WARKWORTH DROP OFF POINT FOR I GOT YOUR BACK PACK When people escape from domestic abuse situations, they often have little more than the clothing on their backs. The Debtfix Crew often hears about the financial fallout for these vulnerable people and now they are doing their bit, and calling on the community to support ‘I Got Your Back Pack’. The charity collects new essential items such as toothpaste, shampoo, children’s books, nappies, deodorant for men or women etc. that are given to people to help them through the crisis. Donations can be dropped off to their Warkworth premises during office hours. Debtfix, Unit F/11 Neville Street, Warkworth | www.debtfix.co.nz

COMPOST SERVICE TO CONTINUE IN MANGAWHAI

GET BEAUTIFEYED

Sustainable Kaipara are happy to announce their continued compost service in Mangawhai, and would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to those that joined the trial. This six month compost trial proved to be an essential testing ground and provided valuable data to help refine the service and to look at expansion across the Kaipara region. This six month compost service diverted a whopping 3,706kgs of food scraps from landfill and turned it into two cubic metres of compost. This has fed the community garden which in turn has provided beautiful fresh vegetables for those in need locally. It’s also contributed to part-time employment locally and lowered carbon footprints.

uses in her performances to this day. In 2008 Anitra moved to Auckland, where she studied a Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts at Unitec, specialising in contemporary dance, followed by three years working as a freelance dancer, performing in shows across Australasia. After finishing her Post-Graduate Diploma in Teaching specialising in dance and drama in 2015, Anitra moved to London. She spent the next year teaching dance and drama whilst upskilling, auditioning and dancing in shows across Europe. However, it wasn’t until Anitra successfully auditioned to dance at Bollywood’s Filmfare Awards in Mumbai that life took an unexpected turn. Anitra fell in love with everything about India – the food, the people, the culture and, of course, the dancing. So, once she arrived back in London, she set about finding an agent in India and from there landed two sixmonth dancing contracts.

A MUSICAL POWERHOUSE

After arriving back in Mumbai, Anitra was dancing in live shows, Bollywood movies, television ads and even danced at Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s wedding. Her biggest ‘pinch me’ moment came when she was selected to dance in Will Smith’s Bucket List documentary.

Growing up in a music-filled home in Matakana, Anitra Hayday spent her days singing, dancing and playing an array of instruments alongside her talented family. Fast forward a couple of decades, Anitra is now a professional dancer, musician and international DJ playing at festivals and shows worldwide.

It wasn’t until after a conversation with a talent scout that Anitra decided to try her hand at DJing. Whilst back in New Zealand in 2019 to dance and model in the World of Wearable Arts in Wellington, Anitra taught herself to DJ, so when she returned to India, she could hit the ground running.

Words Leah Botherway

For those of us who were lucky enough

to grow up in the Matakana region in the 80s and 90s, the surname ‘Hayday’ is

synonymous with music. Anitra’s mother, Susan Hayday, has taught singing and

piano to children and adults for decades

and conducted the local choir, Matakantata. Her late father, John Hayday, was a music

teacher and was considered a legend in the New Zealand folk scene. And if that wasn’t

impressive enough, Anitra’s older brother James is a BAFTA-winning sound designer based between London and Auckland. Ever since she was a little girl, Anitra loved to perform – she spent her time dancing and singing and took part in musical theatre shows at Centre Stage in Orewa. Along with performing on stage, Anitra also played the guitar, flute, piano and drums, all skills that she’s continued to hone over the years and

Once Anitra returned to Mumbai at the end of 2019 with her newfound talent, she was booked and busy. She was the opening act at Goa’s largest reggae and dancehall festival, Sunsplash, playing some of India’s largest rooftop bars and clubs along with celebrity weddings and fashion launches, all the while continuing to dance in Bollywood during the day. When 2020 rolled around, Anitra was DJing at

festivals across India and was set to travel to Qatar - then COVID hit and, as borders shut around the world, the trip to Qatar turned into a one-way flight to Auckland. Anitra spent the lockdown with her mum Susan in Matakana whilst continuing to entertain her fans online. With a live audience of one and an online audience of thousands, Anitra danced, sang, and DJ’d at online festivals and via her Instagram page. With all the live performances and festivals being cancelled, Anitra began teaching dance and choreography in secondary schools and working with teachers around the country as part of their professional development. Whilst patiently waiting for restrictions to ease around the world, Anitra has temporarily set up camp in Melbourne. Returning to her dance and performing arts roots, Anitra is working in education in Melbourne, where she assists dance and drama specialists to upskill and find work. Whilst Matakana will always be home, and Melbourne is where she’s currently based, once everything settles down and the world is back to ‘normal’, Anitra can’t wait to get back to Mumbai and pick things up where she left off. www.instagram.com/anitra.xx

GROWING FROM THE TREE OF LIFE Josh Rothwell is certified in horticulture and has worked as an arborist for almost a decade. Together with his wife Vicki, they ran their own local business for several years. In their experience with horticulture, they felt limited when it came to eco-friendly, sustainable, and effective gardening products.

