Purpose means the reason for which something is done, created, or exists. From a hotel business perspective, there are three purposes upon which to build your own brand

Profit is perhaps the purpose for the benefit of investors or shareholders.

Promise is an expression of purpose for the benefit of the customer.

Care is an expression of purpose for the benefit of tourists and visitors humanity.

operations A strong brand purpose statement can make a positive impression on consumers, who are apt to hold a business to account for the values and missions it propounds.

To start defining a brand’s purpose, we need to shift our mindset to consider the emotional connection your brand will have with your audience — the reason why your brand should exist or was created. For example, was it to create a new concept in which it creates a niche on the area or region by making the lives of your end users more enjoyable, attractive, different from others or unique, better or easier.

Here are some known Brand Archetypes:

It’s fundamental that when building a sustainable business we require to be making a profit and deliver on a brand promise, any research shows that those hotels and resorts that embrace a higher purpose, can connect deeply with investors / stakeholders and drive greater organizational performance, both of which contribute towards building a strong positive reputation , image and profits.

A declaration of purpose shows what you as an hotelier , owner and investor with your own brand believe in; once the cause is aligned and deeply expresses what it stands for as a brand it will not only help employees answer the questions but gives the trust that the consumer/buyer etc requires. Most of the successful brands have compelling purpose statements about the cause they believe in.

You should have in mind that:

CCA Looking at Major Expansion of Prestigious Private Clubs in Eastern Europe

Robert Fadel is the Project Development Director of CCA International, The Club Company, which is one of the leading international hospitality companies engaged in the development and management of prestigious private members clubs, golf clubs and country clubs in Asia, Europe and the Middle East since 1982.

The company has a professional team of multinational specialists in international Club, Golf and Boutique Hotel Management.

Fadel sits down with TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE to talk about CCA’s expansion plans in cities like Budapest, Bucharest, Belgrade, Ljubljana and Bratislava and is now looking with great interest at Tirana where there are no private business clubs of high caliber as yet.

40 years experience spread over several continents and cultures. Can you share with us your best achievements and experiences?

I have no preferred country that I have worked in during my career. I have enjoyed the multi-cultural experience and managing in changing environments. Not always easy however very interesting and self-developing.

Being your background in Hospitality, what do you love about CCA?

My entire international hotel experience (well over 40 years) has given me a set of very useful transferable skills to the club industry and other businesses. We are talking about superior service standards, exceptional cuisine and member satisfaction being key to the success of a private members club. When managed well, this in turn results in a heathy bottom line very similar to the hotel business. The only difference between the club and the

hotel business is that you are dealing with membership and not transient guests. Mediocre service in a club environment is not as forgiving as in hotels.

Can you explain briely how CCA International Limited works and what makes it one of the leading hospitality companies nowadays?

CCA’s business model has a proven track record since over four decades in developing and managing prestigious private clubs in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. What do you think people expect from the club experience like CCA today?

There are a multitude of reasons for members to join a private club. For some it is the opportunity to bring the whole family together and spend quality time with each other (e.g. at a country club), while for others it is a place to network and conduct business. Despite common membership in a single club, members’ interests and usage patterns are likely to be different. Regardless of amenities, there are certain shared attributes that provide value to a club and attracts members.

Key drivers for club expectations are personal recognition, exclusivity, privacy, comfortable and cozy ambiance, superior service standards and great food.

Meet the 2023 European Inventor Award Finalists

Recognising inventors that transform our world and our lives: European Inventor Award 2023

Munich, 9 May 2023- The European Patent Office (EPO) has announced the first 12 finalists of the European Inventor Award 2023, Europe’s top innovation prize.

“The innovation shown by this year’s finalists, in the face of the modern world’s many shared challenges, such as sustainability, the energy transition and social inequality, is a source of inspiration.

These awards celebrate their work and the progress it represents,” says EPO President António Campinos.

The winners of the 2023 edition of the European Inventor Award will be announced at a hybrid ceremony on 4 July 2023 at 12 pm CET taking place in Valencia (Spain). The ceremony will be broadcast online here

THE FINALISTS

The finalists come from a wide array of sectors. Many of their innovations aim to improve the everyday lives of people around the world and tackle society’s biggest challenges in areas such as sustainability on land, sea and even in space, energy efficiency, medical devices, food chain optimisation and mobility solutions, among others.

The 2023 finalists represent 12 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy and the United States. The independent jury is made up of former finalists, drawing on their wealth of technical, business, and intellectual property expertise. Once again, Wolfgang M. Heckl, Director General of the Deutsches Museum in Munich, is the jury chair. The jury selected the finalists from over 600 proposed candidates from around the world.

The Lifetime Achievement Award, Popular Prize and Young Inventors Prize

A key award category is the Lifetime Achievement. This year, the Lifetime Achievement category winner will be announced two weeks before the ceremony.

As from May 9, 2023, the public can participate in the European Inventor Award 2023 by voting online to decide which of the 12 finalists above should be awarded the Popular Prize. Voting will remain open until the day of the ceremony.

For the second year, the winners of the Young Inventors Prize will be announced on 23 May. The prize casts a spotlight on three ground-breaking initiatives and highlights the power of younger generations in shaping our world. Nominees must be 30 or under at the time of the award. Their initiatives must aim at using a technical solution to solve a problem within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

A look back at 50 years of European patents

In 2023 the EPO celebrates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the European patent system. When 16 countries signed the European Patent Convention in Munich on 5 October 1973, they ushered in a new era of co-operation on patents. This laid the ground for a patent system supporting economic and technological developments that have shaped our lives and continue to do so today. At this moment, Albania, referring to the World Bank statistics, has reported 7 million visitors. That is more than Israel or Cyprus gets, so, if you see the matter from this aspect, having Marriott, Hilton, InterContinental and Hyatt in a capital city is great.

TIRANA TO BE THE BEST VENUE IN THE TOWN

Takuya Aoyama, Vice President for Development at Hyatt International for Central & Eastern Europe, former USSR and the Balkans, gave an exclusive interview to TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE admitting that the construction works are taking more than expected and the reason is that the hotel aims high, so more planning and redesigning are added.

“I think the vision is to make Hyatt Regency Tirana the main destination in the town and

the best conference venue. So, that means of lot of redesigning and planning. That’s why it is taking longer. I believe the hotel will have around 300 keys and multiple F&B,” Aoyama said.

Talking about hotels built outside the Albanian capital, Aoyama thinks “the hotels outside Tirana must be small if you want to talk about not disrupting the nature or being authentic.”

Let’s start this interview by talking about Hyatt Hotel in Albania which keeps you coming back and forth in our country. At what stage are the construction works? And what can be called news at this stage? As you know, it is taking longer than everybody expected (laughing). There is a reason. It started as a refurbishment of the existing hotel but then it ended up being expanded. So, the owner is adding floors and a lot of facilities. I think the vision

is to make it the main destination in the town and the best venue for conferences and social events. So, that means of lot of redesigning and planning. That’s why it is taking longer. I believe the hotel will have around 300 keys and multiple F&B. Probably it is the only hotel which cannot be missed in the town except Rogner Hotel Tirana obviously.

