ASSOCIATION

From the General Manager November? Are you kidding me? I guess it’s true when they say “the older you get, the faster time flies.” Management has been busy this last month with the finalized budget and with new projects. We have installed new drinking fountains and we’ve

Leann Blue, General Manager

received bids for other projects below. These bids will be presented for board approval between October and November. •

Demolition of the water fountain in the Anacapa breezeway (begun in October).

Bocce Ball turf replacement: Waiting on vendor to provide proposal.

Courtyard fountains retile: Waiting on vendor to provide proposal.

Fitness center new cardio equipment: Bid received, will be presented for Board approval in November.

New carpet in the fitness center: Bid received, will be presented for Board approval in November.

Fitness center: Flex center wood floor resurface.

Tennis courts resurface: Approved.

New Visitors Management System: Approved.

New front and back entrance gate equipment.

Management is receiving ideas for the remodel of the Fitness center locker rooms and bathrooms. These will be presented to the Board once received.

Management is discovering that vendors are backed up, which means it may take a little longer to get a project completed than anticipated. It would appear that everyone is getting back to normal and catching up on projects. I would like to remind all residents to not ride your bicycle on the sidewalk. This is a dangerous practice, and I would hate to see someone get hurt. Please remember dogs must always be on a leash while out on HOA property. I understand that it is good for the dog to run and get exercise. However, for the safety of all our residents, as well as our fur-babies, it is safer to keep them on a leash. Have a wonderful November, a wonderful Thanksgiving, and remember to stay safe, stay healthy, and please be kind to one another.

Thursday December 9

Phoenix Zoolights Join us as we head to the Phoenix Zoo to enjoy the Valley's “brightest” holiday tradition.

* Depart Anacapa at 4:30 p.m. *

There are nearly four million lights and 700 light sculptures at ZooLights. Don't expect to see many live animals. ZooLights is all about the holiday lights!

$32 per person

Tickets go on sale Sunday, October 24, after 2:00 p.m. at the Fitness desk. Check, HOA account, cash (exact change). Tickets are non-refundable.

Saturday, January 1, 2022 New Year’s Day- CLOSED

From the Editor’s Desk The holiday season is here, and life is looking very good during the second-to-the-last month of 2021. My hope is that you and yours will enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. For most of us, this will be an occasion to be grateful for the blessings of our health, our families, and our community. There is much to be thankful for within the gates in Corte Bella. Linda Wright, Editor CB Times We have many seasonal activities and events this month to enjoy from Sunday cabaret, day trips (Verde Canyon, Tubac), Veterans Day dinner dance, comedy show, farmer’s market, cooking classes and more (SOuL’s Salsa Fest). Our community offers so much with its amenities and activities. Join the tennis or pickleball clubs (there

are free clinics), play bocce ball, workout in the gym or swim in the pool. Take an exercise class or learn Tai Chi. Be sure to check out the Spa Specials for November. We are into our good weather months and there’s so much to do and be a part of. Enjoy a lunch or dinner “al fresco” on the Anacapa patio. Stay active and participate in community life, and get involved with our community government (attend a board or committee meeting, join a committee, plan to explore running for the upcoming HOA Board election). Help keep Corte Bella a wonderful place to live.

CULINARY

Recipes From The Anacapa For Your Kitchen Anacapa Executive Chef Dan Haywood

PAN SEARED LAMB CHOPS WITH ROSEMARY MUSTARD SAUCE

Serves 4: • • • • •

12 lamb Chops 4 Tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper 2 Tbsp butter 4 Tbsp finely chopped onion or shallot

• • • • • •

1 Tbsp garlic ½ Tbsp chopped rosemary 2 Tbsp whole grain mustard ¼ cup lemon juice ¼ cup red wine ½ Cup heavy cream

Method: Heat oil in skillet on medium high heat. Season chops with salt and pepper. Place in hot skillet and sear for 4-5 minutes until golden Brown. (You can cook in 2 batches or use a large saute pan.) Turn chops over and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until done through. Transfer to warming plate. Using the same pan, add butter on medium heat and sauté onion, garlic, and rosemary for about 2-3 minutes. Deglaze with wine. Scrape up all the bits in the pan. Add lemon and mustard. Reduce by half. Add cream and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Season. Turn off heat and reserve. To Serve: Cut potato into 4 wedges. Arrange with mushrooms, squash and 3 lamb chops each on 4 plates. Spoon sauce over the chops. Garnish with fresh rosemary. Enjoy.

