EDITOR’S COMMENT
The clock continues to tick Amid the pandemic we must not forget that the Brexit deadline is getting closer While we have seen the headlines of recent weeks dominated by exam grade U-turns and rows about pupils returning to school, one thing that hasn’t changed is the deadline for securing a Brexit deal. Depending on which media voice you read or listen to, it’s the Government’s fault for being so intransigent or its the EU’s for the same reason, or a bit more one than the other. So little progress has been made that the EU has taken it off the agenda of the latest summit: there would be nothing new to discuss. But the 31 December end of transition date isn’t going away. Leaving with no deal and switching to WTO terms would cause enough of an economic shock at the best of times, but on top of the pandemic the impact is almost unthinkable. But it is something that we have to think about. The Prime Minister has amply demonstrated his like of brinkmanship, but now is not the time for bravado and rhetoric, it is the time for action. The latest update from DFS shows plenty of consumer demand, but if lead times cannot come down, will shoppers look to spend their money on items they can get in less than two months? Well done to the National Bed Federation for deciding that the Bed Industry Awards don’t need an exhibition or gala dinner to take place. If you sell or make beds you really should be entering these awards, so go online and get your entry started: the deadline of 16 October may seem a long way off, but given the extra concerns involved in running a business at the moment it’s never too early to start. Another month goes by and another exhibition (remember them?) is forced to abandon 2020: in this case, the Brussels Furniture Fair. The show always attracts a goodly number of UK retailers, so unfortunately one more buying option has been removed for them. On a more positive note, Long Point, the London Design Festival, 3 Days of Design (in Copenhagen) and Milano Design City are still scheduled to take place this month.

CBIL for United United Carpets has secured a £2m loan, more than doubling its cash position. The group has used the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan scheme to boost its funds. As of 31 March it had £1.45m cash. ‘During the lockdown period, we first stabilised the group, ensuring the safety of employees, and then ensured the financial security of the business utilising the support offered by the Government. ‘Subsequently, we have used the time while stores were closed to review the ongoing costs of the business and, as a result, we have identified significant annual cost savings, which are expected to translate into a substantial improvement in operating margin going forward,’ said Peter Cowgill, United Carpets chairman, prior to the loan.
Sofas & Stuff expands Upholstery chain Sofas & Stuff has continued its expansion. Its thirteenth branch opened in Knutsford, Cheshire on 15 August and the fourteenth in Mere Green, Birmingham on 22 August. The 2,493sqft Knutsford store has more than 30 models on display while the 2,877sqft Mere Green branch has more than 20 sofas. Former Sofa Workshop founder Andrew Cussins launched the chain in September 2009 at what is now its flagship store and head office in Fittleworth, West Sussex. The upholstery is made at the company’s factories in Preston and Nottingham.

DFS orders ‘significantly ahead of expectations’ DFS has seen orders ‘significantly ahead of expectations’ but has warned that the momentum may not last. The group says orders in-store and online in the past six weeks have been about £70m. ‘This trading is significantly ahead of our initial expectations and is in addition to our previously announced strong opening order book that will generate a further in-year revenue benefit of c£100m. ‘We believe that this trading performance reflects a combination of consumers currently spending more on their homes relative to other sectors, latent demand caused by the nationwide lockdown and also a strengthening advantage from our hybrid digital and physical retail offering, which is particularly relevant in this consumer environment.’ However, it cautions shareholders that it is unable to forecast beyond the short term. ‘The financial year has started strongly, however we do note significant uncertainty exists in UK consumer confidence related to COVID-19 and the potential impact of Brexit, and it is exceptionally difficult to assess the outlook beyond the short term. While positive trading momentum currently remains, we do note that some consumers may be bringing forward spending decisions and this may impact trading later in the financial year. ‘Notwithstanding these risks, recent trading and our current momentum does increase our earnings resilience and it has significantly strengthened our financial headroom,’ it says.
Another addition for Wren Wren Kitchens has taken another step towards 100 branches. The chain opened its 96th store, in Peterborough, on 14 August. The new showroom has 74 full-size kitchen displays, an appliance studio showcasing major appliance brands, and an interior design studio. ‘We’re delighted to be opening our doors today,’ says Alan Read, showroom manager. ‘Peterborough is a fantastic city, and we’re excited to be able to bring our years of design experience to the local area, helping customers design their dream kitchens.’ The chain’s 100th branch is expected to open in September.
New exhibitors for Long Point Next month’s Long Point will feature some new exhibitors. Taking part for the first time are Spink & Edgar Upholstery, Tetrad and The Art Group. The Long Eaton show will feature 20 exhibitors in total. While all showrooms have been made coronavirus compliant, visitors to Collins & Hayes, Duresta, John Sankey and Parker Knoll should make appointments to maintain social distancing. The 21-23 September event takes place across seven venues in the town. May’s edition of the show was cancelled because of the pandemic.

Topping leads Relyon purchase Bed manufacturer Relyon has been bought by investors headed by its former chief executive. The company went into administration alongside sister companies Harveys and Bensons for Beds, with Bensons being bought in a pre-pack administration. Ian Topping and other investors has purchased Relyon, its Wellington, Somerset factory and the intellectual property of the Relyon and Dunlopillo brands. ‘I am delighted to have been able to lead the acquisition of Relyon which is a great UK manufacturer with a 150-year history of making high quality beds in the West Country. Having formerly been chief executive of the Relyon Group from 1993 to 2010, I have real belief in the underlying strengths of Relyon and its people,’ says Topping. ‘As an independent business, I will be working closely with Alan Chapman, md, and his team as we focus on developing our excellent products and close customer relationships to grow the business significantly and with this create new jobs.’ The deal is expected to save the jobs of 280 employees: 82 were made redundant at the time of the administration.
Golf day raises £10,000 Barker and Stonehouse’s annual golf day has raised £10,000 for charities. Around 50 people from across the furnishing industry took part in the event on 12 August at the Catterick Garrison Golf Club in North Yorkshire, with the money split between The Furniture Makers’ Company and local NHS charities. ‘Barker and Stonehouse is proud to support The Furniture Maker’s Company, a charity that provides muchneeded support for those in the furnishing industry. We have been hosting the Barker and Stonehouse annual golf day in aid of this cause for many years and we were very happy to be able to continue this tradition this year but under slightly different socially distant compliant conditions,’ says James Barker, Barker and Stonehouse md.

