Rewriting History Words Kate Moore
Stepping into the Paparoa Hotel is like stepping into your typical Grandma's house. It is warm, honest, comfortable and the décor speaks of an era long gone. The classic 1950s gastropub is a remembrance to years past with iconic A.H. Reed landscape photography jostling for position amongst Whites Aviation photography, flower prints from the 1960s and historic photos of local families and fishermen wearing “small shorts (and) holding big fish”. Family is very much the heart of the pub as Pam Goode’s parents first purchased it in the 1970s. The very first ‘job’ that Pam held was helping in the kitchen at eight and a half. “In those days,” Pam says, “it was just your typical country pub, so food wasn’t really available, apart from the standard fare of pies, chips and chocolate”. Her parents then leased it out from 1975 but five years ago Pam took over day-to-day management, breathing life into the old pub. Her dream
is simple - to create a destination venue for families and tourists alike. To create and serve contemporary food with surprising flavours using (where possible) local ingredients and to create a space for people to come and slow their pace. The Paparoa Hotel is located on State Highway 12, the first stop north on the twin coast discovery highway. It is an area off the well-worn tourist track but boasts an unspoiled piece of New Zealand showcasing a spectacular harbour, beaches, an ancient Kauri Forest and rolling green farmland with historic settler homes. This place of living history has a lot to offer and to discover it properly you will need to spend a night in one of the Hotel's charming rooms. While you will not find a bar fridge in any of the five rooms available you will be comfortable in the clean, warm, and thoughtfully decorated spaces. Having travelled extensively around the world where great food is often available in the
smallest towns, Pam gets excited when she sees fresh, imaginative food back home in provincial restaurants and bars. “Quality food tourism is a great part of New Zealand having a more value rich, sustainable tourism that really works for local communities and local producers,” she says. The Paparoa Hotel’s menu items are inspired by the bounty that surrounds them, and having access to some of the most beautiful and freshest ingredients in the world, such as Kaipara Oysters and Flounder (caught by a local family from down the road). They offer a Pulled Pork and Watercress Pizza which is reminiscent of a boil up. There is a Raw Kumara Salad, using unique orange Kumara sourced directly from Ruawai and then there is Pam's favourite which is the ‘California Dreaming Burger’, one of the many delicious vegetarian options. If you wish to spend the day exploring after checking in then a delicious picnic basket can be prepared,

Spanish Influence Maite Paternain has spent the best part of the last decade concocting beautiful recipes and photographing her foodie creations to be enjoyed by thousands of readers of publications such as ELLE International. Words Leah Botherway
Growing up in Basque Country in Spain, it was no surprise that Maite has found herself working in the culinary industry. A foodie’s paradise, the Basque Country is a coastal border region that straddles both France and Spain and takes culinary influences from both the sea and the mountain culture of the area. Maite grew up in the town of Irun on the Spanish side of the Basque Country. Travelling over the border to France every day to attend school, Maite was lucky enough to grow up in two countries famous for their two very different cuisines. This enviable upbringing meant that Maite was always surrounded by beautiful food and grew up in a culture where food was always at the forefront of every family gathering. Maite made the move to the UK in her early twenties, and it was there that she fell for the charms of her now-husband Graeme, a Kiwi on his OE. Unsurprisingly Maite managed to convince Graeme to move back to Basque Country with her, where they proceeded to create a new life for themselves and start a family. The combination of being back surrounded by beautiful food and produce and being at home with her young family inspired Maite to start a food and lifestyle blog. It was this blog
that provided Maite with a creative outlet and allowed her to share her culinary talents with the world, all whilst providing a sneak peek into her life in the Basque Country. What began as a necessity to accompany her blog, Maite discovered that she took great joy in styling and taking photos. Unlocking a passion for photography, this became the part of her blog that she enjoyed most. Over the following years, when Maite wasn’t in the kitchen creating recipes or running around after her young children, she spent her time studying photography and honing her craft. In 2017, Maite entered some of her photos in a competition held by Delicious Magazine in the UK, where she finished as Runner Up. This competition gave Maite the confidence to contact other magazines, and the rest, as they say, is history. She began creating mouth-watering recipes for ELLE International along with local magazines and supermarkets in the Basque Country. When not creating recipes, Maite would work with local businesses across the food and hospitality industries. She worked with a range of clients from butchers and wineries to supermarkets and restaurants, styling and photographing beautiful social media and websites.

PROFILE
While the Basque Country was a wonderful place to live and bring up their children, Maite and Graeme had always planned to one day move to New Zealand. So, in December 2019, they finally bit the bullet and bought a house in Point Wells. By the end of March 2020, they had packed up their life in Spain, enrolled the children at Matakana Primary School and made the move. Point Wells’ small friendly community on the water’s edge provided a perfect substitute for Basque Country. Still creating recipes for magazines, Maite found that the region gave her unrivalled access to beautiful produce to continue writing recipes influenced by both land and sea. Whilst Maite intends to continue to write for her European clients, she also wants to establish some business a little closer to home. The finishing touches are being added to her studio, and once she’s set up, Maite intends to offer her services to local businesses. Whether it’s editorial photography, social media content or assisting people with bringing their brands to life, Matie can’t wait to start working a little more locally. www.instagram.com/matakana.food. photographer www.maitepaternain.com

