Mike Granger, President of the St. Maarten Carnival Foundation says: ‘We’re introducing a “Season Pass” for the upcoming carnival celebrations. This pass allows holders to experience 16 local and international concerts and shows for a low price. The benefits of a pass are that it saves you money, avoids long lines and grants you access to every show in the 2015 Carnival Village from April 16th to May 4th. Twin-nation island
St. Maarten/St. Martin is a twin-nation island nestled in the North Eastern Caribbean. Known as the Friendly Island, it is strategically situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The northern portion of the island is the Collectivité of Saint Martin. The
capital city Marigot is a former French colony. It has approximately 30,000 inhabitants who speak predominantly French, but also English. In the south is St. Maarten with its capital city Philipsburg and a population of around 50,000 inhabitants. St. Maarten gained autonomy on October 10, 2010 and now constitutes one of four countries under the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The weather on the island is mostly sunny, with occasional showers.
Maho Beach
St. Maarten has one of the most bustling airports in the Caribbean. Princess Juliana International Airport, PJIA, serves as a regional transportation hub, making it an easily accessible destination. Be wowed on arrival watching the airplane touch down just over the beautiful Maho Beach where people gather to watch arriving or departing planes. For fans of aviation and thrill seekers, the Maho beach experience is a destination in itself!
Travel is also possible by sea aboard one of the many cruise ships that line the harbor. Once you disembark, an abundance of activities await. Visitors enjoy shopping, island tours, and a wide variety of water sports. Of course, there is nothing like lounging on one of the 33 natural white sand beaches and gazing out at the beautiful turquoise sea. Famous for its world class cuisine, the island offers plenty to tempt any palate. The nightlife includes casinos, clubbing or beach parties with laid back jamming to island tunes. The variety of languages spoken by the locals and residents include English, Dutch, Spanish, French, and Creole. This makes moving around very easy. All these things combine to make St. Maarten/ St. Martin despite being the smallest island in the Caribbean, unparalleled in its diversity of cultures, languages, economic vibrancy, leisure opportunities, entertainment, cuisine, and sports activities.

"Come and Carnival in Sint Maarten. For the last two weeks of April, Philipsburg will be transformed by the biggest cultural event on the annual calendar of activities. Themed: ‘Come experience life’ at the 46th Annual Carnival, the largest in the Eastern Caribbean from April 16 – May 4, will feature the best colourful parades, the best pageants, musical performances, the best food and much more. Come celebrate with us, vacation with us this April, and be a part of Carnival 2015". Mrs. Rita Bourne - Gumbs The Honorable Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports
Carnival
Carnival time is really like no other. The friendly island people can be seen making vast preparations of food. Local favorites ranging from the traditional Johnny cakes, BBQ ribs, grilled chicken, and funchi, to international delicacies from Europe, India, Asia, Peru, the Middle East, and Africa. This year 78 food booths have already signed up to make your taste buds sing. Our 37 square miles of land mass definitely have the widest spread of fun activities that you can enjoy around this time. St. Maarten Carnival is special for many reasons - the festive atmosphere, the ambience of a rich multicultural heritage, the feeling of that melting pot of cultures all interwoven in the sway of the people’s walk, the happy smiles on their faces, the deliberate rendition of the folkloric history, the sewing of Carnival costumes, writing songs, preparing food, arts, crafts, and local literature all in readiness for the big celebration. Grand parade
Another highlight is the making of ‘Calypso’ theme songs. These are satirical and politically charged renditions where the Calypsonians compete for the title of Calypso King or Queen, a contest that draws hundreds of musicians and dancers from neighboring islands. This music is the
backdrop of the Jouvert jump up, a street party to die for. It kicks off at 4:00am and proceeds counter clockwise around the Great Salt Pond until 12 noon. For the grand parade, the wildly colorful troupes gather at St. John’s road at 9:30am. The parade takes off at 10:00am meandering through the Grande Marché Roundabout down Bush Road, across Long Wall Road up to Front Street. From Front Street around 3:00pm, the beat picks up as the revelers on both sides of the road join the troupes in the jubilation. The gyrations peak as the dancers pass by the historic Court House, Old Street and unto Vineyard Road. The final leg passes through the Freedom Fighter’s Roundabout, unto Walter Nisbeth Road and takes a final turn at the Salt Pickers Roundabout into Carnival Village. Carnival Village sits on the edge of Philipsburg and is constructed solely as the meeting point of cultures. playa con improvisaciones musicales relajantes sobre melodías isleñas.

