FRIENDS WHO SHOP Founded by two young Tawharanui entrepreneurs, Daniel Hubbard and Paige Patten, FriendsWith ® is a new social platform that enables lovers of fashion to connect with brands and one another to build a community. Words Shannen Frear

A custom-made app like no other, FriendsWith ® aims to ultimately bridge the gap and create an elevated shopping experience for everyone to enjoy. A promising addition to the online shopping and affiliate earning market. The pair have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Over the years they have experimented with many different ideas and are now successfully running three incredible businesses. It was in the first 2020 lockdown, where the couple were gifted the extra time at home. This gave them the opportunity to re-evaluate why their current roles were not filling their cup. Feeling inspired, Daniel and Paige immediately got stuck into brainstorming and pouring love into their new ‘baby’; FriendsWith ®. The concept of FriendsWith ® was developed through Dan and Paige's own personal online shopping experiences. The lightbulb moment sparked when the pair realised that they were relying heavily on social media, not only for outfit inspiration, but also as a more interesting and fulfilling way to shop. If you are a retail savvy customer looking for a modern and creative way to shop, get inspiration and maybe even earn, FriendsWith® offers a world of exclusive fashion and lifestyle content, with all images shoppable, meaning you can purchase the item you fall in love with, right then and there. The FriendsWith ® app gives power to consumers. It allows creators to only share content and products that they have purchased themselves, making the content that shoppers are being shown 100% authentic and genuine - something that can easily be lost in the modern online

world we live in today. The platform offers a cutting-edge means of earning, sharing and shopping. Inspired by building a business that will make an impact as well doing something incredible with their time, the founders are excited to watch it grow into something that helps shape the new generation of E-Commerce. “Dan worked tirelessly on bringing our ideas to life, by building the code for FriendsWith ® as a complete personalised solution. Because it is a custom app, everything we achieve is totally unique and brings an entirely customer focussed experience,” explains Paige. The dynamic duo also run Studio Boucle, a luxury home brand, as well as Friends With Vintage, an online vintage clothing store. “Starting businesses comes naturally to us because we don’t let the fear stop us from trying, we really just jump in the deep end”, they explain. Cherishing the fact that they get to work together, live together and learn together every day, Paige says they live by the quote “you will miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. In other words you can’t succeed if you never try. www.instagram.com/friendswithapp www.friendswithapp.com

A BELOVED SPORT Mahurangi College alumnus, Ruahei Demant, has just been appointed Captain of the Black Ferns rugby team. While that is an amazing achievement itself, it is an added honour this year with New Zealand playing host to the Women’s Rugby World Cup, starting 8 October. Words Luke Williamson | Photos NZ Rugby

“My goal for the last couple of years has been to make the World Cup team,” says Ruahei. “I want to be starting all the games, if possible, and that’s my only goal for now – I’m not looking at anything beyond the World Cup.”

my friends again. That’s what I missed

That sort of focus is understandable for a woman who has undergone three knee reconstructions, all before she had turned 21. Ruahei says, “the third was more difficult because of the physical rehab, and it was really challenging mentally. I had associated a big part of my identity with becoming a Black Fern, but, after my third surgery, it was suggested I shouldn’t play rugby again.”

Storm team. “I was really shocked

The slow recovery sent Ruahei into a downward spiral for some time, but she eventually found a comfortable new reality. “I got to a point where I was okay with not being a Black Fern because I just wanted the opportunity to play rugby with

the most.” With that simple motivation, Ruahei took every opportunity to ease herself back into her beloved sport.

At the end of her first club season back, she was selected to rejoin the Auckland because I didn’t think I would make it

back into that environment. From there, I got a chance to trial for the Black Ferns and I debuted for them in 2018.”

During the difficult years of injury and

recovery, Ruahei also managed to graduate

with a Law Degree. “I’ve been working in law

since then, but, this year, I made the decision to only focus on rugby.” The decision by

the New Zealand Rugby Football Union to offer full-time contracts to the World Cup Squad made that decision possible for

Ruahei. Now the pressure is on to deliver.

“Our coaching group has been putting that pressure on us so we’re prepared for when we step out onto the paddock, and making sure we have the tools and skills to cope,” says Ruahei. “We’re looking forward to executing an exciting and up-tempo style of rugby.” That coaching group is the formidable team of Whitney Hansen, Wesley Clarke, Wayne Smith and Graham Henry. “We have the best minds in world rugby working with us and it’s been very, very enjoyable rugby to play under their direction.” Ruahei appears to be genuinely perplexed at being asked to captain the Black Ferns, but she clearly impressed the selectors with her performances on and off the park for Auckland Storm. She stumbles a bit when I ask her why she believes she was given the role. “I’m a game driver because of the position I play, but being Captain was not something I was thinking

about – it was a bit of a shock.” Ruahei explained the prerequisites for captaincy, as laid out to her by the selectors. “I have to be on the field – the fittest and best in my position. I have to be onboard with the style of game the coaches are planning. The leadership team has to be able to drive and communicate the game plan to other members of the team during pressure moments. And we have to be able to uphold our standards on and off the field.” Ruahei guarantees a return to her law career, but she is very aware of how short a professional athlete’s career can be. “There’s never going to be another time in my life when I can be doing what I’m doing right now, so I’m going to try and make the most of this for as long as I can,” she says. www.allblacks.com/playerprofiles/ ruahei-demant www.rugbyworldcup.com/2021

CERAMIC ARTIST: NADINE MCCONNELL Following in the footsteps of her grandparents, local ceramic artist, Nadine McConnell, creates beautiful pieces for your home. Words Milly Nolan

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A CERAMIC ARTIST?

I always had an interest in ceramics, as both my late Grandparents were potters in the 60’s and 70’s, and growing up as kids we had their pots scattered everywhere around our family home and I always knew one day I’d give it a go. I took my first class at Mairangi Bay Arts Centre in 2016 with my close-knit coffee-group Mums. I continued for a few more terms after that and from there it progressed from purchasing a wheel, and then eventually a kiln.

