MATAKANA BOTANICALS Matakana Botanicals has received national attention this month after starting a campaign of support for Emirates Team New Zealand. Already suppliers of Great Barrier Island Bee Co SPF30 Sunscreen and Lip Balms to the team, Owner Danvers Devereux wanted to do more to show his support – and so the mowing movement was born. He started by mowing GO ETNZ in the front lawn of his Leigh Road property and after Grant Dalton himself shared the video on social media, Bayswater Marina and Viaduct Harbour jumped onboard. He then challenged his Matakana neighbours to do the same and quickly gained support from The Sawmill Brewery, Matakana Country Park, Annie O Botanical Stylist, to name a few. Danvers also took his mow message to Omaha Beach and over Great Barrier. www.matakanabotanicals.co.nz

Surf shop owner, Dave Glover, isn’t in it just for the love of clothes. Retail sales keep the bottom line in check, but community spirit is equally as important. Located in Mangawhai Village, Bammas Surf, Sport and Leisure has been outfitting locals for over 25 years, yet this is not your standard retailer. Ask around and locals might mention a great new hoodie picked up in store, but they’re just as likely to report about the support Bammas have provided for their local club, school, charity and so on. The help comes in all guises, prizes for events, uniforms, sponsorship even admin and ticketing support. Yet it all sits very much under the radar. No fanfare, hoopla or profile, Dave doesn’t do it for that. He’s simply one of Mangawhai’s good sorts and it was a struggle grabbing a story out of him. Self-promotion or praise does not sit well with this bloke, instead we agreed to thank his awesome team and share a bit of history. Before purchasing the business in 2010, Bammas was a mixed bag, a true village haberdashery. The name reflects its previous owners, a mishmash of first and last names, and goodwill ran too deep to change it. From the late 1980’s a loyal following was established; it was a treasure trove in store, something for all. Baby-boomers grabbed wool for knitting, DVDs were hired, and youngsters picked up a surf label. Most local clubs, sports groups and schools used this central hub as a ticketing booth for events or fundraisers. Service to this sleepy coastal village was strong and despite rapid growth in the area, that legacy lives on under Dave’s ownership.

“That level of support will always be a top priority,” Dave says. “I’ve simply shaken things up in a changing market to meet demands for affordable, streetsavvy threads. It’s been an exciting time working out what our customers want, and encouraging a ‘shop local’ ethos. Special mention goes to the team, particularly Olivia Lay who walked into the shop with me seven years ago and plays an integral role in our business. We also employ lots of students, and even two generations within some families. That’s special and keeping staff happy is vital.” But it hasn’t always been rosy. In the early years, a couple of burglaries were excruciating. Bammas was completely done-over twice in a short timeframe. “It was an emotional roller coaster, for a few days I wasn’t sure we could even open the doors, stock was low and debt high. But security has tightened and we’ve moved on.” On a lighter note, the shop mascot is something of a legend around town. Mr Tiki, is just that, large and local. Guarding the shop front, Mr T provides light-hearted antidotes on his puku, amusing a town and reminding us all that this shop has a big heart. 43 Moir Street, Mangawhai 09 431 4660

Most eight-year-old boys would run a mile from a cow’s prolapsed uterus, but Roger Dunn grabbed a bucket and ran to help the local vet Dick Carter. It was the beginning of his lifelong dedication to help animals and the defining moment when he knew what he wanted to do. Since that first cow on the family farm some fifty years ago, Roger has helped all creatures great and small. He says his path in life was easier than most because he chose his vocation at such an early age. But there’s nothing easy about being a rural vet. Vets are everything from general practitioners to surgeons and they do all this for patients that give them no verbal indications of their symptoms. We tend not to underestimate the bond between animals and people. But as I sit in Roger’s office inhaling that strange smell that is ubiquitous in veterinary clinics, I think perhaps we undervalue
the professionals that take such good care of our best friends. “I just couldn’t imagine doing anything else,” Roger says. “As I watched Dick Carter drive off the farm I just knew I was going to be a vet.” It’s hard to believe now, but when Roger first started practicing in 1981, he discovered his knowledge of animals far outweighed his experience with people. “I quickly learned that before you get near the patient you have to deal with the person and that’s tough for an introvert like me.” The people are now the most enjoyable part of the job for Roger. The Warkworth and Wellsford practices he shares with partners John Makin and Danny Cash have an eclectic mix of clients. The team are responsible for the zoological menagerie at Gibbs farm, which includes zebras and giraffes.

