be mixing up only the tastiest libations out there. So join us as we stir, shake, and pour something delicious!

Hello Sanctuary Sippers!

In this issue, we are making New Orleans-inspired cocktails just in time for the Mardi Gras season! A big thank you to Richard Brown, who was instrumental in putting this all together, and to Shannon Brown for the lovely photos to accompany.

The Sazerac Process

Variations to Explore:

Add more whiskey! You may want to add more sugar as well, another cube will do!

Split the rye whiskey with cognac. Use a different kind of bitters.

Stir the whiskey mixture with ice to dilute just a bit before adding it to the old-fashioned glass. Use a different liqueur to rinse the glass.

the french 75

Ingredients

1-2 ounces of gin or cognac

1 tsp. simple syrup

1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice

4 ounces of champagne

Lemon twist garnish Makes one festive and elegant cocktail!

The Sazerac was created in the 1800s. It is a strong drink, basically straight whiskey, nuanced with subtle flavors of anise, bitters, and lemon. It is a simple way to improve rye whiskey. The ingredients are simple-rye whiskey, a sugar cube, Peychaud’s Bitters, and anise liqueur or absinthe. Some easy rules to follow when mixing up a Sazerac are: Do not shake!

Do not serve with ice. Do not allow the lemon peel to touch the drink.

The cocktail’s history began in 1838 when Antoine Peychaud mixed cognac with his Peychaud’s Bitters. It became the signature drink at the Sazerac Coffee House in the 1850s and was the first “branded” cocktail. In the 1890s, rye took over from cognac.

1/4 ounce absinthe or anise liqueur

Lemon twist for garnish

It makes 1 very fine cocktail!

Chill an old-fashioned glass (fill with ice cubes and set aside)

In a mixing glass, soak the sugar cube in the bitters and muddle Add the rye whiskey

Discard the ice cubes and rinse the glass with absinthe or anise liqueur Pour the whiskey mixture into the glass

Squeeze the lemon and twist it over the glass to express the oil from the peel. Discard the lemon twist, or hang it on the rim of the glass.

The French 75 is a champagne cocktail and simplicity at its best! You can use gin or cognac. The spirit is accented with simple syrup, lemon juice, and the bubbly. It’s a great drink for any occasion, including the Mardi Gras season!

The drink is named after a French military rapid-fire 75 mm artillery gun used in World War I and deserves the name as it is a potent tipple. The French 75 became popular at The Stork Club post-WWI. Early on, it was made with cognac, but at some point, London dry gin took over as the partner to the champagne.

Variations to try to include the French 76, which uses vodka, and the French 95, which uses whiskey. For the best-tasting cocktail, use top-shelf ingredients and fresh lemon juice.

the

Riffs on perfection include using elderflower liqueur instead of simple syrup or triple sec for a more citrusy taste.

Arnaud’s restaurant in New Orleans uses cognac for their French 75; they reduce the citrus to accommodate the darker spirit.

pimm’s cup

The Pimm’s Cup mixes lemonade or sparkling lemon soda with Pimm’s No. 1 and goes even further with the flavor by adding a combination of garnishes that may include cucumber, fruits, and mint. It’s a refreshing, low-alcohol drink that would be perfect for a long day at the parades!

What is Pimm’s No 1? It is a spice and fruit-flavored spirit with a gin base. The basic recipe calls for 1 part Pimm’s to 3 parts lemonade or soda.

The cocktail originated in 1840 from James Pimm of the Oyster Bar in London. He created his liqueurs, called “house cups,” and numbered them instead of giving them names. The Oyster Bar was sold to Sir Horatio David Davies in 1870, and the liqueurs were bottled and sold then. Diageo purchased the brand in 1969. Pimm’s No. 1 is a digestif and may be served straight for a post-prandial sipping experience.

Ingredients

1 and 1/2 ounces Pimm’s No. 1 4 and 1/2 ounces sparkling or still lemonade Cucumber slice or peel for garnish Fresh mint, orange slices, strawberries, etc., for garnish It makes one low-proof, easy, and delicious drink!

Process

Fill a tall glass with ice cubes

Pour in the Pimm’s No.1

Add lemonade or lemon soda

Garnish with cucumber and a combination of mint and fruits of your choosing Enjoy!

More Ways to Enjoy Pimms Cup:

Add sparkling water or tonic instead or in addition to the lemonade or lemon soda.

Make a Pimm’s Rangoon by topping off your Pimm’s Cup with ginger ale or ginger beer.