I started out in very humble beginnings with a small lockup shed, then we moved to the Matakana region in 2020, and we converted half of our barn into a pottery studio. This allowed me to expand a little and offer my pieces to a wider range of wholesale accounts around the country, as well as sell at the local Matakana Country Park Market. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR POTTERY STYLE? Simple, contemporary and functional. I go through stages of one-off larger style

planters and vases, to collections of smaller functional pieces like beakers, cups and tumblers. Most of my work is cross-functional, so you’re able to use them in various rooms around the home. WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR CREATIONS? I draw a lot of inspiration from the surrounding coastline. The shapes, patterns and colours that nature creates on our landscape. I add a pinch of local sand to most pieces, so when you purchase a

piece, hopefully it takes you back to the time spent at beautiful beaches in the area. WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I love that every day there is something new. There are not a lot of limits in the world of ceramics, you can work with different clays, glazes and temperatures to achieve completely different results. I also love that I can plan and work around my two young children, something that wouldn’t be so easy back in the corporate world, so I’m very grateful to be doing something that I not only love, but also fits around our lifestyle. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A GOOD POTTERY ARTIST?

Practice. I’m certainly not a natural potter. I’ve had a lot of failures along my journey. So the best piece of advice is to practice, ask questions and learn from others either via a club, studio or even looking at YouTube for instructional videos. And make mistakes - the only way to realise limits of a clay body is to push it. WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY... From the first meeting with Linda and Rob, I knew that I would be in the right hands. Not only had they just sold 2 properties in my street, but talking to them, I could see they knew the local market very well and they both had good ideas about the best way to promote my property. I am not new to selling property and have worked with many agents over the last 20 years, but from the start, Linda and Rob made sure the whole process, from putting together the marketing, choosing the right method of sale (for my unique property), managing the Open Homes and viewings was stress free. They are highly professional in the way they run their business together as a team, know their market and jobs very well, and at the same time, are easy going and very approachable people to deal with, which makes working with them a pleasure. In just a few weeks, Linda and Rob had negotiated some good offers on my house, which was a brilliant result. I can highly recommend Linda and Rob as agents that you would choose to sell your property and if I am ever in the position again, I would not hesitate to call them up. Helen

Great result, would definitely recommend. From our first meeting and right through to settlement, Linda and Rob were easy to work with, were happy to follow our instructions and did a very professional job. We are happy to recommend their services to anybody buying or selling and would definitely use this highly competent and friendly team again. Thanks Linda and Rob. Beverley Easy to deal with, addressed all queries. Excellent knowledge. Felt listened to and considered. No pressure. Honest agents, best I’ve dealt with. Simone Professional and calm Linda and Rob worked well together for our property in Matakana. They were patient, professional, and reassuring during unprecedented times. At all times Linda and Rob kept us informed, their communication was excellent. Nothing was ever an issue. Thank you Linda and Rob.. Phillippa

ART IN AUGUST For the second year, the Mahurangi College Art Department is excited to announce the 'Art in August' showcase in collaboration with One Mahurangi Business Association and The Warkworth Oaks. Words Kate Moore

This annual exhibition will have pieces on display from professional artists and 100 pieces of work from students of Mahurangi College. Senior students will select thought-provoking work from their NCEA assessments. The focus is on various themes, such as sustainability and environmental concerns, by capturing the beauty of the student's local area. The Year 10 students will display pieces based on the theme of aitanga pepeke - the insect world demonstrating their photography experiences from around the river and native bush areas. Nyree Norrington, Head of the Mahurangi College Art Department, says, "the show strengthens the ties between the community and the College. It also allows our students to experience a gallery setting and to see their work for sale for the first time". This year three professional artists will exhibit alongside the students. The first is returning artist Arlin Sukarlin with his energetic abstract work. Arlin has had a very successful year;

he was accepted as an exhibiting member of Nelson's Suter Art Gallery, was invited to exhibit at the "Joanna Dudson-Scott Gallery" and is currently a guest exhibitor at the "Alan Scott Winery" restaurant. He was placed second in "International Artist" magazine's abstract and experimental competition with his work "Enchantment" and has had a feature article in the "American Art Collector" magazine. Arlin is currently based in Marlborough and finds inspiration from the world around him. Airlin's work is a multitude of colours, textures and shapes. He draws inspiration from his Indonesian heritage and the mesmerising sunrises he has witnessed in the ocean during his time as a fisherman. Lucy Rice and Jeanine Pulsford are two new artists to present this year. Jeanine is the former Head of Art at Kristin School and has exhibited widely in Auckland. Her paintings are symbolic references of time passed. Lucy Rice is a local artist based in Snells Beach. Her work juxtaposes acrylics and

mixed media in soft pastel colours, creating intuitive abstract pieces which play on the idea of combining physical and emotional landscapes into a single painting. The 'Art in August' exhibition will be held in the Southgate Room above the Warkworth Hotel and open to the public on the dates below. All artworks from artists and students will be for sale with a 10% commission on the artist's sales going to the Mahurangi College Art Department, and the students will directly receive the money from their work. One Mahurangi Invitees Evening: 5-9pm Thursday 4 August. Opening for college and community: 4-6pm Friday 5 August. General Public: 10am-4pm Friday 5 August, 10am-4pm Saturday 6 August and 10am-2pm Sunday 7 August. www.mahurangi.school.nz www.facebook.com/mahurangicollege

CURATED CANDLES Blanche & Coco can be best described as a homeware company that redefines candles as we know them. Their interesting candle moulds, ranging from feminine figures to scallop shells and bubble cubes, make for an interesting and beautiful object for your home. Originally founded in Mangawhai, in October 2020, Blanche & Coco is the brainchild of best friends Ariana Tugaga and Martine Tidyman. Ariana with a background in corporate marketing, and Martine with interior management, meant the pair brought a wide range of experience and skill sets to the foundation of Blanche & Coco, helping the business achieve success from a very early stage. Armed with a passion for beautiful fashion and homewares, as well as plenty of competitor analysis, research and development and product trials under their belt, the pair succeeded in creating a range of candles that not only smell delicious, but also bring life to any coffee table, dresser, or curated corner of a home. Much like the candles, the Blanche & Coco branding and packaging in beige and ivory hues helps maintain the simple sophistication of the brand.

