Information Technology

By Edward Heerenveen

In today’s world it is impossible to run an airline successfully and efficiently without a proper, well organized IT-infrastructure. The IT department of InselAir is - on a minute-to-minute basis - busy keeping all the systems going; making sure everyone and everything is connected all the time in order for us to keep providing our customers with our good services.

Everything, always running

“It is important for

Not only desktops computers, but also laptops, tablets, our website and mobile phones depend on a reliable, secure and fast data network. One of the main goals of the IT department therefore is making sure that this data network is up and running 24/7. With almost 400 people working at InselAir, spread out over 16 destinations and working 24/7, 365 days a year, you can imagine that the IT network plays a crucial role within InselAir. Not only for our employees in our head office in Curaçao, but also all our points of sale and our representatives in other countries rely on this network on which all bookings, reservations and payment systems are running. A malfunction of any of these elements could have huge consequences. That’s why it is important for InselAir to keep investing in IT, to make sure we have the right tools, hardware and software to keep our promises to our customers.

investing in IT, to make sure we have the right tools, hardware and software to keep our promises to our customers.” Business continuity Besides all this, IT has an enormous responsibility to guarantee business continuity by making sure that everything is being securely backed up and to make sure that - in case something does happen unexpectedly - we are able to restart ‘our engines’ and continue business as usual. Do

not only think of documents, presentations and emails or any other files, but more importantly, maintenance documents for aircrafts and other legal documents - which are essential for an airline - are being carefully backed up by our IT department. Furthermore this department is responsible for quite some new initiatives which on its turn has improved in many occasions the service InselAir delivers to its clients. In the near future IT will play an even more important role within InselAir as we keep innovating and improving our services to you.

One happy island

Aruba

for families

Sand castle building, shell hunting tours, art classes and merengue dancing are just some of the many activities offered at Aruba’s resorts and hotels - most of which boast special kids’ programs, deals and all-day camps. But resort fun is just the beginning, as families seeking something more than a traditional Caribbean experience will discover countless kid-friendly attractions and activities throughout the One happy island. Windsurfing capital Miles of pristine, white-sand beaches along the southwestern coast beckon families to try Aruba’s many signature land and sea activities. Thanks to highly favorable wind and water conditions and year-round 82-degree weather, Aruba is the windsurfing capital of the world. At the same time offshore and under the turquoise seas, snorkelers and divers marvel at some of the largest shipwrecks in the Caribbean as well as living reefs, coral and colorful marine life. Athletic families who prefer to keep their toes in the sand can take a shot at the island’s national pastime, beach tennis. The sport is popular with everyone from worldwide pros to amateurs, who can reserve a court and paddle at MooMba Beach, or take it a step further by signing up for lessons with a local expert.

Arikok National Park Discovery and excitement only continue as families venture beyond the world-famous InselAir Reaching Higher

beaches into the rugged and wild Arikok National Park. Children and adults rejoice as they venture 20 miles of desert-like terrain via Jeep Safari, ATV adventure, horseback or foot – sightseeing exotic cacti, caves, hidden beaches and coves, natural pools, bridges and indigenous flora and fauna, including the Aruba rattlesnakes, burrowing owls and blue whiptail lizards. The park’s visitor center provides an enriching overview of the land’s culture, history and conservation efforts, and local experts are eager to share Arikok’s secrets and stories. Admission is free for children, as the park is invested in future generations, who will be the ones to carry on conservation efforts.

Very Important Kid Among the most ideal timeframes to visit Aruba is this summer – thanks to a new island-wide program featuring attractive deals valid through Sept. 30, 2013. Aruba Tourism Authority and more than 10 on-island

