Spring Preview 2020 Vol. 90

L etter from the editor Dear Readers, In the name of Love, let all that you do be done in Love. Precious hearts, we are not in the position to save the foolish heart, we must unite and create a loving force that will banish all hatred that has entered the hearts of many lost souls. If we are to experience eternal bliss, we must first determine that we all share a responsibility in changing the world to create a foundation where love grows and blossoms in even the most barren and dark places. Choices are there for the taking, choose love, against all odds, the smallest spark of Love can ignite and feed the fire of passion, the underlying emotion that can clear the way along the path of fulfillment and content. In the stillness of solitude, set forward your intention, release it to the universe and go in faith, allow Love to brighten your doorstep, walk with hope and courage on the path of your journey. Weep not, tender hearts, it is still better to Love than to not experience Love at all. The teardrops that fall are immeasurable in a sea of Love. Love sustains, heals all who open their hearts to Love. The house of Love is built with honor and grace, kindness is the strength that keeps us all standing even in the wicked face of injustice, it is one kind gesture that can turn the page for someone in peril. Love is demonstrated everywhere we look with eyes wide open, we witness pure Love in the joy of a child’s laughter. The bird feeding her babies in the dawn of early Spring. The aging couple holding hands. The smile that greets you from someone that you have never met. The warm embrace from a friend that Loves you unconditionally. Do not allow yourself to drown in sorrow, we must lift up our hearts and align to our divinity, the greatness of all power has been given to each of us, it is up to us to use it in the aspect of Love. Healing humanity is possible if we awaken to the spirit of divine Love. Allow Love, Love thyself.

Yours in Health,

Jane Phillips Editor in Chief Publisher / Owner

There are many ways everyone can prevent heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer for women. The symptoms of heart disease can be very different from the usual signs of a possible heart attack that men can experience. The American Heart Association has designated that every month of February, women unite and wear red to create an awareness about heart disease that can go completely unnoticed in the lives of women, even at a young age. Many women are so busy in their roles of taking care of their families, a busy career, juggling all that they do on a daily basis, they can completely miss the possible symptoms. Prevention is the key. Caring for yourself and changing just a few things in your lifestyle can make a significant difference. Eating healthy, adding strawberries and blueberries to your diet is a great way to ward off heart disease. Making sure you eat a balanced nutritious diet is essential. Getting enough exercise creates a great defense to fight against heart disease. Choose something you love to do instead of dreading a daily routine of exercise, it can be as simple as taking a nature walk, make it a habit. Even the most fit, marathon runners are not immune to heart disease. Family history can play a part in whether it is possible for you to be at risk. It is possible that women can have real symptoms of heart problems and not realize it and may believe it is caused by something else. In reality, nausea/ vomiting, shortness of breath, dizziness, lower chest pain, back and jaw pain are just a few symptoms that women suffering a possible heart attack can experience. Listen to your body and pay attention, it is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and your family. Wear red and initiate “Go Red for Women,”awareness everywhere! Through education and learning we can all live healthier lives. For more information, visit goredforwomen.org.

TTexas imeless Journeys with Sage Girls Trip – South Padre Island by Kimberly “Sage” Pridemore We are happy to announce Infinity Magazines new and exciting feature, “Timeless Journeys with Sage.” Sage has been with the Infinity team for several years, her wisdom, knowledge and experience makes her a perfect fit as Infinity’s Travel Editor for this special feature. Each issue will be a wonderful adventure with Sage as she travels to amazing destinations. Sage will share her travels with helpful tips, interesting facts about her fun filled and relaxing get-aways! Texas Girls Trip – South Padre Island Looking for an island getaway that’s easy to get to, filled with great food and tons of activities for a girl’s getaway? Look no further than South Padre Island, Texas (SPI).

4

Since moving to Texas five years ago, I couldn’t wait to check out this part of the state. The barrier island has a little something for everyone. It is a beautiful slice of beachside (or bayside) that can be deeply appreciated by all of us beach lovers! For those of us living outside of Austin, this is an easy six hour drive out of Hill Country to the Gulf of Mexico, but an even easier 40 minute flight. If you are coming from outside of Texas, there are two airports that serve South Padre Island: Valley International Airport (Harlingen) and Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport. One of my girlfriends from Cincinnati recently moved down to SPI and has a condo on that beach at The Sapphire. She graciously offered her place for a late May girls’ weekend! What a treat! When planning your getaway, I encourage you to consider a condo or

beach rental, especially if you are visiting with a group of gals. The Sapphire is a luxury beachfront property with spacious balconies for dining al fresco, a gym, fabulous pool and easy access to the beach! It is well worth the splurge. Our girls’ weekend was attended by Mare (our host), Jeri (from Cincinnati), Doris, Mimi and me (each from Central Texas). First thing we did was stock our fridge with all the essentials for our weekend: Wine, water, snacks and breakfast fixins. This is a great reason for renting a condo with a kitchen. However, there would be no cooking of dinners on this getaway! There are too many fabulous restaurants to try. While we did have vehicles to drive, the best way to get around South Padre Island is on foot, especially since the area is only two square miles in size (much of which is shoreline). There is also a free public shuttle, Island Metro, which runs the length of the town - across Laguna Madre to Port Isabel. Start your day on South Padre with an early morning beach walk or yoga class. Taking advantage of the slower-paced island life is a perfect way to shift into your vacation mindset. We spent most of our days in our swimsuits. We enjoyed splitting time between the pool and beach! South Padre Island is home to more then three hundred days of sunshine every year. If you want a bit more action, you can add horseback riding or zip lining. There is also great shopping. Some of our favorite retail spots include Rica Clothing and Becky’s Place. Liam’s Steak House & Oyster Bar is a favorite dinner spot right on the water. This is fine dining at its best. The oysters are some of the most delicious I have ever tasted and you can’t go wrong with the whole red snapper or flounder. What kept us coming back, however, was dessert: Liam’s Chocolate Bomb to be specific! That alone is worth the trip to South Padre! We also had dinner at another local favorite, Sea Ranch, a couple of times. Some of the most outstanding dishes included the Alaskan King Crab and the Oysters Rockefeller. If you are looking for a casual dining option that’s directly on the beach, aptly name the Cafe on the Beach. Definitely don’t bypass the tropical drink offerings, as the Pina Colada is out of this world! Enjoy the ocean breeze at this totally al fresco spot, and order some coconut shrimp or a piece of fresh grilled fish for your main course.

