We are pleased to introduce our first issue of In Review magazine. Our intention is to deliver this new media to our Brazilian community in Florida, New York, São Paulo & Rio de Janeiro. It is a new magazine with lots of experience from what we call our “Ikigai.” To the Japanese culture, Ikigai means a “reason for being.” According to the Japanese, everyone has an Ikigai. Finding it, requires a deep and often lengthy search of self. It is a person’s reason for getting out of bed each morning. Those who find their Ikigai become passionately involved in a focused activity. This is our reason to introduce you to In Review. The content of this magazine will contribute toward furthering the Brazilian cultural influence in the United States and abroad. My former and “wisdom” boss, late Rodrigo Soares use to say that a community without a voice goes nowhere. I agree. Our collaborators represent our voices, our culture, who we are and what we do. With that said, there is no better voice than Professor Ivo Pitanguy; famous worldwide and known as the greatest Plastic surgeon ever — a humanist with an extensive career in this field. His professional life, which I have been familiar with for so many years, and his execution, will present a new understanding of Plastic surgery as we know it. Going further, Rangel Cavalcante will keep you posted on facets of our Brazilian Government. One of the most well informed journalist from Brasilia, his connections and knowledge about what is happening behind the public eye, will delight you. When it comes to Miami, our best bet lies with our collaborator Genilde Guerra from Kravitz & Guerra. Their professional knowledge will introduce new solutions about investments, real estate and immigration law. Furthermore, Lazaro Medeiros is presenting our social column from Brazil and elsewhere. Readers will be delighted to experience the glamour of a Dinner Gala in Copacabana Palace recently promoted by amfAR, with the added presence of international celebrities whom gathered together for a great cause. Switzerland …the Paradise of the Watchmaking Industry. Tourism prior to the Baselworld Trade Fair.
M
illions of tourists visit the best resorts and casinos of Lugano, where glamour and the ski resorts of St. Moritz, and Gstaad meet, with the beautiful Neuchatel Lake and Jura Swiss mountains as background. Switzerland, the birthplace of the watchmaking industry, is where one can find the world’s most famous watch brands. This is where Baselworld takes place — considered the world’s most important trade show for the watchmaking industry. Basel is the meeting place for watch and jewelry lovers. Buyers come from all over the world in search of innovation and novelties in this industry, generating revenue in the billions. The trail of watches, as it is known, begins in Geneva where many of the most famous brands have their own museums. Baselworld is the perfect tourism ride for lovers of this industry. If you wish to combine work and leisure, this is the perfect occasion. In Geneva you find the most famous and traditional brands namely, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Breguet, Longines Cartier, F.B.Journe, and De Witt among many others. As the watchmaking industry’s founding city, on the left hand side of Lake Geneva where it converges with the Rhone River, the neon signs of the main headquarters of these famous brands, Patek Philippe & Rolex, are visible. This tradition all began in the 16th century when John Calvin, the French theologian, determined that Geneva would be the center of the Protestant Reform. A very conservative man, he considered and then managed to prohibit through legislation, clothing and similar industries from the city. Watches were excluded from the ban as he considered them to be of great use and respectability. Hence, they could be worn. Soon watchmakers from Italy, France and Flanders became established in Geneva thus beginning the industry in this part of the world. Watches were the only adornment that Calvinists

were allowed. Today, Geneve is the nerve center of other important industries aside from watchmaking. Famous Museums Patek Philippe Museum is located at the number 7 of rue des Vieux at Grenadiers. Patek Philippe is a family business belonging to the Stern Group. For the “connoisseurs” Patek is considered the world’s most traditional and famous watch brand. Its advertising slogan is faithful to Patek Philippe’s concept — “You are never an owner. You are simply a guardian for the next generation.” Patek Philippe’s collection dates from 1839. In this collection some of the Patek watches have reached record sales during international auctions, setting unique standards in the industry. The Patek Museum displays an extensive autonomous enamel watch collection, and miniatures dating from the 16th century. The “Masters” of the European Watchmaking are part of this collection. The world’s biggest watch is found at the Hotel Cornvin, at Boulevard 33 of James Fazy. The watch measures 30 meters in height and 3 meters in width, with a pendulum of 26 meters! The Malbuisson Watch at “Malbuisson Passage” was created by the Master Watchmaker Edouard Wirth. The curious fact about this watch is its re-creation of “Escalade,” the attack on Geneva known as the 1602 Savoy Battle. At each hour the sixteen bells of the watch carillon chime, along with a parade of its 42 bronze figures and 13 chariots. The “Escalade” is a spectacle. At the Jardin Anglais, on the right margin of the river, is located the Flower’s Watch which is considered a work of art in technology and floral art. Located in the middle of the city, it was built in 1955 and is the second largest in size in Switzerland. Over 7,000 flowers and plants are used in its display and they are constantly exchanged with new and different colors each year.

