Bruce Ferguson - with some very big ideas.
The new Darkroom office in the freshly renovated historic BNZ building, Warkworth.
Bruce Ferguson’s degree in geography was never going to work. Instead, his fondness for a really good party has spawned a career creating some of the most fabulous events in the world. His company is Darkroom and it’s quietly creating graphic mayhem using cutting-edge technology as you read this. All from the top floor of the old BNZ building in Warkworth.
2003 Darkroom was set up: a design studio creating many forms of digital content (2D and 3D animation, motion graphics, live action) and showing it on all kinds of crazy screen technologies.
During the mid-90s the dance party scene in Auckland was in its infancy. Bruce had just got back from travelling, and knew what was possible. Then some friends of his set up Kog Transmissions, a nowiconic music label who have produced the likes of Pitch Black, Concord Dawn and P Money.
By 2004 Bruce was working with Michael Mizrahi, event designer extraordinaire, to create the most jaw-dropping visuals money could buy for Louis Vuitton’s 150th birthday party celebrations in New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
“Kog took things to a new level,” says Bruce. “The parties needed a little something extra, though.” He had been experimenting with film making, editing them on VHS. He recalls, “I put together a little video as a bit of a laugh, using the theme music from The Professionals TV series. People loved it. And I thought, I could do this.”
This was just the beginning. Darkroom began to be known for its extraordinary ‘projection mapping’ techniques. Bruce explains: “Essentially you make a 3D template using a thing called a Lidar [laser/ radar] – a surveying instrument that measures distance using a laser. It creates what’s called a ‘point cloud’. With a few tweaks you can plug this digital information into a computer, map a digital file or piece of film on to it and project the whole thing on to a building, or indeed anything you like. Thanks to the Lidar mapping, the digital image will fit whatever you’ve mapped perfectly.”
A few years down the track, Bruce had teamed up with Mike Hodgson of Pitch Black and the two began to push technological boundaries. In

global re-brand of Bacardi. They’ve created a magical woodland glade in a marquee for Jessie J to perform in at a Google Zeitgeist gala dinner in Hertfordshire and – one of Bruce’s personal favourites – they projected an enormous 3D Christmas story on to the Madrid City Hall, enchanting over 100,000 people. Darkroom has done ‘fulldome’ projections inside a huge spherical structure for Audi in Madrid and on to the inside of a giant inflatable rugby ball in London for the Rugby World Cup. They’ve created mindboggling festival stages at the Sunburn Festival in Goa, at the ShangriLa stage at Glastonbury, and the stage graphics for London DJ Carl Cox’s summer club season in Ibiza. But it’s not all party-party; there’s been fine art involvement for Darkroom, too. Bruce has recently formed a creative relationship with Takashi Murakami, a well-known Japanese artist and producer. Through Takashi, Darkroom set up a projected seven-minute video for super-hip young Japanese artist Chiho Aoshima at The Seattle Art Museum, and Takashi is keen for more. Back home, thanks to Darkroom you can now take a 45-minute Les Mills

spin class in front of massive LED screens with eye-popping techno projections and pumping music (changed every three months). And with his early background in music video and many of his best mates involved, he’s very happy working on the biggest night in homegrown music: the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. 2015 was the 50th year of the awards, and Darkroom created a night to remember. “Using LED panels, we created the illusion of a stage set made of concrete and illuminated glass that we could use as a blank canvas,” says Bruce. “We’ve already started work on this year’s awards.” None of this would be possible of course without Bruce’s partner Emma Wolf, who works tirelessly behind the scenes, “keeping me in line and within budget,” Bruce grins. Emma and their baby Leo will be waving goodbye to Bruce at the end of May however, as he jets off to Europe for the 2016 Venice Architectural Biennale (see the article in our Arts section) and then onto Ibiza to work the VJ booth at Carl Cox’s last-ever summer party season at iconic club, Space. It’s a tough life, but perhaps he’ll manage to squeeze in some fun. www.darkroom.tv

whangaripo valley farmstay WORDS kathy

Jo Barnes has been a banker and a primary school teacher, but now she’s a full-time cheesemaker, farmstay host and future sheep-milker. Jo, husband Rob and their three children moved to 90 acres in the Whangaripo Valley just over two years ago. They first came here when camping in the valley over the 2013 New Year. Jo was (and still is) working for the Whangaripo Buffalo Cheese Co and they camped on the buffalo farm. The peaceful valley was an eye-opener. “I saw Rob relax for the first time in ages,” Jo recalls. “We just knew we needed to be here.”

The land has glorious, wide views of the valley. However, the existing accommodation was only a small two-bedroom house, which the family (including three kids) and Jo’s mum shared for three months while they built rather stylish ply cabin. “I’d be lying if I said it was an easy winter,” Jo admits. “But we all made it through in one piece.” Jo and Rob had a thing about villas. They found an ideal one in Cockburn Street, Grey Lynn. Built in 1913, it used to be a grand old dame, but needed some TLC. It was trucked up, pre-dawn, in two pieces and put together “like magic,” as Jo says. An unexpected treasure was discovered by their builder (local Richard Denton), hidden under shingles: immaculate wooden curlicues and newell posts. They were installed in the front porch – apart from four of the posts, which the couple plan to transform into a four-poster bed. Jo’s mum was keen to have her own place, so they found a 1908 tram carriage in Kaiwaka (as you do) that had once run at the bottom of Queen Street. It was, and still is, easily transported. They converted it into a perfectly cosy home for one. And with a long-term vision of their farmstay in mind, they whipped up a second ply cabin with mezzanine bedroom accessed via a sturdy ladder; each sleeps four. Another online treasure was soon installed – a ‘mushroomery’ in a bid to grow oyster mushrooms. Jo’s mum got stuck into this, and it certainly worked – the pale, frilly mushrooms pushed their way out through the holes in their laundry basket homes just like bought ones. But sadly they were too expensive for their market so, philosophical and resourceful, they repurposed the mushroom house into a cute kitchenette for their guests. Since this was going to be a farmstay, animals were required. But they couldn’t be just any animals. Jo had been encouraged by Annie of the

