NEW & NOTED JUNCTION – NZ BEST REGIONAL MAGAZINE! THE MANGAWHAI MEMO A COMMUNITY WITHIN A COMMUNITY The Mangawhai Memo has been a staple in the community for over 40 years and is lovingly referred to by locals as the “Mangawhai Bible.” Words Leah Botherway

Both Kelly and Ngaire cannot speak highly enough of the “awesome group of people” who give their time and the tight-knit little community they’ve created at the Memo. This is made up of people from all walks of life and different ages and stages, which all have one thing in common: their love for the local area and the businesses and the people within it. Not letting a global pandemic get in their way, Kelly and her parents created a bubble in the first lockdown back in 2020 to ensure that everyone still got their local rag. With events cancelled and businesses unable to operate, instead of classifieds, the Memo was full of puzzles and crosswords to give people

an escape during uncertain times. Their support didn’t stop after the restrictions lifted, and the Memo provided free advertising to local businesses until they managed to get back on their feet. So much more than a local paper, the Mangawhai Memo is also a registered Charitable Trust with the Charities Commission, and every cent that is made goes back into the local community. Last year, the Memo donated approximately $10,000 in proceeds to local organisations such as Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ), the local Bowls Club, Ambulance Station, and many more. While the Summer months come and go, taking with them the masses of visitors and holidaymakers, the team at Mangawhai Memo know that what’s at the heart of this growing area is the locals and the businesses that make it such a wonderful place to live all year round. mangawhaimemo@gmail.com 021 034 1545

Ross is a professional rugby player and currently plays prop for the Northland Taniwha. He has also proudly worn jerseys for the Blues and the Māori All Blacks. It is hard to fathom that it wasn’t until his teenage years that he began throwing a rugby ball for Port Albert; before that, it was all about kicking a soccer ball around! During his final year at Rodney College, he wasn’t just juggling schoolwork and playing in the school’s first fifteen. He was also starting a successful career. Once rugby fever hit, Ross, like many other teenage New Zealand boys, wanted to become the best rugby player and play like the ones on TV. He holds fond memories of going to games in Whangarei with his uncle and other family members. He also vividly remembers watching the 1995 Rugby World Cup and yelling at the TV, as the legend Jonah Lomu ran rampant all over the field before scoring that incredible final try against England.

THE WRIGHT PATH Growing up in Wellsford, it didn’t matter what the sport was; Ross Wright and his siblings just wanted to play them all. Ross says that his younger years were full to the brim “playing tennis, soccer, touch, gymnastics – basically, if it was available in Wellsford, we played it.” Photos Northland Rugby

Ross knew it wasn't going to be easy to become a professional rugby player. If he wanted to succeed, he would have to work and constantly seek to improve his craft. There is training every day during the season; it is still four times a week in the offseason! He was also aware that sometimes things wouldn’t go his way and that he would be challenged constantly throughout his career, not just by people who didn’t believe in him but by having to be away from his family. But as he says, “When you love rugby as much as I do, you have to show up.” Luckily, sometimes things would go his way; one of those moments was in 2017, as he was selected for the Māori All Blacks, one of his most significant Rugby accomplishments. Ross says, “It was a team I wanted to make for a long time, and that first game, I just felt I had made it.” Ross played seven games between 2017-2020 with the Māori All Blacks. He travelled to Canada, France, Fiji, Brazil, Chile, and the USA to play his sport and represent New Zealand. During 2018 he also

managed a season in the Blues squad and played 12 games in the jersey. When Ross is not playing professional rugby, he is still drawn to the game, and you could find him on the sidelines wearing a Coach cap, as he coached his daughter’s Ripper Rugby team last year. Ross says that if his daughters wish to pursue a career in the sport, he will support them as there are many different pathways the game can take you. Or if they choose not to, then that is fine too. Either way, his advice stays the same; “if you really want to do it, you can’t listen to the people who say you can’t. Be resilient and keep your head down.” Ross has played every year for Northland since 2009 and is currently waiting to hear if he will represent them again this year. In 2020 he played his 100th game for Northland, which is one of his most significant achievements. He celebrated the milestone by running out onto the field with his two daughters, who were then three and five, which made the momentous occasion that little bit more special. www.taniwha.co.nz www.facebook.com/RugbyNorthland