Infinity

After dinner make your way to the SPI entertainment district where you’ll find plenty of bars with live music and fun crowds. One of our preferred after dinner spots for dancing and cocktails is Laguna Bob. It is a casual bayside gathering spot with excellent music. Stop in for a cold beer at South Padre’s own brew pub, the second oldest in the state of Texas, Padre Island Brewing Company. All their beers are brewed inhouse. There are also a number of beer flight options, as well as happy hour offerings. On our last day in Padre, we opted for a day of beauty at the Sapphire Spa. This signature Aveda spa offers everything you could possibly need, including hair, nail, and other must-have spa treatments. I enjoyed a fabulous sea salt body scrub in addition to an hourlong massage. Total bliss! Some of my favorite Zen moments on this trip were kicking back at the pool, chilling beachside, watching the amazing sunrise and many heartfelt conversations with my girlfriends over a bottle of wine. South Padre Island offers an amazing opportunity to relax, revive and renew your spirit, Texas style! Grab your boots, a cowboy hat and bff’s. Any day you spend on South Padre Island is going to be long and sunny. Sage About the Author: Sage Woman is an Intuitive and Spiritual Life Coach. combined with recommended home exercises which I still do twice a day. Each follow-up X-ray showed improvement in the curvature of my neck. I was experiencing more neck motion with less pain. Since starting chiropractic care, there have been no new episodes of vertigo. If I am feeling any change in ear pressure, I let them know at adjustment time. It really helps. I used to experience an average of three headaches a month. Since starting treatment, I have only had a few headaches in the last two years.

Jean Wolf and Dr. Patrick Baker I started coming to Baker Chiropractic and Wellness a little more than two years ago. I was experiencing pain with head movement of any kind. I had also been having periods of vertigo over the previous few years. After speaking with my regular doctor about the neck pain and if there was a connection between it and the vertigo, I was not satisfied with her solution of taking medications. That is when I decided to give chiropractic care a try. I was nervous about having someone work with my neck, but something needed to be done about the pain.

An unexpected benefit of chiropractic care has been a huge improvement in my allergies. After moving to Ohio 30 years ago, I started having really bad allergies every spring and fall. It was so bad that I had to use a prescription antihistamine like Zyrtek and Flonase nasal spray. Often I would develop a sinus or ear infection as well. The medications were able to stop the allergy symptoms, but they left me feeling tired all the time. I have not had to take a single antihistamine or use nasal spray in the last two years! I would not say my allergies have completely disappeared, but they have decreased to the point where I can actually live without medication except an occasional decongestant. I have not had any sinus or ear infections either. I no longer have to dread months of feeling like I am living in a medicine fog. The quality of my life has improved so much since coming to Baker Chiropractic and Wellness. No matter how I am feeling each time I go, I always leave feeling better. I encourage anyone who is suffering to give them a try. I highly recommend them!*

Treatment started with an exam and X-ray. I was actually listened to as I explained what was happening with my neck. It was so refreshing to talk with someone who cared and understood. The X-rays showed the curve in my neck was basically non-existent. He promised that chiropractic treatments could help me. Over the past two years, it really has.

The chiropractic adjustments and treatments started bringing relief to my pain right away. These were

Let it Be Done in Love! by Cynthia, White Flower

As we experience the preview of Spring, let all that we do, be done in Love! The prelude of Spring reaches out to say “renewal is coming.” It inspires as new life, born from the darkness of winter, reminds us that there is hope. It says that the sun will shine again, the warmth of green will fill our world again, and the pause of teeming life will resume. These are reminders of the continuous love of The Source, loving us, providing for us, showing us The Way. The Source says, “I love you and I will take care of you.” Daily, we are challenged, and on many different levels. We may find ourselves surprised about how we feel about certain situations. We may even be shocked at how we react. To bring the very best back to ourselves and to our world, we must live our lives from our hearts, remembering that we are loved. Acting and reacting from a place of love is necessary. Mother Nature continues to show us that it is necessary to remain optimistic. She shows us that

8

where there is darkness, light will come; where there is death, renewal will come; where there is decay, new life will spring up. Daily we are reminded that we are loved. To give that love back to the world is our job. We are the mirrors. We are here to be the love that we want in our lives. Love is always the answer. It is our reason for living. Love is our motivation. It is the light at the end of the tunnel. As we prepare for the winds of change, it is important to create a delicate balance between peace and harmony. To feel peace which leads to harmony, we must bask in the certainty that we are loved. Living every moment from our hearts is necessary. It is also a blessing. To remain poised within our hearts will allow us to hold the balance for ourselves and for our planet. Then it becomes our business to share our love with the world. Confucius said: “Where so ever

you go, go with all your heart. It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop. Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Kindness is an attribute of love. It is necessary for us to be kind to ourselves. The little things mean so very much. Begin to show yourself how very special you are by doing special things for yourself. Say consciously, “I will be kind to myself. I am loved, and I love me too!” Then, you can pass that kindness to others through the graciousness of your precious heart because you have become that love, personified. Jesus The Christ gave us examples of his selfless love throughout his lifetime. To continuously live in the vibration of love and to continuously exude and share that love, we become “The Christed One” thorough living out our lives in the vibration of love. All life is consciousness. The Ascended Master Kuthumi stated, “There is nothing in this world but consciousness. Your consciousness is where you are.” Looking at the mirror of Self through where we are in life will provide a gage for where we want To Be. Actively choosing to see the bright side of any situation will help to draw more positive results. We are not defined by our challenges. The Mystery School teaches that the purpose for the difficulties in our lives is to teach us that we can handle anything that we are faced with. Kuthumi adds, “Taking this to a point of mastery where we can still be kind and love everyone will result in peace in our hearts.” We are all on a journey back to our God Self, our resonance of oneness with The Source. Love provides the wings to take us there. Living in that vibration continuously will further that journey faster. Rumi reminds us to “Be kind to yourself, dear - to our innocent follies. Forget any sounds or touch you knew that did not help you dance. You will come to see that all evolves us.” Choosing to love, regardless of our challenges, in the end, is our only choice. It is the only thing that will move us on into fulfillment. As we embrace our blessings of love and kindness, we make the world a better place. Rumi shows us how our love lives on, “Your acts of kindness are iridescent wings of divine love, which linger and continue to uplift others long after your sharing.” Master

Infinity

Paramahansa Yogananda teaches us that “Kindness is the light that dissolves all walls between souls, families, and nations….. Persistence guarantees that results are inevitable.” Every time the programing nudges us to feel bad about ourselves say, “God created forgiveness for me. I forgive myself.” Feel it. Know it to be true. Find your peace. Yogananda reminds us, “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.” The heart is wise for it feels the truth. Let us live in our truth, from our hearts, giving life back the love that it gives to us.