Whangaripo Buffalo Cheese Co to find a certain breed of sheep from Lebanon – Awassi. They can produce a staggering seven litres of milk a day – almost the same as a buffalo – and the composition’s very similar. To Jo’s astonishment they found a couple on TradeMe – and added two East Friesians as well. Four turned into 17 at last count, and Jo plans to start milking next season. There are plans to combine sheep and buffalo milk to make a hard cheese to add to the Whangaripo Buffalo Cheese Co’s range. Jo also tracked down Saddleback and Berkshire pigs – the latter are the only pigs to produce marbled pork. “My piggies had an unexpected visitor last breeding season,” Jo tells us. “We saw a big wild boar wandering around one evening and the next morning he was in with our girls. He made fantastic bacon!” Jo and Rob’s kids (Alex 10; Poppy, 8 and Molly 6½) have not been overly shielded from the ‘circle of life’. There’s buffalo and lamb home-kill in their freezer. Jo says their own animals are loved and cared for right up to the time they are humanely and respectfully slaughtered. “If you’re going to eat meat, that’s the best way to do it, for sure.” The kids go to the local Tomarata school, which gets rave reviews from this ex-teacher. “Academically it’s great. Agricultural Day is fantastic – Molly won with one of our Awassi lambs last year. The kids still make miniature gardens and vegetable animals! And our whopper fireworks night is a must – BYO wine and deckchairs.” Next summer the cabins will really come into their own. They’re only 20 minutes from Matakana and Pakiri beach, perfect for families or surfers. Guests can collect their own eggs from Jo’s flock of 40 bantam chooks to have with their free-range bacon. And they’ll love the other gorgeous locals – ducks, goats, two donkeys, a couple of horses and the latest addition: two buffalo calves, Tank and Paintpot. “These are my forever buffalo,” says Jo. “These guys won’t be going near a freezer, ever.” Facebook: The Dent-ed Barn | M: 021 809 780 | T: 09 423 9327

new & noted Chiropractors get a huge Boost Congratulations to Boost Chiropractic who at the end of April was awarded the title of New Zealand’s Best Emerging Practice 2016 by the NZ Chiropractors Association. This is the first year for the Excellence Awards. Dr Tom Vaughan, family and sports specialist at Boost, says they were ecstatic to receive the title. “It certainly validates all the hard work that goes into starting a business from scratch.” Dr Chanelle Rhodes, pregnancy and pediatric expert at the practice says, “The other finalists were all from the big cities, so we really are over the moon to know that we have such a great service outside of any CBD in the country!” Boost Chiropractic 16 Alnwick Street, Warkworth | 09 425 9888 www.boostchiro.co.nz

Home is where the heart is
Congratulations to the very stylish Fiona McGeough, who has just been given a new job: manager of the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market. Long-time Market Manager Michael Kessell has gone travelling, and Fiona, with ten years running Music in Parks behind her (as well as running the Sunday Vintage Markets for the last 18 months), was perfectly placed to step into his shoes. “I’d like to turn the markets into a zero waste event, based on the permaculture ideas of local Trish Allen,” Fiona says, “It’s great that people can really eat local at the markets, but we need to clean up our act.”
There’s a new home store opening soon in Matakana Village – called ‘Matakana Home’. Sally Marshall of the Jewel Box and Small Works Gallery will curate a collection of relaxed but high-end interior design and fabulous one-off pieces. She’ll be presenting a mostly natural palette of whites, greys, soft blues and beiges but the collection will be angled towards a degree of practicality (slip covers you can wash!). ‘Comfortable and timeless’ will be key. Watch this space for more news of opening times in the coming weeks. Matakana Home | Shop 3 | Matakana Village

SITUATIONS VACANT
The derelict Leigh Pub has been bought. Alan and Jasmin Macdonald from Wellington (he’s an engineer/builder, she’s been in hospitality and PR) have plans to provide the community with a multi-venue function centre, campervan park, market place for seafood, arts and crafts, and five funky beach-style motel units (all subject to consent). These last however, should be ready by spring. There’ll be no bar though, the Macdonalds sensibly deciding that the two current alcohol venues (Leigh Bar and the Leigh Sawmill Café) are enough. The pair are keen to have the community involved in their plans, which they presented at a recent community meeting.
Hungry Elephant is an innovative, organic hospitality business opening soon. We’re based on Matakana’s ‘Golden Mile’, surrounded by vineyards and ten minutes from the beaches. Accommodation available if needed. We offer a beautiful, sociable, dynamic working environment and we’re looking for these special people to complete our team: • Chef • Naturopath • Café Manager

ransom winery’s winter pigGY Junction can no longer resist the call for fireside dining at Ransom. The new winter menu is just out and it sounds delectable. Their trademark platters have now moved into warm roasted vegetable salads. Hot soups on the menu may include creamy carrot and orange or leek and pear. Ransom has an interesting new wine too. Dubbed The Compleat Pig, it’s created with wild yeast from Pinot Gris grapes. The skins are left in for a short time and it’s unfiltered, which gives it a complex flavour and orange tint. No doubt it looks gorgeous by firelight…