Josh had an accident early last year which put him out of work in arboriculture, with the effects of the Covid pandemic further delaying his recovery and future ability to work in the trade. Luckily, they had been working on a new idea for the last few years and the plan to launch their new product Groconut® became their new focus. Their idea originally sprouted from the humble coconut. Commonly referred to as the “Tree of Life”, its benefits are constantly being talked about, but rarely from a horticultural point of view. This got Josh and Vicki thinking – “If a new plant shoot must break through this tough coconut shell without any help from the outside, surely the water inside must have some incredible properties that we can use to help boost growth of other plants, too”. After doing their research, they discovered compelling data on coconut water and plant development. Case studies show that total

leaf mass is almost doubled, and root mass is nearly tripled when coconut water is used. It also helps with plant resilience in times of drought and drastically increases nutrient uptake. These studies prove its efficacy on a range of plant types - from fruiting plants like tomatoes, to indoor plants like orchids, to outdoor ornamentals like periwinkles. The catch is that these studies used coconut water that was sourced from a fresh, green coconut – something that is impossible to source in New Zealand. Josh and Vicki wanted in on this natural growth booster, too! They discovered that, to be used effectively in horticulture, coconut water must be harvested and processed in a unique way that keeps the phytohormones intact. This is much less convenient than bottling or spray-drying. After talking to different coconut plantations and processing facilities about harvesting coconuts in a way that keeps this biological integrity, they trialled their different coconut waters to get to

their patent-pending formula, and Groconut’s Horticultural Coconut Water was born! Like most new ideas, Groconut also came with minor teething obstacles to overcome. Although their patent-pending formula is highly effective, the ingredients are very moisture absorbing – so finding moistureproof packaging that is also eco-friendly has been a priority. They are currently trialling several prototypes with a plan to introduce a new eco-friendly, reusable packaging over the coming months. They are also looking into sourcing from plantations in local islands like Fiji and Samoa, to bring the growing and processing even closer to home. For both Josh and Vicki, discovering a product that reduces the need for chemical fertilizers comes with relief and excitement! You can follow them on Instagram @groconut or visit their website for more information. www.groconut.com hello@groconut.com

COLOUR POP Based in Snells Beach, local artist Petrina Jose’s interest in colour and composition began as a child, when she would spend hours drawing illustrations and decorating the pages of school projects with colourful borders and lettering. Photos Dominey Flores

This interest led her to pursue a career in graphic design, where she went on to work as an art director and creative director for some of New Zealand’s most popular lifestyle magazines and brands. While working fulltime, she would spend her evenings and weekends creating, dabbling in other art forms such as photography, pottery and jewellery design. She always had a project on the go, experimenting with different creative outlets in the search for one that would ignite her soul.

Petrina then launched her own boutique design business, helping small businesses with their branding and creative direction which provided more freedom to pursue her other creative endeavours. Petrina was originally drawn to painting as a form of therapy, losing herself in each brushstroke. Now, painting has become her true passion – she thrives on the ability to express ideas and emotion on canvas and finds the creation process invigorating. She is never far from her brushes, creating unique works of art in between raising two children. The self-taught artist has enjoyed developing her own style and artistic identity which draws on the skills she gained as a graphic designer. She enjoys experimenting with vibrant and playful colour combinations and is inspired by her surroundings – the shapes, colours and textures she finds in nature, and the composition of landscapes, buildings and interiors. Petrina also takes inspiration from watching her two children create artwork, emulating their free, uninhibited nature which results in her work taking on a playful and cheerful quality. Colour mixing and playing with different colour palettes is her most loved aspect, using shapes and composition to create pieces of art that express an emotion, mood or state of mind. Each painting is different, layering shapes, textures and graphic symbols to create abstract pieces that push the boundaries of colour combinations. Petrina paints with acrylic on canvas and enjoys the flexibility of the medium, as well as its ability to create a bold and vibrant finish. She is also in the process of developing a digitally created collection of prints. For more information or to enquire about commissions, visit her website or find her on Instagram and Facebook. www.petrinajart.com www.instagram.com@petrina.j_art

CREATING YOUR OWN ART At a rural lifestyle block nestled in the Upper Waiwera valley, just 12 minutes’ drive from the northern motorway off-ramp at Millwater, art, in all its forms, plays an important role for owners Alasdair and Fiona Scott.

Their herbal display garden is certainly artistic in its design and is part of their herbal workshop offerings where guests get to make their own herbal creations like moisturising creams, insect repellent and the popular antiitch creams using herbal ingredients. But more recently, finished art is in the hands of those who book their popular soft stone sculpting workshops – in fact over 300 people have created their own garden art with this

form of sculpting in the past year alone. Alasdair has the task of rising at 2am to mix the blocks – a combination of sand, cement, vermiculite and water which is then put into moulds to set for the workshop start time of 11am. By this stage the blocks have hardened to the consistency of wet sand and can be sculpted with simple tools. There are plenty of examples for sculptors to use as inspiration as well as the native bush that surrounds their all-weather Studio. By the workshop finish time of 3pm, the sculptures are hardened enough to take home and are ready to be positioned in their new home, garden or deck. At this stage, the blocks are as hard as concrete, weather extremely well and are a unique piece of art created during a fun and entertaining day. “Our objective is to exceed people’s expectations,” says Alasdair of their workshops. “With a beautiful environment, delicious lunch and the knowledge that with a few simple tools, you can create a beautiful piece of art, we are constantly reminded of how we hit that mark.” A popular twist to the workshops is corporate