properties have partnered on a “One Happy Family” campaign, which includes an interactive VIK (Very Important Kid) component and culminates in a week-long trip giveaway to the One happy island. Visitors who book a stay at a participating hotel or resort and mention “One Happy Family” receive free nightly accommodations and daily breakfast for children under 12 years old, a souvenir gift for the family, VIK benefits, and discounts and special offers on island attractions and activities. Upon check-in at participating hotels, children enjoy a VIK cocktail and are awarded with a VIK passport featuring several of Aruba’s kid-friendly hot spots, including the world-famous Baby Beach, Archaeological Museum, History Museum, California Lighthouse, Aruba Aloe Factory and Arikok National Park. As families visit and explore each of these locations, the VIK-holders are challenged with answering questions and completing puzzles. Once finished, kids submit their passports to the hotel to be entered into a drawing for the chance to win a oneweek trip for four (airfare included) back to Aruba. Winners will be announced at the end of September. For more information on the “One Happy Family” program, family-friendly attractions and activites and summer-inspired hotel and tour operator deals, visit www.aruba.com. In the Spotlight En el Punto de Mira

A visit to San Nicolas equals an unconventional, yet unforgettable experience. If you are hoping for a little more excitement than sipping cocktails at a beach resort, then this may just be the place for you. Named after Nicolas van der Biest, the area’s main landowner, San Nicolas is the second largest city in Aruba following the island’s capital Oranjestad.

San Nicolas: A place where you will be a few friends richer Oil Refinery at Baby Beach

San Nicolas thanks its existence to the nearby oil refinery that came to the island at the beginning of the 20th century. Many refinery workers, who came from the British Caribbean islands between 1924 -1985 made this town their residence. Most of them and their descendants still remain here to this day.

by the huge collection of junk collected all over this establishment. Every single person who visits this bar leaves something behind. You will see license plates, old cameras, photos, stickers and all kinds of objects turning Charlie’s into a real museum.

During its heyday, this town was swamped with bars, banks, brothels and many other businesses that tended to the flow of the refinery workers. Today, the excitement at San Nicolas is mellower, except for Carubbian Night, a weekly street party taking place every Thursday where everyone is welcome to attend. There are other illicit practices that keep this town dynamic, as it appears that San Nicolas happens to have a Red Light District.

The very fascinating contrast to the oil refinery makes you eerily enough want to be a part of this scenery instead of running far away.

Charlie’s Bar & Restaurant

Baby Beach

This place is legendary. It has been around since 1941 and has traditionally been the place where refinery workers and seamen from all over the world frequent in the after work hours. Even though the refinery is barely in business these days, Charlie’s remains the center of attraction in San Nicolas. When you set foot in this establishment you are sure to be overwhelmed

If you plan on taking a trip out to San Nicolas then why not trail further down for a beach experience. Baby Beach is a true Caribbean gem. That is, if you don’t mind the Oil Refinery as your backdrop. It is located in Seroe Colorado a short distance from San Nicolas at the southeastern tip of Aruba. Its calm shallow waters make it perfect for swimming, snorkeling and even

walking. You can wander far out in the water and still stand. The bay opens up to the Caribbean Sea where you are met with coral reefs and tropical fish. With food, drinks, showers and rental equipment for a snorkeling or diving adventure at your disposal, Baby Beach is the perfect way to start your day before ending it at San Nicolas.

InselAir Reaching Higher

No: 18 | Jul - Sep 2013

In North Aruba, deep inside the Arikok National Park lies a natural pool known as Conchi or ‘Cura di Tortuga’. Rarely visited by anyone, this hidden gem is located on a very remote rough terrain.

Conchi The physical conditions alone demand a 4-wheel drive to get there, but hardcore naturalists or athletes should go there by foot or horseback. On your way to Conchi, you cannot help but feel that you are trekking down an undiscovered path. The journey itself, although arduous, is filled with some fantastic views of the island. Some of the raw captivating nature can be viewed from high up, as you will go through some of the highest peaks, the Arikok Hilltop and Jamanota Hilltop, of Aruba. Luckily, the rewards are sweet as you step into this phenomenal serene swimming area that has a fantastic view of the ocean. In contrast, you will hear the rough waves crashing into the rock formations surrounding this area. The water hurdles over the rocks filling inside the pool. This is nothing short of a water park experience, where daredevils dive off the cliffs into the pool. The underwater life makes Conchi fit for snorkeling, so bring your waterproof shoes to protect your feet from the reef. The area outside the pool remains quite rough, making it unfit for swimming.