T5hePractical Art of Unlearning Ways to Start Today by Jocelyn Marie Dietrich un·learn verb gerund or present participle: unlearning discard (something learned, especially a bad habit or false or outdated information) from one’s memory. After blindly following the masses for most of my life in terms of diet culture, the products I use and how I spend my money and time, I came to an epiphany at the start of my own healing journey. This epiphany was that I alone have the power to heal and it is my bodies innate right to allow it to do so by using natural and alternative methods. I don’t have to be trendy and following the crowds hasn’t done me a lick of good in my 30 something years here on earth. I don’t blame myself or you for following what everyone else is doing and being lured into this culture of trends and fast information. We are programmed from a young age to just go about our business without much thought. We are inundated with information from morning to night and most of it doesn’t fall on the positive side. We are hunched over, tuned out and stressed out. We have lost faith in our self and in our body to do what it needs to be done to take good care. And what’s worse? We are disconnected from our intuition. This realization was very freeing to me albeit slightly daunting and so began the start of an obsession to unlearn and dig deeper for the raw truth. Here’s the thing, you and I can live a more intuitive life. It’s ok to slow down, take a breath, and disconnect from the masses. It’s ok to walk the opposite path. Give yourself permission too and see what happens! The process of unlearning can be overwhelming when you take the time to really think about it but is a process that can be so beneficial in all aspects of life. I would like to share with you 5 practical ways to start unlearning today. 1. Set Goals

10

Understand the why behind your desire to unlearn. Sit down with a good old-fashioned pen and paper and write down all of the reasons why you want to start this process. Ask yourself what your motivation is? Do you want a more productive and relaxing morning routine? Do you want to spend more time outside and less time hunched over a screen? Do you want to find more peace in your life? After you have written down your answers, set yourself small tasks and give yourself a time frame to achieve these tasks. Getting specific and goal setting is a great motivator to help the unlearning process along! 2. Ditch the diet culture and just eat real food I know this is a hard one for many to let go as we are often promised gold at the end of the rainbow – gold being losing 20 pounds in a small amount of weeks or that if we just count this many calories and get rid of X amount of carbs we will tone up and look sexier for the Summer time. But diet culture is so dangerous, and it will never end unless we ditch it and for good. Lets get back to what our ancestors did. Ditch the processed foods, eat more fruits and vegetables, buy in season whenever you can, cook from scratch and eat at home. Get back to basics and our bodies will thank us. 3. Disconnect a little every day Before you go to bed what do you do? When you wake up what do you do? I’m willing to bet that most of us despite best intentions reach for our phone and scroll mindlessly. Here’s the thing – this can disrupt a healthy sleep cycle and put us in a negative frame of mind to start the day. Try to replace the scroll hole routine with 10-20 minutes of walking outside or yoga in the morning and stretching, meditation or reading a good book at night. 4. Embrace Minimalism We have become a society of “stuff”. We want the next best thing yesterday and we will spend our hardearned money to get that. And then we wonder where all of our money went?? As we head into Spring I encourage you to think about where you can minimize

Feb / Mar 2020

and downsize. If it doesn’t make you happy, if you haven’t worn it in a year, if you are feeling suffocated by all this stuff – it’s time for a purge! Think about what can be donated, regifted and recycled before just tossing out into the trash as well. A decluttered home can ease feelings of anxiety and can make everyday tasks like cleaning and cooking easier. Take it step by step with just one area of your home and life at a time. Over time these little steps will add up. 5. Experiences over material things Try saving your dollars for interesting experiences over material things. Even though the internet has told you that you need the latest hottest shoes or this amazing brand of mascara – guess what, you really don’t! I for the longest time spent all of my money on clothes and makeup without much thought. I can’t believe I wasted all that money! Since starting my unlearning journey I have tried to prioritize experiences or practical things over material items I likely won’t care about in a year or two’s time. Experiences could mean

a memorable trip, doing something fun with friends or family or could even be something like paying off your debt.

WinhatYour Have You Planted ‘Relationship Garden? by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE Are you a gardener? If so, you are probably waiting with anticipation to see what blooms this Spring. Our relationships are like the different types of flowers we can plant, along with occasional “volunteer” plants we don’t expect. Did you plant some Spring bulbs in Autumn or seeds in a greenhouse? You know that under the surface roots are growing and before long new growth will pop up above the surface where you can see it. This is similar to how your inner self grows and matures before you see a “new you” on the surface or in your relationships. Did you plant some annuals? These are like 12

new relationships with people who are already blooming. Usually, what you see is what you get. You just need to nurture these relationships and prevent weeds. For many of us, though, we have a lot of flower beds full of perennials that need weeded or pruned now and then. These perennial relationships might have started as bulbs or seeds, like when we or our children were newborns, knowing somewhat might grow, but each season being surprised as each plant and relationship reveals a new stage of growth, and with it, new challenges. Each year our perennials come back, mostly like what they were before, but sometime bringing new blessings, blossoms or challenges that Feb / Mar 2020

naturally develop over time. Relationships are meant to grow. They may be similar, the people familiar, but not stagnant (hopefully). Not every stage is rosy, but each brings a deeper maturity to the relationship and the people in them. Sometimes in our perennial relationships, we get stuck in ruts, or unhealthy patterns that grow dead wood that needs pruned or weeds that need pulled or the plant may get choked out or die. These can be challenging relationships. If they are friends or colleagues, we might just distance ourselves. But if they are a parent, child or spouse, we often don’t want to lose the relationship and are faced with a decision to continue in an unhealthy relationship or to make room for new growth by pruning dead wood or pulling weeds. While weeding takes a lot of energy, it’s more obvious it’s needed. Pruning is much harder. You might be hesitant to make the first cut; you feel guilty or afraid you are cutting back or cutting out too much. When you’ve done all you can to change and grow yourself and a relationship is unhealthy, you need to set boundaries, maybe even take a break, so you aren’t choked out by the unhealthy undergrowth. If you’ve been in a relationship that’s gotten out of control, it may be time to train that unruly vine up a trellis. After making space, you don’t control the vine, you simply point it in a direction where it has more room to grow. One way to do this is to get therapy, yourself or together. If all you do is take a break and nothing changes, then nothing will improve. Self-therapy can be helpful, too. Take a course together, journal and talk about your relationship goals and needs. Find solutions that can move you both forward. So, as Spring approaches, take inventory of your relationships and do what you can to nurture them, water them, expose them to the brightness

Infinity

of the sunlight. Talk to them, ask them what they need, and try to give it if you can. If you have been experiencing inner growth, you are going to bloom any day. You want to bloom in healthy soil, free of weeds and dead wood. So set some boundaries out of love for yourself and your relationship and see what soon blooms.