South of the River Jura Neuchâtel and the Vallee de Joux are recognized as the birthplaces of the Swiss’s watchmaking industry. Farmers and “villagers” at the time took up this hobby to pass time, especially during their long winters. Under hanging lamps an occupation was born: the so-called “assembleurs,” who put together all the watch pieces using machines and manual labor for completion of the final piece. The most important municipalities at the Vallee de Joux are: Le Sentier, and Le Lieu e L’abbaye. Before or after the Baselworld Trade Show it is worthwhile to rent a car and explore the local restaurants, taste the wine, and appreciate the marvelous landscape. Brands such as Vacheron Constantin, Breguet, JaegerLe-Coultre, Blancpain, and Audemars Piguet, are produced at this valley where tradition and quality walk hand in hand. The Hotel des Horlogers, a four-star hotel located approximately 25 miles from Geneva, is near all the aforementioned watchmaking factories. The Hotel organizes tours and visits to the watchmaking factories. At the Watchmaking Center in Sentier, you can have access to the process of assembling and disassembling a mechanical watch. At the end of the process, the watch is yours. Attendees are given lessons about watchmaking history and technical classes are also given to those who are industry lovers. Also worth visiting is the “Space Horloger” at Le Sentier. There you will have access to the complete history of the watchmakers of the Vallee de Joux. A few miles north, in the Valde Travers region, is located the “Vila de Fleurier,” at the Areuse River. This river supplies hydro energy to the industry, which dates from 1730. Brands such as Chopard, and Parmigiani Fleurier, are produced in this region.
The brands Cartier, Panerai, Girard-Perregaux, Chanel, Tag Heuer, Ulysse Nardin, Bulgari, Zenith, Hermes, Montblanc, to list just a few, are produced at La Chaux-deFonds, Le Locle, Villeret, and Saint Imier. A big tourist attraction is the 900-year old Carillon located in Neuchâtel, close to La Chaux-de-Fonds. This is considered by UNESCO to be one of the world’s wonders. The carillon can be found at the center of this industrial town. Neuchâtel, a place where homes and factories mingle peacefully, was the birthplace of Luis Breguet. Breguet was the inventor of several watch motions and devices among them the famous “tourbillon.” La Chaux-de-Fonds is one of the pivotal cities for the watchmaking industry. In this city is the famous Wostep School for those studying the art of watchmaking. This city was built with the main purpose of becoming an industrial center, even though it also includes residential homes and cottages. The International Museum of Watch Makers is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This museum has the biggest collection of watches with over 5,000 pieces which date from the 16th century. The history of the city can be told through its watches as well as the History Museum located in the town which preserves the craftsmanship. The Longines Museum is located at St. Imier. Longines was one of the first brands to be established in the region. This museum recounts the historical journey of the brand since 1832. This is a bi-lingual city where people speak French and German. Biel/Bienne is also one of the reference pillars pertaining to watchmaking — namely brands such as Breitling, Swatch Group and Omega. BaselWorld Show-Basel Each year buyers from all over the world meet to discover the novelties of the industry. There are more than 100,000

collectors, buyers, and manufacturers who attend to the Baselworld trade show, considered the world’s biggest watchmaking trade show. To put together this gigantic trade show, its organizers count on the assistance of more than 1,000 professional contractors daily. Together, with many other workers, they assemble the booths which display their products. Luxury “maisons,” inside a type of concrete hangar, display Patek Philippe, Rolex, Hublot, Zenith, Swatch Group, Breguet, Tag Heuer, and Carl Bucherer brands. This is the A Pavillion. Jewelry and other industry products are found in different Pavillions, which are separated by product category and countries of origin. This is the United Nations of the jewelry industry. Alone, Baselworld moves the world’s watchmaking industry — thus determining the billions in sales and the future of the industry. This industry of billions, which inherently depends on the value and fluctuation of gold in the international market, is the same market which determines the final cost of the product for the importing countries. There is a mixture of races, creeds and languages under the same roof (more than four gigantic buildings) all sharing the same goals: buy and sell. The hotels in Basel usually accommodate more than 800,000 visitors per night. Reservations are made at least six months in advance of the event. It is an exciting week for all of those important world brands. Cocktails and parties take place each night during the show, and the largest world’s buyers are invited. In Basel you have access to the most exquisite jewelry which is exhibited alongside the watches. The Basel organization is unparalleled in the world, unique not only by the bulk of products but also by their design, quality, and exclusivity.

The Brazilian presence in BaselWorld Apart from the usual and well-known Brazilian exuberance, Brazil’s watchmaking industry is discreet by nature. The Brazilians who display their products at Baselworld do it with the support of a Brazilian Government official agency known as IBGM, Brazilian Gems & Jewelry. Others display their products independently as does Antonio Guerreiro, a Baselworld participant and owner of a jewelry studio in Rio de Janeiro. H. Stern Jewelers Worldwide famous, H. Stern, carries the name of its founder, Hans Stern. This company is ranked as the most important producer/distributor chain of watches and jewelry of Brazil-South Cone. Some of the largest world brands utilize H. Stern as their official distributor. H. Stern is also an exhibitor at Baselworld. A history of success which began with the arrival of the young Hans Stern, a native of Germany, who found support at the Jewish Community of Rio de Janeiro. In Rio de Janeiro, he began a career as an accountant but soon after he was involved in the business of Brazilian precious gems which were highly coveted overseas. With a great business acumen, in a few years, H. Stern expanded his store chain to the country’s main capital cities, and finally, overseas, thus becoming a presence of international prestige in many countries, including the U.S., with several stores in New York. Nowadays, H. Stern’s children are the ones in command of this worldwide famous company whose jewelry can be seen embellishing famous movie stars in the United States and Brazil.

