T
he hype created by R & R Partners “What Happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” succeeded with brilliance establishing the identity of this tourist town. Vegas represents the freedom that we all need from time to time. Cosmopolitan with rates for all, Vegas has undergone many phases to achieve the stature of the final destination for tourism. This curious unparalleled city was born from the concept of an Italian Mafia hit man, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel who partnered with Lucky Luciano, mobster from the “La Famiglia” of New York. It is not a fact mentioned much these days, but without a doubt, Vegas owes much to many. In conjunction with the Mafia members, Howard Hughes, the legendary character of American aviation in the 50’s, invested much of his fortune into real estate. With his entry into the scenario, Vegas slowly began to change its image when celebrities, politicians and the high society began to visit. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. were entertainers that helped make the city the “Show Business” destination as it is known today. This edition is dedicated to Las Vegas, for all that this city has evolved into from its transformation to a modern day tourist mecca with something spectacular for everyone. Vegas does not have a parallel in the world and is one of the destinations preferred by Brazilians. Gaming is still banned in Brazil. This year, Vizcaya celebrates 100 years, and its editorial relates the story of Miami’s “Golden Age” on “millionaires’ row” as Brickell Avenue was formerly known. The brilliant quote describes the spirit of Las Vegas, the city of light, entertainment, and nightlife; Vegas has an interesting history. This tag intellectually established the bond between visitors and the city -- Freedom to do and to be whatever you want and to leave behind all the bad stuff. It is a city without memory. Vegas undoubtedly represents the pathway to freedom that we all need from time to time. BIRTH OF VEGAS – 187 YEARS BEFORE The name Vegas was given to the area back in the year of 1829 by a Mexican scout named Raphael Rivera. Raphael was

That valley at the time contained artesian wells surrounded by extensive green areas. Founded on May 15, 1905, Las Vegas, located in Nevada’s Mojave Desert, is a town famed for its nonstop energy. Casinos are open 24-hours with entertaining options for all tastes and people who visit this city from everywhere. In 2015, there were 42.31 million visitors from all over the world. The Strip is the central Avenue of Vegas with 4 miles largely exhibiting theme hotels such as the Venetian with its Grand Canal, which may transport the visitor to Italy, or luxury resorts such as Bellagio, with its iconic dancing fountains and casinos. Vegas has no competition in the world. It is a city with apparently no limits. Wealthy people worldwide visit the city to play large amounts of money; for them, there is a 5-star welcome. The casinos know way before their arrival, who’s who. The level of hospitality is related to the amount of money that casinos expect to cash in from its celebrity visitors. It is another world established by large bank accounts and its owners. In some cases, casinos even send their executive jet to transport “the rich and famous.” The limousines, the best suites with a butler, providing anything or everything that they need or want. The word “limit” does not exist for this kind of tourist. The history of Vegas long ago has established that this city welcomes everybody looking for short vacations, plus this is an entertainment place. A unique city with visitors from everywhere from Latin America to Europe, Asia, you name it, Vegas is one of the preferred stops in the United States for Brazilians.

VEGAS, AND THE ITALIAN MAFIA The Flamingo, the first luxury resort on the “strip,” was the concept of “Bugsy” Siegel, the Italian mobster and a trusted hit man associate of Charles “Lucky” Luciano, an organized Capo from New York. He envisioned Las Vegas with luxury resorts, free gambling and no taxes. What else could be more perfect? The mobs saw the opportunity to develop the perfect scenario for their organized crime. At the time Vegas was the right definition of a “Sin City.” A 50-year relationship between Las Vegas and the organized crime turned the city into today’s famous tourist destination. The Flamingo Resort, the first of its kind on the strip, was entirely financed by “Lucky Luciano” and the Mafia mob from New York. Later more than a dozen Mafia families in the United States started to invest in the hotels and casinos. It can’t be denied that Vegas is the result of “Bugsy’s” vision. It is valid to say that the Jewish Mafia investors, Will Max Schwartz, Mayer Lansky, along with others, disputed the city with the Italians. THE LEGEND OF HOWARD HUGHES VEGAS-BEFORE AND AFTER HUGHES Certainly, the name of Howard Hughes is well known, especially since Leonardo DiCaprio’s interpretation of Hughes

