INTERVIEW WITH SKYLAR MIMURO Q1

How was the photoshoot for JPy magazine? The shoot was so much fun! I was so happy that we got to shoot around the beach in Malibu especially on such a warm beautiful day. The first location at the green café was super cute and had such a cool aesthetic. I just wanted to walk around the area and keep shooting at cool spots, haha! The JPy crew was so nice and easy to work with. I also loved that I got to incorporate some of my fave clothing brands in the photos. What is your favorite taste in fashion? Do you have a favorite brand? I’m currently really into the futuristic image which includes wearing things like reflective shiny materials, stuff that is rare and normally difficult to find. I also can’t hide my angelic side and mermaid vibes that I naturally have with my pink hair. I love dressing in fluffy stuff with pastel colors and a ton of glitter to top it all off. Yet I sometimes have a polar opposite side that involves wear ghetto goth things, lol. I get a lot of my cute clothes from the stuff that my friends design because they’re all so creative like YRU, Valfre, Tunnel Vision, Nikkilipstick, 24hrs, Rio Warner, LUVS, Sparkl, the list goes on!

Please share with us what you love about LA! Where is your favorite spot in LA? I have so much love for LA; theres a reason why I’m born and raised here and still here, haha! The weather and food is the best obviously. There’s always something fun going on every night. We have decent access to nature and beaches. You can be anything you want to be over here because there are so many opportunities, you just have to be active. I’m lucky that I am surrounded by so many creative and inspiring friends. My favorite spots in LA are Silverlake and the Arts District in downtown because there are so many yummy vegan and health conscious food places with artsy spots and cool people. What made you start your instagram? What is the most enjoyable part of that? I started my Instagram back in high school with never even having the idea or thought of doing what I do with my SNS now. I just got it because everyone else had one and just wanted to keep up with the rest of my friends. It wasn’t until college when I got into finding cool underground fashion brands and posting ootd stuff on my IG. People slowly acknowledged me for my style, and I discovered that I could make something more out of myself while being bored in school. What are your goals in life? Ever since I was little I wanted to be an actress, and that is still the only career I can see myself doing in the long run. All this fashion and modeling stuff that I’m doing right now started when I was bored in school, however, it is also something that I would like to continue throughout my career in the entertainment industry. I have also just developed a passion for pole dancing, so I definitely want to be able to hold my own classes and possibly be a professional performer in that dance style as well.

どんなファッションが好きですか？今はフューチャリスティックなファションにハマっていて、光の反射で輝く素材とか、あまり他で見かけないものが好き。でも自分が本来持っているピュアな部分や自然とピンクの髪になったと思えるような感覚も大切にしています。ふわふわしたパステルカラーの服を着て、その上にキラキラをたくさん！とか大好きだけど、時々はゲトーなゴススタイルとか全く逆のファッションを楽しんだり。あとはお友達が手がけるブランドのお洋服も着てます。YRU、Valfre、Tunnel Vision、Nikkilipstick、24hrs、Rio Warner、LUVS、Sparkl、などまだまだたくさんいて、みんなクリエイティブな才能があるの。

LAの好きなところを教えて下さい。 LAが大好き。ここで生まれてここで育って、まだ暮らしてるんだから（笑）。天気と食べ物はもちろん最高。いつも何かワクワクできることがあるし、自然やビーチにもすぐに行ける。そして可能性に溢れた街だから、自分が動けば何かチャンスを掴める場所。そしてクリエイティブな友人たちからたくさんのインスピレーションをもらえることもラッキーだと思ってるわ。お気に入りのスポットはシルバーレイクとDTLAのアートディストリクト。ビーガンレストランや健康系レストランがあるし、ここに集まる人たちも大好き。

どのようにインスタグラムを始めたの？どんなところが楽しい？インスタグラムを始めたのは高校生の時で、理由はただみんながやっていたから。特に何も考えていなかったの。でも大学に入ってからはアンダーグラウンドのかっこいいブランドを見つけたり、自分のお気に入りコーデをアップしたりするうちにだんだんと評価されるようになったの。学校で退屈している間に自分を活かせる場所を見つけたという感じね。

puts a spotlight on a business woman with global view. Since this issue is on dieting and body care, we interviewed a “dieting expert” Kiyoka Wada. Kiyoka uses her weight loss success story to help others and created a business out of it. We’re going to explore the secret to dieting as well as to feeling healthy and happy from the inside out.

