CLASSIC SAILING - SOLO, CREWED AND RACING CHALLENGES Favorable offshore conditions make St. Martin ideal for every level of sailor, with local tour and charter operators at various marinas and other points along the coast. Usually, these offer some choice in itinerary and type or model of sailboat - along with a fully-crewed yacht if you prefer. One such example of first-class sailing options is found at Marina Fort Louis, in Marigot on the French side of the island. Here, St. Martin Charters operates a variety of sailing expeditions using a fleet of both monohull and catamaran craft. Their charter menu ranges from week-long, fully-crewed itineraries to other islands in the Leeward chain - St. Barths, Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis, depending on the season - to shorter excursions along the St. Martin coast for one day or more, with or without crew. Along with that, they will customize your itinerary to include any pause desired at the most interesting towns or shoreline events. Sailing opportunities also exist on Dutch St. Maarten, for instance Aqua Mania Adventures based at the Simpson Bay Resort and offering multi-hull and catamaran fully equipped touring to neighboring St. Barths and Anguilla. Closer to St. Maarten, leisurely evening cruises that include dining are also popular. For those who are also fans of competitive sailing - two options exist that are well worth considering during your time on St. Maarten. In early March, competitive yachtsmen and spectators alike descend on the St. Maarten Yacht Club for the annual Heineken Regatta - a world-class event featuring races over three days both offshore and within the huge inland Simpson Bay Lagoon, a body of water with some challenging wind and current conditions. More unusual but no

10

>> 12 Metre Challenge

Competitive yachtsmen and spectators alike descend on the St. Maarten Yacht Club for the annual Heineken Regatta less exhilarating is the chance to try your own hand at some world-class racing - all possible thanks to the 12 Metre Challenge. In the course of this half-day experience off Philipsburg, participants sail an actual America’s Cup race boat in a modified and shortened version of the America’s Cup sailing tournament. The competing yachts - including champion

Dennis Conner’s 'Stars & Stripes' - were built for the last 12 Metre America’s Cup race in Australia in 1987, and represent the finest of their design. The yachts are match raced in a triangle format comprised of three upwind and two downwind legs. Guests can grind a winch, trim a sail, punch a stop watch - or just sit back and savor this adventure.

Deep sea fishing also enjoys its own annual competition - the St. Martin Billfish Tournament which is open to all

levels of angler experience each June. For the competitive-minded, this is the ideal opportunity to try their hand and rod for a big catch - be it blue marlin, wahoo, dolphin or mahi-mahi in the waters off French St. Martin. >> St. Maarten Yacht Charters

Whether you are a first-time or experienced angler, the thrill of the hunt for big fish off St. Maarten provides yet another route to exploring the offshore depths. Longtime expert in this category is Lee’s Deep Sea Fishing, which has been offering deep sea fishing expeditions to the public for over forty years. Anglers bring their sunscreen and shades, but everything else is laid on for your outing into the deep trenches for blue or white marlin, wahoo, mahi mahi and tuna - fishing tackle, refreshments and a light lunch on full day trips. Lee’s will take you out some 10 to 12 miles offshore on its half- and three-quarter day outings, and from 24 to 30 miles on its full-day trips. Much depends on how your captain assesses the weather

conditions as far as best spot to troll that day. Lee’s own grill onshore will also fix up your own catch of the day.

>> Kayakers at the Simpson Bay

ADVENTUROUS KAYAKING: LAGOON AND SHORELINE Simpson Bay Lagoon is the Caribbean's largest saltwater lagoon - and you will see much when you paddle within it and beyond- from unspoilt mangrove areas to busy docks and large ships. The major outfitter for kayaking in the area is Tri-Sport, who have been taking kayakers out around this inland lagoon and coastally for many years.