in The Aviator. Well, Howard Hughes was an eccentric hero, an American entrepreneur and financier who was extremely wealthy and a legend hero of American aviation. This history is the beginning of a new Las Vegas around the years of 1956 to 1969. At the time, Hughes decided to move to Vegas and stayed at the Desert Inn Hotel. After a while, Hughes purchased the entire hotel. By doing so, he extended his financial empire to real estate. Howard’s political connections quickly made him one of the most powerful men in Las Vegas. With an investment of $300 million dollars, Las Vegas upgraded to a tourism destination. There is a Vegas before and a Vegas after Hughes. Because of Hughes, the image of Las Vegas went from its Wild West roots to a cosmopolitan city. The rich and famous started to visit Vegas. Little by little Vegas was establishing its real future nature --The Entertainment City. Undoubtedly, the city owes

According to 2014 statistics Vegas ended up with over $5 billion of their visitors’ money, altogether or an average of over $630,000 a day. VIZCAYA CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
T
he history of Vizcaya reflects and provides insight to the histories of both the nation and Miami. Built between 1914 and 1922—and employing an impressive ten percent of the population of Miami over the course of those years—Vizcaya is one of the country’s most intact remaining estates from the Gilded Age, when the nation’s wealthiest industrialists built lavish homes inspired by European examples. James Deering, Vizcaya’s owner, was retired from his position as Vice-President of International Harvester when he teamed up with his artistic advisor, Paul Chalfin, to create Vizcaya. Due to health issues, Deering had been advised to seek out a warmer climate in which to spend his winters, and chose a bayfront site in Miami. His parents had already settled in Coconut Grove, and his half-brother, Charles, who had a home in Buena Vista, would soon develop an estate in Cutler. Deering purchased the first 130 acres of Vizcaya’s 180 acres from Mary Brickell in 1912, just sixteen years after the incorporation of the City of Miami. In the years before and after World War I, Miami’s Brickell Avenue became known as “Millionaire’s Row.” The

most beautiful homes on Brickell were soon eclipsed by Vizcaya. Vizcaya’s Main House was intended to appear as an Italianate villa that had stood for 300 years. Innovative building techniques and design styles were used, incorporating antique Italian marble with native coral rock. The landscape combined elements of Italian and French garden design adapted to the subtropical setting. Shells found in Florida and the Caribbean decorate many features in the gardens, including the grottos and bridges. On December 25, 1916, Deering celebrated the completion of the Main House with a party at which his guests dressed as Italian peasants. Although Vizcaya was designed to look old, Deering was a man whose family’s fortune came from industrialization. As such, he introduced the most modern technologies and features to his home. For example, the Main House is an early example of poured-in-place concrete and boasted revolutionary technology including two elevators, a central vacuuming system, and an electric telephone exchange system. In addition to the collection of art, furnishings and objects he gathered throughout Europe, Deering was also a patron of contemporary art and commissioned several prominent artists to create work specifically for Vizcaya. Deering enjoyed his beloved Vizcaya for less than nine years. He passed away on September 18, 1925, while returning to the

