PACIFIC ENVIRONMENTS WORDS
Warkworth based architect Grant Neill has witnessed some huge changes on the Matakana coast since setting up his business 25 years ago, but he says the biggest shifts in building design have been steps in the right direction. There’s obviously some trepidation around the rapid growth predicted for Warkworth, particularly for Grant, who, as a qualified architect and urban designer, realises the importance of high level planning for the overall impact. When Grant first came to the area Matakana sported a gas station, a sawmill and not much else. Homes for another 20,000 people in

television programme, filmed in Raglan. In fact Mangawhai was just pipped at the post as the preferred location.
“There has been a huge shift towards sustainable design in houses. Clients are thinking about natural light, energy saving technology and solar power is far more mainstream,” Grant says.
“We have such beautiful environments and landscapes across this area that a tiny house is the ideal way of enjoying it without having a large impact. They’re perfect for weekend getaways, and being transportable, they alleviate logistical problems, which opens up more inaccessible locations like Kawau island.”
He joined forces with Auckland based firm Pacific Environments (PE) almost five years ago. Since then he has been involved in some very cool projects. ‘Cool’ is not often a word bandied about in architectural circles, but the company designed the tiny house for the Mitre 10 Tiny House

ladder, tiny houses could be the way of our future. It evokes a lesson from the humble Hermit Crab, take your home with you and expand only when you absolutely need to. Grant says the obvious design challenge is to make use of absolutely every available space; he draws parallels with boat design. He is also quick to add a cautionary note about consents and building regulations for those thinking of embarking on the tiny house journey. After so many years behind the ‘drawing board’ (in reality a 3D digital model on a computer) it’s a wonder that Grant still has so much enthusiasm for the job, but it’s the transient and diverse nature of the role that maintains his passion. He has designed everything from elite beachfront pads at Omaha, to care facilities for seniors. The company was also involved in an international competition to design a living environment for a person with autism. They came up with a clever design based on sustainable modules that are attached to the main family house and then move with the child as they get older, allowing them to move on in life but still be connected to the personal space they grew up with. Grant realises the power that a well-designed and built environment has to enhance a person’s emotional wellbeing. “Delivering a building that satisfies a person's needs, delights and often surprises them is what it’s all about. On-going feedback over the years has enabled me to tweak and improve designs.” He is also justifiably proud of the group’s design for the Housing New Zealand Luke Street emergency housing village. Over 40 ‘pop-up’ homes were designed and built to house homeless families in South Auckland. “The social agencies took families off the streets, out of cars and away from damp and unhealthy homes. We were told children with a history of hospitalisation because of breathing difficulties were fit and healthy within three weeks of moving into one of the new warm and dry homes. That gives me a real sense of achievement and it’s hugely rewarding.” www.pacificenvironments.co.nz

MARK PERRY WORDS
KIRSTY
MILLAR
Board meetings are not a priority for Mark Perry. Nothing stands in the way of good surf, not even ownership of a thriving radio station. Radio Hauraki’s original Morning Pirate, Mark is one of the country’s top broadcasters with a string of radio awards to his name. Remember his Family Health Diary segments on TV One? Or his Briscoes voice-over ads, brand voice for the Living Channel, or… and… plus… The list is endless. But when it comes to an all-round good guy title, that’s been awarded by the Mangawhai community. Locals have applauded him for his philanthropic contributions and for keeping the area rocking to an eclectic mix of music via Heads FM and The Wireless. What’s surprising is the structure of Mark’s privately owned and operated station. A few DJs glued to a studio? Spoiler alert - everything is automated, freeing Mark up to chase the best surf breaks or travel around the globe. “Technology has given me freedom to run a radio station from the bush in Te Arai. The arrival of broadband around 2007 meant my wife and I could escape Auckland and move permanently to Mangawhai. I’ve always been a techie, balanced out with surfing. Living the dream? yes!” Mark says. Humble beginnings are the best way to describe the launch of Heads FM. Throwback to Y2K and the station beamed out of an old iMac. Running from the rooftop of Mangawhai Lodge at a ½ watt on 88.1FM and just covering a 4km radius, belting out tracks from Mark’s favourite iTunes library. It was a weekend hobby, an escape from the day job at Radio Hauraki. Back then it would hiccup regularly and he’d race down from his Te Arai bach to fix things. In 2008, buoyed on by positive feedback, Mark purchased a “Small Community” FM licence on 106.4FM and continued to provide a local voice for the community with greater coverage. “This gave me 20 watts and opened up a viable business. Broadband meant I could work from home, or away. I could say goodbye to the rat race and its McRadio cheesy formats. People ask why I haven’t picked a genre, but I’ve purposely kept the music varied to suit a wide audience and to expose people to different artists. Maximum

