Miss Lolo is creating waves on the designer furniture scene. It all began back in 2013 when celebrity fashion stylist, Tamzyn Adding, was frustrated by the sea of beige she saw everywhere in furnishings. Not one to rest on her laurels she began buying old retro pieces on TradeMe, stripping them back to the frame, and having them reupholstered with texture and colour. Her goal? To create furniture that blurred the lines between the furniture and art. Art has always been at the forefront of Tamzyn’s life. She has an honours degree in design and comes from an arty family. “They’re all either practicing artists or art teachers,” she says. “I actually wanted to be a doctor, but when I spoke with my parents about it they said ‘you’d be bored, go to art school.’ “ “When I began Miss Lolo people thought I was coming from an environmental angle, but the crux of it was I couldn’t make furniture so I made use of the old frames,” she says. When she started a Facebook page that quickly grew to 10,000 fans she knew she was onto something. “I met with shoe designer Kathryn Wilson and she introduced me to The Icehouse who run business growth courses for start ups and have investors known as Ice Angels,” says Tamzyn. “But I felt a lot of pressure to manufacture in Asia so I stepped right back.” Auckland businessman and investor Mario Vulinovich - an Ice Angel - kept in touch from time to time and eventually became Tamzyn’s business partner. He also helped pair her up with Keenan Interiors. “They do high end commercial interiors like Botswana Butchery and Rodd & Gunn as well as bespoke interior manufacturing,” says Tamzyn. Alan Keenan became Tamzyn’s second business partner, which led to the launch of her brand new collection ‘Sugarplums and Sherbet’. Beautiful pastel coloured velvets imported from Europe and white American Oak trims with hints of copper are the hallmarks of the covetable range. “I’ve always designed colour block Wingbacks in bright colours but I’d been wanting to do them in pastels,” says Tamzyn. “It was pure fluke they’re coming into vogue right now.”
Tamzyn (right) with Bridget Jackson, CEO of Gynecological. Tamzyn created this wingback chair as a fundraiser for the organization.
With a rapidly growing fan base the goal for Miss Lolo is world domination. Next stop the United States and California along with a presence at the New York Furniture Fair next year. Right now though, Tamzyn has a more local project taking centre stage. She’s recently moved with her husband Ben from Waimauku to Matakana with her four daughters: Bowie, 3, Cedar, 4, and 9-year-old twins Nikita and Caitlin. “We’ve got a beautiful lifestyle block but the house is a total re-do,” says Tamzyn. Luckily Ben owns a construction company. Watch this space.

A striking new home in Point Wells is a stunning example of visual impact and classic beauty.
HANNAH
KITCHEN
these two masters Debbie has created a home that takes feature pieces, both old and new, and combines rich patterns and textures, with a focus on black and white and the natural textures of wood and cane, to create a sumptuous classic feel with a 21st Century twist.
Owners, Debbie and Mike, originally intended it as a holiday home, but a job opportunity in the area meant that it became home base.
White wooden sarked ceilings are possibly the most beautiful feature of the building, and captivate the eye as the sinuous curves move from the exterior to the interior smoothly. The spacious kitchen and living areas provide everything a foodie and entertainer could wish for with a chefs oven, water outlook and an outdoor fire soon to be surrounded by a growing grapevine.
Designed by architect Adrian Robinson of Adrian Robinson and Associates and built by Kevin Pyle Builders Ltd it’s the epitome of casual elegance. Opulent and beautiful are fitting adjectives, but it’s not so perfect that you can’t completely unwind with a glass of wine by the pool in the summer months or snuggle up in your PJs during winter. Debbie and Mike’s vision was for a space that would be rich in open spaces. Indoor and outdoor flow was a priority along with perfect craftsmanship and an emphasis on quality.
Debbie’s created a cosy and homely vibe with an eclectic mix of pieces the couple have carefully collected over the years. Examples include a rug hanging on a hallway wall, classic black and white wedding photographs sitting alongside contemporary pacific paintings, and an old iron which makes an intriguing door handle.
