suggest reindeer shooting to be a part of his programme for tourists. The video also shows what kind of delicious foods Gordon Ramsay developed out of local ingredients. The Mattus family was pleased to enjoy chef Ramsay’s tasty dishes.

Petri Mattus is Familiar with Film Crews Petri Mattus is a fulltime reindeer herder, but he is also known as expe-

rienced and trustworthy entrepreneur. Dozens of film crews have visited his farm, and regular tourist groups have found their way into his farm as well. - We have done well. Of course sometimes there are things that are impossible to carry out. In those situations, I tell the customers straight away if something can’t be done. Then we work together to see what other possibilities we have, Petri Mattus says. Gordon Raymsay’s visit went along well without any problems. - Every customer is important to us, and all visitors are treated with extra care, he continues. When asked about more

details of the master chef behind the scenes, Mattus answers that it can all be seen in the video. He says that every customer has the right for their privacy. And that there really aren’t any photographs of Ramsay’s visit. Petri Mattus reveals a little bit of the ‘secret’, saying that Gordon Ramsay is genuinely a nice person, and he is easy to get along with. The video can be found on Youtube with the keywords ‘Gordon Ramsay Lapland’ Ritva Savela

Winter bicycle tours in Saariselkä There are many fat bike trails around Saariselkä area that are used even in winter time. There are approximately 10 kilometres of bicycle tracks around Saariselkä, but most of them are unmarked. Luckily Saariselkä offers guided tours for winter bicyclists, which are arranged by Saariselkä Training. ‘Saariselkä central booking agency has two bike tours in their weekly timetable, but the tours can be arranged at other times as well,’ says Tiina Idström from Saariselkä central booking agency. They

have five different sized fat bikes for rent. ‘We have made a deal with some of the entrepreneurs of the area and we can use their tracks for winter cycling,’ Idström says. Activity programme service company Lapin Safarit Oy are also renting out fat bikes, possibly even pedelec bicycles. Pedelec bicycles are equipped with small electric motor which assist the pedalling. Guided tours can be booked from the company, but they also offer tips for those who wish to cycle the tracks independently.

Northern Lights Village offers you Aurora Borealis

Pasi Ruotsalainen

The first 20 wooden huts have been ready since the beginning of December, and first customers will arrive, says Markku Inkilä who is the host of the new centre.

Northen Lights Village is a new accommodation and restaurant complex, that serves customers who are looking for the Aurora Borealis. The Village is located very close to the centre of Saariselkä. Altogether, 40 wooden huts will be built, as well as a restaurant that can seat up to 160 people. In addition, office and maintenance facilities will be built.

The first 20 wooden huts have been ready since the beginning of December, and first customers will arrive, says Markku Inkilä who is the host of the new centre. From the skylight windows one can easily see what is happening in the dark night sky, and Inkilä has studied the night sky carefully. - I have looked and studied carefully where the

Northern Lights appear most often, and the huts are built based on those observations. The goal is that all customers get a comprehensive and memorable experience from their journey. For the same reason the restaurant has very large windows that provide a perfect view to the yard and to the night sky. For the delight of the visitors there are also reindeers

in the yard that can be observed and admired safely from near. Northern Lights Village is a full service travel centre, where all the activities start and end in the area. Most of the visitors who will enjoy these services will be tourists from abroad. - We have visitors from many different countries from Asia, as well as from South and Middle Europe. Surprisingly many groups are coming from Italy and Spain, Markku Inkilä says. - We have tailored our programmes so that customers can stay with us for one or two days, but some travel agencies book week long visits too. We welcome all visitors. Ritva Savela

WINTER 2016-2017

Ultima Jewelry company in Saariselkä has introduced a whole new collection of rings. The unique collection consists of twelve different rings, each representing different months of the year. The rings have been made by using high quality precious metals, as well as Finnish gemstones and Lappish gold. All of the work is done within the family business. In the designs they want to take into consideration the preferences of different customers. Some of the designs are very different from the common trends, and they are made for people who value personality and uniqueness in the designs. Other rings are made by following classic designs, but with a twist of the company’s own high-class finishing and modern designs. The rings have been made by Lauri Kauttu and designed by Ari Kauttu.

Designed in Saariselkä!

A Ring

Ring of September is Lemmenjoki: 750‰ gold with garnet from Lemmenjoki in a white gold crown. The flaming red colour of the garnet resembles the alpine bearberry that lay at the feet of Lemmenjoki river’s birches. The soothing colours of gold and red give its user warmth and happiness.

for Every Month

Ring of January is Wolverine’s Paw. 750‰ white gold, with one 0.03 ct blue diamond and five black diamonds. Ring of February is a classic called the North Star. It is made by using 750‰ gold. The rings crown is embellished by 0.15 ct or 0.25 ct WVS diamond.