The hotel will likely take another 18 months or so to open but I really want it open ahead of InterContinental (Laughing).

What will be the advantageous aspects of this Hotel in comparison with all these competitors around you? Can you list some?

It controls its own territory and is located next to the beautiful park. Other hotels really don’t.

If you have a social event, we have it all for you, the parking behind, the garden; it is a perfect wedding venue, conference venue. With 300 keys, it is the right venue. If the Albanian tourism will continue to grow at the pace of the past few years, then we will be very well positioned to take advantage of the further demand.

How are the architect, the interior designer and the owners working for this hotel which, given the renderings, looks astonishing?

There are pluses and minuses. I think the stakeholders correctly decided that the hotel, at least the façade, has to connect to the stadium. But trying to have one architectural theme across those several properties requires a lot of combinations. I think this needs extra work for the architect and the interior designer.

How sustainable do you consider your property?

I don’t feel guilty when it comes to brown field projects. If it is an existing hotel, we are using the existing footprint and utilizing the space we have. And it is an urban hotel. When we really have to think about sustainability is when we, Marriott,

or Melia or whoever want to go outside of the capital city and do something in the coastal zone or mountainous area. That’s the moment when we have to think hard and work very closely with the public sector. We and the developers and investors, are run by financial motives. Usually, we say that we are creating employment and tax revenues. But that’s not enough. Because we are intrusive by nature. Once we have a hotel in a place, which used to be a fishing village, we displace people, we change people’s lives for good or bad. And we have not given enough thought about that. If someone is going to build a resort in Albania, we should not be doing big hotels. How would you feed if you have 500 keys, let’s say. Can you produce local food and can you feed them with local produce? NO! They serve yogurt imported from France for breakfast, or, by the way, why are we

question, to a certain extent, it will change. It will streamline a few things and makes things convenient which is good. But the core of hospitality are the people. Technological novelties like ChatGPT cannot replace the things we do day in and day out, I think.

All over the world, Hyatt is introducing splashing properties. What is the success of this brand in your view? The one that makes a difference.

How far will technology transform the customer experience in your property? We know that technology makes things convenient. That goes not only to the guests but to the associates. But people deal with people in this industry and technology cannot care for you. It can make your life slightly easier, that’s all. To answer your

Hyatt growth has accelerated but still we are small. When I joined the company 15 years ago, we numbered 480 hotels but now Hyatt has more than 1250 hotels including all-inclusive properties in about 70 countries across six continents. But it took 15 years for that to happen. We have been able to maintain the focus on our strength which is upscale to luxury segments. If I say that Hyatt has 35 million loyalty members, they are Hyatt guests, they are upscale and luxury guests. We will continue to maintain that position, and we continue to grow with intent, in a disciplined way.

With 5 hotels in pipeline in Bulgaria, one in Montenegro (Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort) and another one in Serbia (Hyatt Regency Novi Sad), two in Albania (one in Tirana and another one in the South of Albania), and another one in Zadar, Croatia, I think we are creating an interesting portfolio in the Balkans.

LEAD PROGRAM INSPIRED me to Work Harder

Alda Shabani was recently assigned to manage LEAD Program Albania, part of Albanian American Development Fund (AADF).. Following some job positions in great institutions in Albania and abroad, she became part of LEAD Albania Program demonstrating a lot of enthusiasm, motivation and dedication.

“This program requires a lot of engagement in order to provide a positive and successful output which should be in the standard of the organization I am part of, and this is the reason why I should give the best of my knowledge and my work experience which is specifically 11 years of experience in Tirana, recently working for United Nations and London where I worked as a Consultant for Government sector such as Home Office or the Passport Office,” Shabani told TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE.

According to her, the LEAD Fellows network and their enthusiasm inspires her to enhance the program and continue at her best to contribute to Albania with professionalism and knowhow. “This is the philosophy of AADF as well focused on the development of a sustainable economy and a democratic society in Albania,” she said.

The LEAD Albania Program has hit 100 fellows so far. “The network of 100 alumni is a treasure for the program because as you said they are the future leaders of this country, who are equipped with the experience, know-how and personal value, able to advocate the best for our country,” Shabani concluded.

How engaging, inspiring and influencing is this position for you at this point of your career?

Thank you so much for inviting me to this interview. I’m glad to have this conversation with you about LEAD program and share my perspective as the Manager of LEAD Albania Program.

with professionalism and know-how. This is the philosophy of AADF as well focused on the development of a sustainable economy and a democratic society in Albania. Working together as a team with the same goal leads us to get motivated and inspired by each other by example. Leadership itself is about collaboration and inspiring others to do their best work and this relates to me with collaborating with all the stakeholders of the program and make sure they know I care about them.

Let’s talk about the 2022 Cohort of the LEAD Albania Program. In your view, how well are they embracing the Program showcasing their skills and mindsets?

The Cohort of 2022 of LEAD Albania is a success story even though the fellows are half way of their pathway; most of them are very well positioned in the Cabinet and are responsible for

the most important part of the core functions in the institutions. I would say that the elements of the program have made the greatest impression on the participants not only this year but throughout the years. I can mention the trust the institutions have given to AADF to assign our fellows in such important positions, in the highest levels of leadership and to believe that they will be successful. One of our fellows is part of the working group in the screening process for the Albania Access in the EU. Another one is a key point for delivering the image of Albania in the international area or to mention another fellow from this cohort who is the main person for the public communication and for the press for the Leader of the institution he is assigned.

affected the fellows’ success through their guidance based on the previous experience the mentors have within the institutions. I can confirm that within this journey they have improved their leadership skills through the process of working in this demanding environment, education component the program has which emerge better know how and demonstrate their development professionally and personally.

What are the key learning outcomes for this program, and how does it prepare students to assume leadership positions across a diversity of contexts?

This is a Leadership program and as such I can mention as learning outcomes a strong sense of identity, connections and contributions with their working environment and their world, their high level of confidence and the ability to involve learners followed by an effective communication. All these learning outcomes will be part of fellows upon the completion of the LEAD program. Also this unique experience they have been through will be reflected into their future goals and determine further actions for personal growth. To assume leadership positions means to be able to collaborate, actively participate in planned objectives and sustains projects in diversity of contexts. Where they already have done so within the program, through their interaction with their cohort peers but as well with LEAD Alumni which as mentioned earlier have reached 100 this year.

What advice do you have in terms of submitting a competitive application?

LEAD Application is engaging and requires dedication, focus and time. Based on our estimation to finalize

this application properly, it is needed 20 business hours. Having said that, it means that in order to be successful, applicants should be committed. Besides the general information required in the first steps of the application, where you have to add your generalities, education and work experience within the last 5 years, the applicant should focus on the required personal project.