music time has been important, I roll out less than four minutes of ads per hour.” Hiring DJ’s has never been tempting Mark’s here for the lifestyle not to be a manager. While time checks, surf reports, and weather updates could be handy, he believes people access that info from mobiles anyway. He’s unapologetically and unashamedly keeping it simple. “Yes, that makes it a little rough around the edges sometimes, but it also means I can support non-profit groups in the area. Hey, it’ll never be a Rupert Murdoch success, but I’m happy.” Many won’t realise it, but Mark recently funded a solar power backup system as part of the Emergency Response Plan for the region. He can now share live updates 24/7 for three days should power cut out in an emergency. He also competed with the big radio guys at auction in 2014, purchasing the licence for 90.4FM, safeguarding his patch with The Wireless format and getting greater coverage with a transmitter site high on Bream Tail, giving coverage to Marsden Cove, Ruakaka, Waipu, Langs Beach, Te Arai, Pakiri and of course, Mangawhai. From day one, Mark has been grateful for the support of his original listeners and advertisers. Does Spotify worry him? “Nah, radio will always have its naysayers, but listenership just keeps increasing as we’re streaming online as well. Local radio connects a community.” www.headsfm.co.nz

Very pleased, but not necessarily surprised. We believe success is about a number of things, not just in the brands we stock, or the price point. We put our heart and soul into what we do and many of our customers have become great friends over the years. Who are your customers?

Our new customers from different backgrounds definitely add to the melting pot of ideas that is Katya Maker. What changes have you noticed since starting out or moving to the area? What’s the best thing about being a local business? The genuine, down to earth, friendly and real people we meet every day is very inspiring. Recently I had a customer ask me, “Why are you based in Warkworth? You should consider moving into Auckland.” But we have a great local following, we employ local people and we are not just an address, or a place. We are a destination. What are your plans for the future? To continue to provide the excellent service we are renown for, keep growing our customer base, locals and beyond. There are people that have been living in the area for 40 years that still don't know we exist. Do you have any special message for those who voted for you or regular customers? Thank you to our customers. We are grateful for the community support and we will keep providing hard to find, one of a kind garments and accessories from around the world. “Cutting edge cool,” as our fabulous Gabrielle Colley describes Katya Maker Store. Do you have a special message for your staff? I would like to thank, Maree Owston-Doyle for being my right hand since the very beginning. Ruby-Rose Witcher, Morgan Kay, Paula Hammond and my husband, Brad. The front and behind curtains staff, for all their hard work, skills, commitment and knowledge during the years. They all helped make Katya Maker the brand it now is. www.katyamaker.com 09 422 3359 FROM THE JUNCTION TEAM

Meat and condiments are supplied locally and they aren’t scared to try out new things. As far as customer satisfaction goes, Rob Lees says it’s pretty straightforward. “If we wouldn’t buy it, then we don’t sell it! We take time to get to know our customers and appreciate the effort they have made to shop with us.” Buying local from Warkworth Butchery also helps support local community and sports groups with much needed fundraisers. www.warkworthbutchery.co.nz | 09 425 9947