To launch Blanche & Coco, the pair created digital and social platforms through Shopify, Instagram, and Facebook. Initially weekends were spent crafting product shoots, editing images, adding descriptions, and giving their brand the right look and feel to bring their vision to life. Creating a new company was not the easiest journey, especially while the pair continued to work their full-time jobs. Helping them to stay driven, the pair relied on the quote “if it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. It’s the hard that makes it great” – Anon.

partnership with New Zealand owned

Fast forward nearly two years and Blanche & Coco is getting stronger year by year. Ariana now operates Blanche & Coco as the sole owner, and despite growing in size, the candles are still proudly handmade with love in Auckland from sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. Some of Ariana’s key highlights over the past two years have been creating a strong

& Coco Instagram (@blancheandcoco)

company Onceit, which has helped grow Blanche & Coco’s brand and online

presence. Other key highlights have been having Blanche & Coco candles feature

on customer’s wedding table settings, and most recently a 3000-unit candle order for a Mother’s Day gift with purchase. Ariana says that Blanche & Coco’s

successes could not be possible without the support of her partner and family.

Ariana has big future plans for the curated

candle company and mentions the Blanche as a good place to stay in the know. If

LIQUID ART Kirsty, of Kirsty Jane Designs, is a 'Fluid Artist,' sometimes referred to as a 'Paint Pourer.' Whether it’s jewellery, wall art or pieces for your home, her designs are full of colour, texture and patterns.

Originally from England, Kirsty and her husband moved to Kapiti Coast in 2009, where she continued a career in banking. A decade later, they decided to relocate to Warkworth to be closer to her family who had recently emigrated. Leaving her job due to the move, gave Kirsty time to think about new possibilities. Kirsty says “I’ve always had a creative eye and experimented with acrylic paint pours as a hobby. With more time to consider and reflect, and with the encouragement of friends and family, I decided that I should just go for it and follow my passion. Someone once said to me, ‘if you love what you do, you’ll never work again’.” So, in 2021, Kirsty’s Dad built her a great workspace and her Mum enjoyed shopping for paints and products with her, for her small studio. And just like that, Kirsty Jane Designs was born. As a ‘Fluid Artist’, Katie’s technique of

acrylic paint pouring is a fun, abstract way to paint and consists of many different techniques. It involves the use of fluid art mediums, such as free-flowing acrylic paint, powdered pigments and/or inks. Due to the paint pour process and variety of techniques used, every piece Kirsty creates is completely unique. From the 'Dutch pour' technique, which uses air to move the paints across a surface (Kirsty favours a hairdryer or straw) to pouring layered paint through a funnel or strainer; both techniques produce very different compositions. Kirsty says that the success of the final composition is the correct paint consistency, choosing a wellblended colour palette and selecting the appropriate technique. Extremely passionate about sustainability, Kirsty uses the paint that runs off her canvases for many of her smaller, unique pieces (such as her gift pieces and

wearable art). She is environmentally conscious and takes the opportunity to upcycle and recycle where she can with very little waste. Kirsty is very happy to discuss commission pieces for any of her collections, to either complement your home or your outfit. When working with clients, Kirsty spends the time to understand the space and the desired aesthetic to deliver a great piece of unique art. Kirsty Jane Designs currently include Gift Art, Wearable Art and Wall Art, and soon there will also be ‘Walkable Art’ - a collection of fabulous shoes with Kirsty’s artwork printed on them. Available on her website shortly, these ‘KJD’ shoes will be a fun way of wearing art - on your feet! www.kirstyjanedesigns.com kirstyjanedesigns@gmail.com

FRESH FLAVOURS If you already know and love the butchery at Mangawhai, you’ll also be sure to love the new European-style Klinks Family Deli, that the same owners, Dan and Ange Klink, have recently opened at Mangawhai Heads. Words Luke Williamson | Photos Elevated Media

“The opportunity for more space arose,” says Dan Klink, “which enables us to

venture into more products and ranges as we could only ever do a small amount of

deli produce at the Butchery.” The deli is

already up and running under the guidance of a good retail team, and, while there are always uncertainties with starting a new business, Dan says, “sometimes you've just got to put your boots on and back

yourself.” A solid reputation for quality

products and service at the butchery will no doubt help attract customers to the deli. A delicious-sounding array of products are on offer at the Klinks Family Deli. “There will be a small selection of stuff from the butchery,” says Dan “as well as lots of local, award-winning cheeses; beautiful, imported French cheeses; lots of New Zealandmade charcuterie; salads and sandwiches; rotisserie chickens; fresh pastas; and a great selection of pickles and condiments. We’ll

stock lots of quality, tasty, gluten-free options as well – we’ve always prided ourselves on catering for that at the Butchery.” The shop is influenced by European-style delicatessens and Dan’s time working overseas. “In London, we had a massive cheese selection and I gained a good knowledge of charcuterie from the markets. I also worked for an Italian business in Melbourne, which helped me bring European influences to my business models here.”

Customers can look forward to further innovations at the Deli as time goes on. “We’ll look at doing platters over the summer so people can pop in for a picnic to take to the beach,” says Dan. “We already do family pies at the Butchery, as well as heat-and-eat meals, so some of those will come to the Deli also.” While there will be some crossovers, Dan aims to keep the butchery as it is for now because he doesn’t want to lose its essence. “We want people to have a reason to go to both stores,” he says. Mangawhai has a strong community and their support is vital to new ventures like Klinks Family Deli. “We’ve owned the Butchery for 10 years and we hope people will remember we’re a local family and the spirit of the town is kept alive by local support,” says Dan. “We are always thinking of how we can grow and adapt while maintaining the quality and local feel. We really appreciate the support we get from locals for the Butchery and we hope they’ll show that same support for the Deli.” 7 Wood St, Mangawhai Heads www.instagram.com/klinks_family_deli

SUPERIOR SEAFOOD While only four years old, Northern Waters is a family-owned business going from strength to strength. Passionate about delivering the freshest, export quality oysters to restaurants and lodges across New Zealand, they also have a busy retail shop just north of Warkworth, offering an incredible array of kaimoana. Words Luke Williamson

