After 6 issues we have conquered more readers every day and it is a great joy to offer the highest quality for more entertainment, art, culture, fun and fantasy. By the way, as I mentioned fantasy... There is nothing more pleasurable than talking about one of the most wonderful facets of Second Life.

RPG is the special subject of this issue, and I show it in a simple way as a fascinating world of roleplay. SL is a fantasy itself and can be enhanced

mythical worlds, magical creatures, routes of epic battles and the ability to dream and act our roles as dragons, dinosaurs, fairies, elves, wizards, elegant warriors, vampires or even sensual characters in a parallel world called Gor.

Cover C h al l eng e

I am always looking for tools to make my work easier. So, I had an idea and created a frame with the same shape of the mags´s cover and also put the InnerWorld logo there. Then, it gives me the exactly idea of how the photo will look like when I take that. Tiamat is the cover of our issue, and the main theme is Fantasy and RPG in Second Life. Tiamat is so sweet and immediately accepted the photo shooting at Grendel´s Children. I also went there before this to take the photos for our “Teleport to”… I fell in Love with Dragons! Her avatar is fantastic and was customized by her. It is amazing. My only challenge for this issue was the decision about which photo would be on the cover. I took 40 photos of “Tia” – as I am used to call her. Then, she took me for a ride on her back and I could enjoy a different view of Grendel´s and it was funny. A special kiss to Tiamat! I hope you will have fun and enjoy this journey with us in this special and magic Issue! Kisses,

I

always was curious about this RPG universe, but never had much time to learn

about or to enjoy it. As it is a style of game that so many people have played and we also can find lots of beautiful Sims in SL to play that, it is time to go deeper into this subject and try to learn and understand it now. I am doing my best to tell you what you can get and what you can enjoy. Many friends told me a lot about this and it sounds fascinating‌ I really am very attempted to live this someday. (Maybe when I will not be writing‌) Gosh!! When? LOL

F

irst of all, it is important to understand the definition of RPG. The meaning is role-

playing game; often roleplaying game, in which players assume the roles of characters and act out adventures, like a theater. There are systems of rules and guidelines on the actions. They can succeed or fail and the players have the freedom to improvise to play the game and achieve victory by completing a series of quests.

R

ole playing games are fundamentally different from most other types of games in

that they stress social interaction and collaboration, whereas board games, card games, and sports emphasize competition. The characters grow in power and abilities, and characters are typically designed by the player who explores a game world by engaging in tactical combats during highly developed stories. The players then create characters whose roles they will play in the game.

P

eople who play RPG consider them to be a form of interactive and collaborative

storytelling. Like novels or films, imagination is the basis for role-playing games. Also interactivity is the crucial difference between role-playing games and traditional fiction.

B

ut, there is much more we can try and this is the point where we can really start

the fantasy and discover the deepest dreams and desires we’ve hidden even from ourselves. Maybe you’ve dreamed of being a Prince, a Princess, Knight, warrior, hunter, vampire, magician, cartoon, doll, fairy, dragon, elf, slave, master, robot, ET… Gosh! There are so many options.

S

econd Life is a 3D environment simulator, where we can decide to repeat the

formulas of RL, with its habits, behavior or even dramas. But, we can also go beyond reality and choose the most fantastic way to experience this Virtual life as creatures of RPG. There are amazing Sims where you can meet all kind of people and options of roleplay games. Even if you are not familiar to the rules and etiquette, you can also enjoy the talent of who create the environments, which are simply gorgeous as you can see the photos. It is fantastic to see how those builders create perfect villages, castles, environment, forests and even the outfits and avatars.

ut, if you want to go deeper and challenge your

most secret sensual fantasies, you can also go to Gor, a parallel planet full of magic and sensuality, where your desires can be expressed freely as a Master, a Kajira/u (slave) or a free woman/man. It is another kind of RP, where they have their own etiquette, but sensual behavior is allowed. There are not limits to enjoy your secrets. Gorean people live their lives in a very intense way. It is very important to separate and respect the different categories of games, as Gorean RP is not allowed in other Sims where nudity and sex are not allowed. Etiquette is a must in RPG.

here are lots of RPG Sims where you can play and

St amp Aw a rd: Kayle ig h M cM i ll a n

She is very creative, skilled, sweet and her best quality amazes all, as she has a great heart too. I am pleased to present this very interesting woman, who has been creating royal jewelry and amazing products for ByKay Creations and much more! Kayleigh McMillan joined Second Life basically out of curiosity, because there was much media attention to virtual worlds and especially Second Life in the Netherlands, where she lives. That time Second Life was pointed out as something bad, for nerds or social incapable people in the media. –“I found this very judgmental and wanted to find out myself. I never expected my interest in Second Life would last very long. But, once I found out you could be creative in SL, I was so amazed. And here started my love for prims and creative expression. I find it very interesting to share knowledge and meet people and cultures from all over the world. This amazes me about Second Life: how easily we can meet other cultures and learn from each other.” – she said. She is not sure if something inspired her to