John Lewis renting furniture in try-before-buy John Lewis has launched a business renting furniture to shoppers. A range of 50 products is on offer with rental periods ranging from three to 24 months. ‘Attitudes towards renting items and the sharing economy have dramatically shifted in recent years, and we know that renting, reselling items and recycling them is a growing priority for our customers,’ says Johnathan Marsh, John Lewis director of home. Marsh said the service was also a sustainable choice, with items collected and repaired at the end of each rental and sent to new customers. The items will be rented via
a third-party company, Fat Llama, with the service available initially in London but set to roll out nationally if the trial proves successful. Under the scheme shoppers can use the service to ‘try before they buy’, as payments stop if they reach the original purchase price before the end of the hire period, and they can keep the item or have it collected. After two 12-month rental periods the items will have been paid for outright. The products are insured for wear and tear but not accidental damage. Just hours after the scheme was launched Fat Llama reported many products out of stock.
Jarrold boss among almost a quarter of staff made redundant Norfolk department store chain Jarrold has made 90 of its staff redundant, including its chief executive. Minnie Moll joined the three-store chain two years ago. Jarrold celebrated its 250th anniversary earlier this year. Its main store in Norwich

along with branches in Cromer and Wymondham had employed 400 staff. ‘Minnie Moll has left the business following a restructure of our executive team brought about by the impact of the current COVID-19 crisis. ‘This is no reflection on the
outstanding contribution Minnie has made to the business and the leadership she has shown in her time at Jarrold. ‘We are very sad to see her go and she leaves with our sincere thanks and best wishes,’ says David Hill, Jarrold chairman.
On the road again Collections of waste vinyl flooring through the Recofloor take-back scheme have restarted. The full service was temporarily suspended in April due to the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, with a soft start of some collections from June to help support Recofloor members and manage the volumes of waste vinyl flooring. Collections can take between four to 10 working days after booking and are carried out by Polyflor and Altro during their deliveries as backhaul.

Keith Hislop 1927–2020 The death has been announced of former Gimson and Slater designer and chairman Keith Hislop. He was 93. Norman Keith Hislop (always known as Keith) was born in Holbrook, Derbyshire. He won a scholarship to study Maths at Selwyn College, Cambridge and having been an air cadet at school, he straightaway joined the University Air Squadron and took up his commission to train as a Spitfire pilot. In 1947 he married fellow Cambridge student Kay, his wife of 72 years. Having a young family, he felt that he needed a change of career and so studied at Nottingham College of Art, hoping to move into industrial design, while simultaneously joining the 504 Nottingham County Auxiliary Squadron flying Meteor jets as part of the defence against the
Russian threat during the Cold War. In parallel he was recruited by Gimson and Slater to take the company into the post-war design freedom after the restrictions of wartime Utility designs. He travelled widely and was inspired by Scandinavian design. Even his earliest work still has a very modern feel today. By 1957 his squadron’s role was taken over by ground-toair missile systems and this coincided with a main board directorship with Gimson and Slater, which led through design director to md to chairman by his retirement in 1992. The changes and challenges within Gimson and Slater ran side by side with interests in the wider furniture world, and saw him working on educational bodies and chairing advisory committees and research groups. He was a founder member of the Long Eaton Guild of Furniture Manufacturers.

New ambassador
TV presenter Stacey Solomon has become Bensons for Beds latest brand ambassador. The move is its first since the chain was bought by owner Alteri Investments in a pre-pack administration deal. ‘Stacey is one of the most popular personalities in Britain. She’s the perfect match for us and we’re thrilled to be working with her as we transform Bensons over the next few years,’ says Joe Wykes, Bensons coo.
Interiors etailer Cox & Cox has seen sales leap amid lockdown: sales rose by 59% in the past quarter after rising 75% in the first quarter. The increases were driven by increased sales in outdoor living and furniture. The largest uplifts were in desks, office chairs and shelf units as consumers shifted to creating more permanent home offices. In outdoor living, hanging chairs, both single and double, sold in record numbers. The company also saw profits rise by 4.6% and by 6% on budget. ‘This is a very strong set of results, and we have
Jeff Slator 1939–2020 The funeral of former Sheffield furniture retailer Jeff Slator took place on 17 August. He was 81 and was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2014 and died of pneumonia on 24 July. He moved from Bradford to Sheffield in 1968 to manage a furniture store before opening his own in 1972: Mr Slater’s. He retired in 2012. ‘When he first set up his

shop he had 12 mattresses and was told if he didn’t sell them he could return them. Because someone took a chance on him, he made sure he helped others out,’ says his daughter Rachael. ‘When former customers saw him out and about they’d smile and wave and often he was invited into their houses. There will be a lot of people sad to hear he is not with us.’

continued to grow share and improve customer performance throughout the quarter,’ says Richard Bell, Cox & Cox ceo. Sales peaked in May with an increase of 96%. Customer retention has increased 25% over the last quarter, while new customer acquisition has more than doubled. The increases have continued through the summer with sales 170% higher in August.
Brussels show cancelled The Brussels Furniture Fair, scheduled for 8-10 November, has been cancelled. ‘The course of the epidemic is unpredictable, and the health risk has become too great,’ says Lieven Van den Heede, general manager. ‘It is apparent that despite a great deal of enthusiasm for allowing the fair to go ahead, there is above all a huge sense of uncertainty. The next edition is therefore planned for 7-10 November 2021. We will use this pause to ensure that Brussels Furniture Fair 2021 is a truly festive edition.’
People Spring manufacturer Spinks has promoted Darren Marcangelo from commercial director to md and he joins the Harrison Spinks main board.
Adjustable bed base manufacturer Ergomotion has named Neil Robinson, former Sealy UK sales and marketing director as UK and Ireland sales manager. After 51 years in furniture retailing, John Findlay, Barker and Stonehouse salesman is to retire this summer. Findlay, who has most recently been based at the Newcastle store, began his career in furniture retailing in August 1969, joining Barker and Stonehouse in 1997, and was part of the team that opened the Newcastle branch.