GALETTE POTATOES • •

2 tablespoons clarified butter, plus more for pan 2 large sprigs fresh thyme, chopped

2 large russet potatoes, peeled, and very thinly sliced (about 1/16-inchthick) Salt and pepper to taste

Method: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Heat clarified butter in a 8-inch cast-iron or non-stick pan over medium heat on stove-top until very hot, but not smoking. Arrange potatoes in an overlapping spiral to fill pan (be careful, because the fat may spatter). While layering the potatoes, sprinkle potatoes with salt, pepper, and chopped thyme. Cook until golden brown, about 8 minutes. Carefully pour off excess butter, if there is any, and reserve. Turn galette out onto a baking sheet. Using two spatulas, carefully return galette to skillet, browned side up. Season with salt and pepper. Cover with sauté pan or lid; transfer to oven, and bake until second side is brown and potatoes are cooked through, about 20 to 30 minutes more. Remove top sauté pan 5 minutes before removing skillet from oven. Carefully slide galette onto cutting board. Cut into 4 -6 wedges, and serve immediately.

COMMITTEES

From the HOA Board Treasurer First, I’d like to thank the Finance Committee, HOA General Manager, Leann Blue, and her First Service team for all the work that went into 2022 Budget preparation. This year was a bit different in that we have had changes with two key individuals that would normally contribute to the budget.

Dave Thomas HOA Board Treasurer

Dan Kronlund along with his wife decided to leave Corte Bella, and he resigned as Assistant Treasurer. HOA Board Director, John Mestemacher, has replaced Dan in that role. Joel Block, our Finance Committee Chairman, also decided to leave Corte Bella and relocate to Florida. Kathy Carmickle, our past HOA Board Treasurer, has graciously accepted an interim

role as Finance Chairman to replace Joel. As I have mentioned in my past article on the budget process timing, it is a tribute to everyone involved that our deadline was met. The 2022 budget was approved by the Board at the HOA Board Open Meeting on September 29th. Once again, thank you to Dan and Joel for their time and dedication over the past years. And, many thanks to John and Kathy for stepping up to take on these very important roles. A quick note relative to the 2021 budget. Through August, we are $28,000 favorable to our planned budget. (For reference, see page 4 of the August financials posted on the Corte Bella website.) Three primary drivers are: • • •

A Bus Stop in Corte Bella Sam Himes Have you ever noticed the “Bus Stop Tonight” sign displayed in Corte Bella? You may have see it on San Ramon Drive or a nearby street. The Corte Bella Bus Stop sign has a long history on that street, starting about 15 years ago at Sam and Kathy Himes’ house. Shortly after the construction of their home, Kathy Himes reported that one of the neighbors walking by made the comment that her pony wall and pavers (between the street and the front yard) “looked like a bus stop”. He suggested that she should get some newspaper vending machines too. The pony wall served as a ready-made seat for neighbors as they walked by or stopped to chat to get caught up on the local happenings. During the Christmas decorating season, gatherings quite often form at this natural meeting place. The same neighbor would walk by, and seeing several people sitting on the pony wall, would comment “Are you waiting for the bus”? Hence, the area in front of this house became known as the Bus Stop. Over the years, these impromptu gatherings became more frequent – especially in the cooler months. After a couple years of informal gathering, a sign was painted to announce the plan to have a “Bus Stop” that night.

The sign announces a “Bus Stop Tonight” and is displayed in front of the house where the gathering will take place. Local neighbors see the sign know that at dusk there will be a gathering there. The gathering is usually in front of the home where the sign is displayed but it can be in the back yard, the driveway or inside. The sign moves around, up and down the street. Usually, everyone brings their own adult-beverages and some bring light snacks but they always bring a smile and a laugh. “It has been a great tradition for our neighborhood.” One neighbor said, “We always look forward to getting together with our neighbors”. If you see the sign, you’ll know that the locals are getting together, and there will not be any bus stopping by.