The natural pool ‘Conchi’

InselAir Reaching Higher

Quadirikiri Cave The Arikok National Park has other wonderful sights that are also worth a visit. More accessible than the ‘Cura di Tortuga’ is the Boca Prins, a lovely beach right off some striking sand dunes where you can relax at the café whilst enjoying the view and watch sea turtles claim their nestingground. Another location is the Dos Playa, a white beach surrounded by a rocky coastline. The winds are strong here so only the experienced surfers are recommended to chase these waves. Another must see is the Quadirikiri Cave, a relatively easy to explore 30 meter-long cave home to many bats. There are openings in the ceilings here and there where light shines through. It is believed that this cave was once a hiding place for pirates.

Near Quadirikiri Cave, Aruba, Arikok National Park

The Mysterious Lac Bay Bonaire A great island adventure

Bonaire may be one of the least populated islands in the Caribbean, but its incredible biodiversity is thankful for it. Seeming that about 60% of the island is either a national park or protected area, we felt that we had to shed some light on the wonderful mangrove forest at Lac Bay. It is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park and a nice place to spend your Sunday afternoon drinking soup while watching sea turtles swim by. The perfect water condition, no higher than waste deep, also makes this a great location for swimming and windsurfing. InselAir Reaching Higher

In the Spotlight En el Punto de Mira Lac Bay happens to have the most well preserved Mangrove Forest in the Caribbean. Its four different types of mangrove trees and its resemblance to a Louisiana swamp, makes visiting this mysterious place a fun off-the-beaten path experience. Mangrove forests are highly essential to our ecosystems as it is our natural coastal protection area. Also, the extended roots of mangrove trees turn into a nursery, producing organic material to feed the reefs next door. Luckily, the professional and enthusiastic employees at the Mangrove Center organize guided tours where you can go kayaking and snorkeling through a mangrove channel. The swampy salt water is filled with barrier reefs and sea grass, which provide a home to wonderful creatures such as Queen Conch shells, baby sea horses and lobsters. The sea grass also filters through water in Lac Bay keeping it clean. Kayaking is easy to handle for beginners but if it isn’t your thing, then you may also take a guided solar powered boat tour through the forest. The beauty about these solar powered boats is that the motors are noiseless as to not disturb the underwater life.

About the Queen Conch You will notice as you arrive at Lac Bay, that mountains upon mountains of conch shells await you. This beautiful shell grows in the

shallow waters near the Mangroves of Lac Bay. During the “golden days” there was abundance in the Queen Conch or Karkó as the locals call it. Fishermen would catch about 300 shells a week, hence the mountains of shells. Today, it is an endangered species and the STINAPA, the local nature preserve organization, is petitioning locals and visitors alike to join their “Pride Aware” program to help these endangered species from dying out. What can we do? By adopting one of the tagged conchs, by not disturbing them in their natural habitat or ordering them on a menu we can all make a difference. For more information visit their website www.mangrovecenter.com or call them at (599) 780 5353

Sweet creatures For all you animal lovers out there, make sure to add the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire to your itinerary whilst visiting Bonaire. With a mission set to help ill, abused and orphaned donkeys, this shelter offers these sweet creatures a safe living environment. Bonaire is known as the donkey island for you were literally able to see a donkey every few 100 meters back in the day. There is even a Donkey beach near the Flamingo Airport! Speaking of which, if you want a real airplane encounter then you should definitely spend the day here; for you will see the planes land over your heads.

Over 400 donkeys Owned by husband and wife Ed Koopman and Marina Melis, the Donkey Sanctuary takes care of over 400 donkeys most of them who have been sick or wounded at one point have now been nursed back to health. Orphaned foals are raised by bottle, while the stallions are castrated to prevent overpopulation in the sanctuary. By offering them a protected life, the shelter has raised awareness about the experiences of these animals among local communities, schools and tourists. Their work is much needed on the island, whenever there is a donkey in distress a team of volunteers, accompanied by a vet, head out in the field to help them out. Visit their website: www.donkeysanctuary.org for more information and make sure to stop by whilst in Bonaire.

