THE COVER´S CHALLENGE By Thereaver Barrymore I LOVE December´s holidays! I love Christmas and New Year´s Eve. Gosh, this year has finished too fast! Oh, I'm in love with Christmas trees, gifts, and the magic that surrounds us and inspires this time of year. I thought a lot before creating the cover for this issue. Nothing could illustrate it better than a classic icon of the biggest festival in the world. I already had a perfect snow globe of the Sway's Creations. So, I thought it would be beautiful to use it on the cover. Then, nothing could be better than giving it a touch of color and magic. Magnificent! I also would like to take this opportunity to welcome Silton Mindes, who is now part of our team! And to you all, I wish Happy Holidays! ★ Thereaver Barrymore INNERWORLD MAGAZINE Art Director

SPECIAL Let’s Party! It is time to celebrate and socialize… Well… actually we can celebrate and party whenever we wish, as life is made to be happy and enjoyable. There are thousands reasons to celebrate and we are pretty good doing it. Some parties are held in honor of a person, a day or event. Imagine if we make a list of special dates to celebrate, besides: Birthday, mother, father, grandfather, sister/brother, aunt/uncle, nephew, Valentine, Easter, Farewell, Fundraising, Carnival, Mardi Gras and the sweet pajama party day… Gosh!!! It would be an endless list, as each culture and country has also special holidays. So, we really have many reasons for being happy and to party!
28 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
The history of the world shows an amazing development of social environments, since Homo sapiens and how human beings enjoy socializing, conversation, and celebrations since we exist. As civilizations developed perforce on the banks of rivers, people used to celebrate with rituals and parties, to thank for the water for their plantations. A good example for those celebrations happened near the banks of Egypt's Nile River. Archaeologists have found many traces of parties and celebrations since our prehistory and some historical events bring explanations about religious holidays, folk beliefs and rituals, solemn occasions and ceremonies. All continents and countries enjoy celebrations and somehow it makes people become equal! So, if we love parties since the world is our world… why shouldn’t it be
different in our Second Life, our virtual world? Hum… maybe we could create the official “Prim Day” or the “No Lag Day Parade”… SL is a very fertile soil to party and some people really do it a lot! We can find endless reasons to call friends to celebrate there and this is just the start! If you observe closer, we could party everyday, but since September it seems we have more holidays and reasons to party. Some celebrations are religious, some are pagan or to celebrate a local historical date or even the Festival of lights, colors and life… It is really wonderful. We welcome and respect all celebrations, such as Jewish, Muslim,
Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist and all religions holidays and festivals. Some unique holidays and religious events we already had this year in RL and that people also took to SL: Rosh Hashanah - commonly referred to as the "Jewish New Year, it is the start of the civil year in the Hebrew calendar. Ramadan - the Islamic month of fasting. Fasting is meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty and spirituality. Holi - also called the Festival of Colors, is a popular Hindu spring festival. It is very colorful and people throw colored powder and water at each other. Diwali - is a significant 5-day festival in Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism, which is celebrated according to the lunar Hindu calendar. It is known as
30 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
the "Festival of lights", but the spiritual meaning is "the awareness of the inner light". Thanksgiving - it is a harvest festival to express gratitude in general. This holiday used to be celebrated primarily in Canada and the United States, but it has spread now a days. Halloween – people wear costumes and attend costume parties, and some love telling scary stories. It has roots in a Celtic festival and the Christian holy day of All Saints. It is celebrated on October 31. These are just a few examples of holidays, as it depends on each culture. And now, December is our playground of parties for Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's Eve (for the Gregorian calendar), just to mention some celebrations. Many cultures use fireworks, colors and music during their parties and doesn’t matter the
language, race, faith or culture‌ we will all celebrate and enjoy it a lot according to the event. I would like to mention also that this article talks about many cultures and not about any particular religion or celebration. There are so many regional parties, that it would be a huge text. So, the most important point here is that everybody and their beliefs and culture are completely respected by us. If the party is a religious celebration, it brings reflection and introspection. It is an event to meditate, pray and maybe sing special songs and exchange some
32 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
gifts according to each culture. Some events and celebrations amaze us per the business they improve, as people want to celebrate, exchange gifts and also decorate their houses, prepare food and get dressed properly. Second Life becomes a mess of lag during these celebrations like, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween and of course, Christmas. We can’t deny that business and creators are thankful to these dates and one example is the fashion consolidated group that has thousands of members getting advantages of each event. Many people make lots of money. And the main point here is how
brilliantly some creators have showed special events and holidays, from different countries in Second Life. Thematic decoration, costumes, outfits, buildings and even landscapes amaze everybody and we can enjoy each special and unique culture and celebration. Probably, most of us would never know or see some unique holidays; maybe, because we live too far from some cultures. So, this is the magic of SL and its borderless nature, which can be a fantastic exercise of tolerance and respect for people and their beliefs. We’ve explored our metaverse to find some good examples of different
parties and events and found something very special to share with you. What a beauty and touching representation! It is simply gorgeous as you can see for the amazing photos‌ But, as many western countries are Christians, it is also usual to see more decoration and Sims, which are perfectly decorated by some builders to celebrate Christmas. It is celebrated
34 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
throughout the Christian population on December, 25 to commemorate the birth of Jesus, but there are some alternative explanations, like Isaac Newton argued that the date of Christmas correspond with the winter solstice, and some said it was to correspond with the Roman solar holiday and to maintain the tradition. There are many controversies about its origin and it could be a nice discussion for another article.
Anyway, this is the date we have to celebrate Christmas. It is also common to see many nonChristians enjoying the celebrations as a cultural festival. We can’t deny it has become a major event, especially because of business involved in this holiday and the activity of gift-giving, when sales increase dramatically. People expend lots of money to decorate their houses and stores, which attract more customers. How to
resist (especially kids) to some cute and so beautiful toys and temptations they oer during this holiday? And it can be seen also in our Second Life, when people spend lots of money to have beautiful creations such as sculpted trees, Santa, carols and toys. Of course, it is always very important to remember the inner reason of this Holiday, which is more spiritual than material.
But, it is always joyful the nice popular mythological figure of Santa Claus. Besides Jesus, the real honored one, Santa is another symbol of Christmas and he is known as the good old man who gives gifts for children. Santa is generally believed to be connected to Saint Nicholas and elements from pagan Nordic and Christian mythology. If you are Christian or not, it just doesn’t matter as all we want is to celebrate good feelings, actions, moments with family and friends and to remember the spiritual lessons we can learn.
ourselves to New Year’s Eve, the day before New Year's Day. This day is traditionally a religious feast, but since the 1900s has become an occasion for celebration of the night called New Year's Eve. It is celebrated with parties and social gatherings and the main reason is the transition of the year at midnight. It is very symbolic for most of all that a new year can bring changes, good milestones and make our lives better. The fireworks are the beautiful frame for the dreamers and many people make their “New Year's resolutions List”. Hum… Do you really take your list seriously? Oh please, give me a break! LOL
Happiness, forgiveness, love and joy should live in our hearts everyday and not only during some special dates. And after these beautiful, touching, spiritual or cute celebrations the year finishes for the Gregorian calendar on December, 31. So, we have to prepare