Interview with Kiyoka Wada Dieting Expert

Tell us why you chose dieting as your career. Growing up, I was a chubby kid and was insecure about it. At the beginning, it’s not that I was interested in the subject, but I just simply wanted to lose weight. Through trial and error, I was able to lose 33 lb (15 kg) and this experience made me realize that when it comes to dieting, “continuing the methods” is more important than “what to do.” It made sense to me that your awareness and approach are important, and I starting feeling like teaching this idea would be my mission in life. I studied beauty in NYC and after graduating, I was working with cosmetic product development and as an editor of a beauty magazine. Since I began writing articles on dieting, I started receiving interview requests from various media. I realized that there was a particular demand for “dieting”, so I decided to call myself a “dieting expert” and started my own business. I always loved analyzing and observing things, and also sharing them with others. So in fact, I tried over 300 dieting methods and based on that experience, I analyzed “what type of dieting methods work well with certain types of people” and shared them as “more interesting and useful forms.” I think all this naturally came together and led to my business I have now. Since I’ve struggled with dieting, I’m constantly looking for a stress-free way to diet. I’m always looking for a dieting method that can easily be incorporated in your everyday life like brushing your teeth. In other words, without realizing, my everyday life just became my profession.

“Dieting is to take good care of your mind and body.” How do you share your experience and ideas with others? There was a time in life when I struggled with dieting for over 10 years. I call this time of my life “black era of dieting.” During this time, I tried every single dieting method I could possibly think of and failed miserably over and over again. Because I wanted to lose weight and be beautiful so badly, every time I failed, I was heartbroken. The more I failed, the more I lost confidence in myself like “Oh no, I failed again” or “I can’t do anything right.” During my “black era of dieting”, I was unhealthy and suffering from constipation, pimples, Raynaud’s phenomenon, bloating, and was irritable. Although I was dieting because I wanted to be healthy and beautiful, I was getting the opposite results. Because I’ve had difficulties with dieting, I do understand the struggles people who are on a diet go through, and want to help them even more. I took me over 10 years to figure out the dieting methods that work for me. So I hope to use my experience and teach people effective dieting methods that work for them. Dieting is to take good care of your mind and body. 06

What is the most important thing when it comes to dieting successfully? I always tell everyone that when it comes to dieting, it’s very important “to take good care of your mind and body.” Dieting is usually associated with negative connotations such as pain, stress or patience. But, if you keep reminding yourself that dieting is a way to take good care of yourself, it would be easier for you to make lifestyle changes. You will be able to watch your eating habits and incorporate exercising regularly without stressing yourself out, and you will be able to achieve the results you want. But, please keep in mind that taking good care of yourself” doesn’t mean “pampering yourself.” “Pampering” means you let yourself eat as much as you want, be lazy and not exercise. But “taking good care of yourself” means you listen to your mind and body and cherish them. On the other hand, stressful dieting is almost like bullying yourself. It doesn’t last long and you will rebound repeatedly. Through my countless experience of reckless dieting, I learned that 5 important things for the success of dieting are: to adapt, to predict, to continue, to gather information and to manage. In fact, those 5 things can also apply for saving money and tidying. In other words, when you succeed in dieting, you’ve earned other survival skills that can improve your life such as saving money and tidying.

As a dieting expert, what is your current favorite dieting method you use? Amazake diet. Amazake is a traditional sweet, low-alcohol or alcohol-free Japanese drink made from fermented rice. This is something I’ve been doing for a few years now, but I drink amazake instead of snacking, put it in smoothies, use it instead of sugar when cooking and even use is as scrub and facial mask sometimes.

Amazake is said to be a drinkable infusion. It’s rich in oligosaccharides and fiber and although it has no sugar, sweetness of malted rice eases your cravings for sugar. I believe amazake diet will be popular overseas. I’m also thinking about coming up with personality-specific dieting methods. Your personality plays an important part when determining dieting methods that suit you. I came up with 8 different personality types and introduce dieting methods that work well with each of them. For example, a dieting method that works for an uptight person doesn’t always work for someone who’s care-free. By understanding personalities of my clients in advance, I can help guide them towards efficient dieting methods.

Please tell us your future goals and plans. I would love to teach Japanese health and dieting methods overseas in the future. I’m currently brainstorming possible ways to do so, whether through my articles, doing seminars and workshops or introducing Japanese products and so on.

Do you have any message to JPy readers? “Without change, there will be no growth” is my favorite quote. However, in order to make changes in your life, it requires a lot of energy, so I think being healthy should be our priority. No matter how talented you are, if you’re unhealthy, you can’t make anything happen. Dieting doesn’t simply mean “losing weight.” It means to understand the body type and weight that fits you. In other words, “dieting= being healthy.” In order to challenge yourself and make your dreams come true, constant change is necessary. So I encourage everyone to listen to your mind and body, stay healthy and keep going. And lastly, please remember that being healthy is the most beautiful thing.

How do you spend your free time? 休みの日には何をしていますか？ I love to practice my pole dancing and try to film more videos of it to get more exposure for the sport in an artistic vision. I also like to hike up to the Griffith Observatory because its right by my apartment. I guess I like to do a lot of active things when I have free time like going swimming, going to a dance club, or the beach. 休みの日はポールダンスの練習をしてるわ。動画を見て研究しながらやってるの。あとは近所のグリフィス天文台にハイキングに行ったり、泳いだり、ダンスクラブに行ったり、ビーチに出かけたり、とにかく体を動かしてることが多いの。