The Northern Oysters shop, run by Gary Brown and his team, is selling oysters, snapper and flounder sourced from the Kaipara. “We’re very focussed on the Kaipara as a region because we believe the taste of the seafood is influenced by the limestone surrounds, and it creates a ‘sweet’ flavour in the snapper, flounder, oysters and other kaimoana. That’s why we bought the farms there.” Also sold at the shop is Fiordland blue cod which has been caught, processed and snap frozen all within a couple of hours so it locks in the freshness and flavour. “That’s selling very strongly and, once people have tried it, they just keep coming back for more.” Also available are scallops, smoked fish and mutton birds, plus other top quality deli items that support the seafood. The oyster farms at Pahi were acquired about four years ago and are managed by Gus Crawford. The company is using new

28

SAVOUR

technology and equipment to control the shape, size and even the flavour of their farmed oysters. “We’re looking to automate the process and handle the oysters using a basket longline system. For everything to be done as well as it can be, we need scale and that’s what we’re aiming at. We’re determined that consumers only ever eat oysters that are at their best.” The company can’t push sales into the rest of New Zealand until they have scaled up their supply chain, something they are hard at work on. There is also interest from overseas buyers who love the shape, size and flavour of the company’s oysters. “It’ll probably be a year or two before we can fulfill those orders, but we’ll get there.” Kaitiakitanga is at the heart of the operation and Northern Oysters has done a lot of work cleaning up old oyster farms in the area, taking away old material. “We’re not doing everything right yet, but we’re doing

it better than we did four years ago. One of the main reasons we want to go to this new farming system is because everything happens out on the water and that makes for a much smaller carbon footprint. We’re always trying to do things better.” The goals for Northern Oysters are to continue to increase production in a sustainable and environmentally-sensitive way, and supply products of consistent quality. “The oysters will look the same, taste the same and only ever be premium grade. The focus will remain on oysters, but there’s an interest in farming seaweed as well. “We think it’s got a great future in New Zealand. I believe a third of the coastline of New Zealand should be a marine reserve and, where conditions are appropriate, we should allow a portion to be used for seaweed farming and multi-layered marine farming.” 182 State Highway 1, Warkworth www.northernwaters.co.nz

SCONES & CREAM The longest running tearoom in New Zealand, the Puhoi Cottage Tea Room, is renowned for its lightas-air, freshly baked scones that come laden with whipped cream and strawberry jam and a perfectly brewed pot of tea on the side. Words Milly Nolan Photos Shannen Frear

Baked daily by the new owner, Steve Roach, the scones are the shining star on the menu at the Puhoi Cottage Tea Room. They are also a nod to the history of the iconic Tea Room which came about in 1970 when the current owner set up a stall in the garden selling scones to the neighbours or any passersby. For over thirty years now the tradition of selling scones has continued and while the Tea Room has passed hands many times, each owner has added their own stamp, making it the eclectic yet charming place that it is today. Steve, and his wife Stephanie, knew the Tea Room well as they lived next door for a decade. When the previous owners closed the Tea Room’s doors in 2019 for personal reasons, Steve jokingly tells the story that he was so upset that he couldn’t buy his daily scone, that he decided he would have to buy the Tea Room so that he could make his own

scones instead. Leaving the corporate world where he had been an accountant for sixteen years, buying the Tea Room in 2022 was a big step for Steve and Stephanie, neither of whom had worked in the hospitality industry before, but their desire to inject life back into the café has seen it rise in popularity once again. Set in beautiful grounds with free-roaming chickens, and an immaculately presented garden which runs down to a river, the Tea Room is a treasure to spend time at. With plans to build a deck near the river for more seating options, Steve is also busy making more outdoor furniture for the up-coming summer which is when the property really comes into its own. While the menu offers all the crowd favourites, such as quiche, hot dogs, pie of the day, and old-fashioned toasted

sandwiches, it’s the infamous scones that fly out the door. Steve himself is sole-in-charge of making them daily from a recipe which he perfected over three weeks of trial and error. Any duds were fed to the chickens who Steve said were a very healthy size by the end of his baking extravaganza. Finally, he settled on a recipe which has proved to be fool-proof but only if he is the one making them. “The recipe is dead simple, it’s just how you put it all together,” says Steve. “You have to be very particular. My wife and son have tried without success. It’s a matter of repetition, technique and consistency to get them nice and fluffy. If you over-knead or under-knead, you’ll be feeding them to the chickens,” he says. With this level of perfection, it is no wonder the scones have such a good reputation and are well worth the visit. 50 Ahuroa Rd, Puhoi 021 288 2554 SAVOUR

SERIOUS ABOUT CEREAL Kaz Staples has just published her memoir The Cereal Entrepreneur: A Story of Grit, Courage and Crunchy Goodness, which details the highs and lows of establishing her successful Puredelish brand, which she sold after twentytwo years in March 2019.

Kaz moved to Matakana with her husband in October 2019, wanting to enjoy a slower pace, after a frantic working life. She knew the area well, as her parents moved to Leigh in the late 90s to retire, and while her mother has now passed, her father still lives in Leigh. The area has many great memories. Written during the Covid lockdowns, Kaz found the time to write her story, which had been on her bucket list after selling the business. Probably not surprisingly, Kaz went through a period of grief and loss after selling Puredelish, and she wanted to honour what she and her team had achieved over a whirlwind twenty-two years.

In 1997 Kaz started her foray into small business. At home, married with two small boys, needing extra money for Christmas presents, she decided to do what she knew well and that was bake. That year Kaz made several hundred cakes. The spark of Kaz’s entrepreneurial spirit started to burn. With a ‘hard work won’t kill you attitude’, Kaz found herself holding down multiple jobs, retail fashion, party-plan jewellery sales, after-hours modelling work and the new seasonal Christmas cake business. Twenty-two years after Kaz’s foray into Christmas cakes, she has built a remarkable market-leading brand in the cereal and snack space with her Puredelish brand in hundreds of supermarkets NZ-wide and exporting to multiple countries. However, after many personal challenges, including her own cancer journey, Kaz decided to sell the business. In May 2019, Kaz received an Order of Merit at Government House in Auckland for her services to the food industry, a fitting and

well-deserved ending to her business. Kaz has written The Cereal Entrepreneur to inspire others and help them know that anything is possible, no matter what. The process of writing the book has given her time to heal and reflect on all the crazy highs and the lowest of lows that she experienced over her time in business. Kaz has since mentored small businesses in the area, sprinkling around some of her gold dust, working with many artisan foodies and wellness people. She is now in a business partnership with Amber Rose at Wild Delicious, a wonderful brand with the same values and incredible product range that Kaz is used to. The Cereal Entrepreneur: A Story of Grit, Courage and Crunchy Goodness by Kaz Staples, Ultimate World Publishing, RRP $34.95, is available from all good bookshops or online. www.kazstaples.com

NEW ENERGY FOR GROWTH Kate Arbuthnot is a well known member of our community and it’s little wonder! Photo Kate Little Photography

After moving to Matakana 12 years ago Kate set up 'Fossick’; a vintage, collected-interiors shop and coffee bar in Matakana Village. Fossick became the ‘hangout’ of many, and while it no longer exists, it was through Fossick that she first developed connections and dear, long-standing friendships with many of the people who live here.