WINE
THE REGION AND THE WINES
Winter is a time for work and reflection on the vineyard. The leaves are long gone, and the low winter sun reflects little warmth on the faces of those who steadily prune the vines ahead of the spring growth. Each cut is a careful contemplation of how best to shape the coming season. Last season’s canopy is trimmed away to strike a careful balance between potential for growth, and restraint against excess production, which produces lower quality fruit. The members of the Matakana Winegrowers Association are a varied group, with a diverse collection of wines, but all have the same challenges that winegrowers have faced for thousands of years. Place, geography and climate, are the key elements in defining any viticulture region. Elements that are adapted to, but ultimately remain out of human control. Matakana vineyards have old, clay rich, well-structured soils on volcanic sand and silt sediments. They are dry farmed without the use of irrigation and the soils soak up rain during the wet months. They relinquish this precious moisture throughout the dry, sometimes drought prone summer. Local vineyards are predominantly on hillside sites that have low vigour. That
means just enough to sustain a moderate crop and ensure the focus is always on quality. While grapes were grown at the Seaview vineyard in Snells Beach from the 1950’s, the beginnings of the Matakana wine region as we know it began in the late 1970’s with the Vuletic brothers, Petar and Jim, and their Antipodean (and later Providence) Vineyards. Growing grapes and making wines in a style that aimed to emulate the great wines of Bordeaux. Their meticulous attention to detail and bold aspirations thrust Matakana into the consciousness of an emerging New Zealand wine market, along with other wine visionaries in Martinborough, Marlborough, and Central Otago. The early success and recognition of those Cabernet/Merlot/Malbec based (Bordeaux styled) wines inspired a wave of vineyard expansion into Matakana. Heron’s Flight, Ransom, Brick Bay, Hyperion, Ascension and Matakana Estate. A new world of different personalities, grape growing and winemaking styles. It was the beginning of a broader sense of Matakana wine becoming something distinct and unique. Emboldened by experience, and in a shifting wine world that encouraged diversity, the early Matakana vineyards have been joined by many more.

They have all embraced the freedom to create Matakana wines as they see fit. Takatu, Coxhead Creek, Ti Point, Greve, Mahurangi River, Omaha Bay Vineyard, Gillman, Saltings, Matavino, Runner Duck, Hawk’s Nest, The Gabion, Merry Fields, Sculptureum, Contour Estate and Nola, have all have brought unique interpretations to the definition of Matakana wine. Matakana now has one of the most diverse mixes of grape varieties in the country. There are now 28 different French, Italian, Spanish, even Austrian varieties, comprising of 11 whites and 17 reds. The regional growth of tourism has allowed many vineyards to build wine as an integral part of the local tourist experience. Winery cellar doors and restaurants highlight their vineyards wines and provide stunning venues for weddings, conferences, and concerts. In a modern Matakana take on wine, location, art and culture has intertwined. The region has vineyards as the integral component for world class sculpture installations. As the wines of Matakana are constantly evolving and better reflecting their sense of place, climate and community, there may be time for reflection on the vineyard in winter, hope for the season ahead even, but no escaping the next cane that needs to be cut. www.matakanawine.co.nz