Right: The lounge flows through to the outdoor living space.
There probably aren’t many builders who have a degree in Philosophy and English, but Ryan O’Malley of Little Tree Construction is one of them. Does it help? He grins. “Maybe in the realisation that as a builder you’re constantly fighting entropy. Things don’t naturally want to come together – except when we do them of course! But once you accept that philosophically, it can make the hassles easier to work around.” Little Tree was set up over fifteen years ago with the idea of being a ‘conscious’ construction company. “The building industry can be pretty brutal. It’s wasteful, toxic and expensive, and I wanted to try and do things a bit differently,” says Ryan. “But you start out with grandiose ideas and then you hit the real world. You can’t fix it all – but you can still try and do your bit.” Ryan and his partner Rachel (a marketing and design specialist) moved to Brick Bay seven years ago. The house they’re living in was designed with Ryan’s best mate from university, award-winning architect Dominic Glamuzina. Together they were building fabulous, top of the line homes around the Auckland region. But their own place, although it looks high-spec, was not high-budget due to Ryan’s tight control of the materials and process. With this in mind, around 2013 Ryan and Rachel decided to test a market for specially-designed, smaller, boutique homes that would look architect-designed (because they were) but didn’t have the price tag you might expect. Ryan, Rachel and Dominic put a lot of time into the perfect design. They’d think they had it, but one of them would find a flaw and it was back to the drawing board. But after a false start or two it’s finally happening: they’ve got not one, but two different workable designs. And Ryan’s halfway through his first build in Matakana. “I’m stoked,” he admits. “It’s been a long process but it’s nice to be sure of the outcome.”
10
11
Rachel’s happy too – she’s been dying to get her teeth into the interior design and start marketing, but has had to wait it out. (It’s not all bad though – while she was waiting, she’s been designing the entire look and brand of the new Sawmill Brewery.) A big part of Little Tree Homes will be their high Homestar rating for energy efficiency. During the long design phase the plans were sent to an efficiency expert, who gave them the big tick. Houses will be sited for maximum sun to heat the slab and provide passive energy. Big windows are all double-glazed. There’ll be options also for levels of energy efficiency – this new build started out as off-the-grid for Ryan’s client but they’ve dialled it back to solar. Happily, Ryan’s well-placed for news of innovation: his brother-in-law owns solar specialists Reid Technology. Since he hates waste, Ryan tries to plan to industry sizes to avoid it as much as possible. On his building sites, he doesn’t just have one skip for rubbish. He likes to have bins for glass, plastic, steel and paper. “It’s not always easy to get tradies to walk the extra few steps,” he says. “But I only want to be taking one skip to the tip at the end of a job.” Ryan and Dominic know well what parts of a house can be built with careful economy and also where no shortcuts should ever be made – the cladding and the joinery fall into that bracket. “We’re building these places to last,” Ryan affirms. “Joinery is the first thing to crash if you go cheap – you’re using it all the time, so it has to be good. And we want to maximise those features that will make it feel architectural, without blowing the budget.” The O’Malleys are big admirers of Scandinavian design, and Little Tree Homes will reflect this. There’ll be various options for cladding, but this first one will fit both their design and sustainability ethos particularly well, being clad with storm-felled beech from the west coast of the South Island. Meanwhile the family is loving the house that was their design yardstick. Nearing the classic ‘seven year itch’, Rachel says they were thinking of selling. “But the location, the view and the house itself has spoilt us for anything else.” Their three kids Noah 11, Ari 9 and Matai 7, agree. They can run down through the bush to the beach, past Brick Bay sculptures. And at the moment all they can see is sea, paddocks and a couple of lovely old barns. Long may it last. Two prominent local builders comment on their experience of managing builds on the Matakana Coast.
These days, Rod prefers to do one job at a time. “On a big project, weeks can go by without being able to get onto the tools, but I still love to do that as much as possible.”
Rod Cooper likes solving the puzzles that new buildings present. “Sometimes I think, jeez, how am I going to do this. But, it’s like eating an elephant – it’s just one mouthful at a time. And, at the end, you get to see a beautiful building.”
Steve Haycock, of Steve Haycock Construction, agrees that the local area has all the skilled contractors needed for these big, expensive, technical builds. His work on the Lawrie House, featured on Grand Designs NZ, involved all local subbies. “That job was really challenging and they came up with goods.”
You’ve seen the work of Rod Cooper Construction because his buildings include the Matakana Cinemas, Matakana toilets, Matakana Country Park and Koru House (Junction, March 2016). Rod has lived in the area for 35 years. “When I arrived here, you could buy a beach-front section at Omaha for $25,000 and clients were building simple cottages. Since then, it has progressively developed to architecturally-designed homes worth millions of dollars.” He’s eager to acknowledge the excellent subcontractors available in this area who have raised their skill levels to match the modern technical builds. Rod also has a lot of admiration for people who have the courage to invest in big projects, entrepreneurs like John Baker and Richard Didsbury, and creative home owners like Lindsay Scott and Brian McPhun.
Steve is full-time on project management with three large, prolonged and technical builds on the go. He works hard to make sure that everyone enjoys the job as much as possible, and that includes the client and architect. “Omaha has been like a trial ground for architects. They’ve been pulling out all the stops to make interesting houses there. It’s been a boon for us to get the opportunity to work on these things.” Steve has an eye on the future as he builds the skill base of his team. “I’ve got a lot of really good young guys coming through. It’s good for the future.” Rod Cooper Construction: 021 224 4360 Steve Haycock Construction: www.stevehaycockconstruction.co.nz

LUKE
W ILLIA M S O N
Clockwise from top left: Colin takes a well earned break; Sculptureum entrance; boulder pillars at a Point Wells property; the fireplace at Omaha Golf Club.
Colin Christie learned the art of building stone walls in the highlands of his Scottish home. Traditionally, a small bottle of whiskey was left inside a wall for anyone who came along later to do repairs. In a variation of this tradition, Colin tucked over $100 into the fireplaces he constructed at the Stables Restaurant – ponder that if you get caught short on your bill. From the new retaining wall at Algies Bay, to the gateway and plinth for the new ‘Sculptureum’ at Omaha Flats, and the fireplace at Omaha Golf Club, Colin’s work is all around you. Colin’s real passion is for traditional dry stone walls (no mortar, just careful placement of well shaped rocks) but the building boom on the Matakana Coast means that he has clients lined up for commissions for walls, fireplaces and more in private homes.
Colin’s skill is to understand what sort of stone will work best and how to work with the contours of a given environment. His work is bespoke and that of a specialist. His wife, Alison, explains, “There is a lot of background work involved that clients don’t always see – design, hand-selecting stone at the quarry, cartage and careful stone selection again once on site. When all those things are in place, a wall can go up surprisingly quickly.” If you want to see Colin at work, he is currently doing a massive restoration job at Auckland’s Waikaraka Park, or catch him in a couple of months when he starts work on the development at the back of the Matakana Village Butchery and bakery on Matakana Valley Road. www.scottishstonewalls.co.nz