RAISING WILDFLOWERS On top of a hill in rural Matakana live the Roberts family. They’re a colourful bunch and their property is no exception, complete with antique tractors, mechanical gardens, fairy signs, expansive views of Matakana and beyond and of course, beloved kunekune, ‘Tallulah.’ Photos Ses & Jen Captures

Mum Chloe is a passionate gardener and has spent the last four years growing specialty cut flowers in between caring for their young family. Chloe has always felt a close connection to nature but her passion for growing flowers started when she became a Mum and wanted a hobby that she could do alongside raising children. “I was hooked after I harvested my first bunch of sweet peas,” she says, “so I decided to dive right in and do the Floret Flower Farming Workshop, where I gained a wealth of knowledge on a small scale, high-intensity flower production.” Soon her flowers were overflowing into the hands of family and friends and people started asking to buy them. So in August last year, Raising Wildflowers was born. They’re a homeschooling family, so the name is as

much about three kids, Mia, Bodhi and Indigo, as it is about flowers. “We aim to demonstrate respect and appreciation for nature to the kids and the gardens provide many amazing learning opportunities. Every flower sold has been sown, picked and packaged with three sets of helping – or at times hindering, hands,” she laughs. The property is off the grid and relies on solar power and tank water, so husband Tom has set up a watering system from an elevated natural spring. Growing in an exposed location has provided a few challenges, though. “Whether it’s cyclone winds wiping out rows of flowers or pheasants eating the tulip bulbs, each growing season brings new learning curves and you just get more prepared for the next year.” Chloe chooses not to use chemicals in her garden, instead relying on well-prepared soil and regular feedings to grow the healthiest plants possible. She also releases beneficial insects to fight off pests and has fenced her garden beds to keep small animals out. Plans for the future include expanding the gardens, setting up tunnels and planting more shrubs and perennials. “At the moment, most of my time is spent on the kids, but I look forward to putting more energy into the business as our family grows – hopefully, one of them will get the gardening bug!” Chloe’s flowers are available to buy every Friday at the Matakana Butchery and the Point Wells General Store. info.raisingwildflowers@gmail.com www.instagram.com/raising.wildflowers. matakana/

MACADAMIA DREAMS Twenty years ago, Jan and Nick decided knowing nothing about horticulture was no reason not to pursue their dream of living in the country and establishing a “soil to sale” self-contained Macadamia nut business. They intended this to provide them with an active (and hopefully profitable) semi-retirement.

The omens were not good. Bored teenagers resented each trip north of Auckland, looking for the right plot of land. Real estate agents gave unhelpful answers to seemingly sensible questions, like “Is it North facing?” (Answer: “It faces whichever way you’re standing!”) A horticultural adviser looked Jan and Nick up and down and said, “Hmm…are you sure you’re cut out for this? Maybe lease a few acres in Point Wells and see how you like it before actually buying some land.” And the worst omen of all…the day they committed to purchasing bare paddocks

on Ridge Road, Scott’s Landing, was the same day Team New Zealand crashed out of the 2003 America’s Cup competition with a broken mast. Watched by all on the TV in the real estate agent’s office. Disregarding all the omens, Jan and Nick began planting trees in 2004. With the help of family and friends, they spent about three years planting 2,000 trees.

Around 1,000 shelterbelt trees were also planted, a mixture of natives and exotics. And so, the orchard that would be the heart of Mahurangi Macadamias had been planted. Part of Jan and Nick’s ethos was to keep their land free of pesticides and artificial fertilisers, and they have maintained this stance through the years.

Around 1,500 were their primary focus, Macadamia trees, but also avocados, lemons, limes, and some 100 spectacularly unsuccessful pine nut trees (producing a

begins in Autumn and continues through the Winter. Jan and Nick transform the macadamia kernel into delicious toasted and raw nut butter, and roasted macadamias infused with blends of herbs and spices. Many customers describe Jan’s macadamia brittle as the best they have ever tasted. The benefits of raw food and eat local trends are clear to all. Macadamias contain substantial amounts of iron, calcium, and vitamin B. Other nutrients in macadamias can improve brain health, such as oleic acid, palmitoleic acid, copper, vitamin B1, manganese, magnesium, and omega 9 fatty acids. Another important characteristic of macadamia oil is its high smoke point, which preserves the beneficial nutrients, great for baking and frying. Jan has been a regular at the Parnell market for 11 years and the Matakana market for two years, where their products are held in high regard. Has it been worth it? Looking out over the green trees, there is a quiet sense of achievement. mahurangi.macadamia@gmail.com www.instagram.com/mahurangi_ macadamias