WINE
MORRIS & JAMES AMPHORAS
For the last two years the team at Morris & James have been working, with a little help from the good people at Heron’s Flight Winery, to develop the regions first locally produced wine ‘amphora.’ Amphoras were a type of container of a very distinct shape and size that descend from at least as early as the Neolithic period. They were used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products, both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine. They were also used as a winefermenting vessel. Stefano Guidi from Heron’s Flight Winery is a specialist in invigorating this ancient wine making method. He created Heron’s Flight flagship premium 2015 Amphora Sangiovese, using an impressive 500-litre amphora, imported from Impruneta in Tuscany.
Working with advice from Stefano, the craftsmen at the pottery have developed a smaller 110-litre vessel. It’s the perfect size for wine makers wanting to experiment with amphora fermentation techniques, or for making boutique batches. The terracotta clay is what gives the amphora special properties, which interest winemakers. The clay is porous, thereby allowing oxygen to permeate the inside favourably. This influences the chemistry of the fermenting grapes. The winemaker can adjust the oxygen levels with a thin layer of natural beeswax, applied to the interior wall. Morris and James amphora are hand thrown using ‘Matakana’ clay, which is harvested every summer from the clay pit adjacent to the pottery. The clay
is rustic and robust, which has proven to be the perfect medium for the new amphora range. The finished product also includes a bespoke stainless steel lid designed by Nick Charlton at the pottery. Amphora wine is low in sulphites, as this method of fermentation reduces the need for added sulphites or preservatives. The flavour is delicious. All wine connoisseurs should experience the distinctive taste of an amphora wine, exhibiting soft tannins and beautiful floral aromas. Curious? Then try a local drop of Heron’s Flight Amphora Sangiovese 2015 and give it a swirl. www.morrisandjames.co.nz sales@morrisandjames.co.nz
67A Matakana Valley Rd; Selling Through Angela Wain vs Selling Privately? A classic example of how selling through an experienced, trustworthy agent can achieve a much better result for the property owner. After receiving what appeared to be a low offer from an interested buyer, the owner contacted Angela, who appraised the property at considerably more than the private offer, listed it & put together a professional marketing campaign. The result? An agreement signed after the first Open Home for nearly $200,000 more than the private offer & with more buyers backed up if that offer fell over!!

MANGAWHAI VINTNERS WORDS
KIRSTY
For Ross Millar, good memories consist of a stint working in a vineyard as a teenager and later in life seeking out travel that entailed wine – buying it, imbibing it, or appreciating the land it came from. The Viognier may be in the blood, it sure felt that way when an opportunity to purchase two hectares in Mangawhai came calling. Nestled in the coastal foothills of the Brynderwyn Ranges and surrounded by beautiful countryside, the Millar family have established a thriving boutique vineyard. Vines comprise Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Viognier and Syrah. The first vintage was celebrated in 2007. Now embarking on their 11th vintage, there have been plenty of highs and a few lows. “The weather plays a big part in how our season stacks up. 2010 was a long Indian summer and our Syrah reaped the benefits, picking up a gold medal at the NZ International Wine Show. 2017 will prove trickier, no one in our industry will forget the 200mm of rain at the end of summer, slowing ripening and dashing our hopes of good volume.
MILLAR
Weather events can be devastating. At some point we have to make a call, if we can’t guarantee our product to be of premium flavour, we have to walk away. That’s what we did in 2016. The end of summer can be a stressful period in our lives!” Ross says. Is there a work, life, balance to the Millar’s formula? Yes. Travel in the offseason is a passion and some of the best days are at the cellar door. “Banter over wine tasting with all walks of life who share an interest in wine, keeps our job interesting. As does the annual Mangawhai Food and Wine Festival. We love showcasing our products and witnessing people enjoying our drop. That’s always a fun time of the year.” Broadening their repertoire with onsite events, fundraisers and weddings, the Millar’s have created something special. This beautiful venue is a true reflection of the love and attention poured into it. www.millarswines.co.nz

RUNNER DUCK Nothing signifies the joy of celebration better, than the cheerful pop of a cork from a bottle of sparkling wine. And for a vineyard restaurant there is nothing more satisfying then serving a sparkling wine from your own vineyard to your guests. With an increasing number of weddings, birthdays, and other joyful occasions being celebrated at Plume Restaurant, creating their own signature sparkling wine quickly became a focus for owners, Clyde and Farida Cooper. They made the decision to make a fully methode traditional, bottle fermented and lees aged wine. Using Cabernet Franc grapes handpicked and whole bunched pressed to retain the prettiest of pink hues, from their Duck Creek Road vineyard, Good things take time, and so it is with Methode Traditional wines. From harvest in March 2014 the wine was initially fermented in a mixture of stainless tanks and conditioned French Barrels. December 2014 saw the bottling and second, in bottle fermentation to naturally create the exuberant fizz and burst of excitement. For another two years Joy has quietly been sitting in the bottle. The slow, rewarding, release of flavour and creamy texture from the yeast lees in the bottle, transform a simple sparkling wine into something special. The final stage is the disgorging of the yeast from the bottle, and sealing with a traditional cork. After three long years, Runner Duck wines and Plume Restaurant, are happy to share their Joy with friends and customers alike. www.plumerestaurant.co.nz www.runnerduck.co.nz

