La Suisse devient, lors de son lancement le 30 mai 1910, le bateau «amiral» de la flotte CGN, qui l’a conçu pour recevoir les têtes couronnées et les grandes fortunes qui fréquentent alors les rives du Léman. Pour qu’il soit le plus grand et le plus élégant de tous les bateaux à vapeur du pays, la CGN choisit pour son salon, parmi cinq projets différents, des ornements sculptés particulièrement élégants, ainsi que des tapis de sol et des tapisseries de sièges d’Aubusson. Le navire a subi plusieurs modifications au fil des ans: abandon du charbon et passage à la chauffe à l’huile lourde en 1960, puis à l’huile légère en 1999, nouvelle grande chaudière unique, équipée de deux brûleurs, en 1971 (retubée en 2009 et qui est toujours en service). La silhouette du bateau est malheureusement altérée en 1960 par l’ouverture de sabords supplémentaires au pont principal et par l’installation de grands vitrages au pont supérieur puis, lors de la rénovation de 1971, par l’installation d’une nouvelle timonerie carrée et d’une nouvelle entrée latérale du salon de 1re classe, toutes deux peu esthétiques. Entre 2007 et 2009, La Suisse bénéficie d’une rénovation complète, grâce à des fonds privés mis à disposition par l’ABVL et les actionnaires de la CGN. Suite aux recherches de l’Association Patrimoine du Léman (APL), La Suisse retrouve également son apparence d’origine, ses figures de proue et de poupe sculptées, ainsi que son canot d’intervention historique. ✵ W hen it was launched on 30 May 1910, La Suisse became the flagship of the CGN fleet, designed to host the members of the royalty as well as the rich and famous who were frequently seen on the shores of Lake Geneva at that time. To ensure that was the biggest, most elegant of all the country’s steamboats, the CGN studied five different proposals for its lounge, opting for particularly stylish sculpted ornaments as well as Aubusson carpets and seat upholstery. The vessel underwent several changes over the years, with the replacement of the coal-firing system by one using heavy oil in 1960 before switching to light oil in 1999, and a new, large single boiler fitted with two burners in 1971 (re-tubed in 2009 and still in service to this day). The outline of the boat was unfortunately altered in 1960 with the opening of additional ports on the main deck and the installation of large glass panes on the upper deck and then, during the renovation of 1971, by the installation of a new square wheelhouse and a new side entrance to the 1st class lounge, both of which were less than attractive. Between 2007 and 2009, La Suisse benefited from a complete renovation thanks to private funds provided by the ABVL and the shareholders of the CGN. Through the research carried out by the Association Patrimoine du Léman (APL), La Suisse was returned to its original appearance, with its sculpted bow and stern figures and its historic lifeboat. ✵
