This year our topic of choice was to “Write about a lesson you recently learned - and how it changed your outlook on things.”, and through reading the essay entries we learned just how mature and observant our senior patients truly are. In choosing a recipient, our entire staff reads each essay submission and votes on their favorite essay. This is our second year of awarding a MacBook Air because of how much of a necessity a laptop is in college. This year’s recipient of our 4th Annual Dr. Billy Michal Scholarship Award is Hope Gispert.. Hope will be attending Louisiana State University on an Academic Scholarship where she will be pursuing a career in the medical field. We have watched Hope grow up in our practice the past 12 years and we are so proud of this young lady! We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!”

The HOT days of summer are upon us, and they sure arrived with a vengeance. I can overlook the heat (mostly), because it is SUMMER! I don’t know about you, but I am happy for some down(ish) time with no school and a more lax schedule in general. I love not setting the alarm or scrambling to get to work. No one could be happier about summer than my three pugs! Their lives are complete when I am home and all theirs. In this mid-summer issue, we offer some great summer-related tips for entertaining from the ladies at SNACX, refreshing frozen drink recipes from Sipping in the Sanctuary, and Dr. G addresses the issue of fireworks on the fourth and how to help your pup survive the stress of them. I gleaned a lot about taking care of my garden from our newest feature with Ms. Shelli Brooks, “The Lady in the Garden.” The Colceriu-Dandu family: Calin, Amanda, Jacie, Gabriel, and Saint, their four-legged family member, makes a delightful “Cover Family.” Getting to know a little bit about this lovely family was a pleasure. I love dogs, so the Rapp Family trio of cuties was a real treat! Willy, Chewy, and Murphy Rapp were easy to write about, entertaining, and lovable, to say the least! Here’s hoping summer goes by at a snail’s pace, but not the heat!

Pizza
The Fat Boy’s Pizza evolution began with Gabe Corchiani and his wife, Karen. In March of 2019, Gabe was inspired to create MASSIVE pies and bring them to the city of New Orleans. The Sanctuary
Welcome to the Sanctuary Living magazine drinks column! Donna Canalizo and Shannon Brown recommend seasonal cocktails in each issue making sure you’ll be mixing up only the tastiest libations out there. So join us as we stir, shake, and pour something delicious!
FROZEN DRINK TIME We’re heading into the heart of summer, when a nice, frosty beverage is just what you need, whether poolside, on the beach, or just enjoying time with friends at home! Here are three recipes that we hope you’ll enjoy.
Tropical Colada A good tropical drink should instantly transport you to warm sandy beaches and turquoise waters. This tropical colada does just that. This frozen treat is full of flavor, not weak or watery, and doesn’t have that artificial tropical taste like someone dumped a bottle of tanning oil into the blender! Helpful hint: Prepare ahead of time by freezing all the ingredients. This guarantees a nice, frozen colada that is perfect for these hot, hot days. Ingredients: 6 ounces ripe fresh pineapple chunks 3 ounces ripe mango chunks 4 ounces unsweetened coconut cream 2 tbsp agave nectar 2-3 ounces freshly-squeezed lime juice 4 ounces rum 6 ounces ice cubes Pineapple slice and/or maraschino cherry, for garnish
Directions: Combine the pineapple, mango, coconut cream, agave, and lime juice in an airtight container, and transfer to the freezer until frozen. This will be at least one hour. The sugar in the mixture may prevent it from freezing solid; this is okay.
In a blender, combine frozen pineapple mixture with ice-cold rum and ice and blend until thick and slushy. Taste, then blend in additional agave or rum if desired. Pour into a large glass, garnish with pineapple and/or a cherry, and serve, with or without a paper umbrella and straw.
FROZEN SANGRIA Sangria is the perfect summer sipper, and this version incorporates berries for greater depth of flavor. Helpful hint: Pour the wine into an ice cube tray and freeze for at least six hours to ensure a nice, slushy sangria. Ingredients: 1 pound (16 ounces) frozen mixed berries 1 orange, juiced 2 cups dry red wine (frozen into ice cube trays) 1/3 cup Grand Marnier (You could also use Cointreau, Gran Gala, or Triple Sec.) 2 tbsp freshly-squeezed lime juice 1–2 tbsp honey Directions: Add all ingredients to a blender, and pulse until smooth. Taste, and add extra sweetener if needed. (Note: if you don’t have time to freeze your wine, you can add ice cubes to thicken it.) 12 | The Sanctuary Living