From here Kate, along with a dedicated group of Whangaripo locals, instigate The Whangaripo WildFood Festival then onto host foraged lunches from our Whangaripo lifestyle block (Totem Retreat) which then evolved into a range of other creative workshops.

It’s such an exciting time for the market…

develop new products and businesses.

This then led to food styling gigs on publications and cookbooks, including Matakana's own 'A Village Table' and 'It Takes a Village'. Through this work she developed a deep appreciation for and a connection with many of the local growers and food producers.

Kate’s favourite thing about the markets is the energy...arriving on a crisp, clear morning, early before the crowds, walking down the hill towards a riverside cloaked in mist, the fire already lit, and hearing the banter and laughter rising from the stall holders as they're setting up for the day.

MANGAWHAI BUILDING BOOM Sustainable Kaipara have recently launched a new Construction Waste Feasibility Study for Mangawhai to help understand and bring awareness to the building waste issue in Mangawhai. Words Sarah Bray - Sustainable Kaipara

The launch, attended by Mayor Jason Smith and MP Willow-Jean Prime was to formally announce the project and get project partners together. “We were delighted to have the key project partners, Mayor Jason Smith and Willow-Jean Prime join us to officially launch this exciting project,” said Sarah Bray of Sustainable Kaipara. ”They helped us launch Sustainable Kaipara as an organisation almost to the day two years ago, so their continued support means a lot to us.”

months which will canvas challenges and opportunities for reducing construction waste in Mangawhai. The breakfast is open to the construction industry and anyone interested in this issue. Keep an eye on Sustainable Kaipara’s Facebook page and website for more details. sarah@sustainablekaipara.org www.sustainablekaipara.org

The project aims to evaluate viable options for the diversion of construction waste in Mangawhai. The Mangawhai area is one of the fastest growing residential areas in New Zealand with its population expected to more than double by 2051 making up 86% of Kaipara’s population growth over the next 30 years creating a building boom. Construction and demolition waste makes up 40–50% of New Zealand’s total waste to landfill. For new builds it’s estimated that between 22-33m3 of waste is generated per house. This is a significant issue for a semi-rural community with massive population growth and no landfill within the district. Sustainable Kaipara’s Sarah Bray said, “the project is much needed in Mangawhai as we need to prepare for the significant growth ahead. There’s so much that can be done with construction waste but it’s a complex issue including better design, behaviour change and viability of recycling services. This project is the first step in tackling the issue. There’s plenty of good data and information on this issue so we’re not looking to replicate that, but rather look at the issue with a Mangawhai lens and find fit-for-purpose solutions.”

Left to right: Caren Davis - Sustainable Kaipara (and son Matariki), Edward Sundstrum - Vermont Street Partners, Nick Smith - Smith Construction, Willow-Jean Prime - MP for Northland, Margaret Baker - Sustainable Kaipara, Stephanie Gibson - Sustainable Kaipara, Rob Cook - ITM Mangawhai, Sarah Bray - Sustainable Kaipara, Matt Strong - Finess Group Ltd., Jason Smith - Kaipara Mayor

The feasibility study will complete an independent report that quantifies the size and scope of construction waste in Mangawhai and an implementation plan for potential solutions and approaches, including from a Te Ao Māori perspective. The project will also include an industry engagement campaign to understand and bring awareness to the building waste issue in Mangawhai. The project is funded through the competitive Waste Minimisation Fund from the Ministry for the Environment and co-funded by Vermont Street Partners who are keen to support better construction waste management. Other project partners include Smith Construction, Finess Group and ITM Mangawhai. A Trade Breakfast will be hosted at ITM Mangawhai in the coming

GARDENING CALENDAR Change is in the air this month with the spring garden not too far away. Gardeners with warmer well drained sites will be experiencing a burst of new season growth. Daylight hours have been increasing since mid June. Plants will be feeling the increasing sunlight hours and you will see the change in growth patterns from mid winter’s quietness. Words Geoff Ledbrook

PLANT • • • • • • •

COMFREY A versatile resource for the home garden, Comfrey is a deeply rooted perennial plant, which with careful siting, can provide high quality herbage for liquid fertiliser brews. The flowers are favourites of bumble bees, honey bees and other beneficial insects. Perfect for an orchard, comfrey can be used as living mulch for fruit trees, helping to open up the soil and improving drainage around the trees. It also assists in mining nutrients from the subsoil. Comfrey will die back in winter and in drought conditions, putting organic matter and minerals around the fruit tree. Be careful where you plant comfrey as it grows from a very small piece of root and any digging will spread it and once established, it is hard to get rid of. Comfrey can be propagated from root crowns or just pieces of root. To get the root crowns, dig a mature clump of comfrey and split it up to give a good piece of root and a portion of the growing tip. Plant the crown or roots around 5cm deep. The best time to plant is in winter and spring.

NASTURTIUMS Originally from South America, Nasturtiums are another valuable plant to establish in home orchards and garden borders, but not so much in the garden. Very easy to grow, they are a good host plant for beneficial insects and provide vibrant colour in the garden. The flowers, leaves and seeds of Nasturtiums are all edible. The leaves are high in vitamin C, have a zingy peppery flavour and make a great addition to a fresh salad or green smoothie, or they can be used to make pesto. The flowers are sweeter but still with a hint of pepper. They can add edible colour to a salad or can be stuffed similar to a zucchini flower. The flowers are a good source of vitamins B1, B2 and B3, vitamin C and contain manganese, iron, phosphorus and calcium. Young, juicy green Nasturtium seeds can be pickled or brined and used as a substitute for capers. Plant nasturtiums in a sunny spot without too much fertility. They will thrive in poorer soil. They grow readily from seed which can be sown directly into the garden from early spring. It will take approximately two to three months for flowering after germination. Once established nasturtiums will self seed and re-emerge from year to year with no effort on your part.