Ring of March consist of two rings: 585‰ white gold with gold nuggets from Lemmenjoki. The names are: Lappish Gold from the Heart of Lemmenjoki and The Sun of the Polar Night.

Ring of April is called Isakkipää: it is made of 925‰ silver. The ring gets its name from a fell in Saariselkä. Like Lappish residents, the ring also endures the cold winds of Lapland.

Ring of May is Ivalo River, 750‰ palladium-plated gold and a 0.20 ct blue diamond. In the early hours of May, the ice on the river glows like a blue diamond. The North Star casts its last lights on the stream before it retreats to give way to the midnight sun.

Ring of June is Rihla 585‰ gold with gold nuggets from Lemmenjoki. In June the ground frost melts and the gold diggers of Lemmenjoki start their work. Checking of the rihla (a track where the gold will end up) is the most exciting part of the day.

Ring of July is Lapland’s Ring. The design draws inspiration from Saariselkä. It is 925‰ silver. The ring is like a Lappish lady; strong and tenacious. Both love life, and get better with time. The round little plates protect the user from disease and hardships. The marks of the tools are seen in the surface of the ring.

Ring of August is Kasari: 925‰ matt finished silver and three black 0.03 ct diamonds. Kasariselkä is a location on the large lake of Inari which is almost a hundred metres deep. During Midnight Sun period, when the sun doesn’t set, the surface of the lake glimmers in silver, seducing the boater away from the familiar waters. Almost suddenly the surface of the lake is filled with rocks as hard as diamonds. This is reproduced in the surface of the ring, where the black diamonds appear when the ring in turned around.

Ring of October is Stone Head 750‰ hammered white gold with matt finish and a blue cordierite. In the ring its user can see the luminous colours of early winter. When the last northern bilberries of the autumn get an icy crust of white in the fells of Finnish Lapland. On the mat surface of the gold ring, the blue gem glows together with the Northern sky.

WINTER 2016-2017

The Spirit of Ecstasy is the bonnet ornament on Rolls-Royce cars. It is in the form of a woman leaning forwards with her arms outstretched behind and above her. Billowing cloth runs from her arms to her back, resembling wings. Ari Kauttu

Lauri Kauttu

Ring of November is Kaltio: 925‰ silver and aquamarine. Kaltio is an old Northern word for a fountain. A Lappish fountain runs clear and blue in the purest forest. It offers refreshment for anyone who walks past.

Ring of December is Milky Way: 925‰ silver with beryl, amethyst, garnet, citrine and aquamarine. The winter time is full of colours, and so is our own Milky Way if we have the patience to stop and admire the breathtaking view on our night sky.

Necklace; Tears of Joy 100 years. 950‰Platinum. Three pieces of blue 0.03 ct diamonds and two WVS 0.03 ct diamonds. The time of Finland’s independence has been full of sorrows and triumphs. Over and over again Finland has moved past the difficult times and they have always been followed by times of happiness and joy. On 6th of December 2016 begins the 100th anniversary of Finnish independence. The goldsmiths of Ultima Jewelry are celebrating the Finnish independence by watching the classic movie The Unknown Soldier, which is shown every year on Finnish television. Ari and Lauri Kauttu will also be introducing the new collection of jewellery to celebrate Finland’s 100 years of independence. The necklace is made out of the most precious materials, platinum and diamonds, but what is even more precious is the independence of Finland. Desing: Ari Kauttu Maker: Lauri Kauttu.

Spirit of Ecstasy in Lappish fells Residents of Saariselkä have seen a familiar looking car gliding through the town. What makes this car special is its wellknown bonnet ornament. After a brief moment of amazement, the brain registers what it just saw; the car is a vintage RollsRoyce. The bonnet of the car is decorated with a beautiful, gilded Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet ornament. The owner of the car is a well-known local artist, Vesa Junttila. His work can be seen and bought in the premises of Santa’s Hotel Tunturi. People who know Junttila are not surprised to see the

man behind the wheel. Even when he still had his faithful Jaguar, he has said that one day he will be owning a Rolls-Royce. It was considered a joke by the listeners, as well as the man himself. But here it is now, in Saariselkä. The gorgeous special colour, the luxurious leather upholstery and the additional luxury that comes with the history of the car. Only 800 pieces were manufactured in the 1980s. Most of them went to buyers to the United States, from where this particular vehicle made its way to Finland.

