An exciting year for InselAir by edward heereveen, chief international affairs inselair
As cliché as it sounds, writing this article makes me realize how fast this year is flying by. Usually this happens when a year is filled with exciting events, which 2014 certainly was for InselAir. In 2014 we added three destinations to our route network: La Romana in the Dominican Republic, Barranquilla in Colombia, and Georgetown in British Guyana. We have also added extra non-stop flights between Miami and Aruba, Valencia and Aruba, and Paramaribo and Aruba. We have expanded our fleet with five aircraft and also invested in a new website. Furthermore, on August 28th InselAir celebrated its 8th anniversary! This is what I believe life should be about; a combination of hard work, doing what you love and, on occasion, celebrating the milestones.
Investing in the future
2014 was about investing in the future for InselAir. We have added three Fokker 50 and two Fokker 70 aircraft to our growing fleet, which will support our current and future routes; which include destinations in Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Colombia and Puerto Rico. Plus all our aircrafts are being refurbished to provide more comfort for you, our passenger.

“Sociable” is probably the best word to describe Suriname, perhaps a typically Caribbean characteristic. On any given afternoon, you will find families and friends sitting in front of their homes socializing, at the Chinese shop on the corner or driving to the interior to enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed atmosphere. What is never missing from Surinamese sociability is: food. If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, then Suriname will Surely win your heart. This country, with about 500,000 inhabitants, has a diversity of cultures. This is the uniqueness of Suriname! Peacefully co-existing are, among others, the Creoles, Javanese, Hindustanis, Muslims, Jews, Indians, Maroons, and
Chinese. Each group has their own traditions, values, standards, and habits but live together peacefully.
Convergence
“However we came here, to this land we are pledged,” reads a line from the national anthem. This ‘convergence’ is the starting point of Suriname history. One of the best known Surinamese poets, Gerrit Barron says in one of his poems that Suriname is the “land of the Indians”. This goes without saying! For centuries they inhabited this area. They are the “guardians” of the land and this is still how they feel and see themselves. The two largest tribes in Suriname are the Arawak and the Caribbean but there are also other smaller tribes like the

Trio, Warau, and Wayana. Despite centuries of Western influence they have been able to retain their traditions and culture. The first successful European colonization took place in 1650, led by the Englishman Francis Willoughby. In 1667 the area was conquered by the Dutchman Abraham Crijnssen during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Throughout its history, Suriname would change hands several times, eventually ending up in Dutch hands in 1815. Dutch Guiana was divided, with Suriname remaining in possession of the Netherlands and Guyana becoming a British Colony. Although centuries ago, this period is still a dark page in our history, because as a result of colonization, slavery was introduced and lasted about 250 years. Many slaves managed to flee into the woods and, with the help of the Indians they were able to survive as free people. The whites called runaway slaves Maroons. This meant ‘stray cattle’ in Portuguese. Descendants of escaped Africans, who fled life as an enslaved people, are also called Maroons. They formed

Convergidos
“Comoquiera que hayamos convergido aquí, a su tierra estamos apegados” dice una línea del himno nacional. Lo de “convergir aquí” constituye el punto de partida de la historia de Surinam. tribes which can still be found in the interior such as Aucaners (Ndyuka), Saramakaners, Paramakaners, Kwinti, and Matawai. Their escape was the start of a long struggle against the oppression of the white race over the black people. Slavery was abolished in Suriname on July 1st, 1863. It was not the end of the oppression though, as the freed slaves were obliged to work on the plantations for 10 more years.

La primera colonización europea exitosa tuvo lugar en 1650 bajo el mando del inglés Francis Willoughby. historic buildings, mostly built from wood, are an exceptional example of the mingling of colonial architecture and construction techniques, and native South American materials. In the detailing, typically British and Dutch colonial architectural styles are visible. They all share the same principles: a rectangular shape, with a symmetrical layout and a high, rising roof. The front of the buildings are painted white, with green shutters, high red roofs, and brick sidewalks. The former Fort Zeelandia is an example of this, built during English rule. The inner-city of Paramaribo has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for the last twelve years. Must-sees are the home of the most talked-about slave owner, Suzanna Du Plessis and the Finance Tower. Du Plessis was known for her cruelty towards slaves. Stories about her were passed down orally from generation to generation. One widespread story is about a slave named

