Ski School Saariselkä variety for everyone Ski School Saariselkä provides instruction to both beginners and skiing enthusiasts alike.

In addition to alpine skiing, you can learn snowboarding, telemark skiing and of course, crosscountry skiing and adapted alpine skiing, the time of which must always be arranged in advance.

Our ski instructors are competent, enthusiastic and linguistically skilled professionals.

You can get instruction in Finnish, Swedish, English and German. Instruction is also available in French, Estonian and Russian by agreement.

The minimum age for participation in the ski school is 5 years, for snowboarding 7 years.

Ski School is closed if it is colder than -25 degrees centigrade.

You will find suitable equipment for yourself from Ski

Werneri doesn´t speak at all, but he runs a Finnish nationwide ski school that specializes in teaching children. You can meet Werneri at the Saariselkäski resort. His goal is to teach children to be versatile and multifaceted skiers. He is like a good commander – he leads by example and his groups willingly follow him to new challenges!

A good age for starting to learn to ski is about 4 years of age.

Children get to know their equipment, the ski resort and the ski lifts, in addition to learning how to ski with other children. The ski area rules and regulations are an essential part of this course.

You learn the critical skills of how to make turns while on skis, how to brake, and how to control your speed. The goal is to enjoy the skiing experience, to have fun and to improve your skills.

Werneri also helps children who already know how to use the lifts and get around the ski resort. He helps them learn to practice their skiing on different slopes to improve their balance and skills.

These children are typically 7-10 years of age, but age is not a limiting factor.

Saariselkä’s rental shop selection, which is comprised mostly of Atomic products. The selection includes: Alpine skiing equipment, Snowboards and boots, Telemark skiing equipment, Helmets, Snowscoot.

You can try Atomic’s new skis for free on wednesdays and fridays from 3–5 p.m. at our shop. The equipment rental shop is always open when the slopes are open.

REINDEER

Not all reindeer are the same! Some reindeer are tame and behave much like a family pet, like Rudolph- The Red Nose Reindeer. These hard working reindeer are trained to pull a sleigh and deliver presents to all of the good boys and girls all over the world. Most of the reindeer in Finland however are semi-domesticated. This means that someone takes care of the reindeer for part of the year when it is too cold or when there is not enough food in the forest to feed the entire reindeer herd.

Semi-domesticated reindeer in Finland live in the forest and in the fells, and sometimes they even enjoy swimming in the lakes and rivers. How many reindeer have you seen in the forest or alongside the roads licking salt?

Reindeer are very important to Sámi culture and history and to the tourist industry. There is very little waste of reindeer. The number one by-product of reindeer is meat. Reindeer meat is prepared in numerous ways: salted, air dried, warm smoked, cold smoked, roasted, boiled, fried, and sautéed with butter and onions. Historically, reindeer milk has been used for drinking and to make butter and cheese, especially among the Nomadic reindeer herders.

male reindeer retain their antlers until the following spring, only shedding them soon after giving birth in late April, May, or early June.

Antlers are very important in the production of Sámi handicrafts. You can find cast antlers in the forest or deep beneath the snow. Antlers are used for handicrafts, for example for buttons, for knife handles, for scrimshaw, and for all sorts of jewellery. Some people in Asia are said to have ground up the antlers into powder and mix it with hot water, as a sort of aphrodisiac, but scientific research does not yet conclude enhanced performance.

Reindeer skin and fur are exceptionally valuable materials. Did you know that reindeer have two types of hair? The hair that you can see in the winter is the guard coat. The guard hairs protect the short woollike hairs lying close to the skin. This hair is the winter hair. It is similar to the warm winter fur that your dog grows. The guard hairs are hallow.

The whole hair shaft is filled only with air. This is a very important adaptation for living in the Arctic. The hallow hair makes the reindeer float really well. That’s why reindeer and caribou are excellent swimmers. The trapped air is also warmed up by the body temperature of the reindeer, and keeps the animal from freezing during the winter. The Sámi Education Centre in Inari and Toivoniemi offer special courses throughout the winter for adult education. Here you can learn the traditional and modern methods of making your very own leather from reindeer hides, using very little or no chemicals whatsoever in the tanning process. Hides are obtained from the reindeer owners during the annual winter harvest and are used for making a wide range of items from jackets to shoes and boots, purses, cell phones and camera cases, lap top cases, hats, pants etc.