WINTER 2016-2017

One of Arctic Queen’s most popular items are so called hugging capes – in their stock photos a woman is standing in the wind, with her arms stretched to show the round circles on both sides of the cape.

The Queen of the Factory Outlet At first glance it is difficult to think that the DesignCenter is a factory outlet. The shop is full of stylish designs and beautiful clothes. Here one can find brands such as Marimekko and Pentik, as well as clothes from Pirjo Karvonen’s own collection, Arctic Queen. - Hello, Mrs. Arctic Queen, a German couple greets Pirjo Karvonen in Saariselkä Design Centre. The couple are enjoying the last days of their visit and are looking for design souvenirs to remind them of their holiday. For them, Pirjo Karvonen has become the face of the clothing line. And why not? Pirjo has designed the whole Arctic Queen collection, even the fabrics. She has even sewn all the clothes in her “factory outlet”. - We have also found some sewers who are ready to start work if we need them. In case we feel that we cannot deliver enough products. - For the time being Juha Iisakki cuts the fabrics at our home and I sew them at our store when I have ex-

tra time on my hands. Pirjo Karvonen and her husband Juha Iisakki established Saariselkä Design Center to work as a window to show Finnish design such as Marimekko and Pentik. The shop is a good addition to Saariselkä’s services and it is popular shopping place for all visitors. For a long time Pirjo Karvonen had an idea to create her own clothing collection, and the thought turned into practice five years ago. She wanted to use her own models as well as self-designed materials. In reality it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. They need to have a large variety of fabrics, but there weren’t enough resources to order big amounts. Finding the right supplier turned out to be a challenge. - We had an Italian visitor here in Saariselkä who told us he knew a family business in his home town that might be right for us. So Juha Iisakki and I combined business and pleasure and went for a trip to Italy. - It turned out that the first business couldn’t produce the fabrics we needed. But we were really lucky, since our taxi driver had

been to Finland and really wanted to help us out. The third company we visited turned out to be exactly what we needed, and cooperation is going smoothly, Pirjo Karvonen tells. Arctic Queen was born, and it has been popular since the beginning. The collections earthy colours together with the warm and smooth materials have been cornerstone to its success.

Multifunctional comfort Pirjo Karvonen’s starting point in the designs has been that the clothes are genuinely comfortable, multifunctional and easy to combine with other accessories. Their slogan “Made by adults” is part of the collection’s philosophy. Arctic Queen also has an offspring design label called Lumi. The designs have been made by Pirjo’s and Juha Iisakki’s daughter. These clothes are definitely fashion for the younger generation. In recent years, Arctic Queen has become familiar to many visitors and locals of Saariselkä. One of their most popular items are so called hugging capes – in

their stock photos a woman is standing in the wind, with her arms stretched to show the round circles on both sides of the cape. But that is not all that the collection has to offer, they have different kinds of jackets and reversible accessories. The collections newest products include Juha Iisakki’s graphics that are transferred into clothing. Pirjo Karvonen says that she had been thinking about the possibilities of their art for a long time. She was surprised of how good the final results were. The graphic clothes are genuinely stylish and showy. Maybe one day Juha Iisakki will start making matching silver jewellery. If only he would have the time. He doesn’t lack the will and skill, judging by the silversmith’s tools that hand behind the cash register. Ritva Savela

The renovation is over

Huippu serves again Visiting the top of Kaunispään Huippu is the highlight of your Lapland Tour. The Huippu Restaurant and the Souvenir shop are located on the top of Kaunispää Fell. The word Kaunispää means in free Finnish the Beautiful Top. In bright weather you can see hundreds of mountains from the top. In the distant east, some of them are on the Russian side. The buildings of the Huippu are covered with white icy snow in the wintertime. The lights are shining in the darkness of Kaamos.

How to Get on the Top of Huippu?

It is easy to get on the top of Huippu. The Ski bus runs six times a day. You can also take a chairlift from the bottom of the slopes. Maybe the most fun way is first to walk two kilometers uphill from Saariselkä and then come all the way downhill by sled as the children do. (Bring your own sled. You’ll get it from your hotel or Safari offices) Also the marked ski tracks and snowmobile trails go from the Top.

