Happiness and melancholia were the two extremes that marked the life and artistic career of Ettore Sottsass: happiness at having experienced the lost but ever-present paradise of childhood; sorrow at not being able to return there, not being able to stop time.

The organisational psychologist and photographer Giuseppe Varchetta started photographing Ettore Sottsass in 1978, when the designer was already sixty, and continued to do so for the rest of his life. In this discreet, attentive, at times intimate account, Varchetta examines his friend’s face and follows his gradual changes, capturing all the nuances of that mournful expression, and, beyond the sadness, a smile that was an explosion of empathy.

Giuseppe Varchetta, psicologo dell’organizzazione e fotografo, comincia a fotografare Ettore Sottsass nel 1978, quando il designer ha già sessant’anni, e lo segue sino agli ultimi giorni. In un racconto discreto, attento, a tratti intimo, Varchetta scruta per trent’anni il viso dell’amico e lo accompagna nel suo mutamento progressivo, cogliendo con acutezza le sfumature della sua malinconia e, al di là della tristezza, il suo sorriso così simile a un’esplosione di empatica energia.

This is another of the distinctive aspects of Ettore Sottsass’ art, which merged fully with his identity, his quintessential inclination for nostalgia.

Or rather, while being totally immersed in the visual field—or the visible—this artist’s work drew on an intimacy with himself that verges on irony, paradox. As the anonymous writer of the cover flap of Scritto di notte notes, when telling his own story Sottsass adopts an ambiguous, mocking, ironic tone. His work as a designer and artist possesses the same qualities, though this is undoubtedly more difficult to capture because it is not expressed in our natural language, the language we speak on a daily basis. Sottsass finds his fulfilment in this tone.

Varchetta shows us the happiness of the artist and the man, his smile beyond the sadness, a smile of contentment that has a great deal in common with his paradoxical utterance on the canoe in Thailand; an explosion of energy.

In Scritto di notte Sottsass recalls the words of his painting teacher Luigi Spazzapan, who he frequented at length during his training: “In life the unknown is hidden inside of us, who

Conoscerlo Ho conosciuto Ettore Sottsass nel 1976 insieme a Barbara Radice nella casa di Giorgia ed Ennio Brion, a Milano, dove in quegli anni si potevano fare incontri straordinari. Gli ho subito voluto bene per ciò che di inafferrabile e di fragile mi è parso di cogliere nel suo sguardo, nei suoi tratti, nel suo conversare. Ricordo che subito, durante il nostro primo incontro, mi ha chiesto cosa facessi e alla risposta che lavoravo in una multinazionale e mi occupavo di formazione e sviluppo del personale mi ha gettato uno sguardo insieme di tenerezza e di interesse. La tenerezza poteva rinviare al suo pensare da intellettuale creativo quanto potesse essere gravoso e ripetitivo lavorare una decina d’ore al giorno in un’azienda zeppa di procedure e regolamenti; l’interesse poteva invece rinviare alla sua attenzione, malgrado tutto, per l’organizzazione come esperienza umana, che Ettore ha condiviso e straordinariamente interpretato con il suo lavoro di designer in Olivetti.

Mi chiese subito di dargli del tu e mi chiamò subito Pino, come in famiglia e gli amici più intimi.

Meeting him I met Ettore Sottsass and Barbara Radice in 1976 at the Milan home of Giorgia and Ennio Brion: you could meet some incredible people in Milan in those days. He grew on me right away: there was something elusive and fragile about his expression, his features, his way of talking. I remember that during that first meeting he asked what I did and when I replied that I worked for a multinational company, doing staff training and development, he looked at me with a mixture of compassion and interest—compassion perhaps due to his opinion, as a creative intellectual, of how stultifying and repetitive it would be to spend ten hours a day conforming to company rules and procedures. The interest in his eyes, in spite of all that, probably stemmed from his attention to organisation as a facet of human experience, an experience he shared and interpreted in his inimitable style during his time as a designer in Olivetti.

He immediately invited me to use the informal “tu” form of address and began calling me Pino, as I am known to family and friends.