12

What to expect during their popular Bay and Lagoon tour? Your outing begins on a lagoon area beach, then eventually pass through a channel where you may observe crabs and iguanas on the rocks. Then paddle along to the marina areas to reach the mangrove shore. On the approach, you may see tarpon hunting in these shallow grounds or startle some flying fish. Relax at the mangroves before heading back, with a possible swim

at Simpson Bay Beach on your return. The pre-kayak introduction is perfect for getting beginners comfortable kayaking for the first time but also gives tips for those more experienced paddlers. By the end of our own session, we came away a more skilled kayaker in navigating both lagoon and coastal currents. Along the way also, we were as much engaged by the sights around us as the sightings below - the diversity of craft from sleek yachts to full-size ocean ships at birth, and below us the fascinating glimpses of marine life. Like every adventure in and on the waters of St. Maarten - the natural and the man-made come together to create brilliant moments that draw you in - and take away to re-live in your recollections later.

BLOWING INTO THE FUTURE HARNESSING GREEN ENERGY AT CURAÇAO’S WIND FARMS FEW THINGS ARE HARD TO MISS WHEN YOUR PLANE IS MAKING ITS FINAL APPROACH TO CURAÇAO. T

he people of Curaçao have always known how to take full advantage of the Northeast wind that blows on the island. Windmills have been used for hundreds of years to pump water for households and plantation fields. Houses have been built to facilitate the flow of wind, a great strategy to keep the living space cool. Curaçao’s relationship with the strong wind has grown even stronger now it’s being harnessed to generate electricity. The Tera Kora and Playa Canoa Wind farms generate energy for about 6000 homes.

LEADERS IN THE CARIBBEAN With the current expansion of the Tera Kora Wind Farm with five new wind turbines, Curaçao is looking to meet 16% of the island’s electricity demand. In fact, Curaçao, Bonaire and Aruba are prime examples of innovative and clean energy solutions in the region. Wind is a big option for clean and sustainable energy, especially in a a part of the world where paying for water and electricity is at an all time high. All three islands are known to have great generation capacity and in terms of efficiency, Curaçao’s wind farms give the rest of the world a run for their money.

16

Curaçao’s wind farms give the rest of the world a run for their money VISITING THE WIND FARMS Both wind farms are located at the rocky Northern coast, which are remote and not ideal for swimming. Still, it is entirely possible to visit these engineering masterpieces. You can either drive or take an ATV or Buggy tour to visit both areas. If you are driving to the Tera Kora Wind farm, look for the 'Free Zone Hato' sign west of the airport. Take the turn and then turn left onto a dirt road towards the San Pedro plains. The wind turbines will be straight ahead after a 30-minute drive.

OFF-THE-BEATEN ADVENTURE The adventurous types can continue off-roading towards Boca Ascension. The beautiful route has interesting caves including 'Cueva di Bos di San Antonio' and 'Fudu Cave', the largest of the many caves. You will also drive past Wood Bay, where large quantities of driftwood wash

ashore. There is also a dive site for the extremists, but the grand prize goes to Boca Ascension itself, which is home to Curaçao’s largest turtle population and a powerful blowhole.

BOCA SAN PEDRO DIVE SITE The Boca San Pedro dive site makes an interesting off-the-beaten adventure. Park your car at the second windmill on the San Pedro plain and walk towards the bay. There is a descend on the steep path towards the water. The entrance from the beach is ridden with rocks and sharp volcanic stones, so bring dive boots. You have to swim a fair distance on the surface to reach the drop-off, but once there the dive will be worth it as a great variety coral is waiting for you. This dive is exclusive for very experienced divers. Keep in mind, the waters are extremely rough on the north shore.

DIA DI RINCON BONAIRE’S MOST CELEBRATED FESTIVITY

The annual Kareda Playa-Rincon, a 17 kilometer long walk competition that starts in the capital Kralendijk, ends in Rincon amidst all the partying. Open to both men and women of all ages, the competition has different categories and prize money is won.

CELEBRATING SIMADAN Dia di Rincon’s highlight has to be the Simadan celebration which starts in the afternoon with a traditional parade. Men

and women dance the Wapa, a rhythmic motion forward and backward performed arm in arm in long lines. There is a more modern version of the dance in the evening hours. The colourful dresses and choreography are beautiful to look at, but what catches the attention even more are the unique instruments used to make music such as farming tools and empty conch shells (karkó). Music is also made with the marimba, the wiri, barí, and the triangle far. This takes culture, tradition and creativity to a whole new level.

