Aruba and Curaçao ABOUT THE ISLANDS
INTO THE WILD
Located a stone’s throw away from the coast of Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea, at first glance Aruba and Curaçao may not seem like anything but your typical Caribbean destination. Both islands boast beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal clear oceans. For those loving long strips of beaches, Aruba is where you want to be, while romantics seeking private, secluded beaches will be drawn to Curaçao. However, unlike your typical Caribbean destination, the islands’ dry, desert-like interiors and rugged northern coasts offer a unique playground for the more adventurous soul. Due to their close proximity the islands’ ecosystems might seem similar, but don’t make the mistake of choosing one above the other. You’ll be missing out on an adventure of a lifetime. It’s their subtle differences that make a combined trip the perfect getaway.
Leave the beaches and touristy places for other folks. Seek your primal self by venturing inland. For those who want to reenact Jon Krakauer’s ‘Into the Wild’ on a small scale, Curaçao is the perfect destination. Although the interior of the island has little in common with the Alaskan wilderness, many undeveloped or abandoned sites offer isolation and a unique way to connect with nature. Go

beyond the flamingo spotting station at Rif St. Marie and discover elevated trails with stunning views of the bay against a backdrop of impressive rock formations. Trudge through the remnants of the lake that disappeared - Lago Disparsé and then let the eerie ruins of overgrown indigo basins and the abandoned plantation house in the Malpais area transport you to a time long gone.

Aruba and Curaçao in the area behind Landhuis Mishe, the peaceful salt pans of St. Michiel or walk the coastal trail in the Vaersenbaai/ Bullenbaai area. Even though these and other sites are safe to discover on your own, there are many groups that offer guided nature walks, bird watching trips, nature photography workshops and hiking tours. For those who prefer the convenience of national parks, Aruba’s Arikok National Park might be a good alternative to Curaçao’s undeveloped areas. The national park spans almost 8000 acres of land. Located in the north-eastern part of the island, it offers several ways to connect with nature. The small inlets, natural pools and bays are perfect for a refreshing dip, while the many limestone caves offer a cool retreat and spectacular sights. The rock paintings by the
Caquetío Indians are a must-see for history buffs, while the stunning rock formations will fascinate even the most well-traveled geology buff. Discover the park on your own or opt for a guided tour.
NOT YOUR TYPICAL WATERSPORT MECCAS If solid ground is not your cup of tea, Aruba and Curaçao offer plenty of fun on the water. For the hardcore sports fishermen, the waters surrounding the islands offer plenty of opportunities for big-game fishing. If your sea legs aren’t what they used to be, you might want to consider Aruba’s long stretch of beach with relatively calm, clear waters. It’s perfect for wet and wild adventures, such as kayaking, stand up paddle boarding (SUP) and sailing. For those who enjoy an aerial view, parasailing and the newest extreme sport flyboard-
ing are also on the menu. Rent your water jetpack and hover board and reach for the skies! If you enjoy watersports as well as the feel of a tight-knit community, St. Jorisbaai and Playa Canoa on Curaçao are your best bet. These two mostly undeveloped bays on the north side of the island offer rugged coastlines, surf worthy waves and stunning panoramic views. Become one with this windy scenery while (kite)surfing with fellow local enthusiasts. Evidence of a great community is Fundashon St. Jorisbaai, a foundation with the aim of introducing local kids to watersports and helping them practice a sport they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. The foundation is funded by the proceeds of the Endless Summer Sports Festival - a surf, bike, kite, SUP, run and walk fiesta.

On Curaçao, the Ronde Klip area boasts a state-of-the-art race track: the Curaçao International Raceway. Considered one of the best in the Caribbean, the track was built on a plateau offering excitement as well as panoramic views. Drag racing started on the island over four decades ago and has become one of the most popular pastimes for locals and visitors with a need for speed. Although we do not recommend using your rental Kia Picanto to participate in drag racing, the race schedule on www.curacaodrag.com offers plenty of opportunity for street-legal cars to participate in the fun. >> Arikok National Park, Aruba

On Aruba, thrill seekers can rent an all terrain vehicle (ATV), quad or jeep and go off-roading instead. There are many tour operators offering guided tours, although it’s perfectly safe to hit the road on your own. Make sure though you wear a well-fitted helmet and other safety gear, because it can get pretty rough on the northeast coast. You can also satisfy your need for speed by renting a Harley Davidson and cruise the coast of the island at sunset. Now that may be the wildest way yet to end your adventure on the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curaçao.

