The Dune is Mangawhai’s latest restaurant brag - offering a smartcasual Kiwi BBQ experience with all the swag of an inner city address, less the pomp or pretence. Behind this masterpiece are three unassuming blokes with distinct roles to play and colourful stories to share. Mangawhai might be home to their latest creation, but there’s also The Cove in Waipu and The Quay in Whangarei. This is a big business. To put it into perspective, at any given time you will find up to a dozen chefs in each kitchen. The owners rent eight local properties to accommodate staff, and advertising for new recruits never stops. Their own farm, Highgate Hill, supplies beef and the fresh stuff comes from The Vege Shack (more on that later). Behind the establishments are Lloyd Rooney and his partner Mike Fraser, plus Executive Chef, Craig Estick. To say they manage restaurants is a gross disservice. Restless entrepreneurs, with more projects in the pipeline is more like it. English-born, Lloyd is the epitome of a hospitality front man. His energy is crazy, his intellect and wit - next level. Keeping pace with his chat is tricky; it moves fast and has that Brighton dialect. Hospitality is his big love, but throw in a background in law, global interior design businesses, restaurant ownership, and now a published book – it’s a sizable life story so far. Why Northland? Lloyd feels this is an under-rated area, full of exciting growth, opportunity, and vibrant people. The beaches are what draw people in and he believes good hospitality should rub shoulders with stunning coastline. While Lloyd is the overall facilitator, he calls Executive Chef, Craig, the ‘Mary Poppins’ of their brand, “Craig is the lifeblood of our business. He will breeze in with his latest concept; tell the staff how it is and place robust systems behind everything. He’ll then train the hell out of everyone and bugger off when satisfied.” He has utter faith in Craig and credits the success of each restaurant to his innovative menus. While front of house and food are sorted, essentially everything starts with Mike. Getting things to the plate is not just a happy accident; Mike wears the food production hat and runs their latest baby, The Vege Shack, based in Maungakaramea. All those leafy goodies in your mojito and greens on your plate are thanks to the success of The Vege Shack – ‘Sown & Grown in Northland’s Own.’ How good is that by-line! Soon you’ll also find a pop-up Vege Shack at The Cove on Saturdays.
Mike (left) with Lloyd outside The Cove, Waipu.
Small towns can be harsh critics; rub one local up the wrong way and the Facebook pages will pounce. The Dune is relaxed, yet aware of this. Lloyd’s brief to staff is the same across all three establishments; “It’s simple: hand-on-heart, do your very best on any given day – bugger a dress code, everyone is welcome and they can sit where they like. If we do these basics right, we’ll be fine. The other important thing is supporting locals. Wherever possible we’ll put money back into the community.” How is everything juggled? Good staff is critical and Lloyd’s vision is to build an attractive brand, a place where people want to work. He will always overstaff his venues and move people around, keeping

them invigorated. Complementing a great team is beautiful interior design. Lloyd has enjoyed tapping into this scene again; he formerly owned design stores ‘RevelLloyd’ in London, with Craig Revel Horwood (Dancing with the Stars judge, Celebrity Chef). Controlling light to best effect and making the space welcome is the vision behind The Dune’s decor. About now Lloyd recounts a delightful story of working for Stoll-Moss (London’s leading theatre empire) as a young lad. On one particular occasion, his only task was to open the door for Her Majesty the Queen. Suited and booted in his red coat and a nervous blood nose later, he was ready. But Prince Phillip reached that door first and beat him to the chase – a rather awkward moment! How did we even land here? Lloyd’s mind is zippy – it doesn’t rest. Next a memory is shared of an awful design project for Kevin Spacey’s apartment… You get the picture - the history is gritty, the stories fabulous. Even as the ink dries, the crew have two more restaurants smouldering away with 2017 launch dates. This really is a tale of daring to dream and having the gumption to go for it. www.facebook.com/TheDuneMangawhai

playing the second lead, Javert, in Les Miserables. Junction caught up with him in Waipu, home for Christmas. What’s your best memory about growing up where you did? I didn't realise how lucky I was until I left really. I love the waterfalls at Waipu gorge [Piroa Falls] – I actually visualise them as my ‘safe place’ when meditating. I try to visit them whenever I am home. How and when did you start becoming aware that you could sing? I was very shy as a child. My grandmother took me to see a show at the local amateur theatre company to increase my confidence. A friend at high school was in the theatre company so I decided to give it a go. I didn't really know I could sing until I auditioned to be honest. How did it develop? I was drawn to musicals because of the way the characters have to be pushed to such a heightened state of emotion that speaking is no longer enough – the only thing to do is burst into song. That intense emotion and escapism really appealed to me. Performance was not exactly the cool thing to do at school but I never felt harassed by my peers. I'm sure they thought I was a bit weird and I did feel different, but that wasn't necessarily due to performing. It wasn't till later in life that I realised that ‘different’ just means ‘unique’ – which we all are. I just knew I had to do ‘me’. Who were you most influenced by musically as a teenager? Frank Sinatra, Elaine Paige, Darrel Lovegrove, Anthony Warlow... see, I was always a little different, ha! How much of your success do you owe to your mentors in NZ? I trained with Joan Kennaway in Whangarei and owe her so much of my confidence, passion, work ethic, drive – and love. She not only taught me solid singing technique and stage presence but to have the confidence to be true to myself. Hayden in character as Javert. Credit: Ellis Parrinder.
First big break?
Growing up in Maungaturoto in the early eighties, Hayden Tee admits he was ‘not your typical rural Kiwi boy’. You couldn’t get a more rural upbringing: on his mum Debbie’s side he’s the fourth generation of the Brooks Motors family who have run buses for 80 years out of the small town west of the Brynderwyns. Funding from them helped to build the Otamatea Repertory Theatre where, years later, the young Hayden first hit the stage.
After my final year of high school, I went to do a one-week holiday course at NIDA drama school in Sydney. I knew that Kate Blanchett, Mel Gibson and Toni Collett had been there. It was my first time abroad and I was alone and terrified, but at the end of that week the tutors asked me to come back and audition for the musical theatre course. Three weeks later I moved to Sydney to study full time.
Lachie McLean, director of the theatre at the time (now well-known director of the Waipu Pageant and many other shows), remembers him well. “Even as a kid, whenever the stage door was open at the theatre, Hayden was there – he just wanted to be part of everything in any way he could.” Lachie also remembers the look that he and legendary voice coach Joan Kennaway QSM exchanged when Hayden sang at his first proper audition. “It was a big voice all right… we knew he’d go far.”
Winning the New York award at the Sydney Cabaret. The prize was to go and perform in New York City (which I now call home). I knew as soon as I walked down Broadway and saw all the theatres that to be there was the dream.
Fast forward a couple of decades or so, and Hayden has just finished performing on Broadway and in the brand-new Dubai Opera House,
Have you been inspired by others who have played Javert?
When was your first big overseas break?
What’s your weekly regime, practice-wise? Once a show is up and running it becomes mostly about staying healthy. The main thing is to rest my vocal chords so I can perform eight shows a week. Philip Quast made a huge name for himself with Javert in Australia, so