WINTER IN THE GARDEN We all know that spring is when your garden looks its best, but winter is the best season for pruning and planting trees. It’s good to get all those jobs done you never have time for over the busy summer. We’re lucky enough to have permaculture guru Trish Allen in our community so we asked her what she’s up to at the moment in her garden. And we also have a roundup of plant nurseries in the area – for your planting pleasure!
Orchard landscape designed and implemented by Forgotten Fruits at Paparoa.
INDIVIDUALLY HAND CARVED FIRE SURROUNDS IN NATURAL STONE
I tend to start by cleaning up the leftover summer crops – put the residue in your compost. Don’t forget to layer it up with green, nitrogen rich materials and brown carbon-rich materials, and by springtime, your compost will be ready to go. Plant winter veg! Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, beetroot, celery, kale, mizuna, onions, broad beans, peas, shallots, silverbeet, spinach, coriander and winter varieties of lettuce and mesclun. This is also the time to get your garlic in – on the shortest day traditionally, but earlier if you like – and if you haven’t already done so, your strawberries. If you’re resting your vege beds, top them up with compost then mulch well, or plant a soil improver crop to condition your soil. Plant broad beans and peas, which will fix nitrogen in the soil and increase fertility. June 5 this year is when the Matariki star cluster appears, a group of seven stars also known as the Pleiades; this indicates the Maori New Year has begun. Matariki is celebrated with the planting of new trees and crops, signalling new beginnings. It could become a family tradition to do the winter garden clean up altogether to celebrate Matariki – at least for one day of the year!

In the orchard, prune and feed your fruit trees (except peaches, plums, and nectarines which need to be pruned in summer to prevent silver leaf disease). If your trees have had leaf curl, after pruning apply copper spray to prevent the infection overwintering in buds. And last but not least, give your garden tools some TLC. Do they need sharpening, cleaning or repairing? It’s a great job to do before you put them away for the winter! PDC Course: Trish will be teaching a 13-day residential Permaculture Design Course at the Te Moata Retreat in Coromandel from May 28 to June 10. There may be some day attendances available however. Call Te Moata Retreat on 07 868 8798 to discuss.

WINTER IN THE GARDEN
Trish’s garden Trish has had a bumper crop of persimmons this year – driving around the fertile Matakana Coast at this time of year you’ll spot trees laden with the glowing orange fruit. Now’s a great time to plant your own fruit trees. “It’s most important you choose trees with rootstock that suits your soil type – talk to your nursery for help with this,” says Trish. “My top tip is if you have clay, don’t dig a deep hole – it acts like a sump and can’t drain. Dig a shallow hole, make cuts in the sides of the hole for drainage, and plant trees on mounded, compost-rich soil. Feed them well, and make sure you stake them solidly until the roots have a chance to establish.” Left: In the foreground, Trish’s first crop of young garlic is already up.

WINTER IN THE GARDEN
Patrick and Louise’s garden
Sandy’s garden
Patrick had never grown vegetables before he set up this extraordinary garden on the hill above Warkworth 18 months ago. He went to one of the set-up meetings for Ooooby (www.ooooby.org) in Matakana and thought, “I can do that.” Informed by the Internet, he and partner Louise set about creating a market garden based on organic principles to supply the local market. “Some things worked, some didn’t,” Patrick shrugs. “We’ve got a great thing going now with baby turnips – so sweet and crunchy!” Ooooby is still happening in Matakana, but the packing branch has gone back to Auckland, so if you’re looking for super-fresh veg, get in touch via Facebook: Patrick and Louise Warkworth Growers.
One of Junction’s photographers, Sandy Meharry, has a gorgeous garden up the hill from Matakana. She and partner Murray (a landscape gardener and builder) put 18 years into creating their various ‘outdoor rooms’ around their property. The macrocarpa beds were made by Murray and filled with various combinations of local soil, bush detritus, seaweed from local beaches and the neighbour’s animal manure. They espaliered apple trees along the fence (recycled from local sheep yards) to both conserve space and to give the young trees support against westerlies. Sandy says, “The pot belly stove under the pergola is the heart of the vege garden – it provides a spot to relax and appreciate our labours!”
Above: Patrick’s garden is terraced down the hill towards distant groves of kauri.

Organic Herbs and Seedlings
Liberty Park Native Tree Nursery
As certified organic growers, Mandy and Craig produce lush, healthy plants, growing a wide range of vegetable, flower and herb seedlings for the home gardener. The range includes popular microgreens, which can be found garnishing meals in most local restaurants and cafés. Check out their Facebook pages ‘Organic Herbs and Seedlings’ and ‘Organic Edible Garden’ for weekly webisodes and gardening advice. They can be found at Matakana Farmers’ Market and New World Warkworth. Email Mandy for your full product list. mandy@organicseedlings.co.nz www.organicseedlings.co.nz
Liberty Park is a wholesale nursery, but they are open to the public. Mainly catering to local landscapers and gardeners, the nursery specialises in natives, with a small selection of non-natives. Plants suitable to the local climate are all grown on-site from their own cuttings or locally collected seeds. Manager Rhonda, with Carola and Cherri, operate Liberty Park and between them have worked at the nursery for around 28 years now. PROTEA PATCH
Bali Garden
Dave Smitheram and Carol van Dyke are new owners of the Protea Patch (Matakana Sculptural Habitat - The Secret Garden is here too – entry by koha). They have one of the widest ranges of the Proteaceae family in NZ. These hardy plants are perfect for planting now and will flower throughout winter – great for bees. Propagating at the nursery, Dave and Carol provide an ongoing supply of protea along with other low maintenance coastal plants. They specialise in online orders. The team at the nursery are happy to advise; email inquiries are welcome.
Bali Garden is an importer from Bali of garden statuary and outdoor furniture; the nine-hectare property also showcases a great range of palms and cycads for sale. Bali Garden functions as a commercial retail space and nursery, set up as a lush, tranquil Balinese garden and open for visitors (best to call first). With a “good network of support within the industry”, owner Robyn Alexander specialises working with garden and landscape designers and commission work - all infused with the relaxed tropical vibe that the Balinese style brings to outdoor living.