Make a Pimm’s Royal by topping off your Pimm’s Cup with champagne.

We hope you enjoy these delicious drinks and have yourself a Happy Mardi Gras! Let the good times roll!

This issue’s Family Pet is a real treat because the Hamide family is introducing their German Shepherds, Kona and Skye, to their Sanctuary neighbors. At first glance, these two beautiful girls seem somewhat alike, but as you will see, they couldn’t be more different in their physical characteristics and personality.

Kona became a member of the Hamide family on Christmas Day in 2017 when Santa delivered her from Illinois, where her parents were bred. Kona comes from a long line of West German Sieger Showline German Shepherds. If you aren’t sure what that means, it means that on her father’s side, the males are 1st place champions. Santa picked a really good girl for the Hamides. Additionally this sweet girl is considered a short-haired, black, and red German Shepherd, although commonly, most German Shepherds in the US are black and tan. She is a real beauty.

Kona’s little sister Skye is only a year and a half old, but she has already found her place with the Hamides. Unlike her big sister, this puppy-girl is solid black, but she too comes from a long line of champions. Skye’s parents are from Eastern Europe, but like her big sister, she comes to Louisiana from Illinois.

Although their lineage and physical features are similar, their personalities differ, drastically. Age difference aside, they are truly opposites. About Skye, says Amy, “She is a fiercely protective girl; extremely protective of her humans and our property. Do not try to enter her domain.” Accordingly, anyone who comes within the proximity of the Hamide yard will hear about it from Skye. When she is home her protective instincts are keen, but if she has a visit to the vet or anywhere else, says Amy, “She is a sweetheart to everyone.” She loves her people and is as sweet as can be to those in her circle, but her person is Amy. She follows Amy everywhere and is not too happy about sharing her mama. Adds Amy, “And Jason better not even think about hugging me in front of her because she will wedge herself in between us.” This little girl loves her mama.

If Skye is the wild child between the two Hamide dogs, Kona is the calm one. Five year old Kona was easy to train and is very intelligent. Son Joshua, laughs when he talks about how big sister Kona tries to discipline the younger Skye. He elebaborates on this little motherly move of Kona’s, “If Skye is barking at another dog passing, Kona puts her paw on Skye as if to tell her to stop.” As for Kona and her own self-control, she may have a loud bark that sounds scary, and she is protective of her family, but truth be told, as soon as she gets close to people, she becomes a big pushover and love muffin. She likes people once she gets acquainted, but she is not a fan of other animals. Like Skye, she has a person too. Her special go-to is dad Jason.

The addition of Kona and Skye to the Hamide family has made life a little more chaotic, especially since Kona came on the scene, but also wonderful. Amy says of the the two girls who stole their hearts, “...We couldn’t live without them.” Isn’t that how it is with dogs, though? For all the chaos they can bring to our lives, they certainly make them more wonderful. The Hamides have learned this first hand from their duo, Kona and Skye!

Top 10 Tips for a Healthy Pet in 2023

1. Moisture in the diet. Dogs were never meant to eat dry, sad brown balls. They will eat it, but at the expense of their optimal health. They should have some moisture to help with hydration, digestion, and reduce inflammation. Visit our website, VetNaturally.com, and under Services > Food Therapy, you can find videos to learn more.

2. Preventive bloodwork should be done at least annually. Dogs and cats age more quickly than humans. Bloodwork is a window into your pet’s health. And the diagnostic ranges for any organ system are fairly large. Example: ALT (which tells us about your pet’s liver) is 10-125. If your pet runs at 10 for 3 years and then the 4th year is 125, technically this is normal. But because you took annual bloodwork, you realize that’s a big jump within range. And you can start to support the liver before the dog is in full blown liver disease.

3. Vaccine titers. Vaccine protection is essential. Over-vaccination is dangerous. The only way to differentiate between the two is to measure titers. Titer testing is accomplished by taking a small amount of your pet’s blood and checking for antibodies. If your pet is antibody positive for a certain disease, they won’t need that specific vaccine.

4. Start integrative care—taking a pill at the first sign of illness is not always the healthiest option for your pet. We focus our pet care treatments on the most natural option first. This is safer for your pet short term and long term.

5. Incorporate rehab. Rehab is a widely misunderstood and underutilized treatment for pets. If you haven’t downloaded our “Help Your Older Dog Thrive” Free Guide, we have included that QR code below. Simple exercises like sit to stand or backwards walking can promote healthy long term mobility for your pet.