On this day, the African-Surinamese will celebrate the 152nd anniversary of the emancipation of slavery. In 1863, a small group of 33,000 African-Surinamese slaves were set free under the condition that they work ten more years on the plantations. Thankful for the ending of a very dark period in their lives, these ex-slaves celebrated for three days with church ceremonies, parades and parties. Now this day is celebrated as a national holiday and an extravaganza that people from all backgrounds participate in. Everyone comes together in the city center to feast and celebrate. The locals call it Keti Koti, meaning broken chains, in Sranan Tongo, a mostly English based Creole language widely spoken in Suriname.
Treasure
Unique to this holiday is the cultural fashion show. The Koto is the name for a garment that was designed by female slaves. It’s a

‘Dance to the beat of the drums’ cherished treasure of the Creole culturebut it wasn’t always this way. Until the emergence of the Koto, the curves of female slaves caused a lot of jealousy by the planters’ wives. They wanted female slaves to stop walking around bare-breasted. In 1879, the government declared that public morality should be promoted by law. It declared that Afro-Surinamese women would, from that point on be properly dressed. This law was welcomed because for the first time ex-slaves could decide for themselves what to wear. It also gave women new-found confidence. They created something to characterize
themselves; something typically Creole. Influenced by the fashion of English, French and Dutch women, a custom designs were created, for example, the Dutch ‘jacket’, renamed ‘yaki’ of the Koto. The extension to the back of the skirt was adopted from the French queue. The Koto is a garment with a chic radiance, in which a lot of women parade through town on Emancipation Day.

about and experience the amazing cuisine of African-Surinamese and other cultures. You can either choose a modern style of cooking or experience traditional food that was cooked during the slavery period. Try the anitrie berie, a rice mix with salty fish, for example. This recipe was created during the slavery period because slaves didn’t have a lot of ingredients to cook with. Or try the rice with tasty chicken and oven baked pom (a yellow, gooey, grated root baked into a cake with a mix of spices, chicken and sauce). This dish was originally introduced by the Jew’s and reclaimed by the African-Surinamese. When you’re done eating, make sure to dance to the beat of the Kaseko or Kawina drums. This genre of music is typical of the Creole population. The beat is addictive. Whether you understand the words of the songs or not, it’s difficult to stand still. The harmony and pleasure amongst the feasting people is a lot of fun. Come and enjoy the emancipation extravaganza in amazing Suriname!

FORAGING ARUBA When I first met Frank Kelly, we were at a party. I was waiting in line for his homemade iced tea. After Kelly poured my drink, he grabbed a pinch of petals foraged earlier that day and sprinkled them into the cup, watching them fall and settle into the tea, observing with the care of a scientist who was creating a dangerous amalgam. “I just do this for the parties, Kelly said, as if this tea enhancer was amateurish. He offered to take me foraging the next morning, promising a big-league day of seaweed and cacti; flower petals and buds. And he apologized in advance, multiple times, for the state of his car. That philosophy would guide us throughout our day’s culinary adventure. Kelly stopped beside the turquoise water and we snacked on foods he had prepared from yesterday’s harvest, like spongy cactus croquettes and marmalade, which he had made gelatinous by dehydrating seaweed and turning it into a pectin-like powder. “This is tea.” Kelly presented the floral equivalent of Russian nesting dolls. He had wrapped a small, pink minty flower inside moringa’s peppery petals and enveloped the pair in toronjil’s citrusy corolla. Dehydrated, yet still-purple frangipani petals served as the natural tea bag.
Frank Kelly and I piled into his car through the passenger door. “My front door doesn’t open,” Kelly shrugged, his happy eyes squinting shut behind thickframed glasses. Kelly drove to Aruba’s northern point, away from the hotels, where the palm forest once stood and where Kelly’s grandparents had taught him to forage. Once in the north, sky-scraping cacti towered over us, dive-bombing pelicans plunged into the ocean, kamikaze lizards sprinted for our tires. “We have a lot of seaweed,” Kelly explained. “But in our culinary history, we have no recipes with seaweed. I ask myself why? So I come out here to find seaweed that we can add to our dishes. Most of the time it’s trial and error. You put some stuff in your mouth and try it.”