Everywhere in and around Paramaribo you can find restaurants and food stalls offering cuisine from every culture. There is literally something for everyone. This small country offers almost all the culinary world. It’s up to you to choose your culinary destination: from a Hindustani Roti, Javanese Bamie, Native fish soup ‘Peprewatra’, Creolebrown beans, Chinese dumplings, Brazilian Churrasco, to European pasta. Although this food has been adopted from other cultures, it is an absolute must. Would
you like to try some exotic dishes? Give Fladder, blood sausage, and meat sausage a try. These are made from the blood and guts of chicken, pork, and beef. The stalls that sell these snacks can be found on almost every street corner. Another strange dish is Babat, a soup of beef tripe. This Javanese dish is very exotic. The food is generally very spicy and hot. Pepper is often served alongside the food, so the choice to try it is yours. Tip: Never underestimate Surinamese pepper. Eating is not just enjoyable for the Surinamese but also an important matter and they appreciate being complimented on it. In almost every Surinamese home, a warm cooked meal is served for lunch, and some have a warm meal again for dinner. Many Surinamese also have the habit of eating bread in the evening, but they will combine it Surinamese Roti: curry stew (from potatoes and a meat such as chicken) together within a Dhalpuri roti and boiled egg

with the most delicious toppings that you can imagine. The food’s preparation (some of which can be quite critical and fanatical), its serving, the social get-together, and eating together are typical of what is known in Suriname as a real fatu. Great fun!
First words SrananTongo
Unique to Suriname is its language –SrananTongo, or Sranan for short. Through slavery different African tribes came to Suriname, all of whom spoke their own language, which caused difficulty in understanding each other. So from the start of slavery in Suriname, a pidgin was born - a simplified, spontaneous language used for communication between all groups. This is the origin of Sranan Tongo, a language that has borrowed words from various other languages and blended them into a whole new language. Due to the influence of the English colonists, English is recognizable in Sranan to this day. The language was also influenced by various African languages, Por-

Primeras palabras en sranan tongo
Algo único de Surinam es su idioma, el sranan tongo, o simplemente “sranan”. Por medio de la esclavitud llegaron diferentes tribus africanas, cada una de las cuales hablaba su propio idioma, lo cual hacía difícil entenderse. Because these settlers considered Dutch a “higher” language, it is still the mandatory language in education. From the mid-twentieth century, however, Sranan became more and more the Surinamese language of choice. An official written form was established and many Surinamese became proud of their language. It’s nice to hear foreigners speak Sranan. Informally addressing someone with Fawaka? (How are you?), is a good starting point for a pleasant conversation. There is much more to Suriname. When you have seen enough of Paramaribo it is time to look up other places in the country where you can find inner peace. There is a reason why Suriname is known as ‘the beating heart of the Amazon’. A simple bus ride will take you to different parts of the pristine interior, from where you can travel up the river in a canoe, passing several Maroon and Amerindian villages. You could go on your own, but it’s nice to have a tour guide. These tours, which last a couple of hours, allow you to temporarily forget the daily grind, soothe your soul and are especially relaxing. The smell of nature is overwhelming. Take a dip in the brown river water or in the cool black creek water. Engage in a conversation with the Maroons and Amerindians. In 2011 Annette Bijman opened a small gallery in Paramaribo, Suriname. De KuS, short for Design and Kunst (Dutch for Art) from Suriname, soon became a household word and an important intermediary between Surinamese designers and their buyers. And as De KuS grows, so do the Surinamese designers. On 1 October 2014 De KuS will move to a bigger building in Paramaribo and in early 2015 De KuS will travel through the Caribbean, starting in Curaçao. by Alan Tijseling

ends when we keep the place open until late at night. These theme weekends have become real happenings.” The gallery not only showcases the work of various designers, but also provides designers with marketing skills and helps to optimize their production process. One example is the unique tables designed by visual artist Ken Doorson within the scope of his “Space is the Place” project. Ken has given the concept of space a whole new definition. Rather than delineatingspace he removes the demarcations, making the space created a place in itself. The tables he designs illustrate this. The legs are angled asymmetrically to create space for a chair where a table leg used to be in the way.

signed by the famous fashion designer Sonia Noel and furniture made from lianas from the Amazon rainforest by Liane Cane, also from Guyana. By moving to a larger building on 1 October, De KuS will be able to increase the range of products and provide space for even more designers and larger designs, like unique garden furniture made of wood that was submerged for forty years in the Suriname storage reservoir, large hammock standards with even larger hammocks, and huge sculptures carved out of wood. Parallel to the move, De KuS wants to become the platform for designers from the Caribbean region. At the beginning of 2015 the initial impetus to realize this ambition will be given by means of an exhibition -actually more like a trade mark show- in Curaçao.