6. Check the nail length. If you can hear the clip, clip, clip of your pet coming, the nails are too long. Long nails are painful. Long nails cause your pet to place his feet improperly…causing pain every step of every day. This is my soap box issue. You need to help your pets walk comfortably with nails the correct length.

7. Use a hydration spray daily. Much like chapped lips, dry skin and coat is itchy and uncomfortable. We have special hydration sprays to be used daily to help your pet feel and look their best.

8. Do you know the ASPCA poison control hotline? If you don’t, tear out this paper and keep it handy. The number is 1-888-426-4435. They have board certified experts on call 24/7 to answer any of your questions. There is a fee associated with the call.

9. Teach your dog a new trick. Learning new tricks at any age is great for your dog’s mental health and their coordination.

10. Utilize home delivery service to help you keep your fur baby safe. It’s 2023 and vet care has never been more convenient. Our online pharmacy can deliver food, medication and more right to your doorstep. Our team is happy to help you set it up.

marc & jennifer JOHNSON & FAMILY

Marc and Jennifer Johnson, along with their four daughters: Madeleine Poirier, Meredith Poirier, Harper Johnson, and Kinley Johnson, began calling The Sanctuary home just a few months ago but have already settled comfortably into their spacious Tupelo Trace residence. While not exactly looking to move just yet, Jennifer shares that the move for more space was imminent given the size of their six-person family. Not actively looking for their future home, a property they thought would be the perfect fit for their family became available. A losing bidding war ensued, but this would-be ideal home was not to be. As is often the case, however, an overall better situation was on the horizon for the family of six. As Jennifer reflects on their experience, she says, “It was a little heartbreaking, but we knew that there is always a reason for the way things unfold. This house came up, and all the stars and planets aligned. We were able to sell our house right away and move right in.”

As a blended family with four girls aged 17 to preteen,

space was vital. Marc and Jennifer wanted to give the girls space but didn’t want to build, considering the long-term commitment it would bring. For this reason, finding the home at Tupelo Trace was a win. Marc, Jennifer, and the girls would get the space they needed, but equally necessary, the twenty-year-old home would allow them to renovate and update the property to truly make it their own. Almost immediately and using multiple contractors, renovations got underway. Benasco Contractors renovated the primary bedroom and bathroom, while Ruffino Closets finished the design and installation of the main closets. Concurrently, An Orderly Abode was on hand to design and organize amid the transition and upheaval. Jennifer says of Jordan McDonald, the owner and creative director of An Orderly Abode, “ She was wonderful and indispensable!” Additions and renovation continue to the property, with a pool and poolhouse in the works giving this party of six even more space to enjoy home and togetherness.

Jennifer says of her favorite space in her new home, “For

18 | The Sanctuary Living January - February 2023

me, it’s my closet. It just makes me happy. Very girly and rose’ ” For Marc, it’s the living room. He adds, “It’s where we congregate. We watch movies, play games, and watch football.” Everyone loves the living room for the reasons Marc mentioned, but an unexpected favorite is the screened-in porch that was initially set to be removed. This space organically became a favorite when the family began to eat their meals there, and Jennifer adds, “I like having coffee on the patio before the kids get up. Weirdly enough (because I’m a city girl), I really enjoy listening to all the birds.” What a lovely way to start one’s day.

As far as the aesthetics in their home, this blended family likes decor and art with meaning and a connection to them. When traveling, Jennifer and Marc keep an eye out for pieces of art that, as Jennifer puts it, “feel storied and special.” These unique finds are the ones they love to put in their home the most. For notable discoveries locally, however, Niche and V Home & Interiors are a favorite, but Jennifer says, “If I’m honest, Homegoods does have some

great finds.” Their designer obtained most of the furnishings that enhance their residence, except for their dining room table. This lovely feature was selected for Marc and Jennifer by Shane Mutter of Doerr Furniture. The solid wood piece was sourced from an Amish facility in Pennsylvania, where it was designed and fabricated. This special table is exactly what Marc and Jennifer wanted for their family meals because the round shape easily includes everyone in conversation, family banter, and lots of laughter.

Marc and Jennifer are both transplants to the area. Marc is from Oregon, and Jennifer is from Miami. Because of their roots, travel is a must for the family of six, as Marc and Jennifer enjoy returning home as much as they can. Additionally, they find it essential for their girls to explore and experience different things outside of their home base. For weekend getaways, they like spending time on the West Coast. Jennifer says, “Our most memorable family vacation was to Lake Tahoe. The girls loved the scenery, swimming in chilly lakes, and (very short) hikes.” Family time is essential to this blended family, and sharing the world with their girls is one way Marc and Jennifer have found to do this.