InselAir Reaching Higher

The Water less Swum

Curaçao’s Best Kept Beach Secrets You know the saying put your dancing shoes on? Well, in this case we ask you to put your swimming shoes on if you want to discover what makes Curaçao one of the most incredible beach experiences in the world.

There are your touristy spots that are heavenly but Curaçao’s raw untouched nature requires some exploring and it will be well worth it. Just one look at the clear blue water at any of the beaches and it will come as no surprise that the island’s drinking water is a product of desalination, which happens to produce some of the cleanest drinking water in the world. If your perfect getaway is a combination of beach, exploring and adventure then you need to hop in a car and drive out to the most western tip of the island. Remember that the fun part about exploring is to make some spontaneous beach stops along the way. Now mind you, Curaçao has over 40 beaches, which is a lot for such a tiny rock in the Caribbean. Therefore, we have selected a few of our own favorites to share with you and thus helping you along your way. InselAir Reaching Higher

In the Spotlight En el Punto de Mira

Playa Lagun

The waters are relatively shallow and very calm making the conditions excellent for snorkeling with the little ones.

Almost hidden by the surrounding limestone cliffs, this small beach lies along the northwestern coast of Curaçao. With every single fish imaginable, Playa Lagun is a favorite among local fishermen and at the same time a haven for their boats and canoes. If you love eel then this is the place to be for there will be a daily batch coming in. This beach is really all about snorkeling. Aside from the Moray eels, the nearby coral reef is also home to the Lion Fish, and sea turtles among many other sea creatures. The turtles come out to eat almost everyday after the fishermen clean out the fish and throw the scraps into the ocean.

The waters are relatively shallow and very calm making the conditions excellent for kids to snorkel. Lagun Beach is as much fun for kids and adults. It is also a very popular place to camp out and there are accommodations nearby if you wish to stay in the area. Playa Lagun has a restaurant overlooking the bay that has rental equipment for snorkeling. The best part is that you get first dibs on any catch of the day upon the fishermen’s return. Watch the sunrise beyond the mountains on the east and linger on until the sunsets over the azure ocean at the end of the day making the experience magical. InselAir Reaching Higher

The highlight of this adventure is the Blue Room Cave, an absolutely thrilling experience. The Blue Room Cave

Boca Santa Cruz The surrounding mangrove swamp makes this beach a less ideal location for snorkeling. At the same time its presence attracts a lot of birds, making it the go-to spot for an exclusive bird watching experience while taking a dip. The only structures out there are a bar, a restaurant, restrooms and Captain Goodlife’s Beach Hut. These days Santa Cruz has become a hub for an out of this world beach hopping experience. If you are looking for an awesome beach adventure then you have come to the right place. The Captain will take you in his water taxi to the most secluded beaches that are rarely accessible to most. Do not hesitate and experience the romantic Lover’s Beach, which is the perfect getaway for 2. There is Santu Pretu (Black Sand) yes the sand is in effect black and the sheltered Playa Hulu. The few who have had the pleasure of visiting Hulu have sworn that it is the most beautiful place they have ever laid eyes on and it is another unique snorkeling experience. beaches along this trail are secluded and can only be reached by boat or foot but we do not recommend the latter. The highlight of this adventure is the Blue Room Cave located near the Mushroom Forest, an absolutely thrilling experience. You can access the cave by taking a short underwater swim. The entrance may feel a bit claustrophobic at first but once inside the rock you will find a wonderful dome filled halfway with still, clear blue water. The little sunlight that reflects through gives the cave a turquoise, sometimes aquamarine color.

Playa ‘Kenepa Grandi’

Playa Forti Also known as West Point Beach, this is an excellent place to relax as it almost never gets overcrowded. A steep ramp with steps takes you down to the water. It is not a sandy beach but the shoreline is filled with tiny pebbles, which are not only easy to walk on but they massage your feet while you are finding your way about. Playa Forti offers another panoramic postcard view of the island’s western tip overlooking the fishing boats and greenery. It also happens to be the spot where daredevils dive of the cliffs.

