Ideas and sensations are always surrounding us and nothing is better than music to make moments unforgettable. Rhythms, culture, daring‌ and the brilliant touch of the artist create what captivates the fans. In this issue I talk about music as inspiration, life style, the many ways we can enjoy it and how virtual worlds, specially Second Life, have brought a cultural revolution and are a bridge used by the music industry and talents created in SL or who believe in show their RL work in the metaverse. It includes DJs, singers, musicians, producers and many talents who create even cover successful bands such as U2inSL. The article is a special guide made for you! Ideas come all the time to make InnerWorld

even better. I am honored to present and welcome this fantastic RL artist, Geppex McCaw, who pleases us by his art and intelligent humor. Read DarkDharma Daguerre in a special interview and know about her passionate way to make everything, especially for U2. In “Stamp Award Paul Ge talks about music and how he creates the most incredible music instruments of SL. And since it is the love season, we show a fashion wedding editorial for who has attitude and likes to be special. Be and wear what makes you happy in your great day! Partnerships are always welcome and we are happy to welcome Crys Blachere of Bossa Nova Club, Kaio Obviate and Cezar Boram of Second Island and Lucyanni Writer of Live2Life. I wish this issue would inspire you to sing, dance, love and LIVE! Sweet Kisses,

Music makes the people come together as the lyric of Music by Madonna says. I agree completely and this is the subject of our fourth issue. Our main article talks about music and shows many talents, the members of the U2inSL and DarkDharma Daguerre (DD for her fellows) as the interview. That’s why I couldn’t dare thinking about any other cover for this so special edition. The Cover challenge is about the difficult or work to created the final cover and let the readers know about it. The big problem of this issue is that I didn’t find any problem or difficult. LOL DarkDharma

work for U2inSL. I had a gemstone in my hands and I would only need to work it. I made the first Sketch of the cover, showed to Ananda and after it was decided, nothing else was left to do. It was one of the most incredible covers I´ve created, as I can´t hide I am their big fan. I love the guys of U2inSL, DarkDharma and the team. There are much more behind this project, more than people playing U2 in Second Life. Besides the show, they also spread the brands of real and important campaigns such as RED and ONE. They certainly deserve the cover. It couldn´t be different! I hope you like it!!! Kisses =**

Find your tune and feel it!

It is Music to my ears… When we think about the development of music, natural sounds and the

way animals used to communicate could be a good start. Findings from a range of Paleolithic sites show bones that could be instruments to play music. India is the example, with its Classical Music, of the oldest musical traditions in the world and has the earliest written records of musical

expression. So, think about melody, harmony rhythm, tunes and tempo, and it all together create a magic expression to amaze our way to face feelings.

According to the musicologist Jean-Jacques Nattiez, "the border

between music and noise is always culturally defined — which implies that,

even within a single society, this border does not always pass through the same place; in short, there is rarely a consensus… By all accounts there is no single and intercultural universal concept defining what music might be, except that it is 'sound through time'."

Think about a sound, any sound, it can be pleasant or annoying. It

depends on the situation and what pleases you. It is a matter of taste also. Birdsong can be “music to your ears”, but maybe not while you are very tired, just trying to sleep and this bird insists in singing and singing. So, the right time for music is the moment we can enjoy it. In my humble

It is a big revolution, an amazing opportunity to perform your talents, if you are famous or not in RL. Residents of this Virtual World called Second

Life create avatars (their virtual representation), which can look like them or be completely different than RL representing the artist, DJ or each member of a band, who can mimic their real life performance.

It is a new way to experience music!! What amazes everybody is the idea of playing live in real life, while people

from many countries can hear, express their emotions and dance together in-world. Listening to live music and interacting with people from so many different countries, cultures and beliefs is a fantastic way to open our minds to endless possibilities. “Virtual music and Art are a way we can enjoy real creativity through the Virtual World New Era. It is an immersive experience of interactive sounds, images and animations, which provoke such real feelings that we truly get the sensation of watching and listening to a real show!