Amsterdan Sauer The story of Jules Sauer, besides being unique, is one of perseverance and great tenacity. Escaping the Nazis, he arrived in Portugal by biking throughout Europe. From there, he traveled to Brazil, destination Rio de Janeiro. His big discovery was Minas Gerais, the Brazilian State which has a variety of rich and colorful precious gems. This is the paradise for the industry’s connoisseurs. Jules Sauer is considered one of the greatest in this industry. Through his knowledge and hard work the “green gem” became known as the Brazilian Emerald, which until then had no value in the international market. This placed Brazil within the rank of the main world’s emerald producers. Mr. Sauer also founded a Museum which is an precise copy of a precious gems mine extraction. Located in the quarter of the famous Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, there you can see precious gems which value cannot be determined due to the raw state of the gems, their size and variety. This is a phenomenal visit! Amsterdam Sauer performs in a low profile and its presence in Basel is not officially represented by booths, rather by the attendance of its representatives Silvio Eisemberg & Daniel Sauer.

Technos Watch The history of Technos in Brazil began in 1956 when Centauro Importadora from Rio Grande do Sul, began representing Technos watches, with the slogan: “The most punctual Swiss of the world.” Now called TECHNOS RELÓGIOS S. Miami Through the Lens of an Artist
P
erhaps rebellion is a sign of creativity. This Taurus, known by many as Kiko Ricote, at age 12 hid himself for 3 days at the home of a friend before returning to his home under the condition of no longer being “pressured” by his family. At age 17, he decided to travel throughout Latin American countries in his old Volkswagen, a gift from his father. Being a minor, he invited a friend in order to cross the border of Colombia, and from there they traveled to Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and finally arrived in Brazil, where
he and his friend remained for six months to experience the famous carnival of Rio de Janeiro. It was the “hippie” era in which freedom of expression was the daily motto for the youngsters. (The hippie movement was a worldwide phenomenon). With profound wisdom, his parents, (natives of Madrid and Santander in Spain) understood the rebellious nature of Kiko, and helped him to fulfill his desire to know the world. Thus a new cycle began in Kiko’s life and his long, globe-trotter journey began, with the world as his destination.

A Passionate Temperament — Upon his return to Venezuela, Kiko was invited to work as a model for the Magazine L’uomo Vogue. This was his initial passport to discover a new world. Good looking people, parties, modeling, were the perfect combination for this rebellious young soul who desired a life full of challenges. Under the guidance of L’uomo Vogue’s photographer, Kiko accepted her invitation to photograph in Milan. This was the beginning of his career as an international fashion model. Together with his Brazilian friend he decided to stay in Europe

where they bought a van (a Volkswagen again) to ride throughout the old continent…a world without borders for his youth. Kiko’s first top spot was in Switzerland, and while there, he and his friend parted. In Switzerland, Kiko started his newly established career as a model, followed by Germany, among many other countries, and finally landing in Netherlands where he stayed for quite a few years. Always guided by the current girlfriend, Kiko would not think twice about departing. It this manner that he arrived in Australia, guided
again by another girlfriend in another country. In Australia, his “Hispanic ethnicity” or better saying, his longing to live within a Latin community, made him to accept a job offer in Dallas, which was not exactly what he was looking for — and then his next destination would be Miami. (This was after Europe). From Fashion Model to a Photographer at the Hokkemheim’s Car Racing — A car racing lover, together with his fiancée, Kiko decided to photograph the Hokkemheimer
car racing. With a chance to test his recently purchased zoom, he took the opportunity to photograph his fashion model fiancée on a race car. Later on, this feat became a must: models and high speed race cars. That photograph was the key to his admission into this almost impenetrable world. Then, an artist and his “unique approach” was born. The rebellious Kiko finally found his destiny: to become a commercial photographer. In his portfolio you find photographs of various countries and of a Miami that we are
not accustomed to visualize on our day to day busy lives. The texture and colors of these photos are a testimony to the artistic side of his work on different levels and technical approach. When he is focused on photographing Miami, Kiko works alone. National Geographic — His motivation to photograph a city’s landscaping was inspired by a colleague who once was collecting material for the National Geographic. After that, Kiko became interested in the day to day activities
of a city and then, he began photographing Miami’s architecture obtaining spectacular results which were followed by other photos of touristic attractions, unknown by the majority of the Miamians. Kiko is used to be called an artist but personally he believes he is more a “worker” than specifically an artist. Kiko has been involved in this sector for many years. He is knowledgeable of all levels and secrets of this profession having developed his photographer’s technique not at specialized schools but rather in this so called universe’s