Watermelon Margarita We love a good margarita and adding watermelon and a little mint elevates this drink to the next level. We added a little fresh jalapeno for some zip, but feel free to leave it out if you’re not a fan of heat. Helpful hint: You will need to freeze your watermelon first to make sure your drink stays nice and slushy. Ingredients: 4 cups fresh, ripe seedless watermelon 1/2 cup tequila (We used a white tequila, but feel free to use your favorite kind/brand.) 1/4 cup Grand Marnier (You could also use Cointreau, Gran Gala, or Triple Sec.) 1/3cup freshly-squeezed lime juice 1 to 2 tbsp fresh mint leaves 1 to 2 tbsp agave (depending on how sweet you want it) 1 cup ice 1 tbsp diced fresh jalapeno (optional) Salt for rim (optional) Directions: Cut watermelon into chunks and freeze for at least six hours. Add ingredients to blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses, coat the rim with salt if you like, and enjoy!

lady IN the
Garden
M
y Sanctuary move-in story took place six years ago! It’s hard to believe it has been that long. When we decided to make The Sanctuary our new home, my husband Stephen was told by our Finch Lane cul-de-sac neighbors that he was either going to be a hero or in BIG trouble. He and my oldest son Connor decided to surprise me and move our family to our new house on Finch Lane while I was overseas visiting my youngest son Gaven. The surprise was a huge success with the help of some very good friends and their truck. When I returned from overseas, I was collected from the airport by my husband and taken straight to our new house in The Sanctuary. It was a lovely surprise, and Stephen wasn’t in trouble. I got busy renovating the house on Finch Lane inside and out, which is where my gardening story begins. I have learned some valuable lessons as a dedicated gardener who lives in The Sanctuary. I am happy to pass these lessons on to others. My first experience with the limitations of what you can and cannot plant in The Sanctuary began when I planted a border around my 14 | The Sanctuary Living
newest flower bed with monkey grass (Liriope). I have always planted this around my beds to keep soil and mulch from running out of my gardens during heavy rain, so I planted it and did not think anything of it. The following day I went to water my newly planted babies, and I was shocked to see my orderly monkey grass incomplete disarray! Some plants remained in the ground but were eaten down to the soil line. Others were scattered all over the lawn, pulled from the ground: new dirt, roots, and all. Maybe five plants had survived from the whole flat I had planted. My neighbor Miss Marcia must have heard my gasps over the rumble of her lawn mower that morning because she calmly came over and told me that I had had a visit from the deer last night. What monkey grass they didn’t eat, was simply tasted and dropped on the ground. My love/hate relationship with The Sanctuary wildlife began, according to Stephen, when he special ordered the “wildlife package” for me! July - August 2022
I have learned that The Sanctuary deer seem to like younger plants, so I buy the bigger plants in pots instead of the flats of small baby plants or flowers. Interestingly, deer don’t seem to eat the things that we eat like Rosemary or Lavender, but they will eat roses: thorns and all. I put deer fencing around my Knock Out Roses when I first planted them, but every time the new leaves came on, so would the deer. So much for the deer fence. I have also observed that deer repellent comes in handy when I plant a new Azalea, Camilla, or Roses. The repellent is as essential for new plantings as plant foods like Osmocote or Miracle-Gro LiquaFeed to get that new plant established. I then alternate between the powder repellent like Deer Scram (I like this one because it is a very fine powder.) and the liquid repellent, which is very smelly. I have also tried soap shavings and Cayenne pepper on leaves, but that washes off when it rains.
No plant is truly deer-proof, but there are deer resistant plants. I have had success in my gardens with flowers like Pentas, Snapdragon, Angelonia, Lantana, Foxtail ferns, and bushes like Anise, Junipers, Ginger, Sago, and other palms, in spite of the deer. So, enjoy the Sanctuary wildlife package, compliments of Stephen. A word on weed control In gardens and lawns, weed control is also about water control. Combatting this can be somewhat easy. For example, any low spots in the lawn can be raised with masonry sand. Also, keep your sub surface drainage and ditches clean of debris. This is as easy as running a rake or even a broom through the drain.