And how about some bands and musicians, which started their success

in SL? We already can find many in the metaverse.

Another way to experience music in SL is the homage some fans make as

a tribute to their idols. They create cover bands and perform incredible real concerts!

23

The biggest example we find in-

world is the U2inSL. It is a role-player cover band, which not only performs their music, by controlling very realistic avatars, during big realistic concerts, but also supports amazing campaigns such as One Campaign (maybe the

We can’t talk about music in SL and not mention, a captivating and dreamy Band called Chouchou. It is a Japanese music group, which exists only in Second Life. They were searching for new possibilities of music and all we can say is WOW. They amaze the audience and the vocals of Juliet Heberle make us drift off into a quiet relaxing place. They need support to follow their Project in-world and donations are very welcome. You can also enjoy the fantastic voices and music of Dale Katscher, Damian Carbenell, Dexter Ihnen, Digby Smalls, Jonas Lunasea, Mankind Tracer and Maximillion Kleene.

You can go to amazing in-world Clubs to enjoy the best music and dance.

Lets shake our virtual bodies too, and why not the real ones at the same

time? The 6th Element is an amazing GOL's Club where people from all around get together to dance and enjoy great music. Cirque Mystique, Dance & Trance Club is another fantastic place not only to dance and hear great music. But, it also amazes all because you simply go to a Ship as a start. Prepare yourself for many surprises, technology, perfect creations and the decoration.

You certainly can also have lots of fun and enjoy great moments and

different styles of music and places, such as Sunset Jazz Club, the oldest jazz club in SL; Bossa Nova Club where the great masters of music are still alive and you can enjoy their best songs such as The Girl from Ipanema;

Artistic talent, creativity and sensibility to observe. These are some essential qualities to be an artist. And when we find such a precious person, who can make the mag richer, we must invite him. I am pleased and honored to present our new column and the art and humor of this amazing RL Brazilian artist. Gepp is graduated in Manufacturing Draw and Sociology and Politics in traditional important Universities of Sao Paulo. He has published charges, illustrations and cartoons about sports, politics, caricature maps of cities and fantastic art created in partnership with the illustrator Maia. They made great charges and cartoons for important magazines and newspapers, such as Veja, Playboy, Status and Placar; advertising agencies as Almap, DPZ, Rino and Saldiva; and even for Banks as Unibanco, Santander and Real as institutional articles. They created folk caricature to show architecture and culture, for an exhibition at the Memorial of Latin America and also created caricatures of

This music producer and talented musician from Belgium lives and breathes music in his RL and SL. His amazing ideas, events and creations can be found in-world, and be sure you’ll have an unforgettable experience if you play any of his instruments. The huds, sounds and animations make them so real, that you’ll feel like a pop star! Paul Ge has played computer games for his whole life. He is a musician and made animations for avatars before he knew SL. His interest in a Virtual life, such as Second Life came with the first idea he had, which was to promote live concerts in SL. He was the first person ever to produce a LIVE virtual concert with a band in SL. After that, he organized a project for The Hedrons, Live in Second Life, which was for a huge promo and was simultaneously at BT Digital Music Awards 2007. After the Hedrons project he was invited to be a panelist at the Music Ally debate about "Virtual Worlds - Real Potential". Then, he decided to work on instruments instead of doing projects, for a while. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DjXc7K3KVo Music is very important in his Real and Virtual lives, as he is a drummer in a few bands, also making his own music for his own band named “Frame”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmxDE_PV6n0 Paul believes Second Life can be a bridge to improve a real life artistic career, but he mentions the limit of people at a Sim is a problem. Regarding what can happen to SL, He says – “it will be like that famous saying 'Video Killed the radio star', then 'Virtual Concerts killed the...uum' :) in future” :) He also thinks SL can be a nice promo for big bands and can walk through their videoclip, etc.