apprenticeship. As such, it is very common that Kiko leaves his place at dawn, getting immersed in the silence of the dark to capture with his camera the best colors and angles of the city’s landscaping. Through his art Kiko showed his love to this city by collecting never before seen photos and publishing a book about Miami. The book is a collection of photos that shows us a city rich in colors and angles through the lens of this artist. As he works solo, he faces trouble many times as it happened in the city of Coral Gables where he was almost arrested for

photographing the city without a permit. The where he interviewed Presidents, socialites, and curious question is: what would be the reaction Latin American jet sets. When the program if he was a tourist? ended Kiko decided to settle in Miami. At that time when he was already a seasoned Moving to Miami — When he was working commercial photographer. After 21 years for Univision he was invited to be the anchor- his portfolio includes highly sophisticated presenter and interviewer for the program works. For 3 years he traveled as an A Salvador Dali’s Touch — Kiko’s rebellion interviewer for the Univision TV channel finds inner peace when he channels his energy
to create what he produces in his Studio-Agency in Coral Gables. With plans to live one hundred years (his father is 98), Kiko is tireless with his lenses, and is conscious that his body is a temple. With that in mind he only eats fish, seeds and lettuces. His recently created 10 sins,
(his introduction to advertising agencies) are a clear and live example of his “Dalinian” creativity. On a simple visit to his website one can see his funny, ironic side, and be amazed with a work collection that shows his great deal of creativity. He uses himself and his family to create funny pictures of everyday life. A visit to his web site also shows the art-déco work approach of this restless and voracious artist. On various themes of his work we find the signature Kikor, where quality and creativity walk hand in hand nourished by many years of photography
experience in various spheres and dimensions, without geographical barriers. Kiko is an adventurer by nature. Having worked for several of the world’s most recognized advertising agencies such as, McCann-Erickson, Young & Rubican, to list a few, he made a name for himself and earned his place in the sun! Kiko is now a mature commercial photographer, however his artistic side is alive when it comes to Miami, and his love to this city. n

In an opposition to the universal orthodoxy of appearance, the dissimilarities of race and culture generated in the geographical and mundane pluralities, a diversity in conceptual aesthetics. Each race has its own beauty concept which experiences mutations according to the idiosyncrasies and philosophies of each era. Still, within the same race, each individual has his or her own concept which varies according to personality, culture and sensibility which are determined by an individual’s peculiar ways of perceiving, conceiving, feeling the world, and ability to reason and judge. However large is one’s understanding of harmony and beauty, a plastic surgeon faces a big limitation as if compared to those of a painter, a sculptor, a poet, for whom, space, as it pertains to what his creativity can translate, is not restricted. We are slaves to physical appearance and anatomy and many times we feel frustrated because by dealing with a human being to add or to take — is more subject to the laws of the human body than to our creative force because besides of facing such limitations of anatomic order, we are before a being who thinks, rationalizes — chooses his God.

he medical field I embraced put me face-to-face with the human being on a permanent quest of identification with his own image. As with every product of the human knowledge plastic surgery did not appear from one instant to the other. Its origin is millenary as references of surgeries aimed to repair mutilations date from 4000 BC. During the last decades man significantly changed his standards of behaviors resulting in the search for eugenics. It has been noted that a regular practice of physical exercise as well as a greater deal of body exposure, have encouraged people to search for surgical procedures to reduce a series of deformities which were considered less important for the fact that they were previously less exposed. Aesthetics surgery basically aims to improve physical appearance whereas reconstructive surgery recovers a function and repairs a physical condition. Hence, aesthetics and reconstructive surgeries complement each other, becoming difficult for one to define the boundaries between them. The evaluation of the human body’s architecture besides including a thorough analysis of each of its structure and the whole balance of its elements, complements itself through an individual’s unique perception and desire.

For a human being his body is his way of identifying with the universe. A scientist and an artist may interpret the movements of the soul through body expression. The energy involved in all vital processes follows a natural flow through the body’s hard to penetrate labyrinth, until it finds an obstacle. To identify the energetic blockages and solve them is sometimes a difficult task that is nevertheless necessary. As a painter prepares his canvas and paints, a sculptor his rock, we need to prepare a being before intervening on him. A lucid body takes initiatives, which we include in the decision making process. On this long journey since remote times, Man has always searched for identifying with his equal, tribe, social group. He never desired to be apart if such divergence meant distancing from his group. His concept of beauty has always been linked to his equals; he finds greater harmony among the related similarities of his core. Nowadays, with the dissemination of information through mass communication that easily reaches even populations located at remote areas, these concepts have changed drastically. This information, sometimes excessive and fast, interferes on perceptions and emotions and seeps in as an element of rupture on a group’s conceptual structures, generating impossible