red sea lettuce, and red tinted seaweed called dulse
In the Spotlight En el Punto de Mira
When breakfast was done, Kelly took off his shirt, exposing a tattooed menagerie of bees with cartoon smiles and sparrows fluttering across his pudgy torso, and swapped slippers for torn skateboarding shoes. Then he ran across razor-sharp coral like a steady mountain goat. By the time I made it halfway, he was back with his bounty. “I eat all of this,” he said, spilling a mollusk, red sea lettuce, and red-tinted seaweed called dulse into my hands, as if he were expecting me to gobble down the medley then and there. I tried the dulse, which tasted like most flora submerged for a lifetime in salt. “I blanch the dulse and use it for chimichurri (Argentinian
sauce), Kelly said. Normally, I can get enough mollusks for two bowls of soup in four hours.” We climbed into the car through the passenger door again and drove past endless cacti. Kelly called out the myriad names of the cacti in the way Inuits differentiated types of snow. Suddenly, Kelly swerved off the road and pulled himself through the driver’s side window as if he were escaping hornets that got loose in the car. I watched him leapt up a tree. When he returned to earth, Kelly leaned through the window with a beautiful orange flower with wide-spaced petals. “Flamboyan, he said, great for salads. The pollen is like turmeric.”
I munched on the citrusflavored petals. “This is great.” “The buds are better. I love snatch them.” The bud, however, turned my mouth fuzzy. I had forgotten that I was slightly allergic to some fruits, which meant that the same was probably true of buds and flowers. But I experienced nothing worse than a tingle. Kelly, however, took greater risks. “I ate a red berry once with heart-shaped leaves,” he said. “Man, I was sick. But I don’t worry about it. There are many poisonous plants that I’ve eaten and nothing ever happened.” However, his foraging was not guided by chance alone. Much of the flora on the island has been documented and their purposes recorded. In fact, Kelly’s grandmother authored such a book. But in the past few years, Kelly has made discoveries that upend old-school beliefs. For example, according to island lore, a plant that Kelly calls koko rabana had always been used in abortions. But he discovered that koko rabana had a different purpose: It works as a blood purifier. “The elders would get mad and say to me, ‘Do you know what you are talking about?’ This is because I’m changing how people think. Look, some people put a tea leaf under their pillow to rid themselves of a fever. I like the myths, but I have to be realistic.” But contending with culture is not as difficult for him as dealing with Aruba’s overdevelopment and the destruction of overlooked resources. ”I love my island, but my people don’t embrace our culture because there’s nothing to embrace. Instead of looking outside, we need to look inside. We can’t just think we have tourism to offer. We have so much more. InselAir Reaching Higher

How come we don’t cook with cacti?” As soon as he stopped talking, Frank Kelly launched himself out of the car from the open window again. “I eat all of this,” shoshoro. “It soothes skin irritations” (it tasted like passion fruit). Kelly’s self-defenestration continued, and each time it ended with a flower and a smile. “People don’t think that we have good food here, but we have everything that we need.”

Elements BONAIRE & ST.MAARTEN
Hand made on Bonaire
OUR STORY My husband, an Italian and I, a South-African came to live on Bonaire in February 2011. We met on the Queen Mary 2 where we were both working at the time. We discovered Bonaire while working on ships and immediately fell in love with the island. I started my little dichroic glass business selling my jewelry at the market stand. I found myself working day and night to keep up with the demand ...and so we decided to expand our team. OUR TEAM Since then we have added to our Elements family, Sergio & Marilena, my brother and sister in law from Italy, my Mum, who was the one that taught me this form of art, as well as Grace and Rob, our friends from cruise ships who are now running our St.Maarten stores (One on Front Street and the other on Old Street). We also have a few good friends that lend a hand on busy days. OUR FUTURE Our dream is to expand our business globally and to eventually turn this art form into a local craft, where we teach people how to create this unique Glass. Watch this space... OUR PRODUCT Dichroic glass consists of multiple layers of metals which are vaporized in a vacuum chamber and electro beamed onto the glass. The glass is then cut into various shapes, layered together and then fused at almost 1500ËšF for around 9-12 hours. With different lighting and when set against your skin, you will be amazed at the brilliance and shine the dichroic glass gives off. We offer a high quality product as we only use stainless steel which is hypoallergenic and does not tarnish. Our jewelry is affordable, ranging in price from $15-$55. As we make everything ourselves, we are also able to take custom orders, or if you have any special requests we are happy to help. Check out one of our boutiques or our website, and be enchanted by a world of color.