Outdoors, white painted brick meets black details and is an excellent example of a modern recreation of the classic New Zealand villa.
Lovingly nurtured from its inception, this is a home that’s been well thought out and as a result is a beautiful, covetable space.
Indoors, the styling influences most prominent are those of Australian designer Greg Natale and American design icon, Ralph Lauren. Inspired by 10

Raw food is garnering an enormous following around the globe. It’s innovative, delicious and good for you. We spent five minutes with Rachael Drinnan of Raw Eats, raw food chef extraordinaire and Matakana markets regular. She lives with her husband Chris and their three small children aged 2, 4, and 5 on a beautiful farm in Whangaripo Valley. How did you get into making raw food Rachael? Last summer I entered the Whangaripo Valley Wild Food Festival with a raw, gluten free, vegan and no refined sugars Wild Blackberry and Coconut Cheesecake. I didn’t win the overall competition, but I did get a special mention for entering a ‘raw’ dish. My initial inspiration came from the positive feedback and praise I got from that cheesecake! Why are you passionate about it? I enjoy both making and eating raw food. I love creating different dishes, and seeing other people devouring them, especially when they can’t believe they’re putting raw unbaked goodness into their bodies. markets to meet the local producers and buy their food. The visitors love learning the back-stories. I also show them the Community Garden we have in Matakana and we’ll compare produce from the supermarket with fresh produce from the market and the gardens. There’s no comparison in terms of freshness. Then we come back here and I show them how to prepare a three-course meal using what they’ve bought.”
Mark Griffiths has a passion for food. Fresh food. Local food. Delicious food. Ever since the 1970s the UK-born chef has cooked all over the world giving him a considerable expertise in the culinary arts. Thirty years ago, while working on a cruise ship, he met a passenger called Carmel. The Kiwi girl won his heart, became his wife, and led him to our shores. The pair spent time getting away to both Omaha and Waiheke, as Carmel’s parents owned a bach in each spot. Mark found himself more at home in the Omaha region than Waiheke Island. “I think it could be a little more manicured, a little more English than Waiheke,” says Carmel.
The Gourmet Within features what is known as an incubator commercial kitchen, which means food made within can be on-sold. Mark will hire it out for those who wish to make use of the facility. He also makes The Gourmet Within Macarons, Turkish Dukkah, and Paleo Muesli for Ooooby. org (out of our own backyards), an enterprise whose mission it is to repair our food system and bring us back to a more natural, more wholesome, more local food supply.
A decade ago, while looking for a 10-acre block of land no more than an hour’s drive from Auckland, Matakana became home. The couple weren’t intending to live there until retirement, but the idea of a caravan on a block of land soon gave way to the house and vineyard they purchased.
Whether it’s a food tour, cooking class, (surprisingly affordable) private dining experience or even a commercial kitchen for your own enterprise you’re after, The Gourmet Within can deliver.
Mark now divides his time between lecturing at AUT and running food tours and cooking classes from The Gourmet Within.

add a handful of greens. Kale, spinach and parsley are the easiest to find. Blend together in a high-speed blender until smooth, add some ice and you’ve got health and vitality in a glass.
As parents we have the huge responsibility of “showing” our children how to eat well. How they eat and what they eat is learned at home. Eating is social. It’s the experience, fun, stories and laughter that go along with it that enrich the experience. Food should be an adventure; the more interesting it is for children the better. Variety is key, next time you’re shopping pick up something you haven’t tried before. One new vegetable could make a fun game!
Sprouting Health Sprouting foods is fun. Try: lentils, mung beans, sesame or sunflower seeds.Soak them in an Agee jar or similar for a few hours. Drain off the water. (Kingseeds.co.nz sell sprouting lids that fit these jars perfectly.) Put to one side out of direct light. Rinse twice a day and drain well. After three to five days you should get edible sprouts.