WALKING COMPETITION

2017 will mark the 29th edition of Dia di Rincon. If you happen to be in town, there are a few things you'll need to know! The day kicks off at 8:00 AM in front of Rincon's Catholic church. The flag of Rincon (yes they have their own) is raised to the beat of drums, followed by a mass to bless the day’s festivities. There are long rows of stalls selling local sweets and cuisine, beer, souvenirs and Rincon's own Cadushi liquor made from cacti.

Rincon is the oldest town in Bonaire and the entire Dutch Caribbean for that matter. Build by Spanish settlers in the early 16th century, it was ideally situated north of the island in an inland valley out of sight of Dutch, English or French pirates. Today, Rincon is considered Bonaire's cultural center. The town hosts an array of festivals annually including Simadan, Dia di San Juan, Dia di Rincon and the Barí Festival. There is a monthly market on the first Saturday of every month and a smaller weekly version every Saturday (Marshe Chikitu).

Book review Reseña del libro CARIBBEAN READING: NEW FICTION AND NON-FICTION. CITY NEIGHBORHOODS, REMOTE ISLETS, COSMOPOLITAN AND COUNTRYSIDE – ALL PROVIDE IMAGINATIVE AND REAL CANVASES FOR THESE NEW BOOKS IN BOTH FICTION AND NON-FICTION. BY HAL PEAT

ARTY GRAS Andrew Freedman [AK Foto, Inc., 2016] Art always seeks out new surfaces and relationships with its viewing world. In the case of Miami’s Wynwood district, the surfaces are immediate in the mural art that dominates the exteriors of this extraordinary urban landscape. In Arty Gras, local author/ photographer Andrew Freedman produces the final volume in a trilogy that details the emergence, development and challenges of Wynwood's street art. With some 150 images in this latest soft cover book, Freedman conveys much of the huge spectrum of style present on the walls here. As Freedman points out about street art itself, there is a distinction to be made between muralist and graffiti. Diversity of vision, background and purpose is as broad across Wynwood as the results that emerge on its surfaces. But while it has become an 'arty gras' party here, Freedman's new book also observes the transitory nature of this direct art. Thus, we see an image of vivid pattern enlivening a building juxtaposed with another image taken just after the same building has been torn down or painted over. Along the way, we understand how Wynwood evolved so rapidly into an open-air gallery of direct and vibrant expression.

THE VEINS OF THE OCEAN Patricia Engel [Grove Press, 2016] The shores of south Florida, of Cuba and Colombia all become human stages linked by the veins of the tropical seas in this novel of entwined generations whose American journey spirals into tragedy. The narrator Reina Castillo recalls not only the episodes of horror and violence that enveloped her family but also her own sense of responsibility as instigator of her brother's destruction. Reina’s parents came to Miami from Colombia for a better life, only to see it shatter when Reina’s father discovers her mother’s secret. The violence is repeated in the next generation when her brother is sentenced to death for a crime for which Reina inwardly blames herself. The pain is compounded by her brother’s subsequent suicide and Reina moves onward to the Florida Keys seeking solitude. There she meets Nesto, a recently arrived Cuban awaiting the children he left behind in Havana. Through his love of the sea, and capacity for faith, she comes to understand her own connections to both life-giving and destructive forces that surround her. Through the power of companionship and love and the natural world, she moves toward release from the burden of the past.

