INTERVIEW WITH YUKI Q1

How long have you been living in the States? What do you like about LA? I went to a prep school in the East Coast while in high school, and since then I’ve stayed in the States. One thing that I like about LA is the sunny weather, it’s like summer all-year-long!

I also like how everything is within an hour drive, like the mountains, ocean, rivers, and the city. I love the fact that even though it is a big city, it’s not cramped like New York or Tokyo.

My favorite place is Point Dume Beach in Malibu. It is a quiet beach somewhat remote, and only local people visit. It’s a special place for me, since it’s the place where I got married.

What type of fashion do you like?

I’ve always liked a mixture of styles where you’re “not trying too hard.” I get playful and mix vintage with chic, intentionally coordinate a high-end brand dress with a casual jacket. Or mix a cute, red clutch as an accent to a cool, black wardrobe. Lately I’m into outfits from GravityLA and buying local, small-brand clothes at flea markets. As for shopping, I go check out new pop-up shops in Venice and Abbott Kinney. The art district in downtown LA is always fun too.

Please share your lifetime goal.

I tend to bore easily, so I always try to challenge myself with something new with my work, I’d love to keep enjoying my work as much as possible as well.

Do you have a favorite word?

It’s cliché, but it’s “HAPPINESS.” It’s quite corny, but I live by a motto that, even if you have no money, no talent, or not pretty, but if you are happy, then nothing is better. Even if you’re rich, beautiful, or smart, if you are not happy, it would be pointless.

Do you have a message for our JPy readers pursuing their dreams overseas?

Keeping a positive, “YES” attitude. If you say “NO” from the beginning, whether it is your dream or work, that would be the end of it. But by having a “YES” attitude, new opportunities are born from it. It’s also important to set a goal. If you start something rather aimless, often times you end up giving up in the middle of it. By setting a realistic goal, you can start to see what you need to tackle your goals.

Q1 アメリカにはいつから住んでいるのですか？ LAの好きなところはどんなところ？

高校生の時に東海岸にある寮生のプレップスクールに留学して以来そ のままアメリカに住んでいます。LAの好きなところは、もちろん年中 夏気分な晴れた天気！あとは１時間程のドライブで行ける範囲に山、 海、川、シティなど何でもあるところが気に入っています。シティだ けれど、NYCや東京の様にスペースがタイトすぎないというのもいい♡ 個人的にLAで一番好きな場所はマリブのPOINT DUMEビーチです。メ インから少し離れているのでローカルの人しか来ないような静かな場所 で、自分が結婚したところでもあり、特に思い入れがあります。

Q2 どんなファッションが好きですか？

昔から変わらず“無理のない”スタイルのミックスが好きです。ヴィ ンテージとシックをミックスしたり、カジュアルなジャケットにあえ てハイブランドのドレスを合わせたり、クールなブラックのスタイリ ングにキュートな赤いクラッチをアクセントにしたりして遊んでいま す。最近はGRAVITY LAのカットソーなど、ローカルの小さなブラン ドの服をフリマで買うのにはまっています。ショッピングは、ベニス やアボットキニーに新しいお店やポップアップショップが増えている のでよく見に行きます。ダウンタウンのアートディストリクトも相変 わらず楽しいですね。

Q3 人生の目標を教えて下さい。

ちょっと飽き性なところがあるので、常に新しい企画に挑戦すること です。そして楽しくて自分がエンジョイできる仕事を続けること。

Q4 好きな言葉はありますか？

シンプルでつまらないのですが”HAPPINESS”が好きな言葉です。凄 くクサイのですが人生お金がなくても、超天才じゃなくても、美人じ ゃなくても、ハッピーだったらそれに越したことはない！というモッ トーで生きています。お金持ちでも、美人でも、天才でもハッピーじ ゃなかったら意味がないでしょ？ ：）

Q5 海外で夢に向かって頑張るJPy読者に一言メッセージをお願いします！ YES思考でモノに励む。最初からNOといってしまったら夢でも仕事で もそこで終わってしまうけれど、YESの態度で励むことでそこから新し い機会が生まれるからです。そして、目標を立てることも大切だと思 います。何事も「とりあえず」という感じで始めると、途中で途絶え てしまうことも多いですが、具体的でリアルな目標を立てると自分が 何をしたいのかというゴールラインがはっきりと見えて、取り組みや すく、続けやすいと思います。

How did you start off your career?