The calm waters surrounding much of Bonaire makes kayaking a relaxing way to absorb the beauty of the island. On the windward side, kayaks are available to explore Lac Bay, a lagoon which is a nursery for fish life. The mangroves also create a wonderful set of tunnels in which to see beautiful wildlife. A guided tour is the best way to learn about these sensitive ecosystems and their value to the marine environment.

Rebecca Adventure Travel unique ‘living museum and showcase of evolution’. Located at the confluence of three ocean currents, the Galápagos are a ‘melting pot’ of marine species. Ongoing seismic and volcanic activity are constant reminders of the processes that formed the islands. These processes, together with the extreme isolation of the islands, led to the development of unusual animal life such as the land iguana, the giant tortoise and the many types of fish that are unique to the Galápagos. These animals inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection after his visit in 1835. If you would like to experience the two main islands (Isabela & Santa Cruz), I would recommend taking the 5-day Galapagos Island hopping tour. You will likely see giant turtles, penguins, manta rays, blue footed boobies, white tip sharks and many other species.

EXTREME SPORTS IN ALL REGIONS
About one third of Ecuador is in the Amazon rainforest. The Northern part is called ‘Cuyabeno National Park’ and from there you can enter the jungle and stay in one of the many eco-lodges. One of the unique features of this area is the pink dolphin that can be spotted here.
Ecuador is a very diverse country that offers many natural wonders and climates. The Andes Mountains are beautiful with all their volcanoes. The country of Ecuador has the highest concentration of volcanoes in the world. In the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains you’ll find the Paramo region which is considered the highlands. You will also have the opportunity to see the Equator line and explore the Paramo landscapes, with their great fauna, including condors, wolves, wild horses and other interesting animals.
I would recommend the 4-day Amazon tour in which you will visit local communities, see piranhas, go on jungle hikes and explore the Amazon by kayak.

COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK VISIT This active volcano is located about 1.5 hours from Quito and is the perfect example of a stratovolcano. It is possible to climb to the summit (5,897m) or go mountain biking or horseback riding in the flat lands of the Cotopaxi National Park.

Bookreview Reseña del libro NEW CARIBBEAN READING: NOTABLE FICTION AND NON-FICTION. THE WIDER CARIBBEAN IS EXPLORED IN MANY DIMENSIONS – HUMAN, HISTORIC, CULTURAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL – BY INSIGHTFUL AUTHORS IN 2016. HERE ARE A FEW INTRIGUING BOOKS IN BOTH RECENT FICTION AND NON-FICTION.
THE DISTANT MARVELS Chantel Acevedo [Europa Editions, 2015] “Our lives are diminishing ripples in vast waters” observes the narrator of this lyrical and unforgettable novel by Cuban-American writer Chantel Acevedo. From its opening pages to its closing moments, The Distant Marvels is a moving revelation of a long and often turbulent life, one in which significant episodes both personal and of wider events form the narrative across decades. Maria Serena, the central character and narrator, is well suited to convey her own past to others. Having worked as a ‘lectora’ in a cigar factory telling stories to the workers, she now accounts for the significant moments of her own journey while she shelters with other women in the midst of a hurricane evacuation. The novel begins and ends in the Cuba of the early Sixties as the Castro revolution sweeps away old structures. What endures here is the inner vision of Maria Serena which remains connected to the key events and people of both her early childhood and adult years – from parents to lovers and friends and the high and low points she must navigate between each one. All distant but still vivid marvels which she passes on to her fellow travelers and us her readers.