They also care for the cold-blooded inhabitants at Ti Point Reptile Park and have many rural farms to attend to. “When you’re on-call after hours, you never know what you’re going to be dealing with. What I love about being a vet is that getting a veterinary science degree is just the start of the quest for knowledge.” The entertaining semi-autobiographical accounts of rural vet, James Herriot was mandatory reading when Roger was studying. Roger has the same way of garnering some humour and some satisfaction, even in disaster. “I got my head stuck in the mouth of a Great Dane once,” he says laughing. “Of course it was my fault, he was protecting his turf, but I had puncture marks under my chin and on the top of my head.” Another anecdote of Roger’s was a call-out to treat a bull in difficulty. It turned out the bull had decided to go for a swim in the neighbour's pool. After much head scratching Roger decided to drain the pool and make a ramp from hay bales. “I also went to attend a sick foal once. I was led into the house, which I thought was a bit strange. In the lounge there was a makeshift corral made with the sofas, and in the middle, on the carpet was the foal. Now that’s commitment to your animals.” Roger and wife Robyn have nurtured their lifestyle block on Kaipara Flats Road for almost 23 years; sadly it looks like they will be forced out to make way for the new motorway. It’s another indication of how rapidly the area is changing. There are less farms and more domestic pets than when Roger first started. The couple are empty-nesters, with daughter Sarah working as a journalist and son Mike working in construction. There was a time when Roger thought they might follow in his footsteps. Over the years the family helped care for more animals than he can remember. “It’s just impossible to say no and almost every vet does this. You have the ability, you love animals and if my wife and children are smitten it’s another pet coming home to live.” 18 Neville Street, Warkworth 09 425 8244

ART
A FRENCH CONNECTION Merthyr Ruxton began painting after the arrival of her first child, Elliott in 1986. As a graphic designer she had left corporate life behind in Wellington and moved with her husband to Auckland where her family originally came from. Starting out into the Auckland art market in the 80’s was great fun. It was boom time and corporates as well as individuals were buying art for their collections. Merthyr was able to establish a name for herself with her figurative and abstract works. She painted gouache on paper and exhibited at various galleries around the city – Studio of Contemporary Art, Flagstaff Gallery, The Adele Dallimore Gallery and others. She also had exhibitions at the New Zealand Embassy in Hong Kong and Santiago. Australia also became interested in her particular style and she worked with a number of Sydney dealers, designing images for limited edition prints often flying to Melbourne or Sydney to sign them. It was a very nice antidote to washing nappies! In the 90’s she worked as a designer for Morris and James designing platters, tiles and artwork for press ads. Her tile and platter designs are featured in the book Mud and Colour Man about the founder of the tileworks, Anthony Morris who has a 40 year retrospective coming up soon. Merthyr fell in love with Matakana with its bright green bumpy little hills. She and her husband bought a piece of land on the Tawharanui Peninsular and built a small house.

In the last four years Merthyr has been living full time there while her husband tries to make up his mind to retire. She now has a lovely studio which looks out over Omaha to the North and Kawau to the East across acres of native bush where the Tui, Bellbirds and Shining Cuckoo have returned. The Bellbirds come to the zinnia and swan plant garden she has planted for the butterflies and this garden features in some of the work. Merthyr curates a regular newsletter called Matakana Artists, which highlights work destined for exhibitions at both local and Auckland galleries. The newsletter is designed to shine a light on the local artists ‘within their own landscape’ so visitors to the area will be able to locate them having seen their work in the city. A chance to exhibit in Giverny, France was recently presented, and it is these works that Merthyr is currently working on "Giverny is a magical place, I was there four years ago and found it totally charming – even down to the haystacks that Monet painted (17 times) which are still there, exactly as they were in the 1880’s". She missed out on the chance to exhibit with the same people at the Place des Vosges two years ago and so has leapt at the chance to be part of this year’s show. www.intstagram.com/merthyrruxton penny@pennykemberdesign.co.nz

CLARE
MORA
Piece Gallery owner, Angus Wilderspin, has found his artistic niche in life, and it’s taken all the many skills he has worked hard to acquire over the last 48 years. You see Angus, like many of us, was a frustrated artist. When he left the rigid authoritarian confines of grammar school, he got sucked straight back into the vortex of conformity, and obtained an accounting degree from the university of Otago. It might be handy for the end of year accounts, but didn’t really float Angus’ boat. Sailing on the other-hand did, and Angus went off in search of adventure. He found it in the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, working on luxury yachts, but all great adventures have to end. Angus returned to New Zealand in his late twenties with an artistic itch that needed to be scratched. He signed up for a course in massage therapy and learned an inordinate amount about physical and spiritual wellbeing. Next followed a postgraduate diploma in teaching and six winters spent in a raft of primary schools across Auckland. Summers were spent running sailing charters in the Hauraki Gulf. “I’m really all about sharing experiences and that’s why I enjoyed taking people sailing and being a teacher,” Angus says.