A unique idea, but uniqueness costs money. Making tables with asymmetrical legs is a matter of mathematics and requires much accuracy in the production process, especially since the table must be stable like any normal table. De KuS acted as an intermediary between Ken and the Surinamese furniture factory Sewa, which has the know-how and means to realize “Space is the Place”. De KuS also provided the

resources for the expensive “sublistyle” glass plate table tops. Sublistyle is a trade mark for a unique printing procedure of full color images on glass. Doorson’s table shows a detail print of his paintings. The paintings can be bought together with the table, but both pieces are individual works of art in themselves. It goes without saying that Doorson’s tables are for sale at De KuS. “The project with Ken is a blueprint for the way we want to work with Surinamese designers”, says Annette. “We want to be a sounding board for the original idea and bring the parties together in order to realize their plans.” Of course that is not the case with everyone. Designers of handmade jewelry for example, are often individualistic and take care of their own production. They just bring their work to De KuS, then we have a nice cup of tea together and when their products are sold we call them.”
The Region
For some years now tourism in Suriname has been on the rise. The traditional family visits from The Netherlands are outnumbered by visitors from the region, in particular the neighboring countries of French Guiana and the Netherlands Antilles. It is no wonder that these tourists also visit De KuS, sometimes even bringing their own designs with them. Now the gallery also showcases clothing de-
Curaçao is an island known for its many historical country houses -landmarks for anyone who drives across the island. Many of these country houses are now being used as meeting halls or restaurants. The country house of Santa Martha was fully renovated between 2012 and 2014 and is now used as a boutique hotel, beautifully situated on a hill in the picturesque little town of Soto, near Westpunt. The terrace and rooms provide a magnificent view of the Santa Martha Bay. This characteristic, charming hotel provides an excellent décor to showcase Surinamese design on this Antillean island and offers good facilities to get connected with local designers. De KuS goes Caribbean has a twofold character. On the one hand, the objective is to give greater publicity to Surinamese designs within the region, while at the same time the plan is to bring back works from Caribbean designers to give them more exposure in Suriname. Ultimately De KuS wants to be a regional platform where designers from the Caribbean, Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname can meet each other and get advice on product development, sales and marketing, but most of all, De KuS wants to be an international promoter of all original and beautiful designs that are made in these countries. The Van Blommenstein (Brokopondo) reservoir is 1560 km2 of submersed area, located at the foot of Brownsberg and surrounded by other mountains. This area was flooded in the 1960s to provide thrust to the dam, so that energy could be generated to produce aluminum from bauxite processing. Today, this generated energy is used by a large part of Paramaribo. Take a surrealistic excursion between the treetops above the water, the extensive starry skies, and breathtaking nature. The surrounding forest provides a home for the surrounding Maroon villages, that mostly live according to ancient traditions. When visiting Paradise Island the most important activities are relaxing (in a hammock), swimming in the clear water, sunbathing and/or fishing Toekoenari (a type of bass) and the famous piranhas. During the walk, you have a great opportunity to see parrots, forest pigs, squirrels, gold hares and many other species of animals in their natural environment. En route, the guide and locals will explain the variety of plants species and their medicinal usage. Included on this tour is a walk to Witiekreek or a visit of the old gold mine. We will also visit several Maroon villages in the area. During this walk you will receive detailed explanation given by the guide on the surrounding flora, fauna and culture of the Maroons. During this 4 day jungle tour in the surroundings of the Nassaugebergte (Nassau Mountains) in the eastern part of Suriname all this and more is included. The district of Marowijne, situated in the eastern part of Suriname, is separated from French Guiana by the Marowijne River. Sipaliwini is situated to the south of this district, the largest district of Suriname. The Nassau Mountains and Maroon village LokaLoka can be found in this district. This part of Suriname is quite unknown to tourists but none the less beautiful. The area is not densely populated, the river is wide, the rapids are fierce, and the jungle in many places is untouched. During an expedition of scientists in 2011 to Nassau Mountain, approximately 20 different new species were discovered, including the Harlequin Frog. Jungle camp ManjaTabiki (=Mango Island) offers several types of accommodation. You can choose to sleep in a hammock at hammock camp, in a bed in the group accommodation, or in a private lodge which offers a beautiful view on the Marowijne River. The deck alongside the Marowijne River can be used to enjoy breakfast or do exercises in the morning, but is also a great spot to relax at the end of the day with a cold Parbo beer. Discover the authentic African culture during a visit to the Maroon village LokaLoka and relax afterwards in the Sisibisula (rapids). The highlight of this tour is a visit to the Minafalls. Deportes acuáticos