We all can get balanced and have wonderful RL and SL… Relax, enjoy a lot and let’s Party always !!!!!

It felt quite amazing to travel around the world in only a few seconds by hitting the “tp” button… Visiting the Great Wall of China or just relaxing in Fred Flintstone House.... I found Second Life through Readers Digest and an article on the game and the wonders it held for the Players... She told about the inspiration behind her special and so sensual fantasies: - “The mood I am in dictates what is created... TP TO CREATIVE FANTASY at SpellBound Woods
Once upon a time... I certainly could start this tour this way, as what I found is simply like a Fairytale! Leave the adult behind and free the kid you are deep inside, to enjoy this fantastic and magical adventure. SpellBound Woods is one of the most beautiful themed Islands I have ever seen. It looks like the pages of a fairytale book. Each detail is simply perfect and if you free your imagination you will even feel the cold breeze give chills… The smell of cinnamon and spices spread in the air and the chocolate flavor invaded my mouth when I saw the Gingerbread Houses. This experience is more than real… If you like skating on ice, just get dressed properly, invite a friend or your beloved and enjoy it. The Christmas decoration is so cute, perfect and touching, that I couldn’t leave the Island until I explored each corner, creation and amazing surprises.

SPECIAL INTERVIEW Julia Hathor She is a very talented multitask artist creating unique and very special nature fantasy design for Creative Fantasy Home & Garden, where you can dream and enjoy wonderful moments too. Her good sense of humor and kindness are just an invitation for you to fall in love with her and her Sims. Inner: Are you used to Virtual Worlds and why did you get interested in a Virtual life, such as Second Life? Julia Hathor: Before I entered SL I had never played an online game or visited a virtual world. I had heard about Second Life in 2004 in an artist's forum. It sounded intriguing, and I couldn't wait to find out more, but my little rural mountain town didn't have high-speed internet. I called and bugged my internet provider until
88 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
finally, a year later my street was one of the first to have broad-band installed. Virtual worlds do really give you a 'second life'. It gives you a platform to let your imagination have control without the constraints of a lot of real world problems. Inner: Your creations for the Creative Fantasy Home & Garden are incredible, especially the way you show everything. What amazes us is that they are not typical stores. We can see all displayed in wonderful SIMs. So, how did you get inspired to create them? Julia Hathor: I didn't like malls and despise vendors. I decided to display my creations so that people would know exactly what they were getting, how large it was, and how the animations or scripts worked in them. I felt that people would also get a
better idea on how to display items that complimented each other if they could see them next to each other. Besides this, I had a dream to have a place that people could come to enjoy even if they didn't want to buy. Not everyone can aord a land; so hopefully, my Sims will be a refuge for their spirit.
Inner: Tell us about your activities, skills and interests in SL, besides creating fantastic and unique art?
Inner: How do you manage Creative Fantasy Home & Garden, which has 5 private islands? Tell more about them.
Julia Hathor: I'm afraid I am a very boring person and almost all of my time is spent creating with little time left over to enjoy other things like I would love to. I do get out occasionally exploring SL and seeing the amazing things other have created and wish that I had time to do it more often. I would also love to do fantasy role-playing or attend concerts. As to other skills besides creating... does shopping count?
Julia Hathor: Major problems are rare on the Sims and I do have some help from my manager, Pat Sheridan. Mostly, with some basic monitoring & twice-daily re-starts, the Sims don't require much attention. I also take care of customer service requests as quickly as I can, so that they don't pile up. Most people are very considerate and are conscious of my time. I truly think I have the best patrons in the world for my art!
90 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