You name it, and someone is more than willing to help design and sew the best of your imagination.

Have you visited the local shops

and admired the 100% handmade Sámi handicrafts? Did you notice the gorgeous brown color of the leather? The locals collect bark from willows, alder, and birch trees, boil the natural fibers, and use the resulting solution during the natural tanning process of making reindeer leather. The final product is something to be very proud of. However, it is a lot of intensive work and also enjoyment, when you are able to recycle materials from the natural environment. The Sami people are extremely resourceful and respective of nature. These are footsteps to be followed all over the world!

The Winter Wonderland Mystical and Blue You might think that when the sun never rises you would be living in total darkness. In Lapland, you soon find out that the absence of the sun provides a profound and beautiful experience of being in a smooth, blue landscape.

The sunless days in the Saariselkä area last about five weeks, beginning in early December and lasting until the middle of January. In Finnish this time is called ”Kaamos.” During this time, it is not possible to work or read indoors without using a light.

The amount of time you can work outdoors without supplemental lighting is about two hours. And it really means that you cannot see the sun.

The effect of Kaamos on people varies widely. Some people are prone to depression, while others gain peace of mind in Kaamos time.

Although it seems that sunless days could be hopelessly dark, nature shows its rationality even then.

Since Kaamos is existing during the middle of the wintertime, the pure white snow, the moon, the stars in a cloudless sky, and the Northern Lights all serve to illuminate and create various shades of blue colour painted across the landscape. If you are lucky you can see in the moonlight thousands of sparkling diamonds on the snow. And if you keep an open mind you can find in this beautiful, calm, quiet winter wonderland a peace that you never thought could have existed. (RS/DS)

When the sun never sets It is a July night. At the hour of midnight the sun is still shining brightly, promising a wonderful new day. Perhaps you are in a boat on Lake Inari trying your hand at catching whitefish. The lake is calm, and there may be a thin fog over the water.

Everything is peaceful and quiet. Some birds fly near in order to see if you have succeeded in your fishing.

You may see one or two small boats in the distance.

Should the boats pass nearby, the people will wave their hands in greeting. The main thing you feel is the peace.

Uuvana, Diapensia lapponica, is especially well adapted to the exposed alpine areas and extreme conditions where it is found. It loves Lappish light and the nightless night. to shine brightly, and the air is thin and a bit cool. On the top of the mountain you and your friends seem to be the only people in the world.

And the main thing you feel is the peace.

The everlasting light reigns in Saariselkä, and in all of Lapland, from the end of May until the end of July. During this time, the sun never sets, the darkness never comes. There are people who say they cannot sleep while it is light all the

time. But why should they?

There are dark hours enough for sleeping in the winter time, all over Europe, all over the world!

It is clear to see why Santa Claus has these reindeer ”cattle.” It is quite impossible to imagine real cattle running over the mountains through deep snow. It would not be possible as their body structure is not suited for such an environment, and they would not survive. And very soon Santa Claus and all the Lapps would starve without meat!

There are different kinds of reindeer. There are Rudolph and his friends which are tame and live near the villages and in the centre of, for example, Saariselkä. LUOHTIMAJA

The reindeer, as opposed to the cow, is well adapted to living in the snow and the arctic. It is a long-limbed deer whose legs end with four-toed hoofs. The nails of the front toes are long, wide and half-moon shaped. The tracks of the reindeer often only reveal the imprint of these toe nails as it moves easily over the snow. And the most exciting thing is that in the soft snow, the reindeer spreads its extra toe, which means that the surface pressure is extremely low and the reindeer can run on the snow without wading.

For these reasons, reindeer are abundant in Lapland. You will find many reindeer dishes on the menus of local restaurants and all people living in Lapland eat a lot of reindeer meat. Santa Claus is happy when the local people, as well as the visitors, get to know how important his freely herding reindeer livestock is, as well as how delicious is the meat they provide. (RS/DS)

The Land of three Sámi people Inari is the only municipality in Finland with two land frontiers to the neighbouring lands and three populations of indigenous people: the Skolt Sámi, the Northern (Mountain) Sámi and the Inari Sámi.