ISLAND PEOPLE: THE CARIBBEAN AND THE WORLD Joshua Jelly-Schapiro [Alfred A. Knopf, 2016] This immensely readable book by Joshua JellySchapiro delivers an incisive portrait of both cultures and individual lives which the author encounters from Cuba to Trinidad and points between. Never too academic or obscure, Island People delves into the past and present of each island society through a cultural prism - musical, literary, artistic, ethnic - bringing also into perspective the connection between islands and the wider connecting points between these Caribbean places and far beyond. Jelly-Schapiro traveled to the Caribbean for the first time at 19 and then spent most of the next fifteen years exploring from Jamaica to Puerto Rico, Barbados to St. Lucia, and from Cuba to Dominica to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. His journeys through these islands where many of the traits we think of as uniquely 'modern' in their effects on identity - mass migration and transcontinental trade, the mixing of cultures and races - have been evident for centuries. His book reveals the Caribbean’s central role in the making of our modern world, a reality which he illustrates in episodes that take the reader into the heart of an island and into understanding the astounding depth and range of its connections to the wider world.

Peggy's Restaurant Review

FOR OVER 25 YEARS, MANHATTAN BASED TV CHEF PEGGY TJIN, HAS TRAVELED THE WORLD AS A GLOBAL FOOD CRITIC OF HIGH-END VENUES AND REPORTS BACK TO HER FOLLOWERS. WE PROUDLY PRESENT PEGGY TJIN'S BY PEGGY TJIN

On the historical Pen Street, just off the beach in Curaçao, you will find a stunning venue called No 5. It’s clear that they are inspired by CoCo Chanel and in the restaurant, which is located in a monumental building, you will find lots of little objects that remind you of the great icon, herself. The venue is very cozy and has a seating area upstairs as well. The service is excellent! Even with the owner in the kitchen and running around serving tables, everyone gets the right amount of attention. The menu offers you seasonal dishes with a very creative twist and the most breathtaking combination of flavors. The Ravioli in Oxtail, for example, is served with veal in a sweet potato sauce. This heavenly combination of sweet and savory meat will make you tremble with joy! The Pork a la Ivo Molenbeek (the name of the owner) is an absolutely dazzling dish and reminds me of a killer char sieuw, however I do recognize the signature ingredients added to make this dish epic! The Red Snapper served with salad and a green pea dressing is also amazing but the fish is slightly overcooked and therefore a little too dry for me. The Apple Tartin Dulce de Leche, served with a sauce made with Vanilla and Jack Daniel’s whiskey, is absolutely 'to die for' as the apple flavor is fresh but the combination really rocks!

XQUISIT Baden Powelweg 1, Curaçao T (+5999) 435-5090 In the heart of Curaçao, in the Renaissance shopping mall, you will find the eclectic establishment called Xquisit. The ambiance is stunning and modern with lots of steel and Art. The service is outstanding and the menu varies every 3 months, however the steaks here are a definite must! The menu offers ravishing fusion dishes, which are all beautifully served like little works of art. I start with The Salmon Grouper Carpaccio, which is bland but the Cheese ravioli, served with a killer sauce, is an epic dish. The meatballs, served on a bed of mashed potato, are a little dry but very tasty. The rib eye is an awesome quality steak, perfectly cooked and served with a delicious pepper sauce on the side. I also try the tenderloin and notice immediately what an amazing cut it is - better than the rib eye and, once again, it’s perfectly cooked. The side dishes are simply gorgeous – especially the asparagus, which has a perfect al dente bite. The crème brulee, which is always a challenge, is ‘the bomb’ with a lovely crispy top layer, but the mint cake with chocolate mousse is 'to die for' - OMG! What an outstanding dessert.

BLUES Penstraat 130, Avila Beach, Curaçao T (+5999) 461-4377 You will find Blues in the stunning beach hotel Avila, in a lovely part of Curaçao near the historical Pen Street. When King of The Netherlands visits this island, it’s his favorite place to stay and I totally understand why because this little treasure offers gracious ambiance, live jazz and the best food. I start with a delicious mustard soup followed by a very flavorful salmon salad, even though the plate is too overloaded with smoked salmon. The value is spot on as the portions here are large and I would advise you to share dishes. The Pinchos, otherwise known as skewers, are the thing to order here. You can order fresh fish skewers or a selection of different meats barbequed on a charcoal grill, which makes every single Pinchos super scrumptious. Even the veggies are on a skewer and I adore the way they serve the skewer hanging on the side of the table so you can serve yourself. The variety of side dishes is absolutely gorgeous and the sauces served with the Pinchos, like the Chimichuri, are heavenly. I enjoy how everything is fresh - even the music - on the top floor local jazz players like to come here and start jam sessions. Pinch me as I may be in heaven, especially when dessert is served! The pineapple turnover is my favorite - the way they barbecue the pineapple makes your head spin! The brownie is a little dry but that doesn’t spoil the marvelous night I’ve had at Blues - a wonderful meal, outstanding service and great music, all under the stars - what else could I want?

