Many mothers want to buy products that are good for their family, and kind on the Earth, but often find it hard to know which products to use. Earth Mama is a locally owned online eco store, now run from home by Jaimee Browne, in the company of her husband Brendon and 2-year-old daughter, Charli. All Earth Mama products are tried and tested with her own family before being made available for her customers to buy, giving all the Earth Mamas out there the confidence they need to make the best choice for their family and for Mother Earth. www.earthmama.nz www.instagram.com/earthmama.nz

NEW AND SUSTAINABLE BABY CLOTHES Toto&Oz provides handmade clothing for the smallest tamariki. Sick of her own baby growing out of clothes before he had even had a chance to wear them, Toto&Oz was started by stay-athome mum Holly during lockdown. The growwith-me style of the clothes (which fit a much larger size range than traditional store bought clothes) and the use of both upcycled and new textiles combine to create a practical, fashionable and more sustainable alternative to children’s clothing which leaves less of a footprint on Papatūānuku.

A WELLDESIGNED HOMECOMING Most of us take some time to work out what’s important in our lives. For Mangawhai resident Amy Hawke it took a hard-working, jet-setting lifestyle of almost 20 years before she finally came home to “a life-changing" new phase.

Amy Hawke is a Spatial Designer and is the founding partner of Hawke House Event Design, which specialises in the design of bespoke events and environments. Her international portfolio is enviable, servicing some of the world’s finest luxury brands, international sporting events, and also catering to the event needs of both British and Middle Eastern Royalty. But she recently made the unlikely transition from the glitz of London and Dubai to a newly “brought back to life" 1950s former Devonport state house, which now nestles among 400 olive trees in Mangawhai. She lives there with her partner Michael, a construction manager, and their two children, Maia and Koen. Hawke grew up on Auckland’s North Shore and headed overseas soon after qualifying with a Spatial Design degree from AUT. After a spell as a photographic model (spotted by a talent scout while sitting on a London tube train) she was presented with an opportunity to design an extravagant polo event at Knepp Castle in the United Kingdom. From this, her very first event, her career took off.

She has worked internationally in venues like Abbey Road Studios, The Savoy, Arundel Castle and The Armani Hotel, set within the world’s highest tower, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Amy’s business continues to operate in Dubai, the Emirate of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, where she has worked on a plethora of events including Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi. The events are demanding, creatively driven and must be achieved at a breakneck pace with great agility. Amy’s initial intention in returning home was to split time between Aotearoa and her Dubai business, but when the pandemic hit, Amy was forced to adapt. Unable to travel, she now works remotely from Mangawhai and relies on her Dubaibased partner and an established supply chain of event professionals to keep things going on the ground. “Jumping between projects for the Middle East, United Kingdom and New Zealand

makes for an interesting headspace as clients, cultures and also environmental and social responsibilities differ so much between regions", she says. The events industry was badly hit by Covid and the Dubai end of her business just scraped through the worst of the lockdowns as opportunities began to arise in New Zealand. Most recently she worked on America’s Cup activities for host iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and this year’s Matariki Celebrations at Silo Park. During the America’s Cup she had the idea to paint the hapū tohu (logo) on their whenua overlooking the Waitematā. This feature was achieved by event partners Fresh Concept in eco paint and delivered at a huge scale, captured from the air and broadcast across the globe, “a goosebump moment”, she says. Amy Hawke’s iwi is Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, but she had very little contact growing up. A disconnect, she says, “I have quietly carried most of my life”. Now her work on New Zealand soil has been entirely on behalf

of her iwi. Her connection to the hapū and her culture is a recent one and she is in the process of "learning the importance of more spiritually rewarding event objectives” from her whānau and NZ-based peers. “It’s a real privilege to be able to contribute in a small way to some of the hapū public and whānau events. But it’s really a twoway street and I feel like I have so much to gain in terms of learning from the hapū. Their fierce care and protection of people and place is so inspiring to me. It’s a really positive shift and not an exaggeration to call this new phase a bit of a life changer!” Her partner Michael, who has been working on large scale commercial construction in the Middle East is also enjoying the transition to kiwi life on a more intimate scale, carrying out the renovation of their home. Their Mangawhai setting, surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards and bush is a world away from the bright lights of the past two decades, but one this former city girl and her family are entirely content with and grateful for. www.instagram.com/hawke_house www.instagram.com/aim_hawke

NO DOGS LEFT BEHIND Saving Hope is one of those organisations that you wish didn’t have to exist but are incredibly grateful that they do. Janine Hinton and her daughter Anita set up the registered charity in 2017 to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abused and neglected puppies. Words Leah Botherway | Photos Avedon Photography

When speaking with Janine, you can’t help but feel conflicted about the human race. On the one hand, you have the huge team of volunteers at Saving Hope that spend their spare time ensuring that hundreds of puppies are given the life they deserve. And on the other hand, you have the people that keep the Saving Hope volunteers so busy by abandoning and mistreating dogs. Since its inception in 2017, Saving Hope

has rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed thousands of puppies. They work tirelessly to ensure that no dog is euthanised simply because there is nowhere else for it to go. For Saving Hope, euthanasia is a last resort and only for exceptional circumstances where the dog is suffering or traumatised beyond veterinary intervention. Or, as Janine puts it, “The minute they take a breath, they deserve a chance at life”.

The Apple Basket is a textile store that sells 100% cotton and linen fabrics, yarn (wool, alpaca, possum, linen and cotton yarns), embroidery threads and haberdashery. I run classes quilting/ patchwork, hand embroidery, dress making, textile gift card making, bag making, knitting, Pfaff sewing machine classes on site and we have a website with most items in the online store.

SPOTLIGHT

Saving Hope has between 200 and 300 puppies in their care at any given time, and Janine is passionate about each and every one of them; “I do this because I love them so much”, she says. Together with an army of vets, volunteers and foster families, every single one of these puppies is nurtured back to health and is eventually found a family that will provide them with a safe and loving home.

To say Janine is a busy woman is an understatement. When she’s not collecting, feeding or walking dogs, visiting vets or finding and liaising with foster families, she’s working her full-time job running her busy trucking company from home. A typical day for Janine begins at 6am, and all day she will juggle responsibilities for her trucking business and Saving Hope. Her day often ends at 1am the following morning, when she curls up to sleep only to get up in a few hours and do it all over again. Luckily for Janine, she gets a huge helping hand from her granddaughter Tilly and a fantastic team of volunteers who donate their time and efforts to give these puppies a better life. Be it helping out around the property, socialising the puppies, cleaning, fundraising, or fostering, Saving Hope wouldn’t be able to exist without them. While Janine’s lifestyle block provides a wonderful temporary home and rehabilitation area for the puppies, it’s her dream to one day buy a property that is solely dedicated to Saving Hope and is a sanctuary for the rescued pups. Philanthropy also runs in Janine’s family; her daughter Anita runs a separate charity – I Got Your Back Pack (IGYBP). IGYBP works in support of Women’s Refuge and provides

emergency care packs filled with practical and essential items for women and children who have suffered domestic violence. It is a dream of both Janine and Anita to combine their two charities so that they can provide safe housing for domestic abuse victims on the same property as Saving Hope. This way, they can ensure that everyone, including their pets, can be brought to safety. With substantial annual vet bills, the cost of vaccinations and spaying, food, shelter and cleaning, monetary donations are the most effective way to do your bit to help Saving Hope continue to rescue puppies. Every single cent that is donated is used by the charity to assist in caring for the puppies until they find a permanent home. If you’re not in a position to donate money, there are many other ways that you can help out. For example, you could donate old blankets and sheets, wet wipes and cleaning products, or even drop off a pile of empty toilet rolls for the puppies to play with. If you are interested in donating, volunteering, fostering or adopting, any assistance is gratefully received, and you can find all information on their website. www.facebook.com/savinghopenz www.savinghope.co.nz