Junction Award Winner 2021 Four Square Molesworth, Mangawhai Heads Hamish and Hannah Townshend bought the Mangawhai Heads Four Square in January 2020. After working in the store and being in the community for 18 months, Hamish knew he had to jump at the opportunity to purchase the business when it came up for sale. Hannah has been by Hamish’s side since day one after leaving her career in healthcare to support him on this venture. They are joined by their amazing team of over 30 staff who go above and beyond when needed. They showed this throughout the 2020/21 lockdowns by supporting the community by putting in extra work to stock the shelves. “We couldn’t be more proud of how everyone stepped-up over this unknown and stressful situation being essential workers
day after day to provide essential supplies for our community,” says Hamish. The trust that grew between the team and the community over the COVID-19 lockdowns went from strength to strength, which greatly aided them when they temporarily established a home delivery service for the vulnerable. This was a huge logistical challenge, but thanks to a few locals in the Civil Defence they were able to provide this service in a time of need. Growing their connections within the community is a big focus for Hamish and Hannah this year. They are always looking to support local businesses by stocking their products on their shelves, with brands like
Happy Chicks Eggs proudly out on display and Andra’s Flowers blooming brightly as you walk in the front entrance - just some of the latest additions to their range. They are looking forward to being able to increase their range of fresh, everyday convenient foods and meal solutions as extending their back-of-house area will provide the opportunity to expand their freshly baked breads, pastries and hot food ranges. Keeping up with the latest food trends, listening to customers' requests and getting their favourite products in for them are all ways that have helped the business to grow and flourish. 3 Wood Street, Mangawhai Heads

OVERALL RUNNER UP PETE & MARY'S EATERY LTD After working in Hospitality since leaving school and having a dream to own their own café one day, siblings Tim and Suz along with their partners decided to venture out in 2019 and purchase what was Ginger Café at the time. They renamed it Pete & Mary’s Eatery after their late grandparents who had a huge impact on their lives. They had only been open for eight weeks before the first lockdown which meant they had to be creative about keeping some kind of income coming in. They utilised the front window of the café to make food and coffee available to be purchased, and now have a “Level 3/4 lockdown routine” that they kick into action anytime it is needed. The support from the local community blew them away and Tim and Suz are so very thankful for this support. They value sustainability so wherever possible they use locally grown/sourced products and produce, such as the local butcher, local produce growers etc. They also choose to use biodegradable packaging, coffee cups, and encourage the use of ‘Keep-cups’. Tim and Suz also have the lease to the ‘Old Bakehouse’ and intend to get this functioning as a commercial kitchen again, as they are quickly outgrowing the kitchen within the café. They also want to offer whole cakes, a selection of catering and a greater retail selection - biscuits, edible gifts etc. 21 Queen Street, Warkworth
THE MAKING OF THE 2021 J AWARD In the heart of Warkworth Emma Zhang works in her purpose built studio carefully crafting each piece of pottery by hand following the ancient skills of centuries past. She is inspired by her heritage, and the colours and textures of nature. She has created the 2021 J Award with slab building techniques, using a blend of stoneware and terracotta clays. The glaze is achieved through a Shino and white glaze reduction gas firing. Emma’s passion is infectious as she leads small groups through the steps of hand-building and throwing. If you ever thought to try pottery, adult classes are available, as well as school holiday classes for children. Her studio is open by appointment, and you can follow her on Instagram to see more of her creations or visit her Facebook for more information on workshops. www.facebook.com/ruiceramics | ruiceramics@gmail.com

Desktop Plants In 2010, a study by the University of Technology in Sydney discovered a significant impact to employees’ health and wellbeing once greenery was added to work spaces. Their findings noted a reduction of indoor air pollution and noise levels, with an overall improvement in office aesthetics. But probably more surprising was the significant decrease in feelings of stress and negativity felt by staff; general performance and productivity improved and in turn the number of absences amongst staff fell. Here are some top picks for indoor plants that grow well in the New Zealand climate. Snake Plant – The Snake Plant (also known as ‘Mother in Law's Tongue’), with its stiff upright leaves, is a perfect plant for beginners as it can tolerate being neglected, so won't suffer if you leave it over Christmas
break. They prefer indirect sunlight and less frequent watering so allow them to dry out in between waterings. Ficus – Ficus is one of the most popular ornamental indoor plants. It keeps a treelike shape and enjoys bright indirect or unfiltered light and can handle relatively high humidity levels. Peace Lily – With their dark green foliage and beautiful white flowers, they are great for cleaning the air of the room they are in. Peace lilies are tropical plants so they prefer a warm, humid environment and bright but indirect light. Make sure to keep the soil moist, but avoid over watering peace lilies. String of Pearls – A popular succulent featuring long beaded tendrils that can grow up to a metre long, making them perfect for a spot on a high shelf. Their bead-like foliage
stores water, which makes them more tolerant of drought. Allow your String of Pearls to dry out between watering, as root rot is a common problem if this plant is overwatered. String of Pearls will tolerate a bright light, so a sunny windowsill or shelf is a great spot. Callisia Bubbles – Callisia Bubbles (Callisia repens) is another great trailing houseplant. The Bubbles plant prefers a bright position, but not direct sunlight. Water regularly to keep the soil moist and trim to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Philodendron Birkin – Philodendron Birkin is becoming increasingly popular with its striking pin-striped foliage. The Birkin enjoys bright but indirect sunlight, a humid environment and moist soil. Regularly water, allowing the soil to only partly dry out between watering.