MATAVINO WINES Matavino is a small vineyard, nestled on gentle north-facing slopes in the Matakana wine region. Owned and initially planted in September 2006 by Jim Hight, the first wines went on sale in October 2010. Jim’s vision is to grow a variety of wines that match the local food and produce. This includes some red Italian grape varieties such as the acclaimed Barbera and Dolcetto, as well as white wine grape varieties Viognier and Chardonnay. The vines are hand nurtured by family and friends using sustainable practices. The Chardonnay and Viognier go extremely well with Mahurangi Oysters and sell out fast.

WINE
WINE GURUS As the old saying goes ‘if you want to make a small fortune from wine then start with a very large fortune’. There’s always some truth in cynicism and winemaking is definitely not for the faint of heart. But fear not because help is at hand for the vast array of winemakers, large and small, across the region. It comes in the form of very experienced winemakers that help out other vineyards and can even produce their wines for them. They don’t wear super hero grape capes, but following their wealth of advice can be the difference between a dire season and a damn fine drop. Matakana based, James Graham is well known to locals for his wines from Takatu and Runner Duck, but he’s also helping to build a collective spirit amongst local winemakers. “There are many challenges that face the smaller producers, but by helping everyone, we build a strong wine growing community,” James says. Wine community is a good way of putting it, where else can you visit the local shop, bar, restaurant or liquor store and find an array of locally made wines from a region that’s not noted for any particular variety? As a wine consultant James has the bona fides. After attaining a Post Graduate Diploma in viticulture and oenology, (wine, grapes and vine cultivation) he spent years honing his skills around the world. James followed the growing season from France to Oregon, British Columbia to Tuscany, South Africa to Marlborough. So what is the most important thing about producing good wine? “Grapes. You can’t make great wine from terrible grapes.” That means a large part of James’ job is sampling the fruit. He masters perfect vine pruning to ensure the correct crop yield, and most importantly quality. He also makes the call on when to harvest. It’s a huge responsibility with livelihoods on the line, and the next crop damaging tropical storm is just around the corner. “There is not much room for error and no two years are ever the same. You can spend a lifetime exploring wine and not even come close to understanding everything. That’s what makes it so appealing.” james@takatuwine.co.nz

For Real, now here’s a book that should be pinging its way into your inbox, especially if you seek easy and delicious real food. Sitting behind this exquisite recipe eBook is successful online blogger, holistic health coach, and mum, Maryana Lishman. Maryana has carved out an impressive online business with over 27,000 followers, where sharing and caring is the key across two Facebook communities; The Healing Tribe and Raised on Real Food. Fuelled by a passion for helping families, Maryana focuses on holistic health strategies for resolving eczema and allergies, along with supporting families to eat more wholefoods. Her online forums are based on a no bull policy, being kind is king. She also runs an online Eczema and Allergy Wellness clinic around gut health, family wellness, low toxin living and real food nutrition. Recipe eBook, For Real, adds to her healthy armoury too, pulled together using an old Mac and a talent for writing. Maryana is proud of the results, “From a passion led project to begin with, my work has grown organically. My blogging has always been done with integrity. Social media can be an ego game, I’d rather show a photo of my duck salad over my duck face!” Maryana says. Flashback to 2011 and it wasn’t so healthy. The Lishman’s embarked on a nutrient seeking journey when their daughter was diagnosed with ‘Failure