SUMMER SCENES Originally from Auckland, Emma Sarney moved to Magical Mangawhai two and a half years ago. A talented photographer who has been documenting her families journey via Instagram. We chat with Emma on her photography passion and life in Mangawhai Words + Photos Emma Sarney

We were drawn to the beautiful beaches and the amazing community, and since arriving everyone has welcomed us with open arms. We are so proud and thankful to be able to call Mangawhai home. My daughter, Indie, who has just turned five, loves it here. She lives at the beach come summer; we are always having to drag her out of the water when it’s time to go home. Photography has always been a passion of mine, my camera goes everywhere with me. Since having Indie I have loved being able to capture all the candid moments of her childhood. Although like any kid she’s not always in the mood for photos, but when she is, it’s magic! The majority of my photos are taken at the beach simply because it is such a beautiful backdrop to work with; the rolling waves, the salty sea air and sandy toes, it can’t get much better than that! My goal is to start up my own photography business in the new year, specialising in personal lifestyle photography. I want to be able to create an environment that is laid back and comfortable so you can let your best self shine through! I would love to be able to tell the story of your family in a way that beautifully captures the heart of your home, the connection you share and the little things you love. I will be posting updates on my personal Instagram account, alternatively you can email me. www.instagram.com/x_emmarose_ e.sarney@outlook.com

SUMMER

CAPTURING THE PERFECT BEACH MEMORIES When photographing at the beach, lighting can be tricky, especially in the middle of the day when the sunlight is at its harshest. Your photos can easily end up looking overexposed. Here are some tips and tricks to capturing some stunning beach images this summer. Words + Photos Emma Sarney

Beach Photography Tips And Tricks: •

If there is shade, make use of it.

Try to keep the sun behind your child/ren so you are able to produce nice, even light across their face without harsh shadows and squinty eyes.

Golden hour also makes for particularly beautiful images, as the sun is soft and leaves a gorgeous golden glow. Golden hour is usually one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset.

Always make sure the horizon line is straight (although you can also fix this in the editing process).

A lot of the time our kids are so interested in exploring everything around them, so don’t worry when they don’t want to sit still and smile for the camera. Try following them around as they explore their surroundings; they may be feeling the salty water, the gritty sand between their toes or collecting beautiful shells. These natural candid moments always make for the best images and memories!

Last of all, make sure you have fun!

A BIRD’S EYE VIEW Wandering Mangawhai beach at low tide, you may be lucky enough to stumble across a space filled with circles and squiggly lines, creating a large artwork in the sand. Words Kate Moore

Carlos Eduardo Bourscheid is the sand

artist responsible for this intriguing work.

Originally hailing from Brazil, he moved to

New Zealand 13 years ago and has travelled extensively around the country. Upon arrival, he ventured to the South Island specifically for the mountains as they provided him with a “peaceful and safe place for his

soul and mind to rest.” After seven years, he moved North and has since given his

heart to the beach; he admits he “can now see that it can be vast and extreme. And

just like the mountains can make you feel

small – but good small.” Carlos adores his

current adopted residence. “Mangawhai has welcomed me with open arms. And amongst

the beautiful nature and people, I have found myself touching base, once again, with the thing called imagination, creativity, self-

expression, exposure and love for sharing good vibes.”

Carlos first discovered his talent while walking the beach. “It was a beautiful rainy day. The tide was low, matching my energy and selfconfidence. I was overthinking things.” As he walked, he found a smooth piece of driftwood and a perfect clearing of clean, compact, lowtide sand. As there was no one on the beach, he had nothing to be shy about, so he started drawing in the sand and imagined how it might look to a seagull flying above him. After an hour or so, the tide reclaimed the sand and, therefore, his beautiful artwork, and he turned his back and walked away, relaxed and free. Carlos explains that he wasn’t sure if “it was the rain washing away my problems, the noise of the sea or the sandy feet, but I was at peace in my mind.” Carlos has returned to the beach many times, nowadays with a garden rake to create his art, and he enjoys discussing it with any passers-by. A friend suggested that he use a piece of string to make perfect circles. Still, Carlos prefers

his method; although it is less precise, “the beauty (for me) is using the imagination, the vision, trying to perfect with your own eyes and mind. It’s good for the mind to quiet and focus.” Carlos admits there is no planning in his creations, although not for trying. He instead allows his emotions to take over. “If I am in a good mood, the piece is bigger, as I stay longer and I can add details.” His favourite piece consisted of five turtles. He placed them so that as the tide encroached, it would look as if they were returning to the sea, gradually, with each lap of the waves. After spending hours creating these gritty masterpieces, you would think there would be sadness in seeing something so beautiful disappear. Philosophically, Carlos concludes and says, “beauty is not in being permanent. You just go with the flow.” www.instagram.com/carlos_bourscheid

A NEW HOME FOR JOSEPH TAYLOR HOMEWARES Angela Chamberlain, of Joseph Taylor Homewares, is absolutely rapt with her new location beside the Pippi Gallery in the heart of Mangawhai Village. "To be trading alongside all these wonderful businesses has been a great move for us and the community support and feedback has been wonderful", she says. "Situated in Grannies Mangawhai icon, Barbara Hockenhull‘s home, it’s been truly magic having many of her friends through our doors, and commented that she would love to have seen a business like Joseph Taylor Homewares go into it. We feel that we are surrounded with her light and love every day which makes it even more special and a beautiful energy and space to show off our wares", Angela says. "After two years operating and the arrival of our sixth container with lots of surprises, and never before seen pieces. When curating we only buy a couple of the bigger furniture items so if you do find something you love you are best to nab it on the spot", Angela says. "After an incredibly challenging year and shipping costs going through the roof, we are

still going. With the incredible loyal support of our locals and beyond we can keep a small business like ours growing. To bring a slice of Southeast Asia to our community is a lot of fun and we are so grateful to all our customers",

Angela says. "We hope you have safe and happy holidays and look forward to seeing you in store!" 1C Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai 0275 606 416

WOOD WHITTLING AND SLINGSHOT Things to gather: • • • • • • • •

Vegetable peeler or whittling knife Gloves Pruning secateurs Fresh green Y-shaped and straight sticks Elastic bands Pom-poms Small piece of fabric Sandpaper (optional)

Collect some branches (not too big) from a living tree using the secateurs, being careful not to damage the tree. Experiment with what you have available and look for straight branches. Start with the peeler or whittling knife in your dominant hand and wear a glove on the other hand to hold the wood. Sit at least two arm lengths away from anyone else and remove the bark by pushing the peeler away from yourself. Once you've experimented with removing the bark from a straight stick you can do the same on a Y-shaped stick and turn it into a slingshot! To do this, attach an elastic band to both sides of a Y-shaped stick. Cut a small piece of fabric and add a hole either side, then thread the elastic through the holes and around the stick. Place pom-poms in the centre of the fabric and pull back to fire!

NATURE MANDALA Things to gather:

Various natural things like leaves, petals, pebbles, shells, feathers and other organic materials of different shapes and sizes

A hoop (optional)

A mandala is a circular structure with a symmetrical pattern made up of different shapes and colours. This is a great activity to do outside. You just need a flat surface and some gathered natural materials. You can use a hoop to give you guidance, but you can also make one without it. Start by making a shape in the middle and continue placing items in a pattern around the centrepiece. Try to make each side the same to keep it symmetrical. Experiment with different patterns and shapes.

4 Horizon View Place, Mangawhai Heads, Kaipara, Northland Luxury house in the sold out Mangawhai Point subdivision and one of the last undeveloped sections in Mangawhai having elevated sea views. The sweeping 150-degree harbour and ocean views are truly breath-taking. Designed by Chow Hill architects with a focus on summer outdoor living, it features an open plan living area with a seamless flow onto 140 sq. metres of ocean facing deck. The build is completed with tasteful interior design and high spec fittings. Lawn, native plants and boulders blend with the neighbouring areas and are low maintenance, making it attractive for young families and holiday homeowners alike. Only a 5-min walk along manicured walkways to both the dog-friendly beach, and the recently discovered and restored ancient Maori Pa site. Just over an hour north of Auckland City, Mangawhai boasts attractive coastal scenery paired with a welcoming community and premium lifestyle. For several years it has been the fastest-growing area in the country, in part due to the proximity to Auckland, a readily accessible boat ramp, popular swimming beach and now the neighbouring No. 1 in NZ ranked Tara iti golf club. Te Arai links, a new two course premium, publicly accessible golf resort will open in 2022, further increasing demand for quality real estate.