FAMOUS AFTER DEATH Brian Bandell [Silver Leaf Books, 2015] A young generation adrift and alienated from family and social structures provide one set of actors in this contemporary thriller set in the outwardly sunny world of Miami’s beaches and outlying neighborhoods. Grasping at the ultimate misuse of digital technologies, this loose collection of teenagers slip into a reckless spiral of murder and mayhem to gain their escapades the maximum attention in social media.
Everything else has gone viral. Why not murder? When bored and alienated teens Chris, Jorge and Kelso launch themselves into online mischief, their dark descent escalates after a police officer is killed in an auto accident they set up and capture in live Internet stream. The viral sensation this creates leads them to produce even more transmissions of violence and murder. They not only defy the law in their viral crimes but also begin to attack it directly through the personal lives of the officers and detectives assigned to track them down. How to confront and overcome this type of amoral online behavior and its real consequences becomes the challenge for the main protagonist and his fellow law enforcement officers on the case. A gripping and disturbing look into lives lived on the edge in Miami.
LORENA GARCIA’S NEW TACO CLASSICS Lorena Garcia [Celebra, 2015] The taco has an extraordinary culinary range and variety that reaches from one side of Latin America to the other - and points in between. Along that journey in New Taco Classics, food and chef superstar and culinary author Lorena Garcia explores the regional ingredients and interpretations that make the local taco something distinct within the wider taco world. In this adventure through the classic taco legacies of the Americas, Garcia looks at not only the traditional taco but also other Latin bite-sized dishes – among them, arepas, tamales and tostadas – through fusions of Latin and non-Latin flavors. She deconstructs the traditional taco and focuses on the one theme that is central to the comfort foods from the streets of Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and Cuba, discussing it within the concept of ‘food in a vessel’. With this theme in mind, Garcia builds a brand new taco template, and shows how anyone can create each layer. Starting with the base – the corn which becomes the taco, arepa, sope, empanada or even a tamal, she then continues to the many varieties of fillings and toppings along with side dishes to pair them with. With over 100 recipes of sauces and salsas, protein and vegetable fillings, taco shells and corn wrappings to make a variety of Latin street-food dishes, this cookbook— filled with colorful, enticing photography—is easy to follow and great for everyday meals and casual entertaining.

Saint-Martin
ISLAND OF A THOUSAND FLAVORS
THE ISLAND WAS NAMED ‘SAINT-MARTIN’ ON NOVEMBER 11, 1493 BY CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS IN HONOR OF THE BISHOP OF SAINT MARTIN OF TOURS. THE ISLAND WAS, AND STILL IS INHABITED BY A COSMOPOLITAN MIXTURE OF OVER 100 DIFFERENT NATIONALITIES INCLUDING ENGLISH, SPANISH, FRENCH AND DUTCH. THE FIRST SETTLERS WERE EXPLORERS, PIRATES, FREEBOOTERS, AND BUCCANEERS.
of a thousand faces’! A land divided in two, shared by two sovereign nations (France and Holland), but whose inhabitants are united as one. A monument is the only indicator that there is an international border between the two sides of the island. Saint-Martin has the distinction of being the smallest island in the world to be divided between two sovereign nations.
LA ISLA DE LOS MIL SABORES LA ISLA, QUE ANTERIORMENTE SE CONOCÍA COMO SOUALIGA (‘TIERRA DE SAL’) ENTRE LOS INDÍGENAS ARAWAKS, FUE BAUTIZADA ‘SAN MARTÍN’ POR CRISTÓBAL COLÓN EL 11 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1493 EN HONOR AL OBISPO SAN MARTÍN DE TOURS. LA ISLA ESTABA Y SIGUE HABITADA POR UNA MEZCLA COSMOPOLITA DE MÁS DE 100 NACIONALIDADES DIFERENTES, INCLUIDAS PERSONAS INGLESAS, ESPAÑOLAS, FRANCESAS Y HOLANDESAS. LOS PRIMEROS COLONIZADORES FUERON EXPLORADORES, PIRATAS, FILIBUSTEROS Y BUCANEROS. TRANSLATION BY KAREL THIJS
The island is only 87 km2 in size, of which the French side accounts for 53 km2. Despite its small size, the island offers a wide range of landscapes: mountains, valleys, plains, beaches and even a peak of volcanic origin named suggestively ‘Pic Paradis’. For ecotourists, a visit to the National Nature Reserve (30.6 km2), the Loterie Farm and the AGOA sanctuary for marine mammals are a must. Don’t forget a horseback riding excursion. The island of Saint-Martin has everything to be a slice of heaven on earth. The white sand contrasts with the turquoise sea, which merges with the blue sky. l 23 de marzo de 1648, los franceses y los holandeses acordaron compartir la isla de forma pacífica.
MIX AND MATCH; A VARIETY OF PEOPLE Pietermaai District’s allure draws business men, artists, students and travelers alike. The combination of different people of all ages with different backgrounds, residents and tourists, makes Pietermaai District a friendly and multicultural neighborhood where everyone feels at home. It has
everything a local or tourist needs within walking distance. Even though many of its current residents are new to the area, Pietermaai District still has a few families that have been in the neighborhood for generations. They are the key to preserving the old traditions in the neighborhood and perhaps they will inspire more families to return to the area. Travelers can immerse themselves in the local Pietermaai District culture by taking their pick of places to stay in the area.
EAT, DRINK, SLEEP AND DIVE Most of the 200-year old mansions and worker houses, while monuments in the meantime, have been renovated and given a new lease on life. They have been restored to their original state and transformed into idyllic restaurants, hotels, apartments and suites. Boutique accommodations, small shops, cozy little cafés and top-rated restaurants snuggle together, making the neighborhood easily walkable and perfect for exploring at your leisure. Pietermaai District is not only located ‘just a stone’s throw away’ from the city center of Willemstad, but it is also steps from the Caribbean Sea. Some establishments even have a spectacular oceanfront location, which makes Pietermaai District a popular place for divers.