team-building events where groups can deal with business issues in the morning and culminate with a sculpting workshop in the afternoon. “We run sculpting workshops during most weekends but are also available to run private groups during the week”, says Fiona, noting that now is a perfect time to reward staff for their efforts during a difficult year. The couple have quite diverse backgrounds. Alasdair spent over 25 years working in a corporate environment running a successful financial planning company until he retired from the rigours of the workplace, while Fiona has been an art teacher at a local intermediate school for over 20 years. Their combined skills perfectly align to give you an exceptional experience for a very reasonable price. Workshops cost $90 per person, plus GST, and include the pre-cast blocks, tuition and assistance, lunch, refreshments and all tools necessary to sculpt your own masterpiece. BEAUTY THROUGH STRUCTURE AND FORM Welfe Bowyer is a contemporary jewellery artist based in Mahurangi East. Born in Wales and relocating to Aotearoa at the age of eight, he graduated from the Victoria School of Architecture in Wellington, in 2005. An award-winning student, Welfe has always been interested in designing threedimensional forms, particularly physical modelling and construction detail design. When he relocated to Melbourne, he began experimenting with jewellery while working in Architecture. Predominantly self-taught, in combination with skills courses at Melbourne Polytechnic, contemporary jewellery allowed him the perfect medium with which to conceptualise, experiment and create on a different scale to architecture. Bowyer regularly exhibits his work at galleries

throughout Aotearoa and Australia, and most recently was a finalist for the Mari Funaki Award 2018 with his series ‘2C’/Twice Cast, a series of rings that experimented with casting multiple metals together in one piece. Welfe also works directly with clients to create commissions for those special occasions such as engagements, weddings and anniversaries. He loves the collaborative nature of these projects with the aim to create the perfect piece of jewellery that speaks to their personality and their individual values. During Bowyer's time in Australia, he worked with local small scale miners and gem cutters to find ethically sourced sapphires and diamonds from around Australia. He now carries with him an

extensive knowledge of natural gemstones in some very unique colours. These beautiful cut stones in combination with Bowyer's well known textures create an intriguing dialogue for the wearer. “I like to create hand-made textures with common alloys of Bronze, Silver and Gold and combine them in unique ways, often using found objects and playing on the strengths of one material over another to create a language that speaks of time, erosion, memory and how pieces might evolve in the future as they are worn.” You can follow him on Instagram @welfe or visit his website for more information. www.welfebowyer.com hello@welfe.com

A TEXTILE HAVEN Ngaire Montgomery-Williams has always been interested in textiles for as long as she can remember. Some of her first memories are of making dolls clothes for her dolls with her mothers help then making clothing for herself. She did a quilt course with her Mum in 1994 and after that friends became interested in learning how to make quilts. She started teaching them and then they wanted the fabrics, so she thought “Why not open a fabric shop?” in Kaiwaka? Ngaire and Paul, along with Debbie and Danny Farr started The Apple Basket in September 1998 after they bought an antique shop situated in Kaiwak. As they sold antiques they replaced them with fabric. In the coming years Debbie and Danny had moved to the Waikato which left the business in Ngaire and Paul's hands. Now the shop is full to the brim with the most beautiful fabrics, knitting yarn, embroidery threads, patterns, books, kits, notions, haberdashery and everything to do with textiles, including selling Pfaff sewing machines and Babylock Overlockers and Coverlock machines. Their staff, Caron, Claire and Corrinaare, are wonderful women with lots of knowledge of the textile industry, so there is always someone there to help with any questions or sewing/knitting problems. Ngaire and daughter Tegan design their own patterns (that are exclusive to The Apple Basket) for quilts, bags, embroidered items and make up the kits to include what you’ll need to make the item. Classes and groups are available at The Apple Basket and they have a Hand Embroidery group and a Knit Clinic, where customers can come along with their projects or choose a project from the shop and sit with like-minded people and stitch or knit - fantastic for people wanting to learn more about the craft. Mondays are the ‘Stitch and Chat’ days and customers can bring along a project or choose one from the shop and learn how to make it. The Saturday ‘Catch Up Chics’ (the first Saturday of every month)

The Apple Basket is a textile store that sells 100% cotton and linen fabrics, yarn (wool, alpaca, possum, linen and cotton yarns), embroidery threads and haberdashery. I run classes quilting/ patchwork, hand embroidery, dress making, textile gift card making, bag making, knitting, Pfaff sewing machine classes on site and we have a website with most items in the online store.

SEASONAL PERFECTION: MORRIS & JAMES’ AUTUMN RANGE At Morris & James, the clay making process can be followed from its very beginning, as raw earth through to beautifully finished ceramics.

With the clay harvested on-site from the high terraced banks of the Matakana river, everyone who buys a Morris & James piece is literally taking a little piece of this special place home with them. Each year, the freshly-dug raw clay is spread out over a dedicated ‘clayfield’ behind the Pottery, where it is left exposed to the elements to weather naturally for 12 months. After being dried by sun and wind, it is collected at the end of summer, making way for the next batch so the cycle can begin again. The weathered clay is piled high indoors and ground into a fine powder so that it can be mixed with pure black sand. Matakana clay is

slow-drying and can shrink considerably, so the black sand is added to counteract these characteristics, resulting in less cracking, stronger ceramics, and a high quality finished product. It also adds a richer, darker tone to the terracotta clay. This powdered mix is then combined with water to recreate wet clay, and stacked into small blocks ready for throwing. It’s then the job of head potter Ian Foote and his team to expertly transform the fresh clay into any one of the myriad pot shapes and sizes that Morris & James produce, a rather magical and hypnotic process to watch as the pots morph into being on the fastspinning potters’ wheels. The newly thrown pots are transported through to the balmy temperature-controlled Summer Room (also

a popular spot with the M&J staff for morning tea during winter!), where they spend a slow month drying out in preparation for firing. The first high-temperature kiln firing that the pots go through is called bisque firing. Here, they are transformed by extreme 1025°C heat into richly coloured terracotta - literally translated as ‘baked earth’. For some, they’ll remain and be sold as raw terracotta; others will continue on to the glazing and handdecorating stations before undergoing a second glaze firing, emerging as the vibrantly coloured and detailed pots that you can admire in the showroom. www.morrisandjames.co.nz 09 422 7116