GOAT ISLAND MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE The Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre is the University of Auckland’s marine education facility. Perched on the clifftop adjacent to Te Hāwere-a-Maki (Goat Island) and the wider Leigh Marine Reserve, it showcases a wide variety of marine research being undertaken at the University. This is achieved through live exhibits and information displays, with the education team providing hands-on tuition for school groups that interfaces with the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) curriculum. Interactive displays offer visitors the opportunity to examine marine life up close with BIG-Eye microscopes, explore the Hauraki Gulf’s rich marine biodiversity within the living touch tank, partake in miniexperiments and test their marine knowledge with quizzes and activity trails. There is fun and active learning for the whole family! All staff working at the centre are either qualified marine scientists or students undertaking MSc or PhD research, ensuring visitors have the opportunity to engage with active scientists. The centre is open from 10am-4pm on weekends, public and school holidays and daily until 30 April 2022. More information can be found on their website.

SUNGLASSES TO SUIT EVERY FACE In New Zealand, the sun is harsh due to the damage to the ozone layer, allowing in more dangerous ultraviolet rays like UVC. Therefore, UV damage to the eyes is so common in Australasia. For example, a Pterygium also known as Eye web which is a growth on the tissue, is more common in people who spend a lot of time outdoors. The best form of protection is a good pair of sunglasses. Not only will they protect your eye health but for vanity reasons they may also help protect you from premature wrinkles. Also commonly known as “Crows Feet” or if it makes you feel better “Laugh Lines”. So, you may as well make the most of it and go for style as well as protection. Here are a few tips on which sunglasses suit the following face shapes the best. Words Sally Peters

OVAL

SQUARE

People with oval faces are just born lucky. Your forehead and cheek bone structure are usually equally in proportion so if you are one of these people you can pretty much get away with any shape. Like square, rectangular, round and more. Oversized frames usually work the best, but you will suit anything so go for gold.

If you have more of a round face shape, you have softer curves with no distinct width between your forehead, brow, and cheek area, so you would be best to aim for a rectangular shape to sharpen your face shape giving you a thinner, longer appearance. Adding a more distinct shape to your face will give your face more balance. Aim for rectangular, square, aviators, or geometric shapes.

A square face shape often has more defined angles so more rounded frames would work well. Like a round or oval frame. These shapes will soften the face and adding colours will also help to distract the eye away from any hard angles. Try round, cat eye, wayfare, aviators, browline or oval shapes.

A heart shaped face is wider at the brow and narrow from the cheeks down to the chin. Most of the time this face shape would also have high cheek bones. The best frames to aim for are with a heavier base and wingtips that are a little wider than your forehead. A wayfarer shape would work the best. Also look for cat eye, rectangular, browline or oval shapes.

SIMPLE TIPS FOR THE PERFECT PICNIC Words By Nicki Loretz-Frear - Blo and Flo Styled Events

Creating a great picnic isn’t rocket science. The best thing about a picnic is that you can have multiple picnics while perfecting the ideal outdoor soirée. However, to ensure you create magical moments and memories, here are a few tips to help you out: •

The first decision is where you are going to picnic. In this spectacular area we call home, we are blessed to be surrounded by numerous perfect spots. Just think of one of our many beaches, reserves, swimming holes or gardens. Or if the weather decides not to play ball, maybe under the perfect shady tree or even at home in the back yard. Wherever you choose, make sure that there is enough room to fling out the picnic blanket, an area for the frisbee and most importantly, space to stretch out for that vital postpicnic snooze.

What you choose to bring along will make or break the experience. The food needs to be fresh and plentiful – having a potluck or platters work well as people enjoy having options. The perfect picnic basket is worth its weight in gold, and saves you from carting around numerous bags. Staying hydrated is essential, but please remember the bottle opener and think about glassware! Cushions to get comfy on, an umbrella for shade and, do not forget the sunscreen and insect repellent.

To bump your picnic up to a luxury experience, music, linen napkins, fresh flowers, candles, and festoon lights will make it an event to be remembered.

THE ART OF BBQ-ING Beaches, BBQs, Christmas, Pohutukawa, ice creams, family. If summer was a mixtape, these six things would be the songs on that mixtape for me. And as we’ve just dipped our toes into summer, I think it’s an appropriate time to “lift the lid” on one of them in particular – the BBQ. Words Art Green

The good ole kiwi summer BBQ is both an essential piece of cookware and a social activity. I don’t know many other things that can tick both of those boxes. I mean, you don’t see many people chatting and having a beer next to their oven while baking a batch of muffins. At least I haven’t, and I’ve seen a lot of people bake muffins. I think us kiwis love BBQs for a few reasons: you can cook outside and chat to people, you get delicious BBQ/charred flavours, and there’s minimal cleaning up required. However, I think the BBQ's greatest asset is that they allow almost anyone to cook a delicious meal – even your half-drunk uncle with the funny eye can cook a mean steak on the barbie.

I have recently traded in my traditional kiwi gas BBQ for a big American charcoal BBQ. I’ve got one of those Big Green Eggs. To be honest, I think it looks more like a big green golf ball or a big green avocado, but it doesn’t really matter what it’s called, all that matters is that it cooks some sensational meat. If you haven’t tried meat cooked in a charcoal BBQ (especially slow cooked) then it’s worth seeking some out as it really is a different taste to what you’ll get from a gas BBQ. It’s also a very different experience – instead of simply turning the gas on and hitting the igniter button you have to go through a process of cleaning out the old ash, pouring in some new coal, lighting the coal (this can take 10-15mins depending on how you’re lighting it) and then waiting for the coal to burn and for the BBQ to get up to temperature before putting the meat on the grill. So it’s certainly not a spur-of-themoment type of scenario. However, with that wee rant out of the way I must admit I am now a huge fan of the charcoal BBQ. The taste is incredible, you can cook some really cool things (lots of different slow cooked meats) and I’ve actually come to enjoy the whole process. Favourites in our household are lamb shoulder, beer can chicken, reverse seared steaks, pizza, and buffalo chicken wings. www.instagram.com/art_green

ART'S BBQ-ING TOP TIPS •

The most important tip is to sort yourself out with a delicious beverage of your choice prior to commencing your BBQ-ing. If you’re in a mood to listen to some music then suss that too. You’re going to be spending a bit of time standing next to your BBQ no matter what you’re cooking so it’s essential that you take some time to set yourself up for an enjoyable experience and potentially a bit of you-time, depending on your situation. Prepare your meat well in advance. This means if you’re going to marinade a piece of meat make sure you do that hours before cooking. Recent studies suggest that for every hour that meat is swimming in marinade, its deliciousness increases by 5 SPS (Standard Points of Salivation). And if you’re just cooking meat as-is then it pays to get it out of the fridge ahead of time so that it is close to room temperature when you begin cooking it.

or online. These take a lot of the guesswork out of cooking meat to perfection – an easy way to make you look like a pro every time. •

If BBQ-ing on a charcoal BBQ make sure you light your coals and get them burning nicely with clear smoke before putting the food on. Don't rush it as you run the risk of having very smokytasting food. This will result in people sampling the food you’ve cooked and politely commenting something like “Mmm, Sebastian,” (you’re Sebastian in this scenario BTW) “This butterflied quail has such a delicious smoky flavour!” But in their head they’ll really be thinking: “OMG Sebastian just ruined this quail, waaay too smoky, I don’t think I’ll be coming back here for dinner, and come to think of it I don’t think I like Sebastian anymore.”