This is the highlight of this application and has a direct connection with the institution the applicant aspires to work in and contribute to develop further through a new proposal, idea or objective. I would highly suggest everyone who is interested to be part of this important program to scrutinize the institution, identify what is needed, analyzes the sector he /she is interested in, what are the objectives, how do they implement the policies.

After doing so, the applicant must come with a specific proposal that relates to the institutions, to improve it and make sure to personally contribute to this change. As the competition is really high, we receive around 350 applications every year and we select around 10 fellows per year even though this number may change even in 12 or 9 based on the quality of the applications. Said that the proposal is important to be innovative and to be practical in order to be implemented.

LEAD Albania Program numbers more than 100 fellows by now. How is this Program helping in the creation of the new generation of leaders in Albania? What makes this Program so much in demand? The success of LEAD Albania is now very visible and our 100 fellows and alumni

together, make this success even more touchable. We, at AADF, measure success based on each member of the project and identify it not only during the program but as well after the program. The high level of professionalism, determination, ability, consistency and personal integrity make fellows to be identified among others in their working environment. The selection process we operate is really strict and the selection committee encompasses professionals who are able through several tasks taken by the applicants to identify the brightest ones in accordance with the program needs and mission.

The network of 100 alumni is a treasure for the program because as you said they are the future leaders of this country, who are equipped with the

experience, know-how and personal value, able to advocate the best for our country. We consider our alumni community as success as most of them are positioned in high positions in the Albanian government such as General Secretariat in the Ministries, Justice system but as well in NGO-s, private sector or academia as CEO’s or Directors. This is probably the reason behind the high demand for the program. At the same time, this high demand gives us the responsibility to provide the best of the best from this project and come with new ideas on how to improve the program and put it in a higher level. As per our expectations we set higher goals every day grateful and proud, we have archived but eager to reach higher peaks.

Dorina Patuzi is an experienced professional with in-depth knowledge and skills both in public and private entities. Along her professional experience, she demonstrated the capacity to drive change within organizations, and influence public policies with the main scope of enhancing private sector development and improving the business climate.

Dorina concluded her studies in Florence, Italy. She holds an MSC Degree in International Relations and European Studies, in Political Science. She also holds a Master in Digital Marketing in Tourism, from the European University in Rome.

During her career, she has been hosted at Women Venture Fund, in New York City for conducting a professional internship in Business & Finance, as part of AADF MIP Professional Fellowship Program.

She worked as an external lecturer on Human Rights, International Organizations, and Philosophy of Rights in different private faculties, like “Zoja e Keshillit te Mire” and Wisdom University in Tirana.

After 10 years of professional experience in the public sector, and concluding an Executive Master’s at Harvard Business School, on “How to drive Profitable Growth”, Dorina experienced broadening her skills in finance, as a Chief Financial Officer in the private sector.

Dorina, you have a consolidated career in finance and in government relations. What brought you to the LEAD Albania Program?

First, I would like to thank you for this interview and for the opportunity to share my experience so far with the audience and wider interest groups. I would say that achievements and success always require attention and active participation in programs and professional networks which aim to improve or upgrade skills. The world is becoming every day more competitive; thus, it is imperative to stay tuned with the best knowledge suppliers. In this context, when I first read about the LEAD Albania Program, I felt enthusiastic, and I realized that this program would have been part of the puzzle that I had to accomplish.

LEAD Albania program is a one-lifetime event where in every participant builds a fantastic network of professionals and meets inspiring young people; deepen self-awareness and strengthen influencing skills delivered by best trainers through a

challenging leadership training tailored only for the LEAD Albania Fellows.

Second, after 15 years of experience in private and public institutions, I decided to work within the system from another angle, following another dynamic, that of the Advisor. What is special about this experience is that while you serve as an advisor at the Cabinet, per se are political environments whose role in the administrative democratic environment is fundamental. In democratic administrative structures, political advisers can help civil servants in ministries understand the political environment in which they operate.

Considering the long experience in the civil service, in particular my work supporting foreign investors who have chosen Albania for the development of their businesses, has in return strengthened in me an evergrowing career system, while on the other hand learning how to act professionally and strategically. For the good sake, this program mainly supports senior professional officials, who have gained consolidated technical experience and who can advise on building policies and political strategies, without being imposed to have been before engaged in political sphere. Harmonizing and adapting systems of political cabinets governed by individual directives, where political advisers and civil servants work together, based on the understanding that ministers may reflect on a wide range of advice, both practical and political, to make the best decisions based on all the facts. Cooperation between the two groups depends significantly on individual professionalism and the understanding that both parties serve the same purpose, emphasizing integrity and service to the current elected government.

This vibe and the challenging feature of the program led me to the LEAD Albania and still amazes me!

What kind of skills do you aim to build on?

LEAD Albania program provides to every cohort the opportunity to get trained by one of the best leadership training centers, such as Center for Creative Leadership. Up to now, we have taken diverse training and coaching sessions, like influencing modules or key leadership and influencing challenges, developing a leadership legacy, how to build and deliver feedback. These are only some of our ‘moments’ just for you to flavor the uniqueness of this program. To be honest, I am working on influencing strategies and how to become a more resilient leader. I would like to thank this program for the insights in delivering knowledge and opening new opportunities.

The LEAD Albania experience is supported by an educational component where Fellows participate in one of the best US Universities on: European integration, public policy, decision making, foreign policy, security policy, leadership, and soft skills development.

Why did you choose the LEAD Albania Program in particular? What expectations did you have of the programme?

The Albanian-American Development Foundation for years now has consolidated a strategic portfolio with many projects and programs leading the most important sectors in the country, such as in education and leadership, cultural and ecotourism, entrepreneurship by high integrity and transparency. The current class is the 10th cohort of the program; thus, I would like to thank with great gratitude the Co-CEOs of AADF, Mr. Martin Mata and Mr. Aleksandër Sarapuli and all the team who work with

passion and commitment to perform and progress year by year the best leadership program in the country. Following my previous experience as a MIP Alumni in New York, I had the certainty of the professionalism and integrity of this program. This program has encouraged me to think optimistically and take on difficulties, to remain focused and adapt on new environment even and to learn from the accomplishments of other people. After six months now, my expectations are fully fulfilled.

What elements of the programme made the greatest impression on you? What can you say about the activities you have taken part in the context of this program?

To share my experience so far, I can mention two recent activities I took part; one is the joint event organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment in collaboration with the United Nations World

Tourism Organization which was a great success and a memorable occasion.

FESTA (Future Environmental Sustainable Tourism in Albania) was a first international tourism forum of its kind organized in Albania. A platform for a range of panels and discussions amongst policymakers, entrepreneurs, operators of hospitality and all those who contribute to the shaping of this vital industry. Focused on the current trends of sustainable travel, using insights, while exploring the transformational power of the travel industry and jointly strategize how to move forward in the road ahead.