to Thrive’. Seeing her deal with eczema and multiple food allergies, Maryana called time on the steroid creams, trusting her instincts around healing from the inside out. Frustrated at unsupportive health professionals and conflicting information, she spent two years changing her family’s lifestyle. Nutrition was the key. “It can be a struggle, but our kids are the next generation, to nourish them we need to do it through food and discussion. It’s not about perfect eating always, but it is around support and knowledge to make positive health choices. Empowering people to make healthy changes because they want to, not through fear or uncertainty – that’s what drives me.” As the ink dries, Maryana and her family will have moved to Mangawhai. Understandably, life is a rollercoaster of emotions right now; tiredness, excitement, nerves and hope. But this beautiful coastal town has lured them. Chosen for its stream of healthy types, farmers markets, glorious beach and green spaces. A desire to get out of the city and live at a slower pace was also on the wish list. Yet Maryana’s entrepreneurial spirit never rests. Ideas are simmering, including prospective workshops with the Dirty Hippie in Waipu. www.empoweredkitchen.co.nz www.facebook.com/raisedonrealfood

It’s Friday lunchtime and the row of muddy boots outside Jin Jin indicates the popularity of the daily lunch box special. The row of luxury European cars on the street also demonstrates just how diverse the clientele is. That’s because maestro Chef Dan O’Donnell has hit the right chords with his menu. It plays to the strengths of the multitude of Asian countries that have inspired him, maintains a broad appeal, and hits the right price point. Fusion is not the right word; Dan likes to stay as culturally honest as possible. That’s because of the painstaking research that went into the menu. In 2015 he embarked on a tour of Asia. “In Bangkok I spent hours everyday

just watching how they put the dishes together,” Dan says during a break from flipping the wok. In Hanoi he brokered a deal with a restaurant owner wanting to serve food to the less adventurous tourists. Dan taught several chefs how to cook Western style with only a Wok at hand. In exchange they took him home to sample some of their family favourites. Since April 2016 Jin Jin has been delighting the taste buds of Matakana visitors and locals. Takeaways have been going gangbusters and what was originally a sideline has now become a core part of the business. Dan says it’s now time to change things up a little. “Don’t panic, the menu is being expanded not restricted. We would like to cater more for
children and give people that aren’t fond of spice an option to dine out with their friends.” That means steak, duck burgers, fish and chips and butter chicken. For the spice lovers, Wednesday will be $15 curry night. Dan has recently taken on Cha, a chef from northern Thailand. Cha has helped create the curry night menu and added some Zen to the open plan kitchen. “Cha has been cooking Thai food for almost as long as I have been cooking Western food, and that’s 26 years. Our curries are predominantly Southeast Asian, but we will hopefully have something for everyone". 44 Matakana Valley Rd, Matakana www.facebook.com/jinjinmatakana