Matakana Palms
Tumbleweed Coastal Plants
Bruce Whistler has lived on this land on Omaha Flats Road for over 40 years. He grew up here, on the family sheep farm. It’s a bit different now, but Bruce enjoys running the nursery operation of Matakana Palms while partner Raewyn creates superb sub-tropical landscaping. Their big sellers include Pitt Island Nikau from the Chathams (nice and hardy), Kentia, Bangalow and Date palms, but they stock at least ten other varieties. They also do cycads, Mexican and Australian grass trees, dragon trees and bromeliads. Their range of landscaping supplies is legendary, with exhydroponic, coconut fibre garden mix and bark mulch being high on the list.
Operating since 2000, husband and wife team John Davies and Wendy Schick of Tumbleweed Coastal Plants initially opened as a plant retail outlet, but soon saw the potential for a professional landscaping service. This resulted in their move to a larger site in Matakana in 2002 to allow for a greater supply of services. The duo offers a wealth of plant knowledge, John being a fourth generation horticulturalist and Wendy having over 35 years experience in the industry. Tumbleweed now incorporates a retail plant centre as well as a full landscape supply yard, providing complete landscaping services from design to installation.

Matakana Coast market going from strength to strength I n t rod u c t i o n
by Mark Macky
The real estate market in the Matakana Coast area is in robust health. There aren’t many properties on the market and we are seeing strong buyer competition which has led to some healthy price increases in the last 12 months. The majority of the buyers Bayleys are dealing with are coming north from the city. Prices in Auckland are at record levels and many people are profit taking in town and enjoying the value for money that they can get for a piece of paradise in Rodney North. The lures of our beautiful part of the country are clear – lovely rolling countryside, stunning beaches, great local amenities and attractions and a strong community spirit that has mostly been lost in the city. It’s no wonder so many people are wanting to call our little part of the world home.

What’s the next 12 months going to hold? With interest rates at record lows, the economy robust and immigration into Auckland at record highs, I can’t see the dynamic changing in the coming year. The Auckland Unitary Plan will be confirmed in the next few months, and this will see restrictions on further lifestyle subdivision which will only further strangle supply of the 1-2ha blocks that so many of the lifestylers are wanting to buy. If you’re looking for some good real estate advice to make some decisions in the current market, the Bayleys team would be only too happy to help. Mark Macky, Director – Bayleys in the North T: 09 425 7640 | M: 021 772 711 www.bayleys.co.nz | www.bayleysinthenorth.co.nz Local offices in Warkworth, Matakana and Omaha.
Painting the Town Green… The stars are shining brightly in Matakana Green – all seven of them. Sustainable, eco-friendly stars! Matakana Green’s housing development stipulates that all dwellings must achieve a minimum Homestar rating of seven stars. Homestar is a rating process developed by the Building Research Association of NZ and the NZ Green Building Council. David Wildish from Catalyst Homes is marketing the land and also offers eco-friendly builds. To put that ranking into perspective, he says, “There is possibly just one home in the country with a 10-star ranking – generally new builds sit around the three-star mark. A seven will see you seldom flicking on a heater.” He continues, “Dwellings of this nature have by default created an amazing community of like-minded, enviro-conscious people; everyone’s on a first-name basis.” Prices start from $350,000 for land only, up to around $900,000 for land and house packages. Lot sizes vary from 800sqm to 1400sqm. Be quick – all but one site has sold, with two under contract. david@matakanagreen.com | Image courtesy of Catalyst Homes
Mad on Matakana… Laly Haddon Place and Tamahunga Drive require little introduction. This exclusive subdivision in Matakana is split into stunning country blocks on one side, and 40 residential sites adjacent. All but a couple of the 64 sites in the subdivision have sold. An absolutely mouth-watering executive home is currently under construction; proudly marketed by Shailenne Parkes of Bayleys, this large cedar home and its 1.1 hectares of prime land on the ridge, has a price tag of $2.48m. SNELLS BEACH If you’re after a beachside retirement, investment or just to live on a gorgeous part of the Matakana Coast, there’s a new development at the north end of Snells Beach. ‘Whisper Cove’ will soon have five brand new, single level homes. Under construction now, they’re low maintenance, on level landscaped grounds, and all are three-bedroom. It’s a short stroll from the calm waters and lovely long beach at Snells – great for walkers! And if you have a boat, the ramp is very close. It’s ten minutes to both Warkworth and Matakana where there’s an increasingly great choice of cafés and restaurants, wineries, shopping and theatres. And the marvellous Brick Bay Winery and Sculpture Trail at the top of the road. These will be on the market from $825,000. Agents: Steffan Meyer 021 055 4346 | Dallas Honey 027 477 9957

A Subdivision On Point! A prestigious development in Point Wells has gardening types swooning. Just like the peat soil is of high quality, so too is the design of housing unfolding here. It will certainly be one to watch as both garden and architecture takes shape. Mike Pero salesperson, Angela Wain, says, “The subdivision kicked off two years ago and to date all of stage one has sold, with some changing hands a second time. There have been two recent 5,000sqm waterfront sites selling for $2.5m. Sections of 1000sqm are on the market for $550,000, with house and land sites ticking over at the $1.4 – $1.6m mark”. Ponds, shared walkways, seating and common areas are part of the appeal. Angela is finding many buyers are ex-Omaha enthusiasts who enjoy the more permanent resident profile of Point Wells, along with a thriving community. angela.wain@mikepero.com
Rosa Villa Lane is Blooming Historical Puhoi Village has soul, dishing out a delightful bohemian vibe. It must be the river setting, farmers’ market, and that iconic Kiwi pub… Interest in Puhoi has swelled as citysiders reach out for a new lifestyle, one the locals dub as being ‘close to Auckland but a world away’. Sally Brown from Mike Pero has fielded plenty of enquiries from lifestyle-hungry folk keen to explore a new subdivision in the making. “Once a farm of about 52 hectares, Rosa Villa Lane is a premium subdivision carved into 12 lots. Think post and rail fencing, gorgeous rural outlooks and an easy walk to the village.” Sale prices have ranged from $600,000 through to $825,000 for 2 hectares. At the time of writing, just two lots remain available. sally.brown@mikepero.com
lifestyle in pakiri There are still more affordable options for people who want to get a little further off the beaten track. Bare land, houses and lifestyle blocks are all available on the fringes of the main centres on the Matakana Coast. Recently four one-hectare sections at Pakiri within a five-minute drive of the beach went for between $260K and $290K. They face west with big valley views and are 25 minutes from Matakana. Melanie Eade says “The land in Pakiri suited our needs: space for our young boys, close to the beach, not far from Matakana… and it’s beautiful!” But Jeneen Binsted of Harcourts who sold these properties warns: “The proposed Auckland Unitary Plan Independent Hearings Panel is working on submissions right now, which by the end of September could result in Auckland Council clamping down hard on subdivision in Rodney.” The message? Be quick to buy lifestyle. jeneen.binsted@harcourts.co.nz