EXPLORING MALOSI AS SOUL-STRENGTH IOANE IOANE Included in new installations on the sculpture trail this autumn, Brick Bay is proud to present two beautifully carved totara forms, titled ‘Malosi’ and ‘Malosi - Jewels’. They are the work of distinguished artist Ioane Ioane, whose practice encompasses sculpture, painting, installation and ritual performance. Originally from Samoa and now based in Auckland, Ioane’s family moved to New Zealand when he was six years old. Recalling this journey across space and time, Ioane’s art is firmly rooted in Samoan culture, often acknowledging the spiritual and transitional nature of ‘va’, a rich Samoan concept meaning ‘space between’. The va is a place of affirmation, the spiritual space between two cultures, between people and the environment, connections between past and present. He describes this space as one of transformation, one of birth and becoming, adding, "Sacred spaces are not necessarily a church, but it's a place where one likes to be...a place of affirmation.”

Ioane talks of returning to his birthplace of Samoa after a 50 year absence; “coming back to my roots, practising the language, connecting with my ancestors and family back there had a profound impact on me.” He realised why he had always been drawn to maritime projects, with a profound connection to the ocean. Ioane’s 2002 installation at the Auckland City Art Gallery, Fale Sa, included 500 carved cowry shells and three wooden totems, shown with a watery audio-lightscape. The sculptures at Brick Bay, both titled Malosi (Samoan for strength) evolve from this work. Cowry shells are of great importance in many cultures as currency, decoration and a symbol of strength, usually interpreted as male strength. But here, Ioane celebrates malosi as the strength of women from childhood through maturity to old age. Ioane notes, “‘Malosi’ is most often seen, or portrayed, as the physicality of the male…[but] the reality of soul-strength lies predominantly in women. If men are

receptive, they too can find the strength of their women ancestors - the woman-spirit in all. Why else would nature be ‘Mother’?” Ioane has a deep appreciation for women, describing himself as “3,055 years old - an extension of my mother, my grandmother, my great-grandmother, my community and my nation.” The coiled energy and calm presence of the carved totara forms, positioned beside the watery expanse of the lake, are grounded in the artist’s past, providing viewers an opportunity to contemplate the possibility of their own transformation and growth. Visitors are invited to explore Ioane’s sculptures on the sculpture trail, which is open every day. The trail includes more than 60 artworks, featuring new work by Hannah Valentine, Terry Stringer, Ben Foster and Jeff Thomson. More information can be found on the Brick Bay website. www.brickbaysculpture.co.nz

UP YOUR FASHION GAME AND DRESS RESPONSIBLY Stylist and 'op shop' don't often go together in one sentence - but one stylist is proving they can and do!

There is a growing ‘op shopping’ trend, but many women struggle to pull off a ‘look’ successfully because they don’t know how to pair or style the items. Bree Thompson of 'Second Life Studio' in Warkworth opened last year and has been booked consistently ever since by everyday Kiwis for what she calls “second-hand fashion styling”.

don’t know where to begin, it can be disempowering. We’re making high-end, styled fashion accessible to everyone. When you know what looks good on your shape and how to pair pieces, you could look a million dollars wearing a $30 outfit from a thrift store. Plus that same item will be saved from the landfill.”

Bree wanted to build a brand around empowering women to embrace their individuality. “Fashion has the ability to make you feel amazing if you know how to work with it, but for many women who

TOP TIPS FOR NABBING THE PERFECT FASHION FIND •B e open-minded when browsing through second hand stores. It pays to go when you’re feeling relaxed and have time to browse. •S earch for prints or colours that you are drawn to and focus on quality fabrics.

Images: Bree shows off a co-ord she has styled and worn in different ways.

Vintage pieces are often made of quality fabrics that are cut well and will last a lifetime.

• A lways try on the garment in store to

make sure there aren’t any flaws (rips,

tears etc.) that could be missed when you look at an item on the hanger.

• S izing is important as you want the pieces to fit your body well; however don’t take a tag’s word for it. Sizing can be vastly different depending on brands, the era the garment was from and country etc.

Always hold it up against your body to get a feel for whether it would fit you rather than disregard it because the size displayed on the tag is different to your usual size. IF YOU’VE FOUND SOMETHING THAT’S ‘ALMOST RIGHT’ - UPGRADE IT! •A lways experiment with your garments! How something appears on the hanger or mannequin is not always how it needs to be worn. For example, you can repurpose a skirt into a dress...there are no rules!