Get Them To Help Include children in the preparation; it’s exciting for them. I love feeding children brussel sprouts. They’ve often never even heard of them so when they’re asked to help prepare them they’re fascinated. Cooked perfectly with some good quality salt and a dash of olive oil I’ve seen huge quantities wolfed down by children who don’t know they are considered ‘yuck’ by a huge proportion of the population.
Lastly, cut the sugar. If you want to give them treats, a small amount of good quality dark chocolate is far better then a candy cane. The keys to less junk: • Offer kids a variety of foods • Get them involved with the preparation • Eat together and have fun • Cut sugar and processed foods down or out
Smoothie Power Smoothies are another fabulous trick. Start with fruit – maybe one banana and one or two others such as pear, apple, feijoas, persimmon, figs – and

Wagons
Jon Toogood
WORDS BY CLINTON HOWLETT
WORDS
Sweaty, hairy and ooh-so-magnetic – that’s the hard working lads of Wagons.
BY
CLINTON
HOWLETT
Jon Toogood is well known as the hard rocking frontman of legendary Kiwi rock group Shihad, so when I heard he was doing a solo performance at Leigh Sawmill I was intrigued.
Those lucky enough to make it out to Leigh Sawmill to see them were left spellbound and hanging on every carefully crafted lyric, note and beat blasted out by the Aussie rockers. A fusion of alt country rock and roll with a hint of southern blues, the guys have crafted a sound unlike anything else. That said, you can definitely hear influences of great live musicians like Nick Cave, Elvis and Tex Perkins.
Many established musicians try similar acoustic sets and can’t pull it off. However, Jon Toogood proved why he is a Kiwi household name and is worthy of being inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. Toogood performed classic Shihad tracks along with covers from Th’ Dudes, David Bowie and Split Endz. He was more than willing to express his love of music, life, and family and friends through a platform that leaves musicans truly exposed. Heartfelt performances like this don’t come along often, but when they do you count yourself lucky to be part of it. The audio quality wasn’t always there but that adds to the charm and humour of live music, and nothing beats getting on a personal level with true artists.
Henry Wagons, the bands front man, whipped the crowd up into a frenzy like some kind of acid fuelled Evangelical preacher in minutes. He left us unable to abandon the journey of the performance until the last song rang out. Definitely not some mass-produced bubblegum pop group that rely on repetitive earworms and over-the-top technical stage productions, Wagons are a real live band for real music fans. If you missed them, the next time Wagons are in town I recommend taking the time to see them live and renew your faith in good old fashioned alt country rock and roll. MISS YOU ALREADY
R AT I N G
3.5 / 5
Miss You Already is the story of two women who have been best friends since they were young. Milly (Toni Collette) has grown up to have a successful professional career along with a husband and children. Meanwhile Jess (Drew Barrymore) is still trying to learn how to feel comfortable in her own skin. When Milly is diagnosed with cancer, the dichotomy changes and Jess needs to become the stronger of the two. The film is both funny and sad. It pulls the viewer from laughter to tears and back again. While it might be tempting to write off the film as being geared toward women, anyone can learn from and be moved by this movie. Miss You Already plays at Matakana Cinemas from October 22nd.
THE WALK
It was 1974 and street-performing Frenchman Philippe Petit fulfilled his dream of stringing a tightrope across the Twin Towers and walking between the two. The 2008 film, Man on Wire, covered this very illegal scheme as a documentary while The Walk adapts the story into a narrative film.
R AT I N G
4/5
Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s portrayal of Petit is on point. Petit is a man who lives with his head (literally and figuratively) in the clouds and feels like he could be a character in a Michel Gondry film. Gordon-Levitt captures his amazement with the world beautifully. The heart of the film is a caper, but there is also an underlying love story that drags the story from the action a little. The rest of the film makes up for it though. The Walk plays at Matakana Cinemas from October 22nd