If making burger patties, slightly indent the centre (imagine a donut, but obviously not a complete hole through the pattie). Burger patties thicken in the centre when cooked and this trick will help them turn out as perfect flat patties rather than giant meatballs.

Get yourself a meat thermometer – you can pick them up relatively cheaply from local hardware stores

ADDICTED TO SUMMER Nicky’s been addicted to fishing since she was a sprat, and for the last seven years she has been the host of the most successful female-hosted television fishing show in Australasia - Addicted to Fishing. Every week the show brought audiences along on Nicky’s fishing adventures, taking local kiwis out on the water to celebrate everything fishing. More recently, Nicky has moved away from being in front of the camera to her biggest role yet, being a mum. Based in Mangawhai, Nicky still manages to get out on the water (even if not as much as she used to) and is honing in on 30-odd years of experimenting and creating catchto-cook recipes, and is now sharing these recipes with her audiences. Drawing on a lifelong passion for seafood, Nicky’s recipes are

based on fresh new flavours that are easy to make and with a real wow factor. If she hasn’t caught it herself, she is very conscious of sourcing the most sustainably caught seafood available, and with one-year-old Oscar being her biggest food critic, Nicky’s recipes are created for the whole family to enjoy. Fishing, diving and boating from Mangawhai’s coastline is what it’s all about for Nicky, and she is loving sharing these experiences with her young family. Watching little Oscar become a keen fisherperson is an absolute delight, and although Nicky has hung up the

camera for the time being, she is absolutely loving her new direction in providing her audience with mouth-watering yet simple recipes. Nicky says, “fishing is all about sharing and getting creative with seafood. Designing recipes with fresh, local produce is my passion right next to catching fish.” For more recipe inspiration, follow Nicky on Facebook and Instagram. www.facebook.com/addictedtofishingnz

MANDARIN & LIME SNAPPER A delicious platter that screams summer! I first made this dish after a cracker day of snapper fishing. It was hot and all I wanted was an ice cold bevy and a fresh dish to match. I whipped this up and paired it with crispy corn chips. It's the perfect snack to share with mates on a hot summer afternoon. Ingredients: •

4 x really ripe mandarins, juiced

2 x limes, juiced

4 x snapper fillets

1 bunch of coriander

2 x avocados, cut into cubes

1 small red onion, chopped finely

2 tbsp of coconut cream

Drizzle of olive oil

1 x red chilli, chopped finely

‘Proper Corn Chips’ pineapple salsa flavour

Fillet your snapper, then wash it in cold water before patting it dry with paper towels. Cut the fillets into chunks, then place in a bowl with the mandarin and lime juice. Cover and let it marinade in the fridge for exactly 10 minutes – make sure it’s no longer otherwise the acid in the citrus will over cook the fish. Drain the snapper, keeping the marinade aside for later. Layer half the fresh coriander, half the avocado, and half the red onion. Add your snapper pieces on top, then repeat, layering using the remaining coriander, avocado and red onion. Drizzle 2 tbsp of the marinade over the dish, then drizzle the olive oil, then the coconut cream. Sprinkle lots of fresh chilli over the top and serve with corn chips. Serves 4 as an entree. MOMOJO KEFIR Kefir is a fermented milk drink, similar to yoghurt, but comparing the two is like saying Lion Red is similar to your favourite craft IPA. Scott Butland and Torben Sorensen created Momojo kefir in the product development lab located at Torben’s lifestyle property in Puhoi. Words Luke Williamson

Scott explains, "we take more time over the fermentation which results in a very high lactobacillus count and makes Momojo a potent probiotic." One teaspoon of Momojo has the same probiotic content as one litre of yoghurt, which meets the Australian and New Zealand standard.

from cancer, a story he is open about on the Momojo website. Inspired to help others lead a happy and healthy life, Scott teamed up with Torben, who has around 50 years of experience in food technology and microbiology. "My lab is set up for product development for the food industry and I"ve been running it for 20 years. We've set up a small process facility for Momojo that is fully compliant and registered with MPI."

Probiotics are popular because gut health is being recognised as central to wholebody and mind wellbeing. Staying healthy is a poignant subject for Scott, who has had more than his share of family tragedy

Momojo is special even amongst other kefirs. "Anybody can make kefir quite easily, but we've put a lot of research into creating a superior product," says Torben. Momojo is unique in containing kefiran, a probiotic

Although kefir is relatively unknown in New Zealand, probiotics are big business and kefir is a premium-quality probiotic.

biofilm which is a result of the specific fermentation process, bacterial cultures and yeast used by Torben. Kefiran demonstrates antimicrobial characteristics, has good nutritional value and seems to be very well tolerated by people with gut issues such as reflux, stomach ulcers or throat problems. "Some people claim they get tremendous relief from Momojo," says Torben. "The effect can be quite rapid, within 15-20 minutes, and we believe it is because of the amazing characteristics of kefiran." The health benefits are obvious, but what does it taste like? "The taste is best

described as a drinkable yoghurt, but with superior probiotic properties," explains Scott. "It comes in four different flavours and has a mild fizz to it. "Torben tells me, "Momojo looks and tastes like a yoghurt, but it's actually more like a craft cheese in the way it's created." Launching the company has been challenging, Scott tells me. "We had our first day at the Matakana Farmers' Market three days before we went into lockdown in 2021. A lot of work had gone into getting ready and had to bide our time while we waited for alert levels to change. "In the meantime, Momojo is available through the Puhoi General Store, online and it will soon be stocked at Matakana Four Square. Developing a distribution network is Scott's focus for 2022. He is looking forward to being able to speak to shop owners and let them try the product. "Getting back to the Matakana Farmers' Market will also be a good opportunity for people to get a sense of what Momojo is and what it tastes like. I'd like to remove the mystery about this product and make it clear what benefits people can expect from Momojo." www.momojo.co.nz

BRAMBLE REINVENTED You may have smelt something cooking over at Bramble Espresso Shop & Honest Canteen of late. Jonny Dykes and the team have been smoking up a storm making this the new local favourite for meaty treats. What started as a great little coffee shop and cafe at Matakana Country Park has now evolved into a bustling espresso bar and canteen. We asked Jonny to tell us a little more about what’s happening over at Bramble.

TELL US ABOUT ‘FRANK’ THE SMOKER AND SOME OF THE SPECIALTIES… Frank came about as a combination of what seemed like an irresponsible decision from my brother-in-law and my passion for smoked meat and burgers. The business model has since changed considerably, with a large chunk of the food offering from the cabinet, the menu and the pie warmer being smoked. Smoked brisket, salmon and pork shoulder are our staples but we also frequently smoke beef short rib, beef cheeks and chorizo. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING PART OF THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY ON THE MATAKANA COAST? Having been part of the team that renovated the Matakana Village Pub nine years ago I got a taste of what it's like to be part of a country community. Although the community has grown since then, it seems like Bramble has maintained that local hub feel. I really think creating that environment is what rural hospitality is all about, HAS BRAMBLE ALWAYS BEEN A FAMILY AFFAIR? HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED? It really has, originally it was the brainchild of my sister Beck but after five years, two kids, another business and a husband involved in multiple businesses she was ready to move on and I was lucky enough to be in a position to buy it when she offered it to me. Coming home from Melbourne to be closer to family, it just seemed like the perfect fit.

TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE KEY CHANGES AT BRAMBLE THAT HAVE HAPPENED OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS… Taking over a successful business model I felt no real need to change too much. In saying that our biggest changes have been slightly different food offerings, better reflecting what myself and the kitchen staff like to cook and eat - hence the introduction of Frank.

NAME THREE OF YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITES ON THE MENU, WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER? If we were to break them into sections, from the cabinet the breakfast wrap, from the menu the smoked brisket burger, and from the pie warmer the cheeseburger sausage roll. A special mention must go to Mia’s vegetarian pie, it's amazing.

