JPy and JOBOT support all women who follow their dreams! In every issue, we interview people living their dreams in Los Angeles. This issue we are putting the spotlight on Ms.Shoran Ohba, a calligrapher who moved to the US to spread the beauty of Japanese calligraphy.

What made you move to the US?
After retiring from my flight attendant job, I was thinking about my future and my feeling towards making “Japanese calligraphy” as my lifework became stronger and stronger.When I thought about something I am good at and something I can contribute to the world with, I though calligraphy is definitely the one I was confident with. Although I got a job in Japan after graduating from college, I always wanted to work in the US ever since my great experience there as a college student. So I decided to move to the US! My original plan was to open a calligraphy class in Hawaii when I got older, but you never know about life; here I am in the US a lot earlier than I planned! lol
What do you do as a calligrapher? I do a lot of things. I create menus for restaurants, I write boards and create original chopstick bags and greeting cards. I also do performances during events and open workshops. Born and raised in Japan, I feel like one thing I really want to do is to help people here in the US to learn about Japan through calligraphy. Workshops allow me to really interact with people and to really have fun so it’s something I want to keep doing actively. I want people to see my work from events and sell them too. I’m planning on joining a costume event, and as an entertainer I’m thinking about dressing up too lol. If I were in Japan, I honestly wouldn’t do this much, but right now I just want to enjoy what I’m doing. Oh, and I’m currently looking for someone who can help me!
Is there a difference in working in Japan /US? If so, is there anything that you find more difficult? Yes! In Japan, it is easy for me to teach people to understand the basic of calligraphy, but in the US it’s not that easy. I have to start from the most fundamental basics for example what you need and what kind of tools you need to start Japanese calligraphy. Now it is possible for me to buy the basics, but it is extremely difficult to find

good quality tools you find in Japan. I’m going to teach calligraphy to 130 middle school students as a part of a history class, but again it was extremely difficult to prepare for the class. The teacher informed me that Indian ink could not be used publicly since it was not non-toxic and so I was requested to use paint instead. Of course you never ever use paint for Japanese calligraphy but I am in the US. I have learned to become flexible so I’m going to try my best teaching from the basics.

Is there any preparation or anything you do when you are writing calligraphy?
What kind of work do you want to do in the future?
You always need the courage to express yourself freely and at the same time to understand the traditional values. But for me it is important to not be restricted too much by tradition. It is essential to develop your senses and to express the energy you feel from nature and people into “characters” and “sense of colors”.
I had an offer from Graffiti artists and they told me they want collaborate with Japanese calligraphy so I went to their studio. Japanese calligraphy and artwork born from the streets are obviously extremely different in style. With Japanese calligraphy, the characters and the entire composition is well considered and the words are drawn over and over again until a satisfying work is born. With Graffiti artists, it is more about what inspires them at that moment, so it is not structured. It was a great lesson for me to learn different styles in a completely different art form and it made me glad that I came to LA. In Japan, it is a taboo to jump out of tradition, so I want to collaborate with pop art and have sessions that will surprise people. I’m going to take advantage of the fact that I’m in LA and try new and interesting things. If I have the opportunity I would love to write a column about Japanese calligraphy.
How do you want to spread calligraphy? The reason why I moved to the US is not because I wanted to become better known. Japanese people have the language barrier and have their unique nature and ways of thinking, which make them seem a little mysterious. I want people in the US to think Japanese people are cool. The strength of calligraphy is that without any explanation it’s amazing by itself. Characteristic of Japanese people are that they are modest and humble but the level of their work is extremely high and professional but at the same time very refined and delicate. I’m actually not good at talking in front of many people or expressing myself by talking. I want people to feel the aura from calligraphy and I want to heighten myself to convey and express what you can feel from words, lines and pictures. There are not many Japanese people doing that here in the US, so I feel

Shoran Ohba After spending her college life in Irvine and NY, she became a flight attendant. After her retirement, she obtained a license for Japanese calligraphy. From a young age, her grandfather Shonan Ohba and Chise Oishi taught her calligraphy. She opens a calligraphy class in Shizuoka, however moves to the US in November 2014, after having strong ambitions to spread Japanese culture “calligraphy” in the US. Now she opened a calligraphy class in Lomita teaching brush and pen writing and she is also a part of a wide range of activities such as designing menus, interior designs for stores, workshops and calligraphy performances.

書道家 大庭松蘭 IrvineとNYにて大学生活を送り、卒業後は某航空会社にかねてからの夢であったCAとして 勤務。退職後に日本教育書道藝術学院師範を取得する。幼い頃から祖父である大庭松南や 前衛書の大石千世に師事を受けており、免許取得後は地元静岡で書道教室を開講。その後 アメリカでも日本文化を代表する 『書』を広めたいという想いから2014年11月に渡米。現在 はロミータにある書道教室で毛筆・硬筆の指導を行うほか、お店のインテリアデザイン、 メニ ュー書きやワークショップ、書道パフォーマンスなど、多岐に渡る活動を行っている。
渡米されたきっかけを教えて下さい。 大学卒業後に航空会社の客室乗務員として働いた後、今後の 人生について考えるようになりました。そんな時、子供の頃から 習っていた書道をライフワークとして生涯続けて行きたいとい う気持ちが湧き上って来ました。 自分が得意とするもので少し でも世の中に役に立てることがあるとしたら、書道はまさにそ の一つではないかと考えたのです。 また、学生時代にアメリカ で過ごした日々が良い思い出として心に残っていたこともあ り、一度は日本で就職したものの「アメリカで働いてみたかっ た」 という未練のような想いもあり、渡米を決意しました。昔は 「おばあちゃんになったらハワイでゆっくり書道教室でもや りたいなぁ」 とぼんやり考えていたのですが、人生というのは 分からないもので、予定がだいぶ早まってしまいました(笑)。
書道家としての活動はどのようなものでしょうか? 「書」にかかわる様々なことをしています。飲食店のメニュー

書いている時の心構えやこだわりなどがあったら教 えて下さい。 「書」に取り組むには自分を解き放つような勇気が必要です。 常に心がけていることは、伝統的な部分を尊重しつつ、一方で

藤谷文子 Ayako Fujitani is definitely “A woman admired by other women”. She is not only known as an actress but also as an author of books and essays. Her strong intellectual image is perfect for her role in the movie as a beautiful mystery novel writer. She has a perfect character that everyone envies, and when we met her she had the most charming smile and friendliness that made us feel like we were friends. We asked Ayako about the movie, LA and her work.