According to Annie Oxborough; “The greatest sin in life is to be boring,” and after twenty minutes in her effervescent company, I’m inclined to agree. Annie and her husband Mark, who is a builder, own a kauri villa on Leigh Road that was built in 1911. It was the original farmstead, but Annie is not your typical farm girl, and typical is not a word you would use to describe her home. The interior décor is a sight to behold. You may not fall in love with the overwhelmingly eclectic mix of modern and vintage, but you will find something that you absolutely adore. Call me macabre, but I would happily have taken the bison horns, deer antlers and 19th Century operating theatre lamp. Every piece has a story, and reproduction, or ‘knock off’ as Annie says, is positively a dirty word. Annie doesn’t shy away from the odd dirty word, but knock offs are a no-no. Just like her décor she is absolutely authentic. “I don’t do bland, matching or ordered. My home is individual and reflects my personality. When it comes to style, you can’t pigeon hole me. I’m unbox-able!” It’s actually a breath of fresh air to meet someone that doesn’t care about what other people think. Annie is a trendsetter and it’s largely due to her work as a stylist for the past 28 years. Annie’s creations have graced the front covers of numerous magazines. A trained florist, she is a one-stop-shop for setting up a ‘look’. From weddings and corporate events to homes and offices. If you want Hawaii, she’ll bring it to your front room. If you have a penchant for the roaring 1920’s, I’m sure she’ll have Gatsby, The Charleston Band and the Bureau of Prohibition ready and waiting. Annie has taken all her favourite bits of cultural style and period living and decorated her house with them. It’s a cross between an Aladdin’s cave full of props, and a boudoir that doubles as a time machine. She says it started out as a necessity. “I didn’t have much money so in-organic rubbish was up-cycled and repurposed. In fact I don’t think I have ever brought a new piece of furniture in my life.” Timeless mid-century style is definitely Annie’s favourite. A JD Morgan sofa takes pride of place in the lounge, perfectly positioned to soak up the rural views. We sit down and admire the sheep grazing peacefully, apparently the mysteries of caring for sheep are gradually being revealed to Annie. After half a lifetime on the North Shore, she is relishing country living on ten acres. “I didn’t know what true happiness was until we moved here a couple of years ago. The irony is you are more isolated in the city. I felt everyone knew me here within the first ten minutes and the community spirit is fantastic.” The pièce de résistance of Annie’s place is the barn. On one side it’s a modern white space that is available for almost any type of function or gathering. On the other is ‘The Speakeasy’. As a professional pub-goer with many years of research, both here and overseas, I can tell you The Speakeasy is an absolutely top shelf drinking den. It’s like stepping back in time and finding the perfect place for a party. Annie is happy to provide the barn, The Speakeasy and the band rotunda on the lawn for any type of gathering. I wouldn’t be surprised if it became one of the top places to get married. In fact with Annie as the driving force it’s pretty much guaranteed. www.annieoxborough.co.nz www.facebook.com/matakanavenuehire

ART
A BOLD FOLD
Tracey Davies’ entry for this year’s Art ‘n’ Tartan Wearable Art Awards was made entirely from past issues of Junction Magazine. Tracey is quick to reassure us that she does enjoy the mag before turning it into something even more artistic and useful. “It’s a great community magazine and I really look forward to the next edition,” Tracey says. Tracey had two entries in the Waipu Art 'n' Tartan awards; ‘Fold and Be Bold’ in the Business House section. And in the Open Go Mad in Plaid section, ‘Floral Tart.’ The Junction inspired ship was in the Business House category. The quality of the paper used for the magazine enabled Tracey to create something that represented her heritage. Inspired by 3D origami, she meticulously folded ten thousand individual pieces of Junction Mag into triangles. The triangles are stacked on top of each other to recreate the Gazelle. The great ship brought new migrants to New Zealand’s shores in 1853. The youngest in her family, Tracey has four older brothers and was raised on a farm in Wellsford. From a young age Tracey was interested in crafts, but her outdoor lifestyle left no time to indulge her passion. It wasn't until later in high school that Tracey and a few friends entered the Warkworth wearable arts show and won the student category. The win really sparked Tracey's interest in wearable arts. She loves using varied mediums to create something unique. After high school Tracey went on to study Fashion Design and then Business Training. She currently works as a bank teller for ASB, but in her spare time enjoys creating bold and fresh art manipulations. She is a meticulous researcher and says that, along with her creative ambition, helps her re-create something new and modern.