DESCRIBE BRAMBLE NOW IN THREE WORDS. WHAT'S THE ‘VIBE’? Relaxed, welcoming and delicious. The vibe is what you’d typically expect from a coastal café; surfboards line the walls, mismatched furniture and a range of eclectic artwork. It really offers a home away from home environment. SOIL AND SEED Working with his hands is not a foreign concept for Shaun Mackness, as the Matakana based self-employed landscaper is a former chef. After working in the food industry, including at restaurants such as the renowned Kauri Cliffs, he stepped away to achieve a better work-life balance as his family grew. Whilst creating magic in his clients’ outdoor spaces, it quickly became apparent that there is high demand for builtin gardens. And once these garden beds were built, there was a knock-on effect to needing good quality organic plants to fill them. An empty bed is where Soil and Seed can help, as they grow and sell various seedlings for the public. As a former chef, Shaun is passionate about using quality products in his dishes and grows the majority of the vegetables

and herbs his family uses from seeds in his garden. Now, the resurgence of people wanting to get their hands dirty and forage in their back yards has led Shaun and Sarah to expand their little home garden; they have even constructed a greenhouse to keep up with demand. They now have ample space to grow organic, spray-free, seasonal seedlings, exotic chillies, and in the cooler months, oyster mushrooms. The chillies, though, are Shaun’s favourite. He currently has over 200 plants of the hottest chilli in the world: the Carolina Reaper. When harvested, the chillies will be combined with mango and pineapple and then fermented and bottled, ready to sell to the public in early 2022. Shaun says adding in the other fruits reduces the heat and the fermentation process means that the shelf life is expanded, which is perfect for the locals in summer.

In this family, the apples do not fall far from the tree as Shaun and Sarah’s four children have launched themselves into all aspects

of gardening. Sarah says, “it is so rewarding to be able to teach them how to grow things from seed, nurture it and then harvest and prepare it together in a family meal.”

Locals can purchase the seedlings from their home at 22 Riverdale Lane, Matakana, seven

days a week between 10am to 2pm or at Gull in Matakana. If you require beautiful beds to start your own vegetable patch that Mr

McGregor would be proud of, then reach out. Shaun will construct the garden beds and

will supply you with gardening advice and a planting plan.

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR With the beach calling, kick back and enjoy the harvest. Keep picking crops like beans, tomatoes and cucumbers regularly to help keep the new fruit coming on. If you planted garlic mid-winter, it is time to harvest as the plants have flowered and are dying down. You will be over the moon about how good the fresh cloves from your own garden taste. Otherwise, this time of summer your garden is pretty much in maintenance mode. You may find the odd hole here and there that you can fill up with a quick-growing plant like some beetroot, bush beans or a cucumber. That’s if you don’t have enough of them already! Keep up all the good work you do to weed, mulch and water. When you water, do it less often and longer to top up the soil reserves. This helps plant roots go deeper. Words Geoff Ledbrook

HERBS A big range of herbs can be grown in the summer garden. As well as complementing the flavour of the vegetables you harvest, they have high nutritional value. There is a lot of information available now on “superfoods”. Herbs are often included in this category for the value of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidant compounds they contain. Herbs taste fantastic too! A big reason we find space in our gardens for them is the way they add flavour to so many dishes. There will definitely be a herb to go with most of the vegetables you are harvesting right now. Mint with new potatoes or zucchinis, basil with tomatoes, parsley in the tabbouleh, oregano and dill in the Greek salad, rosemary with lamb.

Basil, with its amazing fragrance, is packed with goodness. It is high in anti-inflammatory antioxidant flavonoids and volatile oils with anti-bacterial properties. Reputedly good for healthy joints and bones, it is also high in vitamin K and manganese, and a good source of copper, vitamin A and vitamin C. It also contains calcium, iron, folate, magnesium and omega 3 fatty acids. Not too bad for a herb you use to flavour your tomato salad! Basil has a range of varieties. These give a twist on flavours from the classic sweet Genovese basil, to Thai basil for Asian cooking, spicy cinnamon basil from Mexico, Persian basil from the Middle East with lemon and licorice hints, and sacred basil (Tulsi) used in Ayurvedic medicine. So quite a super herb really!

Parsley, a culinary companion with many vegetables, is great for planting outside your kitchen window. High in vitamins A, C & K, minerals potassium, magnesium iron and calcium, parsley contains good amounts of folate. Parsley has flavonoid antioxidants myricetin (anti-cancer properties) and apigenin (helps reduce inflammation). It has carotenoid antioxidants lutein, beta carotene and zeaxanthin, all associated with healthy vision. There are two main types of parsley: the triple curled varieties with densely frilled curly leaves and flat leaf Italian varieties with bigger leaves and a more mellow flavour. You can grow parsley most of the year, but it does have a tendency to bolt so have a replacement ready!

NO BAD SIDE Being local means that Omaha has always held a special place in the hearts of Beau and Nicki Edwards. So, when the opportunity came up for them to purchase a delectable piece of land at the northern end of the beach, they viewed the site and signed the papers the same day. Words Kate Moore

Nicki was guided by the immensely talented Celene (from Celene Interiors) and has produced a comfortable house saturated in understated sophistication. The "beach house", as Nicki refers to it, has an emphasis on entertaining whilst taking full advantage of the surroundings. "It is the type of home that could easily entertain a dozen people one night, but the next host a cosy dinner party alfresco relaxing in the sea breeze." The outdoor kitchen (put together by Outdoor Concepts) is Beau and Nicki's favourite space in the entire house; a beautiful space in which long afternoons spent in good company can stretch on into the night. beach, Nicki and Beau wanted to encapsulate a modern coastal feeling, which the simple, elegant colour palette has achieved, including a solid wood floor.

an appealing open plan kitchen, living and dining area, an immaculate master suite, a double bedroom, and that valuable outdoor entertaining space.

Still, just like in life, a few delightful colour and lighting surprises ensure the word predictable can never be applied to the property. The house provides a space for people to escape their busy lives and relax with friends and family, and the layout ensures they are provided with ample space to do so.

The house leans towards being a turn-key property as the whiteware is all included, so it is just waiting for the perfect buyer to come along, put their clothes in the large robes and hang their artwork – not that anything could really compete with all that Mother Nature has on display! The grounds outside have not escaped careful thought and planning, with the fully fenced area specifically designed to be low maintenance with easy care landscaping. There is even space for a lap pool if the new owner desires.

There are five bedrooms and two living areas split over the two equally stunning levels. Downstairs, the large windows showcase mature palms and oversized pots filled with trailing green foliage (which will remain with the house) and hosts the entranceway, one living space, a master suite (complete with ensuite and walk-in robe), two double bedrooms, a fully equipped bathroom, and a large laundry with plenty of storage for all those beach towels. It also houses an oversized double garage complete with a large nook at the rear to store those crucial water toys such as jet skis and stand-up paddleboards without forsaking car space. Upstairs, the large windows show there is no bad side to this location. You can find

And let's not forget the native greenery in front, coupled with a view of the dunes and, as the cherry on top, the bird sanctuary. The property's position was a significant draw for the Edwards’ as it provides the best that Omaha offers. The cedar-clad beauty has been built to the highest standard by Edwards Builders, with Beau at the helm. YOUNG ARTIST’S WISH COMES TRUE! In 2011, at the age of six, Stevie Sheehan, from Waipu, was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, a rare autoimmune disorder causing rheumatoid arthritis, weak and painful muscles, extreme fatigue, vasculitis and Raynaud’s. Under the care of Starship Hospital and her fabulous team at the Child Health Centre, Whangarei Hospital, ten years later Stevie achieved her wish. With encouragement from her community paediatric nurse, Laeonie McKinnon, Stevie, along with the amazing team at Make-A-Wish Foundation (namely

Dianne and Robbie Christensen, Sophie McGregor and Cassie Roma) brought her wish to create an art business into life.

in hospital and away from school in which Stevie has often watched and wondered about other people’s lives.