BEE KIND Can you imagine living in a world with no apples, peaches, onions, avocados, kiwifruit, tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, broccoli, chocolate, coffee, mangos, and many more food items? Words Kate Moore

Over a third of all the foods, we consume rely on honeybees to exist, and it is a wellknown, painful fact that our bee population worldwide is in decline. This rapid downturn is due to reasons such as the Varroa mite, the overuse of commercial-grade pesticides in our gardens, and as the human population grows, bees’ natural habitats are being demolished to make way for more housing developments. It is not all doom and gloom, however, as there are ways to help combat this reduction of the striped gold and black insects, and you do not need to have acres of lawn or the greenest of fingers to help save this dwindling population. The quickest way to encourage bees to your garden is by planting bee-friendly plants. Luckily,

honeybees aren’t picky eaters; however, gardeners can do a few things to ensure the bees are at their happiest. The first thing is to plant varieties of flowers that produce plenty of nectar and sweet pollen all year round. To make your garden irresistible to honeybees, you should grow blooms in clusters of the same species and focus on plants with single flowers with flat and open shapes such as marigolds, pansies, and sunflowers rather than complicated ruffles of double or triple flowers. When choosing colours, it is beneficial to remember that honeybees cannot see the colour red and prefer orange, yellow, purple, blue, violet, and white. New Zealand natives such as NZ Jasmine, Pohutukawa, Rewarewa, and Manuka work double-time as not only are they are suited to the climate, but when not

in flower, their foliage offers shelter and protection for bees. Your garden should have a shallow water feature, like a birdbath or fountains with gently sloping edges to encourage bees to stop for a quick drink. As bees cannot swim, if there is already a water feature on the property, look at adding some flat rocks or pieces of driftwood to allow bees to rest and hydrate. Once you have a bee paradise up and running, it is essential to keep it that way and not spray pesticide. However, if there is an urgent reason to spray, please make sure that you use organic methods and spray in the evenings once the bees have gone to sleep. www.nzhoneytasting.co.nz

NEW FAMILY MARKET COMES TO TOWN So, it looks like there is a new market coming to town...the Warkworth Country Market!

The Warkworth Country Market is being held at the A&P Showgrounds, State Highway 1, on the fourth Sunday of the month. Finally, we get a groovy new market back in Warkworth and at the showgrounds to boot. We’re taking the whole family and the dog along. There’s fun rides and face painting for the kids, live music on two stages, and we hear there is a couple of street performers as well! Heaps of food on offer with food trucks and caravans from all over the place, and you can sit and eat while you check out one of the acts on stage. We had a look at their website which is very informative. It has all the info about the market, opening times and parking, and you can check out the vendors that are selling their wares by clicking on one of their photos which takes you directly to their home page.

It’s going to be like a massive carnival that springs up once a month at the A&P Showgrounds with everything you need right there. From clothing and jewellery to dog treats, outdoor furniture, plants and palms, artisan breads and pastries, steel garden art, smoked fish and cheese from around the world, homewares, firewood, and charcoal for your BBQ, ice creams for everyone…. wow the list goes on! So much to take in, and what a great day out.

A&P Showgrounds, Warkworth

Bring your friends and family, it starts at 9.30am and goes to 2pm. Go for some well-earned retail therapy, grab lunch, and take in some tunes and a street show while you're there. www.warkworthcountrymarket.co.nz

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR What a great month April is to reap the final rewards of your summer garden. Plants like aubergines and capsicums will still be producing well thanks to the mild autumn climate we enjoy in this region. Feijoas, guavas, and apples will be going strong, so it’s a fabulous time to use any fallen fruit or pest-damaged vegetables to make chutneys and jams to see you through until next summer. Words Geoff Ledbrook