Each sim is dear to my heart and has its own personality. Serenity Falls was the first, delivered by LL the day after Christmas in 2005. I wanted to have mountains, snow-covered like the ones I look out on in real life. It has evolved to show-case my creations that are most inspired by fantasy and its plants are mostly spring plants. Shadow Brook came next and was my tribute to autumn. It reflects mostly
the 'country' life, has the most animals, and often is host to any fantasy related builds that I cannot fit on Serenity Falls. Summersgate became my tropical sim. After all, you cannot put tropical next a lot of other styles or forest-type plants! It has the greatest amount of water as it hosts my underwater homes.
Spellbound Woods shows winter, Yule, and Christmas- all year! When I started that sim, there were a lot of people buying cheap snowy lands on the mainland and they didn't have a lot of homes or plants (with a wintertheme) to buy in SL. People started to beg me to create winter things, so I just had to do it! That sim gets a lot of people who are going through difficult times in their first lives. They skate on the ice pond or just sit and hear the wind howl. It seems to give them peace. Raven Hollow is dedicated to Goth & Halloween. Don't all of us crave a little scare, the chill of vampires, and the magical creatures of the night? I am not into gore, however, so my view of the dark side of fantasy is romantic and not the type to churn your stomach. Inner: Do you believe Second Life can be a bridge to improve a real life
92 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
artistic career? By the way, do you have any RL artistic background? Julia Hathor: Art has been a part of my life since I could hold a crayon. It is like eating or breathing. If I don't create in some way, I can feel it build up in me and feel ready to explode! Over my life I have painted, sculpted, created one-of-a-kind 3D quilts, designed jewelry, and expressed myself in many many ways. When my daughter was an infant and I couldn't paint, I wrote a novel (it was published and sold well, although I would say that writing isn't my favorite creative pursuit). I have to say that I have found creating in SL to be the most rewarding of all mediums. It is everchanging and is limited only by one's lack of knowledge or skill. You don't have to clean up paints or have your work explode in a kiln. You don't have to breathe toxic chemicals! As an
added benefit, you get direct & immediate feedback from people on how well you have created. If they like it, they buy, if not, they don't- and tell you so. My own personal experience finds that most people in SL are very appreciative of art- more so than the real world public in general. It can improve a career because you reach a larger and more appreciative audience. Inner: In your opinion what are the strong and weak points about creating in a Virtual World? Julia Hathor: Strong points: larger audience, immediate feedback, less messy, there are a lot of tools here to create what you imagine, whether you think logically like a scripter, daydream like a prim builder, or paint like a texture artist. You can leave it or pick things up as you choose or as your real life demands. You are exposed to differing perspectives
94 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
from people all over the world and it broadens your mind! Weak points: Easier for your work to be stolen, have to constantly learn new techniques or software as this virtual world changes (often before you get the time to master the technology to your fullest), possibility of your creations getting broken when LL updates, exploits in the code, or bugs & griefers to deal with, constantly having to keep up your high-powered computer. Inner: Do you find the resources you need in-world to express your talents and art? Julia Hathor: Yes, but it is always a combination of in-world and realworld. I could not live without Photoshop, of course, and how can you not be inspired by the things in real life? However, there are some fantastic in-world tools like 'Sculpt
96 | InnerWorld Magazine - Issue 11 - December 2009
Studio', and although the Second Life edit tools can be frustrating sometimes, but they do get most of the work done. And if you are lucky enough to look around this fantastic wonderful world that is SL, how could you ever not be inspired? I feel incredibly privileged to be surrounded by art everywhere I turn here. After all, how can one not create in this exploding cauldron of imagination? Thank you very much for your attention, Julia.

For example, a color could convey happiness in Italy, but mourning in another country. It is essential to consider color meanings throughout the world and your culture and what kind of mood you are before you choose what to wear.