Her new business is called Pluvio Sonder Art. PLUVIO comes from the word pluviophile, meaning a lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days, because Stevie can’t go out in the sun. And SONDER comes from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, meaning “the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own”, and this comes from the many lonely and boring days

Stevie’s need to paint is simple, it lets her “escape from all the crap”. The pressures of school, letting people down or worrying about whether her pain is her autoimmune disease flaring. “Painting is home and it is comforting”. Stevie’s first exhibition at the Red Door Gallery, in Waipu, under the experienced guidance and support of gallery owner,

Vicki Nicholas, was a huge success. Stevie sold all but four of her 18 canvases in just one night, which left her completely overwhelmed with emotion. She hopes to sell her prints and greeting cards at local markets, and is already dreaming of another exhibition as she works on new ideas for canvases. Stevie is also working on two commission pieces, as well as gearing up to go back to school after being away for most of this year. Once Stevie completes Year 13 in 2023, she would love to travel and attend UCL, in London, to study the classical fine arts. Stevie looks forward to experiencing a life surrounded by ancient history, a different culture, a winter Christmas and a place where everything is strange. Stevie is available through her Instagram page, Facebook and new website (thanks again from Make-A-Wish) - as well as email pluviosonderart@gmail.com. Stevie is open to learning all she can about running a successful small business and hopes her art can be enjoyed by many. www.pluviosonderart.co.nz

UNLEASH YOUR ARTISTIC SIDE AT CREATIVE MATAKANA 2022 If you decided over lockdown that your life needs a little something extra (since travel is still off the cards for most of us), an arts workshop or crafty new skill might just bring back some sparkle. If that sounds appealing, well, you’re in luck: the fifth Creative Matakana week in May 2022 promises a bumper crop of creative input. Words Kathy Hunter

There’ll be six five-day courses, and some great flexible options too – some of the short courses have been doubled up. This means you can keep it short and sweet doing just one, or potentially do both to give more depth to your practice. Long-term Creative Matakana (CM) tutor Jeff Thomson returns with a mould-making and casting workshop; Louise McRae is back too, with wood and stone sculpture, and Alysn Midgelow - Marsden’s textile arts is a perennial favourite. New tutors include Jo Ogier (her work graces the website) who teaches wood and lino cuts, Terrie Reddish, who’ll introduce the art of bookbinding, and Maxine Thompson, who has travelled the world teaching pastel painting. Short courses which have the option of one or both workshops include Helene Carpenter’s painting and drawing (another

annual sell-out) and Mike Walker with woodturning, while having travelled from Golden Bay where he grows his English osier. Peter Greer will teach the ancient art of willow weaving. There’s also memoir writing with the highly experienced Maria de Jong, and a day of still-life photography with Diane Halstead. And joining our area’s large Kiribati community to teach authentic weaving are two revered artists, Kaetaeta Watson and Louisa Humphry. A selection of special ‘One-Day Wonders’ rounds out the week with a celebration of Matakana’s produce, craft and history. Each of these single-day events, presented by experts in their fields, will inform and delight – and as always there’ll be a delicious lunch included.

BLOOD ON VINES “Readers who enjoy a more traditional crime novel will love Eskedahl’s bestseller debut set in the halcyon environs of Matakana wine country...But what elevates Blood On Vines are the multi-dimensional and relatable characters, something she’s worked hard to achieve.... As the shocking events unfold... Eskedahl expertly ramps up the tension to an action-packed finale.” Greg Flemming-NZ Herald Canvas Magazine

GOING SOLAR WITH SOLARCRAFT There is something fulfilling about sitting on your deck on a sunny summers day, with the cool sea breeze on your face and a refreshing beverage in your hand, knowing that the cedar spa pool on your left and the EV in your garage are being powered using your very own Solar Power System (SPS). “That’s what people love about solar” says local solar expert Tim Dudek from Solarcraft. “With a Solarcraft SPS you are completely independent from the power companies and start to reap the reward from the moment the system is installed and turned on”. Solarcraft have been specialising in off-grid, hybrid, and grid-tied solar systems for over ten years. Local installers to Auckland, Northland, Great Barrier Island and beyond, Tim and his team have seen a massive increase in demand for their solar systems to increase customers self-sufficiency and reduce outgoings. Utilising the latest technology in Battery Energy Storage, with the highest quality SunPower solar modules, our customers have taken their large power-hungry homes completely off-grid while keeping their

new electric vehicle topped up with excess solar energy. And it’s not just residents with their baches and houses wanting to invest in solar power. New Zealand businesses are utilising the advantages of solar to reach their sustainability goals and appeal to more customers, while also reducing their longterm outgoings. Snowberry Natural Skincare, located in Whangaripo Valley, have installed a Solarcraft off-grid solar system to run their Bioshed Research and Development facility as well as a hybrid system with solar carport to power their onsite head office. This is a company using solar to it true potential, like Daily Organics, New Zealand’s premium apple cider vinegar and kombucha brewery situated in the picturesque countryside of

Matakana. Their ambition for sustainability and long-term self-sufficiency has led them to utilise a solar powered water bore for their ground sourced fresh water supply, bringing fresh natural filtered water to the tap by clean solar energy. “Solar is the future and it’s great to see solar power and sustainable energy becoming a part of everyday life” says Tim. At Solarcraft you will receive complete inhouse service from sales and design to installation and long-term technical support. PREPARE FOR SUCCESS Five tips for smashing your goals and winning 2022 Words Elissa Jose, Eco and Action Photos Dominey Flores

The early months of a new year are traditionally a time for us all to make big plans and resolutions. But during these uncertain times, some of us might be wondering if we should even bother. Goal setting has, in my opinion, never been more important for 2022, they give us hope. They give us something to work towards, provide direction and motivation and help us determine what we really want. The challenge of course, is sticking to them. Easier said than done, right? Over the years, I’ve identified five nonnegotiables when it comes to setting goals and smashing them – regardless of how the year unfolds:

CLARITY

ACHIEVABLE

Even with the best intentions, if we don’t align what we think we want with how it feels, what we do often comes up short. So, I recommend spending some time getting really clear on what your goal is. When you visualise yourself achieving your goals, what emotions are you feeling? How do you feel now? Use the excitement (and potential nerves) as a signal that your goal is the right one.

To make sure your goals are achievable, you need to break them down into chunks that create momentum and will get you to your biggest target. Create a map of what you will achieve first, second, third, all the way until you create your new reality. Look up how to set SMART goals and – I can’t stress this enough – be realistic. No one can learn a language in a day, so start with a few words each week.

MOTIVATION

ACCOUNTABILITY

With your dream clear in your mind, ask yourself these key questions: Why is achieving this goal important to me? How will my life improve once I have it? Hint: this is your motivation, the push you need to draw on when you feel like quitting.

This is the secret that will get you over the finish line. Make yourself accountable to someone. Be it a friend or partner, give that person the authority to check in with you, track your progress and cheer you on. If goals were easy, you would have

likely already achieved them. Having someone on your team can make all the difference.

CONSISTENCY Consistency is key. Put reminders everywhere in your house, put a regular appointment in your calendar to complete your to-do list and be consistent. LUNAR INSPIRATION Claudia Moir has been a local travel broker in Mangawhai for ten years but with the borders shut due to the pandemic, there was not much travel to sell. So, on 26 May, while observing the Super Moon, she had the idea to create Moon Calendars similar to the ones that she used to buy every year when she lived in Austria 20 years ago. She has always been fascinated by the moon and remembers her grandmother saying that you should always cut your hair during the waning moon for it to look thick and healthy. This is just one small example of how the phases of the moon can affect our daily lives. If you think about it,

it makes sense if the moon has the power to create the tides, to manipulate the huge body of water that is our oceans, why wouldn’t it affect every living being on earth as well? After all, our bodies are roughly 70% water. The knowledge of living your life aligned with the lunar cycle is not something new, in fact it is ancient knowledge which all cultures around the world have embraced in one form or another. Claudia's calendars are based on her European heritage, adapted to the New Zealand climate and seasons, and include

daily symbols which indicate best days for planting, weeding, fertilising, pruning, harvesting, preserving, window cleaning, laundry and haircuts. The diary includes the zodiac signs, weekly gardening tips and room for your own notes, while the wall calendars feature some beautiful moon pictures. They are all about how to live more sustainably and in tune with nature. You can order your calendar or diary online. www.moonpower.co.nz www.facebook.com/MoonpowerNZ

SUPPORTING IMMUNITY AROUND COVID-19 After two years, we’ve come to accept the virus that now lingers throughout the world. Words Kim Campbell, The Matakana Naturopath

We hear of positive cases soaring from time to time, and our hospitals becoming burdened with the crisis. Yet, there is silence around supporting our body’s natural ability to protect ourselves and reduce the severity of infection. Here are some simple tips that have been scientifically researched throughout the world to support your health naturally to potentially prevent or reduce infection, whether you’re up to date with the vaccines or not.

