What made you move to Los Angeles?

In 2005, I came to California to study English. After graduating from a beauty school in Japan, I stated working at a hair salon as a hairstylist and makeup artist. But I always felt like I needed to study English and was curious about life in overseas. Also, since my mom was an English teacher and has done study abroad, I grew up being exposed to foreign cultures and dreamed of living abroad one day. We used to host foreign exchange students from Europe and Oceania, so I had opportunities to learn about different cultures and

Kana Ishii / Hair Artist 横浜市出身。山野美容芸術短期大学を卒業し、首都圏内で美容師＆ヘアメイクとして勤務した 後、2005年に渡米。語学取得を目的とした短期留学を予定していたが、南カリフォルニアの気 候とカルチャーに惹かれ、アメリカ美容師免許を取得し現地のヘアサロンに就職する。サロン ではローカルアメリカ人の指名顧客を300人以上持つ傍ら、 フリーランスのヘアメイクアーティ ストとしても活躍中。 ウェディングをはじめ、撮影やファッションショーのヘアメイク、 またNPO法 人Girls.Incでボランティアヘアスタイリストをすることも。2013年にはロサンゼルス最大のヘア エキスポInternational Salon and Spa Expoのコンテストで入賞、同年にフロリダ州で開催され たヘアエキスポ Premier Orlandoでも入賞するなど輝かしい活躍で注目される。

美容師／ヘアメイクのお仕事を選ばれたのは？ 子供の頃から絵を描いたり何かを作ったりというクリエイティ ブなことが好きで、将来はそういう道に進みたいと思っていま した。両親は割と固く、手に職というよりは、 「良い学校に進ん で良い会社に就職を」 と願っていたと思いますが、私は美大 に進むことを考えるくらい「何かを創り出す」 というアーティス ト系の職業に惹かれていました。実際に美容学校を出て美容 師として働き始めてからは、仕事の全部が好き （笑）。好きなこ とをして喜んでもらってお金をもらえるなんて素晴らしい仕事 だなと常々思っています。サロンワークをしているうちに、芸能 関係のお仕事をされているお客様が撮影現場に呼んでくれた り、お客様からウェディングの仕事を依頼されたりするようにな り、自然な流れでサロンワークの傍ら、 フリーランスのヘアメイ クとしてのキャリアを積むようになりました。

今の目標を教えて下さい。

Sleep Apnea Syndrome is “a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or instances of shallow breathing during sleep.” Usually the episodes last longer than 10 seconds. Lower law drops during sleep due to attraction force, and the airway gets obstructed, making it difficult to breathe properly. Pumpkin (paste): ½ cup Sugar: ¾ cup, Maple Syrup: 1tbsp Canola Oil: 1/3 cup, Vanilla Oil: 1 tsp Pumpkin Seeds: 2 tbsp, Coarse Sugar: Some ※ Any large sugar crystals would work.

[Directions] 1. Combine <A> in a bowl. Mix well with a mixer.

(Photo ➀ ) 2. Combine all the ingredients of <B> in another bowl and mix well with a mixer. (Photo ➁） 3. Add the mixture (1) in (2) in several batches and mix together. (Photo ➂） 4. Put a parchment paper on a baking sheet.

Scoop 1 tablespoon of dough (3) and place them a few inches away from each other. (Photo ➃） 5. Sprinkle some coarse sugar over. (Photo ➄） 6. Bake in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes at 356ºF.

6. 180℃のオーブンで20分～25分ほど焼く。

[Ingredients] (2 servings) Agar Powder: 1 tsp Water: 200ml Maple syrup: 2 tbsp (For Pumpkin sauce) Pumpkin: 200g (without Seeds) Water: 50ml Soy Milk: 80ml Maple Syrup: 2 tbsp [Directions] 1. Heat agar powder, water and maple syrup in a pot and bring it to boil. Pour it over a vat and let it cool down.

2. Cut the pumpkin in small pieces and steam for approximately 15 minutes in a steamer. Once steamed, remove the skin. Combine the pumpkin, water, soy milk and maple syrup in a mixer and blend until smooth.

3. Cut (1) in appropriate shapes, place them on a bowl and pour the pumpkin sauce (2) over.

［材料］ （2人分） 粉寒天 小さじ1 水 200ml メープルシロップ 大さじ2（かぼちゃソース用） かぼちゃ 200g (種ぬき) 水 50ml 豆乳 80ml メープルシロップ 大さじ2 ［作り方］ 1. 鍋に粉寒天、 水、 メープルシロップを入れて沸騰させたら、 バッ トにうつして冷やし固める。 2. かぼちゃを適当な大きさ切り、蒸し器で15分ほど蒸す。 その 後、皮の部分をそぎ落としたら、水、豆乳、 メープルシロップと一 緒にミキサーに入れ、 なめらかになるまで撹拌する。 3. 器に1でつくった寒天をカットして入れ、 そのうえに2でつくっ たかぼちゃソースをかける。

[Ingredients] (2 servings) Glutinous Rice Flour: 20g Glutinous Rice Flour Water: 20g

Water: 20g Matcha ice cream: Some *Ice cream scoop comes in handy.

[Directions] 1. Combine (A) in a bowl and knead the dough until it’s the texture of an earlobe. *The more you knead, the softer shiratama becomes.

2. Divide (1) into 6 pieces and roll them up in balls.

3. Combine (B) in a bowl and knead the dough until it’s the texture of an earlobe. Same as step 2, divide the dough into 6 pieces and roll them up in balls.

4. Heat water in a pot. Once it’s boiling, place all the shiratama balls. Once they float, continue to cook for another 3 minutes.

5. Remove all the balls from hot water and place them in ice cold water. Let them cool.

6. Put ice cream and then serials in a cup.

7. Place shiratama balls and red bean paste and pour kuromitsu over at the end.

INTERVIEW “One of a kind, Alternative Folk Pop band from Hawaii” describes what Streetlight Cadence is all about.

Violin, cello, guitar and accordion all come together to create their unique style of music, which is quite hard to explain unless you hear them play. Band members all seem like “good guys” and play a relaxing, classy music that makes people feel at home. Although it’s been only 5 years since they formed the band, Streetlight Cadence seems to have their act together. They regularly play shows at Hard Rock Café in Waikiki and last year, they competed against 10,000 bands at Hard Rock Rising Intl BOTB and went home with the 13th place. When the band first started, all the members were still in university and were playing live shows on the streets of Waikiki. Now, they’ve become one of the most iconic Folk Pop bands in Hawaii.

They also have a strong connection with Japan. Two of the band members are half Japanese and thanks to the support of United States Consulate General in Okinawa, they got to tour in Okinawa in July, 2015.

Perhaps, some of their songs are inspired by Japanese culture or their trip to Japan. Their interesting style of music covers anything from pop to classic and

their performance is also unique. For example, one member playfully holds and plays his violin as if it’s a ukulele. Now you understand why the locals love this band. Their beautiful harmony and sweet voice is bringing in new kind of island breeze to the music scene in California. Streetlight Cadence has gained their popularity through their street lives and social media promotions. You can feel their warm personalities on their Facebook page. Streetlight Cadence is a happy and heartwarming band. Once you meet them and listen to their music, you can’t help but to support them and share about them with your friends.

Message from the Publisher A Happy New Year! It’s important to look back on 2015 and reflect on what we learned during the previous year. But I love being creative and coming up with new ideas, so I’m already excited for what 2016 will bring. 2016 marks the 10th year since our company first started (JPy magazine’s 9th year) and I’m sure it’s going to be full of challenges. I hope to grow and improve as a company and as an individual! With that in mind, I’m going to live my life to the fullest every single day.