Healing Grief Through Connections by Melanie Weichel I have only found profound love amidst the darkest depths of grief. We have all experienced the kind of grief where the rawness of the loss has left you feeling like you are standing naked out in an ice storm as the water freezes your entire being as the sleet cuts at your already tender red skin. Your body is wracked with convulsions from the shock of the loss. You have been shaken to the core. Your mind is as frozen as the slushy water that has bombarded you. Then experience the hollowness as you recognize that the only thing that can save us from this pain is ourselves. Your muscles literally are sore and tense as you try to get your brain to work right to recognize that it is time to take care of yourself. Time to ask for help from a friend, a family member, a therapist to assist you by honoring your truth as you tell your story. Slowly we begin to heal as we thaw our frozen hearts and seek the healing that only connection with others can bring. We honor our stories by sharing our experiences with others not for pity but for understanding and gratitude for the lessons that we have learned through such an intense period of loss. Connection is how we heal. Connection with others helps us rewrite our stories and our understanding of who we are. Connection is where our support that carries us forward lies. Connection with others can be terrifying after such a profound loss. We all have moments where we weigh the pros and cons of is it worth putting myself out there again? There is no right or wrong way to begin to establish or re-establish the connection with people who love you, and we all experience the hesitation of connecting with others for the fear of making yourself vulnerable to experience this depth of pain. Unfortunately, there is no easy step by step process to overcoming the fear of vulnerability but there are little caveats of wisdom that can be shared. Give yourself grace. Understand that there will be good days and bad days and that there are days that action, a song, or a memory will trigger a flood of emotions. Feel the emotions and allow your body to express the anger, fear, sorrow, or resentment. Allow for the emotions to flow through you as freely as a river. When you are ready to seek the connection

with yourself forgive yourself and understand that this is a part of your process and it is Okay. When I am feeling this way I sit in a lotus pose, placing my right hand on my heart and my left on my solar plexus. I imagine holding my son when he was a small baby as my breast. I envision the feeling of the unconditional love that I experienced in that moment of holding him to my chest. I then love myself with the same depth that I love him as I gently rock my inner self soothing her with unconditional love. Once rooted in that love I slowly at my pace move to complete a task that I know I will feel accomplished after I have completed it. Do self-assessments no matter what type of loss you have experienced connect with yourself and be brutally honest. Where do you still have fear, judgment, or feelings of low self-worth? In what ways are you self-sabotaging? What are you putting out there? Are you bracing yourself anticipated grief of losing people, the relationship, the job without even giving it a decent chance? If there are repeated perceived failures do the situations have any common factors? If you have had repeated toxic relationships have that blunt friend or family member meet them early in the relationship and talk with them openly and honestly. Don’t make excuses for the person. As always listen to your intuition. Ask yourself all of the hard questions and answer yourself honestly. Follow through with the changes that you would like to see. Forgive yourself. If you are experiencing guilt and shame or other emotions that impact your well being don’t forget to forgive yourself and others. The experiences that lead to the loss provide us with strength, wisdom, courage, focus, and drive. In short, if it wasn’t for the love that you felt or the grief that you experienced, as a result, you would not be the stronger, wiser, more adaptable person that you are today. You would not have the awareness, strength, and connection with yourself today. It is hard to recognize while you are in the depth of grief but to someone you are an inspiration to them to keep going in their own struggle. I am slowly and mindfully always tearing down and rebuilding myself and my relationships. I am constantly

laying the new foundation as new experiences shape my reality. I am constantly reaching out and forming new connections and completing my own selfassessments and checking in with my brutally honest friends for their honest insights. Growth through grief is a consistent ongoing process that takes acceptance and commitment to embrace the changes that will shape the outcomes that I desire in all levels of my life. My journey, like yours, is messy and I often wonder who thought that it was a good idea to leave me unsupervised and responsible for myself and others. I believe that at times we all feel that way and it is through the connection with others that we find our medicine that helps us face our challenges openly and with minimal fear, because we are never alone when we have our connection with our self, our creator, our family, our friends, our pets, and the earth angels that are sent to us to give us messages of love and hope when we need it the most. The path to happiness is paved with gratitude.

The Food that Loves You Back!

Artichokes are technically a thistle, the edible part of the artichoke is the bud inside the flower actually before it blooms. The most desired part of the artichoke is part of the thistle, called the “heart.

Artichokes are abundant in minerals and vitamins. Potassium included, this amazing blossom can help to regulate blood pressure and reduce levels of bad cholesterol while increasing good cholesterol levels.

Artichokes contain high levels of folate and phosphorus, with women who are expecting, folate is especially important because it can be essential in preventing birth defects and assuring a healthy newborn. Phosphorus increases bone and brain health in the body, creating density in the bones and helping to improve brain function for anyone who may experience deficiencies or want to enhance their health.

Studies show that consuming artichokes may promote regrowth of the liver, they have been known to be used as a liver tonic for centuries, helping to eliminate toxins from the body. They aid with digestion by improving gall bladder function, stimulating gastric juices and bile that could prevent gall bladder disease. With powerful anti-cancer polyphenols, artichokes

Shifting Gears

by Cynthia M. Brown

So another year has come. There is so much being said about the year 20/20. The year of seeing clearly….. 20/20. Ok, I get it. Enough already. This is also the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century; the 21st year of the 21st century actually. While I am sure there is a lot to ponder around the numbers, I have been thinking about my own life. I am not much for resolutions. I try to be more reflective rather than making sweeping statements of change each new year. I am going to be 58 years old next month. I can hardly believe I am so dangerously close to 60! I have a friend who started over at 59 and by the age of 71 he had built an empire of spice shops and was a much beloved culinary icon. Unfortunately, he was taken from us too soon but his example of what is possible is truly inspiring. So I am looking forward towards 60 and trying to decide what I want that next decade to look like. Now, mind, I love my job. I enjoy making people happy and i enjoy working with teens. Selling ice cream is a great way to go to work every day. The down side is the number of hours I work. I still have energy to work 50 to 60 hours a week but now the question is do I want to? I want to spend time in my garden and walking my dog. I want to swim more; cook more; read more; make pottery more; play music more; write poetry more; I want to snuggle more…. I have so much to do that I feel like work is almost in the way and yet I still need to work… I am not financially able to retire yet. I am soul searching about what my needs truly are and whether or not I could live within less means and what that looks like for me and my family. How do I make that happen? Do I reinvent myself as my friend did? I don’t have any answers right now. Frankly, since I am only 58, I have given myself this entire year

18

to try and figure out what gears to shift and how to shift them. I do know I want more working for a living and less living to work. I do know I am turning off the mobile device when I get home and trusting that emergencies are truly rare at work and that other managers are capable or they wouldn’t be managers. I am logging on only once a day on work days and not at all on off days. Just those small actions have given me more time for myself and my life. I feel like I have gained hours when I get home. I am not sure what other shifts I will make this year yet...I have all year to figure it out. I won’t be 59 for more than 375 days and since I can only live one day at a time… well. I’ve got time. Enjoy your year! I am taking the slow route and considering buying a tricycle for my commute!