• P lay around with necklines! Tuck your collar in to get a V-neck, or turn tops,

dresses and sweaters around to get a

higher neck at the front with a lower back. A shirt can be worn in about six different ways in order to complement your body shape.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE Words Maddie Long

Old School Inc. are second to none when it comes to curating the most incredible collection of unique and eclectic homewares. From recycled apple baskets to hand-crafted Italian grain sacks repurposed as stylish cushions; reclaimed steel table lamps to a one-of-a-kind metal topped bar leaner from a film set; European Demijohns originally for storing wine to an antique apothecary cabinet - for every item that owner Leigh sources there is a story to go with it. Now in store (but probably not for long) are a beautiful range of ethically sourced, hand woven Afghan and Turkish rugs. The Nomadic rugs, woven in Afghanistan, feature techniques of both kilim and pile weaving, hand spun natural wools, goat hair and cotton combined with unique dying and washing techniques to achieve this unique aesthetic. The Afghan Chobi kilim rugs are made by artisans drawing inspiration from their surroundings and from ancient Silk Road textiles. A 150 x 100cm rug could be completed in two to three months by

an experienced artisan working many hours a day. The hallmark of an Afghan Beljik rug is its remarkable colour, from varying shades of deep reds, blues and blacks knotted into intricate geometric patterns with complex borders. These rugs are generally considered to be the finest of all tribal style rugs, and the name “Beljik” comes from the finely-spun Belgium wool they use. Production of a 2.7m x 3.6m rug could be completed in six to ten months, by four to five experienced artisans working five to six hours a day.

The nature of the process means that every rug is unique to its place of origin and (in this case) to its craftswoman. With no two ever the same, these really are oneoff treasures to be snapped up so pop in or check out their Facebook page for opening hours. 745 Matakana Road, Matakana

The Afghan Kazak rugs represent an endeavour to recreate the traditional rugs while still ensuring they remain functional and serviceable. These finely woven rugs have a thin, closely sheared wool pile that creates the aged look. Tulu (meaning ‘long-haired’ in Turkish) rugs are woven in Afghanistan, were made in the past for the purpose of getting warmth and for sleeping.

LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE AND MEDICINE BE THY FOOD Kakariki Health and Wellbeing Store, Mangawhai has recently changed hands to Craig and Anneke White, who also run the online store - Mangawhai Food Store. They have lived in Mangawhai for 12 years now and feel at home in the beautiful European designed shop, next to the popular Bennetts Café and Chocolatier.

In 2019 they had a life changing camping holiday around Europe with their children and loved the scenery, people, climate and food. “The food was just amazing, a lot is still produced traditionally.” says Craig. Their trip inspired them to start their online foodstore, selling a lot of Mediterranean food. They were looking for a shop premise, then they met Alison at Kakariki and got on well, and it all flowed from there. “We are so thrilled to be part of the beautiful Bennetts complex, looking out into the courtyard I feel like I am in Europe! says Anneke. “Our aim is for our store to complement the complex by adding delicious Mediterranean foods, jars of olives, capers, feta etc.” Craig and Anneke have been into natural health for over 17 years, when Anneke was pregnant with their first child. Having five children, they know the hardest thing is seeing your child unwell and they would

always research natural alternatives for health care. They are familiar with much of what's in-store and they have a passion for continual learning of the different supplements. The couple will be keeping all of the great natural health supplements, crystals and gifts. Roger Bull will keep his popular osteopathy practise in the back room. The lovely Nicola, a natural health practitioner, from Tara Retreat will continue to grace the store on Wednesdays and Fridays. Only a few items will slowly phase out, as they are aware of the need in the community to keep supplying all of the products that work to help keep everyone well and balanced. Over the next few weeks, they will be slowly making some additions, stocking the shop with more organic food and an array of delicious Mediterranean food. “It's like a welcome taste of sunshine, when you taste olives, dolmades, sun dried

tomatoes or our ever popular peaches and apricots from Greece” Anneke says. The Mediterranean cuisine includes a lot of lemon, garlic and olive oil, and these are a powerful combination of vitamins and omegas, with detoxifying qualities. In 400 BCE, Greek physician Hippocrates regarded citrus to energise the body and counteract phlegm. He prescribed garlic and olive oil, the latter for over 60 medical conditions. These remedies stand up to modern scientific research (www.livestrong.com). Hippocrates’ words resonate with Anneke and Craig - 'Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.' “In our family health starts with a quality diet and then is supported with supplements,” they say. “Balanced with some delicious chocolate from next door - of course!” 09 4314070 kakariki.health@gmail.com

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR Early spring is beckoning, and this month your garden will be showing signs of new life. The winter solstice on 21 June is receding into the past and daylight hours are increasing. For your garden that means each day more of the sun’s energy is reaching your soil and plants. As well as the energy going into your garden, the changes in sunlight hours are triggers for some plants, as to when they flower or produce bulbs or tubers. Potatoes and onions are examples of plants that respond to increasing day length. Getting these plants into the ground at the right time is important.

POTATOES With early spuds (when your soil may be a little on the wet or cold side) the best approach is to sprout or chit your potatoes before planting in the soil. To sprout your potatoes lay them out in a single layer in a warm, sunny spot inside (an egg carton is perfect). The potatoes will go green and sprout - once they are 3-4cm long they are ready to go into the ground.

We are lucky to have taewa (Maori potatoes) in New Zealand, and varieties include Kowiniwini, Moemoe and Urenika.