Unbridled Potential This world-class equestrian facility is a bit of a stunner. Stable 88 is a year-round, Olympic-sized, indoor equestrian facility with a lovely home set on around five hectares only five minutes from Matakana. Bill Noble, Horse of the Year Dressage Winner 2014 reckoned, “the riding surface is second to none – it’s a great facility of European quality in a beautiful setting.” Stable 88 has hosted NZ and offshore riders, dressage trainers and riding groups, film crews and car rally groups. Income streams have been brainstormed by the agents: equine-assisted therapy? Themed weddings? Community events, a show stud? Since it’s the only facility of its type in the north, the potential is high.

A good indication of business success lies in the level of repeat and referral business. This is certainly how Shailenne Parkes measures her own performance – she understands that a relationship treated with respect, along with a focus on an outstanding result, leads to loyal clients and favourable word of mouth. Proof too of Shailenne’s dedication to the industry, is her achievement of Top Salesperson for Bayleys Warkworth (2014/15). Whilst the award is something she is proud of, Shailenne prefers to look ahead – focusing on the next property match, negotiating a fine outcome, or outlining a dynamic marketing campaign. ARTS
art on the matakana coast THE EARLY YEARS It was in 1977 that Anthony Morris and Sue James first put Matakana on the creative map. They’d bought a run-down piece of land in Matakana that had a priceless treasure hidden under the gorse: clay. Ant had a vision, founded in potteries he’d worked at in England, of a ‘creative community of artisans’. He loved the idea of a process that required a group of different talents who contribute to stages of making, creating a whole. “The potter’s work,” he likes to say “reflects the imagination, talent and skill of all who participate in this creative community”. For decades, Morris and James Pottery was pretty much the only reason anyone came to Matakana, apart from the beaches. But then a wider creative community began to stir – business owners prompted by a need to lure more visitors to spend money, artists by a need to show their work. In 2004, Richard and Christine Didsbury began to shape Matakana into the arts destination it is today. It began, as many things do on the Matakana Coast, with wine. Continued overleaf... Top: Ant Morris, below: Christine Didsbury.
‘
It doesn’t matter which end of the continuum we are at. From Fine Arts to simple artisan - we all have integrity. Our art, our craft, our buildings, our village and even our spaces have depth. Kitsch does not have a place at Matakana.

SLEEK AND STYLISH There have been some changes at Morris & James Pottery over the last year: some new faces, a new website and a fresh look at the design. The pottery, established nearly forty years ago, is a much-loved Matakana arts destination. Fans will be happy to hear that the tradition of bright classic colours and Kiwiana imagery will stay, but there’s a new range to add to Morris and James’ long legacy of ceramic excellence. Colours changed a few years ago to a lighter, brighter theme, and now they’re evolving again with the help of new marketing manager Amanda Penton (right). She’s been working with the dream team of Ian Foote (head potter) Nick Charlton (designer) and Mike Rose (ceramicist) on the new colours and shapes. Tableware and pots have a soft, natural palette complemented by a few muted colours. The clay, techniques and expert use of glaze are unchanged – but the look is crisp and contemporary. Check out the sleek new styling at this iconic pottery: the Harvest Sale is on now until Queens Birthday weekend, with tours and tastings on Saturday June 4. In 2004, what we now know as Brick Bay Winery and Sculpture Trail had been there for thirty years, much of it as a farm. The Didsburys had drunk their first vintage in 1998. But it was a little off the beaten track: Christine and Richard began to wonder how they could get more people to come and buy their rather excellent wine. They walked some of the best sculpture trails in the world. Their favourite was in Sussex – the Cass Sculpture Foundation at Goodwood Estate. They decided to try and build something similar, with a café attached – a gateway to the sculpture trail, and as the wine-tasting room. Architect Noel Lane built them the extraordinary Glass House – a work of art in its own right – and so it began. The Brick Bay Sculpture Trail opened in 2007, just after Art Matakana at The Matakana Country Park, which was set up by Bronwyn and Bill Harris to provide what’s become a hugely valuable art venue for locals. Around the same time, the farmers’ markets, cinema and new shops at Matakana were being built, providing more options – the beautiful Piece Gallery is now a mecca for glass, ceramics and handmade jewellery fans. The Vivian Gallery was next – rustic but elegant, it’s a purpose-built space in the Matakana countryside, and although it’s only a few years old, it’s hard to remember when we didn’t have it. There’s a social get-together at every exhibition opening; it’s a community event. Other, smaller galleries have joined the field over the years (see our new Art Stop Map on page 36). The Small Works Gallery in the Matakana Village is a recent arrival; owner Sally Marshall curates a broad range of art, prints, photography, sculpture and design. And hot on Sally Marshall’s heels is Jo Baker at Borgo di Chianti with her multi-disciplined Zen-inspired store in Warkworth. All have added more value to arts in the area. Chatting to these women gallery owners at The Vivian Gallery, it’s clear they are passionate and committed to their work. The Didsburys have been major patrons of the arts in New Zealand for decades. They’re about Bronwyn Harris, Art Matakana; Anna Didsbury, Brick Bay Sculpture Trail;

Bronwyn from Art Matakana says, “the art scene has evolved here hugely over my ten years in the business. We were only open at the weekend then but now it’s busy nearly all week. And there’s still so much scope for more: the artists who live around this area need more gallery spaces. In Pakiri alone there is so much talent; the Gossage family could have their own gallery!”