Rising Star Rangipai Hill Dobson Ko Ko Ko Ko No Ko
Tarawera te maunga Te Awaroa te awa Kaipara te moana Otakanini te pa Ngati Whatua Tuturu Rangipai Hill-Dobson
In 2018, William Lindesay had a call from fellow builder Helen James, asking if he could find a spot in the Matakana team for a friend who was keen to get into the industry. She was upfront that she didn't have experience but did have a good attitude. “When we interview people, I always say, ‘We can teach you almost anything but we can't teach attitude, work ethic or humour’” William says. It became evident quickly that Rangipai had buckets loads of these attributes though and always a smile on her face.
While Rangipai Hill-Dobson started her journey as an apprentice builder, she met a bunch of carpenters she now calls her brothers. Not only did they share their craft with her, but they also treated her as an equal. Their team raised money for different organisations, once participating in Shave for a Cure. These bonds created on site were made easy with having a site foreman, Rob Hoey who has developed a culture where they all look out for one another. Rangipai’s goal is to own her own home so
she joined the trade with the objective to learn the skills needed to build and renovate her own spaces. She enjoys how this career path is hands-on, not repetitive year after year and she can help create a beautiful space which grows from nothing. NAWIC shines a light on women's achievements across different construction trades. Building a platform where these women can make connections and empower each other. Rangipai attributes her success to the support she’s had from her site

Lindesay Construction believes in the development of a strong team environment where apprentices like Pai are made to feel included and valued throughout their learning. By providing leadership and a positive culture consisting of respect, encouragement, daily challenges and the opportunities to develop key skills for the trade, Pai has thrived and continues to develop into an exceptional young tradeswoman. Lindesay felt Pai needed to be recognised for her work and wanted to celebrate her progress, effort and skills by nominating her for the NAWIC Apprentice of Year and Rising Star Awards. “It is the first time a participant has won two awards in different categories and we couldn’t be prouder of her,” says William. “The last time I checked in on Pai with her site manager – he said ‘Look out, she’ll be running this place soon!’” www.lindesayconstruction.co.nz

Steps to Selling Selling a business successfully is, in many ways, no different to running a business successfully.
“Once a potential buyer is interested, there’s little that will be more attractive than seeing that the enterprise is well-run, and wellpositioned for its unique mix of opportunities, risks and obligations in the market,” says Jayson Hayde, Bayleys Real Estate’s National Director of Business Sales. “There is no doubt that running a business successfully and professionally very much assists in its preparation for sale and achieving the optimum outcome in selling that business,” he says. Though every business is different, experience points to universal ingredients that enable owners to operate (and ultimately sell) a successful and profitable business. The right people
Having a high-performing and stable team with a positive workplace culture is an advantage for any business, and a strong selling point. So too, is ensuring that the management team is competent – regardless of ownership. The impression of a wellmanaged team will be reinforced if you’re able to show clear, well thought-out and

up-to-date structural charts, HR manuals and employment contracts. Knowing your market
Being able to show that you understand your client base, have excellent relationships and where appropriate supply agreements are in place, will go a long way towards demonstrating that your business is well-run. You need to be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of your product offering, distribution channels, competitive advantage, margins and areas of risk and upside, and a thorough knowledge of your competitors. Having an up-to-date SWOT analysis on your business will demonstrate a disciplined approach. A new owner may see an alternative path for the business, but a clear existing market positioning and business strategy will give them confidence around the starting point. A record of success
A documented record of successful financial performance will be an irresistible asset for your enterprise. At a more basic level, completed and audited accounts for previous
years; regular cash flow reports which show where income is coming from and where it’s going; and a record of effective management of debtors. You should have budgets in place for the current year, with year-to-date progress measured through monthly accounts and year-end forecasts updated periodically. Ideally, your paperwork should be able to show a consistent pattern of profitable year-on-year revenue growth, and strong control of costs, which ideally decrease as a percentage of revenue as the business grows. Longer-term plans will outline how profitable growth will be achieved over the coming three to five years. Plans, processes and compliance
The owner of a well-run business will ensure there are clear systems for operational procedures and that these are documented in an operations manual. Annual repairs and maintenance should be detailed along with capital expenditure plans. A long-term strategic plan will show the business knows where it is heading.
Meanwhile, all licence agreements, leases (plant and buildings), insurances and other contracts need to be current and appropriate, while a detailed workplace health and safety policy will demonstrate that the business is meeting its legal obligations. Documentation of this type will offer valuable assurance that planning is well in hand from both an operational and strategic perspective, and compliance requirements are being met – which will help head off doubts or questions from potential buyers. “In a perfect world all of the above – and more – will be in place, both while you operate your business and also when the
time comes to sell,” says Jayson. “The more boxes you can tick in this checklist, the more saleable your business will be.” In reality, of course, that is quite often not the case, which doesn’t mean the business still can’t be readied for sale and a good outcome achieved. A knowledgeable business broker will be able to advise and assist with this. “Quite often prospective buyers are attracted by improvements that could be made and the potential for growth when assessing a business,” he says. “The bottom line is that planning for the eventual sale of your business should ideally begin well in advance of the sale date, and in many ways
from the day you first acquire or start it,” “A company with a history of being well-run will be more saleable and reward the owner for their years of hard work and investment.” Jayson Hayde is the National Director responsible for Bayleys Business Sales, and with over 25 year of experience across successful business ownership, development, agency and leadership, is uniquely positioned to offer you sound commercial advice when buying or selling a business. 027 443 9475 jayson.hayde@bayleys.co.nz