Accuracy matters
Demand for estimating training is growing
Enrico Fermi was a nuclear physicist and was, in part, responsible for developing and testing the first nuclear explosions. If you read his bio on Wikipedia you’ll find that he was known for ‘his ability to make good approximate calculations with little or no actual data’. Isn’t that just another way of saying ‘guess’? And isn’t that a bit scary when you think what he was dealing with? In 1945, Fermi was present at the ‘Trinity Test’ in New Mexico where the first atomic bomb was tested. He was in a bunker about six miles from the explosion and when the wind from the explosion reached the spot he stood up with a handful of confetti and let it go. He then measured how far it travelled and from this calculated an estimate of the strength of the explosion by working out the wind speed, the force needed to move the air, the shape of the shockwave and how much power would be required to do this. His answer – 10 megatons wasn’t spot-on, but it was good enough to give his fellow scientists a better understanding of the forces they were dealing with. And it (with a few other
20
Interiors Monthly September 2020
bits and pieces, no doubt) earned him a Nobel Prize for Physics. Estimating in our trade is easy in comparison. We have, or can easily access, all the data we need. Whether we’re planning a fitted furniture installation, curtains, blinds or new flooring, the tools we need are readily available and accurate as long as we use them correctly. So why would there be a flurry of people wanting to be taught estimating on a two-day course, and what is there to teach? Estimating is not just about length, width and height. It’s about gathering all the information necessary to plan the job correctly and to avoid potential problems. Whether it’s moisture levels for flooring or the accessibility of existing water and electrical supplies for a kitchen, knowing these factors at the earliest opportunity helps to ensure the job is priced correctly, runs smoothly, and won’t have any hidden surprises popping up later. Estimating can get very complicated. There could be lots of measurements, lots of different products and a variety
of ways for ordering them. By the square metre? By cut length off a standard width of roll? As tiles or standard width of unit? At retail price or a multiple of cost price? A robust method of gathering, recording and processing the information ensures clarity as well as accuracy and completeness. (Be honest, have you ever had a customer say you missed a cupboard, or even a whole room, from the proposal?) Estimating is not just about you getting things right. It’s rare that only one person is involved in the processing of an order from start to finish. Do you have the details in a format that’s easy to communicate? Could anyone else pick up your paperwork and be able to carry on if you were not there to explain it? Accurate estimating may not have such an impact as the work of Mr Fermi, but the benefits are very real. A training course may seem extravagant, but the cost will be repaid many times over. EXPERIENCES
Back out there
How businesses are faring nine weeks after re-opening THE MANUFACTURER Core Products We have certainly faced the recent challenges head on, continuing to supply customer orders direct as many retailers took advantage of home delivery services through much of the lockdown period. This has itself created a unique set of challenges. Aside from the logistical issues created by the vast increases of parcels in the carrier network, it also meant that sales have for the past months far exceeded available supply. This is not unique to Core Products being a familiar story in many industries as manufacturing throughout the world is impacted and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.
We have managed to secure a considerable increase in production volume from our manufacturing partners. No one really knows how sales will be over the coming months, but the likelihood is that demand will exceed supply. Information is the key, so we are striving to ensure customers are fully aware of any lines where we are having supply issues. To help with this, available stock information is updated throughout the day on our website. Pricing is also becoming a pertinent issue – however, our forward planning has paid off and unlike many suppliers, we have no current plans to have to implement
increases. This is just one way we feel we can support our customers who have been so loyal to us during such a difficult year. We design and develop most products ourselves. Looking ahead, we already had new ideas for 2021 planned at the beginning of this year so most of the prototyping, material sourcing and production capacity were in place before the shutdown. We have accelerated these new ranges and placed them into production already, therefore we can assure our customers that there will be fresh new ideas added to our already extensive ranges in January if not sooner. Mike Rowley, Core Products ceo
THE SALES AGENT Malcolm Nix Furniture Associates Since last month’s update, business levels have remained strong. It seems a lot of the British public have decided to spend the money saved by not going on holiday on larger capital items. Anecdotally, many have also discovered the cost benefits of working from home, adding to the spending pot. At present, this is offsetting the reduced spending of those sadly affected by furlough. At Gradi Living we are benefitting from our consistent five-week lead time, which is attracting more buyers as each week passes and lead times in general are extending. LinkedIn has proved an increasingly useful platform via which to communicate. An awareness campaign gained a positive response, with new customers making contact and adding Gradi to their offer. In addition it provided an excellent recruitment tool as we searched for a replacement for Alan Hignett, who is reducing his portfolio of companies ahead of retirement. We wish him well and welcome Andrew Richards to the team to cover the North West. Retailers seem increasingly comfortable to welcome agents and representatives into their stores as managing social distancing, sanitising and mask-wearing become more routine. We have enjoyed meeting with them and their teams after five months. We were obviously disappointed that
24

North Point furniture show in Scotland was cancelled as there appeared to be a real sense of enthusiasm for it. Our decision to put a show van out in September and early October seems the best way to get our products in front of retailers this year and we look forward to seeing them very soon. Pressure on margins continues, mainly through currency but also some unexpected raw material increases. We are holding our prices at present but keeping this under review. Fabric continues to grow as a percentage of business, although we are