Sally Marshall agrees. “We’re also getting international visitors and sending a lot of work overseas. There’s a resurgence in people wanting art for their homes, I feel.” Jo Baker loves the mix she has in Matakana of the arts and the outdoors. “It’s all about gumboots and pearls. You do your outside chores and pop into the gallery when visitors arrive. It’s quite grounding…” Anna Didsbury, who at 37 is the youngest here, is General Manager of Brick Bay. Helen is up for it. “Having the space and facilities for artists when they know what they want is fantastic,” she says. Ant Morris would heartily approve of these discussions. The creative community of his 1970s vision is alive and thriving.

biennale brilliance The Venice Architecture Biennale 2016 launches on May 28. For only the second time, New Zealand is involved, and Junction is excited to report that two local creatives have solid roles in our exhibition. The focus this year is on what architecture can do to improve living conditions globally. The NZ installation is called Future Islands and consists of twenty-two 3D ‘islands’ made of lightweight composite materials, some of them several metres across. These will be suspended from the ceiling of the Palazzo Bollani in Venice. They were made by Tim Smyth’s innovative team at Core Builders Composites, the Warkworth-based company that built the America’s Cup racing yacht. Either on or suspended around these islands will be over 100 models of buildings created by architecture practices and students from around the country. “The exhibition expresses the diversity of contemporary New Zealand architecture, and of New Zealand society,” says Creative Director Charles Walker (Co-Director of the Colab research unit at AUT University). “Islands hold the promise of alternative ways of living, which are now more attractive and more necessary than ever.” An extra creative element is involved too: projections of moving images. Warkworth creative Bruce Ferguson (see our article on his company Darkroom in this issue) told us: “We’ll be projecting on to four of the islands. There’ll be some clouds and water reflections, but on one of the bigger islands (based on the Auckland Isthmus), we’re mapping rolling hills with volcanic cones and roaming cows. It evolves to be covered by sprawling urbanisation – but then is submerged under rising sea levels.” The six-month long Biennale attracts quarter of a million visitors. 88 participants from 37 countries are involved – it’s regarded as the Olympics of architecture. Happily, a little piece of Warkworth will be there, too. NZ: www.venice.nzia.co.nz | Italy: www.labiennale.org/en/architecture

The interior is fabulous – designed by wellknown local artist Virginia Leonard and built by Bryn Sutherland after hours, it features orchid colours, a wittily-papered feature wall, enormous swaying lampshades from Madder and Rouge, wall vases by local ceramicist Morgan Haines – and a huge, single Virginia Leonard piece: her buckled and beautiful take on a Willow-Pattern vase. “This soup is unique and it’s manufactured by us, the oyster farmers. With the encouragement of Al Brown and Kyle Street from Auckland’s Depot Eatery and Oyster Bar, we set off on the soup journey in 2013. winter wellness for dogs WORDS
AN D Y
GA R C IA
This time of year is fun for dog owners – gone are those pesky ‘get off the beach by 9am’ laws. We can run them any time we like (but under control of course!). Winter brings its own challenges however, so to keep your dog happy and healthy, here are some tips from Andy Garcia.
Winter is coming, with it comes a shift in the weather. Temperatures are dropping, days are getting shorter, and rainfall is more frequent here in the North Rodney District. As we head into winter, adapting to the season can be very important to the health of our pets. With these shorter days and cold weather, it can be easy to want to stay inside, but exercising is critical in a dogs life on both a physical and emotional level and should be done daily. Exercise can reduce the stress levels and also keeps your dogs fit, limber and healthy. Daily walks can be very beneficial to keeping the digestive system functioning properly. This also builds on the relationship between you and your dog.
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR dogs Frankincense or Lavender

During the rainy season, it is vital that your dogs have a dry shelter to get warm and out of the wind. Dogs can also catch a chill which will put stress on the immune system and may lead to illness.

Hygiene is also very important. Monthly baths and routine ear cleaning can help keep your dog healthy. Moist, muddy paws can lead to bacterial and fungal build up. Keeping the dogs paws clean and dry can assist with optimal wellness.
Cedar wood + lemongrass powerful insect repellent
Maintaining a healthy diet and adding foods that are high in antioxidants and omegas can also play a role in boosting your dog’s immune system. Another powerful but simple technique is to add certified pure therapeutic essential oils into your dogs wellness routine. The quality of the oil is always important along with details of use such as dilution, size of dog and oils per individual case.

The Ti Point trail is one of my favourite short walks. It’s like going out into Omaha Bay in a boat – you get unique perspectives on Omaha Beach, Takatu Peninsula and Tawharanui. Even arriving at the Ti Point wharf is beautiful with all the boats quietly swinging on their moorings. I had tui and fantails chatting in my left ear, and the sea gurgling and swooshing around the boulders in my right ear. The groves of old pohutukawa, with their gnarled arms reaching out towards the ocean, are a real feature of this walk. There are also gorgeous enclaves of nikau and varied coastal native plants. Take the time to savour each view as the trail bends slowly towards the outer Gulf. The path is rough in places and good shoes are advisable, but this is a great outing for kids, so pack a picnic and your togs, and soak up this exquisite walking experience. Duration is 1 hour 20 mins return.
Aotearoa’s Midwinter New Year WORDS
S op h i e
B a rc l a y
June heralds the arrival of the constellation Matariki (Pleiades), and with it, the Māori New Year. Visible in the early-dawn, winter sky, Matariki was traditionally a time to take stock, remember and celebrate those who have passed during the year, for festivities and kite flying and also a time to think about the harvest of the year to come. The brightness of the stars signaled the planting season ahead, and determined which crops were planted when.
Since the early 2000s, the holiday has seen a revival in Aotearoa and there are now hundreds of events (many of which are free) in Auckland alone. Highlights include the Mana Aute Kite Day at Ōrākei marae, hangi-making, flax-weaving and tāonga pūoro (traditional Maori instruments) workshops, planting days, arts, guided forest walks and film festivals. It’s a chance to celebrate what is uniquely ours - and to see why the indigenous culture of our country is a tāonga.

