President’s Perspective Hello Holstein Enthusiasts! I would like to congratulate all of our State Convention award winners that were awarded on Saturday, February 26th at our Annual Convention near Waukon at Empty Nest Winery. Thank you to District 1 for hosting a great event. I look forward to the state sponsored Spring Sale and getting back to a live sale this year, along with our calf raffle. As a reminder the sale is Saturday, March 19th. We will do the calf raffle prior to the Spring Sale. We will also have our excutive meeting on March 18 and board meeting the morning of the sale like usual. Thank you to the farms for providing the calves this year. If you haven’t already bought your tickets, please do so. They are $100 each and can be purchased by contacting any of our board members or contact Shellie or Carl to purchase. The proceeds are used to help fund some of our adult and junior activities. Also, it’s not too early to be thinking about National Convention. Consider making plans to attend the 2022 National Convention which will be held not too far away in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. For those details check out their website and or Facebook page, June will be here before we know it. Have a safe spring! Dan Moon

2021 Iowa Holstein Princess Hello All! As spring approaches, it brings to mind that my reign as your State Princess comes to an end. As I reflect on the past year as Iowa Holstein Princess, I have had the honor of representing the Holstein breed and producers. Reminiscing on the past year, I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given. One of the most impressive experiences I was a part of was the State Holstein Show in West Union. From the depth of quality in the cattle that were presented to the excitement and eagerness that the junior members bestowed. I would like to tell all of the exhibitors that they need to be very proud of themselves and all of their hard work. Congratulations to all of you!!! I would like to wish the best of luck to the next Iowa Holstein Royalty and to make the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I look forward to continuing to represent and be an advocate for the dairy industry. Thank you for all of the memories and support that each and every one of you extended to me. Signing off and best regards, Brooke Courtney

Iowa State University Dairy Science Student Profile
Name: Amanda Engelken Hometown: Earlville, IA High School: Maquoketa Valley Class Size: 48 Farm Name: Delta Acres Dairy Major: Animal Science
Why did you decide to attend ISU? I decided on Iowa State because it has a very strong Animal Science program, and has a very high placement rate for graduating seniors. ISU is also well known for their Dairy Science program which also made me decided to come here. What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable experience was competing at the World Dairy Expo Dairy Judging Contest with Kaskaskia College. It was one of the longest days of my life, but nothing has beaten the excitement of the awards ceremony and seeing all of the hard work pay off. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course was ANS 225, Intro to Swine Science. Pigs are kind of my new found love in college. I like being able to learn about a whole new species and learning about a different aspect of animal agriculture. What are your future career goals? Upon graduation, my plan is stay within the dairy industry, working within nutrition. I also want to and plant to stay involved in my family’s dairy farm.