BRASSICAS The Brassica family is a large one that provides many fine vegetables to grow in cooler months. The easiest ones to grow are kale and broccoli. Sprouting broccoli varieties are well worth considering for the home garden and will give a longer harvest of smaller heads. Stagger your plantings of cabbages or cauliflowers to ensure you have a steady supply. Plant good-sized broccoli seedlings 40 to 50cm apart. Allow more room for cauliflowers (50 to 80cm). Brassicas, unlike most seedlings, like to be planted into a firmer garden bed. If your soil is fluffy from recent cultivation, use your foot or hand to compress the soil at planting. Broccoli, cauliflowers and cabbages grow into big plants that will take up quite a bit of space in your garden. The time to maturity from transplant for broccoli is 8 to 12 weeks in winter, but this will vary according to the warmth of your site. Cauliflower and cabbage will take longer to grow and mature in 12 to 16 weeks from transplant. Brassicas are big feeders and need a rich

fertile, well-drained soil. Add lime to your brassica bed well before planting if your pH is below 6.0. Ideally, pH should be in the range of 6.0 to 7.0. This helps minimise a disease called clubroot and provides optimal growing conditions. Closer to planting, dig in mature compost or rotted manures if a fertility boost is needed. A good strategy is to plant brassicas in your rotation after a green manure crop like lupins. Lupins and other nitrogen fixers will enhance soil fertility naturally. As much as possible in your garden, keep a rotation that ensures you do not follow one brassica crop with another one. This helps reduce soil-borne diseases. Brassica crops will also respond well to a side dressing of compost, well-rotted manure or a liquid feed to the soil as they begin to mature. They like to grow vigorously. Lastly, a word on pests. The white butterfly will still be active in most gardens in the warm autumn weather. Your seedlings at transplant time will be very susceptible to being stripped by a hungry caterpillar. To keep the butterflies away, you can use a cloche with a light frost cloth type covering (not netting). Be sure to plant out big seedlings and keep a close

eye on them. Slugs and snails are also very fond of brassicas. They can be a problem at transplant and close to when the heads of broccoli and cauliflower develop. Good garden hygiene, dressing diatomaceous earth around each seedling, and leaving a piece of pipe or similar for snails to shelter in are all strategies you can use to manage these pests. With the shelter, you need to then remove the snails and kill them or feed them to chickens. As a last resort, you can use a low toxicity snail bait based on iron EDTA, like Tui Quash. This may be necessary at planting time.

DINNER WITHOUT THE HEADACHE Dinner on the table without the headache - sounds pretty good, right? Assortment is an online membership that makes eating well simple. Assortment provides you with a weekly menu, shopping list, and meal prep guide that helps you save time money and reduce food waste. You can shop local and adjust recipes based on your personal preferences. Nikki and Laura are the duo behind Assortment. Best friends since high school and now business partners, Nikki studied health science and is a certified personal trainer. She's spent the last 10 years traveling for modeling and working in the wellness industry. Laura studied marketing and holistic nutrition. Her work as a content marketer combines both passions through content creation and food photography. They both enjoy the beach and spending time in nature, which led Laura and her fiancé to make the move to Mangawhai, where they are in the process of building their first home. Nikki and Laura have always had a shared love for food, health, and wellness, but it wasn’t until Auckland’s first lockdown that Assortment was born. What began as a labour of love – planning dinners and shopping lists for friends and family, quickly turned into a business. After such positive feedback and realising that not everyone enjoyed the generic food box options available (and the amount of unnecessary waste), they couldn't wait to make their meal plans accessible for more people.

Three core values that sit at the heart of Assortment are sustainability, flexibility, and education. With many of us looking for ways to tread lighter on the planet, Assortment helps to bring sustainability into your kitchen. They carefully design the weekly menu to use all the produce purchased, so no food is wasted. They also donate $1.00 of each weekly membership fee to Fair Food, a food rescue charity collecting surplus food from retailers and manufacturers and redistributing it. Every dollar donated provides three meals for people in need. Shopping for yourself also gives you the

flexibility to shop at your favourite stores and local farmers' markets and support the brands you love. Being mindful that one size doesn't fit all, they provide variations for every recipe so that you can swap out ingredients based on your personal taste and preferences. As they say, “we all have to cook, so why not enjoy the process.” Their mission is to educate people along the way, teaching them new cooking skills to become intuitive and confident cooks. www.assortmentfoods.com www.instagram.com/assortment___

1 head of cauliflower (cut into florets)

3. While the veggies are roasting, cook the quinoa as per the packet instructions.

1 brown onion (cut into wedges) 3 large carrots (cut into rounds)

4. To make the sun-dried tomato pesto, simply combine all ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until combined but not completely smooth. You might need to adjust the amount of oil depending on the sun-dried tomatoes you use.