for me, starting the role there was daunting at first. But I always like to pretend that I’m the first person to play the role so returning to the source is essential – in this case the novel by Victor Hugo. When I finish my Javert journey next April I will have realised my dream to play the role in Australia, Broadway and the West End, and have added Dubai as well, which is all I could personally hope for. What’s the opera house in Dubai like? Amazing – the pictures say it all! I am in awe every day. The seats, for example, are made by Ferrari. It’s out of this world. We’re the first musical to play here which is a huge honor. Does it feel just a bit surreal at times performing there as the boy from Maungaturoto? Walking the streets of Broadway, the West End or Dubai I’ll often suddenly realise where I am and where I’ve come from. It can be overwhelming at times. When I first saw my picture and name up outside the theatre on Broadway I couldn't breathe. What’s next for you? I’ll be heading to London soon to do one more season of Javert in the West End, then in May I’m off to Sydney to play the roles of Lea Sonia/ Lana in the musical ‘Only Heaven Knows’. I knew after three years of Javert I wanted something completely different, so when offered the role of a comic female impersonator from the famous Tivoli stage of the 1930s I thought to myself – well, I can't get much further away from Javert than that – sure, I'd love to! Ha!

beEternal is a boutique, premium line of skin care products containing bee venom and Manuka honey. This labour of love takes place in the heart of the Matakana village by partners, Diane Breen and Debbie and Paul Hodder. These luxurious creams are made with predominantly organic ingredients, essential oils and homeopathics along with the key ingredients of bee venom and Manuka honey. While these exclusive products would fall into the “anti-aging” category of skin care and are extremely effective, the philosophy of these Partners-in-Cream is not “anti-aging”, but feeling good and looking great while doing it.

THANK S
TO
THE
DIDSBURY
F AMILY
The caravan perched on the edge of the lawn where the house is now sited.
Early in December the Didsburys threw a party. They were celebrating thirty years of shared stewardship of what was, in 1986, a raw chunk of land and is now lush with grapevines, regenerating native bush, productive orchards and gardens. Studding the landscape, making it more than just a farm, is exceptional art and architecture. And all the people at the party – around a hundred – were instrumental in helping to accomplish this metamorphosis. Richard Didsbury is enthusiastic about the strong feeling of ownership many of these friends and family members have for Brick Bay. “Kids grew up here; some still think of it as their place,” he says happily. “And it was, actually, as much as ours. Brick Bay has been a kind of home for many.” This January it’ll be ten years since the Glass House and Sculpture Trail opened, but twenty years of hard work came before that. Two hundred acres of land were purchased by Richard and Christine in 1986; they’d only been looking for a small plot, but realised the potential of this extraordinary site with its historical background. In the midnineteenth century there had been a busy little community based around the brickworks on the beach. But nearly 150 years later, the brickworks were gone (although traces remain) and the unfenced land was dissipated. There were thistles in their hundreds, and what bush had been spared by the early settlers was being given a hard time by cattle. The Didsburys moved a caravan on to the spot where the ‘Big House’ would eventually be finished over ten years later, and with their two small girls, Margot and Anna, began spending weekends on the farm.
They fenced off the precious bush, and friends and family were drafted in to plant trees in their thousands – their hard work rewarded with plenty of fun and huge shared barbecues. The cattle were moved out and angora goats bought to graze the land, but the meat was not popular and the mohair market promptly crashed. Inspired by the other early adopters in the area (Heron’s Flight and The Antipodean), the Didsburys turned to grapes. The willing workers were drafted back in to plant the first vines (as well as olives) in 1995. Fortunately, the wine proved to be excellent. The goats were replaced with sheep which were easy on the land (and popular too in the Glass House restaurant). A few years down the track, they thought they should probably build “a little wine-tasting room, and something else to make people want to come and visit.” Architect Noel Lane was asked to design what would become The Glass House, and the couple decided to indulge their internationally-ignited passion for outdoor sculpture as ‘that little something extra’. Noel Lane had already, of course, built their home, and they trusted him enough to give him a basic brief for the tasting room and not much more. Richard and Christine thought that visitors should be able to see the vines as they were drinking the wine; to feel part of the terroir (the unique environmental characteristics that produce a particular wine). Noel took this literally, producing a contemporary version of an actual glasshouse, and with Rob Dunne the builder, bravely cantilevering his beautiful, award-winning vision over a lake full of water-lilies.

Brick Bay before the arrival of the Glass House...
...and after. Noel Lane said, “we’ll just have to make another road over to the vineyard!”
“He’s one of a very rare breed of architect.” Richard screws his eyes shut to find the right words. “It’s not that he brings nothing to the table – he has incredible talent – but he designs each piece of work to fit its particular brief without feeling the need to impose his own style. You’d never know that Matakana Village and the Glass House at Brick Bay were designed by the same man.”
Trail over at Brick Bay. Anna had studied sculpture at Elam (and viticulture too, including working a vintage in Burgundy, France; this has certainly come in handy). She and her father, plus long-time farm and vineyard manager Brian Breen, spent hours tracking through the bush and paddocks with tape, stakes and paint, mapping out the route and planning dams, lakes and boardwalks.
At this point in time, the whole Matakana area was beginning to look like it might become a bona fide wine region – but it had no real epicenter and, apart from the beaches, there was really not much to do. Serendipitously, the corner site at Matakana Valley Rd and Leigh Rd became available – and the idea for the village was born. Richard admits, “It’s such an enormous responsibility when you make a decision that will impact on so many lives; it is human nature to resist change. But hopefully most people are happy with it now.”
One of the main purposes of the Sculpture Trail (apart from being an exceptional showcase for the art) is to support NZ artists. The Brick Bay Sculpture Trust is a special fund set up to facilitate the creation of their work – building some of the large-scale pieces can be prohibitively expensive. All pieces on the trail are for sale and, once their piece is sold, the artist pays the Trust back their interest-free loan. The Annual Brick Bay Folly competition is another valuable opportunity for aspiring young architects to realise their concepts and get them into the public eye.
While the village and Glass House builds were going ahead, Anna Didsbury, now in her twenties, was involved in designing the Sculpture
The ongoing programme of sustainably nurturing the land at Brick Bay has evolved into a firm goal of environmental stewardship for future generations. The baton has been passed to Anna Didsbury, now General Manager. Anna has a keen interest in sustainability and puts it to good use, both in the vineyard and in the Glass House Kitchen. Minimal sprays are used on the vines, and biodiversity is encouraged in a number of ways. Food waste from the restaurant is enjoyed by the farm’s pigs and hens, and the kitchens and bathrooms use biodegradable products and palm oil-free soaps. Much produce, including fruit, vegetables, olive oil and honey is produced onsite and as much as possible is recycled.
John Baker on behalf of the Matakana Country Park wishes to extend his warmest congratulations to Richard Didsbury and all those involved with Brick Bay Wines on celebrating so many glorious years of success.
These two generations of the Didsburys (with a third in the wings) have a passionate, long-term commitment to a much-loved landscape – and a community. As Christine says, “The thing is never to assume that you know it all, but to surround yourself with exceptionally creative people with whom you can collaborate. It’s been the most wonderful privilege to be part of it all.” Brick Bay is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a series of summer events. | www.brickbay.co.nz