Fennel

Parsnips

Mesclun and Lettuce

Rocket

Herbs (parsley, chervil, chives and spring onions)

Citrus fruits (lemons, limes, mandarins, oranges and grapefruits)

VEGE OF THE MONTH: BROCCOLI Broccoli can be planted all year round. Plant small numbers of seedlings every few weeks to keep a constant supply. Try a sprouting broccoli variety like “tasty stems” or “purple sprouting”. These varieties will produce side shoots for you to harvest over a longer period than the traditional single head varieties.

SOUPER BOWL BROCCOLI SOUP INGREDIENTS: •

2 tablespoons butter

1 large onion

700 grams fresh broccoli

1 large potato

4 cups of stock (vegetable or chicken)

Salt & pepper – try Wild Rimu Rimu’s Kelp Salt & Bush Pepper

Italian parsley

For a vegan option use olive oil as a substitute for the butter. INSTRUCTIONS:

Broccoli plants are big feeders. They like rich, fertile and welldrained soil and will grow best in an alkaline soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Adding lime to your bed in advance of planting will help increase alkalinity. Plant good sized broccoli seedlings 40 to 50cm apart and compress the soil around the seedling when you plant.

BROCCOLI - HOW TO HARVEST A broccoli plant will produce 8 to 12 weeks from transplant. For the single heading varieties wait for the central head to get as large as possible before cutting with a sharp knife. The sprouting varieties will produce a larger central head first before producing smaller heads on side sprouts.

Cut the broccoli florets and stems into small pieces. Peel and chop potatoes into quarters. Dice the onion.

Over a medium-high heat, melt the butter in a pot. Add the onion, and sauté for five minutes until the onion is translucent.

Add stock, broccoli, potato, salt and black pepper. Bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes or until the vegetables are soft.

Set aside a cup of liquid from heated vegetable broth.

Blend the soup using a hand blender to your desired consistency. Add in a bit of the stock if necessary – a little at a time.

Serve hot topped with a twig of Italian parsley and some fresh bread.

COASTAL DESIGN Renowned for her stunning interiors and significant achievements in the design industry, Natalie Du Bois from Du Bois Design, took great pleasure in the task of transforming a 1970s holiday bach, in the seaside town of Leigh, into a more contemporary and easily liveable space. Words Milly Nolan

Natalie’s design work included reconfiguring and modernising the kitchen, laundry room, living and dining areas with full interior specification. A few challenges she had to work around were that the existing kitchen was dark and had a very low, sloped ceiling with an even lower structural beam running across the room, which Natalie raided and hid in the ceiling cavity. Also, the rear deck was only accessible through the laundry, which meant it wasn’t being used as much. Given the home has beautiful sea views, Natalie re-oriented the kitchen to allow the vistas to be enjoyed, and have better flow. A number of design elements were introduced

to maintain the ‘mid-century yet minimalist’ aesthetic, such as the curves to the corners of the stone-clad island, oak flooring and the textured, bead-blasted wood grain cabinetry. The end result is so impressive that the kitchen design won five awards in the 2021 NKBA Design Awards and was also the Gold Pin winner at the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards in 2021 – a highly coveted award in the design industry. Her renovation has now also been recognised internationally as a finalist in the SBID International Design Awards for her entry in the KBB Design (Kitchen, Bedroom, Bathroom) category. Evaluated by

a panel of distinguished, industry-leading experts for design functionality, innovation, creativity and technical execution, an SBID Award is considered one of the most coveted accolades for design excellence. To complete the final stage of judging, the public are now invited to vote for their favouritefinalist design - accounting for an impressive 30% of the overall results. To show your support for local design, help Natalie put New Zealand on the international map, by casting your vote for her ‘Coastal Holiday Bach’ at the following website before 24 August. www.sbidawards.com

FROM MOUNTAIN TO SURF After spending a magical summer in Mangawhai, Queenstown locals Mark Anderson and Sam Ivey, decided that the relaxed way of living and pumping surf was something that they, and their three young kids, needed more of in their life. Words Shannen Frear | Photos Sam Ivey Film & Photos

The family had already spent time in

sweet spot to settle and build - the positive community, coastal culture and younger

The property offered a rural location with

plenty of blossoming fruit trees, a great backyard for the kids, a large deck perfect for afternoon barbeques and was only a quick two-minute drive to the village. And so without further ado, the young family packed up their belongings in Queenstown and set about turning the 90 square metre bach into ‘home sweet home’.

Bringing a slice of Queenstown to Mangawhai, the couple wanted to create an alpine aesthetic. To do so, they utilised mostly unprocessed materials for the renovation, including plywood for the kitchen and cabinets, polished concrete flooring and corrugated timber for the interior. Simplicity and practicality were important, “we wanted to keep it simple, and not over complicate things”, says Mark. Mark and Sam’s favourite feature of the build is the loft. A pull-out ladder leads into a cozy tranquil nook, where visitors can sleep and soak up the beautiful view. THE HUB OF THE HOME Citywide Kitchens consists of a husband and wife team, Pete and Rachael, who have collectively been in the kitchen design business for the last 50 years. Words Kate Moore

Pete and Rachael believe that every space, no matter its shape or size, has the potential to become unique, harmonious and beautiful. They have the expertise and knowledge to design, manufacture and install dreamy, practical kitchens from Langs Beach to Auckland and everywhere in between. A third family member also shows up to work daily - Harlee, their Golden Retriever - whose job it is to greet everyone and receive as many pats and cuddles as possible. Pete, like his father and grandfather before him, is a qualified cabinet maker. He has been designing and installing kitchens for the last 30 years and brings systematic and

logical aspects to the team. Rachael, who started her career in the food industry, also studied Interior Design, complementing their joint venture. Rachael says she’s the big picture one who designs a kitchen, sells it to the customer and then gives it to Pete to create. Pete sometimes turns around and asks, “how?”, with which Rachael replies, “you can do it!”. Using their combined knowledge, they can supply kitchens for nearly any budget but will not drop below their high standard of craftsmanship. Rachael relishes a challenge and prides herself on listening to what the clients want and matching them with their perfect kitchen.