Stone Four: Discern by Wayne Holmes

co-founder of Religious Recovery, an organization dedicated to healing wounds inflicted by religion or the religious. He is not opposed to religion, but he sees the hurts and endeavors to help.

“It is my responsibility to discern what works for me and what does not, always remembering that what may not resonate with me today may resonate at another time.

Wayne is the author of seven books including the title, Every Path Leads Home: Opening to Your Spiritual Journey. Learn more about Wayne’s healing work at ReligiousRecovery.org.

When we leave the familiar and branch out into the unknown, we take small steps and test the footing beneath our feet. We might have left a religious organization or been shoved out of it, but regardless of the circumstances, we must learn to walk on our own and find our own way. There are those who would approach us with their claims of knowing the right way and having the roadmap to get us there.

Wayne Holmes’ Set Your Course shares six months of reflections that will give readers a path to spiritual freedom and help them connect to their soul and inner spirit. Not only does it provide healing from past religious abuse, but also abuse of nearly any form, and beyond that, it provides a path towards taking solid control of one’s religious and spiritual journey.

We enter into these new alliances with trepidation. After all, our blind faith might have been responsible for our previous loss of spiritual grounding. The best advice I know to give is for us to learn to listen to the voice of The Divine. By taking one step at a time and checking for solid spiritual ground, we move forward even if it feels as if a one-legged turtle moves faster than we do.

Wayne Holmes’ Every Path Leads Home is a beautiful book of acceptance. Our lives on this plane of existence are of short duration, and we are all “headed home. Different faith experiences define “home differently, and each suggests a path or paths. For anyone who has been abused by the supposed rules and strictures of a church or congregation or pastor, for anyone who has come to see religion not as a faith experience but rather as a set of ironclad rules, for anyone who has grown weary of the struggle to find God by whatever name: Every Path Leads Home is a must-read.

Every Path Leads Home:

One of the most helpful lines in this step is the reminder that what doesn’t resonate today, might resonate at a later time. We might not be ready for certain changes and areas of growth. Some things might not resonate simply because they are so unfamiliar or because our former religious system taught that certain things were wrong, evil, or of the devil. These denouncements were meant to help, but often the result is closed-minded people who can’t be persuaded of any other point of view except what their former religious leaders tell them is truth. We question, test, discern, and use our Divinelyinspired common sense. By doing do, we will know what works for us and what does not.

Be Guided by Love by John Van Auken

Most all humans love love! We don’t always understand love. We often get hurt by love, especially unrequited love. And, despite our love for others, we often hurt them. But there is no questioning how much humans love love! It is the number one topic for songs and fairytales. Trying to avoid love is near impossible because Nature has built into our bodies some of the most powerful hormones for loving. Evolution’s unswerving drive for survival of the species has developed a human body that is loaded with powerful chemicals to help ensure the success of human bonding. The “love chemical” is phenylethylamine (PEA). When this is released in the brain of any human, he or she will feel uncontrollably amorous, romantic, and “turned on” by the person who is the object of these feelings. Follow this up with a little oxytocin (often called “the cuddle chemical”), and you have the lovemaking sensations of relaxed pleasure and attachment. For the relationship to endure, however,

20

endorphins must be released in the brain. If they are, then the love relationship endures. Edgar Cayce curiously correlated love with law – which is paradoxically. Here’s how he taught this: “The law of God is LOVE of God, and is not a hardship. Make your life and your love of your fellow man a living thing in your experience day by day. Smile oft. Speak gently. Be kind.” (262-109) To a 12-year-old Jewish girl Cayce taught: “The law of the Lord is perfect. Love of the law, love of the Lord is perfect. For, love is perfect if it is selfless in its reactions to associations one with another. The first and the last commandments are the whole law: Thou shalt love the Lord thy god with all thy heart, thy mind, thy soul, thy body; and thy neighbor as thyself . The rest only explains, only interprets, only manifests for the individual the

tenets of the law. For the law is love, and love is law. And the Lord is one in same.” (2905-3) The Greeks actually help grasp three major types of love, using the Greek words eros, philia, and agape. Eros refers to love that is passionate, intense, and sexual. Philia love is fondness and appreciation of another, beyond self. It is friendship, family loyalty, community ties, love for one’s work, and the like. Philia is associated with “brotherly,” as in Philadelphia (phila-delphi, city of brotherly love.) Agape love is God’s love for His/Her children and humanity’s love for one another. Agape love does not seek anything in return for its expression. However, agape love has an ethical standard and may therefore impartially determine another’s warranting love – something we acknowledge today as “tough love,” meaning a love that calls the other to higher levels of behavior. In the New Testament, written in Greek, many of the “love” statements used the word agape. When the monks translated the King James version of the Bible, they were so concerned that the English word “love” was too vague, not as clear as the Greek word, so they translated agape as “charity”! Agape love is akin to charity: caring for others without seeking anything in return. St. Thomas Aquinas called charity “the foundation or root” of all Christian virtues. The King James Bible is the only Bible using the word “charity,” all the many other English translations still use love. The Holy Scriptures are filled with encouragements to love. In the apostle John’s epistle (1 John 4:7-12), he wrote: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love .... If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.” Most have come to understand that Jesus did not mean literal death, but rather thinking more of what another may need than what self may want. Yet, this must not become self-destructive. No one could accuse Jesus of being a doormat of self-deprecating love. He often radiated a tough love. Those around Him often needed to hear the truth and a clear position on God’s ways, not pampering. Perhaps the best example is his discussions with Peter. One example was when Jesus explained that,