2-3 Tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper ½ cup red quinoa ¼ cup fresh coriander (finely chopped) 70g feta (crumbled) Sundried Tomato, Almond Pesto:

5. Once the quinoa has cooked, add it to a mixing bowl with half of the sun-dried tomato pesto and mix well.

¼ cup sundried tomatoes* 4 dried dates

¼ cup dry roasted almonds 4 Tbsp olive oil 3 Tbsp red wine vinegar 2 Tbsp water 1 garlic clove METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees fan bake. Add the cauliflower to one baking tray and the onions and carrots to another. Drizzle over the olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

6. Once the veggies have cooked, you can assemble the salad. Add half the quinoa to a large platter and then add some of the roasted vegetables, half the coriander, and feta; add another layer of quinoa and roasted vegetables. Dollop over the rest of the pesto and top with the remaining feta and coriander. *We prefer using sun-dried tomatoes that are sold dried versus the ones in oil, but if you choose to use the oilpacked ones, just make sure to drain them really well before adding to the blender, and you may need to use a little less olive oil.

LITTLE EATS NOW OPEN IN MANGAWHAI VILLAGE Little eats is a new lunch spot in Mangawhai Village with small-batch-made chunky gourmet sandwiches, made-to-order bagels, local cow shed pies, pork pies, wraps, a healthy range of kiwi drink alternatives, and some to die for treats. Photos Robinson Studios

Initially in the location of the Cakery, owner and operator Louisa recently rebranded the business after seeing a real need for more unique lunch options in the Mangawhai Village. As a result, they are continually changing up the selection daily from pastrami on rye to smoked chicken chipotle sandwiches. Growing up, owner Louisa spent a lot of time with her grandmother Ellie in the kitchen baking. Then, Louisa would go home and perfect the recipes. From 17, she had started travelling abroad and gained experience in the kitchen from Irish pubs, Jewish bakeries to a favourite of her’s cooking in the kitchen at an estate in Fife, Scotland, that has been running since 1670s. Louisa took a break from the kitchens of the world and focused on her main career in finance for 16 years. It wasn’t until moving to Mangawhai five years ago the passion came alive again, and she looked to opening up a business and sharing her love of feelgood foods. There are lots to look forward to in the future of the business. With only being open two months before the first round of covid landed on our shores, Louisa is determined to succeed, ride this wave and to continue to bring you delish lunch options in Mangawhai. 027 534 7983 1A Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai

PEACEFUL PODS Julia and Jared Armitage are no strangers to the building scene. Together they have built five houses and completely renovated another two. Words Kate Moore

After selling their beachfront property next to the surf club, they wanted to remain part of the bustling community that Managwhai is renowned for. They kept their eyes open, and when 12 acres became available 10 minutes down the road, they leapt at the chance. The original brief was to build a simple, barn-style cedar house for Julia’s parents to live in. What has resulted is not just the planned dwelling but an additional five 65 square foot pods with another five smaller pods, specifically for couples, already in the design stage. The Ridge Pods came from a gap in the market of affordable, highend accommodation that was not available for the various tradies to stay in during the barn construction process. They are now available to rent out either individually or as a group. Jared designed the Pods to blend in with their bush-clad surroundings. He worked closely with Zane from Zeal Builders to ensure that they used slightly outside-thebox materials, such as cold room panels from Metal Craft coated in Flaxpod. While each Pod is private, thanks to planter boxes, they have also completed extensive planting on the site to blend in even more in the future. Each Pod has been designed to feel like a haven from the real world and allows guests to “be a part of the vibrant crowds in summer but then retreat to the pods and have your own space, to just sit and listen to the tuis.” The Pods offer a laid-back, comfortable escape with luxurious touches to create a magical holiday feel. The open plan downstairs houses a lounge, a kitchenette, a king-sized bed draped in quality linen from Citta and a tranquil bathroom. Upstairs on the mezzanine floor, two single beds can be pushed together to cater to all groups, not just families. “Having a comfy outdoor space was a high priority,” Julia says. The brief has undoubtedly been met with bifold doors flowing through to a large outside deck. You are greeted with soft outdoor furniture to sink into, an umbrella, a weber BBQ, and an endless wide-open sky.

SOLAR MADE SIMPLE In these uncertain times, it is no surprise that people want to go off the grid. So along with creating a vegetable patch and stocking up on pantry staples like flour, toilet paper (and let’s face it a few bottles of wine and Island Gin), a solar system is the most important thing to tick off on your self-sustainable checklist.