To reduce the need for weeding in gardens, keep your beds well mulched and make sure the mulch is thick enough. Two - four inches is recommended. Pine straw is another great option to battle weeds in bales, is easy to spread, and breaks down naturally. Pine straw also comes in dyed colors to create interesting, eye popping areas. This year, I did try a recycled product made from the rubber of old tires that was dyed brown. It makes a good show for edging and because

it comes in bags, it is easy to handle weight wise. I don’t recommend putting the rubber mulch around plants because the rubber holds heat in the summer. For young plants trying to get established, that extra heat from the rubber can be a problem. Another weed barrier that adds an extra layer of weed protectant is landscaping fabric. Although landscape fabric does work on weeds, it can inhibit water from getting to the roots of your plants. Finally, it is important to continue replenishing the mulch in your flowerbeds all year. This will help keep the weeds down and the soil cool. Gardening is really like painting in your gardens with flowers, so have fun and be creative. Late summer bloomers are beginning to come into glory now. What could be prettier than bright red flowers covered with yellow sulfur butterflies and hummingbirds?!

Colceriu-Dandu FAMILY By Greta Honsberger
F
eatured in this issue of The Sanctuary Living, we are excited to present the Colceriu-Dandu family: Calin, Amanda, Jacie, and Gabriel. Residence of The Sanctuary since 2018, this sports-minded family appreciates their neighborhood for several reasons. Some of these reasons include the many social opportunities, the convenient location, the wonderful neighbors, and the peaceful environment. Amanda knows a thing or two about the social aspects of The Sanctuary because she is the social committee chair. “Bringing people together is something I love to do, especially the kids,” explains Amanda. The neighborhood has grown a great deal in the past five years. As such, there are many new 18 | The Sanctuary Living
families. Amanda has made it her calling to connect these families to all that The Sanctuary offers, especially the friendships within The Sanctuary community. These important connections among neighbors are a treasure that Amanda feels honored to facilitate. Location is one of the top reasons the Colceriu-Dandu family appreciates calling The Sanctuary home. Calin travels to his business in New Orleans almost daily, so having quick and easy access to the Causeway is a must, and Amanda likes being close to Gabriel’s school. Everything they need: Just Chillin for Gabriel, Homegoods for Amanda, Fresh Market for Calin, and MacKenzie and Me for Jacie are all close to their home. July - August 2022
To the Colceriu-Dandu family, their neighbors make living in The Sanctuary even sweeter. According to Amanda, when describing their street, “Juniper Court is known for being one of the best streets in the subdivision.” She goes on to explain that the neighborson Juniper Court know each other well, are a close-knit group, and enjoy hanging out together. This close group of neighbors traditionally celebrates the New Year together at a party hosted by the Colceriu-Dandus. It sounds like neighbors are family on Juniper Court. The Colceriu-Dandus love the peaceful and serene environment of their neighborhood. This concept connects to the design and building of their home. July - August 2022
Their home was not built in haste. Every aspect of it was carefully planned over a period of years. Amanda explains, “We wanted it to resemble the things we loved the most: Mexico, Italy, everything Caribbean, and European.” Amanda decorated their home, herself, and has incorporated styles and furnishings from all over the US and Europe. Some of their favorite things about their house are the architecture, the design, and the authenticity. Amanda adds, “The pool design, island design, and a medallion on the front of the house are identical designs.” A favorite part of their house is the second-story terrace, which faces the courtyard. From the balcony, one can find the best view of the courtyard. The view is enhanced by the peacefulness that the family has come to love about their unique home. When this busy family wants to slow down, Jacie, who is studying to be a Physician’s Assistant at Mississippi State, and Gabriel, a soon-to-be fifthgrader at Tchefuncte Middle School, along with their nearly-human Australian Labradoodle, Saint, love to join their parents in the outdoor cabana or the pool to watch sports. watch “ANY SPORTS!” For a local evening out, they enjoy dining at Pardo’s or Tchefuncte. They are also fans of breakfast at The Crazy Pig. Traveling is important to Colceriu-Dandu family. Calin is from Transylvania, Romania, so every summer, the family heads to Europe to spend time with his family. While in Europe, they always visit another country. This is truly a remarkable way for the whole family to experience and learn about the world. v