Such phenomenon creates on an individual a desire to be similar not to his or her equals, but to this or that group which economic-cultural supremacy imposes its self image. The experience accumulated by dealing with patients of various backgrounds, diverse scopes and different social groups, taught me that the suffering is the same; the human being is one only and the well-being in its intimacy is not just the result of an organic health, but it is much the meaning of coexisting in peace and harmony with one-self ’s image. A distinguished characteristic of the human being is his presentation as the species that serves as a bridge between the animals and the divine in a mixture of biological limitation — to

be for pain and death — and unlimited desire — to be imaginary and imaginable. Hence, the aspiration for the fullness, the absolute, the archetype kingdom of beauty and pure shapes, this, besides being much desired is also much unattainable. Poets, artisans and other artists all inhabit creative areas in which plastic surgery has its place because they are all creative beings involved on the same process and on a quest to reach to the pure forms. In the western tradition, Faust’s myth reminds Man of his limited condition and eternal quest for beauty, immortality, eternity and the absolute. In other words, eternal youth, love fountain and a “lost paradise” is an ever, constant desire. From a patient’s point of view, the plastic surgeon is a “faustian” character, an apprentice, a sorcerer, a “quasi” magician, because of his aspiration for transcendence and perfection for his creation: his own patient. It is through this web of creativity and complicity built between the surgeon and the patient that both can reach the coveted result. n

rom Brasilia — The government is making a big fuss around this “finding” that the U.S. government is monitoring data and documents from President Dilma Roussef and other members of the Brazilian government. The president, the ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs displaced their discontent by announcing in a press conference that they have demanded an explanation from the American government for what they consider a breach of national sovereignty. Well, only the comrades that govern our country believe that in our modern world locked secrets may still exist. With the new and advanced technologies all that exists can be monitored. General Medici, while president, once said that “after the invention of the xerox machine there are no more secrets in this world”. Imagine that he did not even dream about today’s technological paraphernalia. The Americans have knowledge of anything that happens in this planet. In 1963, we visited a cotton plantation located in the State of

Arizona. We were several journalists. In a situation room, one of the hosts asked one of us for the place of birth. After the response, he pushed a button and on a screen, it appeared the name of that municipality along with a complete report about its population, income, and the total cotton produced there in that year and on previous years. Instead of whining, let’s also enter the monitoring club of the scouts of the world, a feat that won’t be possible especially if we consider our communications continue to be transmitted through foreign satellites. Finally Only after its third attempt our Naval War succeeded to sell as junk iron the destroyer “Pernambuco” which served to the navy from 1989 to 2004. The ship has 126 meters in length with capacity for 3,500 ton. It went to auction three times. In April 2012 nobody was willing to pay the minimum bid of R$537 million. There are suspicious that his death was caused by poisoning at the command of the repressive military junta though the official death cause has been known to be by a heart attack. By request of his family his remains will be examined by the Institute of Criminology of the Federal Police in Brasilia. Very Expensive Sony announced that its next launching, the video game PlayStation 4, which will be open for sale in Brazil on November 29, will cost around R$ 4.000 in the Brazilian market and the games will be sold at R$ 179 each. The Beautiful and Potent
GranTurismo MC Stradale
M
aserati has turned its beautiful and potent GranTurismo MC Stradale into a machine that is just as fast but even more practical, technically advanced and even more beautiful. Its all-new carbon-fiber bonnet not only creates high-speed downforce and improves cooling, but also means the four-seat GranTurismo MC Stradale retains almost the same dry weight as the discontinued two-seat version (1700 kg.). This means it continues to be the lightest and fastest car in the Maserati GranTurismo range, even though it now offers comfort to four adults instead of two. The ongoing development of the GranTurismo MC Stradale also proves that Maserati has not neglected the

importance of its two-door coupe range even with the world’s focus on its all-new Quattroporte model. Powered by the most potent version of Maserati’s 4.7-litre V8 engine, the GranTurismo MC Stradale hits 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 303km/h. GranTurismo MC Stradale utilizes the most powerful 460CV (338kW) version of the 4.7-litre V8 and mates this to the lightning-fast gear shifts from its six-speed electro-actuated “MC Race Shift” transaxle gearbox. Drawn from the GranTurismo Sport, this version of the classic 4.7-litre V8 benefits from diamond-like coating of its tappets and camshaft lobes as part of
Maserati’s Low Friction Program to be both powerful and fuel efficient. The transaxle gearbox layout not only helps the GranTurismo MC Stradale to retain an ideal 48:52 front-to-rear weight distribution, but also incorporates the brilliant MC Race gear shifting strategy that allows it to change to higher gears in just 60 ms, 5 times faster than a blink of an eye. The transaxle layout means that it sits in the same housing as the asymmetrical limited slip differential. The powertrain package also delivers its drivers the choice of Automatic, Sport and Race modes, with each level delivering additional rewards in the throttle response, the exhaust note and the skid-control systems. In another lesson drawn from its racing experiences, the gearbox also offers Sequential Downshifting, where the driver can simply hold the downshift paddle in while braking and allow the car to change to sequentially lower gears until the paddle is released. All of the dynamic performance the GranTurismo MC Stradale generates is backed up by some of the most powerful brakes in production, with enormous carbonceramic brake discs at all four corners. The brake master cylinder has a diameter of 27mm to add consistent power and to deliver a shorter pedal stroke than the standard car. The front brake package has 380mm x 34mm brake discs and sixpiston calipers, while the rear has 360mm x 32mm discs and four-piston calipers. It also rides four 20-inch forged alloy wheels that are lighter than the standard wheels, while Pirelli has developed its PZero Corsa tires (255/35 ZR20 at the front and 295/35 ZR20 at the rear) specifically to deliver more mid-corner grip and progression for this layout. The suspension and chassis layout enhance the already-impressive track performance of the GranTurismo MC Stradale without losing any of its abilities as a day-to-day car. Its chassis poise was developed to be easy to drive and as comfortable as possible to retain all of the inherent handling, ride and stability benefits of the GranTurismo’s long wheelbase. This long (2938mm) wheelbase is the key which unlocks the GranTurismo MC Stradale’s broad range of handling abilities across different conditions, allowing it to switch from a super-aggressive track car to a city commuter or autobahn express in the time it takes for the driver’s mood to change. It has the speed to be a road-legal racing car, with its ride height lowered by 10mm at the front and 12mm at the rear compared to the standard GranTurismo Sport, yet it has