Infinity

“he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.” Upon hearing this Peter counter by suggested that they don’t go into the city, and thereby avoid the authorities: “Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, ‘Be it far from you, Lord; this shall never be for you.’ But Jesus turned, and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan; you are a stumbling-block to me for you mind not the things of God but the things of men.” (Matthew 16:21-23) For Peter’s sake he must realize that his thinking was that akin to Satan’s, desiring the ways that seem best to humans over those that are known to be God’s ways. Jesus loved Peter, but truth also had to be maintained. A key passage in the New Testament lays down a foundation upon which all other biblical perspectives on love may be understood. The scene is also fascinating. Jesus is at the temple in Jerusalem where pigeons are being sacrificed and the smell and smoke are everywhere. An official scribe working at the temple overhears Jesus answering questions and he likes Jesus’ replies, so he asks the teacher a very important question. These passages are in the Gospel of Mark: “One of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together, and knowing that Jesus had answered them well, asked him, ‘What commandment is the first of all?’ “Jesus answered, ‘The first is, Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this; you shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.’ “And the scribe said unto him, ‘Of a truth, Teacher, you have well said that the Lord is one and there is none other but God; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all burnt-offerings and sacrifices.’ “And when Jesus heard that the scribe answered well, he said unto him, ‘You are close to the kingdom of God.’” (Mark 12:28-34 RSV) (Continued on pg. 22)

21

(Continued from pg. 21) Notice how Jesus acknowledges the wisdom and understanding that the script has gained from his own personal spiritual search. Notice also that though the scribe is standing in the physical world, Jesus says that he is close to the kingdom of God. This reveals that the kingdom of God is not beyond this world. Heaven may be approached while incarnate. Additionally, notice how an official of the temple, in which the practice of animal and grain burning are part of the daily ritual, has come to know that these are not what God seeks. God seeks love from us; love toward God and toward our neighbors. Keep in mind that those who live with us are our closest neighbors, though we often take them for granted. They should receive our love. Let us do as Cayce directed: “Make your life and your love of your fellow man a living thing in your experience day by day. Smile oft. Speak gently. Be kind.” (262-109) John Van Auken About the Author: John Van Auken is an internationally renowned speaker, a long-time A.R.E. staff member, a current director at A.R.E, and a popular leader of A.R.E.’s tours to sacred sites around the world. Senior Pets – Challenges and Joys by Cindy Huff This issue we wanted to talk about a topic that is near and dear to Terri and I – living with and caring for senior animals. Six of our eight animals are considered seniors, so we are in the middle of the challenges of keeping them all healthy, happy, and reasonably comfortable. When we choose to bring an animal into our lives as a pet, we see them as they are at that moment in time. Most of the time the are young, vibrant, and reasonably healthy. We make a promise to them in that moment, to take care of them for the rest of their lives. It is a lifelong partnership. When that pet ages and begins to experience normal aging issues – diminished sight, hearing and mobility, incontinence, confusion, and possibly serious medical issues such as hyper/hypothyroidism, diabetes, high blood pressure – suddenly the weight of that lifetime commitment hits us, and we are often saddened and confused by it. We don’t know what to do to help. We wanted to offer some things that we have found to be helpful with our aging dogs, cats and horses. First and foremost, your vet is a vital resource as you manage the health of an aging animal. Consult with them regularly. Understand that your vet may want to do yearly or semi-yearly checkups and bloodwork, particularly if you pet has high blood pressure, thyroid issues or diabetes, or is on routine medication (for example, pain medication). Communicate and partner with your vet to make sure your pet has an optimal quality of life. If you pet has decreased mobility issues, take a look at your environment. We have 2 senior dogs – one with severe arthritis, the other with normal neurological aging issues that cause him to lose control of his hind legs at times. We realized our back steps that they use to go into the yard were steep and not very deep, so we replaced them. We have vinyl plank flooring in much of the house, and these dogs were also losing traction. We put in some runner rugs to help them. We found a veterinary chiropractor/acupuncturist

Feb / Mar 2020

(Dr. Brittany Koether) who comes to the house every other week and treats both of the dogs. She has recommended moderate walking, massage, and stretching programs for both dogs. We also work closely with our regular vet with the arthritic dog to manage his pain using a combination of medications. This may sound like a lot, but both of these dogs are alert, happy, and enjoy their food, naps, and lap time. They are enjoying their lives. One of them is also urinary incontinent, so we have made a game out of putting on his “pants” (belly band). He has “pants” in many colors, so we make a big deal about which one he is wearing – green, blue, polka dots etc. He doesn’t seem to mind a bit. Older cats can also have issues such as high blood pressure and hyperthyroidism, as well as other issues. Cats will hide what is wrong from us as long as they can, because they are both predator and prey animals. If you see something wrong, it is best to get them to a vet as soon as possible. Like dogs, cats may need to be monitored carefully, and their medications may need to be adjusted until the dosage is correct. We have a cat with both conditions, as well as a digestive issue, and our vet has worked closely with us to find the right medications that he can tolerate. We have a 31 year old horse who is retired. We have worked hard with our vet and the people we board with to come up with the right diet to keep his weight up. Horses will normally look a bit thinner as they age, because they lose muscle on their topline, sides, and hips. Weight management is key. This horse also reacts to some routine equine vaccinations, so we work cooperatively with our vet to make sure he has the vaccines that he must have, but to eliminate those that he does not need. He does not leave the farm, and has minimal exposure to other horses besides the herd there. Our vet also suggested a supplement to support his overall health, and he is doing well with that. He loves to be brushed and to hang out with people and with the other horses. He is a happy horse. There are various holistic modalities available to help your aging pet be more comfortable and happy: energy work (eg Healing Touch for Animals, Quantum Touch, Reiki), massage therapy, laser therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustment, Chinese herbs, CBD oils … these can be key supportive care

Infinity

that facilitates traditional veterinary care. The field of physical therapy for animals is also emerging as a helpful tool. Encouraging your older pet to stretch as they are able is also very important. For example, most dogs will stretch (“downward facing dog”) to stretch their shoulders, backs and hips. We have dubbed that “yoga Beau” in our house, and I will get down on the floor in child pose and invite Beau to do “yoga Beau” with me as a game. He loves it, and it gets him to stretch. This all sounds very expensive, and it is. That is the commitment we make when we take on a lifetime partner, to take care of them to the best of our ability for their entire lives. Anticipate that you may have more costs as your pet ages, and try to plan for it. Bottom line is to do what you are able to do within your financial means, and just love them for exactly who they are. Thanks from Terri and I and our seniors – Beau, Lukas, Simba, Sophia, Diana, and Rohan.