The marvellous Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) is really coming into its own this summer. MAZ’s main man, Colin Gallagher, is very enthused by the latest round of improvements. “Our last working bee has seen some fantastic new facilities added to the original innovative playground,” he said. “The cricket pitch is now open, with all-weather Tiger Turf, and so is the junior football field, all marked up with permanent nets. And the new pirate ship (right) really is superb!” Add to that the skate park and bowls which will be upgraded to Olympic level this year and you have a serious facility for fun. But wait, there’s more. Pump tracks, for use by BMX and mountain bikes are coming too – the junior level will soon be complete, with intermediate and senior on their way. So is a 12-station outdoor crossfit facility – and a soundshell eventually, for future concerts and events. “Oh, and the carpark is being extended and upgraded too,” Colin adds. “No more potholes. There’s even a CCTV camera setup for security – which has already proven its worth by filming a stolen boat being driven past a couple of weeks ago!” There are family bbqs available on the grounds too for summer evenings. Gear up your littlies (and biggies) for MAZ – there’s so much going on there in 2017 it’ll be the only place they’ll want to be. www.mangawhaiactivityzone.co.nz Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai | Colin T: 021 955 850

Getting to the Didsbury’s ‘Big House’ is a journey on a number of levels. Winding through folds in the magnificent Brick Bay landscape you’ll spot what looks like a kauri dam, jaw-dropping standing stones, intriguing large-scale art on headlands. There’s a brief, tantalising glimpse of the house itself, with its massive brick tower. You park, then you’re in a narrow, winding foot corridor with tall, stacked-timber walls, before the big reveal. Suddenly the house is looming over you, all massive beams and angled buttresses. The scale of the building has an epic feel to it, like a medieval castle’s keep. One of the awards won by Architect Noel Lane called it romantic but really, it’s all testosterone. Christine Didsbury says, “We felt we needed to ‘go large’ or risk the house being overpowered by the landscape.” Many materials went into the build: steel, copper, zinc, glass, timber shingles, stone, bricks, riverstones and concrete – but it’s the timber that stands out. Massive recycled beams and columns with the patina of age give the house its overwhelming scale and groundedness. The wood came from all over New Zealand – and Richard Didsbury knows the story behind every piece. “We worked with Andrew Davies, who owned the Kauri Warehouse in Otahuhu,” says Richard. “He was the go-to guy then – still is – for finding recycled native wood, and he’d go to amazing lengths to get it. A lot of the big rimu beams came from the Horotiu Freezing Works when it was demolished in 1989. The totara columns in the kitchen were from the central North Island, where there were almost legendary piles of huge native trees clear-felled in the sixties. Totara, matai and rimu… they were found by Andrew and his boys in the pine plantations down there… We stuck to Noel’s plans, but often the materials we used were informed by what Andrew had found for us.” We tracked down Andrew Davies and asked him if he remembered the Big House build. “They were one of my best clients,” he confirmed. Richard had helped him out enormously in return for his efforts: when Richard built Sylvia Park years later in 2006, there were around 50 warehouses on the site which the army had built in the forties. They had to be demolished – and timber-loving Richard made sure all the native timbers in there were recycled by Andrew and not just trashed. The massive front door is made of cubes of oregon fir, which was once used as ballast inside the hulls of steamships coming to NZ from Canada in the early 1900s. Once inside, a hall invites you down to the enormous main living space; giant bespoke French doors open on either side. There are gardens one way and glorious views of the Hauraki Gulf on the other. Dominating the room, the colossal brick chimney which has become the visual branding of Brick Bay rises up through the ceiling. From the outside, the chimney is reminiscent of many things: a lighthouse, a smelter (referencing the old copper works on Kawau) an ancient grain silo – “Someone even once thought it might be a crematorium!” laughs Christine. Turkish rugs and leather poufs inside the actual chimney breast make for a cosy nook in winter.
LIGHT MATA MASSAGE * HOT STONE * DEEP TISSUE * THERAPEUTIC * RELAXING Release stress and restore wellbeing for quality of life. Treat yourself – you deserve to! The ultimate gift for loved ones, family, friends or colleagues.
Opposite: cosy seating inside the chimney was inspired by Richard and Christine’s travels. From top: the first glimpse of the house; the impressive entrance way with its massive door. In the open plan kitchen there’s very little storage space – glasses, mugs and plates are all out on the bench. This is completely intentional – Christine says it worked brilliantly when they had loads of people staying here in days gone by. “Nobody had to ask where anything went – you could see it all,” she says. The table continues the practicalities of crowd-wrangling – it can easily seat 16. The group of spectacularly-coloured lightshades above the table were purchased this year from a Colombian recycling-meets-art project (petlamp. org) – they’re made of plastic bottles split from the neck down into strips; the strips are interwoven with raffia, wool or cane. Inside the front door, two staircases lead up; one to the office and master bedroom, one to guest bedrooms and the ‘third’ storey which comprises an exciting mid-air walkway across to the inside of the brick tower. There’s a lot of fun to be had here – it’s an artisanal wonderland of nooks and hideaways. One guest bedroom, hung with colourful Japanese kites on one side and an ingeniously displayed hat collection on the other, has a mezzanine level reached by an oversized ladder. Another is known as the ‘Sports Room’ for it’s collation of vintage sporting accessories. Yet another fascinating room has a museum-level assemblage of vintage explorer’s curios.
30
Two stories of wall height inside the entranceway have deliberately been left without coverings so the studs and noggins are visible – and usable. These were finished to a higher standard than normal and have become repositories of further collections: the main stairway is lined with little figures from all over the world, and Christine’s medleys of masks glower and grin from a downstairs corridor. Christine says, “Let me show you the tennis pavilion.” We walk along another winding path; the court appears first, then a building that takes the breath away. The counterpoint to the Big House – the Venus to its Mars perhaps – the pavilion was also built by Noel Lane. A sleek modern box of glass, steel and travertine, it’s fully self-contained and high-spec. But here it’s all about the roof: made by boatbuilders, it’s a convex shell of thin and elegant timbers, like a feather floating on a pond. A visit to the Didsbury’s Big House is an adventure – there’s always something extraordinary to discover around the next corner. It’s half a lifetime’s work-in-progress… and now that it’s owners have a little more time to themselves, there’s little doubt that their collection of global art and culture will also expand.
Opposite; the elegant tennis pavilion floats above the court. Clockwise from top left: the guest book; the sports room; stamp collection dating back to Richard’s grandfather; wooden figurines line the stairs; Virginia King sculptures hang in the stairwell; Japanese kites; Rajasthani chairs in the Waka Room; bronze kettle sculptures by Jonathan Campbell; glass vessel by Ann Robinson; birds by Crystal Chain Gang.