still making more leather products, but we foresee continued growth in fabric sales for the remainder of the year. I’ve been glad to be back behind the wheel, if for no other reason than the benefit of air conditioning in the recent hot spell! It seems that, other than the localised lockdowns, a new normal is now established, but we look forward to a successful vaccine to help things return to a less worrying environment. Malcom Nix, Malcolm Nix Furniture Associates owner
EXPERIENCES THE RETAILERS Fludes Carpets I have just put the phone down after taking a call from a sales rep from Sussex Life magazine. He was ringing to see if I wanted to take some space in the September issue. No thanks, I said. It is too soon to predict how business will be in the autumn, so I will protect my advertising spend for another couple of months. ‘How are you doing?’ I asked him. He told me that he was incredibly busy with his estate agency clients, who were inundated with enquiries from people looking at moving from London to the south coast. Obviously being cooped up at home has made people restless. This made me think. A couple of months ago I mentioned that to survive you must be prepared to adapt to changed circumstances. The potential of lots of people moving home sounds good to me. Time to adapt. The quickest way to get in front of potential consumers these days is to use social media and direct people to your website. So this avenue of opportunity will be explored quickly. It could be that people in London will move a strategic distance, to somewhere with good rail links into town. However, many people are now working from home so it’s also fair to anticipate that big London offices may become empty and therefore ripe for converting into residential usage. People moving from London will almost certainly pay less for their houses in Sussex, so they will be looking to buy decent flooring for their homes. My social media agents are working on this opportunity now. The prolonged lockdown that confined
people in the capital has thrown up a beneficial opportunity. Back to the cut and thrust of everyday business, it seems that shortages of carpets, underlay and vinyl are becoming an increasing problem. Chasing stock and going back and forth with alternatives are daily activities now, and this at a time when we are running on 45% fewer staff as we are keeping people on furlough. The recent hot weather combined with the requirement for customers to wear face coverings has probably contributed to a slackening of the pace of our sales as we saw fewer customers in the stores as July became August. However, most customers who come in are booking quotes before going on to confirm the purchase. We have quality
customers, but we also need a good quantity of them. It is still a fragile sales environment and working for every sale is essential. The current talk in the media is all about the ‘second wave’ and this really is a concern for retailers who have already taken the hit of three months of lost sales, not to mention a period back at work where the reduced staff base are having to work very hard and going the extra mile every day. If we do have a second wave, much of the good work that they have done in the past nine weeks since the return from lockdown could be wasted. It is vital, therefore, to try to protect the benefits that we have achieved so far and to prepare for tough times ahead. Andy Laird, Fludes Carpets md
orders. What a nice problem to have. We are also having major problems with suppliers and the out-of-stock situation – so much so that we have had to advise clients that some laminates and carpets are not coming in until October. As for underlay, I am really struggling to get hold of the amounts we need. I am told this could continue until December but I hope they are wrong. As of 1 August we shouldn’t need the furlough system any more and we still haven’t touched our COVID loan, so I feel very positive about the future. In fact, we have completed on our new warehouse and in order to get it running smoothly will have to spend close to £45,000-£50,000 on
mezzanine flooring, forklift, alarms, CCTV, office equipment, aircon and heating. I know there is a lot of doom and gloom about but we have to stay positive as consumers are spending what they might have spent on a holiday on items for the house – and flooring comes into that. We have to help the general public to feel safe coming out to shop, and I think at Floor Coverings we really have done that with free masks, gloves and sanitiser. The £6,000 we spent on PPE was a very good investment. It looks like COVID-19 will be with us for longer than we initially thought, so keep your staff and clients safe and the till will ring. Taro Strowgger, Floor Coverings owner
Floor Coverings We managed to be only 18% down on sales in June compared to the previous June, which to be honest we were extremely happy about. We had budgeted to be nearly 50% down for the first three months of opening. We had lots of feedback from clients who visited our shop commenting how happy and safe they felt with us providing masks, gloves and sanitiser. What happened next blew us all away. We started July like any normal month, but by the middle of the month it was clear it could be an amazing one – and it was. We have actually grown by 4% compared to June and July 2019 (which I might add was a record year). We now have a major fitting problem as we can’t keep up with

The reissue marks the design’s 50th anniversary
Reborn
50 years after its launch Camaleonda is back B&B Italia has reintroduced Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda half a century after its launch. The design was created to fill a void, according to Bellini. ‘At the beginning of the 1970s, upholstered furniture for the home had stagnated into the tired, traditional stereotypes and radical-provocative elitist forays into the future that, although stimulating, rarely challenged the relationship between the evolution of new patterns of behaviour in the home and the types of furniture
available on the market at the time.’ The sofa was intended as an architectural element, capable of transforming the landscape of the interior space it inhabits – a landscape that is neither immobile nor permanent, as its chameleon-like nature involves change and transformation. In its reissue, Camaleonda preserves the elements that have made it a contemporary classic. By mutual agreement, Bellini and B&B Italia decided to keep the 90cm x 90cm seat

The generous polyurethane padding that forms the characteristic capitonné design remains unchanged, and is still manufactured with the innovative system of cables, hooks and rings created by Bellini, which defines the look and modularity. Thanks to the tie-rods and the rings, in fact, the modules can be unhooked and recombined at will, allowing the sofa to adapt to an evolving taste and the dynamic needs of those using it. While many things have remained unchanged, the composition of the interior has been completely redesigned, with no room for nostalgia. ‘When I was asked to update Camaleonda it was immediately clear to me that I should

never or would never be able to do anything to change the shape. No, the way it was intended is as good today as it was then. Change the materials? Yes – and that’s why I had a conversation with a company that is a leader in terms of its ability to transform a piece of furniture into a sustainable product,’ says Bellini. The ‘sandwich’ structure of Camaleonda is made up of recycled or recyclable materials that can be easily disassembled. The seat, backrest, armrests and bases are made of wooden panels. The sofa rests on spherical feet made of FSC certified beech. The padding of the seat, backrests and armrests is made of PU in various levels of density and firmness. Roma stool, standard recliner and fixed three-seater sofa
Sherborne has returned to full capacity Sherborne Upholstery is absolutely delighted at how busy it has been this summer. ‘When we were planning our return to work, one of our main concerns was would we be busy enough to keep everyone fully employed up to Christmas? Well, we had no need to be concerned because order levels have been through the roof in recent weeks,’ says Chris Fort, Sherborne Upholstery chairman. ‘We are clearly seeing the benefits of a substantial pent-up demand over the lockdown period and beyond, with so many people not spending on holidays abroad, not spending on meals out for many weeks and either refurbishing their homes or just simply getting fed up with their old furniture.’ The company has been so busy that most departments have been working at full overtime levels throughout the summer, with an outstanding response
from its employees to the need for overtime hours. Sherborne was pleasantly surprised at how ready most of its customers were to accept deliveries of its new January ranges shortly after re-opening. The Roma and Keswick Classic in particular have been extremely popular. The Roma offers a more contemporary look than most of Sherborne’s established ranges, with a particularly comfortable back design, featuring a distinctive headroll, and soft arms. The Keswick Classic takes its most popular recliner/suite range and adapts this to suit a new wood leg design in a choice of natural or mahogany finishes. The range comprises a standard fixed chair, two-seater and standard powered recliner: Sherborne’s first powered recliner on legs. Sherborne’s new January adjustable
bed launch was the Devonshire, based on the popular Dorchester design but offering a sophisticated fully sprung base for more comfort. This is available with either a corded or a remote RF handset and in a wide selection of 25 new bed fabrics in the Sunset Collection. ‘As we have been so busy, we have introduced just one new range for the autumn, which is an addition to the popular Malham riser recliner range as a standard recliner, fixed chair, and fixed and reclining two and three-seater sofas have been added. These can be ordered in either fabric or soft covers with a choice of dark or light knuckles. ‘We are certainly set fair for the autumn and are pleased to support the new British Furniture Confederation’s Buy British campaign which we hope will be a great success,’ says Fort. www.sherborneupholstery.co.uk