51

create her avatar at that time. But, she sees Kayleigh as playing with Barbies. Buying clothes, different skins and shoes… it is just an animated doll to her. – “Girls just love Barbies, right?” – Kayleigh tells. As an important member of a group, which promotes events and many actions to help Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, Kayleigh shares how it started. – “A friend (Winnie Sweetwater) asked me last year if I wanted to participate in her RFL team “The Riverbend Runners”. I was willing very much to do this. She gave me a RFL kiosk to collect money with and she told me there would be a great 24 hours run in July. I enjoyed every bit of it and felt so touched by the fact that people all over the world stuck together in this huge and beautiful event. We shared so much creativity, power, and devotion.” As one more reason to make her engage in charity campaigns, Kayleigh says. -“I lost my stepfather to cancer and apart from

52 | InnerWorld Magazine :: July 2009

the sadness, I remember very well how I felt so powerless. He was suffering and there was nothing I could do for him apart from making him feel as comfortable as possible.” By participating in Relay for Life she found a way to do something and this gave her a great and fulfilling feeling. What RFL in Second Life does is hard to describe in words, but “it is something so beautiful and it is really an honor to participate”. She is pretty much self-made, although she probably has influences from being raised by artist parents. Her father is a photographer, graphic designer and painter and her mother has done the academy of arts in Amsterdam and is a painter as well. She thinks she has some genes, although before Second Life she never discovered this. The main thing Kayleigh does in Second Life is creating, because being creative gives her a great sense of joy. Her inspiration comes probably from her love to make things beautiful and work on details. It gives her a great satisfaction when an idea comes together in a design and it is really an addictive feeling. Regarding new experiences she tells us about the joy of working with Photoshop, which allows her to create her own textures. Photoshop is a complex program and she hasn’t figured out all the possibilities by far. Home decoration was her start in SL by creating furniture and

53

54 | InnerWorld Magazine :: July 2009

decorating houses on request; Terraforming is also a great hobby of her. She helped her best friend in SL Shery Capalini of Capalini Estates by creating tropical islands, which she sells as estates. Then, she became her landscaper in case her customers have special requests. - “I'm proud to be a designer of Nokia merchandising” - Kayleigh was asked by Digistar Brouwer, who is managing Nokia Mobile phones in Second Life, to create some lifestyle products for them. She made a Nokia kitchen and cutlery sets and also freebies as a Nokia Toolbox filled with all sorts of stuff for a newcomer needs. She was also asked to create historical cell phones from Nokia. Wow... and these are a lot of phones. She started with the first two Nokia Cell phones and they are… Huge! – “It is Unbelievable how things improve in time” :-D Kayleigh also loves fashion and shopping in SL, and sometimes she finds outfits, which inspire her to create a new jewelry line. She

55

56 | InnerWorld Magazine :: July 2009

finds a lot of inspiration by visiting stores of other designers. Music is also a passion for her and together with her favorite DJ BooBoo Streeter, she recently created a Martini Lounge in the sky of her region, where she will have a gig every month. Probably the most positive thing Kayleigh finds in SL is the fact that people can use their imagination, create and have an opportunity to discover “hidden” talents. While before this many people were spending their evenings being entertained by their television, platforms such as Second Life make it possible to be actively entertained as well. She tells – “There is a lot of criticism about virtual worlds. I think many years ago this was also the fact with watching television. They thought this would be harmful as well. Maybe in time people will be more tolerant and responsive to these new possibilities.” The most negative thing in Second life for her is the drama and difficult Second Life relationships. She is fortunate to be married in RL with an amazing and supportive husband who is her partner in Second Life as well. But, drama and mindgames are probably the most repulsive thing she sees. She feels this can be worse than RL, as there is less accountability for actions in SL, because people have the protection of their anonymity. She is lucky enough that she hasn’t had many negative experiences, but has seen a lot of sadness from these things with close people. Kayleigh has found all the tools to create in Second Life, but sometimes they just don’t do what she wants or suddenly act different after a new viewer release. She hopes in the future Linden will more and more find a way to create a stabile platform for us. But, she thinks the possibilities in Second Life as a creative platform are endless. Thank you for your kind attention, Kayleigh. ★

Old formulas such as creating Islands to promote parties can work just to a point. I haven’t seen any different corporate strategies yet. The successful experiences are happening to designers who develop different products and islands for the residents, knowing how to live in community and how to build good relationships. There are many possibilities and I think Virtual universes are living a similar stage when "the computer was only a tool to type texts, create tables and calculations."