As of now, I am working as a production coordinator. I do research, arrange interviews, get shooting permits, interpret on-set, drive crew/clients, gather things we need for the shoot, etc. I mainly work with Japanese clients. I’ve always told the people around me that I wanted to do many things such as report or interview or coordinate projects. I was also represented by a commercial agent at one point because I had an interest in being in front of the camera as well. When I was on set as an extra, someone approached me later with an offer to become a production coordinator.

I tend to think negatively… <Laughs> more along the lines of “Am I really the best candidate for this job?”

I’m still learning the ropes. I hope that one day I become confident enough to call this work my calling.

Rina Ramirez From Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Had an interest in English as a child, and became a kindergarten teacher at an International school in Osaka. In Osaka she met her husband who was an English teacher. In 2011, they moved back to her husband’s hometown, Los Angeles, and she started working for an event marketing company. Now, she has become a successful production coordinator and is flying all over America.

兵庫県出身。小学生の頃から英語に興味を持ち、 「英語を生かせる仕事を」 と大阪のインターナ ショナルスクールで幼稚園の先生として働いていた頃、英語教師のプログラムで日本に滞在し ていた現在の旦那様と出会う。2011年にご主人とともに彼のホームタウンであるロサンゼルス に移住し、 メキシコの会社をクライアントに持つイベントマーケティングの会社に就職。現在は さらにキャリアアップし、撮影コーディネーターとして北米を中心に飛び回る日々を送る。

EVENT REPORT “HANABI,” A Special Performance by Naomichi Hanazono Held in Los Angeles!

On Saturday, October 24, a special performance

by Naomichi Hanazono, a Japanese dancer, was held at Japanese American Theater in downtown Los Angeles. A two-part stage consisted of a variety of performances including beautiful kabuki dance to pop dance performance; in addition, there was also a collaboration with Mike Penny, a Tsugaru Shamisen player in LA. It was such an exciting show where you could feel Mr. Hanazono himself having fun as well as the fans. It was an evening where everyone thoroughly enjoyed the performance which was fun for all generations and genders, with quick-changing costumes, dynamic dance, and beautiful voices.

Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) Held in LA! For one week from October 26 to November 2, Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) was held at ArcLight Cinema and iPic Theater. AWFF is a film festival with a purpose to strengthen the connections between the film industries in Asia and Hollywood and to increase appreciation for many filmmakers who participate from 50 Asian countries including India, Japan, China, and the Philippines, and it gathers high-quality Asian film projects in Los Angeles. With a desire for even stronger connections between the Asian film industry which continues rapid growth and Hollywood and for promotion of intercultural collaboration, many celebrities attended the red carpet event at the premiere to show their support.

A Seminar “Improving Working Women’s Leadership” Hosted by JASSC Held in LA! The second meeting of “Women’s Leadership Counts Initiative (WLCI) – Improving Women’s Leadership/Initiative” which launched in 2014 was held at InterContinental Hotel in Century City. With the theme of women’s leadership and “How to Navigate toward Your Greatest Potential,” the seminar attracted business men and women with high motivation. At the panel discussion, there was an active exchange of opinions, and the participants were able to discover many valuable insights important in both their careers and lives.

Even though this is our fortieth issue, as always we’ve had so many things happen along the way. Even though this is our fortieth time that we’ve finished the whole printing process, I am amazed at how things never seem to go the same way twice. As of now, I am participating in my daughter’s environmental project at school for a month. I am using public transportation and walking as much as possible. Since I ‘m always in the car, it’s been a great experience so far. I’m noticing the flowers and discovering new cafes. Maybe, sometimes it’s important to change our point of view and look back on the road that we’ve traveled thus far from time to time; in work and in life. JPy is using this issue as a milestone to look back on our journey. We are so thankful for all the support you have given us for the past eight years. We wish you the merriest of holidays!