A new age
Photographer and film maker Monica Medez has created images and a video to promote the collection
The marketing story has been reinvented Object Carpet × Ippolito Fleitz Group is a collection that no longer settles for just telling a story. Instead it strives to create a new one from scratch. ‘An engagement with the subtle power of floor materials has become a pivotal design debate, just as an engagement with the changing spirit of the times is central to a functional product. How, for instance, does new work redefine spaces? Why are hotel concepts evolving so rapidly into temporary living? Does this affect the concept of living itself? And how does flooring support the shopping and brand experience in the retail market?’ says Tilla Goldberg, Ippolito Fleitz Group head of product design. ‘Many of these questions are now answered by the eight products in 111 colour shades designed by Ippolito Fleitz Group and carpet manufacturer Object Carpet – reflected in the playful combinations of the photo series and accompanying film. When SmartStrand was unveiled in 2005, it was quickly embraced by consumers looking for an innovative , bio-based alternative to traditional carpets. In the years since, SmartStrand has earned an impressive record as the only carpet that boasts durability and permanent, built-in stain resistance.
THE WORLD’S MOST FORGIVING CARPET is now introducing SmartStrand Forever Clean, the first carpet to combine built-in stain protection with a nanotechnology spill shield. The best carpet ever invented ... AGAIN SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets offer the highest level of beauty, comfort and performance available. • The perfect carpet for families with kids and pets • New Nanoloc™ spill protection technology for quick and easy cleanup • The only carpet with permanent built-in stain and soil protection that won’t wear or wash off • Exceptional durability that preserves the style, beauty and appearance of your carpet • Luxurious softness that you can sink your toes into • A breakthrough technology in renewable and sustainable carpet fibre to preserve the beauty of our planet
FOREVER · CLEAN Proprietary carpet protection system The best way to avoid stains altogether is to keep dirt and spills from settling into the carpet and becoming stains.
BUILT-IN STAIN PROTECTION
SmartStrand Forever Clean features NanolocTM, an advanced nanotechnology that completely encapsulates the SmartStrand fibre to create a superior spill and soil barrier. Permanent built-in stain protection SmartStrand Forever Clean is the only carpet with stain resistance built into the core of the fibre. Other carpets use temporary, topical protections that wash and wear off over time, which makes the carpet difficult to clean.
NANOLOC SPILL SHIELD
Easier to clean SmartStrand Forever Clean simply does not hold onto dirt. Through independent vacuum testing, SmartStrand Forever Clean has been shown to release up to 3x more dirt than other carpets. That means you can breathe easy knowing that your floor cleans up faster, better and more easily than any other carpet.
FOREVER · DURABLE
SmartStrand Forever Clean is made with an innovative fibre, engineered to resist matting and crushing. This unique trait is built into the fibre at the molecular level, causing the fibre to bounce back, maintaining its beauty and appearance over time.
FOREVER · SOFT
Carpet adds beautiful warmth and comfort to a room like no other flooring. SmartStrand Forever Clean lets you enjoy this comfort with long-lasting peace of mind. The SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets have a particularly pleasant feel. They are extremely soft and smooth.

... is made in part with annually renewable plant-based materials that minimize our usage of limited natural resources. This also enables us to reduce our energy consumption in the manufacturing of all SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets. It’s good to know you can have the beauty, softness and durability you desire in a carpet without compromising the beautiful earth around us. SmartStrand fibres are for 37% made with natural starch, leading to the most eco-friendly yarn available on the market today. The amount of energy required to produce the SmartStrand Triexta fibre is a full 30% less than with other fibres. The whole production process consequently emits 63% less CO2 than is the case with other synthetic fibres. Night Birds Exterior is identical to the original indoor collection, which was inspired by the freedom and abandon of bird flight. The Bed Industry Awards is returning and buying British is being promoted ‘We are excited and delighted to be running the Bed Industry Awards this year after all. We might not have a Bed Show to go to – but, we thought, our members still have lots of exciting product innovations to shout about, and retailers are still doing amazing things to be the best for their customers. So why not run the awards as usual and host an online awards ceremony – on Thursday 26 November,’ says Jessica Alexander, National Bed Federation executive director. ‘We have some great categories for our awards this year – some familiar, some completely new, and one that we hope won’t have to be repeated after this year. ‘The categories for bed retailers are: Small Bed Retailer of the Year (fewer than 10 shops); Large Bed Retailer of the Year; and Online Bed Retailer of the Year. For NBF members: Bed of the Year, Accessory Product of the Year and Component/Machinery Product of the Year. And for both groups: Sustainability Award and COVID-19 Community Award. ‘We have lined up some amazing judges and this year we have also been

THE ‘BUY BRITISH, BUY THE BEST, SAVE JOBS‘ CAMPAIGN WILL RUN FROM 19 SEPTEMBER ‘We are very pleased to be supporting the British Furniture Confederation and working closely with the British Furniture Manufacturers Association (BFM) on this initiative, aimed at stimulating demand for furniture and beds this autumn. ‘With unemployment rates likely to increase rapidly over the coming months, we wanted to encourage consumers to be a bit more aware of where their furniture purchases come from – and perhaps help save jobs and skills that might never return and prevent a further decline in British furniture manufacturing as a result. Did you know, every £1m spent by consumers in the shops supports around 50 jobs in furniture manufacturing?’ says Alexander. ‘The “Buy British, Buy the Best, Save Jobs” campaign is set to run from 19 September to 18 October and for any stores or brands who want to support it there’s a free toolkit of graphics and social media elements for you to develop your own POS and online promotions. ‘For a small fee, you can also buy swing tickets, and have your logo and website listed on the campaign website. The fee includes a small contribution to the launch PR campaign which will be pitched to national and regional print and online publications, and to radio and TV. The news story will be based on a national consumer survey, which will also inform a short campaign video being made for social media use.’ Visit: www.britishfurnitureconfederation.org.uk