The Panorama and the Nectie Teepee Restaurant

It’s nice to warm up at the fireplace of the Panorama Restaurant and have a hot chocolate or drink, when it is cold and windy outside. With coffee or tea you can enjoy the Huippu´s famous donuts or berry pies. The lunch menu daily offers fish and meat alternatives. You can make your own salad side dish from the popular salad buffet. The Huippu Restaurant á la carte specializes in Lappish cuisine. The reindeer meat, poultry, fish and berries are from nearby nature. The Chaine des Rotisseurs guarantees the high quality of the Necktie teepee Restaurant with its open fire kitchen. It offers a comfortable place for groups and gala dinners. (Only by reservation).

tens and caps are designed in a rich Scandinavian decorative style. There are also local wild berry delicacies and sweets. The Lappish cuisine cook books are suitable for business gifts. You can listen to original local music, when you buy Sámi joik`s. There are also Finnish and Sámi design jewelry made of silver and gold, Lemmenjoki gold nuggets and Finnish gemstones.

The Souvenir Shop Tuliaistupa

It is easy to find suitable souvenirs and gifts for the whole family and friends from the wide selection of Tuliaistupa. There are genuine Lappish handicraft, knives, quality wooden kuksa cups and reindeer leather products. Both children and adults will be delighted with the soft huskies and reindeer toys. A moment of luxury in Aurora Spa It is like coming to a wonderland, or a film. Somewhere away from ordinary life. White surfaces, nice and gloomy lighting. The walls are filled with pictures of dancing aurora borealis, luminous patterns of starry skies on the ceiling. Scent of alder trees is all around, but barely noticeable. Still just strong enough to lull the visitor into a pleasant atmosphere. Into a comfortable care and the anticipation of pampering. And that’s what it is all about here in wellness centre Aurora Spa, care and indulgence. For everyone, regardless of their age or gender, for everyone’s needs. For example, children’s menu offers back, neck, shoulders and arm massage for ages 4 to 14. Or caressing treatment for little arms and toes. Men mainly treat their feet and have different kind of massages. More and more men have also realised how nice the popular energizing facial is. The treatment stimulates the mind and reduces signs of tiredness. - Men often want a light make up as well, for different kinds of photos, for example wedding pictures, Sanna Niemelä and Piia Viskari tell.

speed, and so do wellness companies. New kinds of equipment have emerged that make the job easier and which give the customers even better care. For example, lymfa massage, which is developed to treat swollen feet and thighs and reduce metabolic waste, can now be done softly with a machine. ‘But we are not heavy-handed in any of our massages,’ Piia Viskari assures. ‘Of course the massage has to be felt, it cannot be only light caressing. But our starting point is that the experience has to be pleasant from start to finish.’ For a layman the biggest surprise in Aurora Spa must be the radio frequency device. A direct quote from the brochure; ‘Radio waves travel through skin and warm up the skin tissue from the inside. Beauty Chic RF-device uses monopole radiation.’ ‘It is a device which can be used to make the skin firmer and even out the biggest wrinkles. It also clears the colour of the skin, as well as purifies and calms sensitive skin. The device has different programs for each of the treatments,’ Sanna Niemelä says. ‘Radio frequencies can be used in different kinds of body treatments, too.’ ‘Whether we use classic methods or the new technology, the main agenda is that when the customer leaves, they feel that they feel good and pampered,’ Piia Viskari and Sanna Niemelä assure.

WINTER 2016-2017

Something for everyone

Wide range of delicacies in Bistro & Café Ivalo A new café and bistro has been opened in the centre of Ivalo village. The place offers a wide range of ice creams, coffees and sweet or savoury pastries, that can be enjoyed in nice, quiet environment. If you are alone, the place is perfect spot for reading or just to sit and observe the passing crowds. Bistro & Café Ivalo offers free WiFi for its customers, so it is a perfect place to catch up with friends online or maybe do some work on your computer. The head of development, Pirkko Valkamo, is the person who is ultimately in charge of the bistro. She says that they have aimed to make the bistro a relaxed enviroment where everyone can feel at home. It is a place where one can

come straight from work for a coffee and a snack, or have a glass of wine in the evening with friends. - The room is actually divided into the bistro side and the café side, but we have not separated them with anything. The customers can sit on whichever side they wish, and there is room to dine at the café tables. Lunch and À la carte The Bistro & Café offers a lunch that has a large selection of different courses, and an á la carte lunch menu is also available. They offer some Asias flavours too, and on Sunday’s it is possible to have a nice and leisurely brunch. - We have tried to take into

consideration the needs of tourists as well as locals when planning the services, Pirkko Valkamo says. So, on top of the regular main courses, the Bistro & Café also offer a range of lighter snacks that go well with beer or wine.