During this time Angus signed up for a course with Auckland artist Matthew Browne and started to fulfill his artistic ambitions. His drawings were a great way to connect and engage with his pupils. “I was interested in drawing, but I went in at the deep-end on a painting course. I was very lucky; Matthew is a great teacher and painter. I think of learning like a staircase, sometimes you plateau on a step, but I kept going. I have tried pottery and ceramics at night classes and I’ve learned about glass and jewellery making.” Then one fateful day almost two years ago, Angus drove from West Auckland to visit Matakana and the final piece of the puzzle fell into place. “My partner Clare knew the gallery owner and popped in. Twenty minutes later I was seriously considering buying the gallery. Three months after that I took over. Not in my wildest dreams did I think I would be a gallery owner, but I love it. I work closely with the artists, share the art gallery experience with visitors and I can teach customers about the creative process that goes into the piece they like.” www.piecegallery.co.nz

EIJKELON AT BRICK BAY From a crumpled piece of paper, artist Leon Van Den Eijkelon collaborated with engineers to transform his simple idea into five elegant steel sculptures that levitate above the ground. And the gravity defying Baubles literally went from on-paper to mid-air. Over the last decade the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail team has worked alongside Leon Van den Eijkelon on a number of highly successful bodies of work. Three large scale kinetic Windmills now sited at Hobsonville Point, several Kynic Trees in private collections and most recently placing five ‘Baubles’ into a private collection located at Ti Point. Here they will rest on a beautiful slope overlooking Omaha and out towards Little Barrier Island. “The baubles are really from nothing to something, a sharp turning movement of a flat form twisted something, out of shape in a total new exciting form,” Leon says. “It is possible to think of that form as reshaped by human perceptions”. The Baubles were fabricated in collaboration with local Warkworth firm MS Engineering. Brick Bay and the artists have worked closely with their team on numerous technically challenging projects. The creative relationship between the artist, Brick Bay and MS Engineering works to achieve an aesthetically demanding goal. “The beauty of working with sculpture is being free of the tight tolerances of structural engineering,” MS Engineering director Hugh Harvey says. “We enjoy the challenges of interpreting artists’ aspirations into an intricate build”. Leon says the challenge is making the seemingly simple forms created from paper into sublime steel objects. “Its bright colours will lighten people’s hearts, whatever the condition or time of day”. Leon grew up in The Hague, Netherlands. His earliest memories are as a five-year old at the conclusion of the war. He recalls how all the trees in the city had been cut down for heating, so as a child he did not know what a tree was. Having only ever seen black and white images of them, he would make ‘urban trees’ from all sorts of wood, broken pieces of glass and iron that could be salvaged from the street. Leon has returned to this childhood memory throughout his career, creating the Kynic Tree series of kinetic urban sculptures — colourful and playful. He enjoys creating colourful and playful three dimensional works that are whimsical and innocent, hopeful and peaceful. “There is immense joy in nature; its colour, texture and movement are sources of energy for people of all ages to draw from,” Leon says. Brick Bay Sculpture Trust supported the creation of the Baubles with a grant for fabrication of the work. General manager Anna Didsbury says supporting the careers of NZ’s sculptors is integral to the vision of Brick Bay. A private art collector recently acquired all five Baubles and the Brick Bay team relocated the work to its new home at Ti Point. The Sculpture Kynic Tree featured on the front page was also created by Leon and was one of the first pieces of art to appear on the Sculpture Trail over 10 years ago. www.brickbaysculpture.co.nz

ILONA RODGERS WORDS
Ilona Rodgers is a woman with a good story to tell. She has a sort of champagne vibrancy, the kind that quickly bubbles up to the rim and fills a room. It’s just as well, seeing as she is a senior tour leader for Fine Art Tours NZ and talking is her business.

Board, Ilona established ‘Friends of the Festival’ and brought Jacqui Wilkinson onboard. Jacqui is passionate about history and the arts. She’s also a successful business woman so it was the perfect partnership.
I can only imagine that the lucky recipients of Ilona’s tours have stars in their eyes. After all, to say she has an illustrious background in television, film, and theatre is a bit of an understatement. “Oh no, no, no!” She says with a mix of horror and bemusement. “This is completely different. I’m their tour guide and it’s my job. They are the stars of this show”. So how is it that this champion of the performing arts found herself giving art tours? Well it all boils down to an ‘aha moment’ and a strong friendship. After many years on the Auckland Arts Festival
During this time Ilona ran tours specifically for the Festival Friends. “One day Jacqui said to me, ‘Have you ever thought of doing this professionally?’ And I laughed and said, ‘Funny you should say that’. Fine Art Tours NZ was born and the rest is history. Hitting the top tier of the market with bespoke tours, business is now booming. “We’re doing more and more tours. New Zealand is now a destination that’s far more than we ever thought it could be”. Ilona is also pleased that visitors to the country don’t all fancy heading straight to Queenstown. A Warkworth local, she relishes bringing people to the Matakana Coast.
Weekend traffic aside, she has nothing but praise for the culinary delights, incredible wine, sculpture and art to be found on our patch. “We’re just so lucky. The variety that we get up here is phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal”, she said. Although she refuses to pin down her favourite spot, the breathless enthusiasm for Brick Bay Sculpture Trail and Gibbs Farm gives her away. She loves sculptures and sharing their backstories with her groups. “The thing is that you meet people that you’ll probably never see again. It’s important to make sure they come away having had a great experience.” With a guide like Ilona Rodgers, that much is guaranteed. www.finearttoursnz.co.nz/guides