Better Work Stories
SWIM MANGAWHAI ONE YEAR IN BUSINESS “Our business, like many others, experienced lots of challenges over the past year. What got us through was our resilience, commitment to providing this service and the support of our incredible community,” says owner Emma Kirner. Swim Mangawhai is based on three core values: supporting local, manaakitanga and whakawhanaungatanga. “We embed these values in our everyday operations by recruiting skilled, passionate and caring people to work with us. Surrounding ourselves with people who believe and breathe our values makes Swim Mangawhai what it is.” In reality, owning a business doesn’t mean more family time, for now it means the opposite and we are incredibly grateful for the support our wee whanau have around us. Since starting Swim Mangawhai we have seen a lot of our community being stretched and challenged in various ways. By embracing manaakitanga, we’re able to lend a hand and support those who support us. We wouldn’t have it any other way. www.swimmangawhai.co.nz

WARKWORTH BUTCHERY SEVEN YEARS IN BUSINESS After 20 years as a butcher and seven owning the Warkworth Butchery, Rob Lees and his team have become an integral part of the local community. For them customer service is their main focus, “and appreciation of the effort our customers have made to shop with us is of the utmost importance to me!” says Rob. “Consistency is also important as people keep coming back for what they like. It is important to be able to back that up - once they have faith in you they will try other products.” “Smallgoods was at the forefront of my business early on. We needed to create an identity with that and we have grown so much with our range and also knowledge. I believe in baby steps and gradual growth - being genuine and immersing yourself in the community." Rob says that his team have been a key asset and they have been lucky to have a low staff turnover. “In turn we all have great rapport with our customers, who from the start, have been willing to support this 100 plus year-old butchery but they must like what they take home and how we do it!” www.warkworthbutchery.co.nz
KATYA MAKER BOUTIQUE - 10 YEARS IN BUSINESS Katya Maker Boutique for the style-conscious woman, has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary since their unveiling. Managing Director, Katya Maker shares some tips on a decade of success. Be flexible/keep learning - you need to invest in emerging trends, technologies and shifts in the industry. Keep your eyes and ears open to new ways of bringing value to your customers. It’s scary, but if you see potential in something new, you have to put yourself out there and try it. Become excellent in your craft - become a total nerd with your business. It’s not enough to know your product, you need to
know your value proposition, your competitors, their products and everything in between. Learn everything you can from the successes and failures of the leaders in your industry. Your superior knowledge of the product or solution you offer (with your ability to communicate it) will make you the obvious choice for a portion of your target market. Stay consistent - we’ve always put a focus on creating a particular type of experience in store for our customers. But what good is that if it only happens once out of every five visits? Know why your customer chooses to buy from you, instead of their other options and consistently deliver on that promise.

SOUTHERN PAPRIKA LIMITED TWENTY THREE YEARS IN BUSINESS Southern Paprika Limited (SPL) is a 27 hectare glasshouse operation based in Warkworth employing 150 staff. “The SPL business of glasshouse food production has been going for twenty two years but we started the journey many years before that, growing crops in the ground for the local market,” say owners Hamish and Robyn Alexander. “Business decisions were made with the knowledge of what we knew and we trusted our instincts. The financial risks we took were significant but we followed our passion for growing and really felt we could pull it off.”

Mahurangi College - Notice of Pre-enrolment and Ballot Procedures 2022 The Board Of Trustees invites applications from parents who wish to enroll their sons and daughters for Mahurangi College in 2022. Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme which includes a precise description of the home zone, details of which are available on the school website - mahurangi.school.nz or at the school office. The deadline for all in-zone and out-of-zone applications is Friday, 13 Aug 2021. The board has determined that up to 5 places are likely to be available in each year level group (Year 7 – 13) for out-of-zone students next year. This number is an estimate only. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot is required it will be held on Monday, 23 August 2021. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

Ready, Willing and Able What does the word ‘disability’ bring to mind? Maybe you picture someone in a wheelchair or a person who is vision impaired using a stick? Disability is usually associated with being ‘less able’, because it suggests you are unable to do what others can. But there is another side that is rarely understood – that disabled people are as diverse as people who are not disabled. Many have great qualities and talents that aren’t recognised because of our unconscious bias when we see someone who is different to ourselves. At AIM (Adults in Motion) Inc. they work alongside adults who have learning and physical disabilities. Using a strengths-based model and focussing on what people can do they believe that everyone has a right to fully participate in their community and everyone has something to contribute. Whether it be
in a paid job, part-time role, volunteering, or being a good neighbour. “We look at each person’s abilities, potential, and personal goals - then mentor them to build the skill-set needed to find a suitable role,” says manager Sarah Allan. “For social integration to work, we need communities that support inclusion, and businesses that welcome disabled people.” Currently, AIM is supporting an enthusiastic young person undergoing training to work in a local pet shop. A support person joined Jessica for her initial training, and now she is becoming more independent. Jessica is thrilled to be in a regular work setting, with colleagues and customers that value her work. “The impact this has on Jessica is immeasurable, not to mention the impact it has on others,” Sarah says.
Jessica enjoying her role at Pets North
Providing accommodations for staff with disabilities has many proven benefits for businesses. Diversity improves the organisational culture and climate of the workplace; disabled people are reliable employees with an overall higher job retention rate; plus, customers often commend businesses for employing disabled people because it demonstrates an ethos of valuing individual employees, as well as the inherent social benefits of creating and sustaining an inclusive workplace. Local businesses who wish to offer trial placements for suitable applicants (just an hour or two a week) can email the AIM manager. adultsinmotion@gmail.com www.adultsinmotionnz.com