Mahurangi Kindergarten in Warkworth follows a values-based philosophy. It includes the appreciation, practice and acknowledgement of beauty, joy, respect and compassion. The practice of mindfulness has become part of their day as children work best with a sense of belonging, rituals and routines. This helps to develop wellbeing and security – and teachers find it really does encourage meaningful learning. Mindfulness is ‘the awareness that emerges through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experiences, moment by moment’. It’s well-documented that mindfulness for children has the potential to enhance children’s attention and focus, improve memory, self-acceptance, self-management skills and self-understanding. Children can sometimes be rushed, with no time to marvel at the world around them. For a young child, everything is new. At Mahurangi Kindergarten, children are given the time, space and skills to marvel at the world. It’s a great thing to teach children the skills to find joy in every moment! “If you want to be happy, be.” – Henry David Thoreau.

matakana community garden words
Zo e
Clayton
Robin Barclay and Trish Allen, the two who started up the Matakana Community Garden, insist that success was all about finding local support first. After deciding on a small plot of land in need of love beside the Matakana Hall, they spent the next three months “getting the word out”. Like seeds being sown, flyers were distributed and calls made to local businesses; donations and support started flooding in. A digger and a skip, fruit trees and seeds, building materials, later a much-needed water tank. But most vitally – locals began to give their time. November 2012 saw the Garden’s first working bee, “...and in a morning, the garden was built!” Since then it has doubled, or even tripled in size. Applications for funding were made and approved by the local board. Trish and Robin had to come up with a vision statement – a compulsory part of applying for a council grant. Their vision? “A place where members of the community can gather to garden, grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers, share ideas and relax.” Sounds good to us! Coming soon: a new vege stall at the gardens, bringing fresh produce to the local community. Find Matakana Community Garden on Facebook or pop in every Monday, 9am.
How we feel about our skin can be complicated, but the treatments don’t have to be. One of the most common concerns among kiwi women is pigmentation and age spots; we know how important skin confidence is, that’s why we developed our skin correcting programmes. At Caci, we have over 21 years’ experience in skin and understand that not all treatments are suited to your skin type, so we have a range of programmes to ensure that we are treating your specific skin concerns, and achieving the best possible results.

dd at leigh welcome home Dave Dobbyn played recently to a packed house in a last-minute, pop-up concert at the Leigh Sawmill Café, a venue he has been absent from for over 14 years. On the back of the recent release of his latest album Harmony House , Dave thrilled the crowd with new tracks Angelina and Waiting for a Voice . These sat comfortably amongst a set full of classics: Be Mine Tonight, Welcome Home, and Whaling to name just a few.

His confidence and skill was invigorating and watching him enjoying the fruits of a welldeserved 40-year career was a pleasure. It has been a while since I’ve seen crowd surfing, but this was just another reflection of the crowd’s appreciation of Dave Dobbyn’s performance. The band was electrifying in its own right – each member a highly skilled musician – most notably Jesse Sheehan, who opened with his own captivating set. As for the man himself, I don’t know why I was surprised to see how humble he was with his fans. Seeing him posing for photos during his performance and staying for a meet and greet to sign autographs after the show, it was confirmed to this fan: Dave Dobbyn truly is a national treasure. www.davedobbyn.co.nz | www.sawmillcafe.co.nz

OUT AND ABOUT PUHOI PUB BIRTHDAY BASH It was a beautiful autumn afternoon and the punters turned out in droves for the 140th birthday celebrations at the Puhoi Pub. Bikers rubbed shoulders with retirees, tourists mingled with the locals as the Brendan Ham Band played some good old hoe-down, foot-stompin’ country music.

17 june The Brick Bay winter season of pop-up dining has swung into action again. Coming up on June 17 is the third one – emails have not gone out yet, so you still have time to go to the website and sign up for information. Many have found that the seasonally-inspired three-course dinners are highlights of their winters, and they do tend to sell out rapidly. May’s menu featured local Whangaripo buffalo – both meat and mozzarella – and the punters have been raving. the lady killers ~ live & kicking tour Three extraordinary divas: Tina Cross, Suzanne Lynch and Jackie Clarke are hitting the road as The Lady Killers for their ‘Live and Kicking’ tour. These beautiful women are NZ musical royalty at the peak of their powers, with talent and experience to burn. Having just had a sell-out concert series in Auckland, Tina, Suzie and Jackie are going to continue the party by taking the show around the country. They’ll be giving us their take on anthems from Queen, The Beach Boys, Neil Finn, Meghan Trainor, Dolly Parton, James Bay, Neil Young, Michael Jackson and more. ‘From a whisper to a scream, and everything in between’, a Lady Killers show is all sophistication but with plenty of laughs thrown in. Jackie says “We’re all so busy we have to go the lengths of arranging a tour to get together. So we’ll be squeezing as much fun out of this as we can – grab your BFFs and come along!” Thursday 16 June | Ascension Winery, Matakana Friday 17 June | Turner Centre, Kerikeri Tickets: www.theladykillers.co.nz | Facebook.com/TheLadyKillersNZ

Just over 6 years ago the first auction I called (and sold) as Bayleys National Auctioneer was a lovely section in Omaha Beach. Last week it was another Omaha property that became a milestone, tipping my tally to over 1 billion dollars of property SOLD under the hammer for Bayleys. Joneen Smith listed the property and Richard Turner found the winning buyers, fabulous team work from the Bayleys Omaha team. Thank you so much to ALL the superb and wonderful Bayleys salespeople and vendors who week in week out entrust me with their homes and properties. Cheers to the last billion and CHEERS to the next!

Bayleys team - Richard Turner, Sabine Davison and Joneen Smith
Bayleys continues to lead the market with auction sales in Rodney North. Of the 21 properties we’ve auctioned between mid-February and mid-May, 20 of them have sold and the one that hasn’t yet sold has had a number of offers on it. The total sales value is almost $22 million, with an average value of just under $1.1 million per property. Given the average sales price in Rodney North over the Gary Caldwell, Auctioneer last 12 months is $729,000, this shows the strong Bayleys in the North prices Bayleys are getting for our vendors through the auction process. To find out how the Bayleys auction process and our specialists can help you achieve a great result, please contact us today. Not only are we using auctions to drive great results for property sales, we are using them to generate great results for our local community. In the last month we have run a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish in Omaha which raised $14,000. The funds are earmarked to provide wishes for two children in our Bayleys in the North region. We also raised almost $24,000 for the Warkworth A&P Society which are running the 150th annual Warkworth A&P Show in January 2017. A huge thank you to all of the very generous local businesses and community members who have supported these two great causes. Next up is the superb Bayleys Matakana School quiz and auction night on Friday 24th June. For more info ask the Bayleys team. Bayleys are staunch and proud supporters of our local community.