ART'N'TARTAN
One of which, titled ‘Dream World the Weird and Wonderful’ invites contestants to create a piece of wearable art incorporating fluorescent fabrics, funky fibres, startling white and glow-in-thedark paint, which will all be showcased under ultraviolet light. Another new section, Beam Me Up Scottie asks artists to imagine life in the future, to explore new galaxies of imagination and to go where no designer has gone before. As the worlds greatest starship engineer, Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott would say, “You cannae change the laws of physics captain, but you can give her all she’s got!”
There’s a highland jig of excitement in the township of Waipu as the Art’n’Tartan Wearable Art Awards show fast approaches. The show was originally conceived as a small finale to the Tartan Week celebrations in 2010. Seven years later it’s Northland’s answer to the world famous Wellington World of Wearable Art contest and has developed a reputation for excellence and professionalism. Contestants and performers travel from far and wide to the magnificent Celtic Barn in Waipu for a weekend of events starting on 21 July. Show director Helen Frances will return after a year’s break and says it promises to be the best yet, with a record number of entries. Helen is planning a magnificent kaleidoscope of light, dance, music and mystery with several new Junction add 2017 QPH copy.pdf 1 21/06/17 2:31 categories to inspire creativity.
PM
Plaid is a new take on the Dress to Kilt section of previous years and although considered an “open” section, this year has inspired a large number of entries from artists who look outside the square for their creations.
All entries in the Art’n'Tartan contest must contain some element of tartan, although the amount varies between categories. The inclusion of tartan is the main point of difference from other wearable art contests. This year the show has a new choreographer, Jayden Rudolph. A former student at Bream Bay College and is now studying performing arts at Otago University. Jayden is an award winning show designer and choreographer and the Art‘n’Tartan team are excited to have him on-board. The show is split into three performances. Opening night is on 21 July at 8pm, with a 2pm matinee on the following day. The iconic Awards Night is held at 8pm on 22 July. Tickets are available from the Waipu Museum or Eventfinda and are priced from $20 to $55. www.waipumuseum.com

CHARLIE MCKENZIE
Charlie McKenzie specialies in creating artworks that are large and stunning with a significant wow factor. Charlie has been self-employed for many years, and has been a local resident of Warkworth and Snells Beach for more than forty years. Following a design and build background in specialist fiberglass products, Charlie began his art joinery 10 years ago. Having been a market leader in the windsurfing industry and then involved in the design and build of aftermarket automotive fairings and spoilers, it was a welcome change. Charlie embraced his new and exciting industry, meeting people from galleries, exhibitions and a raft of new customers. While developing large square decorative fibreglass planter pots, Charlie began experimenting with textiles in resin. This led to the discovery of screen printed Marimekko fabric from Finland. Charlie realised it was more fun, and more challenging, creating large resin infused

Marimekko fabric wall art, and decided this was the area for him.
Marimekko fabrics were incorporated into the smaller sizes so now there is a choice of sizes, prices and style.
Charlie’s new 140cm x 140cm artworks found a niche in the market for large affordable art. They sold well as limited editions and found a place in many commercial spaces through art hire companies.
Charlie is constantly creating new styles and images. 2017 has seen the introduction of some exciting new artworks. Moving ahead as a three dimensional artist Charlie has created the new ‘Vex’ style, a 140cm x 95cm “floating” convex piece.
Six years ago Charlie gave a lot of thought as to how to create a true signature look. The result was the ‘Orb’. These are round convex pieces, which Charlie is now well known for. With the introduction of the Orb to the market it was the right time to start expanding into hand painted original fabrics. The resin treatment enhances the fabrics, put simply, it takes dry ink to wet ink. The Orb shape also enhances the visual impact. The first Orb was 143cm round with original fabrics. Over time and due to customer demand, five more sizes where introduced; 135cm, 127cm, 115cm and 102cm round.
Another exciting direction is the introduction of vintage fabrics that are over 50-years-old. Most of these are Tampella fabric from Finland. Tampella stopped producing in 1968. Experimentation with solid colours and metallics is also a new style Charlie is working on. The full range now includes Orbs, Ovals, Vex and Tri styles. A full selection of these stunning artworks can be viewed at the Art Matakana exhibition from 8-29 July. www.artmatakana.com

CRAFT SHOP The Craft Shop has been located at the Country Park since 2006, but has been a favourite spot for locals and tourists for around 30-years. The members change from time to time, but many of the present members are well known. Artists like Jenny Arnerich with her local landscapes and birds, Colleen Kangwai with her Chinese Brush Painting, Lorraine Brown’s photography and Helene Bloomfield’s NZ souvenir art. Then there are six pottery artists, Marianne Mischler, Mags Krey, Berenice Howard, Karen Noakes, Thelma Smith and Emma Thatcher who produce vibrant, ever changing works. The glassware and jewellery by Lauris Mortensen, Penny and Melanie Highfield is striking. The shop has a wide range of paper products, handmade paper and books by Ann Croker, and over 500 different cards. Knitters, Linda Whittaker, Joyce Pears, and two Paulines make beautiful garments, tea cosies and more. Gloria Cunningham and Margaret Sowry’s fine sewing are very fast selling products. Other artists include Jayne Spratt, Miranda Caird and Tanya McCabe. New members are always welcome and most recent member, Lorraine North’s artisan jams are very popular. Craft Shop members are continually challenging themselves to make new products. You can meet them all as they volunteer in the shop twice per month. 1151 Leigh Road, RD5, Matakana www.craft-shop.co.nz

7TH SISTER “I love being able to take something with so much history and breathe life back into it with inventive uses of fabrics and styling. Some of the pieces I get to work on have great back stories and it’s so satisfying being able to give a heirloom piece a place in a modern home.“ The name comes from her home, which is the last remaining on site of the original 7 Sisters cottages in Warkworth. Built in 1906, they formerly housed the workmen for the cement works. The 7th Sister offers upholstery recovers, lampshade and cushion making. Find us on Facebook.