Business and Employment Law Changes The last 12 months has seen significant upheaval of laws affecting businesses in New Zealand.
It’s important for businesses to understand their new rights and obligations, and to understand the new entitlements for employees.
employers should ensure their employment agreements and Staff Handbook have been updated to reflect the changes.
Some of the important changes are outlined below:
Until recently, pregnant employees were not entitled to bereavement leave if they suffered a miscarriage or still birth. The Employment Relations Act 2000 has now been amended so an employee is entitled to take up to three days paid bereavement leave if they or their partner experience a miscarriage or stillbirth. People planning to have a baby through surrogacy or adopting are also eligible. Again, all employment documentation should be updated to reflect this change.
• New Privacy Act
The new Privacy Act 2020 came into force in New Zealand on 1 December 2020. The privacy changes affect all employers, and any organisation that gathers customers’ details for any reason: e.g., for a newsletter database, payment purposes, repeat bookings, or loyalty programs. Terms of Trade and other customer contracts should be reviewed and updated to reflect the new law. Particular changes for employers are that HR material (e.g., notes from performance appraisals) may have to be disclosed to employees; employers must appoint a Privacy Officer; and mandatory notification is now a requirement. All
• Bereavement Leave Extended for Employees
• Sick Leave Entitlement Increased
The Holidays (Increasing Sick Leave) Amendment Bill passed its third reading on 19 May 2021. The new law will provide employees with an increased entitlement to 10 days paid sick leave per year. The maximum number of sick leave days an
employee is entitled to in any year will remain the same. This means employees will only be able to carry over 10 sick leave days (instead of 15) to a maximum of 20 days in any given year. The changes are expected to come into force in approximately two months time. • M andatory Accreditation for Employers of Migrant Workers
From 1 November 2021, all employers who hire migrant workers on the new Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) must be accredited employers. This requirement will replace the previous scheme where accreditation was not mandatory. To become accredited, an employer must (among other things) ensure that all employment operational practices are robust and all employment agreements and Staff Handbooks are up to date. For further information about any of the above law changes, contact Davenports Law’s business or employment team. www.davenportslaw.co.nz | 09 883 4400

Co-Working Space Comes to Wellsford Corinne Smith and Mark Macdonald of Altitude Advisors & Accountants Ltd, along with their social media expert Shannen Frear and new administration manager Hauraki Beazley-Keane have officially moved to Wellsford, and are opening up their office space as a shared work-hub. “'Altitude Co-Working’ is for anyone who is looking to work in a different environment - from business owners, to those who work from home or even students,” says Corinne. Shared workspaces have become increasingly popular in the last few years, as they are not only a more financially viable option for businesses but they also offer staff a place to connect with others and share ideas in a professional environment. With more people working from home, but perhaps struggling with limited internet access or household distractions, co-working spaces are a great option. With different rates for casual and permanent desks, a meeting room for hire and excellent Wi-Fi, Altitude Co-Working has something for everyone, including complementary unlimited tea and coffee. Altitude Co-Working is located at 131 Rodney Street, Wellsford, so pop in to say hi or to check out their new space! Please visit www.altitudeadvisors.nz/coworking for more information.