ONIONS Onions like a position with full sun, in a fertile free draining soil with consistent soil moisture. They will grow best in soil with a pH above 6.0 so a dressing of garden lime may be needed several weeks before planting. Onions need to be kept well weeded to thrive. They like cool weather early on to grow their green tops. The bulbs form later in the growing cycle in summer. As a rule of thumb allow 120-200 days from sowing to harvest, depending on the variety you plant. You can sow directly but will get best results

by sowing into seed trays and planting out after four to eight weeks. Space plants 5-10cm apart. Early maturing onions include California Red, White Sweet Spanish and Yellow Sweet Spanish. The classic main crop onion is Pukekohe Long Keeper, which stores well, but will need 14 hours or more of daylight to form the best bulbs. Onions planted too late in Spring are likely to give you small bulbs. Get them planted by late September to get best results.

A lot of late winter/early spring crops like brassicas, parsley, celery and fennel will start to grow at their best when planted out in August. The moist cooler conditions with improving sunlight hours will really make them sing. If you have a glass house or plastic tunnel house August is a good time to get your tomatoes and other warm loving plants going. Courgettes will also thrive in a tunnel house, but it may be a little early outside depending on how cold and wet your soil is.

COASTAL FARMHOUSE Words Kate Moore Photos Jay Farnworth - Image Search Ltd.

Bringing clients' wish lists to life is a passion for Kyle Brown from Warkworth Construction Ltd, along with his talented team of craftsmen. This coastal farmhouse nestled in the Tawharanui Peninsula was no exception. The original project was a two-month job and the brief was to extend the 300 square metre house by an additional 20 square metres to enhance the kitchen and dining area. As the original brief evolved (about halfway through the project) it became apparent that this would become a complete rebuild, which then lasted 16 months. This wasn’t the first renovation the property has seen; originally built over 100 years ago this was the third time that builder's tools have altered the building, but this was a biggie as not only were they completing the extension they were also fixing up some dubious alterations the property had experienced. The entire family moved out to the next-door property which they converted into a self-contained sleepout while their

home was shrink wrapped so that the entire roof could be redone. The old clay tiles were removed and a new ColourSteel roof put in on top of the new trusses giving the house not only a new roof line but also safer water to consume. The original cottage would’ve been constructed out of a Kauri frame which was unfortunately full of borer (hence the original renovation request) and so exterior walls were completely replaced as were the majority of the internal walls. The ceilings were raised to give the property a lofty feel and genuine oak flooring was placed throughout to create a sense of elegance. Joinery was replaced and all the windows were substituted with double glazing to showcase the rolling hills that surround them. Kyle's favourite part of the renovation is below ground however, in the portion of the house that used to house the old water tank. This was removed and a brand-new, stunning, oak staircase now leads you down to an

entertainer's dream. A wine cellar, housing some delicious and rare drops sits behind a purpose-built gate. A billiards table and slot machines fill the previously unused space. The original brief to increase the size of the kitchen and dining area was also completed to immaculate standards and a new kitchen graces the house, complete with a scullery. No stone was left untouched as the outside of the property was also given a revamp with all the decks replaced, an outdoor fireplace constructed and an entertaining area completed. Plus two new water tanks were also moved on to the property. As the Bishops have lived there for 20 years the landscaping was already well established and the pool already onsite. This wonderful and sympathetic renovation will allow the family to live here and create magical memories for many years to come. Kyle Brown – 021 494 278 www.warkworthconstruction.co.nz

FULL OF THE JOYS OF SPRING For Dan Gray, General Manager at Springboard the future is looking full of opportunity. The local organisation that provides wrap-around support programmes for young people is moving to bigger premises in November having recently purchased Sheepworld on State Highway 1. Words Dan Auber

With the current site often housing up to 50 young people a day across the ten programs Springboard offer provided by their 24 staff, things were starting to get a little cramped. The programs include alternative education, youth offenders intervention, work transition, parenting courses, driving, boxing and community engagement initiatives. All these initiatives are designed to help meet the organisation’s ultimate goals of 0% unemployment within a thriving and safe community. “The current property is starting to have a limiting effect” says Dan, “and for the last couple of years we’ve been trying to figure out what to do. We’ve also had people talk to us about opportunities to engage in new programmes such as horticulture.” The eleven hectares of Sheepworld, along with its existing functions will allow Springboard to keep doing what it already does while adding a plethora of new prospects. The aim is to keep Sheepworld running with the existing staff, still open to the public but involving the Springboard whanau. The young people could find themselves gaining new skills by being involved in various activities such as catering in the café, serving in the shop, or helping care for the animals. The staff are also imagining ways to further expand into other areas: “Think of the life that 35-50 extra kids a day will bring to the space and imagine the potential to educate our kids

in the food lifecycle from garden or paddock to plate,” says Dan. For Dan this is about increasing the experiences Springboard provides and is also a way to further strengthen the links they have with the community. “If anyone is keen to be involved, businesses interested

in employing young people, or individuals keen to mentor someone, contact us to join the team.” As Springboard looks to celebrate 20 years working with youngsters next year prospects are looking very rosy. www.springboard.org.nz 09 425 4623