A Holiday Tradition Like No Other Donna Norton

Friday, December 3rd Carol Dobkins, a Santa Catarina neighbor who loved decorating for Christmas, won’t be available to ring the bell for Salvation Army this year. She passed away unexpectedly this past month, prepared to go to her dentist but never making it to the car. She loved Christmas and the excitement that it provided to the neighborhood as everyone pitched in to decorate based on need. Carol’s house was easy to accomplish with so many “blow ups” to adorn her front yard, including Santa in an Airplane, Mickey & Minnie, a giant Snowman, and a yard of lights flickering on the ground. Fortunately, her daughters have decided to continue the tradition. So, it is with some sadness that we enter into this Holiday Season. But this challenges us to memorialize one of our own in a tradition like no other.

We welcome our Corte Bella neighbors to come out on the first Friday of December, the 3rd, to listen to music, see the lights, and if you choose, to make a contribution to the Salvation Army of the west valley. Last year, due to COVID, we decided to also collect during the Friday/Saturday of the two following weekends when many outside our community visited. The joy in the eyes of children as they walked with their parents was so rewarding. One mother wanted to put a $1.00 in the kettle, remembering how the Salvation Army had helped her daughters with school backpacks the year before. Because of the additional weekend collection (each bringing in over $2000), we were able to collect more than $17,000+ for the Salvation Army. Those funds are utilized here in the west valley for a myriad of needs. The Salvation Army staff appreciates Corte Bella’s generosity that they have come to know over the past decade. Special Note of Caution: Please be careful when visiting the Christmas Street. Each yard has electrical cords, supports, and connections that could potentially injure children, dogs or adults if they should wander into those areas. Be aware that at night, these are not always visible. Please stay on the street or sidewalk areas at all time and avoid going into the private resident yards. Thank you!

COMMUNITY

Continuing The Tradition Of Giving, Caring and Sharing – The Salvation Army Angel Tree The Corte Bella community has continuously, year after year, shown overwhelming generosity by providing Christmas gifts for the many disadvantaged children in the Northwest Valley area. Once again, Salvation Army Angel tags will be placed on the special Christmas tree in the Fitness Center on Monday, November 15th. These tags will have a child’s name, age, and a wish-list of gifts tailored to that child. There will be 200 Angels on the tree.

Of course, we all want to help out during the Holiday Season, but be aware that the Salvation Army continues to aid the needy members of our community throughout the year. If you would like to help out, you can the go to the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 83rd and Grand Avenue to donate gently used household items. The Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers. The address and phone number for the Salvation Army North West Valley Corps is provided below: Salvation Army North West Valley Corps

All donated gifts should be put under the Christmas tree, unwrapped, with the original Angel tag attached by December 13th. The Salvation Army will take care of wrapping and delivering the donated gifts to each child. Please note that your generosity is most appreciated by the Salvation Army North West Valley Corps, and of course, by the lucky children whose Christmas will be magical thanks to your gifts. Plan to pick up your Angel beginning on November 15th, and perhaps take more than one. The Salvation Army carefully screens applications for this program and you can rest assured that your donations will go to those children who are truly deserving.

17420 Avenue of the Arts Surprise, AZ 85378 Phone: 623-977-1084 May the upcoming holiday season be full of good memories with family and friends. Let’s plan to help some children have that kind of memory too.

Where Do Our Contributions To The Salvation Army Go? Captain Mark Merritt, Salvation Army The Salvation Army is the world’s largest charity, serving 131 countries. A remarkable 87% of all contributions go to help people in need. The remaining 13% go to cover administration costs and building upkeep. Compare this to many other charities where 50% to 85% of their funds go to administration expenses. This makes the Salvation Army one of the charities doing the most good! Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, the following services have been provided by the Salvation Army’s local chapter. • Meals served – 105,476 • Food boxed provided – 17,844 • Children’s Christmas gifts – 2,659 • School backpack & supplies – 362

• • • • • •

Water bottles distributed – 213,871 Utility assistance to families – 346 (average $300) Rental assistance to families – 138 (average $1000) Clothing assistance – 4,102 Hygiene kits to homeless – 24,670 Hand sanitizer & masks – over 25,000

Contributions assisted over 369,468 individuals in our local community. This year’s need is even greater. Activities which generate contributions from Corte Bella have become a main stay of our community services. Each year, especially at Christmas, we look to Corte Bella, and especially the Red Kettle donations to fund our annual needs. When you see a Red Kettle, or other activities that support the Salvation Army, know that your donation will go a long way to improve someone life. Thank you! Merry Christmas.