The team, left to right: Anna Didsbury, Lindy Neumann, Dan Paine and Nadia Acosta.
Tuck shops don’t always conjure up memories of exceptional food, but this one will dispel any lingering aftertastes. You can’t miss Tuck Shop Matakana, the new eatery outside the Matakana Cinema. It’s a very deliberate green – owner Dan Paine says, “We wanted it to stand out! It’s a fresh take on a classic colour, and we wanted it to evoke nostalgia – school canteens, uniforms and diners.” Inside, there are other greens: the British Racing Green of the menus and powder-coated coffee machine; the forest green (and fresh white)
tiling; the lime pop of the stools and the soft duck-egg of the banquette seating. Vintage metal school chairs outside came from Java – sourced by Old School Inc. in Matakana. They’ll soon be joined by green bean bags which can be reclined upon outside in the cinema courtyard. Anna and Dan haven’t mucked around with architect Noel Lane’s existing design of the space, which was initially envisaged as a nod to a tram-car (check out the interior ceiling). ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, was their philosophy. This applied to other things too. “One of the first decisions we made was to retain both the OOB icecream brand and the OOB shop manager, Nadia,” says Dan. “She’s such a people person, and gives the whole place an incredibly welcoming feel. Lindy Neumann is in charge of the food overall – she’s a passionate food professional who’s been working on refining the Tuck Shop menu for months.” Co-owner Anna Didsbury says, “We’ve been amazingly lucky with the people who’ve been involved in the start-up of the Tuck Shop. Nadia and Lindy threw themselves into it with such passion. Our friends Tana Mitchell and Emma Kanuik of Akin Design too – they were responsible for the aesthetic, and they had a great time with it.”w There’s a small and crafted menu of wittily-named classics with a twist. There are New York-style pressed sandwiches (the Rube, the Cube – Reuben and Cuban), great burgers on demi-brioche buns with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. They do a range of interesting salads, and plenty of yummy stuff for the kids, too.

The crisp interior of the Tuck Shop - the clever window tables both fold and swivel to make a continuous counter inside when the weather is inclement.
Sweets can be raw and sugar free: a raw blueberry cheesecake for example – or you can go all-out and create your own outrageous decadent chewy cookie and OOB ice-cream sandwich. And nothing on the menu is more than $15 – burgers are $13, kid’s meals (Tiny Tucks) are no more than $8. It’s nice to know that everything is free-range and locally sourced where possible. And all the packaging (including the Eighthirty coffee-cups and lids) is plant-based and compostable. Anna is keen to initiate sustainable waste disposal so they’re also supplying their own compost bins.
These two have an earnest and utterly sincere desire to be as good as they can possibly be. Their aims are modest: “We want to be the best cinema and hospitality experience in the country,” says Dan. “And to be the best employers, too,” adds Anna. Their ambition is most definitely our gain. How far past your fridge will you travel for fabulous food? Our brunch at the Sandbar Eatery in Mangawhai left me pondering this. Chef and owner Andrew Rennie set up the Sandbar with his brother Mark seven years ago. These days though he’s flying solo, albeit with the help of his exceptional team, and has just completed a very stylish re-fit via Kim Munro Designs and Jessica from Oh Gosh Graphic Design. The new look is far from the crush and clang of a Ponsonby café. The interior is light and contemporary with generously-spaced tables; outside there’s a large shaded outdoor seating area set around a courtyard that’s perfect for those travelling with children. Suzanne (Andrew’s wife) is the maitre’d and we’re all smiling even before we see the brunch menu, which reads extremely well and drives our expectations further northwards. It occurs to me that Andrew looks more front-row forward than foodie and as it happens, he played rugby in the UK and Europe for seven years. His parents, who had moved to Mangawhai, suggested that he and his brother set up a restaurant there. Andrew had always been a passionate amateur chef and his parents clearly recognised his potential; he is now a professional who cooks with exceptional flair and consideration. We started with the Smashed Avocado, served with a perfectly poached egg on five-grain toast with pingy capers, cherry tomatoes and a sensational whipped feta. This might be enough but the ‘extra points

Next up was the Turkish Poached Eggs with cold smoked salmon, chilli, smoked yoghurt and dukkah on toasted sourdough. The richness of the eggs and herbed salmon was answered eloquently with lemon zest and chilli, and the smoked yoghurt gave this familiar dish a delicious point of difference.
I drove back to Leigh wondering just how far I’d travel to eat food this good. The answer is; a very long way.