── How did you feel when you found out about your role in “Man from Reno?” I have worked with the director Dave Boyle in the past and always thought it would be great to work with him again. So when the opportunity came I was simply very happy since I knew him for a while and this time he gave me the leading role in the movie. Mystery genre was new to me so it was a great new challenge for me. ── Do you have similarities with the main character Aki? If there is, it probably is how we both just take actions without telling anybody lol. As I was preparing for the role, I wanted to make sure that I gave the role a reality that makes the audience think, “this person really exists.” Regardless of the genre, I always consider how I can convince people and to make them feel the reality to the role, whether it’s SF or fantasy. So in this movie Aki and I are both authors, so I feel like our director saw the connection and similarities as authors. ── You are active as an actress and a writer. If someone asked you what your job was, how would you answer that question? I think saying “expressionist” is the perfect answer so I always say that when I get that question. There are many elements to making a

movie such as music, costumes and stage sets and each one of them are a form of expression. I love making movies because I get to work with professional from different fields. Writing and acting makes me feel that I’m obviously using different parts of my brain, but it is the same in a sense that it is a different form of expression. Both writing and acting gives me a great balance and I hope to continue them both. ── What are the main attractions of the movie? I want to say all; the story and settings are very interesting. There are many scenes that are in Japanese as well and there are many Japanese casts in the movie, which makes it even more fun. I feel like it is rare to find a movie in the US where Asian people are “normal casts” instead of being Ninjas or Geishas so I think it’s valuable! ── You work both in Japan and Los Angeles? There is no on and off in either one of them but it depends on where I need to be based on work. When I had to shoot a show about 3 years ago, I spent 1 year mostly in Japan. Tokyo and LA are both great in different ways, but I do love LA for the freedom and space I feel. At first I didn’t like that I had to drive but once you get used to it, it’s a relaxing place. I like that I don’t bump into people all the time lol. I
also love the blue skies in LA; it really gives me great energy. I love eating and drinking around in Tokyo but a lot of times the view looks grey with all the tall buildings. So when I come to LA I really feel that the sky is blue! ── Can you leave a message for JPy readers? I think it’s important to work with other people to create a place where everyone can succeed, rather than working too hard by yourself. Cheer each other up with people around you and let’s work hard to find a place where we can shine!

回、アキも自分も作家として活動しているので、監督 が私の中にある 「作家っぽい」部分を見出してくれた のかなとも感じています。 ── 女優としても作家としてもエッセイストとしても ご活躍されている藤谷さんですが、 「ご職業は何です か？」 と聞かれた時、 しっくりくるお答えは何でしょう？ 「表現者」 というのが一番ピッタリの答えだと思って います。例えば映画を作るためには数多くの役割があ り、それは音楽であったり、衣装であったり、大道具で あったり、たくさんのパートが集まって初めて完成す るものです。 そしてそのそれぞれは全て“表現者”が創 り上げていると思います。色々な分野の表現者たち が集まってひとつの作品を創り上げるという映画の 仕事はとても好きです。 また役者と物書きは、使って いる脳みそが違うとは感じますが、何かを表現してい るという意味では同じ。私にとっては、両方あって初 めて精神的なバランスが取れています。 どちらも同じ
―― ロサンゼルスと東京の両方に拠点を置いている のですね どちらかがオン、 どちらかがオフと決めている訳ではな く、その時々で仕事をベースに過ごす場所を決めてい ます。3年程前連続ドラマのお仕事があった時は年間 のほとんどを日本で過ごしたりもしていました。東京も ロサンゼルスもどちらも良いところがありますが、 ロサ ンゼルスは特に開放感があるところが気に入っていま す。人にぶつからないっていいですよね（笑）。最初は 車を運転しなくてはならないのが苦痛だったり、交通 事情は時々大変だなと思う時もありますが、自分で環 境を整えらればストレスが少なく過ごせる街だと感じ ています。 そしてやはり青空に元気をもらえる気がしま す。東京はビルが多いので、街の景色に灰色が多いと 感じますが、LAに来ると 「あぁ！青い！」 と感じたり、一方 で東京に戻ると食べ歩きが楽しかったり （笑）、自分に とってどちらも大切な街です。
くらい大切なので、 これからもバランスよく続けて行 ければいいなと思っています。

材料...ごはん茶碗一杯分、稲荷あげ1枚、焼き海苔(味付 け海苔はNGです。)、薄焼き卵 もしくは スライスチーズ でも代用可能、細めのスパゲッティ、海苔パンチ、ボバ用 の太いストロー(くまちゃんの口用)、つまようじ(パーツ を付ける際に使います)

Ingredients ... One small bowl of rice, 1deep fried Tofu, toasted seaweed (not flavored), thin cooked eggs or sliced cheese, thin pasta, seaweed puncher, thick straw for boba teas (for the bear’s mouth), toothpicks (to set the parts in place)

While you cool the rice ball, let’s make the Inari sushi (Sushi wrapped in fried tofu).