This is all thanks to the rigorous independent auditing NBF members undergo to meet our industry-leading Code of Practice. ‘Importantly, the new scheme is supported by a dynamic postcode search listing on the NBF website which attracts up to 50,000 visitors a month. For many consumers this represents the first step in their bed-buying journey and the website now directs them to their nearest Retail Champion. ‘We will be promoting this new “where to buy” feature heavily over the coming months, so if you’re retailing beds, why hesitate? ‘In addition, those signing up for the new scheme will receive a full POS pack which includes two window vinyls and a large, double-sided hanging board flagging the store’s status with a Premier or Retail Champion logo. Generic tent cards explain to the consumer why they should buy NBF Approved beds. Each pack also contains 20 swing tickets and 20 adhesive labels which can be attached to NBF member beds, headboards, bed frames or roll-up mattresses in the stores.’ Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk/trade/ nbf-retail-champions-scheme/

At the core
The glue-free Cortec spring system is at the heart of new collections It has been a fast-paced and exciting year for luxury bed manufacturer Harrison Spinks. Following the company’s pledge to make production completely glue and foam free, it has launched the ground-breaking Cortec spring system, a glue-free spring unit that now forms the core of its range of mattresses and brought home the Bed Industry Awards Component of the Year award for 2019. The unit is manufactured using heat instead of glue, meaning it can be completely recycled at the end of its lifetime, ultimately resulting in zero mattresses being sent to landfill. Cortec Ultra, Cortec Quad and Cortec Revolution core spring units are all present in the manufacturer’s new

Seasonal Turn and Turn Free collections launching in September. All mattresses from these collections can be disassembled and recycled at the end of their lifetime. Cortec Quad is featured in the recently launched Velocity collection, which can be rolled and eco-packed for convenience and ease of delivery. This is Harrison Spinks’ first off-the-shelf, next-day delivery offering that can be seen to rival bed-in-a-box retailers. Cortec Revolution is a take on the company’s Millennium Award-winning Revolution spring-within-spring system, created by Simon Spinks, Harrison Spinks group chairman for unrivalled levels of comfort and support.
As well as a Cortec spring system, each of the new models features Harrison Spinks’ newly developed wool viscose ticking, which is FR-chemical free. This follows almost a year of development and instils confidence that each component in a Harrison Spinks bed has been tested for harmful substances in order to create a healthy sleeping environment. On top of these landmark innovations, Harrison Spinks was also awarded Carbon Neutral+ accreditation earlier this year and has bolstered its credentials further with an urban tree planting scheme in its local community, which will continue this winter. BEDS AND BEDROOM Wool Originals
Lifecycle
A Hypnos mattress can contain up to eight fleeces
Wool plays a vital part in Hypnos’s products ‘Right from the start of the process, we consider the lifecycle as well as the qualities of the fibres we use. We also consider the wider impact of our supply chain on the communities we work with, so it’s vital our materials aren’t just sustainable but that they come from a socially conscious supplier too. This is what makes a product truly sustainable and ethical. ‘It is not enough to state that the wool in the bed is British – this is in effect meaningless for a consumer, as no one knows which farms or sheep have supplied the wool; it is all mixed together and farmers are paid very little for their produce,’ says Richard Naylor, Hypnos Beds sustainable development director. ‘As a brand we go the extra mile to support hard-working British sheep
farmers and source ethical wool that’s traceable to Red Tractor assured farms. Because of the way we source and buy our wool, farmers get a much higher and fairer price for their wool, without any delays, helping them to plan their cash flow and future projects. Last year we paid farmers more than 180% above what they might have received by selling through conventional channels.’ No Hypnos beds contain foam. ‘Using foams has a negative environmental impact and mattresses featuring these foams can produce harmful gases as compounds within the fibres break down. Using microplastics within products can also be harmful as once they’re broken down at the end of their life, they can release toxins into the world’s oceans.
Hypnos pays farmers more than the open market price

‘Natural materials offer a range of comfort and wellbeing benefits but are also biodegradable. Once wool fibres are disposed of in soil, it takes a short time for them to break down, unlike synthetic counterparts which are slow to degrade. ‘Using ethically sourced natural wool fibres has many benefits, as wool is breathable, odour-resistant and a true natural insulator – aiding a great night’s sleep. Wool is also a natural by-product of sheep farming, which helps in the careful management of grasslands and our eco-diversity, so we’re proud that this superhero material plays such a key role in our supply chain,’ says Naylor. ‘Wool fibres are tightly packed together and crimped, forming tiny pockets of air within the material that allow it to absorb and release moisture. This breathable element is what makes wool the perfect material for bedmaking, as wool constantly reacts to changes in body temperature thanks to its hygroscopic abilities, providing comfort in both cold and warm weather. ‘Wool’s crimped structure also gives it extra elasticity, meaning it can stretch comfortably before returning to its natural shape. This is important from a mattress perspective, as it allows the material to retain its structure over time, meaning it’s more resistant to wrinkling or sagging, adding peace of mind, durability and lifespan to our products.’ Visit: www.hypnosbeds.com

The core of the Trio triple-layer all-foam mattress
Performance The Komfi brand has revamped its collection GNG Group, manufacturer of performance foam products for the retail mattress, healthcare and sports markets, was to launch its latest Komfi mattress collection at this year’s Bed Show. In February, former Breasley Consumer Products co-founder Stuart Hibbert joined the group as sales director for the consumer mattress division to develop the vacuumpacked range and re-energise the Komfi brand. As a result, Komfi can now offer retailers a unique range of mattresses featuring innovative materials and the latest in sleep comfort technology. The collection comprises 10 models within the Active and Sensory ranges. The Active range features Komfi’s Ecofoam: this British-made 100% recycled and re-engineered foam not only has a reduced carbon footprint but is also resilient and durable, offering excellent body support. The long-term benefit of an Ecofoam mattress is when it comes to the end of its natural life: at this point it can go back into the recycling chain rather than into landfill, helping to create a more sustainable future. The Komfi Active range also includes a cover option using Seaqual fibre. This technology involves taking
52