Fotografarlo Ho cominciato a fotografarlo anno dopo anno, una sorta di rito tra noi due. A me procurava grande piacere ed Ettore adorava essere fotografato. Gli mandavo le fotografie dopo qualche tempo e immancabilmente ricevevo dei biglietti, delle storie a commento: sempre quella sua scrittura chiara a lettere maiuscole, testi brevi, ma colmi di evocazioni stupite…

Era facile percepire, anche attraverso quei frammenti di carta, una quasi completa fusione tra l’uomo e il professionista. In ogni sua manifestazione si poteva cogliere lo spessore, spesso doloroso, di una testimonianza personale: un professionista, un uomo, un inventore intensamente immerso nel proprio lavoro, non interessato ad alcuno statuto formale, perché il problema era la propria trasformazione come persona nella consapevolezza intensa che quel processo dovesse costituire in sé un’esperienza estetica. E l’esperienza estetica è, delle prove umane, quella che più rende evidente la consapevolezza che in essa piacere e sofferenza, successo e caduta, sono inestricabilmente legati tra loro.

Photographing him As the years went by, photographing Ettore became a sort of ritual between the two of us. I liked that, and Ettore enjoyed being photographed. I would send him the shots and later I would receive notes, little stories from him: always in that clear handwriting of his, in capital letters, phrases that were short but full of wonderment…

It was easy to see, even in those little scraps of paper, the almost complete fusion between the man and the professional. In every side of him you could perceive the often painful burden of his very personal approach: a professional, a man, an inventor, intensely caught up in his work, not interested in any kind of formal status, because the key issue at stake was his own development as an individual, keenly aware that such a process was an aesthetic experience in itself. And of all human trials and tribulations the aesthetic experience is that which most clearly shows how pleasure and pain, rise and fall, are inextricably linked.

Diapositive «Facciamo così: Marco (Zanini) proietta le diapositive e io commento un po’. Deve essere chiaro che non faccio una conferenza, rispondo solo a domande del pubblico. È meglio così per tutti. Il pubblico vede le immagini, ascolta qualche commento e poi reagisce. Andiamo con la tua macchina e ritorniamo a Milano da Barbara quando tutto sarà finito. Faremo i bravi, pubbliche relazioni, sorrisi, buffet, beviamo un po’ anche.» Andò tutto come da copione: una serata del Progetto Cultura della Banca Agricola Commerciale di Reggio Emilia (oggi credem), voluta da Franco Bizzocchi, l’allora direttore generale, che aveva fatto dell’estetica una leva nella relazione con il mercato. Si tornò molto tardi, nella notte, a Milano. Guidavo piano la mia piccola Citroën. Ettore seduto davanti era silenzioso, ogni tanto canticchiava sottovoce.

Marco semiaddormentato dietro. Era una notte di primavera del 1980.

Slides “Here’s how we’ll do it: Marco (Zanini) can show the slides and I’ll talk about them. It has to be clear that it’s not a conference, I’ll just be answering questions from the audience. That’s what’s best for all concerned. The audience can see the pictures, listen to a few comments and then respond. We’ll take your car and then go back to Barbara in Milan once it’s finished. We’ll be on our best behaviour: public relations, pleasantries, buffet, and get in a few drinks too.” And it went according to plan, the Progetto Cultura evening staged by the Banca Agricola Commerciale di Reggio Emilia (now Credem), conceived by Franco Bizzocchi, who was its director at the time, and who drew on aesthetics as a factor in market relations. We got back to Milan very late that night, me driving my little Citroën. Ettore, sitting in the front, was quiet, humming to himself every so often. Marco was half asleep in the back. It was a spring evening in 1980.

Melanconico Lo guardavo ogni tanto, distraendomi dalla guida, provavo a vivisezionare quello sguardo melanconico su se stesso e sul mondo. Mi è sempre piaciuto molto fotografare la sua malinconia. La malinconia quando è scevra da scetticismo, ma ricca di compassione, assume una prospettiva densa, capace di ricomprendere, nel pensare al sé, un empatico allargarsi “al resto del mondo”. Ettore era sempre così, come uomo e come architetto e designer e fotografo e scrittore.

A form of melancholy devoid of scepticism but infused with compassion gives rise to a depth of perspective: the ability to empathise, to extend one’s thoughts of oneself to encompass “the rest of the world”. Ettore was always like that, as a man, architect, designer, photographer and writer.

Quella sera Ettore era felice, appartato e insieme con tutti. Portava una cravatta Memphis sulla camicia bianca.

Memphis On 18 September 1981 the opening of “Memphis” blocked the traffic in corso Europa in Milan. A great deal has been written about it. That night Ettore was happy, in a world of his own but there together with everyone else. He wore a white shirt and a Memphis tie.