Traveling is only one way this family experiences togetherness. Like most families, they are a busy group. Madeleine plays varsity soccer at Mandeville High, while sister Meredith enjoys cheering for the Skippers as an MHS cheerleader. Harper, who attends Mandeville Middle School, enjoys taking dance at Pembo Cieutat Academy of Dance, and Kinley, also a Mandeville Middle School student, plays basketball at Pelican Park. Add a 2-year-old mini Goldendoodle named Aspen to the mix, who never wants to leave her mama’s side, and the term “controlled chaos” is what Jennifer calls it. Four busy daughters going in many different directions can be challenging but manageable.

Slowing down and getting together involves supporting k

each other on the field, at dance recitals, and other competitions. It can just as easily mean a serious game of UNO or a family dinner at local favorites such as La Carretta, Times Grill, or Fat Boy’s Pizza. No matter which they choose, they always find time to spend together as a family.

For Jennifer and Marc, some time with friends is a great way to recharge after a busy week. Such an evening would entail dinner with wine or champagne. Regarding the champagne, Jennifer adds, “[It] tastes remarkably better when sabered.” In addition to their time spent with friends, the couple is always up for a date night. When this occasion arises, Marc and Jennifer frequent local establishments such as the bar at 527, Tchefuncte’s, and Pardo’s.

Clearly, their recent move to The Sanctuary was meant to be for Marc, Jennifer, and their four daughters. Already having some friends who have lived in The Sanctuary for many years has been great and meeting so many new neighbors has also made them feel welcome.

The neighbors are one of the reasons that Jennifer and Marc love their new residence, but another is the wildlife. Jennifer reiterates, regarding her morning coffee time on the screened-in porch, “...the serenity of the morning bird song has been something I have come to love.” Seeing deer at night and in the early morning may well be a novelty that never gets old for Jennifer, a city girl. And even though she says no one believes them, she swears she and the family saw a fairy that flew right in front of them on Sanctuary Blvd. Maybe it was a giant mosquito, dragonfly, or cousin to one of them, but she intimates, “...it did have a wand and a human face.” This fairy sighting should be taken as a sign that this beautiful, blended family has certainly found their place in The Sanctuary.

association

Go Red for Women

The American Heart Association is dedicated to eliminating heart disease and stroke by encouraging people to live healthier lifestyles and get moving to strengthen blood vessels, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and maintain a healthy heart. This heart-healthy knowledge is a critical mission and one that has gained traction in the past 18 years. The initiative has been advanced in recent years with the launch of a well-received awareness campaign called “Go Red For Women.” According to their website, “The American Heart Association’s signature women’s initiative, Go Red for Women, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.”

Closer to home, the life-saving drive is significant as well. In 2020, The American Heart Association, Go Red For Women, held its first ever event on the Northshore. It was a sold-out gala that took place in March, just before the Covid Pandemic. The following year’s Go Red for Women’s luncheon was canceled, but 2022 would see the return of the signature event to the Northshore.

Because of the nearly two-year absence, and for a cause they are both passionate about, mother and daughter duo, Maura Donahue and Lauren Andrews, were happy to volunteer as co-chairs for the 2022 Go Red for Women’s Luncheon. On September 23rd, the Tchefuncta Country Club was the setting for the return of the signature event featuring a wellness expo, Purse-onality silent and live auctions, a fashion show, and moving stories from survivors. About this vital initiative, co-chair Lauren Andrews passionately explains, “It’s not just about wearing red. It’s not just about sharing heart health facts. It’s about all women standing together with Go Red for Women — because 1 in 3 women die from cardiovascular diseases, and losing even one woman is too many.”

As the fight to end cardiovascular disease continues, many dedicated people share their time and talent for this mission. The American Heart Association, Go Red for Women 2022 event was no exception. Many ardent supporters made this special event happen. Circle of Red co-chairs Debra Ethridge, and Rhonda Eckholdt were on hand to generate membership and fundraising for the mission. Lori Murphy, former Go Red for Women Luncheon chairperson, took the reins this year as the auction chair. “Lori,” explains Lauren, “helped bring true “purse-onality.” What exactly is a Purse-onality Auction? This auction is for items such as purses, bags, Yetis, and even kayaks. Each of these special packages contains unique items from the individual who donated them. It was a team effort that was filled with success and lots of fun!