The three distinct languages of the Sámi communities in Finland, have in the not so distant past, been on the verge of extinction. Today, however, all Sámi vernaculars in Finland are protected by the Language Act, under which the Sámi people have the right to use their mother tongue when carrying out official business and when using municipal and public services in their home district. In practice, this means that the authorities are obliged to provide interpreting services if necessary. In the municipality of Inari, more and more Finnish spoken communal officials are learning Sámi in order to serve the Sámi people in their own language.

Strong identity The Sámi have their own cultural identity of which they are proud. Thus, they want also their children to learn the language and the culture, and that the public school system provides the possibility for it.

Sámi children who reside in their home district may choose Sámi as their language of instruction at school or take Sámi as an elective subject.

The most endangered of the Sámi languages are Inari and Skolt Sámi. The two vernaculars are taught at day care centres using the ’language nest’ method. Youngsters breathe new life into the ancient tongues, when day care centres for Sámi children, who currently speak Finnish as their mother tongue, provide instruction entirely in their ethnic language Sámi.

Cultural autonomy In Finland, the Sámi have cultural autonomy protected by law.

The Sámi Parliament was founded in 1996 to carry out the duties involved in upholding cultural autonomy. Its 21 members are elected every four years. Independent of central government, they launch initiatives and proposals, issues statements on matters under their jurisdiction and decide how the funds directed to the Sámi people collectively are to be distributed. The Parliament also produces teaching material in Sámi and protects the rights of the Sámi-speaking people in social and health care matters.

The office of the Parliament is situated in Inari, also known as the church village.

Natural industry Reindeer herding, game hunting, and fishing are the main traditional Sámi occupations. The majority of, the approximately 200,000 reindeer in Finland are owned by Sámi. However, only some 10% of Sámi families make a living from reindeer herding.

Tourism however, is providing additional income to Sámi people besides the traditional occupations.

Not far from the village of Saariselkä, in the area between Lutto River and the Saariselkä Chapel, stands an old gray cabin. One can readily find it by passing through the Cross-country Skiing Gate and then following the Vellinsärpimä ski track for about 300 meters.

This old hut is called “The Ghost Cabin.”

But how did this hut get its name?

The Clattering of the Ghost Cabin An old wilderness hut at Karvaselkä The Ghost Cabin was once a wilderness hut located in the area of Karvaselkä between the villages of Kittilä and Inari. It was at that time situated alongside a bridle path through the wilderness. In the year 1997 the hut at that location was demolished. Afterward it was rebuilt in its current location.

This first wilderness hut in Karvaselkä had been built in the 1840’s. Over the decades it had been used for overnight sojourns by postmen making postal deliveries to wide-flung villages, as well as by random passersby. But the hut was used also by some legendary Lapland marauders, bearing the names of Haippa, Antti Hamari, and Menes-Jussa.

During the 1920’s, some travellers began to report strange goings-on at the hut. Some claimed that, as they approached the building, they had seen the reflection of a fire burning within through the windowpane, but when they entered, the fireplace was cold and black. Others maintained that the outside door had opened without any reason many times during the night and there was clattering heard coming from the attic. Travellers reportedly rushed out

of the building and preferred overnighting outside at a nearby campfire than staying inside the haunted hut.

A skeleton found in the attic During one of his overnight stays in the hut where he often heard clattering coming from the attic region, Postman Martti Mattus bravely decided to closely investigate the attic. What he found was astonishing! Beneath a layer of sawdust he found a human skeleton. He transported the bones to the Inari police station, where police thought it might be the skeleton of a woman by the name of Sofia Tammela. She had been a rich merchant, who had disappeared without a trace some years earlier while travelling the trail between Inari and Kittilä.

After the skeleton had been found and then buried in the graveyard of Inari, the haunting ceased for a time in the old wilderness hut. In the year 1938, the hut burned down in its entirety.

The ghost transposed During the late 1940’s, a new wilderness hut was built nearby

the ruins of the old. Unexplicably thereafter, the ghost of the old hut seemed to transpose itself to the new building. Many travellers and hunters claimed to experience the same kind of clattering and openings of the outside door while spending nights there, just like what had been reported a few decades earlier.

Some were joking, too, of course.

One man from Ivalo inconspicuously tied a rope from the hut’s window to its doorhandle. Over and over again he wrenched the rope, and the door opened and closed seemingly under its own power. His fellow travellers ran out shocked, and leaving the place, they became convinced of the mighty power of the ghost.