She understands that sometimes you need to “step back from the design for the ideas to flow,” she says. One of her favourite transformations is the kitchen featured here. Being a renovation, she had to work within the given parameters: a not-so-typical octagon with a load-bearing post in the middle and various sloping ceiling panels. It wasn’t until she relaxed with a glass of wine that the eureka moment hit. She said out loud, “I can flip the kitchen!”. Using materials such as suede leather concrete for the bench tops and charred oak timber for the cabinetry, created a stunning, moody and sleek design. This kitchen also features a secret butler’s pantry whereby bifold doors

open to reveal a hidden space where everyday objects can be concealed. Pete and Rachael both pride themselves on communication and customer service and believe this is what is helping the business flourish. Every job has the goal of “wanting to leave feeling amazing.” Their personalised one-on-one service, combined with only using New Zealandmade quality products, means that they have built not just solid kitchens but also a solid rapport with the community. Their business is thriving from word of mouth, making it pretty unique. www.facebook.com/kitchenscitywide www.citywidekitchens.co.nz

NO SMALL PADDOCK It’s a long, colourful and winding road from being a top-end insurance underwriting executive in one of the great cities of Europe to a lovely greensward block in Omaha. Words Alex Stone | Photo Lesley Stone

This via a challenging relationship break-up, an innovative catering concept and company, the Covid years, the discovery of and absorption in the ethos of Human Design, another successful entrepreneurial start-up - and now writing a book on the dynamics of dating. And that’s only part of the interesting life of Nadia Hicks. Buckle up to hear the rest. But first, let’s hear it from Nadia herself: “I guess you could say I treat life like an energetic game - using different activities and ventures as my way of figuring things out on a spiritual level.” Nadia returned to Godzone from travelling three years ago. After the years of corporate life, she was determined to start her own business, but “I didn't really know what it was going to be, but I set out on a mission to discover it.” And simultaneously, she “went through (for lack of a better term) a spiritual awakening of sorts.” Nadia had always wanted to work with food and had a food photography blog, so she started a platter and grazing business called Bread My Butter. It’s still going strong, despite the setback of Covid. At the same time, Nadia discovered a system called Human Design. “I was completely captivated by it. It seemed to sum me up perfectly. Human Design is a modality that

combines astrology, the I Ching, the chakra system and quantum physics - it gives you your energetic blueprint and how your energy best moves through the world based on your exact time and date of birth.”

Now here, clientele - mostly in New Zealand - the business has the potential to expand worldwide. And it's doing that, with more and more clients from the USA. Who are they? “People in personal crossroads situations, looking for answers.”

Nadia notes that Human Design shows our potential as human beings - who we’re supposed to be. “But we’re conditioned. We’re brought up to believe there’s only a one-way ticket to success. But we can be liberated from that.”

“Nowadays, I primarily help people with polarity embodiment and detangling from the vicious webs of diet culture, but energetic attunement is still a major piece of the proverbial pie.”

Here comes the really interesting bit. Nadia used her business ventures as “practical guinea pigs to see if Human Design had merit or not. And it actually did. When I followed the advice I gained from my chart, things went in my favour, and when I went against it, things went awry.” This period of brave self-experimentation went on for about 18 months. Using Human Design principles, Nadia learned how to read charts professionally. She says with some candour, “I practiced on unsuspecting friends, family members and dating experiences. When Covid hit, I could no longer run my catering business, so I decided to pour this free time I had into the Human Design side of things and started to do readings professionally as I can do them online.”

As if that is not all enough, Nadia is also writing a book on the energetics of dating through astrology, based on her applied knowledge. Its working title is Dating the Zodiac. It’s all about “discovering compatibility, how love works, and finding yourself through dating. “I’ve noticed a massive shift in dating,’ she reflects. And true to form, Nadia has set about reacting positively to that. “You start to realise that our conditioning keeps us small, in a small kind of paddock. People settling for what they think is the best they’ll get.” But not so for Nadia Hicks. No small paddock for her – or anyone who gets to know her. nads.hicks@gmail.com www.facebook.com/nadia.hicks.77

ZOE QU THE MILLION DOLLAR SNAPPER LADY All marine scientists agree that at only 547 ha, Goat Island Marine Reserve is too small. But still, Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve (its official name) has taught us a lot since it was established as New Zealand’s first marine reserve in 1975. Words Alex Stone | Photo Lesley Stone

Enter Zoe Qu, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Auckland. Last year, along with joint authors Simon Thrush, Darren Parson and Nicolas Lewis, they published two ground-(ocean?)- breaking research papers. These papers revealed the extraordinary benefits of Goat Island Marine Reserve in both economic and ecosystem services terms. And that’s just from one species. In short, her study is based on the Agnes Le Port’s 2017 study that 10.6% of snapper juveniles (outside the reserve) are genetically related to their parents (adult snapper) in the Leigh Marine Reserve. She firstly estimated the economic value of this recruitment effect and found that their value to our economy amounts to millions of dollars annually. I feel the need to pace a dozen exclamation marks here, but Zoe, with the contribution from other ecologists, in a true scientific manner, keeps me real. The first paper is titled Economic valuation of the snapper recruitment effect from a well-established temperate no-take marine reserve on adjacent fisheries. In the abstract (the only part of scientific papers this simple farm boy can understand before getting lost), it reads: “Empirical evidence shows that 10.6% of newly settled juvenile snappers sampled up to 55 km outside of the MPA were the offspring of adult snappers from the MPA [Goat Island]. “This suggests a significant boost to the commercial fishery of $NZ 1.49 million catch landing value per annum and $NZ 3.21 million added from recreational fishing activity associated spending per annum. These values all come from the recruitment effects associated with one species, from only 0.08% of the marine