Visit Guyana
the unspoilt gem of
South America
There is a reason Guyana is known as the best-kept secret of South America. Whether you visit the bustling capital of Georgetown or explore Guyana’s many miles of densely-grown jungle, this unspoiled gem is bound to have many pleasant surprises in store. BY FIONA VAN KAMPEN

In the Spotlight En el Punto de Mira
From a long weekend getaway to an action-packed jungle trek of several weeks, Guyana is a destination to attract a wide range of visitors. The only South American country to have English as its official language, Guyana is steeped in history and culture. Colonised by the Spanish, French, Dutch and most recently, the English, Guyana has historically attracted settlers from many different ethnicities.
Canoeing at Arrowpoint
From food to architecture
This has made the country into a true melting pot, which can be seen in every aspect, from its food to its architecture. A walk through Georgetown reflects the varied culture. The architecture consists of a mixture of colonial style buildings and wooden Caribbean style structures, mingling with mosques and Indian temples on the outskirts.

A large number of old wooden buildings are still in existence. Visit St. George’s Cathedral, the tallest wooden building in the world, which inside has a feel of grandeur and enormity. The City Hall, a popular landmark which resembles a haunted house, was built in the same style.
Architecture
The Parliament building is the complete opposite in building style; a statuesque colonial building, completed in 1834 as the result of a design competition. Georgetown also boasts a lighthouse - a 103 foot high structure. Climb the 183 steps to reach a small gallery at the top, with stunning views. Other places of interest are the red colonial house which was once the residence of popular premier Cheddi Jagan; the High Court

and the “Umana Yana,” a meeting place in a traditional round structure built by the Wai Wai, one of Guyana’s nine indigenous tribes, or one of Georgetown’s variety of museums. The city also offers a variety of shops.

A trip to Georgetown is not complete without a visit to Stabroek market, Guyana’s largest market which offers a spectacular range of colours, smells and sights. Try some of the fresh fruits or have a walk through the fresh fish section where impressive sea creatures are offered for sale.

The Botanical Garden and Georgetown’s small zoo provide a leisurely walk in the late afternoon. Read the touching story of two rescued puma cubs, and see the incredible

Adventures everywhere
There are many opportunities for jungle tours in Guyana. From a leisurely boat ride to the Arawak tribe in Santa’s mission, where you can meet the Amerindians and buy handcrafted souvenirs, followed by canoeing, cycling, relaxing and swimming at the eco-resort of Arrowpoint, to an adventurous ride in a small plane to Guyana’s pride and largest tourist attraction; the Kaieteur Falls. Jungle tours can be undertaken as day trips from Georgetown or as tailor-made long expeditions. Arrowpoint, a privately owned resort run by Arawak Indians, also offers the opportunity to stay overnight in jungle huts. It offers

hikes for visitors of all ages, with guides who have interesting stories to tell, and who point out wildlife, including alligators during a special nighttime trek. A number of local tour operators provide the famous Kaieteur tours, which can be booked up days in advance. Flying from Ogle Airport on the edge of Georgetown, a small aircraft takes groups of five to 13 people into the dense jungle in around an hour. Bring a camera as the aircraft fly low, affording spectacular jungle views. After arrival at the Kaieteur National Park, a qualified guide will take you on a trek through the jungle, pointing out rare plants and helping you look to discover the cute but poisonous golden frog, only an inch tall. If you are lucky, you may see the rare cock of the rock, the bright orange national bird of Guyana.