The car has been developed specifically to be comfortable, progressive, balanced and entertaining for all drivers, while its Race mode is designed to deliver fast lap times in complete security. Another key to the delivery of this potential has been the retention of the 2012 GranTurismo MC Stradale’s aerodynamic benefits with the addition of the sculpted carbon-fiber bonnet. With lessons take directly from the Trofeo and GT4 racing programs, the bonnet contains an air inlet vent and two hot air extraction vents and delivers the twin benefits of reducing weight and adding 25 percent more frontal downforce at 140 km/h. Developed from both track feedback and complex computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research, the new bonnet adds high-speed stability without increasing drag, largely by relieving under-bonnet pressure. The new carbon-fiber engine cover joins a host of other Trofeo-derived aerodynamic updates that add high-speed stability and efficiency through the air. These include a deep front splitter integrated into the front bumper, deep functional side skirts, a re-profiled rear bumper and a pronounced rear lip spoiler on the boot. All of these units combine as one integrated aerodynamic device to use the entire length of the car to generate downforce and to refocus the air from the engine and brake cooling systems into areas of maximum downforce and minimum turbulence. Its black grille and the red accents on the Trident mark it as one of Maserati’s MC
range even to casual observers, but some of the biggest developments have been inside the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale, where four lightweight seats replace the two seats from the discontinued 2010 two-seat version. Front seats utilize carbon fiber back to achieve their low weight and also cater for Maserati’s traditional luxury with a combination of leather and Alcantara trims. All four seats also have integrated head restraints for safety and support. The standard trims are soft black. The seats can be delivered with grippy Alcantara with “drilled” perforations to achieve a stylish, practical finish, coupled with red stitching to match the accents on the grille’s Trident. The Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale has three steering wheel options, all of which have multi-function buttons and a flat-bottomed section on the circumference. They can be delivered in full leather, a combination of leather and Alcantara or a combination of leather and carbon-fiber. To continue its more aggressive interior theme, the Maserati GranTurismo MC’s gearshift paddles are longer than those in other GranTurismos to facilitate easier gear shifting in more demanding driving situations, and come in concert with drilled alloy pedals. n

The range of colors available for the Roadster has been supplemented with a very light, metallic blue color, Azzuro Thetis, whose tone varies with the angle of the light. This color recalls the shade of the extraordinarily beautiful 1968 Miura Roadster, and both highlights and reinforces the lines of the vehicle by adding strength and dynamism. Even the interior has a new look. The use of leather called Sabbia Nefertem highlights the superb hand-made craftsmanship of the upholstery from Sant’ Agata Bolognese and is a perfect match for the exterior in Azzuro Thetis. Finally, the new Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster also features new Dione 20”/21” rims with a daring, aggressive look. Crafted in light forged aluminum, they lower the weight of the vehicle by 10 Kg as compared with the standard set of rims. The new Aventador LP700-4 Roadster boasts record performance. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3 seconds flat and has a maximum speed of some 350 km/h. These numbers, combined with a drive train featuring a centrally located, 6.5 liter aspirated V12 generating 700 hp, an ISR 7-speed gearbox and push-rod suspension make the new Aventador Roadster a unique super sports car with no direct competition. Of course the Roadster’s V12 also includes a cylinder deactivation system when the engine is working at partial capacity, while the innovative, instant Stop & Start system includes high-performance capacitors known as supercaps to awaken the engine. This is an absolute first in the super sports car segment. In 2013 the Art Basel show in Miami Beach will feature 258 leading international galleries, drawn from 31 countries across North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The show presents artwork ranging from Modern masters to the latest contemporary works and includes, for the first time in Miami Beach, a sector dedicated to editioned works. Art Basel in Miami Beach, whose Lead Partner is UBS, will take place at the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 5 to December 8, 2013.