Up until 1975, water-sport services were exclusively available to guests staying at two of the island’s hotels. De Palm Tours changed that landscape by establishing a water sport division offering sailing, snorkeling, and scuba excursions, making the activity user-friendly to all tourists and Aruban residents. Another milestone was reached in 1988, when De Palm Tours developed De Palm Island, which serves as a recreational and entertainment center for individuals, as well as groups.
Vacation planning
Over the years, De Palm Tours evolved into the only company on the island that specializes in vacation planning, as its main focus. The company operates 25 sales desks located in the lobbies of most island hotels, as well as a sales center in the heart of Palm Beach at the De Palm Pier.
With more than 25 years of experience, the De Palm Tours’ Destination Management Services, the DMS division, supports corporate clients by designing and executing unique and unforgettable group programs and events.
Submarines
In February of 2011 De Palm Tours acquired Atlantis Submarines Aruba, further diversifying its underwater tour product-line which already included SeaTrek, the underwater helmet walk on De Palm Island.
Further developments
Today members of the Malmberg family are board members and strategic planners and are no longer managing the daily operations of the company. Instead they have transitioned that part of the business to a professional management team, and as board members plot the course for further developments. CuraSur 2014: Still communicating with the angisa/ lensu di kabes Pin by pin, participants in the workshop “Tay Angisa/Mara Lensu” in Curaçao meticulously make their angisa or lensu di kabes (headscarf or kerchief). The workshop is an initiative of NAKS (Organization for community work) in Suriname. The main objective of NAKS has been the preservation and further development of this shared cultural trait. The development of the angisa goes back to the 19th century and gradually it became an important attire of the Suriname Creoles. It is believed to be of African origin. Enslaved Africans, who were taken to the Americas, brought their traditional clothing styles with them.
Instrument to communicate
Angisas were folded or tied in such a way to become instruments of sign language for communication. Women used them to convey messages to their enemies or to someone they had their eyes on. Signs like ‘let them talk’, ‘wait for me at the corner’ or ‘f... you or kiss my ...’ are just a few examples. Extraordinary folds honored women deserving of recognition for outstanding achievements. In Curaçao, the lensu di kabes almost went out of style due to modern hair straightening and relaxing techniques. This fascinating

African tradition would communicate a woman’s story; indicate her social class and marital status in the 19th and 20th centuries. Nowadays lensu di kabes are used to cover up hair curlers in public, worn in folklore groups, during the annual Séu (Harvest) Festival and Siman di Kultura. In Suriname the angisa is worn on national holidays and during traditional festivities.
A bridge between cultures
This cultural heritage and its development by the diaspora are the reasons why NAKS, the oldest and largest cultural organization of Suriname, started CuraSur 2014. The main objective was to build a bridge between the cultures of Suriname and Curaçao with the angisa/lensu di kabes as a mutual binder. In the past two centuries, people have become one with these headscarves and even created new ones more representative of the present times.
‘Karisma’
With workshops in the first week of June in Curaçao, NAKS wanted designers to seek inspiration to create yet another lensu di kabes. As a result, ‘Karisma’ was created. This new angisa is made from colorful fabric and is a reflection of the beautiful beaches of Curaçao and waves washed upon the sun-drenched shores. It also demonstrates the relaxing nature, which can be found in both Curaçao and Suriname. Karisma is an expression of joy and pleasure and an expression of existence of which Ms. Zachrah Marselia of Curaçao is the creator. And now, with the compliments of Insel Air who made this exchange possible a new angisa/lensu di kabes has been added to the dozens already in existence. So be on the lookout for it at the next cultural presentation whether in Suriname or Curaçao. You might see the one that brings these two nations together.

How old is the Earth? For starters, here is a mysterious fact. Nobody actually knows how old the Earth is. According to scientists, the Nuvvuagittuq Belt on the coast of the Hudson Bay in Northern Quebec is estimated to be 4.28 billion years old. This may be the oldest known rock on Earth. Another fact is that the Earth’s floor, the so-called OceanFloor Depths, is practically the same landscape as what we see above water, with its mountains, ridges and volcanoes.

From the serenity of a walk through the green and vivid rainforests, consider the feeling of freedom standing high above sea level on the highest peaks of the Earth. Scientists estimate that one eighth of the world’s population lives in mountainous zones and that these mountains cover a quarter of the world’s surface.