Salon
Abbie Icamina had a vision for a luxury salon with a harmonious workspace where every guest felt welcomed and stylists supported one another. These key elements, along with an airy, fresh and bright atmosphere, would culminate in early 2020 to become Gray and Graham Salon in Madisonville. A year or so later, when Gray and Graham stylist Amanda Gonzalas came to Abbie with her dream of owning her own salon, Abbie didn’t miss a beat in helping her. Mandy has the same drive, passion, and motivation that Abbie, herself, possesses, so she was thrilled to help her stylist to realize her goal and committed to helping her friend. The end result would be a second Gray and Graham Salon in Mandeville that opened its doors in early March of this year.
Abbie and Mandy wanted both salon locations to mirror each other in terms of looks and feel, although they are currently a little different in their offerings as far as services. The Madisonville salon offers hair, makeup, and esthetic services, while the Mandeville salon offers complete hair services, including hand tied extensions and balayage. Abbie stresses that it is important to note that in both salons they have 5 different levels of stylists for all budgets. Finally, and this is a huge bonus, Gray and Graham offers complimentary blowouts within 2 weeks after your first service. This gives the client a little time to work with their own hair and return at no charge for any modifications that they might need. That is indeed a lovely perk! Gray and Graham Salon is a premier venue offering luxury in personal care. Summer is here and it is time to entertain!! Whether it is hanging out with family and friends by the pool, enjoying a casual cocktail with your social circle, or as the grill master of your backyard, SNACX believes that summertime entertaining should be easy. Entertaining is part of who they are at SNACX. As such, they have partnered with The Sanctuary Living to provide you with not only the best entertaining tips but also the ones that are sometimes overlooked! Co-workers, great friends, lovers of all things beautiful and delicious, and frequent home entertainers, Angelina Valuri and Molly Champagne became the owners of the locally based upscale charcuterie company in December 2021 after purchasing the business from a friend. Since that time, SNACX has served the greater New Orleans area with fresh, hand-created products. Co-owner Molly emphasizes, “Nothing found on a SNACX charcuterie board is pre-made or pre-sliced.” SNACX has a commercial kitchen in downtown Covington, as well as a farm in Slidell where they grow and use their own garnishes, flowers, and seasonal produce, when available. This fresh notion is their goal as they continue to provide their clients with the best charcuterie possible. They continue to focus their efforts on expanding and becoming masters of the craft in all things charcuterie. These enterprising ladies take great pride in their product and like to say when referring to their charcuterie boards, “This isn’t grocery store cheese!” Angelina, an attorney turned business owner, and Molly, a former Felony Investigator, go the extra mile to ensure the very best for their clients. The extra mile for these charcuterie professionals include sourcing the world over for their ingredients, as well as routinely visiting with their cheesemonger and vendors to make sure they are keeping up with culinary trends and tastes. Molly and Angelina are very excited to offer their tried and true entertaining tips to The Sanctuary Living readers. Likewise, we are thrilled to share their knowledge.
…So, here are some favorite entertaining tips from Molly and Angelina that they say “will make your guests think that you left no stone unturned.” • A complete drink station is the perfect way to make sure everyone stays hydrated and happy. We like to include an easy sipping wine like Pinot Grigio or Rose’, a spirit with a mixer, (we love a good Paloma), and something non-alcoholic. Mocktails are always a welcome addition! • Upgrade those ice cubes the night before! We love cutting up strawberries and adding blueberries to our ice trays. This simple trick is colorful and a nice treat for your water drinkers. • Who says water needs to be boring? Herb or fruit-infused waters bring flavor to your gathering. We like the combinations of mint and basil or lime and raspberry. We recommend mixing your herbs and fruit with your water overnight for the best results. • Partying the night away? Don’t forget the lighting! String lights, preferably white, strung across your pool and backyard, always give a nice, bright touch! • Cookouts lend themselves to casual entertaining, but that doesn’t mean you should overlook quality ingredients! This includes all of your meats, produce, and seafood. No pre-made burgers or low-quality hot dogs should come close to your grill. Your guests and your stomach will thank you later! Oh, and don’t forget to let that meat, like your spouse, take a well-deserved rest. • Don’t forget safety! Have a shaded area available for guests to get out of the direct sunlight. Also, keep an eye on your mayonnaisebased salads. The last thing you want is for someone to become ill from the food you provided. We like to keep side dishes that require refrigeration inside the kitchen, where the temperatures are cooler. • Last, but certainly not least: BATHROOMS! You are welcoming guests into your home. Some may even bring a plus one with whom you are unfamiliar. All of the bathrooms to be used by guests should be clean, with all medications and personal hygiene items put away.