Being among important actors who are at the forefront of the professionalism networking experience among all attendees, against a background of Albanian food, culture, music, and hospitality.

A month ago, we organized the official participation of Albania in ITB Berlin, another success which brought Albania in the center of the best international communication channels and at every level.

Therefore, one element that I would highlight is the support and the incentive that AADF provides for us. We recently started producing a weekly podcast named as Lead Up Podcast with the support of AADF. This is an initiative of the current class of Lead Albania aiming to promote and bring to the public voices of Alumni and guests relevant to the developments and AADF projects portfolio. This activity has gathered the great interest of all and we are confident of developing this Podcast furthermore.

What about your cohort of fellow participants? How would you describe this experience so far?

Fellow participants are all unique in their

diversity of experiences and contributions in the society. From the beginning, we discovered a friendly environment around us and realized that we all shared the same expectations and commitment to the program. These inspiring young people are hardworking people and motivated to make out the best of their everyday challenges. I have had enough time to get to know each of them and share life experiences, insights, concerns or even toast with them for any achievement at work. The program itself allows us to build a strong partnership among us while we meet each other during training sessions twice a week and after them for a fancy drink. This program has people onboard who share positively their challenges and provide feedback to perform better in every step.

How do you feel the programme has impacted you as a leader in daily life?

I significantly felt the impact in my daily routine and professional work. I have

improved level of self-awareness and self-confidence; have learned how to use influencing strategies to achieve the goal and have helped me to be more resilient. I have also improved the way I deliver messages in order to be understood properly. The program has developed leadership qualities and helped me to differentiate in significant moments the manager from the leader.

Would you recommend the LEAD Albania Program to another peer, colleague or friend of yours who is looking to transition into a more senior role or develop their leadership competencies?

I would highly recommend the Lead Albania Program to every young professional, whether they want to leave a mark at the host institutions or develop their leadership legacy; whether they aim to upgrade in their leadership skills, engage in politics or looking forward to experiencing one of the best leadership programs in the country.

After studying and working abroad for some years, Albana Karapanço returned Albania in 2020. For her, LEAD Albania Progran seemed to be a good fit and she considered the enrollment in the program as the chance to develop leadership skills and her career growth. “Indeed, it turned out to be a very healthy re-integration into the Albanian reality. During my LEAD year at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, I was thoroughly involved with negotiating chapters of the EU integration process. This was a valuable experience for me as a lawyer,” Karapanço said.

Being a lawyer by profession, Karapanço, a LEAD Fellow of 2020-2021 Class, thinks that LEAD Albania is the right program for the aspiring professionals who aim to strengthen their leadership skills and “have a different perspective on how decision-

making process functions in certain setting.”

She served at the Ministry of Finance and Economy during the LEAD Year. “I was thoroughly involved with negotiating chapters of the EU integration process. This was a valuable experience for me as a lawyer.”

Hello Albana, thank you for accepting our request for this interview with TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE! Let’s talk more about your career and about your profession. What attracted you to a career in the legal field?

First of all, congratulations for the great job you are doing on this very interesting English-speaking magazine in Albania. It

is fascinating how it simply reaches the audience through the online access and catches attention by the personal stories and latest trends it shares. Secondly, I am pleasantly surprised, since it is my first interview in this type of medium of communication. To answer your question, studying law was always the first choice. As most of other young people, the inspiration to study law came as an inherent belief in justice.

Later, I considered it a field that offers the opportunity to explore many aspects of human nature and sharpens one’s mind to complex problem-solving. Most aspects of our life are governed by law and we encounter it in our daily life more often than we think.

Law is a means to understand how the state and society are structured. From an academic and philosophical perspective, I have been drawn to the interplay of law and morality which is crucial to understand society at a certain moment in history.

In practice, it is a profession that requires perseverance and commitment to the fair administration of justice. To me, being a lawyer means helping others and having the chance to contribute to access to justice. This comes with a sense of fulfillment.

How footprints have the LEAD Albania Program left in your career? How has this Program helped you in overcoming the challenges you face in your profession?

LEAD Albania has been a distinctive experience. After studying and working abroad for some years, I decided to return to Albania in 2020. At the time, I was eager to understand and learn more about central government and public

administration. LEAD Albania was indicated as an esteemed program of leadership and the only one of its kind in the country. At the same time, I received positive feedback from other fellows referring to LEAD Albania as a growth-oriented program.

Thus, the program seemed to be a good fit and I considered the enrollment in the program as the chance to develop leadership skills with a possibility of career growth. Indeed, it turned out to be a very healthy re-integration into the Albanian reality. During my LEAD year at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, I was thoroughly involved with negotiating chapters of the EU integration process. This was a valuable experience for me as a lawyer.

In my opinion, LEAD Albania is the right program for professionals who aspire to gain leadership skills and have a different perspective on how decision-making process functions in certain setting.

Could you tell us a bit more about your ‘LEAD’ experience? What are the learnings you took out of it?

LEAD experience is certainly a great professional and personal growth experience. First, it gives the opportunity to meet excellent professionals from different backgrounds. LEAD is an opportunity to become part of a network of high – aspiring individuals with whom one can collaborate during and after the program ends. Also, the educational component equips the participants with the ability to strategize, to understand and influence others, manage expectations, and build resilience in the workplace. LEAD Albania provides the chance to meet high profile people and share experience with them. It is worth mentioning that throughout the program, participants acquire transferable skills such

as communication, adaptability, teamwork, empathy among others that are essential for professional development.

What advice can you share with peers, colleagues and friends who aspire to follow your ‘LEAD’ path?

The LEAD path is a personal experience and I believe each LEAD fellow has different reasons why they choose to undertake such journey. In this very dynamic labor market, career path is not linear and oftentimes young professionals are looking for a change in their career. For those having lived abroad, LEAD Program seems like the right option to start or continue their professional advancement. For some others, LEAD is a steppingstone to public administration career or politics sometimes. Undoubtedly, this program might be a turning point in the career. LEAD Albania

is a program I would suggest to everyone who would like to gain some perspective on leadership and management in the Albanian context.

My professional aim is to continue to deepen my expertise in business law and cross-border transactions. Continuous learning is a must for a lawyer. As many other professions, we are also witnessing a changing landscape of the legal profession which requires lawyers to adapt and be prepared.

If you hadn’t chosen to pursue a career in law, what career would you have chosen?

In case I hadn’t chosen to pursue a career in law, I would have chosen business management. Business management is a versatile degree beneficial at almost every professional field which provides the grounds to pursue global career opportunities. This is a compelling profile that involves all aspects of a business and requires a harmonious combination of interpersonal and technical skills. It is fascinating to successfully navigate the altered business landscape of the recent years.

What’s next? What do you aspire to do in 2023 and beyond?

I consider self-assessment quite important. Hence, a question I ask myself from time to time is how fulfilled I am. I would say fulfillment does necessarily come from a stage of career or a particular work position but mostly by upholding core values on everyday life. When moving forward with the career, is important to consider our impact and elevate others. At the same time, for me it is significant to be mindful and appreciate the moment while thinking about the next steps.