It is through initiatives such as Go Red for Women, and organizations like the American Heart Association that the battle against cardiovascular disease continues. However, it does not continue without the generosity of people willing to support their crucial work in research and education. As a year-long fundraising campaign, many leaders in the community pledged their support to make the 2022 Go Red for Women Luncheon the success it was meant to be.

The 2022 Go Red for Women Luncheon set out with a twofold mission. First and foremost, the objective was to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and its deadly power as the leading cause of death in women in the United States. The second mission was to raise funds for essential research on cardiovascular disease in women. Having faced the challenge of the twofold mission, the achievement was met. The 2022 Go Red for Women Luncheon campaign was a winning benefit for the cause.

Get a Last Will and Testament if you don’t have one. Wills are not just for the 1% or the elderly. Just about everyone needs a Last Will and Testament. Without a formal Will, any disputes over property, assets, children, or even pets will be left to the legal system – and no one wants the courts making those decisions. A Will directs the transfer and management of your property and assets so that your family does not fight over your estate, no matter how modest it may be. A Will can allow you to name a guardian for minor children and place your assets in a trust to benefit your children, other family members, or a charity, and ensure that your last wishes are carried out.

In addition to a Will, you should also have a Living Will, which gives guidance in advance for healthcare and treatment decisions should you become incapacitated - and a Power of Attorney, which allows you to appoint someone to handle your legal and financial affairs if you are unable. If you already have these documents or any life insurance policies, review them each year and update them as needed to take into account any significant life changes, such as marriage, divorce, new children, or the acquisition of new property. These documents are reasonably inexpensive and take about an hour of consultation with an attorney. Unlike the gym, you only need to take action once unless changes are necessary!

Making people feel special with beautiful decor and gift items is a passion that Kelly Simon, owner of Melange by KP, inherited from her mother and grandmother, who introduced her to this world of pretty things.

In the Mandeville business community for 14 years, Melange by KP is the local go-to for elegant and thoughtful gifts when you need something absolutely perfect for that special someone. You can find that and something for yourself with locally sourced items such as original art, pottery, jewelry, and religious items. There is something extraordinary there for everyone, including popular brands of wedding and baby items, luxury candles, home decor, and jewelry.

What is it that sets Melange by KP apart? Kelly says with humble pride, “ We are told daily [by customers] that we are their feel-good, happy place.” The relaxing and serene shopping experience at Melange by KP is enhanced by an ambiance that includes the right background music, a welcoming scent, and the peace that only a fountain can bring.

I have always been curious about the name of this delightful shop, so I asked. I knew that ‘Melange” was French for an eclectic mix, which incidentally is Kelly’s favorite decor style, but where does the ‘KP’ fit in? I was not disappointed with its origin. “My grandmother called me Khaki Pooh growing up, so that’s where the KP comes from,” explains Kelly. Having solved this mystery only makes me like the name even more.

According to Kelly, her favorite part of the day-to-day are the people. As she enthusiastically puts it, “Our customers are the BEST! The conversations, the laughs, smiles, and tears we share are why we open the doors every day!” When you visit Melange by KP, you can be sure that you are always welcome and will get genuine assistance as you search for that unparalleled thing of beauty.

For beautiful and unique treasures, a peaceful shopping experience, and a warm, welcoming exchange, Melange by KP checks all of the boxes. If you have never visited this delightful little shop, put it on your list. You will not be disappointed.

Homes

As a third generation builder, the property development and construction industry were ingrained in Eli Crosby at a young age. One might say it is in his blood, even. “I grew up around the development and home building of the Sanctuary in its early days. My father would take me to his home construction sites as well as the land development side, like the street construction of the neighborhood.” His interest and passion for his father’s work grew as Eli got older. He knew that someday he would establish himself in the business he had grown to appreciate at such a young age.

After graduating from St. Paul’s School in 2017, he pursued a degree in Construction Management at LSU and graduated in 202l. Gaining valuable experience and hands-on knowledge in the industry, he worked for a local home-builder for three years. In 2022, Eli decided it was time to establish the company he had dreamed of while walking around construction and development sites with his father, Stephen, when he was just a boy.

Eli Crosby Homes came to fruition in January 2022, offering new home construction, remodeling, additions, and small jobs. “The goal,” says Eli, “is to become the Sanctuary’s premier contractor being able to take care of any needs a customer may have.” Taking care of customer needs is paramount to Eli, who knows that good communication is the key to recognizing those needs. He explains that this communication is multilayered in this business and should be treated as such. “ Whether it is between homeowner and contractor or contractor to subs, proper communication plays a role in how successful the project is. Proper communication can eliminate many problems that arise during a construction project.”