Which system is best and where do you start? Tim from Solarcraft says which system you need “all comes down to your power usage and how self-sustainable you want to be.” While some people are happy to reduce their carbon footprint, others want to eliminate their power bill altogether. To help start you off on your solar power journey, local solar experts – Solarcraft have put together common questions their clients ask about solar: How does a solar system work?

Solar panels mounted on your roof or on a ground mount convert sunlight into electricity. An inverter then converts the energy to use in your home. Any excess energy is then stored in a hybrid energy system or fed back to the grid for a credit on your power bill. What is the difference between Off-Grid, GridTied and Hybrid systems? Off-grid is completely detached from the utility grid, meaning you are completely selfsufficient, using your own solar and energy storage throughout the year. Grid-Tied solar is connected in tandem with your mains power supply to help offset your energy use during daylight hours. Hybrid systems

are an extension of your Grid-Tied solar system to include some energy storage to last overnight and provide essential supply during power outage. What does a solar system cost?

feature on any home, so when it comes to how a solar system will look, it is important. Thankfully Solarcraft offer a range of solar panels and systems to match the aesthetic you are after.

Over the last two years, due to demand and focus on renewable energy, solar panels have dropped in price by up to 70 percent from near $4.00 per watt to 70cents per watt - making them much more affordable. The exact cost for a solar system will depend on your current power usage and what you want your solar system to run. Solarcraft work this out with you so you are fully informed of the system and its benefits.

Should I invest in solar power for my business?

When am I going to see a return on investment for my solar system?

Absolutely. Solarcraft only install quality equipment that is backed up by rock solid warranties. They use quality solar modules with a workmanship warranty of up to 40 years and are warranted to provide at least 87 percent of their rated output at standard conditions for a minimum of 25 years.

This can be as low as five years depending on how self-sufficient you want to be and how you use your energy throughout the day. Any power used directly from solar gives the best return. I’m worried about how solar panels will look on my roof…

Anyone who says they aren’t concerned about how a solar system will look on their roof is lying. A solar system is a major selling

Yes. Setting aside the practical sense it makes to invest in a solar system; solar power will positively impact your bottom line. Not only will it reduce overheads, solar is a fantastic way to meet your company’s sustainability goals and walk the talk with your company’s environmental values. Does a solar system come with a warranty?

Do you still have questions? For an in-depth chat about how solar will work for you, contact Tim and the team. info@solarcraft.co.nz www.solarcraft.co.nz

TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE After two successful years opening her gallery during the Mahurangi artist's trail, Rosemary Rowe has enjoyed opening her gallery to the public, showcasing a collection of her incredible oil paintings.

Rosemary hails from England, spending her youth in Cornwall. Pencil in hand, she loved drawing local landscapes, beaches, rolling hills, and moors on whatever she could find - newspapers, backs of photos, wallpaper, walls, anything she could take a pencil to. Rosemary emigrated to New Zealand in her mid-20s with her two young sons in tow. As art has never been a very lucrative area, Rosemary spent a lot of her working years supporting high schools on the coast and teaching adult and youth Ballroom, Latin, and Rock ‘n’ Roll dance classes. But it wasn’t long before she rediscovered her creative side and settled in Warkworth, where she is enjoying a well-deserved retirement. Once the art passion re-ignited, she hasn’t looked back! HARVESTING A VISION FOR A WORLDCLASS TRAIL NETWORK This Autumn is a pivotal time for the Matakana Coast Trail Trust as years of planning and hard graft come to fruition. Growth has been organic and grassroots. Now, new Co-Chairs Aidan Bennett and Craig Donaldson are progressing the Trust’s founding vision to create a multi-purpose trail network in Rodney. Words Sarah Thornton

Connecting people and places are foremost for Aidan and Craig as they work creatively to get spades in the ground. Overseeing the development of a world-class trail network will secure public access to a lush area of outstanding natural beauty. Once realised, there will be a multitude of benefits for locals and the wider community – from safer journeys and economic prosperity to environmental and health enhancements. ‘Having a holiday home at Mangawhai and getting involved in this exciting project was a no-brainer,’ says Donaldson. ‘A trail which will eventually link up Mangawhai via the new residential areas and golf courses at Tara Iti and Te Arai, as well as Pakiri, Leigh, Matakana, Snells Beach, Warkworth, and