DISCOVER

space in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. “The economic valuation of this marine reserve’s snapper recruitment effect demonstrated $NZ 9.64 million in total spending accruing to recreational fishing per annum and $NZ 4.89 million in total output to commercial fisheries annually.” Zoe explains the international value of this research: “This study is the first estimation of the economic valuation of the recruitment effects from a wellestablished temperate no-take MPA.” The paper was published in the international journal Marine Policy. With typical modesty - and with due scientific caution - Zoe reminded me that while the models for the research may be ‘inexact,’ the deductions made from them were sound. In science language: “While MPAs’ ecological benefits are well researched, there are only a few studies that estimate the economic benefits of MPAs to the adjacent fisheries. Currently, methodologies for measuring the economic benefits flowing from MPAs are underdeveloped.” To further explain their research methods, Zoe and her team published a followup paper Evaluating decision-support tools for monetary valuation of ecosystem services for Marine Protected Areas. Perhaps to help us non-scientists understand, the highlights of this paper are bulleted: • O nly four out of the 12 most frequently used coastal and marine ecosystem (CME) services tools incorporate monetary value assessments for marine protected areas (MPAs)

•M ost CME service tools can only indirectly help build monetary awareness. •T he monetary value measurement of CME services for MPAs is best based on the biophysical production of services in MPAs. If you want to get into the detail, Zoe and her team write: “We argue that the monetary value measurement of CME services for MPAs should be based on the biophysical production of services in MPAs rather than from subjective human perspectives (e.g., Willingness to Pay surveys). This requires transdisciplinary knowledge connecting ecology and economy to produce an ecology-based monetary value measurement. We suggest that developing this novel method could help to better understand the values of CME services for MPAs and make a positive influence on marine conservation.” This is published in the journal Ocean & Coastal Management. Both papers were published in December 2021 and can easily be found online. They have kept the marine conservation circles of New Zealand - and the world - buzzing ever since. Beyond her academic interests, Zoe likes swimming, snorkelling, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, gardening, drawing, sewing, and cooking in what spare time she has. But there’s a provisor: “Sorry, I am not a scuba diver because I am from a desert (Inner Mongolia of China) where water is actually lacking in my hometown, but I am working on it.” All goes to show the value of curious scientists like Zoe Qu and her fellow authors. Good on them. https://profiles.auckland.ac.nz/qmen345

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD SEND OFF When the phrase COVID-19 was added to our lexicon over two years ago, it’s fair to say our lives changed forever. One of the most impacted rites of passage was the ability to gather with family and friends to farewell those that had passed, to be able to celebrate and mark their lives and start the grieving process.

As restrictions have eased, we are able to reinstate these important life moments, and take time to reshape them to suit our own tastes and preferences. Lily Watson joined besoul funerals in April as funeral director and manager and has a passion for caring for families which has remained constant from when she first entered the industry eight years ago. “I had a very brief experience with the funeral industry in 2007 when my children were young, and it was a bit of a handful then,” smiles Lily. “But I kept that burning desire to return to that occupation and in 2014 an opportunity arose at Forrest Funeral Services in Browns Bay.” That passion paid off when two years later Lily became fully qualified as a registered funeral director and was awarded the Highest Marks in the Theory of Funeral Directing Award for that year. Lily explains why she feels funerals are vital. “Helping families navigate through planning a service for their loved one is important as there is only one chance to get it right. The service should reflect the

energy of that person, as well as those who wish to both mourn and celebrate them. Just as each of us is different, so too is the way in which people choose to celebrate or grieve, whether it be secular, religious, colourful, sombre, publicly, or privately.” New Zealand has a rich cultural heritage and it’s been a privilege and an education to work with different cultures and belief systems over the years. What may have been the accepted, traditional funeral in the past may not be the chosen path now, so having the right funeral director who can adapt and help guide through that process can make all the difference. “I love hearing the stories of people’s lives, and how they have touched those around them. It is a reminder each day that we need to live our best lives, that love is eternal and the memories live on.” Living in sunny Waiwera, Lily lives life to the full, spending time with her daughter and granddaughters in nearby Puhoi, as well as walking, fishing and enjoying the beaches in our beautiful area. She also spends extra time with husband Peter, as he has taken a change of direction

from his background in psychology, after many years working in mental health and disability and is assisting Lily at besoul. I feel blessed with the opportunity to manage and develop this beautiful new funeral home, and to offer a modern approach for families. We are committed to serving families with professionalism, empathy, and ultimately provide the best for them. www.besoulfunerals.co.nz 09 422 2534 hello@besoul.co.nz ADVERTORIAL

A GENEROUS DONATION Volunteer search and rescue charity Coastguard New Zealand has been given a substantial $50,000 donation from the sale of a majestic waterfront property – complete with its own working lighthouse. Words Milly Nolan

The 26-hectare north-facing headland property at Cape Rodney on Leigh Peninsula, just north of Auckland, comprises some 1.5 kilometres of coastline real estate – with exclusive access to its own private beaches. It sold earlier this year for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. Bordering the Goat Island Marine Reserve land, the clifftop property sits on a headland which separates Pakiri Beach to the north, and Omaha Beach to the south. At the tip of the landholding is a working lighthouse which has been a flashing beacon since 1967. Producing a beam of LED light projecting some 10 nautical miles out into the Hauraki Gulf, the fully automated solar-powered lighthouse is administered by Maritime New Zealand. The cliff-top, lifestyle block property was sold through Bayleys Matakana salesperson, Kellie Bissett, who came up with the innovative idea to connect her philanthropic vendors with Coastguard New Zealand as a way of giving back to the community they had lived in for so long, as well as generating buyer interest both domestically and internationally. Following the successful sale of the headland, owners Neil Naran and Shirley-Anne Williams, made good on their word – visiting Coastguard New Zealand’s headquarters in Auckland for an official hand-over of their donation. “Being on the coast, and with the lighthouse on our headland, we always had a very close affinity with the sea. And part of that was appreciating the outstanding work Coastguard New Zealand does protecting boaties,” says Neil. “Having seen the lifesaving work which Coastguard New Zealand has undertaken supporting and promoting boaties in need as well as the coastal environment, it was an easy decision for us to offer financial support,” says Neil. “Shirley-Anne and I had owned the Cape Rodney block for quite some time, and it had obviously appreciated in value over the years, so we felt comfortable giving some back to the community.” Coastguard New Zealand chief executive officer Callum Gillespie said: “Coastguard is delighted to receive this generous gift. The lighthouse at Leigh has kept mariners safe for decades and the gift to Coastguard arising from the sale of the property continues this tradition and will help save lives at sea.” www.bayleys.co.nz | kellie.bissett@bayleys.co.nz