International flavours from pure Nordic ingredients

- We have a good selection of special coffee brews and teas, that especially the foreign tourists have been hoping for. This is really needed in Bistro & Café Ivalo, where people of all ages and nationalities can enjoy themselves. Ritva Savela Photos: Pasi Ruotsalainen

Restaurant manager Marko Kokkonen (right) is happy to introduce the menu of Bistro. The menu connects local ingredients with international food trends to create excellent food that is appealing to the local community and well as foreign tourists. Kokkonen and the restaurant’s chef Jussi Hyvarinen have done a great job; they have created impeccable combination of different flavours that everyone can enjoy.

The recipe for Bistro’s reindeerburger is a safely guarded secret but whatever it includes has been thought carefully. The hamburger is served with herby coleslaw and juicy sauces, and it is definitely worth trying. Salmon salad in colouful, light and filling but it shouldn’t be ordered as a starter – unless the whole party is eating it together. The dish has everything one needs for a good meal; fresh fried salmon, a salad that is strong in flavour, together with sauces and toast. Tasty and filling!

The Devil’s Chicken has a Asian inspired flavours, but it suits the European taste buds as well. The thick slice of goat’s cheese gives a nice hint of sourness, which is balanced with great sweet-and-sour sauce. The whole portion is served with noodles. One of the many kinds of desserts Bistro offers are delicious ice cream portions. For example the mix of chocolate ice cream and liquorice is very tasty.

WINTER 2016-2017

More and more Christmas flights

First charter flights of the Christmas season are landing at Ivalo airport on the first of December. Approximately 90 direct charter flights are coming to Ivalo during the season, which is more than ever. Every year most of the charters arrive from Great Britain, but flights are coming from Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam as well. Christmas visitors usually stay in the area for a minimum of three days, and mainly stay in Saariselkä. One day visits to the area are no longer possible. Different tour operators organize attractions for their guests at the offset: last Christmas a reindeer and some elves were greeting the guests at Ivalo airport.

Holiday timeshares and cottages bring a lot of customers to Saariselkä during Christmas period. -The whole of December looks really good, says Jouni Kanerva from the central booking agency of Saariselkä. Many visitors from Russia come to the area every year and stay from the New Year’s to Epiphany: this is the typical time for holidays in Russia. Unfortunately visitors from our Eastern neighbour have been coming in less than earlier top years. -Luckily travellers from Finland and Central Europe have filled the gap well, Kanerva explains. (HS) Photos: Juha Kauppinen, Pasi Ruotsalainen (the big one)

Welcome to the Inari Municipality! Merry elves hope you enjoy your visit.

In Panimo Pub everyone can perform! Saariselkä Inn’s restaurant Panimo is known thorough the country. The restaurant has been extended with 100 squares additional space. According to the owner, Esa Lindholm, the extension gives completely new kinds of possibilities to respond to the needs of growing numbers of customers during tourist seasons. ‘The old and the new part of Panimo can be connected to one big space where different kinds of events and functions can be held. For example, we can provide a variety of programs on a larger scale than before,’ Lindholm says. ‘The new stage has new AV technology so that it is possible to hold performances such as theatre plays or even auctions.’ ‘We can provide a proper stage for professionals, but even amateurs can show their skills,’ Lindholm promises and urges all theatre enthusiasts to contact him. ‘In Panimo everyone can perform!’

During the construction the multifunctional purpose of the restaurant has been taken into consideration, and the restau-

rant can be divided into smaller sections if needed. One room is specifically designed to be a breakfast room that serves all of the

Inn’s customers. Lindholm highlights that the whole extension project has been made by using local contractors and materi-

als. ‘Our company’s principle is to use money in our own municipality.’

WINTER 2016-2017

One does not need to transport all sporting equipment to Lapland this winter, since a lot of the gear can be rented on spot in Saariselkä. Lapland Safaris is located downstairs at Hotel Riekonlinna, located at the centre of town. From Lapland Safaris it is possible to rent, for example, Nordic walking poles. For a little faster sports one can rent fat bikes that are suited for winter use. Skis suitable for cross-country skiing are available for both skate skiing and classic skiing techniques. For classic style skiers there are skin based skis as well as waxed base skis. Last winter the visitors got to try Hok skis, a mixture between skis and snowshoes. Due to their good grip it is easy to walk up the slopes of a fell, but they glide well and work as skis when coming down. They are a little bit wider and shorter than regular skis. Regular snow shoes and backcountry skis are