plastic marine waste from our oceans and converting it into a yarn for use in mattress fabrics. The Sensory range features Komfi’s exclusive ViscoGel in its four models. Three mattresses are hybrid pockets ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 spring counts, plus the Trio triple-layer all-foam mattress. ViscoGel’s heat-transference technology features super-conductive graphene, one of the latest materials to be used in mattress design. Graphene creates a pathway for body heat, allowing it to dissipate naturally as you rest, regardless of how much you move during sleep. This creates a more comfortable and ambient sleeping environment, night after night. ‘We were excited to be showcasing the new Komfi collection at the Bed Show, and so looking forward to meeting up with customers and friends after what has been an extremely challenging time. However, we will get the opportunity to share our fantastic new ranges, and the fact we have managed to bring them to market in the original timescale is an achievement. The collection offers ethical, innovative design at affordable prices, which is what consumers are
seeking right now,’ says Hibbert. Komfi is an AIS approved supplier and plans to exhibit at the Autumn Furniture Fair and January Furniture Show. During lockdown, GNG Group remained fully operational to maintain the NHS supply chain. As an NHS approved supplier, it was producing medical mattresses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, large-scale investment in new machinery still went ahead, along with plans for a greener footprint. ‘We are proud to announce that GNG has recently achieved carbon neutral certification, and our first carbon neutral mattress is currently undergoing testing at our Wakefield site. As a group, we will continue to research and innovate, sharing knowledge across our specialist divisions, to enhance and support our carbon footprint standard,’ says Phil Whittell, GNG Group md. Karndean Designflooring is introducing its new-look multi-format Van Gogh collection, with oak designs available in both a gluedown and rigid core format, as well as launching an exclusive selection of on-trend herringbones. Designed to offer greater flexibility, it means the same design can be used throughout the home in either gluedown or rigid core. Whilst rigid core is available for quicker installation times and added acoustic benefits, gluedown offers additional design elements such as optional laying patterns, borders and design features. The new-look collection features the brand’s most recognised contemporary and classic designs in a standard 48in x 7in size, as well as welcoming six designs inspired by European oaks and American barnwood in a larger 56in x 9in plank and four exclusive 28in x 7in herringbones.
Like all Karndean floors, the designs are handcrafted to reflect the intricate beauty of real timber, but Grey Brushed Oak, Warm Brushed Oak and Golden Brushed Oak feature a new natural wood-grain emboss, accentuating the natural texture and aesthetics of the individual wood that inspired it. There’s also Shadow Oak with its subtle cross-sawn markings and muted, weathered appearance, and Nimbus Oak – a delicate balance of long straight grain and beautiful flowery grain. For those looking to make a statement, Salvaged Barnwood is a perfect match with its deep variation and burnished tones. ‘The designs encompass some of our most celebrated hues including classic Country Oak, traditional French Oak and Scandi Blush Oak in a gluedown and rigid core option for the first time,’ says Stella Coyle, Karndean Designflooring national retail sales manager.

‘As home designers look to us for more flexibility when selecting their floor, we’re excited to be taking our first steps in offering the same beautiful design across multi-formats. It means those looking for the continuity of the same colourway throughout the home are not restricted to gluedown, especially if they face the challenge of an uneven subfloor in an adjoining room. ‘With herringbone being a favourite laying pattern, the introduction of our first rigid core herringbone design will open up new options for renovators looking for enhanced acoustics. ‘It will come as no surprise to those who are familiar with our brand that our Van Gogh collection is one of our most popular with a wide palette of cool neutral, grey and warm tones, and we hope our new designs will excite your customers as much as they do us.’ Visit: karndean.com/newvangogh

Coordinated by Rodolfo Dordoni with Minotti, the company’s 2020 outdoor collection hosts pieces by leading international designers such as GamFratesi, Marcio Kogan/studio mk27 and Dordoni himself. LIke the 2020 indoor collection, it is based on the main geometric shapes: square, rectangle, circle. The couture aspect, another leitmotiv of Minotti’s interior designs, can be found in the juxtaposition of materials, the choice of natural wood and the tactile textiles. Terrace combines shapes from the past in the tapered legs, with contemporary technology used to create the cast aluminium frame, in polished varnished white and pewter finish. The rectangular top, in stone-effect ceramic, is available in two colours, Stone Brown and Marble Grey.