Avoiding foods that trigger inflammation. The typical culprits are types of gluten, A1 milk and sugar

Schisandra, Ashwagandha and Pine mushroom (high in shikimic acid which is thought to reduce attachment of the spike protein)

Moving with moderate exercise in sunlight for at least 20-30mins daily

Medicinal mushrooms: Cordyceps, Reishi and Shitake (regulate inflammation and immune function)

Gingko, Ginger and Turmeric (reducing clotting formation).

Eating naturally immune-boosting foods such as garlic, chilli, lemon, local honey, broths and fermented foods

The infection is known to have three phases: the viral phase (day 1-5), the inflammation phase (day 5-10), and the hyper-inflammation/clotting phase (up to 30 days). Before treating yourself with any nutritional or herbal medicine, please speak with your local naturopath or integrated healthcare professional trained in nutrition and herbal medicine.

PREVENTION:

Nutritional Supplementation:

Although anyone can be infected, research suggests those who are more likely to have a severe outcome are those who have current medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Reducing your risk of these conditions and supporting your overall health can be achieved through dietary and lifestyle modifications, such as: •

Eating plenty of fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables, and quality protein

• •

Getting adequate sleep every night

Reducing stress and adopting mindfulness.

THE FIRST SIGNS OF INFECTION:

This phase is crucial for acting fast and preventing serious outcomes. •

Zinc: 30-50mg daily

Vitamin C: 2-4g daily in divided doses

• • • •

Vitamin D3: 5-10,000IU daily

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC): 2400mg daily Quercetin: 1000mg daily Melatonin: 10mg daily

Herbal Medicine: •

Nigella Seed (good for indigestion, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, dropsy, amenorrhoea and dysmenorrhoea)

Many of these supplements and herbal medicines require a prescription and/ or are only accessible from an integrated GP, naturopath, herbalist or nutritionist, as some may not be suitable for your current health condition. Acute phone consultations are available to discuss nutritional and herbal support with contactless local delivery available if you are in isolation. Digital consultations are available for those looking at supporting their overall health in a natural and sustainable approach. hello@thematakananaturopath.com www.thematakananaturopath.com *Please note this article is for informational purposes only.

BE SUN SMART THIS SUMMER There is a fine line between getting too much sun and not enough.

The sun is essential for our health and regulated exposure can be beneficial for us. It helps us produce melatonin to support sleep, build strong immune systems to help fight sickness and disease and also produces serotonin in the brain to help fight depression. Too much sun exposure can also be harmful. It damages the skin, causes premature aging, and increases the risk of skin cancer. There is a common myth that a base tan prevents burning. The truth however is that sunscreen is much more effective in protecting you from sunburn than a base tan is. To prevent sunburn it is best to avoid being out in the sun between 10am and 3pm. But, living in a beautiful country with great beaches and parks this isn't the easiest thing to do. When you are out in the sun always apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 40 which protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Sunblock should be applied 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapplied every two to three hours and after swimming or sweating. Blush Beauty in Matakana stocks a lovely broad spectrum mineral sunscreen, Coola. Always remember to apply a nourishing aloe vera gel if you experience too much sun exposure. There are some wonderful aloe vera products at Arcadia Health Store in Warkworth. If you are wanting that natural sun-kissed look without the risks of skin damage and premature aging, sunless tanning lotions are the way to go. Ecotan is an easy to

apply self-tanning product available at Binn Inn Warkworth. Professional spray tans also offer a great way to achieve a natural looking full body tan. 67 Tans & Teeth Whitening in Warkworth use professional spray tan solutions that are organic, natural, cruelty free and vegan

friendly. Their products contain argan oil, aloe vera, vitamin a, vitamin c and vitamin e, ensuring your skin feels hydrated and replenished after every spray tan. Be sun safe, be sun smart. Don't let today's time in the sun affect the health of your skin tomorrow.

STEEL FOCUS LEADS TO NEW POSSIBILITIES Words Kate Moore

Craig Pierce has worked with steel for over 25 years. After moving to Matakana four years ago with his wife and their two kids he found he had some spare time up his sleeve, and so he began tinkering and creating bits and pieces for his property and before long, Matakana Metal Works was born. Fast forward to 2021, and his Auckland-based company Transport Technology is less demanding on his time, with Craig only needing to pop down once a week to oversee things. This additional free time has allowed him to develop his boutique metalwork service even more. Craig enjoys “working with his hands and seeing the final result” and he

encourages people to come to him with an idea or a picture to see what’s possible, as creating one-offs is where he thrives. For Craig, the joy of working with steel stems from the fact that steel is an adaptive material that is very strong. Steel can be used to create decorative features such as privacy screens, coffee tables and balustrades but also to create structural work such as beams and canopies. Craig has recently completed some high end installations, and so far his work has mainly been gracing some elegant homes in Takapuna and the family's stunning home on Smith Road. Steel is usually thought of as a blue-black material, but Craig enjoys playing

around with all types of steels including Corten Steel and seeing the different qualities it offers. It is also possible to powder coat it, which is requested more and more frequently – this provides additional options and styles for different types of items. Craig is also the first to admit that when it comes to his bespoke craft, he is extremely fussy with what he produces. Therefore, it makes complete sense that he has adopted one of his earlier company's motto which is “Excellence is our standard”, which he believes sums up the successful businesses he’s founded in the past, as well as his outlook on the future. 027 474 1488

BIG BOATS, UNEXPECTEDLY Alex Stone meets the near-legendary Matakana boatbuilder Barry Jones. To get up to Matakana a few weeks ago, we took the dinghy from Sandpsit. But it need not be such a small boat: in the late 1800s and early 1900s SS Kotiti, a 71-foot steamer of the Northern Steamship Company, regularly plied this route. Words Alex Stone

Almost unbelievably, Barry Jones later built or worked on an astonishing 65 big boats at his boatyard in Matakana village. He launched almost all of them right there at the local slipway and took them downstream on the tide. Some smaller yachts and launches came upstream to be worked on at his yard – taking care to get safely under power lines crossing the creek a nautical mile above Sandspit. Barry put in the hard yakka from 1978 to 1997 (his knees are feeling it now), when he sold out the business that then became Qualicraft. Before putting up a huge shed in the main street, where Matakana Marine is now, Barry says he built boats in “haybarns – wherever I could find space in the district.” The biggest he put in at Matakana were a 45-foot launch and a keeler with a 6-foot draft. On one special occasion he launched two Lidgard 34s, popular sailing keelboats, on the same day. He must have been a sight hurrying back to his yard on a tractor to fetch the second! His biggest boat was a Warwickdesigned 60-foot yacht – but that had to be transported to Robertson’s Yard in Warkworth for its launching. Its 2m draft would have been a bit dicey for the water depth at Matakana Wharf, even at a king tide. Another epic launch day that Barry remembers is when they launched a 42-foot Pelin. He and his team were ‘detained’ by the celebrations, and the tide fell – but the boat “kept floating all night in a hole between the wharf and the launching ramp, while we partied on.” Now the partying is of a more gentle and civilised kind, aboard James Groenhart's