Reflections And An Invitation From Two Adventure Club Members Rich Ingram and Donna Norton

From Rich Ingram:

For exercise, fellowship, and fine lunches, consider joining the Corte Bella Adventure Group. The group is led by Steve and Beth Downing. Steve (and sometimes others) leads scheduled hikes and bike rides in county parks, conservation areas, and national forests. The excursions allow us to see the beautiful wilderness of Arizona. The group then meets for lunch after the hikes. Hikes are on Tuesday mornings and are within a half-hour drive, with a few exceptions. Hikes vary in length from 3 to 9 miles. Past hikes include: •

Yavapi and Pipeline Trails at Lake Pleasant (5 miles),

Mesquite Canyon Trail in the White Tanks (6.5 or optional 9.5 miles),

Hot Shots Trail in Granite Mountain (6 miles),

Munds Wagon to Cow Pie to Hangover Loop in Sedona (8.2 miles),

The Go John Trail in Cave Creek Regional Park (6 miles,)

Thunderbird Conservation Park (3 miles).

Bike rides are every Sunday on quiet Sun City West roads. These rides are about 20 - 25 miles long with a coffee break at midway. The group meets at the Anacapa parking lot from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM. They also meet on some Saturdays with the option to hike, bike on a path, or mountain bike at Sonoran Preserve’s Apache Wash. Sign up at www.meetup.com.(the Corte Bella Adventure Group) to see the schedule of events and to become a member. Email Steve Downing at sd85383@gmail.com for assistance, if needed.

Preparing for a Big Hike: Donna Norton

Knowing we were not in the best of shape for a walk across the Grand Canyon, Vicki Faaborg and I turned to Steve Downing, Adventure Group organizer, for assistance. He was quick to volunteer his knowledge of long hikes and we began to “train” in

earnest. Our first “adventure” was to the White Tank Mountain, where we quickly understood why it’s called the “Goat Camp Trail”, given it’s steep ascents and narrow areas. Our next preparatory hike was to Prescott National Forest area to take on 13 miles of up-and-down trails. Steve encouraged our training and even lent me his hiking poles.

Our senior living is accredited for two reasons. You. And your family. Because having the confidence & peace of mind of accreditation is important. We think you’ll find that our CARF accreditation is just one of the many reasons to take a good look at The Heritage senior living community.

COMMUNITY

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas Tom Morin Yuletide season 2021 is upon us! I can already see, and feel, a sense of determination in our community that this year will be one to remember for a long time. For centuries now, we’ve always kept our appointment with Christmas. The very word brings warmth and joy to our hearts. Our community has brought those same feelings to thousands of people inside and outside of Corte Bella. The next few weeks we’re going to see a transformation familiar to us at this time of year. Residents stringing lights and decorations up and down San Ramon, Figueroa, Pico, Sola and Panchita Drives. It’s such a fun time of the year! It’s highlighted in the first week of December with the annual “Walk About Night”. Throughout the evening we’re taken away with the appearance of Santa Claus (Ed Kuba) and his Elf (Steve Buda), chaperoned by their lovely wives, Connie and Cindy. Their decorative “sleigh” is actually Cindy’s convertible. This combination of dedicated residents have delighted the hearts and minds of thousands of children and adults since 2012. Our granddaughter is testimony to the joy and excitement of seeing Santa and his Elf riding up and down the Corte Bella streets! The treasured moment comes when she’s photographed with this duo of myth and legends of Christmas’ past. After all, it is Christmas! Our community has many events throughout the year but the Christmas “Walk About Night” is the pinnacle of them all. This attraction brings in folks from across the street and across our

nation. Every night I look out and see children, grandchildren, relatives and friends of residents gazing at a microcosm of a Christmas fantasy land. This Christmas, let’s all bring joy to others with a simple act of kindness and generosity. My idea of Christmas, whether old fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait till Christmas to do it? Please come to the “Walk About Night” and see for yourself the amazing displays of hard work and talent that’ll have you recalling your own childhood memories of Christmas. When you see “the man in the big red suit with his sidekick green elf”, wish them both a Merry Christmas and have someone take a picture. After all, it is Christmas!