She talks with TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE about her career and her professional journey crowned recently with her assignment as brand ambassador of Quintessentially making her think aloud that being in the right place in the right moment

is key. Eleana also explains the services and the benefits of being a member of Quintessentially.

Let’s start early in your career. Can you tell us a bit about your studies? What was that experience like?

Well, allow me to compliment you for the tremendous work you do with Trailblazing Magazine. I follow your content and interviews and I am grateful for this opportunity to showcase a bit of myself and my professional career.

When I first went to business and marketing school, I assume like many other young women at the time, I didn’t have a clear path in my mind. I simply placed my bets on a safe and conservative field of study. I was an excellent student, I was confident, outspoken, and I thought I would at least gain a decent education in business school. I don’t believe I was the only one

who thought the same, and statistics have shown that there was a very high concentration in economic degrees at the time. Nevertheless, it was worth it.

Employment opportunities were limited, but not unavailable. An excellent student could always find an average job in a private company. Someone might find this statement as a low blow for the labor market for the specific education, but considering the circumstances at the time - high unemployment, and gender bias – I believe it was “fair for the time and that moment”. Maybe “too” competitive,

impartial as some may say, frustrating for some others, but the way I see it in retrospective: it was hard race with hurdles, which helped many young women become educationally overambitious. I had help from family and friends to find jobs. But that was it,

I gained little know-how, so professionally I had marginal benefits.

I always wanted financial and professional independence.

That is the main reason that pushed me, to pursue a secondary education in law. As I mentioned above – I was educationally overambitious – and again I am assuming I was not alone. I thought that the only way out, the path to success, was through more and more education.

I remember one of my professors asking a question about what made a person intelligent, a question only himself was able to answer – “an intelligent person, is a person who is able and willing to adapt”. There were and there are real role models, successful young women, whose stories are rarely told. It is a shame because there’s a whole new young generation looking for inspiration. All the education that we put through, all the challenges that we have faced growing professionally, everything should serve as an example or as a case study for the next in line.

To what extent, did your years of studies and work contribute to your being the Ambassador of a worldly prestigious brand as Quintessentially? What is your role as brand ambassador?

Every little detail matters as we grow. Maybe not right away, or maybe not in an understandable way, but every

experience shapes who we are. In between studies or work experiences we get a feel of how life really is. If we simply push ourselves to explore a little more, we find real opportunities, and all we need is alternatives. Sometimes we get lucky, and sometimes we write are own luck. It is important, that at any point in our lives to have multiple alternatives from which to choose from, whether they are friendships, professional choices, life opportunities, career ambitions.

I manage a retail mall in Tirana. It is an exciting gig; I deal with all business processes involved at running the mall. It is a communication intensive job. I am dealing with retail clients, business owners, and business managers, operational staff, investors, and other stakeholders. Yet, in between running the mall and managing family responsibilities, I felt there was time and space for some extra activities.

That is when I met Katarina Larisa Ham, the founder and CEO at Quintessentially SEE, an intelligent and charismatic woman, who spoke passionately about life, travel, work, and family. She was looking for a local partner to help develop the business in Albania, and I was looking for my next project.

After a few meetings and discussions about Quintessentially, Lara proposed that I become brand ambassador for Quintessentially SEE. Being a brand ambassador consisted in representing the Quintessentially brand and spreading the knowledge about the exclusive value-added services. Whether it is a new acquaintance, a business partner, or a friend, I never miss the

chance to speak about the values of the brands I represent, so I felt it was the right match for me. Quintessentially is a true authority on luxury and provides the outmost personal service for high networth individuals. It is sophisticated and rewarding for all its members.

Tell us please your definition of Luxury. The outmost convenience in life, material things or services tailored to one’s needs and desires. Access to exclusivity, privacy, and to beautiful material things and experiences. I believe that Luxury is a state of never ending nurture of the senses and of selfimprovement.

What are your personal goals for 2023? Health is always a priority. It is important to be well, and to feel well. I intend to work out a little more this year and to have a healthier lifestyle. My husband loves hiking and I love travelling to exotic places, so I hope one of us will compromise for the other (for sure it will not be me, I don’t compromise for comfort and luxury). I want to spend more time with my children, they grow so fast, and I want to be a great mother.

Work is an important element for the perfect balance in life. I want to get done more yet work less. I plan to spread the knowledge on Quintessentially, and sign up more members to our luxury concierge services. Also, 2023 sounds like a year for

trying new things, or making changes. I want to make a meaningful change this year, I don’t know what it is yet.

Andri Kasneci, the CEO of A2 the exclusive CNN news channel affiliate for Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia, sat down for an exclusive conversation with TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE about his vision and mission at A2 CNN, his plans to grow it through innovation and a well-selected staff and his efforts in creating a culture of transparency and collaboration.

How do you feel in the position of the CEO of the most credible and well-known news channel, A2 CNN, in our country –Albania?

As the CEO of A2 the exclusive CNN news channel affiliate for Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia, I feel excited, motivated, and proud to lead such a prestigious and credible media initiative. Being at the forefront of delivering accurate and timely news to the people of Albania is a huge responsibility, and my team and I are determined to uphold the high standards of journalism that CNN is known for internationally.

As the CEO, I am constantly looking for innovative ways to bring the latest news and insights to our audience. I am always on the lookout for new technologies and platforms that can help us reach and engage with our audience more effectively. At the same time, I am also keenly aware of the importance of maintaining journalistic integrity and impartiality, and ensuring that our reporting is always fair, accurate, and objective.

I believe that being part of the CNN family gives us a unique advantage in the Albanian media landscape, as we can draw on CNN’s global reach, expertise, and reputation for excellence. I am proud to be leading a team of dedicated and talented journalists, editors, and producers, some of the best in country, who are committed to delivering the highest quality news and analysis to our viewers. What prompted the move from the United States to Albania and then to the media world? How much has influenced your career in this regard?

I returned to Albania in June of 2010 after 5 years of experience in the investment banking industry in USA. I saw the move

as a quest for a better opportunity, a personal growth challenge, and a change of environment. Also, my family was an influence since we have always been close to each other.

I didn’t only move from one country to another, I also transitioned from one industry to the other driven by the desire for new challenges, interests, or skills. Throughout my career, I’ve gained extensive experience in a variety of industries, including financial services, construction, media, and information technology. I have managed large teams of professionals, developed, and implement strategic plans, and delivered results - while serving in various roles.

Overall, my experiences in different environments and industries have contributed to my personal and professional growth and provided me with unique perspectives and skills that I can apply in my current career.

What is your vision and ambition for A2 CNN after taking the helm? How do you make the staff to follow and implement your vision?

My vision and ambition for the company is to continue to be a leading news organization that provides accurate, fair, and balanced news coverage to our audience. My goal is to further enhance our current offerings, expand our reach in Kosovo and North Macedonia, and strengthen our brand as a reliable source of news and information in the entire region.