Since the year 2000, Pietermaai District has undergone a major metamorphosis. Not all neglected monuments are restored yet, but that is what gives the area that social, vivid, raw edge. It is said that the area was named after the Dutch captain Pieter de Meij. The suburb attracted wealthy merchants resulting in impressive mansions built in the Dutch architectural styles of the 18th and 19th centuries. In the mid-19th century, after the city walls were torn down, Pietermaai District became a hub for ideas, business and culture. Originally a residential neighborhood in the early 18th century, Pietermaai District was created due to a lack of space within the city walls of Punda. Now, the area is home to many trendy lounge areas, dotted with specialty shops and art studios - a perfect combination of the old and the new.

In Miami’s South Beach, on the Southern end of Ocean Drive, is where you will find this cozy Steak house with the most badass menu that will make your taste buds rock! The ambiance is cozy. Will Smith seated at the table next to mine should have added to an exquisite experience, however the service was almost a terrible one with the busy waiters focused more on making money than caring for customers. I can’t blame them but I am a girl who loves hospitality, charm and the right amount of attention, which was all missing here. However, make no mistake, the steaks here are so outstanding in quality that nothing can spoil my experience! The meat is perfectly aged and cooked with a
The service was almost a terrible one pepper sauce that is to-die-for and I say ‘bring it on’ as everything served here is very high quality. The French onion soup was transformed to Yankee onion soup with a very thick crust and lots of melted cheese, full bodied, and tasty. The Tuna tartar, served with a raw quail egg on top and chopped scallions, had subtle flavors but was simply magnificent. The red beet salad was huge and served with a divine dressing. My tip would be to share dishes!

JOE’S STONE CRAB
I don’t think it’s possible to go further south on Miami’s, South Beach without bumping into Joe’s Stone Crab. A must go! For over 100 years (founded in 1913) this has been the place to be in South Beach. The stone crabs here are to-die-for and that’s because the staff (of 400) select the best crabs available, cook them and crack them by hand before they end up on your table. The ambiance is slightly out dated, but very cozy. Make no mistake, it’s not only the stone crabs which are killer here; it’s also the large shrimps, Alaskan King crab, and all the other fish dishes. The service is quick and very friendly and the prices are more than reasonable. For example, the price of the fried chicken is $6.95 and would you believe me if I
told you that this price recently went up by $1? The rack of ribs is simply sublime and so well marinated that the meat literally falls off the bone and the sides are ambrosial, like tomatoes, Brussels sprouts and deep fried asparagus.
The sides are ambrosial Joe’s is not just about Stone crabs anymore and as they age and smoke their own beef. I would recommend you give it a try. For dessert, I try a classic and, coming from New York City I do know cheesecake, and this one is not bad at all, in fact it is heavenly.