THE COLOUR OF HOPE Words Julie Cotton

No community ever really wanted to take up arms – not really. No individual ever really wanted to release precious moments of their life to fight a battle – not really. The pacifist nature of our modern society has long submitted to apathy and more subdued ways of dealing with conflict and opposition. The all-encompassing grind of our daily lives providing for our families has sadly placed advocacy on the top shelf with other luxury items. For the most part we weave ourselves in and out of our communities in the most genteel of manner, polite smiles and subdued shifting nods are our twenty first century version of acknowledgement and community comradeship. There are very few community issues in our contemporary life that will see us alter our proclivity, however, the decision by our governors to grant consent to place a tip on top of our pristine waterway is one of them. This tip, with its potential risks, threatens to unravel the bonding threads that mother

nature has woven for us, and that risk is too great to ignore. If it takes a village to raise a child, then that family must protect that village. With our natural habitat under siege, strong community benevolence has whipped up a hurricane of support from the commons. Unleashing a rare and wonderful kinship from all walks of life, derived from a desperate need to preserve that of which we hold dear, from those who do not. Standing strong in the heart of this vortex are our iwi, with their ancestral voices and culture as our bastion and guiding light. Northern Rodney is a rural community, a place we live when concrete boulevards have no appeal and nature sits easy on one’s eye. We moved our families here because of this, and now there is an accelerated urgency to protect it. The protection of our environment has long been underpinned by glossy images; those exacting images are the reallife landscapes our community sees when we walk out our front door. Beautiful white

sandy beaches, rolling green hills, diamond sparkling creeks, all flourishing with food to feed our families. For our children, these images were never just photos to stare at. They are a real little set of gumboots looking for tadpoles in a creek, the real tender teachings of their grandfather diving for kina, the real smiles from a bucket of pippi’s to share, but mostly they are the tangible and touchable songs their natural environment plays in their hearts. The children in our communities have done more than just listen to the environmental teachings of their educators, they have pinned the happiness derived from its simple pleasures into their own moral conscience and have acted to protect her. Our children, on bended knees with grubby little hands from planting trees will now question the irresponsible authority who teach, then take. Waste free, eco friendly and learn to love a bee. The lessons that we have whispered to them are now their raging voices of hope and

responsibility to uphold the values that we speak. Their frolicking amongst nature with innocent expenditure has gifted a critical key to unlock the blindness that is causing our decision makers not to see. The clarity of their youth and their willingness to embrace the elements that surround them will not see their spades lowered to the ground with ease. The time has now come to grab our children by the hand and allow their bright glow of hope to permeate our community for its future and its fragile landscape. We must not allow the poor decisions from those who govern us to diminish the lessons we teach, nor take away from the future they seek. The battle to protect our community and its environment is not over yet. We must all countersink our heart and soul into the soil of which our forefathers sleep. Mother nature is in the gun, so together we must form a strong combat line. There will be no white flag raised above this community, instead the yellow flag of hope will be hoisted high above our lands with much integrity, mana and community conviction. www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/fightthetip www.facebook.com/ groups/1779806875465887

YOU ARE NOT ALONE Hestia Rodney Women's Refuge is more than a safe house. Words Kate Moore

Hestia Rodney Women's Refuge provide a supportive, confidential and compassionate community support service for women and children experiencing any kind of family violence – physical, psychological, financial or sexual. “We will walk alongside any women who needs us for as long as they need us too. We provide a safe space and ensure that their choices are being heard and that some of the responsibility is removed. It is not their fault.” The team of ten currently support around 100 families in an area which expands as far North as the Mangawhai and Kaiwaka region, coast-to-coast and as far South as Coatesville/Dairy Flat and Helensville. Outside of this area they work hand-in-hand with other agencies to ensure that the right support is provided. For Opal, (one of the co-ordinators) her day begins by triaging any referrals that have come through; from the 24-hour crisis line or from the police, supporting clients or the team that are on the road dealing with situations, ensuring that safety plans are in place and needs are

being met. Then comes dropping off food or clothing parcels, transporting clients to and from appointments (lawyers, court, WINZ, counselling) or to the safe house or a motel, assisting with referrals to Abuse Prevention Services for safety programs that educate people (including a non-violence program for men), and helping sort donations at their Op shop, ‘The Kowhai Tree’. The team “see and hear some of the worst things that humanity can do to each other” and currently the centre is seeing a rise in unseen violence: this is constant name calling, put downs and mind games that make someone doubt that their own mind is sound. This is usually coupled with financial abuse where often they are set up to fail, possibly with a very small budget and then constantly told that they are failing to provide and that they (the women) will be reported for not being able to take care of her children. As this abuse is not seen by others it results in the women feeling isolated and the “wish that he would just hit me so that I would have a bruise for everyone to see.”

Hestia Women's Refuge relies on donations to enable women and children to start over. They are always needing good quality bedding, household items (non electrical), clothing, basic furniture, toiletries (including sanitary items), food, nappies or gift cards for the supermarket or Warehouse, so please make a donation. If you have a gut feeling that something isn’t right in your relationship and would like to talk to someone, please call 0800 321 361. If you would like more information on how to help this not-for-profit organisation, please visit their website or Facebook page @hestiarodneywomensrefuge. ABUSE PREVENTION SERVICES Family violence isn’t a very sexy topic, but it is a very real issue in our community. Abuse Prevention Services (APS) offers educational programs and counselling to both perpetrators of violence (power and control), and to survivors, including to youth and children. They have highly skilled staff and contractors working to create real change with their clients. “Our goal is to support people to have safe and healthy relationships and we strive for an abuse free Rodney and Hibiscus Coast. But we are facing very real financial challenges,” says Clinical Manager Liz Cole. “APS gets some government funding but this does not cover the number of clients we see. We also have very unique pressures as we cover a huge geographical area and we have a population that is exploding in size exponentially.” Families are also increasingly facing pressures that add to incidents of harm.