besoul – a Canvas to Create a Life’s Masterpiece In my 25 plus years working in the funeral industry, I have observed the growing need for people to remember their loved ones in the way that they want to in a way that reflects the life of the person. When I was fortunate enough to design a modern, purpose-built site for besoul Funerals, the ability to have a space that could be tailored to any event was front of mind.
The Magnolia Room, where memorial events are held, can comfortably hold 150 people and is fitted with large screens and a sound system. Livestream video is available for services so those who are unable to attend can still take part. A kitchen and catering options are also available so you don’t need to move off-site and can enjoy refreshments with family and friends following the service.
Now surrounded by farmland on Gumfield Drive in Warkworth we have a custom-built facility to cater to funeral events - or any event of varying natures. It’s a modern, well-equipped space that acts as a sort of canvas.
The building was designed and built by local talent BK Designs and McMahon Builders. Of the design, Haden and Bernie Kose say they were daunted by the unique project at first. “Thankfully Dean has a wealth of experience in the industry and with his existing knowledge we were able to create a design brief covering all necessary spaces, forms and functions of the proposed building,” says Haden.
Having a blank slate to make your own could seem quite daunting to begin with but our besoul team will work alongside you to learn about what mattered most to the person you are celebrating. Then some special ideas start to transpire. We don’t want people to feel that they have to ‘tiptoe’ in as is commonly felt in funeral homes – we also have inviting spaces for viewing and spending time with your loved one and your family and friends, sharing stories, even sharing a drink if that’s how you want to remember them.
“Our end goal was to create a building that is warm and welcoming, while at the same time making it efficient and accessible. Cedar cladding was chosen for the front reception area to give a sense of warmth to the exterior. It was also used under the covered veranda of the Magnolia Room helping to tie the building together, while also creating a warm and welcoming covered outdoor area. The Magnolia Room
is tall and long, with large and high windows to allow ample natural light in. It is a flexible space, not constrained by fixed pews, as in a chapel, or sofas and chairs in a stateroom. The warm colour palette that Dean and his team have selected in this area are also key to creating this environment.” Jean, who recently lost her husband after 60 years of marriage, appreciated the work that had been done to make the besoul space a welcoming one. “My husband passed away in February. From the moment he left this world, Dean looked after him with care and dignity. My family felt confident in Dean taking care of the service to celebrate Ken’s life. A bonus for us was the building was not gloomy – but spacious, bright, and airy. Ken was not a gloomy person; he had a bright personality.” We want the community to feel a sense of ownership when they come here, and it is available to any community group or individuals when not being used for funerals. Brewed on the Go Epic Coffee Specialty coffee, carefully roasted in microbatches right here in Waipu and loaded into an adventure proof drip filter for you to enjoy damn good coffee on the go.
Created by a father and daughter duo who believe that your epic adventures deserve to be fuelled by top-notch coffee. Epic Coffee was an idea born from their shared love of the outdoors, adventures and of course, coffee. As avid adventurers and extreme sports enthusiasts, they wanted to create an adventure proof on-the-go coffee option that tasted just as good as a visit to the local roasters. More than a simple cup of coffee they envisioned a product that would inspire others to embark on their own journeys, see the beauty in nature and become part of a community that helps preserve the outdoors. The drip filters are fully sealed and will withstand any adventure. Brewed in just five easy steps. Just open your adventure proof pouch, rip open your epic drip filter, fit it into your favourite mug, fill with hot water and allow it to drain through three to four times. Finally take it home and dispose of it responsibly. While fuelling kiwi adventures, Epic Coffee are busy doing some good behind the scenes too. They sponsor Surf Life Saving Waipu Cove, Surf Life Saving Piha and donate proceeds from every purchase to reforestation projects with One Tree Planted. Whether you’re heading on your first camping trip, or embarking on an extended passage, this is your favourite new essential. Organic Goodness In case you have missed the news, Pinenut Bakery is the place to go for all artisan bread lovers across Bream Bay.
Pinenut Bakery's roots originate in the long and deeply ingrained Polish tradition of making bread. After all, it is Poland where ‘poolish’, one of the most classic fermentation processes widely used these days in preparing classic baguettes, was invented in the early 19th century. Along with ‘poolish’, sourdough is another all-time favourite choice for most Poles. In Poland bread is not only a part of almost every meal but also plays a major role in celebrating special moments, festive and religious rituals. After moving to New Zealand, it was no-brainer for the owners of the bakery to start sharing their love of sourdough with Kiwis. The perfect bread is all about senses: you can hear it crackling once taken out from the oven, its glorious smell spreads across the whole house, soft and chewy dough hidden
beneath the crunchy crust can satisfy the pickiest taste and even simply looking at it immediately makes you ravenous. But let’s not be fooled – making real sourdough has only a little to do with baking -it is science! Pinenut Bakery’s commitment to use only organic flour comes from the belief that natural ingredients enhance natural fermentation and result in the most delicious, protein and antioxidant rich and healthy bread. Traditional grain fermentation process enables lactic acid or ‘good’ bacteria to grow which along with the ‘wild yeast’, naturally present in flour, makes the dough rise. This precious colony of millions of hardworking bacteria allows for smooth digestion, playing a vital role in everyday diet. More importantly, this natural fermentation increases absorption of
many vitamins and minerals such as zinc, magnesium and potassium which gives you yet another excuse to eat your sourdough bread without feeling guilty. Apart from the finest ingredients, every bread deserves a bit of love, too. That is why at Pinenut Bakery each loaf is hand crafted and individually scored. During the two-day process of producing a loaf of sourdough, they do not compromise on quality, sticking to every single stage of the process and never hurrying the bread. Find out more about Ruakaka based Pinenut Bakery by visiting their website or email Marta to grab your share of organic goodness. You can also follow them on Facebook to get the latest updates on Pinenut Bakery’s activities. www.pinenutbakery.co.nz marta@pinenutbakery.co.nz

Seasonal Gardening Calendar Gardens are beautiful places that ebb and flow with the seasons. Places that nourish your soul and your body. Your garden will reward you for the effort you put in with fresh, healthy and great tasting produce. Right now, in early winter you may notice the energy in your garden retreating from the heady highs of summer and early autumn. This is a perfect time to set up your early spring crops, to clean up and build fertility. Your garden may have that extra warm sunny spot that will grow winter vegetables like a star. It may also be a bit wet and shady and happy to take a rest. If you are planting in winter take time to observe and choose the best areas to plant in. This will help you get great results.
HARVEST •W inter greens like kale, perpetual spinach, silverbeet •B rassicas - broccoli, cauliflower, broccoflower • C elery • M esclun & lettuce • R ocket •H erbs like coriander, parsley, spring onions •C itrus fruits – lemons, limes, mandarins, oranges, grapefruits
PLANT • Fennel
• Parsley
• Celery
• Beetroot
• Brassicas
• Garlic
• Lettuce
• Fruit trees
Already in our winter garden, which is in a tunnel house, are broccoli, beetroot, fennel, cabbage, broccoflower, kale, spinach, lettuce and parsley. There are still capsicums with new green fruit coming on. The first of the broccoli is ready to pick and put on the table. We have mesclun, spring onions and coriander growing in planter boxes in a smaller hothouse. It’s next to our house so we can pick straight onto the table. Growing outside are carrots and self seeded parsnips, plus a row of perpetual spinach. The outdoor garden is quiet right now and will be next month too. For your winter garden, what you harvest depends on your site, how good the drainage and sunlight is. If you have raised beds in a sunny location they will be shining right now.
Garlic is ideally suited to planting from May to July and is traditionally planted on the shortest day. So now is the time to get your garlic in if you haven’t already. Apart from garlic there is not much in the pipeline to plant out this month. Probably a low point of the year for many of us. With recent rains our clay soils will be fairly waterlogged. We don’t get much frost or real cold weather, but a waterlogged soil can present similar challenges to your winter garden. Soil temperature is what matters. A raised bed, in a sunny place, is the perfect to plant winter greens.