When I signed up for the implementation of mentors, I wanted to learn more, to help more. There are so many nice and kind people in the islands where I live. They respect all languages and cultures and host everybody so well, that it inspired me to do the same not only for foreign, but also for Brazilian people. Being a mentor is volunteering and having a chance to offer a little of what fascinates me so much. It is giving information or tips about islands to visit, or explaining the step-by-step basics for a beginner or even solving problems between neighbors. I joined the group of translators some time ago; and since then I dedicate some of my SL and RL time to inform about the Grid, tutorials and to translate the site to Brazilian Portuguese language. It is a team

divided into several groups of languages, which receives via email and forum (The Jira) all material for translation and correction. We all contribute in some way, it is quite interesting.

Inner: How do you see the presence of kids and teenagers in Second Life? What do you suggest to control this as USA has already the Teen Grid? Ti a ma t Bi ngy i: I know how attractive and full of possibilities a virtual world can be, including this videogame looking and the adult universe. Nevertheless, besides the danger of pedophile, frauds and theft, since Linden U.S. dollars can be converted into real currency; it is not easy to verify age of users. No teenager will say they can’t deal with mature adults - in time: I know very mature teenagers who are very responsible. But, I worry about how far a slicker adult can go to get what he wants.

which may or may not look like you. You can choose to be of another gender or even a creature. This is pure interpretation (rp). Many people want just a beautiful avatar. Many residents spend their time interacting with others, trying poses, buying things, driving cars, and finally living a second life. I chose to be a Dragon, first because of my passion for mythology, and also because I know how to be a "human being". As SL is a simulator, then why not try and go beyond the limits of fantasy? In second life I am a dragon all the time, even when I wear a unicorn avatar. LOL Regarding the Brazilian RPG islands in Second Life, I saw lots of expectations from the players, who thought they would find something like WoW and MMORPGs, or something closer to the old rpg-table, full of rules. The RP in SL is different than both options. On one hand the expectations of players and GMs (game masters who were like masters of

79

each group within an island of rp), and also they should maintain the chronic working and make it profitable - I tried to help lead an island serving as a master by coordinating other GMs, but I think I failed because I am having such expectations. Another reason was that I couldn’t be more involved as it could affect my activities as mentor and volunteer on the island of dragons. I think it is not better nor worse than other RPG, it is just different.

Inner: Tiamat is a splendid dragon! Tell us about your passion for this fantasy of being a dragon and how do you enjoy SL as a mythic being? What do you like to do? T i am a t Bin gyi : As I say, I have a bit of Tiamat´s soul. The dragon inspires me and its tireless desire for knowledge and honor. Of course that hunting griefers and being addicted to collect different avatars to treasure is also part of my business here. Tiamat was a Babylonian goddess that took the form of a dragon to confront their children gods, who murdered his first consort Apsu and was eventually killed by Marduk, the sun. From his blood came the rivers Tigris and Euphrates; and from his body the earth and the heavens were made. I put in my profile a reference to this myth and I live my SL as a dragon, discovering the wonders of the modern world. As a dragon I can change my shape, so I edit my avatars to show some peculiar look that identify who I am. Non-human avatars usually attract attention as much as malicious comments. I don’t give much attention as the comments and emotions of people, who usually take a ride on my back, are usually unforgettable; it is almost magical. I love participating in tournaments and races, avatar editing, building small items and some nonsense stuff to make people laugh (it is not easy to find clothes and accessories for dragons.) I also love to be in festivals and events in communities of fantasy (elves, mermaids, dragons, creatures tiny,

80 | InnerWorld Magazine :: July 2009

etc‌) and help the residents... Ok, I could say I have fun pretending I am a dragon statue at the Help Islands, but I think that would not be a good comment for a mentor. LOLÂ

Inner: Have you developed any new skill because of SL? T i am a t Bi ngyi : Hum... some new skill? I think I am always trying to break the record for such nonsense (written words) per hour. heheheheheh I am kidding‌ my English improved and so the Spanish. Sometimes I try some conversation in German to recover the language I learned some years ago. It is so good to practice as it promotes more contact with people from many parts of the world; this is priceless. :)

Inner: What would you like to find in the metaverse, which could make your Second Life more enjoyable?

81

82 | InnerWorld Magazine :: July 2009

sculpts, a better way to make SL more intuitive for newbies and something that could stop or at least control the action of copybots. It is so sad to see many designers loosing interest in creating in SL, after they had their copyrights violated by a slicker.