When someone is served a protection order they are automatically mandated to attend a non-violence program funded by the Ministry of Justice. At APS it is heartening to see a high number of men self refer to their programs. However the difficulty is that much of this work is unfunded. As an agency, they have aspirations to continue to offer exceptional programs and support to the community, but also wish to grow their offering. This includes provision of parenting programs that assist repair of damaged parent child relationships when a parent has caused harm in their family. As well as programs that support parents to soothe the trauma that both they and their child have experienced due to being witnesses or victims of family violence. Parenting is a powerful way to stop the intergenerational cycle of violence. APS is working towards building their clinical team so that they can wrap support around

families. “We are also wanting to rebrand as the current name causes barriers for people in feeling comfortable accessing our services. All this requires financial backing,” says Liz. The ‘It’s Not OK’ campaign is out there and it is imperative that organisations such as APS can viably respond to the need, in order to keep people safe. APS is a stand alone agency that does not have the financial support of nationwide advertising and they need the community's help. They are seeking both charitable donations (Abuse Prevention Services 12-30950139462-00) and corporate or philanthropic support/partnership. Please contact Liz Cole to organise a meeting to discuss their needs and how you might be able to help them to make a real difference. clinicalmanager@abuseprevention.org.nz 021 545 975

NATURE IS THE BEST ARTIST There are endless examples of beautiful design in nature. Even zeroing in on New Zealand marine species, we’re spoilt for choice. To highlight a few favourites, and a couple of underdogs, I thought I’d share my top four. Words Georgia Third

Coming in at fourth, are galaxiids, or you may

know them as whitebait. Their scientific family name is Galaxiidae, after the stellar pattern on adult fish that resembles a galaxy. That

etymology alone is beautiful! The “whitebait” we know and love, are actually multiple

species. The largest of which, the Giant Kōkopu can reach a whopping 60cm!

When researching my third-place species, I was surprised to find many people have called it the “most ugly of fish”. I couldn’t disagree more. Red gurnard are not only tasty to eat, but their bright, mottled red

bodies are adorned with butterfly-esque

fins. The front of these ‘wings’ are used to

walk along the seafloor and contain sensory organs to feel for food. If threatened by a

predator, they can flare their brilliant fins and scare them off. A close second, must be awarded to nudibranchs. Many people haven’t even heard of these marine slugs but there are hundreds of species worldwide. Most nudibranchs are brightly coloured and patterned to blend into their home among coral reefs. New Zealand’s clown nudibranch though, with vivid, orange spots and purple, frilly gills get their colour from the sponges they eat. Nudibranch concentrates the ingested toxins from the sponges into its flesh to fend off predators. Like many other brightly coloured species, the intense colouration sends a strong signal - “I don’t taste good, don’t eat me!” In first place, Pāua. One of New Zealand’s

most iconic species. The iridescent shine of purples, greens and blues in the shell are caused by refracted light through layers of calcium crystals. As the Pāua shell grows it deposits layer upon layer of crystals sandwiched between black sheets of protein. When light shines through the layers, light is refracted in slightly different angles, akin to how water droplets make rainbows. The colour signature of pāua varies depending on the area and habitat too. Chatham Island Pāua for example, tends to be bluer. There are so many more gorgeous species living in the sea around our coastline. Let me know if I missed your favourite! Twitter handle: @super_snapper georgia.third@niwa.co.nz

‘THE JUSTICE OF BUNNY KING’ Starring Essie Davis and Thomasin Mckenzie releases on 29 July. Following its world premiere at Tribeca Film

Festival, local film ‘The Justice of Bunny King’ will open in nationwide cinemas on Thursday 29 July. Starring multi award-winning

actor Essie Davis (from ‘The Babadook’)

alongside critically acclaimed local actor

Thomasin McKenzie (of ‘Jojo Rabbit'), The Justice of Bunny King is Gaysorn Thavat’s

directorial debut on a feature film. Thavat’s short film ‘Brave Donkey’ was selected for

BFI London Film Festival, Locarno Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival.

Written by Sophie Henderson (of ‘Baby, Done’), The Justice of Bunny King tells the story of Bunny King, a mother of two, a rough-cut diamond with a sketchy past. While battling the system to reunite with her children, a confrontation leads her to take her niece Tonyah under her wing. With the world against her and Tonyah, Bunny’s battle has just begun. "Films like this simply do not get made without the generosity and passion of many,” said director Gaysorn Thavat. Memorable

and relatable, it was the lack of visibility of stories about characters like Bunny that drew Thavat in. “The Justice of Bunny King is a film that celebrates the courage of ordinary women facing extraordinary struggles, and I look forward to bringing it home for the women of Aotearoa who inspired it.” Produced by Emma Slade of Firefly Films (‘Come to Daddy’), The Justice of Bunny King was made with financing from the New Zealand Film Commission and its 125 Fund, with assistance from the New Zealand Government’s Screen Production Grant and Screen Production Recovery Fund. The Justice of Bunny King is showing at Matakana Cinemas from Thursday 29 July, visit their website for bookings. www.matakanacinemas.co.nz www.fireflyfilms.co.nz/tjobk