To make my staff follow and implement my vision, I would first encourage them to be open to change and innovation, as we must adapt to the evolving media landscape. As important as it is to share our vision by communicating clearly and consistently, it is also important to train everyone for the future and provide them with the needed technological infrastructure.

Was in your plans that A2 CNN would grow so fast or did it come as a surprise?

When we launched A2 CNN our goal was to provide accurate, fair, and balanced news coverage to our audience. We identified a gap in the market for a news organization that prioritized journalistic integrity and unbiased reporting, and with the help of CNN we were confident that we could fill that gap.

We hired some of the most talented journalists in the country, and implemented state-of-the-art technology, and rigorous editorial standards.

As far as editorial achievements, from day one we set the standard for live reporting. We followed the news and reported them live from the field. We covered live events and breaking news stories, like the student and opposition protests in 20182019, the local and general parliamentary elections. We were the only ones reporting the 2019 earthquake live for CNN, BBC, and other major international news outlets. Our team worked effortlessly around the clock during the pandemic to bring in the latest developments. Whether it was in Albania, Kosovo, or North Macedonia, we were there with every breaking major news story. We covered our country’s important government meetings with European leaders. We were there, everywhere, every time, and that is how we earned the trust of your audience and gained a reputation as a leading news organization in Albania.

Of course, as with any new venture, there were some unexpected challenges and opportunities that arose over the past five years, like the time when one of TV crews walked into a refugee camp at Al-Hawl and we lost contact, or when we experienced technical difficulties and couldn’t broadcast for a few hours – they were all scary moments.

I believe that, ultimately, the key factor in our success was the fact that we were composed-professional, we adapted, and we navigated challenges, while remaining committed to our core values and vision for A2 CNN. So, I can easily say that we planned and worked hard for it.

To what extent, has the competition driven to you to be innovative in your approaches? Do you think you have revolutionized the way of making news and transmitting it in Albania?

We are 5 years young. Before we launched, we did research which identified a gap in the market for a news organization that prioritized journalistic integrity and unbiased reporting. The approach differentiated our programing right from day one as it helped us attract top talent. Hiring good people made the difference with regards to the competition, and that was an achievement we are all proud of at A2 CNN.

We invested in training for our staff and offered them the best tools for their job. Our staff was highly motivated after the trainings as they saw more opportunities for personal and professional growth. From a management point of view, training was key to talent recruitment, retention, and beating the competition.

I strongly believe that our channel has reenergized journalism in Albania. Through

our talent selection process, our innovative approaches, and commitment to accurate and fair reporting, we have revolutionized the way news is made and transmitted. Our focus on storytelling has allowed us to connect with our audience in a meaningful way, and our state-of-the-art technology has enabled us to deliver news faster and more effectively than ever before.

Characterized by a sharp business background, where do you see yourself in the future?

As I mentioned earlier my career has been influenced by my experience in various fields, which has given me a broad skill set, including expertise in news media development.

I strongly believe that technological innovations will favor those with a broader skill set, and those who continuously strive to improve themselves and their abilities, so I plan to stay up to date with industry trends and new technologies. I embrace change and uncertainty as opportunities for growth. My goal is to leverage my skills and

I am grateful for every chance that I was given, for every person who trusted in me, for all those who supported me. Of course, I had a lot of help on the way - from investors, managers, mentors, colleagues, friends, and finally, my family whom I owe a lot of free time.

I am a member of a private not for profit organization of young leaders, called Lidhja. This organization promotes the exchange of values and best practices in work, society, and family. I am grateful to them as well for fostering a fraternal spirit, and for being an unstoppable mechanism for personal and social development.

Rincón del Socorro is a 12,000-hectare (29,700 acres) former cattle ranch on the edge of the Ibera wetlands in Northeastern Argentina that has been made into Iberá National Park.

The stay takes place between outings to the fields that can be on foot, horse, bicycle, vehicle or boat; all different but complimentary ways of experiencing the magnificent sightseeing and learning more about the local fauna.

Rincón del Socorro has a wide range of activities to offer. The guide will define for its passengers what will be the most convenient activity to be carried out day by day according to the weather and agenda of conservation tasks.

On foot, the guest will have the possibility of concentrating in looking for tracks detecting the presence of recently reintroduced animals. While walking there will be time to look for the best angle for a photo, to dwell on the details and to know more about the species around. Over the past years in Rincon del Socorro Reserve Giant Anteaters, Collared Peccaries and Pampas Deers have been reintroduced with success.

Alternatively, in outings on horse the visitor will have a different point of view that will allow for an enjoyment of the landscape heightened by the contact with the animal, which will easily sort through streams and pastures, and will also favour the sighting of different types of Deers, among other creatures. On horse one can reach the coast of the marshlands and ride along it.

The boat trips are done in the area of Laguna Iberá (lagoon) and Colonia Carlos Pellegrini. The village has an interpretation centre and very nice trails along the lagoon and through native forest. The economy of

this town was transformed in 1983 when the Provincial Park was created. Before then the inhabitants used to hunt for a living. Today Pellegrini is a proud town that learned how to conserve and care for its natural heritage, and make of it a way of living.

The boat trips allow the guest to get close to Alligators, Capybaras and hundreds of birds without scaring them. The tours take around 2 hours and are frequently done over the Iberá Lagoon and sometines even Fernandez Lagoon, where, we can also do kayak through the floating islands or embalsados.

Horseback rides, walks and boat trips might be combined with night safaris that make possible magnificent encounters with a very active wildlife that takes advantage of the cool nights to go hunting. If the sky is clear, night sky watching might also take place. This activity sometimes is also accompanied by a spectacular nature show: thousands of fireflies decorating the surroundings. It seems like they are trying to copy the Milky Way.

Rincón del Socorro sets itself as an excellent location for bird watching, where the visitor has the possibility of observing native species like the Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata), the Strange-Tailed Tyrant (Alectrurus risora), among others. In total, the complete list of birds in the region reaches 350 species.

Those who prefer to walk at their own pace may choose to discover some trails in a self-guided way. These trails lead through different landscapes: pasture, native forest and the coast of the wetlands. Many of the roads can also be cycled on mountain bikes.

Many of the activities can be accompanied with picnics, food always taste better in the nature. These stops present a good opportunity to recover energy and to observe every detail that nature has to offer.

It is worthwhile also taking the time to visit Uguay, the nearest village, to learn about the culture of the inhabitants of the wetlands, its crafts and its way of life. There the visitant

can try a “mate correntino” (local beverage) perhaps for the first time, accompanied by some “torta fritas” (a traditional fried bread) and great stories of the hosts.