Puhoi, will be one of the best in the country. Once the entire trail is built, the cost benefits over 10 years are estimated at over $1 billion, so there will be many winners. Founding Trust Chair and Pt Wells local Allison Roe sees Bennett and Donaldson as high-calibre additions to the Trust. ‘The leadership skills and business acumen they bring to the table will carry on the hard work of the original trustees and take their vision into the future. Seeking funding will also be critical,’ says Roe. ‘I have known Allison for a long time, so I was thrilled when she asked me to get involved,’ says Bennett. ‘I have done most of New Zealand’s popular trails and e-bike tours overseas and believe ours has the

potential to be as good, if not better, than any of them. Once built, the trail will provide benefits for many sectors of the community.’ Right now, the focus is on fundraising for the development of Stage 1 of the trail, which will connect Warkworth, Snells Beach, and Matakana. Once realised, it will provide safe walking and cycling options for commuters, school children, ‘weekend warriors,’ and tourists alike. The estimated cost of construction for Stage 1 has been put at $13.7 million, which upon completion will generate an estimated $93 million per year in economic and health benefits. www.mctt.org.nz www.facebook.com/ TheMatakanaCoastTrailTrust

WARKWORTH ANNUAL COSPLAY PICNIC While the word ‘Cosplay’ may have become more common in recent decades, the idea of dressing up as other characters is far from a new concept. From the masquerade balls in medieval times to children wandering around their neighbourhood dressed as witches and pumpkins at Halloween, costume play has been around for centuries. Words Leah Botherway

Sethiroth Thackeray (Shinra) is the person behind the Warkworth Annual Cosplay Picnic and describes Cosplay as “donning the attire and personality of a character you have expressed an affiliation with.” Shinra holds this event to allow attendees to show off their handiwork, network, and socialise with others who share similar passions and fandom. Not just a chance to mingle with likeminded people, this annual event is the perfect opportunity for enthusiasts to have photos taken of themselves in their costumes. For hobby photographer Shinra, the Cement Works, along with a couple of other picturesque spots nearby, provide

the perfect backdrop for him and his fellow Cosplayers to take photos of each other dressed as their characters. Shinra first became interested in Cosplay over 30 years ago - as a shy young boy, he would love to take on the characteristics of different people that inspired him. “You can take on the best of what you see and throw away the negative,” says Shinra. Over the past 30 years, Shinra has created and portrayed over 100 characters and has attended different events around the country. When you see the intricate detail of some of the costumes, it soon becomes evident that Cosplay is far from the cheapest of hobbies. In fact, there’s even an unwritten rule that

you never ask someone what they spent on their costume! Whilst there is the option to purchase costumes off the rack (and no shame in doing so), most Cosplayers take pride in creating their wares from scratch and have become pretty nifty with hot glue and needle and thread. The Park is located on a six-hectare block on the east coast of Ti Point overlooking the beautiful Hauraki Gulf, Little Barrier and Coromandel. The setting is regenerating native bush that has been nurtured for the past 55 years.

SHEEPWORLD IS A SMALL WORKING FARM WITH A BIG HEART

Amidst the animal enclosures and the beautiful native bush, Springboard is transforming Sheepworld into a youth development site and a Farm Park.

One hundred percent of Sheepworld’s profits go to helping young people who have lost their way, or have had a hard start in life.

Springboard believes that all young people deserve a fair start in life and an equal opportunity to succeed. The local community plays a big part in achieving this. Springboard’s hope is that locals and tourists choose Sheepworld as a stop-over and a destination. Come and spend time in the beautiful farm and bush surroundings. Learn about New Zealand farming, feed the animals, or simply relax in the bright breezy café while the kids run on the lawn - children love the aviary and playground. Enjoy having a coffee, making friends with an alpaca, or buying a t-shirt, knowing you are making a difference to a young person’s life. Follow Sheepworld on Facebook and Instagram for updates on bottle-feeding lambs and other farm events. www.sheepworld.co.nz www.springboard.org.nz

“A SEA OF CHANGE” 15-25 April 2022 Charlie’s,17 Sharp Road, Matakana In this world of constant emergency, ambiguity and complex change. What do we need to wake us up from the fear of the uncertainty presented to us right now? Perhaps it's just the little things, the everyday and ordinary, that remind us of what we know and gives us a sense that all is okay in the world. It grounds us, even if we have seen it a million times. Oil on Paper, prints available. www.jules@julessilk.com | 021 211 2829