The Klinks are a family of foodies. Their son Dan now runs the Mangawhai Meat Shop and recently won the supreme award at this year’s Great NZ Sausage Competition. Their daughter Amy and her partner Sam are based in Melbourne where Sam works as a chef, but this summer they will be returning to run a pop-up breakfast and lunch cafe at the Cow Shed from December 27 to January 27. Wendy and Robert will be serving dinner seven nights a week over this time too (normally just Fri/Sat/Sun nights). My slightly less thin editor and I concluded that the experience is well worth a trip down a few gravel roads – with or without a sidecar. Bookings essential. BYO. Event enquiries welcome. 53 Pebblebrooke Road, Mangawhai T: 09 431 2354 | E: thecowshedandshop@hotmail.co.nz
“Oh!” I squealed as we were bouncing down a particularly bucolic back road somewhere near Mangawhai, “this is just like ‘Two Fat Ladies’ except we don’t have a motorcycle or sidecar and only one of us is fat.” Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by Wendy and Robert Klink who converted their old cow shed into a restaurant four years ago. The decor is vintage and homely with shelves of homemade pickles and chutneys and the original cow shed rails separate those who have yet to eat from those who are already wrestling their huge portions of delicious, spitroasted meat into submission. The Cow Shed is all about simple food done well. The menu is set (chicken, lamb or sirloin steak when we went) and they ask you to choose your mains when you make your booking. This takes a great deal of waste and stress out of the equation and makes choosing your BYO wine very easy.

Ann Dewey, the world-famous, award-winning choreographer, perches on a couch covered with a crocheted throw in shades of vibrant red. As her fingers perform a filigree dance to the click-clack of knitting needles, Ann talks about her latest project: the Knitting Truck. “I wanted to create a mobile knitting shop for folk to come and sit, chat and knit, buy supplies and knitwear, and connect with other craftspeople,” says Ann. In truth, the Knitting Truck is not actually a truck. While Ann searches for a suitable mobile home for her fibre art, the devoted Leigh resident has parked her intensely hued yarns and hand-knitted garments for the summer in the gallery attached to Charlie’s ice cream parlour between Warkworth and Matakana. Ann learned her handicraft from her grandmother and the timehonoured skill has served her well in her travels around the world as a choreographer. “We’d hang around studios for hours during dance rehearsals and I like to keep my hands engaged. I’d ferret out the local knitting shop, buy my needles and yarn and make up my own patterns.” In 2009, her dance company, Spinning Sun, performed a contemporary dance entitled Left and Right. “All the costumes and set were knitted by hand. Garments arrived in my Leigh PO Box from knitters all over the world,” grins Ann. She brings out one of the costumes; a weighty, salmon pink skirt created from fabric she’d shredded then knitted.
46
The entire dance project took two years to complete. It seems there are many parallels between choreography and knitting. Both are saturated in texture, there is a sense of delight, a playful joy in experimenting with pattern and form. In the rhythm of the needles there is music for the soul. One of Ann’s favourite quotes is from the famous American choreographer, Martha Graham: “The purpose of technique is to free the unconscious.” Now, Ann wants to pass on this joyful art. She has noticed a certain renaissance in all handcrafts. “People are returning to the idea of making things by hand. They’re stepping away from the synthetic trend and embracing beautiful locally-made products. I stock a huge variety of yarn – my favourite is hand-dyed by my neighbour whose company is called ‘Dye-Happy’.” Ann encourages people to come along a give knitting a try. “New converts could start with something simple like the humble dishcloth,” she advises. Pop in to Ann’s Knitting Truck for a yarn. Who knows, you might just become entangled in knitting’s woolly web. The original hall, early 1900s.
Rejuvenated wall mouldings from the upstairs gallery.
The historic Warkworth Town Hall’s renovation is coming along very nicely. It’s been a challenge – compared to the pretty Masonic down the road it’s been no oil painting for a long time now. But Junction’s midNovember visit made it clear: this is going to be an impressive makeover for an important piece of history.
Inside, plaster dust eddies in shafts of sunlight through tall, elegant windows as builders enjoy their smoko. The height of the stud is a revelation. Classic Art Deco triple-stepped lines and zigzag plaster details edge the ceiling. In the foyer, the cashier’s window has been beautifully replicated, and protective slabs of ply on the floor reveal the most stunning mosaic floor in shades of ox-blood, cream, burnt orange and creamy gold – thousands of tiny tiles in perfect condition, just needing a buff and a protective coating.
When it was built in 1910, the hall was clad in Clark’s Patent Glazed Stoneware Hollow Building Blocks (Clark’s later amalgamated with Crown Lynn). It’s now the only surviving civic building in the country still wearing these beautifully shiny, ox blood-coloured blocks. Up close, they’re all different, both in colour and, as Site Manager Mauré McLeod tells us, size. “Because they’re handmade, they’re unique. They’ve all shrunk in the kiln in slightly different ways. You don’t see bricks like this anymore… but it’s been a bit hard to get a straight line,” he says somewhat ruefully. Architect Anthony Matthews had a clear idea of how he wanted the renovation to go. He’s been hugely sensitive to both era and social history, keeping for posterity such nods to previous users as the stenciled numbering on the narrow floorboards (recycled wherever possible) and leaving exposed early graffiti found inside the walls of the wings onstage. The original red folding chairs will also be recycled in the gallery upstairs. Junction 01 copy.pdf

When the hall was finished in 1911, the celebratory citizen’s ball held in it was the beginning of a busy social history. There were dances and weddings, meetings of the Philharmonic Society, civic banquets and, from 1913, regular films. World War One saw the community farewelling their troops and war efforts in the hall. World War Two was even busier: the Hauraki Regiment was stationed there and Warkworth was a base for American troops too. Dances, shows and films to entertain them were an everyday occurrence and a temporary hospital was also set up in a marquee next door. Judy Waters, 81, went to Warkworth Primary School which was then round the corner. As a little girl, she remembers making flower saucers for the annual flower show at the hall and rehearsing endlessly for the post-war victory concert. “You should have heard the car horns and

church bells when the war in the Pacific finished,” she remembers. The whole community headed for the hall to celebrate. As a teenager, she danced the Maxina, Valeta and Military Two-Step there. “We always had live music – it was just the local shopkeepers and community people who’d come along with their saxophones and trumpets, but it was wonderful,” she smiles. The Warkworth Town Hall was listed as a Category 1 Heritage building in 2007, being not only a rare example of hollow stoneware block construction in Australasia, but also of ‘great significance in the social history of Warkworth’. We can only imagine the laughter these old bricks have soaked up over the years. Kudos must go to the Warkworth Restoration Trust for their years of fundraising and meetings. Ilona Rogers, well-known performer and tireless chair of the group says: “When the doors of the Town Hall open again in 2017, social events will return as well as visiting artists. Already the music society has a program in place, and the Auckland Arts Festival and ballet companies are showing interest.” Junction congratulates the work of the Trust: more quality cultural venues can only be a good thing. Even better is remembering and honouring over a hundred years of those who have partied before us.
WARKWORTH TOWN HALL GRAND OPENING: FEBRUARY 25, 2017 There’ll be a full day of celebrations to open the new hall, beginning with a dawn service and powhiri. From 10am-3pm a revolving variety performance with local musicians, dancers and theatre. All welcome. Facebook: Warkworth Town Hall Restoration Project, for updates.