Cthe hange Your Life with Sound of Your Voice by Jill Mattson If everyone stopped talking, our personal energy would drop. Our voice creates vibrational energy – that subtly changes us! Ancient people knew the power in sounds and words - not from the word’s meaning, but from its sounds. The power is soft and subtle, but ever influencing us. Throughout antiquity spiritual groups emphasized words and our voices. The Sufi Master Hazrat Inyat Khan said, “As we delve into the mysteries of life, we discover the whole secret is hidden in what we call words. All occult science, all mystical practices are based upon the science of the word or sound.”1 The power of a word is not its meaning, but its energy – its sound. People carry energy and intent in their voices. For example, Jesus’ miracles were triggered by His verbal

commands. His personal energy was embodied in the energy of His words. His words were crucial part of His miracles. Hazat Inyat Khan commented, “The fortunate person has a different voice… than the one who is not so fortunate. When you compare the voices of great people with the voices of others, there is a great difference. From the voice, you can determine the stage of a person’s evolution. You do not need to see him; just his voice will tell you how far he has evolved. The character of a person is evident in his voice. And there comes a change in the voice with every step of spiritual evolution.”2 Khan continues, “Healing that comes through a change of mind or feeling, instigated by personal will, simply does not have the sustaining power to

be permanent or complete. True healing requires the transformational ability of sound.”3 Many masters agree. Theosophist Alice Baily wrote that only sound gives us transformative power to substantially improve our personality. This is best done with the sound of one’s voice. Few people realize that they can change their life force with their speaking voice. We can spend part of every day to develop our voice. Our words exchange energy with who we are. It is not just that the voice is a reflection of who we are, but when we can change our voice, we change who we are. Change is easier and more powerful by changing your voice than using our will power. We can increase our vitality and power by using our voices for healing. Jill Mattson will be in an interview on You Wealth Revolution on how to change your voice for a multitude of benefits. Throughout time, there are many ways to change your life with your voice. Ancient Egyptians drank water, after soaking words written on something edible that had soaked in the water. Drinking the water - altered by the written word - was done to drink beneficial energies. Historian Schwaller de Lubicz4 discovered that the ancient Egyptians used “sound formulas” – not comprised of words nor meanings, but… “Sacred or magical language that is not understood with definite meanings. The utterance of certain letters or words which make no sense in themselves creates physiologic changes .”5 Magic words are more a subtle science than capricious child’s play. Language sounds have been used as subtle energy healing power for the body, mind and soul in former times. For example, the Taoists from ancient China wrote that: * Ssss helps the lungs * Who is for kidneys * Sshhh is for liver * Haw is for heart * Woo is for spleen As you speak, pay attention to where sounds resonate in your body. Which sounds are enjoyable, making you lighter and feeling better?

Other languages and cultures linked sounds with very specific healing benefits! “Hu” is the mystical Sufi’s sacred sound... “Hu” creates a burning sensation in one’s head if you say it over and over. “Ha,” also begins with H, stimulating glands, especially the thymus. Today, the medical society confirms that laughter sounds (“ha, ha” sounds) boosts the immune system. Masaru Emoto provided pictures revealing the impact of words on freezing water crystals. Beautiful shapes were created by kind and loving words. How do your words sound? The sounds of words subtly forms matter. Beautiful words create beauty in a subtle form. Can you imagine the impact of speaking with love, in every word that comes out of your mouth? Who would have ever imagined that we have such a powerful force – hidden within our very selves…..our voice. Works Cited: 1. Khan, Inayat, Hazrat. Tea Drinkers Shown

to be More Healthy

were also free from ASCVD for 1.41 years longer than their non-tea drinking counterparts.7

Just as important for your health as what you eat is what you drink. Hopefully, everyone who reads my newsletters is drinking plenty of pure water a day and completely abstaining from soda.

To ensure scientific validity, 1,896 study participants were excluded because they had a history of ASCVD or cancer and 2,465 were excluded because information about their tea drinking habits was lacking. While there have been medical studies about tea drinking and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD), this study added new information to what is known, say the scientists:8

Around the world, coffee and tea are, after water, the most common beverages people consume and that is a good thing. Unlike soda, which has many negative health effects, both organic coffee and tea are leading sources of antioxidant polyphenols, which are beneficial substances.

“Several previous studies assessed the association between tea consumption and CVD and all-cause mortality, but the results remained inconsistent. Studies among Welsh men and US adults did not observe significant inverse associations of tea consumption (mainly as black tea) with CHD or CVD risks.

Scientific research has linked coffee to a lower risk of heart failure and stroke,1 as well as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, diabetes and some types of cancer.2 Another study showed that it may be associated with a lower risk of cognitive disorders.3 Tea is also a healthy beverage linked to impressive benefits.

In the Japanese population, green tea consumption could reduce the risk of CVD while there was no unanimous conclusion on all-cause mortality. Previous Chinese studies found inverse association between tea consumption and CHD incidence but the reports for stroke and cause-specific mortality were only based on men.

by Dr. Joeseph Mercola

Writing in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology,4 researchers found that drinking tea at least three times a week is linked with lower risks of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death. “The favorable health effects are the most robust for green tea and for long-term habitual tea drinkers,” added Xinyan Wang of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing, China, the study’s first author, about the research.5 More Reasons to Drink a Much-Loved Beverage

According to our study, habitual tea consumption is associated with a lower risk of ASCVD incidence (including CHD and stroke), ASCVD mortality (especially for stroke), and all-cause mortality and these inverse associations were persistent across subgroups. … The observed inverse associations were strengthened among participants who stuck to their habit all along. Similarly, previous studies in the USA and in China also reported more evident health effects with longer years of tea consumption.”

Cardiovascular disease is the world’s leading cause of premature death, write the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology researchers, and tea is one of the world’s most widely consumed beverages, especially in Asia. The aim of the study was to examine the association between atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and all-cause mortality and tea drinking.6

Green Tea Led Benefits in the Study

Results from observing 100,902 participants in the study over a period of years found that habitual tea drinkers lived 1.26 years longer than their counterparts. They

“Habitual green tea consumption was inversely associated with the risks of all study outcomes except CHD mortality, as compared with those never or non-

In the study, not all participants drank the same kind of tea. Forty-nine percent of habitual tea drinkers who participated consumed green tea, while only 8% drank black tea and the remainder, 43%, drank scented or other types of tea.9 Green tea, it turns out, was the most healthful of the tested teas.