KLEUR GALLERY Kleur Gallery & Makerspace is an eclectic, vibrant art & design space located in the heart of Warkworth. The ethos of the gallery is to provide a hub for local artists & artisans to promote their work, whether they are hobbyists or professional artists. Curation is based on the quality of work rather than how established an artist may or may not be. We are also strong proponents of ecological practices with many artworks in the gallery made from recycled and re-purposed materials. The makerspace is designed to promote community participation in art & craft, particularly in art glass and jewellery making. There is real pleasure in creating something yourself and learning new skills. Many students describe it as art therapy, the opportunity to escape from their stressful lives. 029 562 2511 | 09 422 3610 www.kleurgallery.com

PUHOI DISTILLERY It’s not often you get alcohol and healthy living mentioned in the same sentence, but with master distiller Alex Kirichuk and his wife Iryna almost anything is possible. The couple hail from Ukraine and moved to New Zealand in 2002, bringing with them a wealth of expertise. Alex has a degree in nuclear power engineering and Iryna qualified in Ukraine as a medical doctor. The couple are the brains and the brawn behind the Puhoi Organic Distillery, a boutique family business, which operates on the family estate behind the Puhoi Pub. They say it’s the first and only bespoke distillery of its kind in the country. The Kirichuk’s handcraft a wide range of artisan spirits under their own brand, and also produce custom-made products under a number of private labels. Iryna spent 10-years working with the Olympic sailing team in the former Soviet Union and now utilises her many years of medical training to formulate a wide range of adaptogenic beverages. Adaptogenic is a term used for natural plant extracts that help the body deal with the damaging effects of stress. Dr Iryna Kirichuk says she is one of only a handful of practicing experts in the world. “I handcraft all our natural health related products,” Iryna says. “They are sold in a few local stores like the Puhoi General Store and the Silverdale and Orewa health shops. The range varies from herbal and fruit tonics to dairy-free dark chocolate and immune defence oral drops. My customers come back for more and are always keen to try any new product in the range”. Alex says that since MP Mark Mitchell opened their new workshop in October 2015 the distillery has gone from strength to strength. “Over 40 products have now been developed and launched,” Alex said. “The most well known are our award-winning spirits. One of the gins has already won four international awards including double gold in China and outstanding silver in London.” The ingredients are crucial and the Kirichuks use organically grown adaptogenic herbs, which form the foundation of their beverages. They also use pristine artisan water from their own bore, which is over 200 metres deep. Alex is an environmentalist and would rather use his nuclear engineering degree to distil organic alcohol. “The 1986 Chernobyl Disaster caused me to become an avid supporter of environmental sustainability. Since then I have been involved in numerous eco-friendly projects, but my work has been creating bespoke technology for the food and beverage industry. Top quality organic alcohol is the best extractor and carrier of natural adaptogens. Your liver will be impressed with our products.” The Kirichuks adhere to strict Council liquor license regulations and visits to the distillery are by invitation only. The Kirichuk family team includes daughter Victoria and they host a range of private functions, including hen and stag parties, cellar door tastings and VIP deluxe tastings. www.spirits.net.nz

Little & Local serves barista-made, locally roasted Rush coffee and a wide selection of handmade food in the heart of Snells Beach. Their goal is to live up to their name by supporting local businesses, and providing a warm and friendly atmosphere for the local community and visitors alike. Here's a great gluten free cake you'll sometimes find on the Little & Local counter. 200g soft unsalted butter 200g castor sugar 200g ground almonds 100g fine polenta (cornmeal) 1 ½ tsp baking powder 4 eggs Zest of 2 lemons (save the juice) 125g icing sugar Cake: Line the base of a 23cm / 9in springform cake tin with baking paper, grease sides. Preheat oven to 180c. Beat butter and sugar until pale and whipped. Mix almonds, polenta and baking powder, and beat some into the buttersugar mixture, add 1 egg. Alternate adding dry ingredients and eggs while beating. Beat in the lemon zest and put into prepared tin. Bake about 40 min. When cake is cooked, a tester should come out cleanish and the edges will have begun to shrink away from the sides of the tin. Place on a wire cooling rack, but leave in tin. Syrup: Boil lemon juice and icing sugar in a small saucepan until icing sugar is dissolved. Prick the top of the cake, pour the warm syrup all over. Cool before removing from tin. 6/280 Mahurangi East Road, Snells Beach