creative workshops in matakana 2017 WORDS

Jo Connor and friend Vivienne Kerr (below left + right) are beginning to get quite excited. Jo’s dream project, Matakana Creative, is well on its way to being realised in May next year. Inspired by Wanaka’s Autumn Art School which is coming into its 28th year, Jo decided that Matakana would be an ideal place to start something similar.
this summer. Because of their contacts, they’ve been able to muster an exceptional group of volunteers from the local community who all feel a sense of common ownership for the project, which is just how Jo likes it. There has already been some suggestions for 2018, but the pair joke that they mustn’t get ahead of themselves.
“This area has a very similar feel to Wanaka,” she says. “There’s an existing artistic community which is very inclusive; many people know it as a creative region. It’s close to Auckland, and has plenty of accommodation. There’s a fantastic infrastructure of food, wine and galleries – and a hugely supportive network of friends who are also keen to get this off the ground!”
So what’s available? The arts workshops will encompass: painting and drawing with Mandy Thomsett-Taylor, making a Windsor chair with Richard Hare (starting with a block of wood!), an eco-dyeing and felting textile workshop with Marion van Oeveren, writing fiction with Owen Marshall, a kiln-formed glass workshop with Liz Sharek, digital photography with David Wethey, flax weaving with Kahutoi Te Kanawa and sculpture with Jeff Thomson. All tutors are highly-qualified and, in many cases, multiple award-winning masters of their arts.
Matakana Creative will be a series of eight five-day, arts-based workshops and six one - or half-day events. The vision is that all participants will enjoy some social time together as well, so there’ll be some fringe activities such as artist talks, local walks, yoga, a shared meal at Brick Bay… and drinks each evening at Vintry in Matakana. There’ll also be specially priced dinners for participants at Matakana Market Kitchen, and lunches available to order. The week, which runs from May 8-12, will kick off with a welcome function at the Vivian Gallery from 5pm-8pm on Sunday May 7, sponsored by Bayleys Matakana.
Other events will comprise two half-day trips to Gibbs Farm which will include a delicious lunch. And there’ll be four celebrations of local food and wine cooked by exceptional chefs in some outstanding local homes: the Didsbury’s Big House at Brick Bay, Lauraine and Murray Jacobs’ Omaha beach house, Cathy Gould and Roger Donald’s Matakana home and at the Sawmill Brewery. Places for all of the above are very limited – around eight only for the workshops and fifteen for the lunches, so best to get in early if you’re interested! This is the beginning, hopefully, of something very good indeed.
Jo and Viv are both Aucklanders but are up here a lot – Viv is hoping to move up

When Elizabeth McClure first arrived in New Zealand, she was still just in her twenties. She had a post graduate degree in Glass Design from the Edinburgh College of Art and was fresh from Japan after three years teaching glass and working in design. Within a year of being here, she’d toured the country teaching glass techniques in every main city and was working at Sunbeam Glass in Ponsonby with some of the best glass artists in the southern hemisphere at that point in time: Ann Robinson, John Croucher and Gary Nash. Over the next years, Elizabeth was instrumental in developing the glass programme at the Canberra School of Art, where, as President of Ausglass, she convened their first ever international conference. But she’s mostly been in NZ ever since. Her lovely Scots accent is still there, though she’s pretty much an honorary Kiwi now. She’s won many prestigious awards over the years, and is known for her broad range of work – from small and exquisite perfume bottles to large-scale architectural work. A couple of years ago she moved from her home in Westmere to Matheson Bay. "The artist community in this area has been so welcoming and inclusive. It's been a great move into a new chapter in my career," she says. She’s now working out of a studio at Morris & James Pottery. Surrounded by other artists working with dangerous machinery and white-hot kilns, she’s in her happy place. After a coffee at the gorgeous new Brick & Vines café at Morris & James, Elizabeth takes me through to her studio to see some new work. She’s blown a range of fat round vessels with several different coloured layers of glass; these are her ‘blanks’. Now, as with most of her glass, the real work begins. First she sandblasts the surface, then applies laser-cut masking in rounded shapes (created for her by local designer Mark Lewington), then brushes on the glass enamels. The piece is fired and the process is repeated again and again. The effect is very similar to the image which

inspired it – the dappled shadows of leaves she noticed one day on the lounge-room wall in her new home. Ongoing work also includes the cut-glass effects that she’s wellknown for – blanks are incised, engraved and blasted with stone, diamond and sand to create highly considered patterns. Some are dotted with incredible precision, some criss-crossed with meticulous lines – this exposure of their layers of colour create beautiful depth.

Elizabeth has many more irons in the fire, however. “I’ve just got back from a teaching tour at three different universities in Tokyo,” she says, “and they’ve invited me back next year, too. I caught up with some of my students from years ago – I’d love to get some of them over here. I’m also curating a new display space for Morris & James… and Vicky Fanning and I are putting together a new glass show at the Vivian Gallery next year. 2017 is going to be busy!” Elizabeth’s work can be found at: www.thevivian.co.nz | www.fhegalleries.com OPEN STUDIO: Sunday 15th January 1pm–4pm Contact: e.mcclure.glass@gmail.com