At the lodge, you will have the possibility of enjoying the different areas of the house by relaxing by the pool, being captivated by the books in the library, or participating in the talks and videos that will allow the visitor to gain a deeper knowledge in the projects carried out by Fundación Rewilding Argentina The ample gardens are constantly visited by the local fauna and can be easily walked in order to reach a nearby small wetland where one can observe and appreciate the native animals. In addition, the vegetable garden provides another beautiful attraction through its sustainable growth and its productions of vegetables that reach the everyday meals. Being a guest in Rincón del Socorro is a way of being a part of the ambitious project that CLT has proposed and carries through with undeniable success.

Children and adults will have the possibility of learning from nature. With kids, we can

look for animals tracks, create nature games, that way they can learn without stop having fun. When it rains, it’s a great excuse to put he rubber boots on, and paddle in the mud..

ACII Happy To See Businesses

Anisa Lloja is the co-founder of Albania Creative Industries Incubator (ACII), a shared digital infrastructure for the cultural community. The platform (albania. culturalyst.com) has resulted key in exploring the potential of the creative industries in Albania.

“Our platform is needed in order to formalize the creative industries in the market and to seriously represent their work online,” Lloja told TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE.

ACII is an outcome of Anisa’s and her sister Manjola Lloja Bushati’s project “Nji Mar, Nji Mrapsht,” the first concept store in Albania dedicated to artisans in the country. This platform brought together the works of 220 artisans from all over Albania from the farthest north where the works come to Albania from Prishtina, and as far south as Gjirokastra.

“Both these experiences have been very interesting and informative for us, as a team. We believe that the most important outcome are the businesses started by those who were empowered through our collaboration. We are very happy we’ve been able to support them in their journey and believe that each holds an important place in the local ecosystem,” Lloja said.

Please can you tell us more about Albania Creative Industries Incubator and how did you come up with this idea?

Albania Creative Industries Incubator (ACII) is a shared digital infrastructure for the cultural community. ACII is the first Albanian incubator for the creative industries, supported by local and international expertise on entrepreneurship, creative industries and ICT. The different components of ACII include an online platform to serve artists and creators, a series of 20 lectures and talks by local and international experts, a series of 3 documentaries, titled “Ne vete te pare,” and 8 sessions of collaborative creations called Kafet e Vogla.

This platform is a continuation of the

innovative work done through Nji Mar, Nji Mrapsht, offering a holistic support to the local artistic scene. All the components of the project were designed to tackle issues of the sector identified through the experience gathered with Nji Mar, Nji Mrapsht. Through our work we’ve seen up close the potential of the creative industries in Albania. The situation we faced due to the pandemic made very obvious two immediate needs of the sector: its formalization and its serious presence online.

Our platform is needed in order to formalize the creative industries in the market and to seriously represent their work online. Our incubator aspect is needed in order to support such industry reach its potential.

Through the support of EU4Innovation, the first year of operation of ACII was very successful and exceeded our expectations, in terms of engagement and interest by the creative sector community.

What makes your business so unique and what are your intentions about it?

ACII is a new approach to incubators and creative industries, merging the best of both sides. Our platform, where each artist has their profile, will serve as a networking platform among artists. This supports the creation and formalization of the artistic ecosystem in the country. At the same time, this platform is a tool to help the artist reach the market in an easier and better regulated manner. It is a tool to democratize the cultural scene. In this way,

the platform serves the whole community as well, formalizing the artistic offer and giving them an opportunity to get to know the cultural scene of their city.

The online platform brought to Albania a successful platform that is already being used in the US. As all content offered to the artist and all exchanges between artists and customers is done online, this platform is an innovation in the incubator scene in the country, while also offering contemporary online sales practices.

Our objective for the future is to continue to grow the network of members, while strengthening partnerships and collaborators with various stakeholders in the country and in the region.

In your view, why you were selected as one of the winners of EU Challenge Fund and what benefits have you scored out of it? How supportive has been the EU 4 Innovation for your business?

The creative industries sector holds incredible potential for development, supporting local economies and wellbeing. This is quite well-established in the EU, but not so much in Albania. Thus, we believe that the first reason was that EU 4 Innovation team understood our vision. Moreover, we believe our proposal to help develop the creative industries sector added to the variety of sectors the program has supported. Lastly, we think that our approach, combining our local experience with international best practices, was a convincing formula.

The support we got from EU 4 Innovation came at the right time – a period of transformation for our business – and gave us the opportunity to take on a new path, increase our community and range of collaborators. This support empowered us to have the structure and formalization we want the sector to have, thus embodying the principles we were transmitting to the community.

Nji Mar Nji Mrapsht was supported by a network of +200 artisans all over the country, while ACCI counted more than 150 members and 350+ participants in the online sessions. Can we talk of tangible results?

Nji Mar Nji Mrapsht was intended to be a meeting point among products and customers. Thus, most of its existence revolved around tangible products, the items produced by our artisan and creatives. Simultaneously with the design, production and sales processes, what we saw happening was the creation of a community. It was this community that we wanted to support through ACII. In this perspective, the numbers of members, participants, etc, are very important to us, and very tangible as well, as each number is a member of the community.

On the other hand, during the first year of ACII we managed to achieve some important results, such as the creation of the platform, delivering a series of 20 online talks by local and international experts – all aiming to raise the capacities of our community members, a series of 3 documentaries showcasing some success stories of our community members, and a series of 5 sessions of Kafet e Vogla – video productions showing the works of many creatives and artists.

Nji Mar Nji Mrapsht led you to other business initiatives and career paths. Can you elaborate more on them please?

As stated above, the experience gathered through Nji Mar, Nji Mrapsht shaped the work done through ACII. Both these experiences have been very interesting and informative for us, as a team. Working with the artists and artisans and being part of international ecosystems of entrepreneurs and culture innovators has been very rewarding.

However, we believe that the most important outcome are the businesses started by those who were empowered through our collaboration. We are very happy we’ve been able to support them in

their journey and believe that each holds an important place in the local ecosystem.

How do you see the ecosystem of startups in Albania? What other steps do you think appropriate in this direction?

We started Nji Mar, Nji Mrapsht in 2014 and we are very happy to see the ecosystem has developed quite a lot since then. The creative industries sector in particular has gained some attention in the recent years. However, a lot more needs to be done, by the members of the sectors itself and by the institution and supporting bodies to develop the sector in a sustainable way, in order for it to achieve its full potential.

Boosting Albanian industrial transformation through quality and standards

Most noteworthy among these challenges are the intense competition due to the globalization of economies and the liberalization of markets; the impact that the governance of international retailers and buyers has on access to markets; increased consumer awareness and the resulting growing demand for high-quality, organic, minimally processed products and the emphasis on traceability and social responsibility; and the increasing risk of marginalization faced by areas with poor infrastructure and small producers. Even though many opportunities have been induced by trade liberalization and efforts have been made to strengthen their integration into the world trade system, Albania – among many developing countries - has not been able to substantially increase their access to global markets. In their efforts to improve compliance, the challenge for national governments and development partners is the allocation of scarce financial and technical resources amongst a plethora of capacity building needs. There is, therefore, a need to identify where the most acute compliance challenges are rooted. In a trade context this means identifying the products and markets with the highest rates of non-compliance and addressing the underlying causes.