42

| InnerWorld Magazine :: Maio 2009

He is looking forward to what some bands will do with virtual worlds in future In his opinion the positive point he finds in SL is meeting people all over the world and having no traveling costs. But, the negative point is that we never know who is behind an avatar. Paul says – “when I started I could get uum 'what's the word', sexual feelings from females, but now when I have been in SL for so long, I just see pixels :). In future we will have a live motion suit, so we can walk around in SL and even touch each other. Someday we can walk around in virtual and RL world at the same time, I think :). Now we are using an “old flat screen”, but our children will laugh

43

about it in future lol, a screen instead of 3d glasses? I'm a dreamer :) but, this will be true, I think.” Regarding his process of creation, the sounds and sources he uses to offer so amazing instruments, Paul tells he is a music producer in RL and have a giant library of sounds, so that wasn’t hard. When he started to create instruments he didn’t want to include sounds, as the plan was to make it for live streaming musicians only, but people kept asking for sounds. So, now they can be played with or without sound. Paul is very happy about the resources he finds in-world to create, though SL still has some bugs sometimes. It is especially frustrating when he wants to make a 253 prim object be all bright, when some prims aren’t. But, even then he loves to create in SL and most of all when everyone can make tools. There are some great tools such as "Prim Master" and “EasyTexture”. – “of course everyone is waiting for being able to import objects made in programs outside of SL. And when that happens, the whole SL world will change quickly, of course.”

44

| InnerWorld Magazine :: Maio 2009

He also is very interested in all the 'mixed reality' future. We can watch a lot of nice videos on mixed reality at YouTube or augmented reality. The bands he likes are Radiohead, U2, Zita Swoon, and many, many more, and, of course, his new band the snout eating livers :) The style Paul plays is pop and eighties-like and downtempo, a bit like Lamb and The Knife and Massive Attack, etc. In the “Second Life of his dreams” we would be able to walk around with a motion capture suit and 3d glasses. One example is the porn industry, which is very big and so always can see what is coming by having a look there. Maybe they'll be the first coming with suits with touch sensors.

And to finish this nice interview, Paul has very good news: The tribute bands can get his instruments for free at his store. By the way, it is a huge and amazing store where you find since the classic to the typical folk instruments from many countries. A music adventure for you! ★

- “the music industry seems to be always a few years behind things, which is great 'cause it gives me some more time, before the companies come beating us all.”- he says.

45

Name: Khiron Ametza Since when in SL: 10/21/08 Skills: Singer and presumptuous photographer Why did you decide to sing in SL? Well, “once upon a time” when I was still a newbie, I was invited by a new friend to a live concert and when I saw and heard the singer (OneSummer Oh) and her guitar, I thought, why not me? After all I have been singing in RL for more than 20 years, so I decided to fulfill this wish. What is your style? I love to sing romantic songs, disco of 70´s and 80´s and Classic Rock. But, I sing Jazz in RL and enjoy more when I sing in English. Favorite Island: Well, I like the WiseGuys Island very much, because of their friendly welcome and the high level stores they offer. What else do you like to do in SL: Singing!!!! And when I get some free time, I like shopping and meeting new people. Two songs you sing and people love: I believe they enjoy a lot “We are the champions” and “I feel like a woman”, but I know they also like “Can’t take my eyes off of you” and “Dancing Queen”. Inner: Why did you decide to live a virtual life and create realistic avatars? DarkDharma Daguerre: I've always been highly intrigued by the thought of living, exploring, and creating in a virtual world. A world where you could be or do almost anything you could imagine. So, naturally, SL was the perfect place! Creating avatars was just an extension of my artistic creativity and also a challenge to see how good I could get with the realism. Inner: Where do you inspiration to create?

find

DarkDharma Daguerre: My inspiration comes from nothing and everything, depending on what moves me. I'm sure this sounds strange, but I've frequently said that the avatar was “asking me” to make them. Like it flowed out of nothing into being. I also like the challenge of seeing how