Triton Stone Group came to be in August 2006 because of a hurricane and an unexpected change in a career path. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Triton Stone Group President Katie Jensen found out that there are the plans we make for ourselves, but they do not always coincide with those that life has for us. In August 2005, after graduating from UNC, Katie was excited to begin a career for the worldwide shipping company Maersk. While training in Denmark, she kept a close eye on the news as Hurricane Katrina had made its way into the Gulf, and as the days passed, the news from home grew more destructive. As much as she wanted to start her career with Maersk, she wanted to help in the recovery of her home even more and ultimately returned to New Orleans. Upon her return home, Katie and her family began their search to find a way to help rebuild the devastated New Orleans area and establish a family business. Triton Stone Group would come to be the perfect fit, as it checked all the boxes for a businessminded family who wanted to give back to their community.

The Rapp family dogs are a motley crew of two scruffy, white fellas and a muscular little black and white Boston Terrier. You may have seen them out for their evening walk, making their rounds to ensure maximum safety for the neighborhood. They are a sight to see, particularly when another dog walks by. Since they don’t get to sniff the stranger, they sometimes turn on each other in frustration. Marijo and her daughter Anne are the usual walkers, and after experiencing this behavior a few times, they finally devised a plan to avoid this “friendly” scuffle. If you see them walking by, and they are separated, it’s for the best. Trust me. For these three, though, that is only a tiny glimpse of who they are. William ‘Willy’ Rapp is one special little Maltese. Willy became part of the Rapp family with a critical job, which was to be emotional support for Mary Rapp. Mary, at age eleven, had a severe asthma attack that sent her to the hospital, causing a great deal of emotional trauma. The fear of having another crippling asthma attack gripped her, and for a time, Mary’s response to the trauma was to stop talking. Soon, the idea that a puppy could be the answer to help Mary through this tough time became a reality. Willy, named after a dog Mary knew and loved when she was younger, is known officially as William. It’s an important name for an important little dog. Willy was instrumental in helping Mary get through her scary time, and, as all had hoped, she soon began to evolve into her old self again. Of the three, Willy is the bravest, and, alas, he is also the most adventurous landing him a reputation as an escape artist. Early 24 | The Sanctuary Living
on, fences could not hinder his adventurous spirit, and in no time, neighbors got to know this little Houdini. He has outgrown that- mostly! Chewy Rapp joined the family next as a rescue. This Lhasa Apso mix has a fierce underbite with crooked, little, jutting teeth that give him a fascinating face nearly identical to Chewbacca from the Star Wars series. The Rapps are convinced that Chewy is an ancient alien. This could be true since no one knows his age. Whatever his origin, this little guy does some odd, inexplicable things. It is not unusual to find Chewy hiding with Murphy in the closet if the weather turns dark. They climb in a sock basket with Murphy lying on top of Chewy. Packages are a source of true aggravation for this little alien. Chewy runs through the dog door and barks uncontrollably when a package is sitting on the porch. Later, he runs in fear when the package is brought in and opened. Chewie is also a super-skilled carpenter bee catcher. With a simple chomp, he gets all the protein he needs. Chewy doesn’t do much else. Marijo Rapp compares him to a loaf of bread and explains that he does a lot of resting. I find that an appropriate way for an alien to pass the time. The last to be added to the Rapp’s pack is a Boston Terrier named Murphy. Murphy, who goes by names such as Cookie, Bugsy, Terrance, and Terry, was a Father’s Day gift for Aaron Rapp in 2016. Aaron had always wanted a Boston Terrier, and the rest of the family decided he needed a best friend. Baby Murphy was soon found in Poplarville, MS, and would be the one for Aaron. There was no question that he was the one July - August 2022
because, as Marijo explains it, “He was the rock star of the litter.” It was truly the beginning of a best friendship. It didn’t take long for Murphy to assume his spot in Aaron’s heart and the hearts of all the Rapps. Murphy makes a great sidekick and routinely goes to Starbucks twice daily on the weekends with Aaron. The two are inseparable. Ever keen to the feelings of those around him, when someone is in a bad mood, Murphy takes on those same feelings and mopes around. According to Elizabeth, the youngest Rapp, “Murphy is very loyal. He will go all day without eating so that he can eat his dinner at the same time as Dad.” I would say that Murphy truly understands the responsibility of a best friend. Dysfunctional is the word that kept coming up when the Rapps were talking about their three fury family members. Marijo explains that each dog feeds off of the behavior and anxiety of the others. Without a doubt, they are an odd pack, but each plays an important role in the Rapp family. These three know they are loved by their people, and in return, they give that love back in a big way.