habitual tea drinkers. No significant association was observed for black tea … Tea, especially green tea, is a rich source of flavonoids including mainly epicatechin, catechin, and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), etc. Mechanism studies have revealed that these bioactive compounds could attenuate oxidative stress, relieve inflammation, enhance endothelial and cardiomyocyte function … Tea polyphenols might be oxidized into pigments and inactivated during fermentation, which might be partly the reason why black tea was prone to be less associated with health benefits in many studies.”10 There are other reasons black tea may not be as beneficial, speculates SciTech Today:11 “Black tea is fully fermented and during this process polyphenols are oxidized into pigments and may lose their antioxidant effects. Second, black tea is often served with milk, which previous research has shown may counteract the favorable health effects of tea on vascular function.” Black tea also has almost five times the caffeine content of green tea, which is important for those seeking to reduce their caffeine consumption to realize (although in some cases, caffeine may be beneficial). It is also known to stain the teeth.12 Previous Tea Studies Have Shown Other Benefits Tea, particularly green tea, has been linked with other health benefits. In one study of prostate cancer (PCa), the second most frequently diagnosed cancer, the journal Medicine, Baltimore, wrote that “there was a trend of reduced incidence of PCa with each 1 cup/day increase of green tea.”13 “Our dose-response meta-analysis further demonstrated that higher green tea consumption was linearly associated with a reduced risk of PCa with more than 7 cups/day. In addition, green tea catechins were effective for preventing PCa.

consumption was linearly reduced PCa risk with more than 7cups/day and green tea catechins were effective for preventing PCa.” A 2017 study in the journal Nutrition and Cancer14 found a significant inverse dose-response association between green tea drinking and liver cancer risk. That inverse association increased with years of green tea drinking and when four cups a day of green tea were consumed. Studies have also associated green tea with reduced risk of depression,15 obesity,16 stroke17 and bone thinning,18 and improvements to vision.19 A central reason for green tea’s benefits is its catechin epigallocatechin-3gallate, which helps your arteries relax and improves blood fIow.20 To receive more benefits from the catechins found in teas, which are natural phenol and antioxidant compounds, you can add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, which will help absorption.21 However, beware of nonorganic teas that are grown in polluted environments — they can contain heavy metals or fluoride, which could lead to skeletal fluorosis. Instant tea may also contain excessive fluoride.22 Teas May Also Increase Longevity An epidemiological project called Blue Zones seeks to document and analyze the lifestyle particulars found in communities that have the highest number of people who live past 100. Here is what National Public Radio reported:23 “The people in these five regions in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the U.S. that live to be 100 have a lot going for them. Genes probably play a small role, but these folks also have strong social ties, tightly-knit families and lots of opportunity to exercise. As we were parsing through the dietary secrets of the Blue Zones, as described in author Dan Buettner’s latest book, The Blues Zones Solution, we were struck by how essential tea drinking is in these regions.

In conclusion, our dose-response meta-analysis evaluated the association of green tea intake with PCa risk systematically and quantitatively. And this is the first meta-analysis of green tea catechins consumption and PCa incidence.

In fact, Buettner’s Blue Zones Beverage Rule — a kind of guideline distilled from his 15 or so years of studying these places — is: ‘Drink coffee for breakfast, tea in the afternoon, wine at 5 p.m.’

Our novel data demonstrated that higher green tea

In Okinawa, Japan, for example, Buettner watched one 104-year-old ‘make jasmine tea, squatting in the corner and pouring hot water over tea leaves as the room filled with a delicate, floral aroma.’ Indeed, Okinawans call their tea shan-pien, or ‘tea with a bit of scent,’ which combines green tea leaves, jasmine flowers and a bit of turmeric.”

reduce free radical damage that can target cell membranes and DNA, and raise your risk for chronic illness. There are more coffee drinkers than tea drinkers in the U.S., yet the varieties and benefits of tea are worth exploring and making part of your diet. People who drink tea are enjoying many health benefits as they also partake of an enjoyable and comforting beverage.

More Teas With Health Benefits Black and green tea are probably the teas that are studied the most frequently, but oolong, dark and white teas also have benefits. Like black and green tea, they come from the plant known as Camellia sinensis, although hibiscus tea, described below, does not. • Oolong tea — This tea is great for weight management and heart health: The polyphenols in oolong tea help control fat metabolism in your body by activating certain enzymes. A 2001 study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that participants who ingested either full-strength or diluted oolong tea burned 2.9% to 3.4% more total calories daily.24 • Hibiscus tea — High in vitamin C, minerals and antioxidants, tea made from hibiscus sabdariffa (also called Sudan tea, sour tea and roselle) has benefits for overall health. Studies suggest it may improve blood pressure, help prevent metabolic syndrome, protect your liver and even provide anticancer effects.25

In a study in the journal ARYA Atherosclerosis, consumption of tea made from hibiscus sabdariffa led to a decrease in systolic blood pressure in healthy men compared with the placebo.26 • Matcha — Matcha is a type of green tea, but unlike regular green tea, in which you steep and discard the leaves, when you drink matcha you consume the entire leaves, which are ground micron fine. Studies indicate that 1 cup of matcha may provide the antioxidant equivalent of 3 cups of regular green tea and as much as 137 times more antioxidants than low-grade green tea.27 • Darjeeling — Made from the Chinese variety of Camellia sinensis, darjeeling tea contains two complex antioxidants called theaflavins and thearubigins that help neutralize harmful free radicals, and potentially

Artist of Life,

Drawing from Within by Patti Lightflower

A Journey of Creative Collaboration by Patti Lightflower Welcome! Come in and join us in this newly forming creative heart space! Did you know that expressing yourself creatively is healing both emotionally and mentally? It can also fulfill a need to express ourselves physically in a material way. Why do we create? Perhaps this is one of the ways we are “made in God’s image” and by tapping into this power of creation we also open the door to other powers such as the healing power of expressing our emotions via a creative channel. A doorway to the heart and soul awaits you. Ride along or join in with us on an adventure into a yet to be created but carefully dreamed and envisioned journey. Leave all worries of inadequacies behind, we’ll teach and learn along the way. No skills are needed, this is heart work, and you already have all it takes for drawing from a creative life force within. Apron Strings, Wings & Things Aprons are handy for people like me whose first instinct is to absentmindedly reach for something I’m wearing to dry my hands or wipe off messy food, paint or sticky glue from my fingers. I’ve found myself drawn to aprons for a number of years, collecting images and ideas along with acquiring vintage patterns. Over the past year or two, ideas have been springing up in my head and all around me inspiring a vision of a creative journey involving making an apron from recycled clothing and exploring self and techniques. As myself as others collaborate to be your tour guides, we’ll explore together creative possibilities in this guided creative journey. Together we’ll make an apron to cover ourselves embellished in ways yet to be imagined, with treasures, findings, embroidered wings (if you like), pockets and strings to hold it all together.

You’ll need for this project one oversized, heavy cotton, long sleeve, work shirt. White or light blue denim would work best. Most of the other items you’ll need for getting started you may already have. We’ll head down this creative path together for the coming year with new guidelines and suggestions in each issue. At year’s end you’ll have created a protective garment into which you’ve poured your heart and soul.