When it comes to his day-to-day, Eli is quick to point out that as a contractor, there is no typical day-to-day routine. Each day brings its own challenges and rewards. He enjoys being in the field, walking his job sites, and completing projects. Watching progress happen gives him a sense of satisfaction. “ I like seeing things happen on a project, you start out with dirt or an old bathroom, and in a short time, you have a structure or a new bathroom with a completely different look and feel.” This young entrepreneur takes pride in the fruits of his labor and also takes pride in the values he has established at his company’s core. About this sentiment, he says, “Eli Crosby Homes is based on honesty and quality. By treating our customers with honesty and providing a quality product and experience to the homeowner, we strive to create trusting relationships with clients that last.” These essential values are at the center of all Eli Crosby Homes projects.

In a recent project, Eli completed a Padel court for a well-traveled client. A European game, this high-energy sport is a mix of tennis and squash, and the court on which it is played is enclosed with glass and mesh. Matching the construction materials that were used for the court, which were imported from Europe, Eli and his

crew built a matching cabana creating a truly unique area for sport and socializing.

According to Eli, no job is out of his wheelhouse. “Eli Crosby Homes will take on any job big or small from new home construction, additions, [and] bathroom remodels to flooring replacement, painting, and carpentry work.” Third Generation Builder, Eli Crosby of Eli Crosby Homes is the one you seek if your contracting needs include honesty, communication, experience, and dedication.

Clothing+ Home bliss

In 2016, Lisa Swords opened Bliss Clothing and Home, providing trendy apparel and unique home decor in Mandeville. With the success of the original Mandeville location, a second Bliss opened its doors in downtown Covington in October 2020. The Covington location primarily carries apparel with many different styles than the Mandeville shop, so visiting both stores is a must.

Bliss came about because Lisa has a passion for beautiful clothing and home decor and built her early career on finding and sharing these beautiful things with clients as owner of Town and Country Bridal on St. Charles Avenue and later working with clients at former Mandeville boutique The Strawberry Patch. This passion became the cornerstone of her charming shop, where elegant and fun fashion meet with stylish and unique decor.

Bliss Mandeville’s exquisite home decor includes lighting, wallpaper, drapes, furniture, and so much more, all of which Lisa assists in helping the customer select. Whether a client is looking to zhuzh up a monochromatic room with a colorful and fun throw pillow or going bold with whimsical wallpaper in their foyer, Lisa can assist in making the proper connection between the client and their decor. Because she enjoys working with clients and building relationships with people, she is happy to help with design inquiries on all levels, whether it be a room or decorating a newly built home from the ground up.

Bliss Mandeville and Bliss Covington is the place to visit for that stunning, original outfit that makes everyone stop and take notice. Both stores have the latest in the chicest fashions’ with a selection of trendy, unique clothing, jewelry, purses, and accessories.

A bright and inviting environment to spend time, Bliss Clothing and Home in Mandeville and Bliss Clothing in Covington have something distinctive for every taste. That special accessory, dress, or original decor you seek awaits you at Bliss.

Brandi DESIGN TIPS BY

Christmas and New Years are behind us and what a joyful season it was! Now it is time to focus on those 2023 New Year’s resolutions and get ready for the Mardi Gras season!! Luckily, Mardi Gras Day is on February 21st, so we don’t have long to wait for the start of the parades and Carnival fun!

Who likes to decorate for Mardi Gras? It is my second favorite season just behind Christmas. Some of you might not even want to think about decorating after such a busy season, BUT it is much easier than you think and gives your house that added flare!!

Here are a few tips to smoothly transition from Christmas decor to Mardi Gras decor!

1. Leave your tree up! Yes, you read that correctly. Take off the true Christmas ornaments, especially anything red. You can leave any green, gold and white! Then just add any Mardi Gras colored or New Orleans inspired ornaments.

2. Fresh Flowers! All of the local grocery stores carry purple, green, and yellow flowers. A cinnamon scented candle can sure put you in the Mardi Gras spirit.

3. Use the beads that you catch at the parades! You can fill vases, hang them on the tree, lay them around your table, and so much more!

4. Whether you are hosting a dinner or attending an event during this season, be sure to grab your favorite king cake at one of our local bakeries.