The 2013 Miami Beach show asserts again its status as the premier destination for galleries from the United States and Latin America, with nearly half of this year’s exhibitors coming from those regions. USCIS administers the Immigrant Investor Program, also known as “EB-5,” created by Congress in 1990 to stimulate the U.S. economy through job creation and capital investment by foreign investors. Under a pilot immigration program first enacted in 1992 (and regularly reauthorized since), a number EB-5 visas are set aside for investors in “Regional Centers” designated by USCIS based on proposals for promoting job creation and economic growth in high unemployment or rural areas. What is a Regional Center? A Regional Center is defined as any economic entity, public or private, which is involved in the promotion of economic growth, improved regional productivity, job creation and increased domestic capital investment. The organizers of a project seeking the “Regional Center” designation from USCIS must submit a proposal, supported by economically and statistically valid forecasting tools, showing: • How the regional center plans to focus on a defined geographical region within the United States. The proposal must explain in detail how the regional center will promote economic growth in that region. • How, in verifiable detail (using economic models in some instances), jobs will be created directly or indirectly through capital investments made in accordance with the regional center’s business plan. • The amount and source of capital committed to the regional center and the promotional efforts made and planned for the business project or development. • How the regional center will have a positive impact on the regional or national economy. A range of different real estate projects can qualify for a regional center. Examples include shopping malls, hotels, mixed use real estate developments, warehouse distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, and business incubators. Because the key thrust of the Regional Centers is to create jobs, many Regional Centers are sponsored by or work extensively with local governments in a form of public-private partnership, but this is not a requirement. 80 InReview Winter 2014
Capital Investment Requirements Capital means cash, equipment, inventory, other tangible property, cash equivalents and indebtedness secured by assets owned by the alien entrepreneur, provided that the alien entrepreneur is personally and primarily liable and that the assets of the new commercial enterprise upon which the petition is based are not used to secure any of the indebtedness. All capital shall be valued at fair-market value in United States dollars. Assets acquired, directly or indirectly, by unlawful means or criminal activities shall not be considered appropriate capital for investment purposes. Note: Investment capital cannot be borrowed. Required minimum investments are: • General. The minimum qualifying investment in the United States is $1 million. • Targeted Employment Area (High Unemployment or Rural Area). The minimum qualifying investment either within a high-unemployment area or rural area in the United States is $500,000. Importantly, in addition to the amount of investment, an EB-5 applicant must show proof of creation of ten (10) U.S. full time jobs as a result of their investment. If their petition is approved, they will be granted a residency, also known as a green card in the United States. But this residency is “conditional” and valid initially for two years only. At the end of the two year period, they must show proof that the full investment has been made and that the jobs have been created for a permanent green card to be granted. The EB-5 program is a significant initiative that has created a rare commodity in the world of investments – a “win-win” scenario. It is appealing to investors as a path to U.S. residency, and a boon to entrepreneurs as a powerful catalyst for foreign investment. It is an underused business opportunity that, when used to its full extent, can lead to financial gain as well and the fulfilled aspiration of the “American Dream”. Be aware of EB-5 Visa Program Scams The Securities and Exchange Commission is warning international investors of potential
scams set up to appear as valid offerings through the EB-5 visa program, but which are fraudulent. The program is popular with property developers, who see EB-5 as a way to attract foreign investors. But the SEC and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services are prosecuting companies that allegedly abused the system. The SEC is “aware of investment scams targeting foreign nationals who seek to become permanent lawful U.S. residents through the Immigrant Investor Program (“EB-5”),” the agency reported. “In close coordination with USCIS, which administers the EB-5 program, the SEC has taken emergency enforcement action to stop allegedly fraudulent securities offerings made through EB-5.” “The fact that a business is designated as a regional center by USCIS does not mean that USCIS, the SEC, or any other government agency has approved the investments offered by the business, or has otherwise expressed a view on the quality of the investment,” the SEC warns. “The SEC and USCIS are aware of attempts to misuse the EB-5 program as a means to carry out fraudulent securities offerings.” Therefore, it is very important to seek the advice of an experienced, licensed Immigration Attorney before making any investment in an offering promising residence in the United States. A qualified Immigration Attorney specialized in EB-5 visa applications will be able to guide the investor away from any fraudulent offerings and in the direction of a sound investment that will also have the ability to confer lawful permanent U.S. resident status on the investor and his family. New buildings in downtown Miami are being designed by renowned architects and designers rivaling the best condominiums in the world. Celebrities, royalty and the “who’s who” of the rich and famous around the globe own real estate in Miami and a lot of them are calling it their home.
Real estate prices are still low in comparison to other sought after locations world wide making it very accessible to many. The result has been a clear example of supply and demand over the past two and a half years, inventory has dwindled and as a result prices have steadily climbed. This has fueled another construction boom and the market shows no signs of stopping. Although prices have gone up significantly over the past few years, there is still more growth potential as we still in many areas have not reached the 2005-2007 all time highs of the first boom. Miami and Miami Beach are still a sound investment for those wanting the ultimate lifestyle but not to pay the ultimate price. The housing crash which started towards the end of 2007 and
was in full swing in 2008 lasted for almost 4 years nationwide and as a whole it is now slowly recovering. But the market in Miami and niche markets like Miami Beach have seen a much faster recovery and have been growing at an impressive rate since 2011. Strong economies such as those of Brazil and Canada have fueled this recovery with buyers purchasing properties by the bundle. Economic instability in South America and Europe is also fueling this new real estate boom. People with means in such countries look to Miami as a haven where they can safely keep their money invested in real estate for the long term. Others view Miami and Miami Beach as the ultimate vacation destination and purchase property as a second home. If you haven’t been to Miami or to its beautiful beaches, now is a better than ever time to visit. And who knows, maybe the city will work its magic on you! Miami Market Report In the last quarter of 2012, we saw condo home prices climb to a median price high of $484,000 when inventory was at its lowest of approximately 1,650 condos on the market. After a drastic uptick in November 2012, prices dropped to a median of $457,000 and then seem to have plateaued at the end of the calendar year, with just over 2,080 condos on the market. In the first quarter of 2013 we see prices starting to go up again as there has been a slight dip in the available inventory, fluctuating the median price upwards. With the continued decrease of inventory to a low of approx. 1,983 units, we see the inverse relationship with prices, which have risen to $474,000 during the 3rd quarter. Inventory has begun to slowly rise, thus stabilizing the median list price to a seasonal adjusted $464,000. We also see a much less volatile price trend in the condo market, with a steady move up to increasing prices throughout the year. A leading indicator of the real estate market is the number of homes taking a
price reduction, expressed in a % of the inventory. This indicator will also support the strength of the increasing median price. Starting in September of 2012 we saw 29.8% of the inventory was taking price reduction and still not sold, the national average was 38%. We’ve had a hot year for housing. Demand is high and inventory low. Price reductions as of second quarter 2013 are at 28% nationally and 25.5% locally. Pent up demand has consumers buying homes more aggressively than sellers expected. Due to the low inventory in 2013 prices have continued to rise and therefore the price reduction on inventory reached its lowest of 6% in May. However we see inventory slowly but surely increase in the 3rd quarter and the price reduction going up to around a 6.4% around the month of August. n