You can sow seeds anytime, but a good time to sow seeds in July is just before the next full moon on 24th July. As a rule of thumb, the seeds you are sowing now, will be ready to plant out in your garden in 6 to 8 weeks time. Think about sowing seeds that you will be planting out in late August onwards. By then, in our area, we are usually starting to get a mix of sunny early spring conditions laced with spells of cold wet winter weather. To sow seeds at this time of year you will need to be sowing your seeds indoors or in a glass house. There is not much scope to direct sow into your garden.
• Beetroot • Peas and snow peas • Broad Beans
TO DO •C lean up beds from autumn •L ime and apply compost to beds • Prune fruit trees
July is a quiet time in the vegetable garden. If you have trees to plant now is a good time to think about that. It is also a good time to walk around and observe what is happening on the land. Are any big trees too close and shading out your valuable vegetable patch? When you dig into your garden is it waterlogged? If it is, maybe put it in a raised bed or dig a drain. You can also fertilise fruit trees, turn compost and lime beds not in use. A clean up is also great to remove debris left from the summer/autumn harvest. Garden structures like bean trellises can be cleaned or removed for winter. Dormant fruit trees can be pruned. Feijoas can also be pruned now to keep them vigorous and let light in, so can olive trees if you have them.

Award Winning Liveable Home Photos Sam Hartnett
Built on a peninsula overlooking Omaha, the ocean and Hauturu Island, Takatu Ridge House embraces expansive views and the sun. The landscape, productive gardens and orchard influenced the house plan, right down to bringing the landscaping into the centre of the house with an internal courtyard and positioning of rooms. All rooms open to the outdoors and garden, and take advantage of the indoor-outdoor connections. The home built by Shaun Steffens, earned the now local architect Ross Brown a win at the 2020 Auckland Architects Awards.
It comprises two separate living areas, a centrally located kitchen closely related to the vegetable garden and outdoor-eating area, a home-office and a robust mud-room as an alternative entry point, in addition to all the normal requirements for a three bedroom house. A garage studio also provides overflow sleeping. The house opens onto its central courtyard, north facing deck and pergola. The two-storey section of the house was sited to the west of the courtyard, permitting a sloping-roof across the whole building, which directs easterly weather up
and over the house; minimal openings to the south protect from cold south-westerly winds. Eaves and timber screens on upper windows give shade in summer while letting in winter sun. In summer, the large north facing windows are screened by upper timber slats with eaves and a timber pergola to provide further shade. Inside, high studs help cool the house in summer and in winter a concrete entrance slab beside full height north-facing glazing, creates a ‘heat sink’. In winter, ambient heat is provided by gas fired, water-filled radiators

in all rooms. As back-up a Pyroclassic woodburner heats the living areas and a wetback heats hot water with an in-situ concrete wall behind, which emits stored heat. All rooms are cross ventilated with opening sashes and sliding doors. The upstairs living (and office) enjoys views to Mt Tamahunga to the north and vineyards to the west, taking maximum advantage of the late-afternoon sun. Steel-framed and well-insulated timber framed walls give the house a robustness that accommodates extensive glazing to the north and east. Plantation woods and sustainable materials are used throughout: Blackbutt floors, wool carpets and plywood ceilings are also used. External cladding is Ashen-Dura chosen for its minimal treatment and is painted white to deflect summer sun. Deck timber is Grapa and the pergola framing is a combination of Purple Heart and Russian Larch. The house feels at home in the rural landscape with its shed roof forms (echoing local rural building shapes), grey corrugated iron roof and wall cladding in concert with crisp white-painted vertical weatherboarding. The owners who inhabit the house full-time now, say they enjoy the comfortable living and energy efficiency. ross@rosso.co.nz 021 995 544 Photos: www.samhartnett.com

A Tropical Colour Storm Marie-Dominique Lennan was born on the
Ivory Coast of West Africa. It is, therefore, no
surprise that this hot and sunny environment,
with its flora and fauna, and beautiful colours,
had a special influence on Marie-Dominique's personality and outlook on life. From an
early age, she was inspired by the local
fabrics which often reflected the energy of
the colourful markets, the beaches, palms, coconut trees, hibiscus and all tropical vibrant species.
After relocating to New Zealand via Paris, a massive adventure in itself, she then frequently travelled to the Pacific Islands and Bali - again drawn to the colours of a tropical landscape, the relaxed lifestyle and its people. After bringing up two boys in Leigh, the closest she could come to a stunning setting in New Zealand, she started painting as a way to bring the memories of the tropics into her home.