Charles died in 1927, and Vizcaya eventually passed to his daughters. A restoration campaign took place in 1933 under Chalfin. The estate had its first opening as a privately owned museum in 1935. The estate’s heirs conveyed 130 acres of Vizcaya’s property to the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine which built Mercy Hospital, a school and housing in the 1940s; the remaining 50 acres, including the Main House, gardens and Village, were conveyed to Dade County in 1951. Included was the donation of the estate’s substantial furnishings and art collection on the condition that Vizcaya be used as a public museum in perpetuity. In March 1953 Vizcaya opened to the public as the Dade County Art Museum. Today, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an internationally renowned accredited museum and a National Historic Landmark. The museum is known for its rich history, architecture, gardens, and art and living collections, and it retains one of the only remaining native forests in Miami. Vizcaya’s mission is to preserve the estate and to engage the public in learning through the arts, history and the environment. Families participate in many programs that share Vizcaya’s history in fun and engaging ways. Members enjoy special tours and access. Volunteers help keep the gardens and mangrove coastline beautiful. Supporters give generously to ensure the protection and preservation of Vizcaya. A trip to Vizcaya transports visitors to another time. The inventor of the modern chronograph In founding his workshop in the Swiss Jura in 1884, Léon Breitling chose to devote himself to an exclusive and demanding field: that of chronographs and timers. These precision instruments were intended for sports, science and industry. Thanks to its high-quality products and its constant quest for innovation, the brand accompanied the boom of competitive sports and of the automobile – as well as the first feats of the aviation pioneers. ot many companies can lay claim to a hundred years of history, but aerospace giant Boeing is looking forward to celebrating its centenary in 2016. When William Boeing saw a piloted flying machine for the first time in 1909, it launched a curiosity for the flight that would one day make him a household name. He purchased and learned to fly an aircraft in 1915 but realized he could manufacture an improved version of his design. In June 1916 he built his very first aircraft, the Model 1 seaplane, and decided to make aviation his business. Boeing designed, manufactured and sold seaplanes to the US Navy during World War One. The end of the conflict marked a lean spell for aircraft production.The company then decided to produce furniture to survive. The 1920s saw Boeing build seaplanes, military fighters, and for postal mail delivery. Boeing Airplane Company fast becoming a leading light in a rapidly developing aviation industry. By 1938 Boeing opened up world travel with legendary aircraft like the Boeing 314 Clipper flying boat, carrying Pan-Am

Boeing’s technological expertise saw the company’s equipment reaching even greater heights when they began working with NASA, initially providing rocket technology for the Apollo space program and the Space Shuttle, later becoming the first contractor for the International Space Station. During the last century, Boeing has continually released innovative designs for both the military and civilian world. They have significantly improved the speed, safety, and comfort of

oday the America’s Cup is a global event featuring high-tech hydro foiling; wing-sailed Catamarans that are capable with speeds of more than 40 knots. The crews are elite athletes contending with the high physical extremes of sailing such high-performance boats. The competition was equally fierce in 1851 when an American syndicate brought a radical new yacht to English shores. The schooner called America, was invited to compete in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s annual Isle of Wight regatta to win the ‘£100 Mug.’ America coasted home to victory with an eighteen-minute lead. Legend states that Queen Victoria, watching this unparalleled winner cross the finish line, asked who was second. She was told, ‘Your majesty, there is no second.’ Known as the ‘Auld Mug,’ the sterling silver cup (manufactured by Garrard of London, the world’s oldest jewelers) was entrusted to the New York Yacht Club (NYYC). As a “perpetual challenge trophy to promote friendly competition among nations” alongside

Igualmente feroz foi a competição de 1851, quando um sindicato americano trouxe um iate radical à costa inglesa. A escuna chamada América, foi convidada para competir na regata da ilha de Wight sob o nome de Royal Yacht Squadron quando venceu o Troféo ‘£100. a ‘Deed of Gift’ that still provides the basis for the Cup’s rules and regulation. Adopting the name of the winning schooner, the America’s Cup quickly attracted challengers hoping to return the trophy to Great Britain. From inception, the event showcased the latest developments in racing yacht design. Sir Thomas Sopwith, renowned aircraft manufacturer and designer of the legendary World War I fighter’s plane, the Sopwith Camel, used his aeronautical expertise to advance the design of his challenging J-Class yachts Endeavour and Endeavour II in 1934 and 1937. Sopwith launched an aeronautical link that remains today but failed to take the Cup. Racing ceased during World War II and resumed in 1958. The NYYC successfully defended the Cup against challengers for a phenomenal 132 years. Growing global interest in the event necessitated the launch of a Challenger series with the winner going through to race the Defender for the America’s Cup. t this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed Lord March, host of the legendary motorsports event, could not resist the opportunity to drive the Bugatti Chiron1 up the famous ”Hill Climb“ track. More than 55,000 enthused spectators saw him drive on the narrow 1.16 mile (1.866 kilometres) course on Sunday accompanied by British race driver and Le Mans winner Andy Wallace. Lord March said after the Chiron drive: “Regarding an overall automotive experience that was at the very top. Unbelievable power, yet unbelievably drivable – a full rush for all the senses.” First public appearance of the new Bugatti super sports car in the United Kingdom Chiron presented at legendary hill climb Piloted by British racing driver and Le Mans winner Andy Wallace Motto of the event: “Full Throttle - The Endless Pursuit of Power” Wolfgang Dürheimer: “The Chiron embodies the motto of this year’s event like no other production super sports car.” The venue for its first public appearance in the United