MASTER CRAFTSMAN
NEIL TAYLOR CABINET MAKER WORDS
ROD
Neil Taylor would while away the hours surrounded by wood shavings, dust and the smell of freshly sawn timber in his grandfather’s shed at Point Wells. Under his grandfather’s watchful eye, young Neil would use the array of traditional tools that hung from the wall above the workbench to craft small wooden boats. Chisels were honed to a fine edge and the hand-planes glided almost effortlessly, leaving a wake of thin spiral shavings and a perfect finish. Neil’s love for transforming timber into beautiful and functional pieces was born and many years later it’s still going strong. “I love the attention to detail, the passion, pride and care that goes into every piece. I think that’s what makes a true master craftsman,” Neil said. Both of Neil’s grandfathers were joiners and Neil was inspired by their work and decided to become a cabinetmaker. He designs and builds anything from furniture to barn-style sliding doors and complete kitchen fit-outs.
Kitchens, Bathrooms, Wardrobes, Entertainment Units, Laundries, Office
CHEESEMAN
Technology has helped speed up the process and Neil has sophisticated 3D design software that breathes life into his client’s vision. The all important fit and finish is still done by hand. “Architects keep dreaming up grand designs and we enjoy the challenge of fitting out the interior with equally unique cabinetry. Every house has its quirks, our job is to create the perfect fit.” Neil started the Warkworth based business in 2011. The country was still feeling the effects of the global financial crisis, but Neil believed it was the perfect time to get started. “We now have a team of six and work flat out. It’s a small town and reputation is everything.” www.cabinetmakers.co.nz

For most of us designing and building our dream home is just a dream, but when Rachael and Andrew Gowling discovered a beautiful beachfront section at Piper Lane in Snells Beach they made it a reality. The couple put their Warkworth house on the market, bought the land, got the pencil and paper out and designed their perfect beach house. Rachael is an account manager in the IT industry with no formal architectural training, but her initial plans were drawn up and the design concept was very clear in both their minds. They knew exactly the type of house and layout they wanted.

Rachael enlisted the help of Matakana based architect Philip Guy and builder Dave Dorhman from Housing Concepts. Three months ago the family moved in and their dream was realised. The project for the 240 square metre home took just six months to build and came in on-time and on budget. Rachael shrugs off my slightly dumbfounded look of awe as she tells the story whilst her three-year-old son Harry is busy making pretend alterations with his tool kit. Rachael and Andrew both work full-time and also have a daughter, five-year-old Grace. It’s a very busy life that many of us can recognise. My own ‘too hard basket’ was
overflowing when my kids were that age. The idea of taking on such a large building project would definitely have been slammed dunked in with the rest. For Rachael though it’s a passion, she lights up when showing me around and has a natural eye for interior design. She wanted coastal, calm, and cosy and these three words brilliantly sum up the home inside and out. Born in Australia, Rachael wanted a touch of the grand Queenslander style of home. The white weatherboard exterior, architectural lines and large verandahs definitely play homage to those grand old home. There is still a very modern look that is sleek and white. Soft contours
guide you from room to room and a multitude of textured furnishings add the cosy feel. There’s a bespoke barn-style sliding door made from re-claimed kauri and a huge dining table that Rachael restored. But it’s the brilliant design by a busy working parent that really impressed me. The kitchen is on the upper level looking out to the garden and the beach beyond, perfect for watching the children play whilst preparing a meal. Bi-fold windows open up so thatthe children can be called in for meals. The laundry is a specially designed extension of the large double garage, which maximises the winter sun for the indoor washing line. Long bench seats are ideal for stretching out on and offer a cavernous place for storage. The summer lounge downstairs has a fridge and a bench top so that beach goers don’t traipse sand throughout the house when popping back for snacks and refreshments. It’s the kind of house you hear yourself saying ‘oh that’s clever,’ over and over again. The views of course are magnificent, stretching to Kawau Island, Scandrett Regional Park, the boats at Algies Bay and across towards Tauwharanui. The house is a place to sit and soak up the coastal beauty. Small nooks with over-head heaters provide shelter from the prevailing winds so that the decks can be enjoyed year round. The Gowlings have created a family home that really does tick all the boxes. The feedback has been so positive that Rachael has started a consultancy to help others with their building projects, renovations and interior styling. Andrew and Rachael have also documented the build on Instagram and with a series of YouTube videos. Honestly I don’t know how she finds the time, but the results speak for themselves. www.loverdreamerathome.com

ART IN ARCHITECTURE Good design is so much more than inspired built expression. It has purposeful form and strict structural parameters to adhere to. Yet without that initial inspiration and without a muse to draw on, it can all fall rather flat. At design-and-build company Box™, we like to capture the art in residential architecture, taking our design cues from timeless modernist houses. We back this up with the science of rigorous engineering. Our love for mid-century design is just as great as our passion for prefabricated elements. The current technical advancements in that industry are something we are excited to explore!
Colour also has its place in built design. Swiss architect and artist Le Corbusier was known for seminal white forms such as La Villa Savoye near Paris, but in later life he embraced the rainbow. “Man needs colour to live” Le Coubusier said. Here are a few ways we use painterly touches in our houses: • A bold front door brings a pop of Mondrianlike colour. Something from a mid-century palette, such as a seafoam green from the 1950s, burnt orange from the 1960s, or even pillar-box red suits a contemporary design. • Colour blocking can be explored in coloured window panels or louvres that act like stained-glass to throw light in pretty colours into the rooms.
• Expressing structure, rather than covering it up, is a Box™ trademark. A steel joist that holds up a cantilever or exposed trusses, painted red or black for emphasis, celebrate the industriality of the design and inject some fun. • Repeat by choosing one accent colour and use it sparingly; say on the front door, in listello tiling, or on a kitchen splash-back. www.box.co.nz 0800 717 717