Almost 300 years of history behind the scenes The island of St Maarten/Saint Martin was originally home to the Arawak tribe, which populated much of the Caribbean. Europeans arrived with Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage to the New World. Since then, the island has been under Spanish, British, Dutch and French sovereignty. The current split between Dutch and French has stood since 1816. More than 300 years between both nations. The dual countries of St Maarten and Saint Martin offer a calm, relaxed atmosphere as well as a myriad of things to see and do. Here are just a few ideas: Visit the beaches. The ocean in St Maarten, has a unique and transparent blue color. It is a blue that you find only in this island. St Maarten/St Martin’s 37 beaches are some of the most lovely in the Caribbean. Explore the Butterfly Farm. Interact with hundreds of colorful butterflies under a mesh canopy. Shop for local crafts and French and Dutch duty-free goods. Dining and shopping on St Maarten/Saint Martin Eating and drinking is something of a national past time in both St Maarten and Saint Martin. There are more than 300 restaurants on this small island. The fare ranges from traditional Caribbean, French and Dutch cuisine to Indonesian food (a holdover from the Dutch colonial days) and even fast food. The island also favors Chinese cuisine, with more than 40 Chinese eateries. Shops abound in both the Dutch capital of Philipsburg and the French capital of Marigot. Front Street in Philipsburg is the island’s main shopping street and shops offer a large

selection of jewelry, cosmetics, cameras and liquor. In Marigot, the open-air market offers a variety of good quality craft items. The shops in town offer largely imported French goods, such as perfume, crystal and wine, as well as resort clothing and accessories. Shops on both sides of the island are generally closed on Sundays and for two hours around lunch time. Getting there Getting to St Maarten/Saint Martin is easy. Princess Juliana International Airport, located on the western side of St Maarten offers nonstop flights to 13 U.S. and Canadian cities, including Toronto, Montreal, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Miami. The airport serves more than 1.6 million passengers annually. Visitors from the United States and Canada need only bring their valid passport for entry into either country. Visitors from other countries should check with the St Maarten/ St. Martin Visitors Bureau. Traveling between the Dutch and French sides of the island is a non-event, with no formal border crossing and just a sign to advice travelers that they are leaving one area and entering another. Where to Stay St Maarten and Saint Martin offer a vast array of accommodations, in all price ranges. Just a few of the best are listed below: La Samanna — One of the most deluxe resorts in the Caribbean, La Samanna (on the French side) offers a secluded beach, 55 acres of gardens and private guest villas. Grand Case Beach Resort — One of the nicest resorts on the French side of the island. Sonesta Bay Beach Resort — A moderatelypriced, beachfront resort, located just outside of Philipsburg. Divi Little Bay Beach Resort — Located just north of the airport on the Dutch side, this moderately-priced resort is equidistant to both Marigot and Philipsburg.