But it seemed the ghost got tired of exercising its antics. After a new road was built beside the wilderness cabin in the year 1970, reports of the haunting vanished little by little.

Still haunted?

An innocent-looking rebuilt hut now stands firmly in the area of the village of Saariselkä. Perhaps its new location, which is quite near the Chapel, has influenced The Ghost Cabin, for the ghost has been quite silent in its new location.

According to old tales it can

take some time before ghosts will start haunting new places.

It is not very extraordinary to hear creaking and clattering in old houses, especially those constructed of wood, which is affected by changes in temperature and humidity.

Additionally, a marten or other wild animal can often find their way into the attic and thereby create strange noises. An old wilderness hut in an autumn storm will always be an auspicious place for a good ghost story!

But who knows? Perhaps a new perky ghost will move to the new cabin, which carries with it such a rich tradition and history. Strange things may start to happen again.

Siula also hosts the exhibition Destination Northernmost Europe. The exhibition incorporates the newest advancements in technology while representing themes from the Northernmost regions of Europe: from Luosto, Finland to the Arctic Ocean and from Murmansk, Russia to Alta, Norway.

Main themes of the exhibition include history, culture, and nature. Audiovisual technology, photographs, motion pictures, multi vision presentations, texts, music, sound, light, and colours make the exhibition fascinating. The heart of the exhibition is a Panoramaic theatre 240° presenting four DVD shows with local music.

Information and shopping centre Siula in Saariselkä has a lot to serve. There are an information point, souvenir shops, crocery with local delicacies, clothing store, a restaurant for luncheon and cafeteria, just to mention a few.

The massive yellow building may look even a bit frightening if you hate to climb the stairs. But there is no reason to worry. In between the mighty stairs you can take just a few steps downward, open the door and find yourself in Lappi Shop with lots of gifts and other products.

From the basement you can take a lift to the first floor.

You can as well go in the Yellow house from the back of it – and you get right to the first floor.

All you need to know and wear in the nature The Kiehinen Customer Service Point in the first floor is a starting point for nature hikers. At Kiehinen you will find information and advice on the marked winter and summer trails in the area, and on the Urho Kekkonen National Park and the Hammastunturi fell area. The exhibition along the Ruija trail presents the

area’s fantastic and diverse hiking opportunities.

In the first floor you can also purchase all the clothing you need while hiking or skiing cross-country. SkiWear provides you from top to toe – even the children.

And you don´t have to be slim to get the outerwear!

In the very neighbour locates Kirsin Lahja. Full of souvenirs, sweet soft toys and unique handicrafts.

They fly through the sky to drop Christmas presents down the chimneys. They wait impatiently on the rooftops while Santa Claus puts parcels in the stockings or under the Christmas tree while all the good children sleep dreaming of new toys.

They take Santa Claus to the homes in Finland where the children actually see Santa; there are only a few countries in the world where that is possible.

They are faster than the wind and for most of the Christmas time they are invisible to everyone except to the people living in or visiting Lapland.

They are the team of Santa Claus about whom the story tells:

“He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimneys he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

And these are the Dashers and Dancers and Prancers and Vixens, which as well as Santa Claus, you can meet in Saariselkä before and after the Christmas season. They live there!(RS/DS)

Inari Municipality A municipality is a local unit of public administration, the smallest unit with a democratically elected administration. In line with the Local Government Act, the function of a Municipality is to maintain wellbeing and to foster sustainable development.

The Municipal Board is responsible for the administration and financial management of the municipality and for preparing, executing and watching over the legality of Council decisions. The Municipal Board safeguards the interests of the municipality and generally represents the municipality and

exercises its right to speak.

Inari is the largest municipality in Finland and it was established in 1876. It has a surface area of 17,321 km², of which 2,148 km² is covered by water and 15,173 km² is land.

Inari has a population of around 7,000, of which about one-third are Sámi, the indigenous people of Finland.

About 400 people in Inari speak Inari Sámi as their mother tongue.

The largest employers are the Municipality of Inari, the Finnish Border Guard, and Metsähallitus, which administers state-owned land and water areas. Tourism is also a

You’ll get it from your hotel or Safari offices) Also the marked ski tracks and snowmobile trails go from the Top.