In support of these national efforts, the programme elaborates global solutions for common challenges through the development of global public goods, like the Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development Index and the Standards Compliance Analytics. Since its launch, the GQSP has strengthened over 130 quality institutions and service providers around the world. It has directly supported more than 3,000 firms, mostly small and medium-sized enterprises, in improving their operations, management practices and access to new markets.

Albania’s economy is steadily growing with high potential for exports. Rich biodiversity in Albania represents an important potential for economic development resulting in Albania becoming one of Europe’s top producers of medicinal and aromatic plants in recent years. But why are Albanian products hardly to be found in Europe?

What hinders Albanian producers from exploiting the full trade potential of their products?

This is where the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), through the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP), aims to make a difference. In light of the continued and growing relevance of standards compliance, and the solid and positive trackrecord of joint cooperation projects, UNIDO and Switzerland, through the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), have developed a flagship approach, GQSR, which is now a global initiative assisting 12 countries worldwide to boost their competitiveness in 16 diverse sectors. The GQSP identifies quality-related challenges and makes targeted interventions at every single stage of the value chain, increasing compliance with international market requirements, thereby helping

Given the rich biodiversity in Albania, its existing position as a recognized exporter of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) and considering that the majority of the importers are developed countries with stringent requirements in terms of standards and quality, Albania needs to address several supply-side gaps to realize its full potential. Overall, the agricultural sector (including MAPs as well as fruits and vegetables) is the most important sector in the Albanian economy. It contributes to 22.5% of the country’s GDP and is the main source of income for the rural population. The improvement of the sector is a challenge for the Albanian Government. Although several reforms have been proposed to increase transparency, accountability, effectiveness and efficiency in the agricultural sector, their success in implementation has been limited. The agrofood sector in general is characterized by a very large number of producers and a short value chain. Yet, constraints are faced related to limited traceability, lack of quality standards and safety measures, inadequate infrastructure and lack of recognized testing capacities in the country. Another factor

that is dominant in Albania is the farming culture and mentality of the producers, combined with poor education levels and little or no culture for quality among the rural population, which ultimately impedes entrepreneurs from being adaptive to the new challenges of economy, market demand, increasing quality and safety requirements as well as diversification of their products. This means, not only do local producers have very little awareness and knowledge about quality requirements, there is also a lack of adequate and internationally recognized testing and quality infrastructure services to prove compliance with market requirement, even if those are met. One of the key challenges identified to be a major obstacle to trade and exports, is the use of banned pesticides. This is clearly highlighted in an analysis of standards compliance capacity resulting from border rejections of food and feed products exported from Albania to the EU, conducted by UNIDO based on its

Standards Compliance Analytics. Resulting from this analysis, Albania must put special emphasis on strengthen its capacity to export agricultural products that do not present - and can prove not to present - evidence of pesticides or any other contamination, incl. those resulting from lack of hygiene conditions and bacteria.

Against this background, within the framework of the GQSP, the objective of the project in Albania is to strengthen the quality and standards compliance capacity to facilitate market access primarily in the MAPs sector, which will also benefit the food and vegetable (F&V) sector. For the past few years, Albania has been one of Europe’s top producers of MAPs, with its production focused on wild plants such as sage, lavender and cornflowers. These plants are often harvested in the foothills, though they are being increasingly cultivated on a more commercial basis. The overarching goal of the intervention is to align Albania’s quality

infrastructure to the needs of the national production and thereby boost export of MAPs, and fruits and vegetables, in view of accessing foreign markets, particularly the EU market.

Following a comprehensive approach to strengthening Albania’s trade capacities, UNIDO will support producers to make best use of standards, meet market requirements and thereby improve their production processes. Complementary, the GQSP will strengthen national quality infrastructure institutions, in view of providing state-of-the-art services and align to the requirements of the EU, and enhance conformity assessment, incl. testing and certification, to provide internationally recognized services that are accepted globally. will as well provide policy advice to support the alignment of the national quality infrastructure with the systems of the EU. Special emphasis will be put on the promotion of a quality culture and the promotion of collective efficiencies.

All these endeavours are expected to lead to enhanced capacity to trade and boost exports of medicinal and aromatic plants, empowering small producers and improving the lives of the rural population, in line with the Government’s priorities. By creating a conducive environment, creating a culture for quality and providing support to the private sector to increase their productive capacities, the approach strengthens the supply side and stimulates demand for quality services in the long run – promising sustainability.

Over the Last 5 Years, a truck from the Netherlands brings 2500 seed packages to Albania.

For almost 10 years, Food Bank Albania, an NGO based in Tirana, has focused on supporting people in need and reducing food waste by providing surplus food to NGOs and soup kitchens. Through a network of producers, suppliers and merchants, surplus food is channeled through NGOs to people in need across the country.

In Albania, some 300 000 people find it hard to have food on the table. Most food banking activities are done centrally, but to address the poverty in rural areas, a project was started to provide high quality vegetable seeds for growing crops on the recipient›s own land.

Many families have difficulty finding good seeds and they are too expensive. Vegetables, however, are part of a healthy diet and these families can greatly benefit by growing their own food. This will provide

dignity by working for their food and can also earn income by selling extra produce.

One package (10 seed parcels) = One family = One year’s supply of fresh food

Each of the last 5 years, a truck from the Netherlands brings 2500 seed packages to Albania, which are then packaged by volunteers. The project is supported by a Dutch boy who sells homemade cakes to provide the cost of these seed packages.

Last year, at the Dutch Embassy Residence, we were able to package everything in 4 hours, ready for distribution.

The first seeds are planted by February or once the snow melts.

Experts are invited to explain to the farmers how and when to plant the seeds. We asked the farmers what seeds they liked. And every year we do a survey for the results.

After many months of reconstruction works, funded by a collaboration of AlbanianAmerican Development Foundation with the Municipality of Tirana and the Government of Albania, the Pyramid of Tirana was inaugurated on an amazing evening on 11th of May.

Among others, the Prime Minister Rama stressed that “the Reborn Pyramid will become the heart of new Albania of Innovation and the biggest hub in the region for the youngsters who are dedicated to digital technology.” Also, he said that besides being a space for technology and information, the Pyramid will be a station of tourism in Tirana where all the visitors are welcomed to enjoy it.

The iconic building of Tirana will be the new home of TUMO Tirana, an afterschool program at the intersection

of technology and design, which offers for 12- to 18-year-olds in new learning targets such as animation, graphics design, robotics, music, filmmaking, game development, programming, and 3D modeling. The Pyramid will be providing the possibility to host up to 4.000 kids each week attending TUMO courses.

The design project by world-renowned Dutch architecture MVRDV aims to transform the former mausoleum of Albania’s communist dictator into a regional technology and education hub, that represents the openness and the opportunities that were once denied to the Albanian people.