review
summer book review Moonglow Michael Chabon
The Underground Railroad Colson Whitehead
Moonglow is the deathbed confession of a man that the narrator refers to only as ‘my grandfather’. It is a tale of madness, of war and adventure, of sex and marriage and desire but above all the destructive impact of keeping secrets and telling lies. Moonglow is a tour de force of speculative autobiography in which Chabon devises and reveals a secret history of his own imagination. A wonderful read.
Colson Whitehead takes the Underground Railroad — the loosely interlocking network activists who helped slaves escape to freedom in the decades before the Civil War — and turns it from a metaphor into an actual train that ferries fugitives northward. Cora, and Caesar take the perilous journey, state by state, heading to freedom. The result is a potent novel that leaves the reader with a devastating understanding of the terrible human costs of slavery.
Keeping On Keeping On Alan Bennett This is a treasure trove of wit, minutiae and musings on the life of one of Britain’s most celebrated writers. In the decade covered he saw the premieres of four of his works at the National Theatre and two on the big screen – The History Boys and The Lady in the Van. A well-written diary is a pleasure to dip in and out of and this book is perfect summer reading.
HUGH BRADING’S WARKWORTH GALLERY Hugh Brading is known around the world for his art, and as a teacher of painting. But his background ranges from being an A-grade mechanic to owning his own large-scale clothing manufacturing business – he never dreamed that the most satisfying career of his life would be as an artist. Hugh’s 81 now, and in great shape. Perhaps over two decades of an artistic lifestyle has kept him young? “I’m not really an artist,” Hugh happily admits. “I’m just a painter. I was taught over three days by a fantastic bloke called Randall Froude – he taught the nuts and bolts of making art rather than all that conceptual stuff – that’s just not me. He was very practical; it was all about technique. Well, that, and seeing the colours properly, which I think I could already do from working with fabrics for years.”
Hugh’s friends booked him on the course with Froude after his business collapsed during ‘Rogernomics’ in the late 1990s. At that point Hugh had three factories and 120 staff. He lost the lot and was searching for a new angle – he found it in painting. “We were driving home from the course, and I said to my wife ‘Joy, I reckon I can do this.’” Nearly twenty years later Hugh has sold over 1100 of his paintings worldwide with Joy’s invaluable support, and tutored workshops in many countries too.
“I just paint what people want,” says Hugh. “I’m pretty confident I can do just about anything these days. I painted nothing but flowers for years – my mother was an avid gardener and I learned a love of nature from her.” Their lush orchard is testament to that. “But if anyone
asked what inspires me I’d say – everything. I like people too – I have the gift of the gab, in case you haven’t noticed,” he grins.
Seascapes, poppies, barns and landscapes are the favourites – and the subjects of teaching DVDs Hugh also sells through his gallery. Pop in for a chat next time you’re passing through Warkworth – commissions are welcome, and you may just find something you’d love to take home with you. www.hughbrading.co.nz 160 Matakana Road, Warkworth

For the more adventurous older children we have the Four-inOne Bungy and Land Zorbs for $8.00 each ride. The dog club will perform a number of shows throughout the day, and there’ll be helicopter rides, quickfire raffles and live entertainment, including great local musicians. Matakana School Summer Ice Skating 5th-8th January 2017 This January, Matakana Primary is hosting the Ice Skate Tour – a 10mx16m portable artificial ‘ice’ rink that will be set up in the school hall. It’s a totally eco-friendly skating experience without getting cold and wet. It’s just $7 for kids, $13 for adults or $35 per family, and that includes your skates and helmet (they have EFTPOS onsite). All are welcome – you don’t have to have kids at the school! There’ll be a coffee van at the school from Friday to Sunday and for even more fun, they’ll have a bubble machine too. But best of all – it’s a fundraiser. The school receives 20% of all entry fees so the more fun you have, the more goes to the school! www.iceskatetour.co.nz | T: 021 390 510

The Puhoi Axemen have been going since 1962, but some members have been around for longer than that. The second Saturday in January has also become a Puhoi fixture – competitive wood-chopping on the lawn in front of the historic Puhoi Pub is a spectacle that everyone has to see at least once. There’ll be around 45 men, women, and boys competing this year, mostly from the North Island. Notably, there’ll be three generations of axemen from up north – a grandfather, father and son. Ron and Cleveland Cherry from Putaruru (another father and son team) are ones to watch, with Cleveland hoping to make the NZ U21 national team. The grandson of legendary axe-maker Eddie Fawcett will be in Puhoi this year too – Quentin Fawcett will be giving his all in his grandfather’s name, using a beautiful Tuatahi axe. Crowd-pleasing events include the underhand chop (standing on the block of wood as they chop), the tree event with jiggerboards (chopping cuts or ‘scarfs’ in which to insert the end of a board and using it to climb the post), axe-throwing and most exciting of all, team racing. Puhoi Axemen’s team of six will compete against other teams in a handicapped relay race to the finish that gets faster and faster as the crowd goes wild... a truly great way to spend a summer afternoon.

Here are three top tips to keep your impact low at a festival so you can let the good times (rock and) roll. • All that glitters… Glitter is made of miniscule pieces of plastic mixed with shiny metals like aluminium. This moves from your face, to the ocean, to a fish’s stomach. Try compostable alternatives (Auckland makeup specialists www. bodyfxshop.com will be stocking biodegradable glitter from early Jan); or don a sparkle-heavy costume to shine the night away. • Rave rave rave (on into the bin): Most glow sticks and bracelets end up split open and painted on sunburnt bodies (bad idea - major skin irritant). One hundred percent end up in landfill after just one night. Desperate to glow? Try UV body paint and remove before bed or going swimming (www.mish.co.nz). • Headdress stays home: Native American headdresses are trivialised every festival season. These garments (usually worn by men only) have huge spiritual significance. In some tribes every single feather represents an act of bravery. Cultural appreciation, wonderful; cultural appropriation, not.

The first Warkworth A&P Lifestyle Show was held in 1867, making it one of the oldest in the country. This year is the 150th show, and the committee has been working hard to pull together some exciting plans for an extra-special show – a huge celebration of our community. Saturday is the main show day, with competitive events covering horses, cattle, goats, sheep dogs, wood-chopping, calf club, cooking, horticulture, arts and crafts, painting, garden produce, needlework and a children’s section. This year we also have free kid’s amusements included with your ticket price. There’s a water-slide, a mega-slide, obstacle course, bouncy castles and a number of other sideshows for young and old. The wood-chopping is always popular; the local Puhoi Axemen will be competing hard against visiting teams. There’ll be lawn mower racing too this year: held in the rodeo ring on the Saturday, it should generate a fair bit of excitement. The sheep shearing competitors will be in hot pursuit of points and prizes, while the sheep racing is always a favourite with the kids. And if horses are your thing, this year’s special 150th Royal Equestrian Show will be spectacular, with competitors and judges coming from around NZ. On Sunday the Mahurangi Sports Collective are running a ‘Silly Buggers Challenge’ where 20 teams of four members will complete silly challenges against the clock – this will kick off at 1.30pm Trade displays have a number of new exhibitors. Plus there are vintage cars and collectables and the Auckland Stationary Engine Club with working machines (in conjunction with the Warkworth Museum), for historically-minded folk. It’s worth putting in your diary now: 150 years of the Warkworth A&P show! Sat 28 & Sun 29 January, 2017 www.warkworthaandpshow.com