Non-Toxic Cleaners That Work Ask Agnes

I’ve been a perfectionist cleaner for 65+ years. I’ve tried them all! These recipes for household cleaners included in this article will make your home clean with no toxins, at a low cost, and using fewer products. And, if it doesn’t work for you, I’ll come over and demonstrate. Let’s tackle glass and mirrors first. One simple recipe, one spray bottle, that’s all. I use the large spray bottles from Home Depot. I fill the one-quart bottle with water and about 1/2C white vinegar. That’s it. Spray it on in a fine mist, and dry. My all-purpose cleaner is much the same. Fill another quartsized spray bottle with water. Add a few drops of Dawn liquid, and away you go.

For a very mild cleanser for sinks, tubs, and toilets, I use an old plastic jar with a screw-on lid. I fill it with a mixture of borax (Twenty Team Borax) and baking soda. Use three cups of baking soda to one cup of borax. I usually mix this in a large bowl, whisk it together, and store that in a large container for refills. The borax is a natural disinfectant. With the baking soda, this mixture cleans without scratching any porcelain or any surface.

Wines of Argentina November’s Wine and Dine Dinner Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW Wine & Dine Around the World dinner series begins its global tour in Argentina, the fifth largest wine producer in the world. The HOA event dinner will be held on Monday, November 15th. The focus of the dinners this season will be on wine education with authentic food pairing. Argentina’s signature dish is beef! Breaded, fried, rolled, stuffed, chopped, combined with raisins, olives, and eggs in empanadas, and asada, a no-holds barred slow-cooked barbecue (the parrilla) over smoldering hardwood logs are favorites. Chimichurri, a piquant parsley, garlic, olive oil sauce, is served alongside. A real treat is costillas, beef short ribs sprinkled with sal parrillera (coarse sea salt). In the 16th Century, Criolla, Pais, and Mission grapes came from Peru, Chile, Mexico and Spain. The original vineyards were planted on the coast but it soon became apparent that the sunny, dry foothills of the Andes were the ideal location providing lots of snowmelt for irrigation. By the 1890’s, a second wave of French, Italian, and Spanish wine makers came to Argentina, escaping the phylloxera epidemic (a louse in the soil that attacks the vine roots) Argentina has not been a widespread victim of phylloxera. Much of the grape production has been exported for blending but high-end vino finos have gained respect and market share around the world. The introduction of new-oak barrels and temperaturecontrolled stainless steel tanks have boosted the quality. The Instituto Nacional de Viniviticultura (INV) controls pruning methods, harvesting schedules, transport of grapes, release dates of finished wines, minimum and maximum alcohol percentages, and the planting of new vines. Appellation is not regulated except for vinos finos, Argentina’s best wines. If the grape variety is named on the label, 80% of the content must be of that grape. Chaptalization (adding sugar to increase the alcohol level) is forbidden. With help from the renowned Bordeaux consultant, Michel Rolland, Iscay, a Malbec-Merlot blend was made by Bodegas Trapiche and named a world’s “sleeping giant” of a wine. Wineries of note are Peñaflor, who owns Bodegas Trapiche, and parent company Bodegas Esmeralda, who owns Catena. Rising above all is Bodegas y Cayas de Weinert, whose Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Merlot blends have been compared to older vintages of top Bordeaux. Above all in Argentina, Malbec is magic! Many other grapes do well in Argentina such as Bonarda (aka Charbono), Merlot. Tempranillo, and Sangiovese. Irrigation has two schools of thought in Argentina. One method is flood irrigation, also known as ditch Irrigation. In desert areas like Mendoza, irrigation is an absolute necessity. In the old days,