CHERISH
A HONEY TRAP “It’s a drug on a par with my chocolate addiction,” Grass Esposti says, lifting the lid on one of her beautifully painted beehives. She’s talking about the art of keeping bees, a hobby she took up accidentally four years ago. “I was looking for a way to pollinate the old orchard and bring it back to life, but I’m totally hooked now.” The bees are swarming on the honeycomb, still working hard despite the winter chill, but they pay Grass little attention. It’s because the bees recognise her, just as they recognise their individual hives, all painted and named by Grass. Her own name has been shortened from Graziella, chosen by her Italian father, after years of mispronunciation and misspelling. This particular hive is queen Frida’s domain, named after the artist, Frida Kahlo. Queen Frida is apparently with her harem in the brew chamber, which is on the first floor. During the summer months when production goes into overdrive, Grass will add more levels and gradually reap the sweet golden rewards. The wax will be transformed into candles, furniture polish and a waterproofing agent. There’s a lot to be gained from becoming a beekeeper and Grass is actively recruiting more budding apiarists. She was one of the founders of the Warkworth Beekeepers Society and is celebrating the societies first anniversary this month. They already have 120 members and are geared up to helping newbees (sorry I couldn’t resist it). Bees are the world’s most important pollinator of food crops. They’ve had a tough time with disease, mites, poor summers and German paper wasps. August is the perfect month to get an introduction to beekeeping and the society will provide all the help and advice you need, in order to get a good buzz on. www.facebook.com/wwbeekeepers

MASTER CRAFTSMEN
CRAFTING A CUP WIN WORDS
ROD
CHEESEMAN
Just out from the Omaha boat ramp sits Alia, a 32-foot teak cutter built from a traditional 1930’s design. Alia is the longest love of Jacques De Kervor’s life. He designed and built her in Hong Kong, when he was just 25-years-old. These days he works at the cutting edge of sailing innovation at Core Composites in Warkworth. The Core team has built all of Oracle’s Americas Cup boats beginning in 2001 when they first established in Ventura California. Since moving to Warkworth in 2009 they have supplied many parts and tools for other teams, and components for all of the pre-race AC 45 boats. For Jacques, Oracle’s loss and Team New Zealand’s win is bitter sweet. “I was in the parade dressed as a pirate celebrating New Zealand’s win in ’95, I still have the sword from that costume,” Jacques says, with a laugh. “We have a great team here at Core that create fantastic things. Sure we are a little disappointed, but I think the one design elements we see in the AC 50 has created a much more even playing field with more participants. I hope the AC 50 is retained and that that we continue to build parts for other teams, here in Warkworth.” Jacques is a self-taught designer and boat builder. He was almost 50 before finally working with local master craftsman and boat builder, John Rae. He attributes some of his success to forensic observations of what works and what doesn’t. Jacques grew up in America; his dad was a clay modeller, bringing to life the iconic Ford Thunderbird and innovative designs for the pioneer of underwater exploration, Jacques Cousteau. “Any skills I got from my father must’ve come from blood rather than instruction because I hardly ever saw him.” At 18 Jacques landed a job at aircraft engineers Pratt and Whitney, working on the Supersonic Transport programme. But his real passion was sailing and he studied carpentry and boat building. Over the years he has repaired numerous boats, built spars, staircases, wharves, picture frames and even his own house in Matakana. “Traditional boat builders are spatial thinkers. They have an intimate knowledge of how everything will come together before they even start construction. Most boat builders today are a small part of a big process. I lament the demise of being hands on, from go to whoa.” www.corebuilderscomposites.com

MAKE A WISH Bayleys in the North recently held their annual charity lunch at The Stables, Matakana. Raising $18,000 for Make A Wish, of which 100 per cent of the proceeds goes to Make A Wish children in our region. This year’s theme was a mid-winter Christmas lunch and guests were greeted with a glass of cold bubbles and warm fires. Annie O created the marvellous Christmas table and room design. Marnie Perkinson was the MC and Sarah Laurie Lifestyles shared some very wise words regarding stress in the modern world. Make A Wish recipient Corban Devey and his mum Chantelle also made a very moving speech. A special surprise performance from Stephen Diaz accompanied by Josh Clark from The Auckland Opera Studio provided a moving rendition of Somewhere over the Rainbow. Tremendous local support ensured some amazing items were generously donated for the silent and live auctions. Bayleys' auctioneer Sabine Davison made the calls and the willing crowd hotly contested them in a bidding frenzy. The Bayleys team are very grateful to live in an area that supports such a good cause and would like to thank everyone involved. Join them next year on 1 June. www.bayleys.co.nz | www.makeawish.co.nz