The Revival of an old Willemstad

Pietermaai Smal

Curaçao’s New Latin Quarter District Pietermaai Smal, the isthmus connecting Punda to the rest of Curaçao has always been a colorful and vibrant district. Traditionally, this was a favorite amongship owners, merchants, civil servants, free blacks and many other interesting characters back in the 18th and 19th centuries. The area lost its appeal for a while in the late 20th century as degenerates ran most of the decent folks out. Luckily, it made a comeback at the turn of the century and is today a lively area. In the Spotlight En el Punto de Mira The architecture reflects the history that this area sits on and new investments have brought in the arrival of wonderful new eateries and clubs turning Pietermaai Smal into a Latin Quarter. Other interesting businesses such as the wonderful wine trading company Servir Frais and Padrino Couture, a one of a kind fashion boutique, together with the colorful residents have all given life to Pietermaai Smal. Here are five trendy spots that are absolutely not to be missed.

Mundo Bizarro For an unforgettable lunch or dining experience, Mundo Bizarro is the epitome of what a Latin Quarter should be. With a Cuban inspired interior design and international cuisine, this is quite the romantic venue. There is a happy hour everyday and live music a few nights a week. It is an ideal place for lounging as it has some quirky chaise lounges and a cute little patio. Try the roasted lamb rack and homemade ice cream for dinner.

Miles Jazz Café Named after world famous Jazz musician Miles Davis, this Jazz Café is one of the most relaxing spots in Pietermaai Smal. It is great for grabbing a beer with your pals while enjoying Jazz music.

InselAir Reaching Higher

History The Association of Caribbean Association of Social Work Educators (ACSWE) was founded in July 1997 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago at the 3rd Biennial Conference of Caribbean and International Social Work Educators. This initiative followed a resolution that was made at the first international conference which was held in Barbados in July 1993.

Continuing Sustainable Social Transformation: Promoting Innovative Social development Praxis in the Caribbean and Latin America. Since 1993 there have been ten (10) biennial conferences which have been held in different Caribbean countries. These conferences organized by ACSWE with support from stakeholders both local and international have been hosted by tertiary level institutions which offer social work programmes. They have been attended by social work educators, researchers, administrators, and practitioners from the Caribbean Community and its Diaspora. Conferences have been held in the countries of Barbados (1993), Guyana (1995), Trinidad and Tobago (1997), Jamaica (1999), Bahamas (2001), Barbados (2003), Jamaica (2005), Trinidad and Tobago (2007), Guyana (2009); and Martinique (2011).

The 11th Biennial conference will be held in July 2013 in the Dutch Caribbean Country of Curaรงao under the theme, Continuing Sustainable Social Transformation: Promoting Innovative Social development Praxis in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Organisation ACSWE seeks to incorporate social workers from the English, French, Dutch and Spanish and Portuguese speaking Caribbean and Latin America, and its Diaspora. It recognizes the common historical as well as the current experiences of the region in shaping solutions and resolutions to regional problems while producing innovative social development praxis that contributes to sustainable regional integration and nation building. The Association was developed to seek ways to improve standards of social work education in the Caribbean; address issues of relevance to Caribbean social work educators, practitioners and policy makers; provide a forum in which issues related to Social Work Education in the region can be discussed; a forum where social work colleagues can share their research and best practices; and a forum where proposals for policy can be developed and where moral and practical support can be given to colleagues. ACSWE facilitates exchange of information on social work education within the Caribbean region, supports the convening of the Biennial Conference of Caribbean and International Social Work Educators, develops strategies which seek to increase recognition of social work as a profession, promotes and supports research on social work issues, contributes to the development and implementation of social policies in the region; and establishes affiliation with other bodies, both regional and international, whose objectives may be to benefit members. ACSWE is a partner of the North American and Caribbean Association of Schools of Social Work (NACASSW) and holds membership in the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW). ACSWE has a board of executives with Dr. Letnie Rock (Barbados) as President and Dr. Keith Carlo (Curaรงao) as Vice President. Other positions of the Association include secretary, treasurer, and members at-large. ACSWE holds a general meeting every two years and it publishes the Caribbean Journal of Social Work which is peer-reviewed.