The Salmon tartar is out of this world ach-like veggie and minty Greek yoghurt, is not only perfectly combined flavors, it is also a great vitamin boost, colorful and scrumptious. The Salmon tartar is out of this world, made of the best quality Salmon and so well marinated you still taste the buttery Salmon. The Stone Crabs here are a must and it would be hard to find anything as fresh as their fish selection. PARAMARIBO IS THE VIBRANT CAPITAL CITY OF SURINAME. IT’S BEST KNOWN FOR ITS FUN, SUN AND A FRIENDLY POPULATION. LET’S VISIT DOWNTOWN. BY ANOUSKA BLANCA
The vibrancy of Paramaribo begins with its name, which means ‘a place of flowering plants’. This was once a city of indigenous peoples. Nowadays it is home to a beautiful thriving population, with a multi-ethnic background. Their welcoming smiles will make you feel at home. In downtown Paramaribo you will see, feel and experience samples from around the world, all in one place. The commercial and political centers of the country are situated here. The beautiful historic buildings,“which softly whisper their past”, together with the modern shops and offices that operate in these building, create a unique atmosphere. It is for that reason that Paramaribo was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2002.
HISTORIC BUILDINGS In the midst of the city sits the Palm Garden - a large park where you can go for a walk and enjoy nature’s peace in the middle of the hectic city. This garden roughly divides the city in two.

On the one side of the Palm Garden you can walk past the Palace of the Republic of Suriname to Independence Square, where if you are lucky you may be able to enjoy a traditional singing bird contest. Here too you will find the waterfront, which teems with typical Surinamese life. You will also have a wonderful view of the largest bridge in the country over the Suriname river. Have a pleasant stroll under the almond trees, while enjoying the soothing river breeze. Along the way you will find many restaurants and food stands offering typical Surinamese cuisine. Heading towards the commercial center you will enjoy photographing the unique historic buildings with Dutch, English and Spanish influences. Each one tells its own story.

In the Keizerstreet you can experience the most peaceful sensation; a synagogue next to a mosque, which is a well-known global symbol of Suriname. de la vida Surinamés.

RULES To solve these Sudoku puzzles, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. By working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead you to the correct solution.

LAST INSIGHTS
Unplug on vacation A FEW WEEKENDS AGO, I WENT ON A HIKE IN THE MOUNTAINS OUTSIDE OF SEATTLE. WHEN I REACHED THE SUMMIT OF THE MOUNTAIN, I FELT MY PHONE BUZZ INSIDE MY POCKET. IT WAS AN EMAIL FROM WORK - NOTHING URGENT, BUT THE REMINDER OF THE WORLD I (THOUGHT) I HAD LEFT BEHIND PULLED ME OUT OF MY ACTIVITY (SADLY, IN THE SEATTLE AREA IT’S STILL POSSIBLE TO GET CELL SERVICE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOODS). BY NEAL MCNAMARA
Buffer days: Perhaps the most overlooked part of planning a vacation. If you’re going on a trip for a week, you need to build a few decompression days into your vacation. For example, if you’re returning from a week in Aruba on a Sunday, make sure to take Monday off. That way, you get a day to relax before heading back into the office. Go rural: When you plan a vacation, pick a place that doesn’t have cell service or Internet. You might think it’s hard to get away from the seemingly infinite reach of the Internet, but it is possible. And you don’t have to go to the forest. It’s very hard to find an Internet connection in Cuba with only 4.1 percent of households having access, according to a 2013 report by the UN, and cell service is administered through the government like a public utility.
SOMETIMES, THE HARDEST PART ABOUT WORK IS GETTING AWAY FROM IT I
n 2016, there are so many ways for us to keep working even if we’re not at work, and so taking a real vacation is harder than ever. But there are steps you can take to truly leave work behind, whether you’re heading off for a two-week vacation, or just want to disconnect for the weekend. If you’re having trouble truly taking a break from work, check out some of these helpful tips.
76
Have a contingency plan: Stop worrying about missed emails and calls by setting up a point of contact in your absence. An out-of-office email should include the name and contact information of a qualified colleague. Same goes for voicemail. If you leave some of your duties in a responsible coworker’s hands, you can disconnect without anxiety. Leave it at home: Simply leave your electronics behind. You don’t need a laptop on vacation (unless you’re working on your novel), and paying for cell service overseas can be expensive. You might feel like you’re giving up a safety line, but even as recently as 10 years ago, many of us got by just fine without smartphones. The most important thing to remember about vacations is that they’re good for you. If you’re worried about missing work or letting your coworkers down, just know that if you truly take a vacation, you’ll come back to work recharged and in better shape to tackle your responsibilities.