Unique
Zanotta is paying tribute to Carlo Mollino Designer and architect Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) is today a well-known figure, but this was not the case in 1981, when Aurelio Zanotta decided to manufacture the solid-wood Fenis Alpine chair. Fenis was designed by Mollino in 1959 for the campus of the Turin Polytechnic, where he had been a professor since 1953 and of which he later became rector. In the early 1980s, Zanotta became interested in the experiments carried out by Mollino in interior design. Since then, Zanotta has tirelessly studied the contents of the Mollino archive, in an attempt to perfect the collection of objects in its range. Zanotta is framing the collection as a tribute and not as a reissue, because Mollino is truly unique in his genre. He did not design for industrial production but
instead collaborated with artisans and other figures who worked on the original designs, modifying them as part of a concerted effort. Mollino’s designs and sketches were not blueprints for mass production but documents designed to be discussed in the workshop. Zanotta’s Mollino Collection 2020 features eight tribute pieces covering a period of 21 years, all featuring the initials CM: Fenis CM (1959), a re-design of the typical Valle D’Aosta-style chair; the Carlino CM storage container – the first piece designed by Mollino, in 1938, which rests on a single pointed leg and also features a drawer; the Milo CM mirror designed for Casa Miller in 1938, evoking the curved, seductive lines of the Venus de Milo statue; the Ardea CM armchair (1946), designed for socialising,
with a high backrest that curves over itself at the top, creating a more private, intimate space; the Reale CM table (1948) featuring a complex, architectural trestle structure that supports a glass table top; the Arabesco CM side table (1949), characterised by the balance between the curved, carved lines of the structure and the transparent surfaces; the Cavour CM desk (1949) with its contrast between the natural, slanting lines of the structure and the bold, geometric presence of the storage compartment, chest of drawers and glass top; and the reclining Gilda CM armchair (1953), which embodies the designer’s eclectic style thanks to a sophisticated structure which uses the armrest to link the front and rear legs. REGULATIONS Fillings must meet the Furniture and Furnishing (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988
Getting it right
Source 5 and 7 tests use a wooden crib
Supplying contract furniture has its own set of rules ‘In England and Wales, the responsibility for fire safety in non-domestic buildings lies with the operator of the building. (The legal situation in Scotland and Northern Ireland is different.) Risk assessments are the responsibility of the employer if the building is a place of work, and of the person who has control of the building, such as the occupier or the owner of the building, if the building is not a place of work,’ says Andrew Munns, SATRA technologist. The risk assessment will cover fire doors, fire escapes, fire-fighting equipment and signage as well as furniture: furniture fire safety is likely to be only a minor part of the assessment. ‘When deciding on the requirements for furniture, the responsible person will use several factors in determining the potential fire hazard and the required furniture specification. These factors include: the use of the room; whether or not smoking is permitted; the number of seating units; the level of occupancy – for example, the number of beds; the size of the room and its location; whether occupants sleep at the premises; type of fire escape; mobility of occupants; use of automatic fire detection system; use of automatic fire extinguishing system; and any special hazards, such as cooking, strobe lighting and locked internal doors, and staff training in evacuation procedures,’ says Munns.
68
Interiors Monthly September 2020
Having assessed the hazard area level involved, the selected furniture can be tested according to BS 7176. There are four different hazard levels for contract furniture: low, for example an office; medium, for example a restaurant or hotel room; high, for example certain hospital wards, and very high, such as prison cells. ‘Because suppliers of furniture cannot control the use of the furniture after they have supplied it, and because the furniture might be moved from a lower to a higher hazard location, it is advisable to label it according to the hazard category to which it complies. Failure to do this could put the furniture supplier at risk of legal action if the furniture were to be moved to a more severe hazard category and a fire were to occur. If there is no declaration on the product as to the suitability of the item for a particular end use or hazard category, the supplier might be in a weak position to demonstrate that the product is fit for purpose. Also the correct design of label must be used,’ says Munns. Each hazard level has different test requirements. For low hazard this includes two applications of a smouldering cigarette (as per EN 1021-1:2006) and three applications of a match flame ignition source (as per EN 1021-2:2006), which are applied to the cover and filling
composite. For medium hazard, the low hazard requirements apply plus a flame ignition source 5 test: a small wooden crib 65mm tall is ignited with the help of a small amount of alcohol. This test must be done on the combination of cover and filling(s) together. For high hazard, the test requirements include those of low hazard plus a flame ignition source 7 test, which involves a larger wooden crib, similar to ignition source 5. For very high hazard, the test requirements include those of low hazard plus any flame ignition source from BS 5852:2006 Section 11 or 12. In practice, this might consist of several ignition source 7 cribs used together. All fillings must meet the ignition resistance requirements of the Furniture and Furnishing (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. Each cover and filling should be re-tested every 2,500 units produced (or every 20,000m of fabric for predictive tests) or once per month, whichever is the more practical, or where there is a change to the specification or supplier. For lower production quantities there is no requirement for re-testing. There is a mandatory water-soak and line-drying procedure for all cover fabrics and all fillings must be compliant with the UK domestic regulations – for example, a PU foam should pass the Schedule 1 Part I test of these regulations. Interiors Monthly September 2020
Core Products has won the Interiors Monthly Best Flat-Packed Furniture Supplier award for the second year in a row. ‘Everyone at Core is delighted to receive this honour, especially in such a challenging year for all of us,’ says Mike Rowley, Core Products ceo. ‘It really does represent the hard work and dedication of everyone in the company and is testament that products and service are equally important. Through hard work and determination our administrative and distribution teams managed to operate throughout most of the lockdown, ensuring that our retailers could still supply goods direct to the doors of their customers, so maintaining trade. ‘Many of our new products for 2020 have had to rely purely on ecommerce sales as so many retail outlets were closed, so it is fair to say the increase in sales is really driven by what consumers are actually buying. As more shops now replenish displays this is giving us a much more concise overview of what is selling. Usually we have to rely on retailer response first, so this year does give us all a rather unique perspective when selecting new lines. ‘Amongst the star performers is the new Augusta range, the launch of which
coincides with the resurgence of pine as the wood of choice after the dominance of oak for so many years. As well as being a stylish design it is also exceptionally well-priced. ‘For 2020 we introduced an entire new collection of contemporary and modern living ranges that really reflect the changing way we live. Particularly popular during the time we have all spent at home have been drinks cabinets and stylised individual pieces such as bookcases. New hardwearing and easyto-clean wood effect and stone finishes have also been favourites. ‘Innovation is paramount to our continued expansion of products and never more so than the Ayr mirrored bedroom collection, which being flatpacked is so easy to deliver safely and quickly. We have really striven to meet the ever-changing demands of customers and have seen many changes since we started out over 30 years ago. By developing our own ranges with the UK customer specifically in mind, alongside being one of the very first suppliers to invest in automated ordering and contact-minimal dispatch systems, we look forward to the coming year with confidence.’ Visit: www.coreproducts.co.uk

The Autumn Furniture Show 2020, 6-7 October, NAEC Stoneleigh, Kenilworth
PREVIEW

The show goes on
NAEC Stoneleigh is part of the Stoneleigh Park complex
Exhibitions are returning The past several months have seen many exhibitions cancelled as coronavirus made mass gatherings impossible. Events can now take place from 1 October, and one of the first will be the Autumn Furniture Show. But as with many things this year, the event will differ from 2019. The show will be COVID secure and Government guidelines will be strictly adhered to. All visitors must pre-register on the website, as this will not be possible at the venue on the day. NAEC Stoneleigh is a purpose-built venue, easily accessed by motorway and rail links and conveniently positioned within a short drive of Birmingham Airport. Hotel accommodation, if required, can be found locally. Parking and admission are free and all furniture trade buyers are very welcome to attend. A complementary light lunch is available to all visitors over the two days. Stand take-up has been brisk, with many exhibitors taking this opportunity to present their autumn offers. The exhibitors themselves are from a good cross-section of the industry: cabinet furniture, beds, bedroom furniture and upholstery, and include many well-known brands. A full exhibitor list can be found on the website.

A link to the online show guide can also be found on the website, together with general show information. This long-standing event, taking place across two exhibition halls, presents a great opportunity to see the latest
designs and benefit from show offers. A chance to catch up with trade and retail friends and colleagues is an added advantage in this important pre-Christmas period. Visit: www.theautumnfurnitureshow.co.uk

surprised by the success of the show, with the figures demonstrating ‘the irreplaceable physical exposure’ it represents for the industry, and said it shows how much ‘the experience and the opportunity to touch the quality of the furniture with your own hands plays
an important role in the decision-making process of the buyers.’ The 46th CIFF Shanghai is due to be held from 7-10 September, while the 47th CIFF Guangzhou will be held from 18-21 and 28-31 March 2021. Visit: www.ciff.furniture