COUNTRY CHIC BARN STYLE Dappled Kawa Poplar trees greet you as you curve down the drive to a 195sqm barn house on 1.58 hectares. Beyond a hand crafted, wooden gate is an outdoor entertaining area framed by a sturdy timber mill slab fence concealing the car parking. Flax plantings to the fore, a rolling rural vista with the Kaipara harbour in the distance. You feel you are a million miles from city life. Birds and their chatter are your neighbours here. Hugely functional, this tasteful interior design definitely gets more than the nod of approval. Your eye will be drawn up past a mezzanine floor, to blonded plywood vaulted ceilings, down to polished concrete floors and to rustic timber open kitchen benches. A ‘Waegner’ wood burner with wetback adds to your comfort in winter. The master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and walk in wardrobe is off the living area and opens out to the lengthwise patio and view. The flooring is warm timber laminate in the bedrooms, and low maintenance tiled bathrooms. Guests have a lofty outlook from the mezzanine accommodation above the living area. The ‘piece de resistance’ is the recent 9-sqm bedroom cabin with internal solar lighting. An ideal Airbnb income opportunity or perfect for grandchildren. Style and functionality come to mind with this labour of love. MATAKANA GOES GREEN
Matakana has a large number of passionate locals - both individuals and in groups, who care deeply about our environment. Getting these like-minded people together to form the Matakana Green Collective seemed like the natural next step with a view to broadening their network of supporters and getting the word out into the community. One of the first Matakana Green Collective initiatives largely driven by Josie Jackson, is Plastic Free July, which has been embraced wholeheartedly by the community. Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the problems with single-use disposable plastic and challenges people to do something about it. There are many other towns already fully committed to this initiative, from Raglan to Picton and Manly Beach in Australia.
38
Damian from Matakana Four Square is supportive of Plastic Free July and has already made changes to give customers alternative options in his store. His reusable fresh produce bags sold out in less than a week but don’t worry, he’s restocked and now has plenty more. Josie has been working with Damian to help support the initiative, and from 1 July there will be a bag station with wonderful community-made bags that can be borrowed and returned the next time you’re in the store. There have been many bag-making bees happening in the community over the last few weeks to make sure there are over 200 borrow bags available in July. You’ll recognise these bags with the vibrant Green Collective logo which has been hand screen printed and lovingly sewn onto the bags.
If you’re wondering how you can show your support, the most useful thing you can do is to remember to bring your own bags when you shop in Matakana and refuse single use plastic bags if you're offered them. Let retailers know that you’ve made the decision to say no to single use plastic bags. Matakana Village has already made moves to help the environment when late last year the Zero Waste initiative was rolled out in the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market by Anna Didsbury and Market Manager Fiona McGeogh. The long-term plan is to extend Zero Waste into the whole Village while businesses like The Tuck Shop already embrace these practices with compostable packaging even down to the straws! Another active Green Collective member is
Trish Allen from Mahurangi Waste Busters. The organisation is currently in the process of registering as a charitable trust and will then submit an expression of interest in setting up community recycling centres in Snells Beach and Wellsford. Their vision is to increase the range of services for the community with a reuse shop, a repair shed, a men's/women's shed and also commodities processing - cardboard, plastic, metal, and at a later date create further community gardens, an education pod and composting site. So there’s a lot of ‘green’ activities going on in Matakana and with the addition of a Green Collective event in the Matakana Village on Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 July, you’ll be able to learn more about the environment, the initiatives underway and how you can get involved. There will be kids’ activities, a special movie screening, sew your own bag classes, food, drinks and more. Matakana Green Collective Event, Matakana Village, Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 July 2017 If you’d like to be involved in the event please email amanda@brickbay.co.nz and for enquiries regarding Plastic Free July email matakanagreencollective@gmail.com Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 July

OWL COMMUNITY GROUP WORDS
When a community has a sense of belonging, magic can happen. Nothing truer could be said for the Old Wellsford Library Community Hub (OWL). When a new library was built in town, an opportunity emerged; what to do with the old building? Sitting sad and empty was not an option. In 2013 a determined group of locals put together a proposal to Council where they shared a vision of what it could look like and how it could work. Unfortunately, that vision wasn’t shared by Council and a lengthy debate unfolded for two years. Eventually, the Rodney Local Board came to the rescue with financial assistance. Funding was