LAST INSIGHTS

BEING A BETTER GLOBAL LEADER IN 2017 THERE’S GOOD NEWS FOR WORKERS: THE GLOBAL UNEMPLOYMENT IS EXPECTED TO DECREASE IN 2017. THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS ON A CONTINUING DOWNWARD TREND IN THE U.S., HITTING 4.9% IN JANUARY, AND EXPERTS PREDICT THE EU RATE WILL DROP BY .2%. BUT FOR EMPLOYERS, A STRONGER JOB MARKET MEANS EMPLOYEES WILL BE MORE WILLING TO LEAVE. TINYPULSE’S RESEARCH FOUND THAT A QUARTER OF ALL EMPLOYEES WOULD BE WILLING TO LEAVE THEIR CURRENT JOBS FOR A 10% RAISE. (ALTHOUGH THE REASONS THEY WANT TO LEAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE ARE LIKELY NOT RELATED TO MONEY.) BY KETTI SALEMME

T

his means employee engagement is globally more crucial than ever. Organizations are already looking for ways to improve culture, create stronger teams, and reduce turnover. With this in mind, here are some of what we believe will be the leading trends in employee engagement in 2017.

PEERS WILL BE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT One thing our research consistently finds across nations and cultures in the importance of colleagues who work well together. It makes intuitive sense-who wouldn’t want to go to work every day with their friends? Because the support of coworkers is so critical, organizations are looking for ways to encourage these bonds. According to a WorldatWork survey, 42% of organizations have a peer-topeer recognition tool in place. We expect organizations to continue investing in

32

peer-to-peer recognition. Those shoutouts from colleagues for a job well done are inherently valuable. Companies will need to redouble their efforts in this area- our latest study shows satisfaction with colleagues actually decreased in 2016.

MIDDLE MANAGERS WILL FINALLY BE RECOGNIZED The title of 'middle manager' isn’t exactly awe-inspiring. You might first think of the clueless boss from Dilbert or Bill Lumbergh from Office Space. But it turns out that managers play a pivotal role in driving engagement. In fact, our research found that employees prefer direct supervisors to implement engagement strategies. Managers are also key in providing meaningful feedback for employees. While they might not have the same authority as c-suite executives, these professionals are making (or breaking) engagement efforts.

DEMAND FOR FASTER, MORE RELEVANT FEEDBACK In 2017, many feel that the old annual performance review system is broken. Employees and managers hate it. These reviews are too long and often try to cover too much. Managers frequently focus on the last month or two without discussing the first ten or eleven months of the year. No wonder Globoforce found that 51% of employees see their reviews as inaccurate due to the lag. But technology can play a big role in providing instant, consistent feedback. Towers-Watson found that only 44 percent of organizations do an effective job using technology to deliver the performance management process itself. In 2017, we believe this will change. Employees and managers want stronger feedback processes, which will surely contribute to better organizational health.

INCREASING INVESTMENT IN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT According to Deloitte University Press, 86% of HR and global organizations said developing leadership is a priority. However, a scant 6% of companies think their leadership pipeline is up to the task. Internal promotion is a proven method for maintaining strong leadership. But companies need to be intentional about developing leaders. And they’re going to have to be: A study by Pew shows that 10,000 baby boomers will retire every day from 2010 until 2030. Organizations need to invest in talented millennial and generation Y employees who can sustain their success. Sometimes trends are mere passing fads. But we believe these employee engagement trends are more than just a blip on the radar. They’re the core elements companies will focus on to improve retention.