Kingdom could hardly be more appropriate for the Bugatti Chiron. The motto of this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed is “Full Throttle - The Endless Pursuit of Power”. The Bugatti super sports car with 1,500 PS and a top speed of 420 km/h limited for road use is being presented at the legendary hill climb – piloted by British racing driver and Le Mans winner Andy Wallace. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is being held from June 23 to 26, 2016. “As the most powerful and fastest production super sports car in the world, the Chiron embodies the motto of this year’s event like no other car in its class,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “We are pleased to be able to present the Chiron at this highly traditional event as its UK premiere and would like to thank Lord March for his hospitality.”Andy Wallace, who has been an official Bugatti driver since 2011, will pilot the Chiron at the Goodwood hill climb this weekend. The former British racing driver and Le Mans
legend is looking forward to the occasion. “It is a great honour for me to drive this exceptional vehicle at such a fantastic event, especially since this will be its premiere in my home country. I’m sure this will be a highlight of the festival.” Bugatti is currently preparing for the start of series production of the 1,500 PS Chiron at the company’s headquarters in Molsheim, Alsace. The super sports car is to be produced in a limited series of 500 vehicles. More than 200 customers have already ordered their Chiron and the first vehicle is due to be delivered to a customer in the autumn of 2016. Since 1993, the Goodwood Festival of Speed has been one of the international highlights in the calendar for motorsports enthusiasts and fans of racing cars of all vintages. Every year in June, about 200,000 visitors flock to Goodwood House to the north of Chichester (West Sussex). The highlight of the event is the famous hill climb; the vehicles entering this event drive over a 1.16 mile (1.86 km) course with nine bends over
the hill at Goodwood. The 23 Festival of Speed is being held from June 23 to 26, 2016. The Bugatti stand is near to the Supercar Paddock. n

S
implicity. Purity. Perfection. Identity: keywords that describe acclaimed chef and restaurateur Costas Spiliadis’ culinary philosophy, grounding him solidly at the forefront of the Cuisine of Naturalism. The idea of “natural cookery” is hardly new; it’s the way everybody in the world prepared food until the advent of 19th and 20th Century Western cuisine (think classicist giants like Carême and Escoffier). Defined loosely, the Cuisine of Naturalism is one where food arrives on the plate without looking processed at all. Diners know what they are putting in their mouths because transparency rules. Unlike molecular cuisine, there is no artificial manipulation or transformation by

the chef, but rather a resolute and absolute respect of the ingredients, their terroirs and how they are produced. Because its boundaries are not dogmatic, the Cuisine of Naturalism allows for reasonable interpretation and consequently for chefs to leave their own, unique imprimatur. Whether its Chef Jiro Ono, the legendary sushi master and owner of 3-star Michelin Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo; or Chefs René Redzepi (of iconic Noma in Copenhagen) and Mathias Dahlgren in Stockholm, both leading advocates of “Nordic Naturalism” or “New Nordic”; or Alain Passard’s brilliant “cuisine végétale” at 3-star Michelin L’Arpège in Paris – each plays within the rules of Naturalism but has carved out his own distinct, proprietary and celebrated path.
For Chef Spiliadis, the objective has always been food in its purest form -- simple, perfect, unadorned – utilizing the freshest, most pristine ingredients and applying precision in cooking so that interference with nature is minimized. The result: healthy dishes whereby the distinct flavors and nutritional values of the best ingredients are preserved. The search for clarity of taste, where freshness is relied on instead of fat for flavor, is paramount. He preaches a food culture based on the fact that ingredients are so beautiful that any attempt to tamper with them is philosophically and pragmatically wrong. Every ingredient has a purpose, less is definitely more: it’s the art of simplicity in the search for perfection – an ancient Hellenic ideal,
scientific to the core and espousing exactitude, which manifested itself throughout the vast Greek empire not only in cooking, philosophy, politics and art but very prominently in architecture (the Parthenon is a shining example). Within the culinary pantheon of Naturalism, Chef Spiliadis is the preeminent carrier of the flag of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine.