Matakana River Tours. He does a onehour discovery cruise leaving from the Matakana Wharf. Barry was on the Sandspit Yacht Club and Marina committee for many years. He tells me “the situation [with dredging there] is pretty much under control, now.” However, he did add that “we skimmed the channel last year, and deepened the water under some marina berths. And we’re going to do a bit more dredging this year.” Barry knows his local history well. I asked about a shark-oil factory I read about at Matakana. No, he corrected me, it was actually opposite the Sandspit Wharf. The foundations are still to be seen there, amid the scrub. As for an almost-mythical peach wine that

was supposedly produced in Matakana back in the day, Barry couldn’t help me with that. But he does remember a lemon-based wine (another!) called Lemora, that his Dad and his mates were partial too. As for the general quality of early Matakana wines, Barry is straight-up: “It was all turps in those days.” Kotiti, he tells me, means to go astray or get side-tracked. The name was considered the most appropriate as the settlers in the district were known for their own unique kind of ‘go-aheadness’. There’s no straight line home for us, as we thread the fast-falling river and its lazy bends back to Sandspit. But this short journey provides ample satisfaction for my yearning to always explore up a waterway, and meet local characters. Meeting Barry Jones – even only by phone afterwards – was well worth it.

CARLI OSO Following the release of his debut EP Steal Your Shine, Carli Oso has returned with his first full length album The Wrecking Joint - released in December 2021.

This debut LP is a testament to the myriad emotions pursuing almost all of us at present. Despair, indignation and bewilderment quash tiny islands of hope, elation and idealism in this heartwrenching, foot-stomping tribute to the times. As with Steal Your Shine, Carli wrote, recorded and produced the entire record from his home in the Northland hills, giving the record an undeniable indie feel. Big guitars contend with high-rise vocals in his latest 11-track creation. We sit down with Carli Oso for a chat about his latest album. WHAT SONG FROM THE WRECKING JOINT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY? I would have to say Precious Time, because it's the song that came out sounding the closest to the idea that I had in my head at the time. It's a song about not taking everything at face value, which is something I have started to attempt to implement in my own life as we all traipse through the minefield of emotions hitting us all right now. I'm also shamelessly in love with both the vocal and guitar melodies! WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM MAKING THE WRECKING JOINT? That when it comes to production, it's always possible for less to be more. I thought that in order to create a bigger sound I needed bigger gear and a bigger room. But the size of the record is ultimately down to the amount of yourself

you're willing to put into it. There's no doubt that The Wrecking Joint is basic, even primitive in terms of production, but I don't think that takes any value away from the size of the emotions throughout the tracks. HOW DOES LIVING IN WAIPU INFLUENCE YOUR MUSIC? Living alone in rural New Zealand has definitely forced me to come to terms with some of my own personal pitfalls. I have great friends and family around me, but I spent the entire writing and recording process in a cabin by the woods, which pushed me into looking in the mirror and fessing up to past mistakes. That being said, you're never too far from the beach or the bush in Waipu, so getting out into the world to clear your head is always doable. IF YOU HAD ONE MESSAGE FOR PEOPLE LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Draw your own conclusions. All of the songs have meaning to me (whether they're about me personally or someone/

something else), but the beauty of music is that it's entirely possible for another person to take away an entirely different message, or for a particular song to resonate with them in a completely different way. WHICH NZ ARTIST WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH? Great question. For such a small place, New Zealand is absolutely bursting at the seams with musical prowess across every genre. I love a lot of the stuff that Troy Kingi is putting out there to the world, and Mako Road have an epic thing going on right now, so I'd probably start with those two! WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2022? I think that 2022 will be another year of introspection for me. I have been playing music for a long time but I feel that I'm only just starting to develop who Carli Oso is and what he has to say, so no doubt there will be another album release, or an EP at the very least! www.facebook.com/carliosomusic www.instagram.com/carliosomusic

RESTORING THE PAST FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE Rising like a phoenix from the ashes, this newly restored heritage building recently opened in Waipu. Words Kate Moore

The neglected old National Bank of New Zealand building located in Waipu has captivated Lindy Davis for over a decade. Every time she drove past it, she saw beyond the deterioration and lack of love, instead picturing an elegant building waiting for someone to bring it back to life. In early 2021 the opportunity arose for Lindy and her family to take ownership of this diamond in the rough. Over seven months (and two lockdowns), they completed a sympathetic renovation to restore this historic building back to the elegant lady it once was.

The restoration journey for any building never runs smoothly, but add in the fact that this is a heritage building, and the complications increase. These include trying to source materials that are sensitive to the era of the building, such as the design features (tiles, joinery, timber, paint colours, hardware, and bathroom fittings) to matching timber profiles to the ones constructed nearly 100 years ago. After the lockdown in August that prevented the Auckland project manager getting to Waipu, Lindy took over the role of managing

the building project. Due to the various restrictions caused by the pandemic, the building company Ashwood Construction had several builders unable to cross the border and a list of materials that couldn’t be obtained. Lindy engaged two local builders who were a perfect fit with the crew. Several members of her family were hauled onto the site to help with landscaping and painting. She says that “painting a picket fence is right up there with pulling teeth.” She also discovered that “scraping and restoring timber joinery

previously buried beneath multiple layers of paint is a protracted and painful exercise.” The quality and craftsmanship of the timber joinery created all those years ago has been brought back to life and Lindy believes it’s far superior to the factory-produced joinery in some areas of the building. The original Rimu doors, floor, windows and stairwell were sanded back and finished with Danish

oil, now stunning features of this heritage building. During the restoration of the original bank vault, they discovered the concrete pourer’s signature on the ceiling cavity – R Goodison, December 23, 1936. The vault floor has been lined with stunning decorative tiles, and an antique crystal chandelier illuminates the cavity. To counter the hard work, there were some

special moments along the way. One of the highlights being the discovery of a wedding album that had slipped behind the façade of the plasterboard wall and lay hidden in a concealed brick fireplace, gathering dust. After some investigation, Lindy discovered that the album belonged to the doctor who had previously lived and run his medical practice from the building. They

tracked down Doctor Morrison’s wife, and to everyone’s delight the album was returned to them. When asked why she wanted to see this building restored, Lindy says that “heritage buildings bring a sense of history and nostalgia. They evoke memories of times and lifestyles we no longer have.” “We live in a globalised and constantly changing world, where things are more often replaced than restored. Heritage buildings create a sense of time and place for future generations and add some dimension to the community.” This iconic landmark heritage building is back on its feet and known as Nova Scotia Junction. It’s pitched to be a vibrant hub for innovative business, retail and hospitality. Maxar Architects and Mike Whittaker Mortgages occupy the first floor and a women’s clothing boutique Bohemia, has opened its doors on the ground floor. There are two prime retail spaces and a unique spot available for hospitality in this beautiful building in the heart of Waipu township.

MANGAWHAI SCULPTURE EXHIBITION The biennial Mangawhai Sculpture Exhibition has been rescheduled to 19 and 20 March 2022. Exhibition founder, Mangawhai glass artist Pauline Mann, says the call has been made to go ahead because interest from previous as well as new exhibitors remains high, despite the uncertainty Covid brings. This time the exhibition is set in a picturesque olive grove opposite Mangawhai Beach School. It is easily accessible and perfect for displaying works. Visitors will be able to wander through the trees and enjoy a wide variety of sculptures. A café, live music and a children’s activity area are also planned. Another new feature is the creation of two awards for outstanding work: People's Choice and the Curator's Award. This exciting addition is consistent with the exhibition’s aim to encourage and showcase high quality sculptural works from a diverse range of established and upcoming artists, for the benefit of artists and public alike. Past exhibitions have attracted both local and overseas artists working in many different media, and works have ranged from monumental, site specific, permanent, to ephemeral in nature. We are looking forward to building on the success of our two previous exhibitions. www.sculpture-in-the-grove.weebly.com 027 460 1536