With her frequent trips to Tahiti, Fiji and Bali over the last 30 years, she has built up a collection of photographic imagery to draw from, capturing the exotic nature of the islands, in her abstract illustration of heliconia, palms, hibiscus and monstera. Working as a real estate agent dedicated to the Leigh and Matakana coastal region, she has often found inspiration in her vendors' beautiful sub-tropical gardens. By immersing yourself into her paintings, you can find the landscape that the artist herself escapes to when creating it - a beautiful, tropical destination with joy and play never far away. Marie-Dominique’s paintings are displayed at the Matakana Art Gallery and a couple of her artworks will be exclusively exhibited at the MAGS Art Show (Mount Albert Grammar School exhibition) from the 15-18 August 2021. Treasure Hunting at the Funny Barn The Funny Barn began its life as a shearing shed, but owner Robyn Cunliffe saw its potential and set out to breathe new life into this rustic beauty. A passion project, the barn has been lovingly transformed into a store to house Robyn’s Retro and Vintage collections. Robyn has a real eye for all things retro and vintage, with a penchant for items with integrity, and pieces that tell authentic stories for years to come. With a bit of agricultural ingenuity pieces are tenderly repurposed ready for their next life. Full of an eclectic mix of furniture and homewares, both preloved and new, there are a wide range of products on offer. The barn is filled with collectables, pottery,
glassware, metal work, pots, plants and more. The Funny Barn also seeks to support others in the Valley community by featuring work by local ceramicists and makers.

YES Programme Fifteen Northland teenagers have gained hands-on experience in what it takes to be part of New Zealand’s emergency services, through the Youth in Emergency Services (YES) programme, run in Mangawhai during May.
A national programme, YES is designed to strengthen the connection between young people and their communities. It’s funded by the Ministry of Youth Development and is open to young people aged between 16 and 19 who live around the chosen location and have been nominated by someone in their community. YES has been strongly supported by emergency services and agencies in Northland since it was first offered in the region in 2014, and rotates around the three districts. The Mangawhai programme is the eighth to have been run in Northland, with the Far North now next in line for 2022. The programme involves a series of orientation days led by individual agencies, leading up to a final combined services exercise that calls on all the skills the participants have learned – triage and first aid, land and water-
based rescue, firefighting, decisionmaking, communication and teamwork.

Let’s Talk About Sex Talking with teens about sex and sexuality has always been considered a difficult topic for many parents, but it doesn’t have to be.
Part of the problem lies in society still feeling discomfort and a sense of taboo around ideas to do with sex and pleasure. Increasingly, we can have conversations around avoiding unwanted pregnancies, STIs and the concept of consent, but we ignore the central point that good sex is, ideally, mutually pleasurable. We need to be able to break down the old shame around talking about pleasure in order to help our youth understand how to develop healthy relationships and build healthy,

respectful sexual practices. Letting our youth know sex should be both mutually respectful and pleasurable is essential to their development. That requires lots of little gentle conversations. If we don’t talk with our children, porn and pop culture will fill the void of information and many of the tropes and ideas that they teach our young people are shown to be sexist, violent and damaging. A large amount of mainstream porn, for example, makes aggression and pain sexy. Our youth can internalise and live out these values that are inculcated in them. We have to break down some unhealthy cultural norms and show our youth healthier ideas and practices. Ideally, we start this conversation young, in age-appropriate ways. We can talk about body parts, using the correct language (not baby talk and euphemisms), consent (if a child doesn’t want to hug someone, don’t force them), and learning how to vocalise boundaries are brilliant starting points.
So, how to broach a conversation with your child about these topics? Start by identifying the time and place. If a song comes on the stereo when you’re driving them somewhere and you hear sexual lyrical content, light-heartedly ask them about it. What does that mean to you? What does this word mean? Do you think that would feel good for someone else? Many parents are oblivious to the songs that glorify spitting on partners or choking them. Simple questions can help our young people reflect, develop empathy and have critical filters.
internet will. Let’s get over our own sense of embarrassment and help our children feel unashamed of their own bodies and burgeoning sexuality so they can have safe and enjoyable sexual experiences as they move throughout life. Helpful resources can be found at www.thelightproject.co.nz or www.familyplanning.org.nz/advice.
Kids might be awkward at first, but if you’re open to listening without judgement, it opens the door to future conversations where you can offer a counter-narrative to what might not always be healthy role modelling. Our youth should be able to come to us with their very natural sexual curiosity, ask us questions and if we don’t know the answer, we can help find them; even together.

A FEARON HAY PIECE OF ART - 14 RITA WAY, OMAHA
Once upon a time Omaha was all about rabbits and farms. The farms are nearly all gone and well the rabbits are not giving up their territory, and who would really blame them. Now it’s just the beautiful beach in this neck of the woods, and mostly those very astute, lucky and fortunate people with foresight who now live, work and play here. Don’t be one of those who berate themselves with in hindsight that I would have, could have, should have invested here but for?... What are you waiting for?
Defined by its simplicity and style, for those of you that can appreciate the timeless value of a Fearon Hay designed Omaha beach house collaborated with Jack and Trelise Cooper this opportunity rarely comes your way.
Do it for yourself, your family and future generations. Don’t miss out. Features: 3 bedrooms, open plan living, family bathroom with sunken tiled bath/powder room. Outdoor hot ‘n cold shower, private entertainers courtyard, pool, high stud boat storage, separate concrete bunker beach toy storage, off street parking.
Open Home – Saturdays/Sundays 1.00pm to 1.45pm View online at www.precision.net.nz - ID #511497 To be sold by Auction (unless sold prior) on site 3.30pm Sunday 11th July 2021