Argentina’s wine production was consumed by its own large domestic market, so volume was key. Flood irrigation was easy to maintain and can maximize yields. Quality grapes, however, want a lower yield so drip irrigation is the system of choice. Too much water leads to constant shoot-cutting, which leads to dilution of the grape must. However, drip irrigation can offer a home to the louse phylloxera and nematodes, where flood irrigation washes away the insect’s underground tunnels, and eliminates the pest. Malbec does not take well to grafting, preferring to remain on its own phylloxera-susceptible roots, so flood irrigation can be advantageous. Salta is northernmost wine-producing region. Climate is tropical with cooler, high-elevations sites. Regional specialties are white Torrontés and red Tannat. Catamarca has sandy, stony soil perfect for fine wine production. Regional specialties are Torrontés and Syrah. La Rioja is extremely warm and dry. Torrontés, a white grape does well here. Torrontés is the only grape indigenous to Argentina. It is a cross between Criolla and muscat of Alexandria. With deep floral and tropical fruit scents, it is a wonderful aperitif, served very cold. “Like life; sweet at the beginning and a little bitter at the end”. Regional specialty is the red Bonarda. San Juan, second largest wine-producing province in Argentina to the north of Mendoza, has a warm, dry growing season. Regional specialties are Viognier and Syrah Mendoza is the most important wine region. Regional areas are Luján de Cuyo and Maipú. The high elevation desert climate with wide diurnal temperatures lengthens the growing season. Northern area produces meatier structured wines. Further south in La Consulta and Vista Flores, grapes produce more elegant floral notes. Medrano and Chacras wines have a distinctive tar and mineral profile. Regional specialties here are Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Uco Valley is 50 miles south of Mendoza City. Drip irrigation is prevalent in Uco’s Andean foothills unreachable by flood or furrow irrigation. Soil is alluvial sandy loam with rounded pebbles. Malbec grape makes big wines with intense color, fresh fruit aroma, firm tannic structure and aging potential. Cabernet Sauvignon is fresh with black fruit. Patagonia in the south is home to Rio Negro and Neuquén, exciting viticultural areas for Pinot Noir. Cool climate white grapes like Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Sémillon do well here as do Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Moët & Chandon, Piper-Heidsieck and Mumm have developed a substantial sparkling wine industry.

What Happened in Corte Bella For Pam Lawrence (compiled by Linda Wright)

Cooking with Chef Dan “Taste of the Anacapa” Wednesday, September 17

Executive Chef Dan Haywood demonstrated how to create four delicious salad dressings used in our Anacapa and then prepared a wonderful salad for us to enjoy. The main course of pan-seared salmon with citrus glaze and basmati rice had the class participants in a food coma, but we all found room for the Anacapa’s favorite dessert, the Peanut Butter Pie. It was once again a perfect cooking demonstration.

Day Trip to Cottonwood & Alcantara Vineyards Thursday, September 29

This day trip to the high wine country had 22 Corte Bella residents spending the day in a cooler climate and enjoying each other’s company while exploring the quaint town of Cottonwood before traveling to the Alcantara vineyards tucked away in the hills. After a hardy grilled lunch and some wine tasting, the group stopped enroute home to purchase some pie at the Rock Spring Café in Black Canyon City. It was a good day!

Corte Bella Vets Celebrate Jay Finnell’s 101st birthday Thursday, October 7

Sunday Cabaret with Thaddeus Rose Duo Sunday, September 19

Everyone was happy about the return of this Corte Bella tradition – Sunday Cabaret with Anacapa’s bistro food and live entertainment for dancing! Thaddeus Rose Duo was in the house and the dance floor was filled with every song. All who attended had a really good time.

The CB Vets Club hosted a group happy hour and took the opportunity to celebrate (a few days early) the 101st birthday of Corte Bella’s own, Jay Finnell. Jay is a WWII combat veteran and a long-time CB resident. Jay received a cake and a very heart-felt rendition of “Happy Birthday” from everyone present. May this year bring you much joy, dear Jay!