The Mangawhai Bowl Jam skate event returns for February 5 2017 – Waitangi Weekend. Now cemented as one of New Zealand's biggest skateboarding events, it’s set to take over the world-class Mangawhai Bowl once again, with a line-up of the best skateboarders from around the country. The skate park at the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) will receive its final stage of upgrades in 2017. This will put it firmly on the map as the best in New Zealand – a training park for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This year they combine forces with the Loggerheads surf event (Feb 4). There’s also an official Bowl Jam after-party with feature bands Racing, THPS and Byron Bay-based Israeli Chicks. It is looking to be an exceptional weekend for skateboarders and spectators alike. Jesse Peters started the Mangawhai Bowl Jam six years ago. “My intention was to create a grassroots event that would allow a platform for local talent to grow,” he says. “Last year we had a crowd of 1000+. It’s exciting to see where it has got to! The challenge is to keep the core ethos of ‘by skateboarders, for skateboarders’ at the heart of the event. It’s all about bringing skateboarders together from across NZ to push each other – and have a damn fun time while doing so.” Insta: @bowldivision | Feb 5 | 11am start Free entry Divisions: U16, OPEN, Masters 40+

THE WINERY TOUR with bic runga WORDS
kathy

Her very recognisable voice on the other end of the phone is definitely a bit of a thrill. Bic Runga is one of New Zealand’s most loved and awarded musicians; her 2006 NZ Order of Merit, her induction into the NZ Music Hall of Fame in November 2016, and multiple platinum records are testament to that. But she’s also relaxed and chatty, with a good line in self-deprecating humour.
The two songs she wrote on the album are seriously good, recognisably hers. She’s feeling strong and in control of her future songwriting with Kody. The Legacy Award was a bit of a revelation – Dave Dobbyn presented it and the crowd gave her a standing ovation. “It took me by surprise,” says Bic. “I like to keep my expectations low, but it really exceeded them! It was quite emotional.”
Her third child, Frida, is now one year old. Bic’s been taking a family break since her last album, Belle, came out in 2011, but the announcement that she’d be receiving the 2016 Legacy Award spurred her towards creating something new. Really new: for someone who sees herself as a songwriter first and foremost, this album has only two of her own songs and ten covers. Close Your Eyes was made in an impressive six weeks with her husband Kody Nielsen, in the tiny studio in their back garden.
Final question: what’s on her car stereo right now? “Iggy Pop’s latest album, Post Pop Depression. It’s inspirational – he’s really started to let his poetry shine. My kids love it!” Bic Runga plays Ascension Vineyard with Brooke Fraser and Benny Tipene in the 10th Anniversary of the annual Winery Tour on February 4. Tickets from www.ascensionwine.co.nz/stor
“I’m actually so proud of this album,” she says. “We made it really fast because we could – I’m 40 now you know, old enough to be decisive and effective, and we’ve both made plenty of music. We just went for it.” The two of them played all the instruments on the album (Bic plays keyboards and drums as well as bass and guitar). But she found that singing other people’s songs was a lot harder than she thought it’d be. “It’s easy to be in your own comfort zone,” she admits, “but some songs I tried were way outside of mine.” There are some real anthems, including Roberta Flack’s The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Neil Young’s Only Love Can Break Your Heart. Bic says, “Normally I think the best way to handle covers is to totally reinvent them – I love José Gonzalez’s version of Kylie’s Hand on Your Heart for example. But sometimes a song is so strong that you just have to run with it, and these two were like that.”

New Zealand’s oldest walking weekend is in its 18th year this March, but the Mangawhai team is still discovering exciting new walks – 36 in total this year – as well as new activities and performers. Mangawhai is renowned for its beautiful beaches, coastal views and island-dotted Pacific vistas, and many of our walks enjoy these spectacular views. The bush-clad Brynderwyn hills provide a splendid backdrop, with their pristine streams, waterfalls and ancient trees. Between the bush and the ocean, Mangawhai has a vibrant farming, horticultural, wine-producing and artisan community, and many of the weekend events enable participants to talk to producers. Ten walks take place on private properties – one has a selection of great Blokes’ Sheds! Warm up for the weekend with the unique Troubadour Trail on Friday afternoon; this stroll around the beautiful Mangawhai estuary takes in five live performances in hidden gardens and estuary reserves. Saturday is the big walking day and along with the favourites such as the Mangawhai Cliff Top Walk, the Tanekaha Tracks, Tomarata Lakes, Waipu Coastal Track and Garden Spectacular, there are many new trails to walk and explore.
H O S KING
Following recent seismic events on the Kaikoura coast, you may wish to learn about our geological history on the Geology Walk – see how the rock formations of the Mangawhai embayment were created and continue to evolve. All walks are graded for difficulty and guided by knowledgeable locals, and there are many great tales to tell. On Saturday afternoon the Wine and Food Festival springs to life in the Olive Grove. Relax, catch up on the experiences of the day with friends, enjoy great local wines and beers and outstanding food, and dance till dusk to the music of Daughters of Ally. Sunday kicks off with the Walkers’ Big Breakfast – this brilliant buffet will set you up the day. Try a climb to the top of Bald Rock, a distinctive local landmark which offers spectacular views from Kaipara to Mangawhai. The Mangawhai Walking Weekend is always hugely popular, and numbers are limited, so book early and come walk with us in 2017! A BALI HIGH ON THE MATAKANA WATERFRONT
25 Ti Point Road, Ti Point Perched on the stunning cliff top of Ti Point, subtly screened from view by the mature Pohutakawa trees, sits this just completed grand Bali style home. Enjoying a high end finish throughout the three bedroom home, plus two guest rooms, there is nothing more to do but laze the day away pool side or take your travellator down to the foreshore. Stunning views over Mathesons Bay and out to Little Barrier Island are maximised at every turn and the covered wrap around verandas are reminiscent of relaxed island style living. Tropical and native plantings have been completed along with a substantial orchard area that will thrive and grow as you settle into your new lifestyle. Really want to escape the rat race? The two oversized water tanks, solar panels and a 15KWA generator plus fruit from the maturing orchard and the abundant supply of seafood from the shore below, allow off the grid living for complete seclusion if desired. A tiled heated pool with built-in outdoor kitchen, complete with BBQ, ice maker, fridge and surround sound will make it the place to be this summer. The prepared flat lawn allows plenty of room for the kids to explore. No expense has been spared in developing this waterfront masterpiece, easily rating as one of the most elegant homes our area has to offer. Call us today for the full information pack and to organise a time to view. Dahnie Burton P 021 628 327 B 09 425 7640 E dahnie.burton@bayleys.co.nz