If you listen carefully, the sound of water will greet you before you see the actual fall. Nothing will prepare you for the spectacular view of the majestic falls, named after the Indian chief Kai, who sacrificed his own life by steering his canoe down the fall, to avert a war. Three viewpoints will give you plenty of opportunity to come up close to this miracle of nature, and time to take photographs. After a leisurely trek back, your pilot will fly you back to Georgetown. If you ask, you may be allowed to sit in the co-pilot seat. With its friendly people, its mix of cultures and its variety of city life and natural beauty, Guyana is a destination that will remain in your heart forever! Kaieteur Falls Puma in the Zoo

Book review Reseña del Libro
Both for knowledgeable readers and for those curious to learn more, recent books of both fiction and non-fiction continue to provide a powerful medium to connect to the Caribbean world… 4 Caribbean Books: New Fiction and Non-Fiction of Our Region. BY HAL PEAT Goldeneye: Where Bond Was Born: Ian Fleming's Jamaica (Pegasus Books) – Matthew Parker
Masterpieces of Haitian Art (Schiffer Publishing, Ltd.) – Candice Russell
As Flies to Whatless Boys (Akashic books) – Robert Antoni
While Ian Fleming himself is central to this book, the wider story of the island where he wrote his Bond thrillers and the changes unfolding in the post-war years as Britain’s long colonial era began to wane also play their role in understanding Fleming’s creative imagination and how this was reflected at times in the Bond character and story line.
Images and depictions of Haitian daily life, ritual and history are all captured for the wider world in the pages of this expansive book. Masterpieces of Haitian Art through its extensive presentation of the diverse formats of Haitian artists makes them accessible to any reader.
Colonial migration to the British West Indies often followed a predictable pattern from the mother country to distant islands. In As Flies to Whatless Boys, Robert Antoni describes one family’s journey, based partly on his own family’s history on Trinidad, but which involves far more unusual circumstances and events.
In Goldeneye: Where Bond Was Born: Ian Fleming's Jamaica, author Matthew Parker delivers a vivid and insightful account of both Ian Fleming's writing years on Jamaica into Sixties and his interactions with figures from the worlds of politics, cinema and literature along with the island he came to know and love in his fashion. Beneath the cool bravado of the exterior of James Bond, Parker also examines those indications in the Bond novels and characters that reflect the uncertainties of a future without the old imperial guideposts.

With entire sections that cover everything from painting and sculptures to papier-maché and brilliant voodoo flags, this account by author Candice Russell is a multi-dimensional exploration of the finest examples in each medium of Haitian art over the past seven decades. There is much to absorb from the diverse Haitian artistic schools, such as the depiction of ordinary life in the Cap-Haitien style, and the mysterious and haunting images that make Saint Soleil so engaging. This collage of work by masters such as Hector Hyppolite and younger, emerging artists demonstrates the underlying aesthetic connection between past, present and future generations of Haitian artist.
The narrative ingredients that brings alive this journey into the unknown begins in mid-nineteenth century London, when the Tucker family decide to follow engineer John Adolphus Etzler on his mission to found a utopian community. Their trans-Atlantic voyage and the tragic events they face in the Caribbean are largely narrated by their teenage son, Willy, decades later as he recalls the girl he fell in love with along the way, and the calamities that came on Trinidad’s distant coastline. The novel is a gripping account of love, loss and transformation, and the values that sustain us in surviving adversity.
Book review Reseña del Libro Caribbean Potluck: Modern Recipes from Our Family Kitchen (Kyle Books) – Suzanne Rousseau and Michelle Rousseau The journey through contemporary and traditional Caribbean cuisine also happens in the wider context of Caribbean culture for sisters and co-authors Suzanne Rousseau and Michelle Rousseau. This awareness and connection makes Caribbean Potluck: Modern Recipes from Our Family Kitchen an even more enriching read, providing an insightful account of island living in which food has always been a
45
central and connecting element. Drawing on times spent on Jamaica and Trinidad, the authors explore how the flavors, tastes, and food memories of their childhood helped to shape and inspire them into as cooks – both professionally and at home. While acknowledging the region’s traditional dishes, the foods they present here are their contemporary approach to many island classics. Culinary careers that span restaurant operation, a catering business, as well as their international travels, have all equipped them with a more modern approach to Caribbean food. A book for the kitchen – and every room where you may read.

Lee’s Korean Restaurant A well-known name in the Surinamese restaurant sector and to Koreans themselves. This Korean restaurant, established in 1982, was at that time situated at the Cornelis Jongbawstraat. In 1992, we moved to the Mahonylaan where to this day we serve you the most tasty and traditional fish- and meat dishes. Besides these typical Korean recipes, where fish dishes are our specialty, we also prepare Korean meat dishes and creative variations with a Surinamese flavor.