Anacapa Wine & Dine – Wines from Washington State Wednesday, September 22

Executive Chef Dan Haywood and Jill McChay, Food and Beverage Manager, worked magic with Quail Distributors to bring a beautifully presented four course dinner with perfectly paired wines from vineyards in Washington State. The meal was perfection from start to finish and all who attended were treated like royalty by the Anacapa staff.

The large patio of the Anacapa was filled with Corte Bella residents that gathered to “officially” begin what is traditionally the social season in our community. Anacapa Executive Chef Dan Haywood and his staff treated the attendees to four different food stations in the Santa Barbara room and everyone enjoyed a culinary taste trip. Thaddeus Rose band had everyone on their feet and dancing in the breezeway to their music. The Corte Bella volunteers did a wonderful job of decorating for this event. A delicious cake was served to wish the Anacapa a very Happy Birthday! Mother Nature provided high winds for the event, but a good time was had by all.

Corte Bella Wine Tasting Group Saturday, October 9, 2021 The Corte Bella Wine Tasting Group first gathering was at the home of Jesse and Jeanie Young. The Youngs took the group on a tour through France, stopping at 4 of the 17 wine regions– Alsace, the Loire Valley, Burgundy, and the Bordeaux. Each member brought an appetizer or dessert, which blended perfectly with the Alsatian Riesling, Loire Valley Sancerre, Bourgogne Gamay, and several Right and Left Bank Bordeauxes. The group will meet monthly at a member’s home to celebrate wine based on a theme chosen by the host. A focus is placed on learning about wine and its many facets. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month. Because of the interest of wine within Corte Bella, and the benefits of hosting smaller groups, the group breaks itself up to fit the situation. For many, it was also an opportunity to meet new faces and share in their background and travels. For more information on the Corte Bella Wine Tasting Group, contact Jesse and Jeanie Young at jessedyoung23@gmail.com or 303.748.9897. Stan and Barbara Schnittman, Jeanie Young

Power Putters Rose Edwards

If you have ever hit a hole-in-one, then you know the thrill of golf’s ultimate shot. Recently, two Corte Bella Lady Putters broke the record for total holes-in-one. The previous record of 7 holes-inone was set by Jackie Masters in 2013 Beth Dunn, originally from Nebraska and a Corte Bella resident since 2006, along with Hilda Furkert, originally from Illinois and Corte Bella resident since 2011, both putted 8 holes-in-one on September 13th. Both Putters were part of a three-some on the course. They started putting and watched each other make multiple holes-inone. Hilda said, “As we approached the final hole, I had 8 holesin-one and Beth had 7. You can only imagine the pressure Beth

felt to make the putt. And she did it!” “We couldn’t do anything wrong!” exclaimed Beth. In celebration they hugged, yelped, and Beth started to sing Queen’s “We are the Champions.” Lady Putters meet on Monday mornings at the Corte Bella Golf Club.

Tennis Season In Full Swing Donna Norton, Corte Bella Tennis Club

We have begun scheduling tournaments for the next several months in anticipation of our Canadian citizens returning to the neighborhood. The first tournament was “Homecoming 2021, on the eve of Halloween. Our competitive play on all 5 courts, combined with a contest for the most BOO-tiful hat (that only needed to be worn for the judges viewing), made for an entertaining morning. We also had a potluck luncheon pool side with the “football theme” continuing. In addition, the West Valley Ladies have begun playing on Fridays at 10:30 AM. Both the 4.0 and 3.5 players would be delighted to have more participation from our new residents. We play against neighborhoods similar to our own but much bigger in size (Pebble Creek, Sun City West, Westwood Village, etc.) If interested, please contact Linda Sivakoff at 623-824-4052 or Donna Norton at 602657-3949. Meanwhile, the men’s league (3.5/4.0) will begin again on Tuesday’s at mid-day, and interested participants should call Doug Kitts at 253-377-2366. The Surprise Tennis Center is hosting many national tournaments in the coming months. If interested in volunteering (free shirt/ lunch), please let Donna know and she will forward your name to the organizers. Our Free Tennis Clinic has brought a few more people back to the game, reminding them of their younger years, and introducing them to a whole new group of welcoming neighbors. And as always, remember: Tennis adds years to your life and life to your years!