60

| InnerWorld Magazine :: Maio 2009

close to the real person I can create an avatar. The U2inSL avatars are my most favorite avatars in that regard. I consider them my pièce de résistance! Inner: Why did you decide to create a successful cover band in SL and why U2? DarkDharma Daguerre: Demian Caldera and I actually had previously created U2 in “There” (another 3D virtual world), so moving into SL was a natural extension, which offered us much broader possibilities of what we could do. U2inSL was the first cover band in SL and lead the way for all the others, which exist in SL today. Why U2? WE LOVE THE BAND AND ALL THAT THEY STAND FOR!!!! Inner: You have a team that works in harmony and it is important to mention Demian Caldera and Nyna Slate. How did

61

this partnership start? DarkDharma Daguerre: Demian Caldera is my co-managing partner. He actually was the brainchild of the whole project as he and I started doing this type of thing in the There world. Shortly after arriving in Second Life in late 2004, Demian became friends with Nyna Slate. Things started evolving pretty quickly from that point. Nyna Slate is our Security Crew Chief and our Assistant Manager. U2inSL performed their first concert in June 2005 at their home sim of Dragon Moon, the same sim they perform at today. Inner: Has the real U2 band contacted the U2 in SL? If not, how would you react if Bono in person contacted you? DarkDharma Daguerre: I certainly would be very excited to say the least if that were to happen but, no, the real band has never contacted U2inSL. We have several times attempted in numerous ways to contact and inform the real band of what we do. I would be deeply honored if Bono contacted us in person, and I

D a rk D h a r ma D a g u e r re 64

would hope that he and his band mates would love what we're doing in their name — In the Name of Love! Inner: What kind of magic moves you all to go on? Would it be the fans and their excited reaction, like it was a real show? DarkDharma Daguerre: The challenge of seeing how close we can make it to be like “real” motivates us. Plus, very importantly, the causes we represent, the U2 band and what they stand for, all that they do, who they are, what they put forth to the world. Yes, also the excitement and reaction we get from all the in-world fans is what motivates us to keep going! The guys who play the band say it's quite amazing to see the reaction of the fans as they play virtual rock stars! Inner: How do you face the responsibilities about showing their real and social projects, even doing it in a Virtual world?

D e mi a n C a l d e r a 65

66

| InnerWorld Magazine :: Maio 2009

67

DarkDharma Daguerre: We take that responsibility VERY seriously. We only support the causes the real band supports; we take NO MONEY for our efforts. In addition, as the avatars look like and have the names of the real band members, the guys who run the U2 avatars would never behave or act in such a way as to bring disgrace upon them. It is a code of conduct in U2inSL never to do or say anything that would reflect badly on the real person they are portraying, and they hold steadfastly faithful to that behavior. Inner: You have been presenting the Tour Vertigo for about four years and it gives us the real sensation of being there. The Sky Stadium made it much more real. Are you ready for the Tour 360째? To do it you

68

| InnerWorld Magazine :: Maio 2009

will need to start all from zero. Is it one more good motivation? DarkDharma Daguerre: It certainly IS a motivation and we're more than just thinking about it, we are READY! We're already in production with the new stage, new set, new EVERYthing. We plan on presenting our first U2inSL 360° Tour show sometime early this summer. Inner: What are the next challenges? Not even the sky is the limit? DarkDharma Daguerre: It has been a continuing challenge and a constant, changing evolution since late 2004 when we first got going with the creation of the sets, avatars, etc. Never striving to be static, we have constantly improved with every show. Everything has evolved from much more humble beginnings. For instance, the avatars you see today are not the band avatars we started

out with, but have each gone through at least a dozen changes. We continue to evolve and expand, and perfect things to the utmost of our abilities. Not even the sky is the limit, WE ARE LIMITLESS! Inner: Thank you so much for your attention. ★