Just a reminder that not everyone loves fireworks!! Many of my patients, and all of my own pets, are legit terrified once the popping sounds start. So.... what are your options? Well, there are Western medications that can knock your dog out, and for some dogs, this may be necessary, so they don’t harm themselves or others in their panic. However, one Western medication that I would NOT choose is acepromazine. The reason for not choosing this medication is that Acepromazine does little to mitigate fear and anxiety, and it makes your pet unable to move! Imagine: Your freaked-out pet is still freaked out, only now, because of the Acepromazine, it can’t do anything about it. It’s like a chemical straight jacket and certainly, there are more humane ways to help Fido. If you must choose a Western drug, choose one that actually helps decrease anxiety.
If you want to go the natural route (which clearly I’m all about...) here are some ideas: 1.) Turn up the noise makers such as noise machines, tv, music, or anything with an artificial sound that can slightly mask the sounds of the fireworks. 2.) Try noise-decreasing headsets. Dogs usually will tolerate wearing them. 3.) Add essential oils for relaxation. One drop of lavender or frankincense near your pet’s bed can change the environmental smell and take his mind off of the fireworks. 4.) Put a thunder shirt on your pet. These snug shirts/jackets can give your pet a sense of security through the storm, as well as through the noise of fireworks. 5.) Break out a favorite blanket or allow them to rest in a very special place like your bed or a favorite, comfy chair. 6.) Snack time! Never underestimate the power of food. When the noise of fireworks starts, it is a great time for special treats. Positive rewards for sitting calmly through the noises are soothing and can go a long way in maintaining a calm pet.
7.) Make sure you have baby gates, locks, and other safety features in place. These types of deterrents are important so that your nervous dogs don’t try to run out of the house. Fireworks can make scared pets feel the need to bolt. Be vigilant about your door openings and post signs for incoming guests who may not know the routine. Try posting something that conveys, “We have a scared dog inside. Text and I will hold him while I let you in.” Finally, make sure your pet has a collar on with your contact information in case he does run away scared. 8.) Lock your door and put up a sign that says, “Scared pet inside. Text or knock. Don’t open door”. This will remind kids and neighbors that you need to be holding or crating your pet before opening a door. Scared dogs often have the instinct to dash, and you don’t need a terrified dog running into the street or into the woods. 9.) SHARE! Share these ideas with any friends/neighbors who have dogs who struggle with ireworks. These tips can make a huge difference for scared animals.

Wine Tasting
On March 18th, The Sanctuary Blind White Wine Event featuring Wild Bush Wines with wine connoisseur Neal Gernon got underway. Each participant brought three bottles of white wine, entering two into the wine tasting and the other into the prize box. Throughout the evening, neighbors mingled and tasted the blind wines. After sampling the secret wines, votes were cast on the top three picks. At the night’s end, the wine with the most votes was declared the winner!! Lucky neighbors Tom & Cheryl Sumner walked away with the prize box full of white wine!