MILLAR
allocated to employ a part-time coordinator, and assist with much needed renovations of the rundown building. Ownership of the community built establishment is now back in its rightful place and it’s up to the locals of Wellsford to make it thrive again. Enter Filani Macassey, newly appointed coordinator of the OWL Hub. Filani is no stranger to community engagement, she created a strong art movement in her former hometown, Helensville and she’s excited about the role.
“We can stretch beyond our humble building, it’s about collaborating with all kinds of local groups to achieve more. We’re not trying to conflict or compete with anyone, I’m just keen to get the ideas up and running and coordinate the process. At the moment we’re trialling a once a month Saturday Market, I’d love to see that spread out through town, not just from our building. At the end of the day, our philosophy is sharing info, knowledge and resources to make things happen.” www.facebook.com/Owl-Community-HubWellsford
“It’s important for Wellsford to have a hub. It’s got to work for everyone, not just art and craft folk,” Filani says.

A PEG ABOVE THE REST WORDS
KAYE
MEULLER
Peg is a green clothes peg spotted by local Leigh character David Crockett. It was laying in the dust at the bottom of a photo advertising a pile of free bricks on the Love Leigh community FaceBook page. Instead of buying the bricks, David asked if he could purchase the peg for the grand total of one dollar, and donate four dollars to the local school. The owner agreed. So he bought the peg and made the donation to the 50-pupil Leigh School. He posted some humorous comments and pictures on the community page and suggested that everyone buys Peg and makes a donation to the school. Meanwhile, Peg has enjoyed many local walks, done a day’s work landscaping, been SUP boarding, gate-crashed a wedding, gone sightseeing with students from Minnesota University, worked in Leigh’s marine lab, was held for ransom, worked in Auckland and went to a Lions match. She is already booked to go on three overseas trips. Peg has raised almost $800 for the school and even has her own dedicated FB page. There is an option for people to use a Peg stunt double if they live out of the area or overseas. Peg’s funds are earmarked for a pool repaint. www.leigh.school.nz/ www.facebook.com/LoveLeighPeg

INAUGURAL CREATIVE MATAKANA, A SUCCESS! WORDS
KATHY
HUNTER
The first Creative Matakana has received rave reviews from participants, tutors and volunteers alike. The comments given regarding the week of creative workshops in May were unanimously positive. “Can't think of anything to better this wonderful week.” “Fantastic – have enjoyed the whole thing and will do it again!” “Great promo of the Matakana and Mahurangi district. Creative Matakana again next year please!” “I have had a wonderful week, but am aware of how much effort the volunteers have contributed... many, many thanks to everyone.” Creative Matakana course tutors were recruited from around New Zealand. They were all highly qualified and, in many cases, multi award-winning masters of their art. Courses included eco-dyeing and felting with Marion van Oeveren, fiction writing with author Owen Marshall, kiln-formed glass and sandblasting with Liz Sharek, digital photography with David Wethey, flax (harakeke) weaving with Kahutoi Te Kanawa and sculpture with Jeff Thomson. Food and wine were celebrated too in this area of exceptional local producers. At four beautiful venues, leading New Zealand chefs worked with artisans and winemakers to showcase their work in creative three course lunches. There were shared stories and tastings of delectable local products. Vines Sea Fire Earth
Renowned Auckland chef Ben Bayly from the Grove and Baduzzi Guilio Sturla, chef of Lyttleton’s Roots restaurant Metro Auckland Chef of the Year Dariush Lolaiy Rising star of modern Maori cuisine Monique Fiso
Finally, a happy group were guided around Gibbs Farm open-air sculpture park by Brick Bay art specialist Jonathan Organ. A team of marvelous Matakana volunteers did everything from catering and providing venues to assisting the tutors, acting as guides and doing airport runs. Participants from all over New Zealand, Australia and even the United States learned from the talented tutors, exchanged ideas and met others with diverse creative interests. They also discovered the beaches, vineyards, walks, markets and boutiques of Matakana and Warkworth. The date is set for Creative Matakana 2018 and some brilliant courses are already locked in. OPERA AT THE VIVIAN For the last two years Matakana has enjoyed the opportunity to see world class opera performances outdoors at Jones Rd and in the Vivian Gallery. At Jones Rd this year the Studio ran the second of its annual outdoor picnic concerts, featuring one of its outstanding students, Malena Devoe, singing to an audience of over 550. All this activity springs from the talented, world class voice coach, Frances Wilson. Frances is now a local resident. Her list of students encompasses many that tread the international opera stages of the world. Frances was recognised for her services to opera in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, with an ONZOM. Her students have won places in the most prestigious singing schools offshore, and many have gone on to join the top opera companies in America and Europe. Auckland Opera Studio is a non-profit charitable organisation, that trains and polishes young talent with the potential to make it to the top of this demanding profession. For a relaxed introduction to opera the Vivian is currently running the Vivian Studio winter season, which showcases some of the country's best talent. Grab a deck chair for a slice of opera next February when the Studio plans to be back at Jones Road. Or book a seat at the Bellini version of Romeo and Juliet at the Mercury Theatre, on September 2/3. Tickets $50 per person 09 422 9995 thevivian@thevivian.co.nz
